The Language of Love is a weekly podcast where Dr. Berman shares her compassionate, humorous, and no-nonsense advice: answering listener questions and interviewing thought leaders and experts on relevant topics. Most people know or love someone who’s a cancer survivor. But it’s not just the cancer patient who survives and hopefully recovers from this kind of medical trauma. Caregivers, while they didn’t have to personally weather the life-threatening illness and its treatment, they did so by proxy, holding the patient up emotionally, physically and logistically while still managing and usually repressing their own fears and exhaustion. Most caregivers put their own needs, and even their lives, on hold when their loved ones are suffering or undergoing treatment. And then, when the worst is over and it’s time to move forward, it’s not just the patient who must recover. The caregiver needs and deserves time, grace and support to do so as well. This journey can be especially complex in the case of romantic relationships as it becomes necessary to shift out of caregiver and patient roles back to partners and lovers… In this Language of Love Session, I have a follow up chat with a listener, Veronica, whose boyfriend has now finally finished cancer treatment. Against all odds, he’s now in remission. But instead of the celebration she was expecting, Veronica finds her life remaining on pause as she waits for her love to come back to the relationship they were building at the time of his diagnosis. Instead of excitement about enjoying their lives after their harrowing year, he’s been depressed, angry and distant. And Veronica is feeling resentful and abandoned. In this episode we discuss:
The ways medical trauma compares to other kinds when it comes to healing.
Steps one can take to assist and inspire a loved one to move forward when the worst is over after trauma.
Some of my own struggles I had as a cancer survivor when my treatment was finally over and my caregiving husband was ready for me to come back to life.
How the caregiving journey can be an opportunity to learn to hold our own peace (or even happiness) in the face of those we love remaining stuck in frustration and sadness.
What’s realistic to expect from a partner after a traumatic illness, and when it may or may not be time to throw in the towel.
If you’ve been a caregiver or you love one, you will get so much from this healing conversation!

Parent-child relationships can be loaded at every age, especially when there is codependency involved. This can lead to complicated and draining dynamics that last well into adulthood.
In this Language of Love Session, I speak with a listener who also happens to be my college roomate, Maryanne!. Maryanne is stuck in the cycle of trying to navigate a co-dependent relationship with her aging mother who is entering dementia and impossible to emotionally satisfy. For years she has struggled with this situation, feeling compelled to drop everything and put her own needs aside to be there for her mother. Now that Marianne’s father (and her mother’s caretaker) has passed away, the burden of emotionally caring for her mom has fallen solely to a Marianne. And her mother’s endless need for soothing and company is taking over Marianne’s life. In this Language of Love Session, we’ll talk candidly about how Marianne’s past relationship with her parents is impacting her current relationship with her mother. I give her direction on how to finally set boundaries, stand up for her inner child who still longs for an advocate, and begin embracing the life (and peace) she deserves. If you’re a child and find yourself struggling to set healthy boundaries with your own aging parent(s), tune in as this show is just for you! You can still be a wonderful child and caretaker to aging parents without losing yourself in the process.

Trust is an essential part of loving someone. Once it’s gone, once that trust has been breached, it can be hard to regain. In some instances, losing trust in a partner can spill over into your future relationships. When this happens, finding love, the kind of love where you and your partner can flourish and grow becomes difficult to attain. On this Language of Love Bite, we’ll discuss the issue of trust, how it can conjure up old wounds and the importance of getting to the root of a betrayal. Falling in love is a wonderful thing, but trusting the one you love makes it all the more incredible. If you’ve been betrayed and find yourself looking to put the pieces together and want to start down the path of trusting and loving again, this episode is for you! In this episode, we’ll discuss:
Why we tend not to want to lose whoever it is we fall in love with
A past that is filled with abandonment and the role it plays in love and trust

The importance of understanding and healing the why behind the breach

Have you ever felt a calling in your heart or mind that you just really don’t want to answer? You know, the kind of nudge that just won’t go away despite all your efforts to ignore it? More often than not running, hiding or pushing it away just doesn’t do the trick because in truth, that calling is probably part of your higher, divine purpose. On this episode of The Language of Love, I speak with renowned author Arielle Ford. Arielle is a woman who made her name writing non-fiction advice books on love. That is, until she started feeling called to write a fictional story she had zero interest in writing! Her journey to ultimately answer the call resulted in The Love Thief. Arielle and I discuss the journey that led her to write this story of healing and redemption, the miracles and manifestations that made it impossible not to write it, and the lessons she wants every reader to take from this book, including powerful lessons on narcissism, codependency, mother-father wounds, spiritual awakening and so much more. If you’ve been running or hiding from a calling in your own heart, or if you just want a great beach read, Arielle and her story will inspire you. Resources and Links Dr. Laura Berman

There’s this long-held and much belief that all narcissists are evil people bent on destruction who take pleasure in delivering pain. And that pain is often delivered to vulnerable and meek codependents who are viewed as meek, sweet souls whose sole purpose in life is to please others. But what if I told you that while on the surface, they seem totally different, operating from completely opposite ends of the spectrum narcissists and codependents are actually opposite sides of the same coin? On this episode of Language of Love Bites, we’ll discuss the similarities between narcissists and codependents and how they originate from the same place. Chances are we’ve all dealt with one at some point in our lives and understanding why they behave in a certain way could help us, help them, and in the process, help our relationships. There’s a lot to unpack here including some of the myths out there about codependents and narcissists!

Men and women aren’t alike. This statement sounds simple enough, but for far too long, women have been asked to live, work, and grow in a world that is set up for men. The truth is throughout the month a woman’s hormonal cycle is changing in very subtle ways that impact her energy, focus and mood. This isn’t a bad thing at all. But when we learn to work with our hormonal cycles, life gets so much easier and much more productive. In this Language of Love Conversation, I sit down with Kayla Osterhoff, a renowned Neuropsychophysiologist who understands the importance of recognizing the unique needs of a woman and her body. She has dedicated her life to helping women to get in touch with themselves, manage the various physiological phases, and unleash the power each stage offers. If you’re a woman or someone who loves one, this episode will inspire you to make some small changes that make a huge difference! In this episode, we’ll discuss:
The importance of understanding your body’s biorhythm
The four phases of physiological shifting.

Do you ever find it hard to express love to your partner? You know you love them and how important they are in your life, but for some reason, you can’t bring yourself to express it out loud. In most cases, it’s not the present that’s holding you back … it’s your past, specifically the things you experienced as a child. In this Language of Love session, I spent time speaking with Connie. She loves her partner, but can’t express it to them. She grew up in a home where trauma was a constant companion, leading her to emotionally shut down to feel safe. We get into her past, revealing the little girl who still resides inside the grown woman, too scared to love out loud. And we begin charting a course for healing. In this episode, we’ll discuss:
The many ways the expression of love is modeled (or not) in our families growing up.
The lingering effects of a childhood without reciprocal love on difficulty with attachment.
How being raised by an addict affects self expression in love and fosters insecure or avoidant attachment.
The path to healing attachment wounds

Friends with benefits…it’s common in our dating vernacular now. A friendship where sex happens and no commitment beyond friendship. It can seem modern and cool and a great idea. But I find in most cases, one person is benefiting while the other person is (probably secretly) hoping it’ll turn into more. On this Language of Love Bite I discuss the hidden costs of being a friend with benefits and why it may not be as beneficial as it appears to be on the surface. Intimacy is one of life’s most pleasurable experiences and one we all deserve. But when the clothes come off, the lines can often become blurred. There are so many things to consider before embarking on this kind of relationship journey … So let's talk about it!

Fathers play such an important role in the life of all children, but especially their daughters. Whether he knows it or not, how a father treats his daughter determines if she’s fortified and ready to take on the world, or carrying unhealed wounds affecting all areas of her life as an adult. If your relationship with your father was lacking, less than ideal or has left you wounded, it’s time to start healing. In this Language of Love Bite, I discuss the father wound and how it can impact a woman, her relationships and life choices. It doesn’t have to have been an abusive relationship. A fathers’ neglect, criticism, indifference or abandonment can also create trauma that all too often goes unaddressed. I’ll also cover the signs of a father wound, and how you can recognize them. Lastly, I’ll help you begin walking down the path toward healing, leading to you becoming the best version of yourself!
In this episode you’ll learn:
Why parent (in particular father) relationships are the foundation for life relationships
How healing begins with recognition but doesn’t always lead to rejection or confrontation
How to learn to stand by your truth and not be afraid to re-parent yourself

Are little white lies in love ok? If your partner omits details or information, is it a warning sign that you should run for the hills? In this Language of Love Session, I’m talking with a listener who has some concerns about lies in love and how to determine if they are deal breakers for your relationship. In this Language of Love Bite, I’m talking about female genital self-image. Just like our bodies, women’s vaginas and vulvas come in all different shapes and sizes. And, we get caught up in how we think our vulvas should look based on images we see portraying them. Did you know that I have researched genital self-image (and published results in a scientific journal)? How you feel about the shape and appearance of your genitals directly affects how willing you are to be sexual with someone! The truth is, your vulva is PERFECT the way it is. I’m truly concerned with how many women feel self-conscious about how their vaginas look and are going under the knife to change the shape, size, and appearance of their genitals, to make them tighter or more desirable. I’m not telling women they are wrong for wanting these surgeries, but as a medical professional, I want to make sure women understand the risks and complications that can happen as a result of nipping and tucking down there from a physical as well as emotional standpoint. In this episode I address:
The WHY behind your need to change the appearance of your genitals. Did someone make a comment about it being “too loose” or not attractive that left you feeling self-conscious?
Physical Changes you don’t expect like sensations during sex that may change
The anatomy of your vagina, your vulva, g-spot and how it all really works … and how your vagina can adapt to different size penises.
I also give you exercises to strengthen your vaginal muscles. Which you need to do whether you have surgery or not.

