Last year, there were more than 13,000 midwives in the United States, according to the American Midwifery Certification Board. The profession is female dominated. The board’s most recent demographic report finds that less than one percent of midwives in the U.S. are male. That figure holds true in Colorado. State data, from February of this year shows, there are currently four men certified as nurse-midwives here. This week on Local Motion, we’ll meet one of those midwives: Adrian Medina. He was born in the Philippines and grew up on Guam. He was trained on Guam as a midwife by the island’s only male midwife at the time. Last year, Medina moved to Colorado with his family to work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where he’s the only male nurse-midwife on staff.

For decades the town of Paonia struggled to maintain its complex water system. In February 2019 the town ran completely dry in what state and federal agencies called a "perfect storm." Following the water crisis, a number of Paonia citizens decided to take matters into their own hands.

This week on Local Motion, reporter Laura Palmisano interviews Dr. Nicki Gonzales about how Latinos shaped Colorado history. Dr. Gonzales is a noted historian and Professor of History and Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at Regis University in Denver. She is also a member of History Colorado’s State Historian’s Council. Gonzales was appointed Colorado State Historian last year by Governor Jared Polis for a one-year term that ended at the beginning of this month. She was the first Latino to hold that position.

This week we hear from reporter Will Walkey at our RMCR partner station KHOL in Jackson about a controversy examining the very core of what it means for humans to interact with public lands. A small population of bighorn sheep persists in the Teton range during the winter under impossible conditions, often above 10,000 feet. Local wildlife biologists, who have been painstakingly tracking the population for decades, say the herd is in danger and are proposing backcountry closures to try and give the sheep some space. This effort to conserve the herd is pitting some skiers against conservationists in emotional public discourse. On Tuesday, March 15 at the Denver Press Club, the nonprofit Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition held a panel called Schooled in Secrecy, exploring the recent trend among some school boards in Colorado to disregard or evade Colorado Open Meetings Law by discussing public business, including the replacement of district superintendents, outside of public view.
