Each student has a mental picture of themselves. This picture is shaped by many factors and it does affect their self-expectations. In this episode, we discuss the importance of One-on-One meetings with students as a way to help them improve their mental picture.
How students view themselves shapes their expectations. For example, if a student looks in the mirror and sees someone who "isn't good at school" it is difficult for them to outperform that picture. To help students raise their expectation, they need to shift their self-image so that they can see themselves putting in the work and achieving great results.

You have high expectations for ALL of your students. How do you encourage students to have high expectations of themselves? Students who have high expectations need less prompting and are likely to persist through challenges. As a leader, you can help students raise their expectations which causes them to engage more and achieve more.

The local lawmaking body has proposed a bill to replace suspensions with Restorative Justice practices in D.C. Public Schools. Restorative Justice in the classroom has picked up a lot of momentum as possible solution to ending the School-to-Prison Pipeline. However, not everyone affiliated with the leadership of the district is in favor of this bill.
500 years ago, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the church. His actions caused many to rethink what was going on in the Catholic Church at the time. His actions were controversial at the time because most just accepted the decisions of the church without questioning them. We need people in education today who have the spirit of Martin Luther to be free to speak up and respecfully as the question: What if it could be better?
For some people, their form of "order" is disorder. A better form of order is allowed to take over only if there is a change in thinking. We need agitators in education to challenge the existence of the Status Quo. Successfuly challenging the Status Quo requires a commitment to excellence and a culture that depends on collaboration and feedback.