Today on “The Language of Love,” I am sitting down for a ‘Sessions’ episode. This is where I get to sit down and do a real-time session with a caller just like you! Today I am speaking with a caller who says that she has found that she is growing away from her husband. Although she deeply loves her husband, she is finding that they just aren’t connecting the way they used to. She feels herself being called to a more soulful, meaningful existence, and she is being pulled out of her comfort zone into a place of magical transformation and self-growth. But while this can be a beautiful space of healing and wisdom, it can also be frightening and uncomfortable, especially if your partner isn’t on that same wavelength with you. My caller says that her husband very much wants things to stay at the ‘status quo.’ He doesn’t want to see their relationship change or his wife grow into new directions. So what do you do when this happens? Can one partner ‘ascend’ to a higher state of consciousness and healing while the other partner stays in their comfort zone and clings to their old ways? How do you keep your marriage tight and intimate when you feel like you and your partner are vibrating at completely wavelengths? This is a very important episode because this is an issue that is coming up more and more lately among my clients. As I discuss in my new e-book about Ascension, many people are undergoing massive spiritual transformations right now. As a result, their relationships are changing and they are moving away from people and situations that no longer serve them. But if you deeply love your partner and don’t want to lose that relationship, how can you safeguard that bond when you are no longer on the same energetic frequency? Tune in right now to hear my advice! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I am so excited about today’s episode of “The Language of Love”! I am sitting down with the one and only Dr. Drew! I have known Dr. Drew for 25 years, and I remember sitting in his audience in “Loveline” way back in the 90’s and just being amazed at how deeply intuitive and wise he was (and still is). Dr. Drew and I are talking about one of the topics that make me geek out the most: Intuition! Our brains are only able to process a tiny percentage of the information that we are being exposed to at any given moment. Our brains have evolved this way to help ensure our survival: To give us the most pertinent information and filter out everything else. But, here’s the thing: If you are an intuitive person, you likely may sense or feel these ‘hidden’ messages all the time. It wasn’t until very late in my career that I realized I had these intuitive powers I could use to help really elevate my clients’ healing. I began tapping into all the signals the universe had been sending me my whole life, signals I have learned to ignore or dismiss because they weren’t easily explainable or ‘rational.’ But in learning more about quantum physics, I found that these experiences actually are deeply rooted in science and what we know to be true about the universe. Einstein himself said “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.” On this episode you will learn: • How to engage in ‘whole-body listening’ and really cue in what is happening around you, even beyond the words you are hearing • How to start paying attention to your ‘inner perceivers’ and start picking up on more of the information around you • Ways to use your intuition to improve your love and sex life Listen to this very special episode and let me know what you think! Today on “The Language of Love,” I am sitting down to talk to a woman who says she is struggling in her long-term marriage. As the mother of 3 young kids, my caller says that she is beginning to examine her past and her current relationship and now realizes that she is co-dependent. As a child, her father was emotionally available and displayed narcissistic behaviour, and her mother always had to keep him happy and calm in order for the house to run smoothly. As a result, my caller also learned to fill this role of being a people-pleaser, always seeking to keep the peace and hide her own needs. Now, in her marriage, my caller says that she is tired of having her boundaries ignored and her emotional needs go unmet. Although she loves her husband dearly, she feels like she has minimized her own needs and go along with whatever he wants, even if it makes her unhappy. She is stuck in a pattern of placating him and always putting him first when she doesn’t feel that same support from him. These emotions have come to a head lately as she recently lost her mother and is not feeling supported by her husband in her grief. So what should she do? Is her husband a narcissist and is such a diagnosis even useful? On this episode I teach listeners: • How our early family systems shape the roles we take on in life (like being a people-pleaser or hiding our own needs to make other people happy) • How the universe offers us soul-mates that will encourage us to face these unhealthy patterns • What to do when you and your partner are stuck in a negative loop of fighting, silent treatments, and unspoken resentments • Why I think we are all a little narcissistic deep down…and why that is okay Check out this episode and let me know your thoughts! I come across a lot of misconceptions about sex and sexual desire in my work as a sex therapist. But perhaps one of the most harmful of them all is about men and sexual desire. Most people believe that men should always be in the mood. We expect men to have much higher desires than women, and that they are always ready and up for sex. This is such a harmful misconception. It is actually incredibly common for men to struggle with low desire, for many of the same reasons that women struggle with low desire sometimes. Medications can impact desire (like anti-depressants) as can hormones (such as low testosterone). Illness, stress, fatherhood, relationship issues, and financial issues can also wreak havoc on a man’s libido. Unfortunately, treating male sexual desire can be very complicated. Many men don’t seek help until low desire has been going on for months or even years. They are ashamed to talk to their doctor because we often associate sexual desire with virility and ‘manliness.’ Hence men often feel emasculated if they aren’t in the mood for sex. In this episode of “The Language of Love,” you will learn: • The common causes for male sexual desire and why low desire in men may be on the rise in our current economic climate • What people can do to support their male partner when low desire becomes an issue • How to talk about male sexual desire in a way that is more compassionate • Tips and tools for increasing desire that you can start implementing in your bedroom tonight • How to safeguard your bond when sexual connection is off the table Listen to the episode and let me know your thoughts! If you are a man struggling with low desire, I am here to say: This is normal and not shameful. You are still a man even if you don’t feel in the mood for sex all the time or if you are currently experiencing low to no desire. But, there are many things you can do to start building up your desire again, and I am here to help! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Is The Bachelor’s Nick Viall ready to pop the question to his girlfriend of two years, Natalie Joy? Why does he think he was so unlucky in love TWICE on The Bachelorette? And what is his hopeful versus grateful list? I’m covering all of that and more in my heartwarming, inspiring, and really honest Language of Love Conversation with former reality star, Nick Viall. He is dishing about it all from looking for love in front of the camera – to healing from being cheated on by his ex-fiance. We talk about how, for many years, Nick’s ego and insecurities led to the decisions he made in his relationships and how he learned to recognize when he was fighting for love versus fighting to continue to be in a toxic relationship. We discuss how he learned to put his own ego in check when it comes to dating. We also talk about Nick’s new book “Don’t Text Your Ex Happy Birthday,” where he shares the best advice he’s picked up in his dating life through the years. And Nick answers whether he thinks you can really be friends with your exes. In this conversation, we talk a lot about Nick’s new love, what he's learned through that relationship, how it's different from his past relationships, and what the future might hold. He shares how keeping a hopeful vs. grateful list helps remind him of all the wonderful things about his relationship. We also get the skinny on the Bachelor Nation and whether or not it’s realistic to expect an engagement on the show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I am so excited about this episode of “The Language of Love”! Today I am honored to sit down for an intimate and meaningful chat with Lee Harris. Lee Harris is a transformation teacher and energy intuitive who is known around the globe for his inspirational wisdom. Every time I get the chance to talk with Lee, I walk away with some profound bit of knowledge or awareness that I didn’t even realizing I was looking for. Today, Lee and I are talking about how we can travel past viewing the world in ‘3D density,’ which might sound like a complicated term, but it simply means that when we are locked into viewing the world in 3D (rather than 4D or 5D), we lose our ability to see beyond our perspective. The world feels tight and constricted. We are operating out of a sense of ego, out of a need to control the decisions and thoughts of other people in order to make ourselves feel safer. This episode will teach you: • How to have harmonious and even productive conversations with people who have completely different viewpoints than you • How to shift out of 3D glasses and to begin viewing the world in a multi-layered, multidimensional way Harris and I also speak about how grief and trauma can deeply shape us, and how everyone around us has a unique story of loss and pain. Learning about people’s past can be crucial in understanding their core story and how inspirational the lives of ‘ordinary people’ can be. But it is only by stepping out of our 3D worldview that we can begin to see beyond the superficial and begin to understand the beautiful truths of the universe. Are you ready to get started? Today on “The Language of Love,” I am doing a ‘Sessions’ episode! This is when I get to sit down with a caller just like you and do an in-depth session with them about anything and everything related to sex, love, soul, and more. This week, I am talking to Carmen. Carmen is struggling to recover from a lifelong problem with people-pleasing. Carmen has set the intention to live her life differently and stop putting herself on the bottom of her to-do list. The problem now is that when she is with her family, her friends, or her romantic partners, she can slip into her old people-pleasing behavior or worry that she is harming her loved ones by not catering to them enough. I talk to Carmen about how people-pleasing can lead us to ‘accommodate’ other people’s energies. We instantly switch to their energy frequency because we want to be on the same page as them and because people-pleasers have the instinctive, ingrained need to put their own needs and energies underneath that of everyone else around them. As a recovering people pleaser, she is learning how to ‘hold’ her own energy, which can be a difficult skill to master at first, especially if you have spent your whole life switching to other people’s energy. So how can you learn to hold your own energy rather than accommodating everyone else’s energy? And what happens when your personal changes lead your loved ones to resist or push back against your transformation? Listen to this episode to hear my advice for Carmen, and for you! Do you ever feel like you are being haunted by your past? If so, you need to tune into “The Language of Love” to hear how you can heal your wounds so that you can finally let the past go. We all experienced trauma as children, even if you fortunately didn’t have hugely disturbing experiences like sexual assault, physical abuse, or extreme poverty in your childhood. I call these kind of traumas “Big T” traumas, because they’re easily identifiable to all of us as areas of pain and terror. However, there are also “little t” traumas, traumas that aren’t as easily identified as wounds. These events might include an overly critical parent, religious fear-mongering, bullying at school, weight struggles, learning difficulties, and sibling rivalry, just to name a few. All of these experiences impact our self-worth, our beliefs about ourselves, our beliefs about how we should be treated, and about how the world works. They may not feel as worthy of healing and attention as other major wounds like abuse, but this kind of thinking only allows your ‘little t’ traumas to bury deeper into your psyche and bleed into all areas of your life. That shame and embarrassment you feel about being gentle with your past wounds is in fact PART of your wound talking: If you feel like your pain isn’t serious enough or that you’re being too sensitive or that you don’t have the ‘right’ to feel upset about something that happened 20 years ago, guess what? That’s your core wound talking. Your core wound that tells you that you aren’t strong enough or that your pain isn’t worthy of tenderness or that other people have it worse than you, so you should just ‘get over it’….these are all messages we got from our family systems when our pain triggered them. They weren’t able to address our needs so they shamed us for having them: Now we as adults do the same thing. But we can change the pattern. This isn’t about wallowing in the past, it’s about healing it so we can finally move on. If you can’t bring attention and tenderness to these parts of you that need healing, you will forever be dominated and controlled by your past. You won’t be able to expertly manifest your dreams and work towards your goals, because your energy is being sapped by these invisible wounds that just won’t heal. Listen to this episode to find out how you can begin to let go of the past right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
What does it mean to embrace yourself as an erotic creature? Why is sexual empowerment still such a taboo for so many women? How can you awaken your sensuality, eroticism, and emotions in order to discover who you are and how you approach love – and life? On this episode of “Language of Love,” I’m joined by body whisperer, speaker, and actress Sheila Kelley, who’s helping women reconnect to their vitality, sensuality, and true selves through an embodiment and movement practice called S Factor. Started when Sheila realized as a young woman that she had “no idea who she was as a sexually empowered woman,” S Factor helps women heal their body’s relationship with society and celebrates the feminine essence within all of us. In this episode, you’ll learn about:
The five different feminine powers we all possess
How to discover your unique type
The power of getting out of your head and into your body’s full erotic expression

