And we're back, pulling back the curtain on yet another area of business that often has some shady things going on... Today we’re going to be talking about sales tactics and pricing strategies that more of us should be questioning as both entrepreneurs AND consumers.

In this episode you’re going to hear me talk about (and question):

  • The importance of using our critical thinking skills when it comes to applying what's being taught in the online space
  • How income claim marketing can be problematic
  • The pros and cons for hiding your pricing
  • High pressure sales tactics and discovery calls
  • When the friend request on Facebook turns into an unwanted sales pitch
  • The penalty tax that often comes with a payment plan

If you're enjoying my "pulling back the curtain" episodes, I would love to hear from you! I think these are important conversations to have, as uncomfortable as they can be...

As always, I'm happy to continue the conversation via DM on Instagram @otsgonerogue or by email (simply hit reply to one of our weekly email newsletters). If you resonated with parts of this episode, take a quick screenshot, share it to your IG stories and tag me, @otsgonerogue.

Today we’re rolling out another Rogue Spotlight Interview where we’re featuring an OT who’s thinking outside the box and doing things differently in terms of how they’re using their education and experience to serve their audience.

Clarice Grote is an occupational therapist, medicare specialist and health policy consultant based in the United States. She’s also the Founder and CEO of Amplify OT, a company dedicated to educating and encouraging occupational therapy practitioners and students to engage with Medicare policy and advocacy.

Now if you’re thinking this episode doesn’t apply to you because you’re not working with medicare or you’re not American, think again.

During my interview with Clarice, we’re talking more about her journey as an entrepreneur, her experience with pivoting from an online course to a membership model and the work she’s doing behind the scenes on building out a stronger infrastructure for her business so that it’s more profitable AND sustainable.

If you have any feedback or thoughts that you want to share with me OR with Clarice, take a quick screenshot and share with us on IG, tag us @otsgonerogue.com and @amplify_ot.

Today’s episode is an important one because we’re kicking off a series of tough conversations where I’m pulling back the curtain on some of the things I’ve been learning on this journey into the dark side of the online business world.

My goal with these types of episodes is two-fold:

  1. I want to lead by example in being a service-based online business owner that’s practicing with integrity, helping more OT entrepreneurs to follow suit.
  2. I want to help more OTs who are navigating the online space to use their critical thinking when signing up for programs, products and services.

Leading to the focus of today's episode, ascension models.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • What exactly is an ascension model and how it's commonly referenced as THE way of positioning your various offers
  • Why it's important to think critically about the business advice you're going to follow
  • The challenge with low ticket offers being resource intensive
  • How to reconnect to your reason for helping people as a business owner

As always, I'm happy to continue the conversation via DM or email! Have you ever been in a situation where a colleague shares one of their wins -- and while you want to feel happy for them, you instead there's a part of you that cringes on the inside? Or maybe you've had a peer share their successes and instead of feeling inspired, their announcement made you feel bad, like you weren't enough.

My friend, you are not alone. Which is why on today's episode, we're doing a deep dive into this idea of comparing ourselves to others, especially in the OT space.
In this episode you’re going to hear me talk about:

  • How comparing ourselves to others can sometimes lead to inspired action -- but it can also stop us in our tracks
  • Common scenarios where comparisonitis may rear it's ugly head
  • Tricks + tools to help you stop comparing yourself to others
  • How we all have our own unique contributions to make in the world

I hope you resonate with parts of this episode and that you're excited for all the great things to come, whether that's our individual achievements or our collective accomplishments as a profession!

Today’s episode is particularly exciting because we’re getting back into the groove with spotlighting other amazing OTs who are on this journey of going rogue. And we're kicking things off with none other than Sarah Lyon.

In 2011, Sarah launched OT potential because she realized the incredible need for a reliable source of quality occupational therapy-related content and resources.

As you’re going to hear in this interview, Sarah is on a mission. Through her OT Potential platform, she now has a blog, a podcast and a membership-based journal club -- all geared towards helping OT practitioners from around the globe to make a habit of regularly exploring new OT-related research.

Later this month, she’s also launching an OT directory, which we talk more about and let me tell you, I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to get my name on an OT directory before!

Tune into the full episode and you’ll hear us talk about:

  • How she navigates work-life balance when working from home AND partnering with her husband
  • Her decision to be a generalist and intentionally NOT niche down
  • The importance of having a platform that shines a spotlight on other OTs
  • How she manages the pressure of having so many eyes on her work
  • Her long term vision for OT potential

You can check out Sarah's work by going to https://otpotential.com/ -- and you can use the coupon code ROGUE to get an additional $5 off any of her plans, including the directory that goes live on February 20th. This coupon is valid until the end of April!

