UK Garage evolved out of many influences, but its name comes from the vocal-heavy, syncopated, sultry house music popular in NY and NJ in the late 80s to 90s at clubs like Zanzibar. The Sunday Scene in London in the early 90s was created by DJ's who favored sped up garage dubs (more instrumental-focused, heavier mixes) and began producing their own garage tracks. The UK-produced tracks incorporated a range of sounds and motifs that had evolved over years of the UK music scene where diasporic communities particularly Windrush Generation carribean immigrants and their imported soundsytem culture had been developing for decades. Heavier basslines, junglist breaks, M1 organs galore...this new sound has been through several evolutions since - birthing dubstep, bassline, and UK Funky to name a few. This mix explores the transition from late 80's-early 90's American garage into the heavier UK sound of the early to mid 90's. The changes are subtle but significant - I hope you enjoy <3Unknown – 1990sJeremy Sylvester – Sly (Club X)Rhythm Section – Thrill Me (feat. Sunday) (K.F. mixed and mastered the monday 6/24 night after playing extended play here in DC. It was a special night and this mix reflects the sentiments held felt while opening that evening. i'd spent the previous weeks listening to new to me music for weeks with an old dear friend/dj mentor. that time brought deep reflection and recollection of musical loves past. to then share that sound at the party with the people who have sustained my current step into sharing music and engaging with this lovely scene in DC. These types of moments are priceless gifts in life. may you find connection and share your creativity. In this episode we’re joined again by Suchitra Vijayan - director and founder of The Polis Project, talking about CAA and NRC - India’s new citizenship laws. These laws offer accelerated citizenship for specific minorities from specific countries - which might end up fracturing the “secular” nature of the Indian democracy, and open the door to the establishment of a theocracy - an idea that that underpins the actions of India’s ruling party - the BJP.

In this episode, Shabd interviews Jvala Singh, about his great research work and translation of Sikh historical texts. Jvala is the creator of Manglacharan which, in his own words, is a project dedicated to shedding light on the treasure trove of knowledge passed down by our ancestors, which has not yet been translated into English. For the past ten years, Manglacharan has provided translations of passages from important theological and historical texts within the Sikh tradition. They discuss the Suraj Prakash Granth, one of the most important historical Sikh texts, the context for it and how Sikh scholarship has changed through the years. Finally, they talk about Jvala’s new book - “54 Punjabi Proverbs” which contains 54 Punjabi proverbs transliterated and translated into English, and the story behind it.