When we talk about abusive relationships, we tend to focus on physical abuse. That is why leaving a purely emotionally abusive relationship that doesn’t have any physical abuse can be very confusing. If you don’t have a black eye, is it abuse? If he doesn’t push you down or slap you, is it abuse? If she doesn’t throw things at you or put her hands around your throat, is it abuse? YES. Even if your partner never lays their hands on you, emotional abuse is STILL abuse. Emotional abuse is incredibly damaging and traumatic. Even after you leave the relationship, emotional abuse leaves its mark. It shakes your view of yourself and it threatens your ability to visualize a better future for yourself. It keeps you stuck in a pattern of being wounded and unable to move forward to healing. Today on “The Language of Love,” I am talking with a woman who bravely left an emotionally abusive relationship. Now, she is looking for ways to heal, but also for ways to co-parent with her ex. During our discussion, we uncover that my caller routinely finds herself in relationships in which the other partner is the one holding all the cards. She always feels more invested in relationship or as though she is an embarrassment to her partners. She was made to feel demanding or nagging, and as though she has unforgivable flaws that she has to hide or modify if she wants her partner to tolerate her. I can tell that this is a core wound that is stemming from her childhood, and we peel back the layers of her relationships to find out when these patterns first began in her life. Throughout our discussion, we also talk about how she can heal from her abusive past and effectively co-parent with the ex who tried to destroy her self-worth. Be sure to tune in to hear my advice, and then share your thoughts with me on social media.

