The late Pat Carroll may have been best-known to a generation as the sea witch Ursula in Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID, but her long career includes recurring roles on The Danny Thomas Show and The Red Skelton Hour up through many voice roles in Galaxy High School, Pound Puppies and even the Kingdom Hearts game series. In 2001, we got her on the phone for SONGCATCHER, in which she plays a cantankerous grandmother.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: An EXTENDED VERSION of the show exclusively for online!

A criminal gets a plan for the perfect heist from his cellmate and has to find a patsy to carry it out... and suddenly finds seven candidates, with hardly a brain between them. Before they masterminded the biggest chapters of the Marvel Universe, Joe & Anthony Russo [THE AVENGERS: ENDGAME] got their first big attention in 2002 with WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD featuring some big-time stars, and in this rare archive interview, they discuss story structure, Catholicism, polka music, Cleveland and what, exactly, are a Bellini and a Mullinski.

2021 marked the 50th anniversary of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF's cinematic jump from Broadway to movie theaters, and its story is captured in the not-confusingly-titled documentary FIDDLER'S JOURNEY TO THE BIG SCREEN, just out on blu-ray! Our guest, writer/director Daniel Raim (HAROLD AND LILLIAN: A HOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY) takes us through its filmic re-envisioning via rare behind-the-scenes footage, original storyboards and interviews with FIDDLER's director Norman Jewison, star Topol, composer John Williams and many more.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Music to our eyes!

The critical path of filmmaking includes essential elements from acting and directing to set design, costumes, sound and editing. The final major step in crafting a movie is its soundtrack, and film music is as wildly-varied as the many stories and subjects. This week, we delve into the sound of movies, with music producer and award-winning film composer Roman Molino Dunn (a.k.a Electropoint) whose work includes commercials, shorts and recent features such as AI LOVE YOU and SNAKEHEAD. Another talking point: his company invented the much-praised and controversial software Auto-Tune!

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Stepping way back. (And with more content than the broadcast version!)

LICORICE PIZZA gives us sweetly-nostalgic impressions of a bygone time as it follows two young people growing up and navigating the bumpy path of first love in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. The latest from Paul Thomas Anderson (BOOGIE NIGHTS) finally makes its blu-ray/home video debut and it is the feature acting debut from our guest, musician and lead ensemble actor Alana Haim (HAIM).

In 1965, filmmaker Bruce Brown captured a worldwide expedition in search of the perfect wave in THE ENDLESS SUMMER (followed by a sequel in 1994). Decades later, his son Dana Brown grabbed a camera, collared the world's best surfers and continued the adventure with his film STEP INTO LIQUID. We talked with Dana Brown in 2004 about his feature and the passion that may make you want to grab a board!

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews including THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER; GIRL IN THE PICTURE [Netflix]; MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS; BOTH SIDES OF THE BLADE; PERSUASION [Netflix]; DON'T MAKE ME GO [Amazon Prime]; GABBY GIFFORDS WON'T BACK DOWN; SHE WILL [also VOD]; EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE [4K][Lionsgate Home Video]; THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT [Lionsgate Home Video]; DUAL [Image Entertainment]; MIAMI VICE [MVD Rewind] and DESPERATE HOURS [MVD Rewind].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: New to Blu-ray and not-so-new-- from the archive!

A radio journalist, caring for his sister's young son, decides to turn his current project-- interviewing kids across the U.S. for their views on life-- into a get-to-know-you road trip to better connect with the boy. Writer/director Mike Mills (BEGINNERS) tells how he brought yet another unassuming, deeply-personal story to the screen-- this time in black-and-white-- and the celebrated performance by child actor Woody Norman in C'MON C'MON. [Blu-ray debut]

After being kicked out of his rock band and facing a mountain of debt, slacker guitarist Dewey Finn becomes a substitute teacher of an uptight elementary private school, only to try and turn his class into a rock band. Before Broadway came calling, director Richard Linklater gave the world SCHOOL OF ROCK, and in 2004, we talked with the electrically-charged Jack Black!

In 2004, writer/director Kevin Smith (CLERKS, CHASING AMY) deviated from his familiar tone and made JERSEY GIRL, about a man who, following the death of his wife and damaging his career, must look after his precocious daughter while rebuilding his life. We sat down with Smith to chat about his new movie (a little bit), but really, we had so much more on our minds....