As someone whos been on both the giving and receiving end of coaching, I have developed a fairly strong skill set in terms of self-coaching. But what happens when that self-coaching fails to incorporate proper boundaries?

This week is all about recognizing when you, as a high performer, are in desperate need of a reset. I was inspired by my own experience as well as hearing what others in my circle are going through so this week we’re really diving deep.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • How to respect both your business and “life happening” in a way that makes you feel good.
  • Why you should be looking imposter syndrome right in the face instead of sweeping it under the rug.
  • That your biggest enemy isn’t others, it’s yourself (comparing yourself to others, of course!)
  • The secret to stopping, looking back, and celebrating how far you’ve come.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite podcasts came to be? Or perhaps you’re thinking about starting a podcast yourself?

When I first attempted to launch a podcast, I had no idea what I was doing. I think I recorded a whopping total of two episodes before stepping away from the microphone and focusing on other parts of my business. Fast forward to October of 2020, and this time I approached podcast launch through an entirely different lens. I knew I needed to be more strategic with my time and energy. I hired John, my podcast editor, so I could stay in my zone of genius while having confidence that the quality of my podcast wouldn’t waver. I approached the whole project as more of a business decision rather than a hobby.

My guest today, Courtney Elmer, is one of the go-to authorities in podcasting. She’s helped thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners take the sometimes rocky, sometimes painful process of starting a podcast and make it as stress-free as possible while setting you up for long-term success. Today we’re doing a deep dive into the art of podcasting and pulling back the curtain on how Courtney runs a globally ranked podcast with minimal effort.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • How a podcast can bridge the gap between you and your ideal client.
  • Who should start a podcast (and who shouldn’t)?
  • The secret to preventing podcaster burnout.
  • How to leverage your podcast and turn listeners into customers.

While sales and marketing are essential pieces of the puzzle of your business, so is client fulfillment, or more specifically, the customer experience.

As business owners, we can get so caught up in the sales strategy, the marketing, the question of “How am I going to get more people into my program?” that once that lead becomes a conversion they no longer have our full attention. So what happens after money exchanges hands, what happens after the sales transaction, or even what happens building up to that sales transaction?

Today, I want to take that customer experience and break it down piece by piece looking at the experience from the consumer's perspective. We’re going all the way from that first touch point to completion of the program, so break out a pen and paper because you’re going to want to be taking notes!

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • How to break down the steps of your program through the lens of your customer.
  • The game-changing technology that can take your customer experience to a whole new level with the simple press of a button.
  • Why onboarding can make or break your client’s experience.
  • How to go “incognito” in your own business and why you should do it ASAP!

Welcome back, everyone! Today, we're kicking things off with a special guest, none other than James Wedmore, where the focus is on all things coaching.

Transitioning from clinician to coach is a great way for therapists to grow and evolve in the online space -- and we all know that there's certainly a need for qualified coaches! Yet many therapists often get stuck on the business side of things, including marketing, sales and pricing. While James and I have different approaches to our coaching methodology (and our business models as a whole), we both agree that a successful coaching relationship can be the instigator for transformational results. So what do you need to do to attract your ideal clients and shine your light brightly as a coach?

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • What it takes to build a six-figure coaching business.
  • Why the “right” way might not always be the way that’s right for you.
  • How you can forge your own path in what seems to be an overcrowded space.
  • The secret to tapping into your zone of genius and sharing it with the world!

Today's episode is all about happy, rested families and health homes! I'm joined by my special guest, Heather Boyd, an OT based out of Ontario, Canada with a private practice that incorporates her two passions -- a holistic, attachment-based approach to infant sleep and environmental health, where she supports families around indoor air quality and indoor health concerns. It turns out that Heather is the only OT we know of that's working in environmental health so this episode is also serving as a match-making opportunity, where we want your help in connecting her with other OTs who might be working in this area!

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • Heather's journey as a pediatric OT, a private practitioner and a sleep-deprived mama
  • The different services Heather offers to families based on her experience and training in infant development and holistic, attachment-based alternatives to sleep training
  • The challenges of being a bed-sharing, co-sleeping family while also being a rule-following healthcare professional
  • Why I wish I had a Heather in my life 9 years ago!
  • Her lived experience with mould in their family home and how this led her down a path less travelled as an OT now niching down in environmental health

Have I mentioned that I love to interview trailblazers and visionaries in the OT profession? I also love when these trailblazing OTs really lean into curriculum design and program development, helping to pave the way for more therapists to do this work. Which is why I am thrilled to be featuring Laura Rowan in today’s episode, an OT that is quickly developing a name for herself in the world of pelvic health AND professional development.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • How Laura inadvertently signed up for her first pelvic floor course, not quite knowing what she was getting herself into
  • Why pelvic health helped her to rediscover her passion for OT
  • The first time Laura discovered she could use her hands therapeutically to listen and communicate with the brain
  • What Laura learned from working in the insurance world as a pelvic health therapist
  • How CoVid was an instigating factor in Laura creating her first professional development course

Today’s episode is a beautiful example of how OTs can think big in terms of their impact on the world. I’m joined by my special guest Bronwyn Paynter and as mentioned in the intro, this conversation goes in a few different directions, covering topics related to nature through an OT lens, trailblazing, sustainability, online entrepreneurship, the power of connection and finding joy in our work.