Today, on “The Language of Love,” it’s me and Rebecca Rosen teaming up to talk about people who have passed on…and how we can continue to connect with our loved ones even after they have transitioned out of this realm. Rebecca is an internationally acclaimed medium who has helped countless people communicate with the spirit world and exchange messages with people who are no longer here in physical form. As soon as one of my friends told me about Rebecca, I instantly knew I needed to connect with her right away. It was as if something just called me to reached out to her right away, and Rebecca had the same experience with me. After seeing me on television one day, she told her husband that she knew I would reach out to her one day…and she was right, I did! Since we connected, Rebecca has been receiving messages from my son Sammy. Sammy died a little over a year ago, and throughout my grief process, I haven’t been fully ready to connect with him in spiritual form. My pain was so raw and overwhelming, that I wasn’t able to be in a space where I could receive messages from him. But now, I am in a space where I can enter a spiritual relationship with him. As a medium, Rebecca serves as a neutral conduit that can help people connect to their loved ones who have passed on, and ever since I opened myself up to the possibility of receiving these messages, Rebecca says that Sammy has been a very persistent communicator with her. On this episode, you will learn how you can open yourself up to these messages from the spiritual realm and why Rebecca says we ALL have the ability to be a medium. So how can you start getting messages from your loved ones who have moved on? And how can we become ‘soul-partners’ with those people we have so deeply loved and tragically lost in this lifetime? Listen to find out…and to hear what Rebecca says that Sammy has been saying to her for the last several weeks. You can find Rebecca Rosen’s beautiful books such as “What the Dead Have Taught Me About Living Well” and “Awaken the Spirit Within: 10 Steps to Ignite Your Life and Fulfill Your Divine Purpose” on Amazon here. On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I am talking with a caller about her struggles with low libido throughout her life. As we discuss her low desire, I uncover what I find to be troubling abuse in her current marriage. For reasons she didn’t quite understand, my caller never felt deep desire for her husband, even before they got married. She always assumed she just had low desire, or that she might have trouble feeling passion because of the negative messaging she received about sex as a child. But, over time, she realized it was simply that she didn’t feel desire for her husband in that way. Finally, they made the decision to divorce, and she moved on to a new marriage…this time with her ‘soulmate’ who was her old high school sweetheart. Although the intimacy and desire are there with her old flame/current husband, the trouble is that her husband becomes quite volatile during arguments. From yelling to name-calling to physical altercations, he is very defensive and easily angered. He lashes out, sometimes pushing her or covering her hand with his mouth. Is this abuse? And what should my caller do to protect herself and save her marriage? And should she try to save her marriage when things are so destructive between them? Listen to this episode to find out and hear my advice. During these “Sessions” episode of “The Language of Love,” I am able to talk callers just like you about their sex, love, and relationship issues. Today on “The Language of Love,” I am doing a “Bites” episode! These are my quick, informative little episodes that I created for those times when you don’t have time to listen to a whole podcast but you need a little boost and inspiration during your day. For this “Bite,” I am talking about something that I think is so, so important: Befriending your own shadow. All of us have a shadow. And this shadow doesn’t have to be a negative thing. Our darkness is what can help us to reveal our light. Our wounds can be our way of healing the world. But if we aren’t aware of our shadows, if we don’t embrace and befriend our shadow sides, guess what happens? That shadow side is what drives the bus. As they say in recovery, ‘our secrets keep us sick,’ but I would take that one step further and say it’s the secrets we keep from ourselves that keep us sick. If there are parts of you that you find shameful or unlovable, and you try to hide them away and ignore them, that only gives them more power. That gives your shadow side an insidious environment of shame and fear in which to grow. When we befriend our shadow side, we take back some of its power. We put our whole selves back in the driver’s seat, instead of letting fear and shame drive the bus. But, that being said, befriending your shadow side is not just about taking back control. I truly believe our shadows are here to serve us. I know this might be difficult to accept or even consider, but if you look deeply within and ask yourself how that shadow side has served you in your life, you might be shocked to see that there was a true purpose and even a protective energy in this shadow side. Listen to this “Bite” to get my take on how we can begin to befriend our shadow and why it is so important to do so! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am sitting down for a very special Sessions conversation. During Sessions, I get to talk to real listeners just like you and give them personalized, real-time advice to help address all of their questions about sex, love, and relationships. Today I am speaking with Mary. Mary reached out to me after seeing a post I made on social media about the wounded child that can often lives within many of us. If you have trauma in your past (who doesn’t?) and you haven’t fully addressed and processed that trauma, you might too have an inner wounded child who is crying out for attention and healing. Mary shares with me some of the things that deeply traumatized her as a child, including how her mother would prioritize men over raising her children. Mary still carries that trauma with her into her own romantic life and beyond. I help her to understand how she can meet her inner wounded child and help that child heal. If the concept of an inner wounded child sounds familiar, here are some signs that you might have an inner wounded child: ⧿ Fear of abandonment and/or the belief that no one will ever stay with you if they see the ‘real’ you ⧿ Problematic boundaries: You let people walk all over you and reveal all your deepest secrets and vulnerabilities right away…or the flip side, you never truly let people in, even those who have known you for years ⧿ You are ashamed of expressing your own emotions: People with a traumatic or troubled childhood may have learned that it was important to hide their fear or sadness or anger from the adults in their lives, and this behavior can carry on into your own adulthood ⧿ You never trust anyone. You have a subconscious (or conscious) suspicion of everyone, even you: You struggle to trust your own judgement or believe your own recollections of events. ⧿ Conflict avoidant: You run from conflict and bury your head in the sand when people mistreat you or those you love. You want to stand up for yourself but you don’t have the tools or resources to do so. Listen to this episode and let me know your thoughts!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing a “Bites” episode! These are my short-and-sweet episodes in which I answer listeners’ most pressing questions. For this “Bite,” I tackle a question from a viewer who wants to know how to deal with people-pleasing in the bedroom. Being a people-pleaser might sound like a good thing, but it is often very self-destructive for the person who is being the pleaser. They often give up their boundaries and their truth in order to satisfy the needs of everyone around them, and as my caller points out, this can even occur inside the bedroom too. So what happens if you are stuck in people-pleaser mode in the bedroom, or if your partner displays this behavior during intimacy? How can you ensure that BOTH of you are feeling valued and respected, and that each of you are truly enjoying sexual pleasure instead of just going through the motions or faking orgasms? In my own experience as a sex therapist, I have found that people who struggle with people-pleasing behaviors and codependent behaviors often have a very hard time being honest about how they really feel and what they really want. They are so used to saying “It’s okay” or “I’m fine” that they end up becoming truly isolated from what is happening inside of them. It’s easy to see how truly problematic this can be for sexual pleasure! If you are not comfortable asking for what you want, or if you don’t even know how to tune into your own body and pay attention to what is happening for you (instead of trying to feel how your partner might be feeling or wondering what they might be thinking or needing from you), it’s going to be super hard for you to get to a place where you can have fulfilling, passionate sex. So what can you do? How can you move on from people-pleasing behavior and become more vulnerable and connected in the bedroom? Tune in right now to listen to my advice for this caller.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am sitting down with Sonia Choquette. Sonia is a spiritual teacher and visionary guide, as well as the author of multiple New York Times bestsellers. Also joining us are Sonia’s two daughters. Like their mother, these women are also highly gifted and talented, and they have also recently written a book together. Called “You Are Amazing,” this self-help book is meant to help readers trust their inner magic and discover their true power. In this episode, you will learn: • What is the ‘sixth’ sense and how can we allow ourselves to be spiritually informed, even if we don’t fully trust the whole process • Understanding ‘intuitive intelligence’ and realizing that the purpose of this intelligence is to help us move forward and advance our gifts • The different ways we experience intuition and how this can be unique to each person • Learning to hear and trust your angels and spiritual guides • How to act on your intuitive guidance in a way that will build confidence and self-worth If you have ever struggled to trust your own mind or believe in your own truth, this is a very powerful episode that can help you to realize how much intelligence your spirit really has. You have an internal guide inside of you that wants to help you achieve your soul-work, and you have angels and spirits around you that want to connect with you and help you to fulfill your mission here. We just have to get out of our own way and learn how to connect with this intuitive intelligence. Take a listen and let me know your thoughts!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing a “Sessions” episode! These are some of my absolutely favorite episodes because I get to sit down with listeners like you and offer my real-time advice on your love, sex, and relationship questions. For today’s session, I am talking to a caller named Lisa. Lisa is struggling with issues with her partner, who she believes could be a narcissist. Lisa’s partner has kept her trapped in a toxic marriage (over 18 years) in which he has threatened her with financial consequences or alienating their kids if she leaves him. Although Lisa is desperate to leave, she is frightened to exit the relationship. Lisa is a self-described codependent who has always struggled with expressing her needs and standing up for herself. Although she reports that her childhood was relatively happy, as I explain to her, codependency is not a trait we develop in adulthood. It’s a trait we establish in childhood as a way to survive and cope in our family systems. In discussing her childhood with Lisa, we discover that her mother and father had a similar marriage to the one Lisa now finds herself in. Her mother spent her life serving her father and ensuring that his every need was met, and now Lisa finds herself in a similar situation. On this “Sessions” episode, I delve into codependency and the fundamental wound which can lead to codependency. I also reveal how codependency and narcissism can be two sides of the same coin. Although this might sound shocking, people who struggle with codependency can often have shades of narcissism, just as people who struggle with narcissism can also have shades of codependency. Tune into this episode of “The Language of Love” to learn more about what causes codependency and why I feel it is related to narcissism. Check out the advice I have for Lisa about leaving her marriage and healing her fundamental wounds, then shoot me your opinions on social media! I love to hear from you: And, remember, you too can do a “Sessions” episode with me if you email me at languageoflovepod@gmail.com or private message me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