An aging jockey preparing to ride in his final championship race when he's visited by a rookie rider claiming to be his son. JOCKEY is the movie-- a meditative, poignant indie feature debut from documentary filmmaker Clint Bentley (whose father was a jockey) who joins us as the film makes its debut on home video.

Finding himself down and out in Los Angeles, a washed-up porn star slinks back to his small Texas hometown and his estranged wife and mother-in-law. But, when he meets a young woman at a doughnut shop, he falls back into his destructive habits. From Sean Baker (TANGERINE) comes RED ROCKET, and we chat with its lead actor Simon Rex as the film makes its debut on blu-ray. Wanna know what the title refers to?

An hommage to journalism and French cinema and culture, THE FRENCH DISPATCH is a three-story anthology that has been called "the most Wes Anderson movie yet." THIS WEEK'S SHOW: They're back... from the archive!

In 2018, actor Paul Dano, currently tearing up screens as the Riddler in THE BATMAN, made his feature directorial debut with WILDLIFE based on Richard Ford's novel whic focuses on a teenage boy who witnesses his parents' relationship disintegrate. We sat with Dano who told us how he and partner Zoe Kazan pulled external imagery from internal text.

She moved to San Francisco in 1976: a young secretary from Cleveland, as innocent as the drug-and-disco-fueled city was decadent. Now, a middle-aged Mary Ann Singleton returns to the City by the Bay to reunite with the eccentric friends she left behind-- including the mysterious Mrs. Madrigal, who still has secrets yet to share. We pop back to 2019 to talk TALES OF THE CITY, the fourth series in Armistead Maupin's rainbow-flavored stories with Critic's Choice Award winning actor Murray Bartlett and actor Charlie Barnett.

A woman's lifelong struggle with her faith throws her spiritual community off-kilter, calling into question belief, love and trust-- in people as well as God. HIGHER GROUND is the 2011 directorial debut film from its lead actor Vera Farmiga, recently seen in the Sopranos prequel series THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK, and our guest for this archive interview.

FALLING FOR FIGARO introduces us to an American fund manager in London who ditches her job (and boyfriend) to pursue her lifelong passion of being an opera singer in the Scottish Highlands. Can you tell it's a romantic comedy? Actor Danielle Macdonald, now on the HBO Max series THE TOURIST zooms in to talk about it!

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: (Never) too many notes!

There was a time when going to the movies was an Event. It was the time of the roadshow, where film musicals were presented like Broadway openings, with entr-actes, intermissions and audiences dressed up for a night on the town. But times changed, and in the late 1960s, the cultural revolution quickly put an end to singing, dancing, happy movie musicals. Our sole guest this week is film historian Matthew Kennedy, who documented the whole phenomenon in his book ROADSHOW: THE FALL OF FILM MUSICALS IN THE 1960s.

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including AFTER YANG [Showtime]; FRESH [Hulu]; HUDA'S SALON; TURNING RED; THE ADAM PROJECT; COMPARTMENT NO. 6; GOLD; THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS [4K][Warner Home Entertainment]; BELFAST [Universal Home Entertainment]; JOHN AND THE HOLE [IFC Films]; A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN [Sony Pictures Home Entertainment]; COMING 2 AMERICA [Paramount Home Video]; AMERICAN UNDERDOG [Lionsgate Home Video]; ADVENTURE TIME: DISTANT LANDS [Warner Home Entertainment]; VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; ALIAS NICK BEAL [Kino Lorber Studio Classics] and THE WEB [Kino Lorber Studio Classics].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: All about the laughs!

Thanks to two current movies (BEING THE RICARDOS and LUCY AND DESI), America loves Lucy all over again! We can't resist joining the conversation, so, to that end, we pop back a few years to the 2011 book LUCILLE BALL FAQ: EVERYTHING LEFT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICA'S FAVORITE REDHEAD and our chat with its authors, Barry Monush & James Sheridan. They discuss her early career, being a natural blonde, the Orson Welles movie that never was, playing a bag lady in THE STONE PILLOW and of course, her much-debated (infamous?) turn in MAME.