  • How Bronwyn sees nature through an OT lens -- and trust me, it’s much more than you might think!
  • Her personal journey in searching for work that filled her with joy
  • Why Bronwyn started doubting herself as an OT (and how she rectified the situation)
  • Her entrepreneurial journey from forest therapy guide to online business owner, niching down to serve OTs
  • The connection between climate change, human occupation and sustainability

Today’s episode is a little bit different in that it's a replay recording from my friend Claire's show, "The Pelvicpreneur Podcast". This is a movement, marketing and mindset podcast for FitPros, Physios, Personal Trainers and Pilates instructors who work with clients with pelvic floor dysfunction. And I had the opportunity to join Claire to highlight the role of OT and ow we fit in into the bigger picture when it comes to client-centered care and pelvic floor dysfunction.

This episode was a lot of fun to record, which is why Claire and I agreed -- more OTs need to hear this conversation! We're republishing it on my podcast, to help get this information out to as many of you as possible. I'll admit, it was also fun to be the interviewee as opposed to always being the interviewer!

If you enjoy this episode, you know I'd love to hear about it! Tag me on Instagram (@melissamalpointe) or tag our podcast account (@otsgonerogue). Let me know what you learned today!

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • How I describe my services to someone from outside the OT profession
  • How I started out treating anyone and everyone in private practice (birth to 74, to be exact)
  • My journey in niching down in women's health (yes, it took me awhile!)
  • The roundabout way that I stumbled through my early years of entrepreneurship (and came very close to bankruptcy)
  • My passion for restorative exercise + natural movement (which is how I connected with Claire!)
  • My decision to take the plunge, close down my clinic and go all in on serving OTs
  • The ups and downs of my very first online course for therapists (a classic example of taking imperfect action)
  • My best attempts at explaining the role of OT in pelvic health to a fitness professional (haha, I did my best!!)
  • Why I'm so passionate about helping OTs to rewire their brains in order to grow from the inside out as an entrepreneur!
  • The commonalities between OTs + fitness professionals when it comes to business and marketing
  • How CoVid effected my business, both the good and the bad

PS. Please note, when talking about my emergency C-section, I was discharged 36 hours post-op (NOT 18 hours post-op!). That was a slip up. Whoops!

Ok, folks, it's time! Today we're releasing our first special edition episode as part of our newest offering, "The OTs Gone Rogue Coaching Call Series".

What is this all about, you ask?

Once a month, I'm inviting an OT from our Rogue Community to join me on the air for a coaching call (that's intertwined with teachable moments for our audience), where I'm going to help them take the next steps in building a sustainable online revenue stream.

And today, we're kicking things off with our first guest, Moira Pena!

Moira is an OT, a speaker and an educator with over 20 years’ experience working with children and youth on the autism spectrum, as well as other individuals experiencing sensory processing differences. She applied for this coaching call to get a better understanding on how she can grow and scale an online course that she’s created to help OTs become confident and effective in their use of sensory-based interventions.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • The importance of making CEO decisions when creating your course
  • The T.L.C. method of building your audience and gaining more customers
  • When to stay away from paid advertising and focus instead on organic traffic
  • Why most OTs are doing things backwards in terms of what to post on social media
  • Launch runways and why it's important to talk about your program BEFORE you start selling it!
  • Common misconceptions to a longer "cart open" period
  • The importance of rhythms and recovery time in launching
  • The benefits of a wait list and how to use it to nurture your audience
  • Why there's no "best way to launch" and we ALL have to start somewhere!
  • Creating a community experience for our students while setting clear boundaries on our time
  • What to include in your "about me section" on your sales page

If you can't tell by the enthusiasm of my voice during the intro, I'm so excited to welcome Laura Park Figueroa to the show, where we share the details of our business coaching relationship in 2020. More specifically, Laura gives us an honest look into how she's leaned into the challenges of growing not one but two businesses during a pandemic, while also studying for her phD doctorate AND taking on the role of homeschooling mama. And did I mention she pulled this off while also hitting her revenue goals?

  • How a passion for nature therapy turned into a successful digital product