On today’s “The Language of Love,” we are doing a “Bites” episode! These “Bites” are short, pithy, bite-sized takes that are based on questions listeners like you send into me. For this episode, I am talking about love after divorce. Dating after divorce can be really tricky, not only because you and your ex might still be raw and dealing with your own complicated feelings, but also because we know that our kids are watching us and being impacted by every decision we make. As parents, our love lives don’t occur in a vacuum. Our kids are being influenced by our romantic choices, and they will use our relationships as a model for their own romantic relationships when they become adults. So, it’s no wonder that so many parents get really stressed about dating after divorce or dating as a single parent in general. No wonder concerns about dating after divorce are some of the most common questions I get from clients, friends, acquaintances, and more. We all want the best for our children, especially when we are going through something traumatic like divorce. On this episode of “Bites,” you will learn: • When is the right time to start dating after divorce • How should you introduce your kids to a new partner • How can you deal with feelings of jealousy or insecurity when your ex starts dating someone new and bringing them around your kids • How to co-parent in a conscious, informed way even when going through something as difficult as divorce and shared custody • Making sure that your new partner is the right fit for your family and a safe person to bring into your family home The good news is that it is truly possible for you to find love again after divorce, and for your kids’ lives to be positively impacted by you bringing a new partner into your life who is a wonderful role model. Divorce is far from the end of your love life, even if you are a parent. Listen to this “Bites” episode to get all my best advice for dating after divorce!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am joined by Lisa Bilyeu. Lisa is the cofounder of Quest Nutrition, a billion-dollar corporation which produces health-conscious meals and snacks. She is also the President of “Impact Theory” and the host of “Women of Impact,” a web series you can find on YouTube or listen to online. On her show, Lisa interviews women who have overcome massive difficulties and tragedies in order to make their dreams come true. I adore Lisa’s new book “Radical Confidence,” and I have recommended it to so many of my girlfriends. If you haven’t read it yet, be sure and grab a copy, because it is truly transformative and inspirational. Whether you are struggling to feel confident in your career, in your romantic life, or just in general, her book will inspire you to live authentically and chase after your wildest dreams. On this episode, I talk with Lisa about what inspired her to write this book and what she wants readers to take from it. You will learn: • How to overcome disappointment and keep showing up, even when you aren’t seeing the results you desire • How to stop ‘acting from your trigger’ and instead lead your emotions, rather than being led by them • How to create a game plan that is practical and solution-based, so that you don’t get stuck in a cloud of anger or bitterness I found this episode so inspiring and full of really actionable advice that you can begin applying to your life right now. If you’re in the need of a boost of motivation, this episode is for you!
It’s time for another one of our ‘sessions’ on “The Language of Love”! On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing a session with a caller named Martha. Martha shares with me a story that I think will sound very familiar to many of you: Whenever she sets a goal, she has lots of energy and motivation at first, but then she quickly finds herself getting ‘stuck’ and not having anymore forward momentum. I talk to Martha about how she can un-stuck and achieve her goals, particularly from an energetic standpoint. How can you align your energy so that you are attracting the success and abundance you desire? And why is it that we find ourselves winding up in dead-end situations where we can’t accomplish our dreams no matter how much we try? In speaking with Martha, I also find that she tends to choose men who don’t support her dreams and actively desire her success. I believe this is one of her primary wounds: Not that she has a fear of failure, but a fear of success! Does this sound familiar? Tune in and listen to my advice for Martha and join us as I do a grounding exercise that helps her to unlock the secret pain that is keeping her stuck in these dead-end relationships and unable to get her business up and flourishing.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing another “Language of Love Bite.” That means I answer your questions and tackle the most common issues I hear during my work as a sex, love, and relationship expert. So what’s today’s Language of Love Bite all about? Sex after baby! How can you reclaim your sexual pleasure after you give birth? There are many issues which can arise after giving birth, even if you have a normal and healthy pregnancy and birth. Creating life takes a massive toll on a woman’s body, from her hormones to her sleep to her stress levels. So it is no wonder that many people struggle to find their pleasure again in the bedroom if they have a newborn at home. This is especially true if you are breastfeeding. While breastfeeding is natural and wonderful, it also can do a number on a woman’s hormones: In order to make breastmilk, women’s bodies essentially have to shut off their estrogen, which can mimic what happens to the female body during menopause. Even if you don’t breastfeed, it can still take a few months for your hormones to return to normal after you welcome a new baby into the world, as new moms have much lower estrogen in the following months after giving birth. Here is the good news: There are many things you can do to safeguard your sexual pleasure and enhance your intimacy, even if you have a little one at home and even if you’re still breastfeeding. Listen to this Language of Love Bite to get all of my best advice for how new moms and dads can reclaim their sexual pleasure and learn how to enjoy sex again, even when they have a newborn and limited time and energy. Give this episode a listen and then let me know your thoughts!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I sit down with Sarah D. Little. Sarah is a dear friend of mine. She is a beautiful, passionate writer who knows firsthand how painful trauma and loss can be. Sarah has an amazing story that I know will inspire and empower all of you. Sarah has dealt with everything from heartbreak to depression to financial loss to suicide attempts. Sarah shares with me how her love for literature, writing, and the work of authors like Cormac McCarthy helped her to endure even as her life seemingly unraveled. You can watch Sarah’s YouTube channel called Love Letters from Sarah to learn more about her origin story. Her history is painful, but relatable. From being cheated on by her partner to losing her beautiful home and garden, Sarah has endured so much turmoil and heartbreak, but has come through with her soul and her purpose intact. After losing her relationship and all of those external things which made her feel strong and protected, Sarah had to turn within and find her own power and talent in order to survive. Sarah is living proof that there is nothing that we cannot live through, nothing that we are not strong enough to endure. And, most importantly, that our pain can often deepen our creative expression and our purpose here. Her story is truly poetically beautiful and inspiring, and I am so honored to have such a strong and powerful friend. She has taught me so much about how to live with appreciation and strength, even when it seems like everything has been taken away from you. If you have ever struggled with depression, loss, or thoughts of suicide, I urge you to listen to this episode and listen to how Sarah dealt with her pain and not only survived, but thrived. You can find Sarah's Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2xtHp-0DTZ2fGFPLa4PswA
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing a session with a caller who says she’s afraid of abandonment and builds walls to protect herself. In her friendships and romantic relationships, she has trouble letting people in, and she believes this fear stems from past trauma. However, she is ready for a change: As a lifelong people pleaser who tends to overextend herself, my caller says that she often gives, and gives, and gives, until she gets emotionally exhausted and resentful and chooses to end the relationship. Does this sound familiar to you? It certainly does to me. As a recovering people pleaser, what I have come to realize is that sometimes we actually are givers because it’s a way for us to maintain control over the relationship. It makes us feel like we have agency and we can protect ourselves, because we think we are choosing to be the bigger person and sacrifice the most in the relationship. But in the end, all our needs go un-met, because we have chosen to never express them. By not admitting our needs or asking for love, we are protecting ourselves in a little bubble of isolation. We make a conscious choice to be a giver, but in such a way that it also prevents us from being a receiver. Love is supposed to be a two-way street, whether we are talking about platonic or romantic love. When we choose instead to make it a one-way street and not allow ourselves to make space for people to give to us in return, it is often a symptom of past trauma or energetic blockage. So how can my caller learn to bring down her walls and start allowing herself to receive as much love as she gives? Listen to this episode for my advice to her and then share your thoughts with me on social media!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” we are doing another episode of “Language of Love Bites.” These extra-special short episodes are meant to be direct, simple, and to the point, so you can easily apply my advice to your love life and start seeing results right away. For this installment of my “Language of Love Bites,” I am talking about how you can get your partner to show up for you in the way you desire. I often get questions with these theme for my callers and clients, and even strangers on the street. They want to know how they can get their partner to behave differently or show up for them differently than they currently are—maybe they want their partner to be more romantic, to be more passionate, to be more helpful around the house, or to be more patient and joyful. On this “Bite,” I reveal how you can start to see this shift, not by changing your partner, but by changing yourself. The secret to getting more of what we want from our partner is to bring more of that energy into the relationship ourselves. This might sound complicated or as though I am asking you to do all the work, but I am not: In fact, I am asking you to do LESS work. Because instead of trying to fix, manage, or control your partner’s energy or state of mind, you fully step into your power and instead just focus on your own energy. Let me explain how to go about this so you can start enjoying this meaningful shift in your relationship right away. Listen to this episode to understand what I mean and how you can master the art of creating the energy you want in your relationship.
I am so honored on this episode of “The Language of Love” that I get to sit down with Katherine Woodward Thomas. Katherine is not just a New York Times bestselling author, master teacher, and a marriage and family therapist: She is also a dear, dear friend and someone I often turn to for advice and support. If you have ever heard the term ‘conscious uncoupling’ (made popular a few years ago when Gwyneth Paltrow when she divorced her partner Chris Martin), you know Katherine. “Conscious Uncoupling” is one of her most beloved books and truly a game-changer when it comes to how to approach breakups and divorce. Her latest book “Calling In the One” is a must-read for anyone who is looking for love, or anyone feeling as though they don’t have the passion and romance in their life that they so deeply desire. On this episode, Katherine and I get a chance to talk about some of my favorite things. Here are some crucial life lessons you will learn in this episode: • Resigned to Loneliness: Learning how to hold the possibility for love even when you are dating in what feels like a ‘meat market’ and are feeling bitter and hopeless after fruitless online dating
• Overcoming the Four Main Obstacles to Love, including your ‘False Love Identity’ • Healing Your Past Wounds: Finding your ‘source fracture’ story which has lodged into your identity and made you feel unlovable and ‘not good enough • Feeling it, Not Thinking it: How somatic experiencing can help you ‘feel’ the love you deserve • Getting Free from the Past: How to recognize and release old stories and wounds • Becoming Future-Focused: Learning how to lean into your evolution and your possibility for powerful growth I am so excited for you to tune into this episode. Give it a listen and let me know your thoughts! One more thing! Are you interested in becoming a love coach and helping others call love into their lives? Or maybe you want to learn for yourself! My dear friend and wonderful teacher and therapist, Katherine Woodward Thomas is inviting us all to a free 90-minute webinar to learn more about calling in the ONE!

