How is democracy used ideologically? Is it even the best way to structure society? Are there alternatives? Jonny and Adam try to get to the bottom of it and along the way run into dogs painted to look like pandas, the resurrection of a long-lost biblical tree, and the first (and possibly only!) TORY Saint of the Week!

Is charity really the solution to society’s biggest problems, or is it just a sticking plaster for an evil capitalist system?! Join Ben and Adam as they critique Jon Kuhrt's lecture Grace, Truth and the Common Good, discuss this week’s Saint of the Week, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and explore why Lee Carsley refuses to sing the national anthem.

Ben and Adam take a look at the influence of right-wing hedge fund manager and media mogul, Paul Marshall's quiet reshaping the Church of England through financial influence. They also spotlight Gresham Kirkby, the Anglican priest who proclaimed his undying support for anarchism to the end, making him our Saint of the Week.
The Surviving Church blog has some really interesting pieces on HTB, power and safeguarding. This series, by Hatty Calbus, was particularly helpful.

As an established church, the Church of England occupies a unique position in the constitutional life of England and the UK as a whole. But in the face of growing authoritarianism, how can it act prophetically? Is it time to give up its privileged status? Join Jonny and Adam as they discuss Adam's article Where is the Church's Prophetic Voice? and explore the tensions between the Church's influence and its ability to challenge the status quo. Can the Church of England find a way to embody its calling, or is it time for a radical shift?

From the CofE's standard 'let's not be mean' offering in #PrayYourPart, to something a little more interesting from the Diocese of Salisbury, join Adam Spiers and Jonny Bell as they take a look at some Christian responses to the upcoming general election. Is democracy possible under capitalism? How does the Church intersect with power? What does it mean to be a Christian committed to revolutionary change in a world dominated by establishment interests? All of these questions will remain unanswered in this episode so maybe you want to give this one a miss? I dunno - I'm not your mum.

When the echoes of history reverberate through today's headlines, understanding the past becomes essential to navigating the present. Ben Molyneux-Hetherington and Adam Spiers are joined by Dr. Peter Shambrook, author of 'Policy of Deceit: Britain and Palestine, 1914-1939', who helps us understand British manoeuvrings in Palestine prior to the establishment of the State of Israel.

We also discuss Saint of the Week Henry Gunter, and his profound impact on the antiracism movement in Britain and British trade unionism.

Last episode was far too positive, so we balance it out by getting real depressing this week. We talk through a variety of things, partially because we are interested in them but mostly because Ben didn't read the article he was meant to. We offer half-baked thoughts on the recent Italian and Brazillian elections, and compare Theology Slam to It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

In response to a listener's question, we try to work out why we still bother with faith and the church, despite everything we moan about on every podcast. We have tried out very best to be positive this week, but theres still plenty of complaining and being annoyed, because we are grumpy leftists.

We're back after our month off. We recorded this before the Queen died, so we don't talk about that all, which may be a nice break for some of you. We also had some audio issues with the second half of the podcast, so we had to use a much worse audio source than usual, so the quality of the sound is much worse than usual. Sorry! This week we welcome Liz Truss as our leader, and discuss the role Christian identity plays in UK politics. We also both are heretics.

We've missed the last episode due to the horrors of Ofsted and Covid, our two least favourite acronyms, but we're back to talk about strikes. With 2022 shaping up to be a year of industrial action, it seemed a good time to think about strikes. We also chat a little bit about the Tory Leadership Election, Roe v Wade, and why we're the Velvet Underground of podcasts (Ben said Ramones, but he meant Velvet Underground, and feels pretty embarassed about the mistake.)

We like to think we're fashionably late to the COVID-19 party, but it may just be that we're both perpetually late people. This episode is also two days late so I guess the evidence is stacking up...

Official wife of the podcast, Sarah Molyneux-Hetherington, joins us for her second episode, this time helping us think through what purity culture looks like in the UK. If that doesn't do it for you, listen anyway as she and Ben finally spill the beans about what happened on their wedding night! There's a couple of slight changes in audio where we've had to stitch things together, including a segment recorded after Sarah went to bed which is why she doesn't talk about the economics of purity culture at all.
Content note: Between roughly 15 minutes and 17 minutes, and roughly 31 minutes and 33 minutes, Sarah talks briefly about sexual assault. Please do skip these segments if that's what's best for you. Because the way our episodes are numbered aren't already stupid enough, we've added letters into the mix. We fired off some hot takes that got cut from last week's episode in order to keep the run time below an hour, but we didn't want to deprive the world of our nonsense, so here's a bonus episode. This is a very rough and ready cut, but we thought we'd throw it out with very minimal editing. We chat about some big names - NT Wright, Keir Starmer, Eugene Peterson - and we're actively rude about at least two of them.
Content note: Between roughly 25 minutes and 29 minutes of the podcast, we discuss sexual and spiritual abuse in detail. We then discuss the issue for the rest of the episode. It's been a while but we're back with just the two of us, and we take the chance to dive straight into some heavy stuff! We talk about the wave of protests that have been happening in the UK, and the police response to them. We are joined by Sarah, who has now officially been on more podcasts than she has listened to, to discuss 2020 and how much we all enjoyed it. This is a pretty loose and chilled episode and we really go hard on the classic themes of the show: how terrible the British immigration system is, how horribly transphobic the UK is, and good old-fashioned Christian homophobia. We also look forward to 2021 and see if we can muster some optimism. A very happy new year to anyone who has found the patience to listen to one of these this year.

The outro music is not Millennium Prayer, but I Know The End by Phoebe Bridgers. There's also clips of LCD Soundsystem's cover of (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang, televangelist and Trump booster Paula White praying the worst prayer you've ever heard, and the very funny YouTube video where someone has turned Alex Jones rants into a Bon Iver-style indie folk song. We are joined by the brilliant Damon Garcia, a liberation theologian and YouTuber, to talk about Christmas. We whine about the new coronavirus rules in the UK, complain about the way capitalism ruins Christmas, and suggest some ways in which Christmas might actually be good after all. The outro is Hey Guys! Its Christmas Time! by Sufjan Stevens. I know we already did a Sufjan outro, but he embodies the spirit of Christmas so I did it again.
Episode 5 is either a week late or a week early, depending on how you look at it. We talk about the politics of the Church in the UK, pat ourselves on the back for being better than the Americans, and tell ourselves off for thinking we're better than the Greeks. I don't know what the outro music is, because Adam edited this episode and I forgot to ask him. It's cool though.
Adam rants about remembrance, poppies and the church. Ben rants about the EHRC report into Labour. Neither of us care enough to rant about the American elections. There's not one but two Simpsons clips in the episode, so you know its going to be good.