In the 2000 comedy ME MYSELF & IRENE, a nice-guy state trooper tasked with retrieving a fugitive finds the mission complicated by the inopportune appearances of his maniacal alter-ego. He also confronts a little person limo driver with nunchucks and an attitude, played by Tony Cox (BAD SANTA). In this dip back into the archives, Cox talks about his martial arts training, "little person" roles in sci-fi/fantasy movies and working very carefully with star Jim Carrey.

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including THE BATMAN; LUCY AND DESI [Amazon Prime]; DEAR MR. BRODY; ETERNALS [4K][Disney Home Video]; THE KING'S MAN [Disney Home Video]; HOUSE OF GUCCI [Universal Home Entertainment]; THE 355 [Universal Home Entertainment]; SILENT NIGHT [RLJ Entertainment]; THE GREAT MOMENT [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; BROKEN LULLABY [Kino Lorber Studio Classics] and GOD'S GUN [Kino Lorber Studio Classics].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Disturbing and euphoric.

In the slow-burn horror drama A BANQUET, a mother has a lot on her plate when her teenage daughter suddenly exhibits bizarre behavior following a mysterious phenomenon: she insists her body is no longer her own and stops eating, but doesn't lose weight. It's the feature film debut from Ruth Paxton, who joins us via Zoom.

We buck the Winter doldrums by looking back at the history of surf culture! Director Stacy Peralta goes from skateboards (DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS) to the world of long boards and big waves with RIDING GIANTS, and we dip back to 2004 to hear him rhapsodize on the lifestyle, the passion and the pursuit of pure kinetic pleasure.

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including CYRANO; THE DESPERATE HOUR; NO EXIT [Hulu]; MILLER'S CROSSING [Criterion Collection Blu-ray]; THE GREEN MILE [4K][Warner Home Entertainment]; ESCAPE FROM L.A. [4K][Paramount Home Entertainment]; SHATTERED [Lionsgate Home Video]; FRANCE [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; MAN ON THE MOON [Kino Lorber Studio Classics] and 12 ANGRY MEN [Kino Lorber Studio Classics].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: A lot of fighting!

Kaylee, a Native American boxer embarks on the fight of her life when she goes undercover in a sex trafficking operation to seek answers and revenge against the men responsible for the disappearance of her sister. The film is CATCH THE FAIR ONE and we're joined by its co-writers who are also director Josef Kubota Wladyka and lead actor Kali Reis.

CHURCHILL portrays a beaten-down Winston Churchill in the pivotal 96 hours before D-Day as he struggles to implement the best strategies against fears of how history will remember him. With lead actor Brian Cox receiving accolades for his role on SUCCESSION, we dip back to our 2017 conversation where Cox shares numerous historical notes and at least one very wacky (and animated) source of inspiration for the character.

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including THE SLEEPER MUST AWAKEN: MAKING DUNE; KIMI [HBO Max]; BIGBUG [Netflix]; THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE; MARRY ME; PRESIDENT; THE LAST BUS; STRAWBERRY MANSION; ENCANTO; RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY [4K][Sony Pictures Home Entertainment]; LIAR'S MOON [MVD] and DANCING PIRATE [The Film Detective].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Feel the love... feel the pain!

On opposite sides of a twinned world (each with opposing gravities), a pair of young people seek to reconnect after 10 years of a forced separation when they were children. The film is UPSIDE DOWN, a science fiction romance, and we drop back to 2012 for our chat with lead actor Jim Sturges, who also talks about his turns in ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and CLOUD ATLAS.

It started as a TV show of insane, dangerous stunts and practical jokes gone all kinds of wrong. Then, it hit the big screen. Six years later, it got a sequel that upped the ante for wildly-irresponsible mayhem and gross-out gags courtesy of ringleader Johnny Knoxville and his band of maniacs. With the fourth escapade JACKASS FOREVER now in theaters, we fondly revisit our tender and touching 2006 conversation with Johnny Knoxville and director of all the movies, Jeff Tremaine.

Then, "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including MINIMATA; BLACKLIGHT; I WANT YOU BACK [Amazon Prime]; CATCH THE FAIR ONE; THE SLEEPING NEGRO; GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE [Sony Pictures Home Entertainment]; SPENCER [NEON]; KING RICHARD [Warner Home Entertainment]; CATWOMAN: HUNTED [4K][Warner Home Entertainment]; STARGIRL: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON [Warner Home Entertainment]; THE SPINE OF NIGHT [RLJ Entertainment] and LA DOLCE VITA [Paramount Home Entertainment].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Take a ride; take a trip!