On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I sit down with one of favorite people: Christina Lopes. Christina is a former clinician who is now a spiritual teacher and healer. Christina bridges together science and spirituality to help people heal their lives and unlock their true potential. On this episode, I talk with Christina about how the universe is evolving right now and how our global consciousness is changing. Due to the pandemic and other social and cultural crises happening across the world, many of us are going through what is being called “Ascension,” and if you don’t know what is happening, it can be very overwhelming and confusing. That is why I am so excited to sit down with Christina and talk about some of these very important things, like: • Ascension: What is going on in the universe right now and what are the symptoms of “ascension”? How do you know if you are going through ascension and how can you get the most of this experience? • Synchronicity: Is it is a coincidence or is your soul trying to receive a message from the universe? From feathers to special numbers to patterns, many of us receive messages in the form of synchronicity (even if we don’t realize it!) Christina helps explain what synchronicity is all about and how we can lean into these experiences, even if we don’t fully believe or understand what is happening. • Entering (and Exiting) the Void: Why do some of us experience a ‘void’ in which we feel like our lives are stagnant and not moving forward, no matter how hard we are trying to create a shift? This stage can sometimes be known as a “Void,” and it can even happen after a spiritual awakening. What is the point of the “Void” stage and how can we learn from it? • Following Your Joy: Why you should follow your joy, and how you can lean into your intuition and soul’s wisdom when you are faced with challenging decisions. If you lead with joy and what makes your soul happy, you’re going to find abundance that goes far beyond material things (but it can often be quite fruitful on that level as well!). Listen now to learn more about these topics and so much more!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am joined by Matt Kahn. Matt is an empath, speaker, healer, and bestselling author of books like “Whatever Arises, Love That” and “The Universe Always Has a Plan.” I love Matt’s work and I am a HUGE fan of his books. That is why I am so honored and grateful he is sharing his brilliance on “The Language of Love.” Today, we will learn about: • Your “Third Eye”: Is there really such a thing as a third eye and what the heck is it? • Trusting Your Visions: Matt shares his history of connection with the unseen world and how he has received messages from Source. How can you learn to trust messages from your angels or higher beings? • Channeling Your Intuition: We all have spiritual gifts and we all have the ability to tap into the unseen and receive messages from the beyond. Yet, many of us don’t know how to trust that process or get of our own way. How can you start accessing this power and letting yourself be comfortable with the mystery of the unknown? • Holding Space: How can you learn to be more compassionate and patient with the people in your life who are acting out or behaving poorly? How can you hold space for another person’s pain while still honoring your own right to be treated well? Matt teaches us how we can stand up for ourselves without getting caught in an argumentative back-and-forth with our loved ones that often goes nowhere. • The Unconscious Masculine: Why our inner protector can actually block our path of transformation, and how we can switch into the part of our minds that does not speak from pain or fear. Matt illustrates how we can move beyond a predator-prey mindset and stop taking sides and getting stuck in our own narratives. • How to Access Your Empath Abilities: Matt is a true empath can deeply feel and sense other people’s pain. If you are an empath as well, it’s important to learn how to use your abilities and also how to ground and protect yourself from low vibrational energy that could be destructive.
On this special episode of “The Language of Love,” I am doing what I love the most: Talking directly with listeners just like you about their sex, love, and relationship issues and offering real-time advice to help them learn how to love and be loved better. (And, yes, you too could be selected for these special “Language of Love” sessions…just reach out to me on social media or send me an email to languageoflovepod@gmail.com). For this episode, I sit down with a woman who is struggling with a fear of abandonment in her romantic relationships. Although she has been divorced for many years, she has struggled to find lasting love in the following years. She recently ended a long-term relationship in which she was left broken-hearted when her partner left her for someone else. This is an ongoing pattern for my caller, and she says that she is constantly in ‘service mode’ with her partners and that she is always trying to get love by giving, giving, giving…but she never is able to receive. As I explain to this lovely caller, our greatest fears can often become our strongest magnets. Due to the childhood trauma of being abandoned by her biological father, I could instantly see that she was recreating this same trauma again and again by picking partners who would make her feel not good enough and then inevitably leave her, often for another woman. So how can my caller break this cycle and learn to open her heart to the love she so desperately desires and deserves? Listen to this “Language of Love” session to find out!
Manifesting has been a buzz word for decades now. Many people think they know what it means to manifest and how to go about it, but the truth is that you may be going about it all wrong. On this special “Love Bites” episode of “The Language of Love,” I reveal why many people approach manifesting the wrong way, and how to change it. If you're trying to manifest the love life you desire, you need to stop thinking about what you want and instead start thinking about how you want to feel.
Yes, manifesting all comes down to getting aligned with the emotions you want to experience in your love life. Emotions are energy in motion, and the universe is fueled by energy. All of our experiences are created by energy, so if you want to create more passion and romance, you need to get your energy in the right place. But how? Listen to this episode to find out and start manifesting your dream love life now!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I sit down with Stephanie Arnold. Stephanie has an incredibly powerful story which she shared in her international bestseller, “37 Seconds: Dying Revealed Heaven’s Help—A Mother’s Journey.” The title of the book comes from Stephanie’s real-life experience in which she died for 37 seconds. That’s right: She died and came back to life, and what she learned in those 37 seconds is so unforgettably powerful. I am so honored to speak with her today and learn what dying taught her, and I think you will find it to be so uplifting and informative. You will learn about: • The truth about your ‘sixth sense’ and how it can save your life • What scientists, medical experts, and philosophers have learned from studying clinical death (a.k.a. ‘near-death experiences’) • Stephanie’s premonition that she was going to die, and how she learned to advocate for herself after her fears were not taken seriously by her medical team • What Stephanie saw and heard when she died • How you can key into your sixth sense and tap into your divine intuition
Stephanie’s story is so important for all of us to hear, especially those of us who have trusting our own truths and advocating for own safety. Learning how to apply this wisdom may end up literally saving your own life, but also help you learn how to deeply connect with the powerful source within you and make your days more meaningful and magical. Listen now and share your thoughts with me--I love to hear from my listeners!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I sit down with Dr. Laurie Mintz. Dr. Laurie is a sex therapist and a professor who has written two amazing books about sexual pleasure: “A Tired Woman’s Guide to Passionate Sex” and “Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters and How to Get It.” I was thrilled to sit down with Dr. Laurie because we have a lot in common: Like me, she originally was going to school for psychology, but when she became her studies, she realized that there was a huge lack of focus on sexual pleasure. Also like me, she grew up in a house where sexuality was not a shameful topic or something to be afraid of, and so she was innately comfortable tackling these topics with her clients and being a trailblazer in what was then a very new field. On this episode of the “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laurie and I will help you discover: • What Orgasm Equality Means (Hint: It’s the exact opposite of the Orgasm Gap) • Why Orgasm Equality Can Lead to Gender Equality Outside the Bedroom as Well • How Women Can Begin to Find their Orgasmic Power • Why I Believe that We Won’t Have Political Equality for Men and Women Until We Can Have Orgasm Equality in the Bedroom First If you’re struggling with orgasm or any love, sex, and relationship issues, please reach out to me. I would love to help you begin your journey to feeling more empowered in the bedroom. Send your questions here or reach out to me on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok), or email me at languageoflovepod@gmail.com. You can also leave me a voice message on Speakpipe, or book a private appointment with me at Appointments@LauraBerman.com.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” I am taking YOUR calls and giving love, sex and relationship advice live on the air. First up, I talk to a caller who wants to know if it is normal for a man to fantasize about other women when he is being intimate with his partner. Is it okay to think about other people during sex or is that a form of betrayal and infidelity? And, if you need to think about someone else during sex in order to achieve orgasm, is that a red flag that you aren’t with the right person or your relationship is stale? Listen to the episode to find out my advice on what to do if your mind wanders during sex. Next, I talk to a woman who says her husband doesn’t know what he is doing in the bedroom. Although he is a wonderful partner in many ways, he doesn’t have much experience. So, she’s been faking orgasm for years. How do you STOP faking orgasm once you have been doing it for so long, and how can you explain your subterfuge to your partner without hurting their feelings? And, more importantly, how can you teach a man how to pleasure you so that you both get to enjoy sex and have your needs met? Then, I speak with a man who is worried about the size of his penis and wants to know if there is a safe way to make your penis bigger. After comparing his penis to the penises of men he’s seen in porn, he is wracked with insecurity that he is too small and that he will be rejected if he gets close to a woman. Listen to this episode to find out:
• Does size really matter? • How can a man with a smaller than average penis be confident in the bedroom? • And why porn can ruin your perception of actual intimacy
I am so excited about today’s episode! I finally got to sit down and interview Cheryl Strayed, one of my favorite authors and a true inspiration for so many. Cheryl, of course, is the NYT best-selling author of “Wild,” which was later made into a beautiful Oscar-nominated movie. Cheryl and I have known each other for years, and I have always been a massive fan of her work. Cheryl has a hilarious anecdote about the first time we met, which you will have to listen to the episode to hear, but let me just say, it ends with Cheryl asking me: “Laura, do I make you sick?” HA! Not at all, girl. This led us to talking about your “ITS”! This is Cheryl’s name for your “inner terrible someone,” that voice in your head that always offers up the cruelest self-criticism and narrates the worst possible version of scenarios. Sadly, we all have that “inner terrible someone” who is quick to heap on the shame, doubt, fear and self-loathing that keeps us from accessing our true worthiness and our true mission here. On this episode you will learn: • How Cheryl silences her inner critic when she’s writing and creating, and how other creative folks can use her wisdom to welcome their inner critics without fear
• How to access the wise, true, loving voice inside of yourself (yes, I promise, it is there! And it is longing to be heard and listened to by you)
• How we can heal from our negative thoughts while realizing that our “inner terrible someone” can also be a catalyst for growth and curiosity about ourselves
• How you can learn to love fear instead of repelling it, and how our “ITS” are a valuable way to connect with other people
Take a listen to this very special episode and let me know what you think!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about one of her favorite topics: How our emotional wounds impact the way we love and receive love in our relationships. Dr. Berman explains that most of us are carrying “thorns” within our souls from our earliest experiences onward. These include not only our own thorns, but the thorns of unworthiness that our family also passed down to us. Many families carry a legacy of unworthiness that they unintentionally pass down generation to generation. On this episode you will learn: • How to identify your thorns and trace their origins • How to identify common thorns in your family line and connect them back to your present struggles • How to learn your partner’s thorns and find how your thorns may complement or exacerbate each other’s pain • How to undo these stories of unworthiness, and how to reclaim our birthright of love and forgiveness. • How our thorns often give us the greatest possible opportunity for growth and meaning here on this earth Most importantly, says Dr. Berman, we don’t have to be ashamed of our thorns or wish them away. In fact, our thorns are often the places where we can find the most light and purpose, provided we are willing to excavate those wounds and do the soul-work needed to heal these hurts. “Healing from these thorny stories will not be simple,” says Dr. Laura Berman. “It is often the work of a lifetime. But, here’s the amazing thing: Our thorns can often end up being our secret superpower.”
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down for an intimate talk with Justin Baldoni, best known for his role as Rafael Solano on “Jane the Virgin.” Baldoni is also a director (“Five Feet Apart” and “Clouds”) and a podcaster (listen to “The Man Enough” podcast here). Solano is also the author of “Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity,” an engaging and daring exploration into what it means to be a ‘man’ in today’s society, and how we are failing boys and men in many ways. On this episode, you will learn: • Why the term ‘toxic masculinity’ can be harmful • How the definition of manhood has shifted in the last few decades, leaving many men struggling to find role models or clear examples of the kind of man they want to be • How dangerous gender roles can be when it comes to young boys who are encouraged to never cry or ask for help • How we can create gender equality without demonizing men or masculinity • How you can find your own definition for masculinity • Why women seem to be attracted to a certain type of masculinity, and how we can reconfigure our desires so that we don’t always go for the ‘bad boys’ Check out Justin Baldoni’s Man Enough book here, and keep an eye out for his new guide for middle-schoolers which will be published soon!
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about how Covid has changed the way we date and the way we connect the people around us. Now that Covid sanctions are lifting in many places and we are almost entering a ‘post-pandemic’ lifestyle, Dr. Berman has great advice for anyone looking to heal and to find love after a long, lonely 2 years of isolation. On this episode you will learn: • How the pandemic has changed us on a deep level, even if we are not fully aware of it • How the hidden blessing of the pandemic was that it led people to find what wasn’t working in their life (whether it was their job, their marriage, etc.) and led them to branch out in new and exciting ways • How many people are dealing with emotional and physical changes related to the pandemic, and how we can lean into that discomfort and learn from our experiences • How the pandemic also led many of us to fear human touch and companionship, leaving many people “touch-starved” and longing for cuddling and affection • How you date again in a post-Covid world without forgetting all the important lessons you learned during the pandemic Listen now for Dr. Berman’s timely advice about love in the time of Covid.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with psychologist and bestselling author Tara Brach. Brach is an incredible thought-leader in the field of radical self-acceptance, emotional healing, and Buddhist mediation. During their special talk, Brach explains to listeners how you can deepen your practice of self-love and self-acceptance so that you aren’t just working around the edges of unconditional love and surrender, but that you are living and nurturing that state of mind on a moment-by-moment basis. After you have listened to this episode, you will know how to: • Embark on a journey of self-love that goes so much deeper than our culture’s current understanding of self-care and self-esteem • Begin a meditation practice that will be accessible, enjoyable, and a natural part of your daily life • Identify unhealthy thought patterns that undermine your ability to wholly love yourself and accept your whole being • Heal and release toxic family programming that is keeping you from accessing your real power If you liked this episode, you can check out Tara Brach’s books Radical Self-Acceptance, Radical Compassion, and Trusting the Gold: Uncovering Your Natural Goodness to help you as you continue your journey of loving and healing yourself.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about triggers. You’ve probably heard the words “triggered” or “trigger warning” a lot in recent years. And, for good reason: As a nation we are becoming more aware of mental health battles and the importance of being compassionate and supportive when it comes to people’s ‘triggers,’ i.e. those hidden trauma wounds that can be opened up by certain conversations or experiences. It’s time for Part 2 of Dr. Berman’s intimate chat with television superstar Nick Cannon. On Part 1 of this special interview, Dr. Berman and Nick talked about everything from monogamy to sex toys to how Nick’s fear of germs keeps him going back to his baby mamas instead of finding new partners. But, on this second installment, Nick and Dr. Berman tackle something much deeper and darker: The loss of Nick’s infant son, Zen, and how he is coping with that grief. Zen died of a brain tumor in December 2021 when he was just five months old. Since then, Nick has grappled with every parent’s worst nightmare: Losing a child. It’s a nightmare Dr. Berman knows well, as she also lost her son in 2021. On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with television personality Nick Cannon. As you may know, Dr. Berman has appeared on “The Nick Cannon Show” multiple times, both to help him recover from the grief of losing his infant son, as well as to help him explore the idea of temporary celibacy. Nick’s love life has been very complicated as he has multiple on-and-off relationships with the mothers of his children, and he comes to Dr. Berman seeking some clarity and direction around his romantic future. Nick has fathered 7 kids with four different women, and now he is expecting his 8th child with former Wild ‘N Out colleague Bre Tiesi. While many have been critical of Nick’s decisions, he has made the intentional choice to be more conscious about his love life and the choices he makes when it comes to sex. There’s just one problem: Due to his fears about STIs and unsafe sex, he prefers to be intimate with the women he knows and trusts (the mothers of his children), but this inevitably leads to jealousy and anger. “I just don’t feel like monogamy is healthy,” Nick confesses. “I feel like that gets into the states of selfishness and ownership.” Nick says that in all of his relationships, he expects that the woman will eventually get tired of his ‘sh*#” and leave him, which Dr. Berman encourages him to explore. Could it be that his fear of being left or discarded is contributing to his fear of monogamy and true, lasting commitment? “I am the guy that your mom warned you about,” he admits. “I am a better friend and companion, then I am boyfriend, relationship, husband, all of those things.” In the end, Nick says his ultimate goal is to the best father he can be, and to continue maturing and learning on his journey though love and life.