Music is in the air via a host of documentaries vying for awards attention this year, with a decided emphasis on classic sounds. So, we cracked open our 25-years-old archive to hop aboard a (literal) music train! FESTIVAL EXPRESS (also the title) transported Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and a host of top bands on a once-in-a-lifetime tour across Canada in 1970 that was captured on film but unseen until 2004. That's when our guest Bob Smeaton (THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY) assembled widely-scattered footage into a sonic time capsule, complete with contemporary commentaries.

Then, EPIC "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including THE FALLOUT [HBO Max]; GAMESTOP: RISE OF THE PLAYERS; SUNDOWN; THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD; LITTLE GIRL [Music Box Films]; CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG [Paramount Home Entertainment]; WAYNE'S WORLD 30th Anniversary [Paramount Home Entertainment]; FORTRESS [Lionsgate Home Video]; RADIO ON [Fun City Editions]; MORVERN CALLAR [Fun City Editions]; THE PRODUCERS [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; CAREER OPPORTUNITIES [Kino Lorber Studio Classics] and THE CAPTURE [The Film Detective].

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Sexy talk!

In 2015, the late actor Gaspard Ulliel took on the role of one of fashion's most iconic designers, Yves Saint Laurent. We remember Ulliel in this archive interview for the 2015 biopic SAINT LAURENT, which focuses on the designer's peak years from 1967 to 1976. And, yes-- we did talk about all that nudity!

Then, we dip back to 2006 with HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH director John Cameron Mitchell on his follow-up, the sex drama SHORTBUS, which has gotten a new 15th anniversary edition 4K blu-ray. It focuses on a group of young New Yorkers whose lives intersect at an underground art/music club where they work out their emotions and sexual relationships.

Plus: "Screen Scene" movie reviews (theaters or VOD if not specified) including FLEE; RIFKIN'S FESTIVAL; WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT COSBY; LAST NIGHT IN SOHO [20th Century Home Video]; THE ADDAMS FAMILY 2 [Universal Home Entertainment]; BRIAN WILSON: LONG PROMISED ROAD [Screen Media]; THE LONG GOODBYE [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; THE SEDUCTION OF JOE TYNAN [Kino Lorber Studio Classics]; THE FOUR SEASONS [Kino Lorber Studio Classics] and GET CRAZY [Kino Lorber Studio Classics].

In 2004, he joined us on behalf of his book, WHO THE HELL'S IN IT: CONVERSATIONS WITH HOLLYWOOD'S LEGENDARY ACTORS, and shared anecdotes about these iconic stars, growing up with a different language, what came from John Wayne's garage and why "everything about a movie counts." THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Getting real.

Bay Area film scribe Ruthe Stein has been writing about movies and the people who make them for over 50 years. Now, she's put many of her encounters with the famous into SITTING WITH THE STARS: INTERVIEWS WITH 100 HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS, a book of... not interviews, but impressions of the stars outside of the interviews themselves. Ruthe sits down with US to share her many movie memories.

After his breakthrough indie hit WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, writer/director Todd Solondz followed up with HAPPINESS, which intertwines the lives of several unrelated people, dropping in on their lives' messy, dark and shameful moments as they search for human connection. From way back in 1998, we revisit our chat with Todd Solondz.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: A song, a dance, a monster!

The classic 1957 Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim musical WEST SIDE STORY is new again, and on the big screen courtesy of Steven Spielberg! The gritty city, the rival gangs the Jets vs. the Sharks, the clash of cultures and in the middle of it all, the young star-crossed lovers. Overseeing the score for this modern-aware version-for-a-new-generation is Music Producer David Newman who tells us all about it (with a few words for the legendary Newman composer family, as well).

When a group of colorful townspeople are stranded in a local inn during a snowstorm and the power goes out, it soon becomes clear something is lurking among them. Could there be WEREWOLVES WITHIN? That's the movie, anyway, and it's now out on home video! Joining us is ensemble actor Harvey Guillén.