"On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about Birth PTSD. This is a rarely discussed topic that impacts men and women alike. “Going through labor and delivery is a massive experience that can take a physical, emotional, and spiritual toll,” says Dr. Berman. “Even if you had a ‘normal’ birth (using the word normal loosely, as all births are different and special in their own way), you might find that you are having a hard time getting back into sex. Once the doctor gives you the green light to have sex again, you might find that one or both of you are having a hard time getting back to your old sex life.” That’s because, says Dr. Berman, your sex life likely won’t ever be exactly the same…and that’s okay. “Sex after childbirth is different, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing at all. On the contrary, many parents can find that their sex lives will deepen and improve over the years, but often times there is also a period of adjustment where one or both of you may struggle to get back into the saddle,” says Dr. Berman. “Men are often nervous or even frightened to have sex with their partners after they have given birth, especially if they witnessed their partner giving birth. They may be afraid of hurting their partner, and they may even fear that they won’t be able to satisfy her.” Dr. Berman also says that new moms often struggle with feelings of discomfort or shame around their bodies after childbirth, especially if they had a difficult labor. “If you didn’t feel respected or safe during labor, or you felt as though you ‘failed’ in some way to deliver in the manner in which you hoped, you might no longer trust your body as you once did,” says Dr. Berman. “You might have feelings of resentment or anger about the way your birth was handled and you might be afraid to feel vulnerable or exposed after that experience.” Dr. Berman talks about therapy can help to heal trauma and what couples should do if they are struggling from birth PTSD. "
On this very special episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with her friend and yoga expert, Paul Denniston. Author of the groundbreaking book “Healing through Yoga,” Denniston has personally helped Dr. Berman through the grief of her son’s death and showed her ways that yoga can help us to channel, heal, and process our deepest wounds. Denniston is the founder of Grief Yoga and has built his practice around the five fundamental keys of healing: Awareness, Expression, Connection, Surrender, and Evolution. With each of these stages, yoga positions and meditations can help you to further your spiritual practice and unblock energy channels so that you can live your most fulfilling, love-filled existence. In this episode, Denniston and Dr. Berman also talk about how anger can actually be one of our greatest teachers, and how tapping into our anger in a healthy way can help to free us from unwanted experiences and negative thought patterns. While we often run away from anger or try to deny its existence, Denniston and Dr. Berman both share how the expression of anger can be revolutionary for both personal and collective healing. “We all need to share our stories. Being heard is one of the most fundamental needs of human beings,” says Dr. Berman. “And that includes anger. Grief can bring up so much anger, and I have times where I just need to beat a cushion with a bat, or scream into a pillow, and paint angrily until I can move that emotion through me. We need to honor our anger and give it freedom to move and be expressed.” In his book, Denniston shares over 75 meditations and yoga positions that can help even beginner yogis tap into the connection between the body and the spirit. With yoga, we can train our bodies to be more resilient, more present, and more able to withstand the ebbs and flows of life.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman talks about the trouble with mismatched libidos and why so many couples struggle to establish complementary sex drives. “One of the most common issues my clients have is that one partner wants more sex than the other,” says Dr. Berman. “Generally, this is an issue that presents early on in a relationship, but over time the issue grows and grows…as does the resentment.” Dr. Berman explains that mismatched libidos can often trigger a vicious cycle, a cycle which couples may not even be aware of or realizing that they are perpetuating. “Here is what often happens: The partner who keeps getting turned down for sex becomes resentful and insecure. They start to pull away, sometimes intentionally, sometimes unconsciously. The pet names and romance and affection start to disappear. As these things fall by the wayside, the sex drive only continues to plummet and both partners grow apart bit by bit. This is why mismatched libidos can end up derailing your entire marriage, if the issue is left untreated.” So what can couples do? In this episode, Dr. Berman explains how you can naturally increase your libido, such as by doing something dangerous together. “If you go on a roller coaster, or go skydiving, or even just watch a scary movie together, it can increase adrenaline and dopamine which will mimic that excitement you first felt for each other when you began dating,” says Dr. Berman. Dr. Berman also discusses how couples can start to find moments for spontaneity and create more eroticism and novelty in the bedroom. “You can have the sex life of your dreams,” says Dr. Berman. “But you’re the one responsible for making that happen. It won’t just occur overnight, and you have to be willing to get of your comfort zone and really challenge yourself to take ownership of your sexuality.”
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with intuitive consultant, life coach, and mindfulness-based psychotherapist Maureen Riley. Dr. Berman has been a longtime client of Maureen Riley, and she reveals that Riley’s wisdom and intuition has helped her deeply. Riley is committed to teaching people how to unlock their own potential and get out of their own way. If you’re starting 2022 with a list of daring resolutions and hopes for the New Year, this is a must-listen episode that will teach you what you need to know in order to make your resolutions a reality. “Imagine being able track back to the hidden source of what’s blocking you while you simultaneously access the power within that unlocks, opens and shifts you into a new reality- one that’s aligned with your Wholeness, well Being, and Source of inner guidance,” Riley states. “Once activated, this energy and intelligence can repair your health, put your life into alignment with your true purpose and then, by sacred law, activates your personal stream of abundance. Imagine having what it REALLY takes to re-ignite and flourish, trusting yourself and life again.” On this episode, Riley explains what manifesting really is, and challenges some of the misconceptions people may have about manifesting and how to apply it your own life.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about what men and women really want in the bedroom. Do men and women really have such vastly different needs and desires in the bedroom? Is it true that men have much higher libidos than women, or that women can’t have sex without getting emotionally attached? Dr. Berman gets real about these intimacy questions and more, first explaining what truly makes a person desirable in the bedroom. And believe it or not, it has nothing to do with how big your breasts are or how long you can last during sex. “Think back to the best sex you’ve ever had,” says Dr. Berman. “The sex that made you feel the most turned on, desired, and powerfully connected to your partner. What made that sex so amazing? It probably had nothing to do with your partner’s penis size or whether or not they had a 6-pack or double D cups. It was probably about the emotional connection and the excitement you felt at being seen and loved and treasured for exactly who you are, and being able to give that same unconditional love back to your partner in return.” So knowing that passionate sex is more than skin deep, how can you apply this wisdom to your sex life right now to make yourself an even better sex partner? “Don’t assume that your partner wants what you want,” says Dr. Berman. “Be willing to stay open and curious about what things might make your partner feel desired and turned on. Ask questions. Pay attention. Don’t make it all about your assumptions or what your past partners might have liked. And, even if you have been with your partner for a long time, their tastes or desires might have changed. Sex needs to be ongoing conversation we are having if we want to ensure that both partners are getting their needs met.” Listen to this episode to learn more about how you can become a better partner in the bedroom.
On this very special episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with Susan Grau. Have you ever wondered it means to be a medium, or have you ever felt as though you have a ‘sixth sense’ or an ability to see or feel people who are no longer here? Then this episode is for you: Susan Grau is an Internationally recognized Intuitive Medium, Life Path Intuitive, Life Coach, & Hypnotherapist / Past Life Regressionist. Never forget where you came from. Never allow anyone to make you feel less than what you are. Always know your value. You are from the light,” says Susan. On this episode, Dr. Berman talks with Susan about the near-death experience she had when she was 4 years old. Susan says she didn’t see bright lights or the traditional light at the end of the tunnel, but she had an incredible experience in the afterlife that she shares with Dr. Berman in this thrilling episode. Dr. Berman also shares how she has been able to connect with her son Sammy and her mother after their deaths, and how she uses her deep pain as a gateway to creating these incredible channels of connection. If you have ever wondered about the afterlife or how to cope with grief or the loss of your loved ones, this is an episode that will bring you enlightenment and comfort.
On this episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about the most common mistakes that people make in the bedroom. How can you create passion and meaningful sexual intimacy even when you have been together for years? How can you make sex special on a regular weeknight when the kids are down the hall and there are still dirty dishes in the sink? From understanding the different ways that men and women approach sexual pleasure to getting in touch with what you really want in the bedroom, Dr. Berman explains that the most fulfilling and passionate sex is often born out of self-knowledge and a willing to go beyond the surface. “When we think of exciting sexual encounters or passionate hookups, we tend to imagine a very Hollywood image of what that kind of sex looks like. We picture a couple stumbling home from their date night or a night out at the bar, pulling each other’s clothes off as they trip down the hallway and then land in bed together. The sex feels very spontaneous and unplanned,” says Dr. Berman. “But what I have found throughout my years as a sex therapist is that the best sex really happens when couples consciously do the work necessary to make uninhibited, whole-hearted sex possible. It’s not about a drunken hookup where you’re struggling to pull off each other’s close as fast as possible. It’s about slowing down, feeling what’s really happening inside, and knowing that you are safe enough and loved enough to show your whole self.” Dr. Berman explains that this type of sex is also so special because it requires no preparation or extra window dressing. “You don’t need the lingerie or the date nights or the candles,” says Dr. Berman. “Those things are wonderful and special, but if you’re having conscious, whole-hearted, enlightened sex, or some form of conscious physical connection (even if it’s just for 10 minutes), that means more than a whole night of bells and whistles without any emotional depth or real intimacy.”
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down for an intimate conversation with husband Neal Allen. Neal Allen is a coach and writer who studies and practices traditional and contemporary spiritual paths. His book “Shapes of Truth: Discover God Inside You,” is one of Dr. Berman’s favorite new books and she is eager to share how you can apply the deep wisdom within this book to your life. Neal Allen will help listeners discover how to find the divinity within, including what divinity means and how even a non-believer can connect with a deeper meaning and purpose. Allen explains how his time at the Hameed Ali's Diamond Heart group helped to awake him to the false stories about himself and his reality that he had been stuck in, and how he was able to ‘burn down his house’ discover how to see the many colors of divinity within them. “There are 35 colors that you can find within yourself,” says Allen. “And each of them has to do a way in which you are divine.” Allen explains what these colors mean and how you can learn to find your colors in yourself and in others. During the episode, Dr. Berman also gets a chance to speak with Neal Allen’s wife Anne Lamott. Anne Lamott is the New York Times bestselling author of “Bird by Bird,” “Help, Thanks, Wow,” and “Stiches.” She is also a public speaker and writing teacher, and one of Dr. Berman’s favorite writers. Lamott talks to Dr. Berman about dating when you’re middle-aged, and how one should approach the process of looking for love. How do you know when he’s “the one” or when he just ticks most of your boxes? “Hold out for the person you would want to be best friends with, even if they aren’t going to your romantic partner,” says Lamott. You can find Neal Allen’s “Shapes of Truth: Finding the Divinity Within” on Amazon.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman discusses one of the most common issues she sees in her sex therapy practice: Mismatched libidos. “Whenever one partner has more desire than the other partner, you’re looking at a powder keg,” says Dr. Berman. “It may not seem so at first. But as one partner keeps saying ‘no’ and the other partner keeps dealing with that rejection, over time it can really become an explosive situation.” Dr. Berman says one of the main reasons mismatched libido can lead to divorce is because lack of sex often leads to lack of physical intimacy and then lack of emotional intimacy as well. “When sex falls by the wayside, what often happens is that cuddling, kissing, hand-holding, and snuggling often go away too,” says Dr. Berman. “A woman may reject being cuddled or getting massaged because she fears it is going to lead to sex, and if she’s not in the mood, she may just want to shut down any physical intimacy altogether.” Dr. Berman says that when cuddling and physical touch disappear, then romance tends to follow suit. “Then, the pet names disappear and the little signs of affection, like bringing home flowers or going on date nights or making her a special dinner just to surprise her,” says Dr. Berman. “His needs are getting met in the bedroom so he can’t meet her needs outside the bedroom. It becomes a vicious circle.” Dr. Berman says it’s not just women who suffer from low libido, but men as well. “When men have low desire, it presents differently from women,” says the sex therapist. “Oftentimes, stress or shame or fear of performance issues can lead a man to avoid sex. If he is struggling with erectile dysfunction, he may try to avoid sex because it is humiliating for him. Or if he is out of work or not able to provide for his family, I find that this kind of stress also leads men to shut down in the bedroom. When men feel stressed or emasculated, they often cope by turning to porn and masturbation instead of wanting to connect with their actual partner in the bedroom.” So what can couples do to address mismatched libidos and ensure that both sex and romance stay alive in their relationship? Listen to this very important episode of “The Language of Love” to find out!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman continues her conversation with the transformative author and energy guide, Lee Harris. (See the previous episode for Part One of her interview with Harris). In this episode, Dr. Berman and Harris talk about how you can heal from a breakup and find self-care. What does self-care really mean? Is it about splurging on a massage or taking a hot bath with expensive bath bombs? Or is there more to self-care than meets the eye? Harris and Dr. Berman look beyond the commodification of self-care and our current understanding of how self-care often means external things (like shopping or going on vacation), and how self-care can actually be much deeper than that. Harris suggests spending 10 minutes a day with yourself, and how this simple, easily applied practice can totally overhaul you whole day and our whole mood. The truest form of self-care is about being with yourself, honoring yourself with your whole awareness and consciousness. And then without judgment or condemnation or allowing anyone else’s needs or desires overtake you, you sit for that 10 minutes and honor what is happening right now inside of you. It’s a small but powerfully significant way to change your life. “If you are trying to recover from something or replenish yourself, place a hand on your heart and say to yourself, “I give myself my own love.” It is a powerful statement. I give myself my own love. Some of you will feel it going through the hand back into the heart recycling what it is you send out. A lot of love escapes your body from this point, so send it back in. The heart is a magnet when it is full,” writes Harris. Later in the episode, Harris and Dr. Berman talk about how our challenges and setbacks actually hide our most important invitations from the universe, and how our darkest times can offer us the chance for finding the true light within.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with energy expert and transformation guide Lee Harris. Harris is the author of “Energy Speaks: Messages from Spirit on Living, Loving, and Awakening,” and on today’s episode, he talks about how we can get in tune with our energy and help use our consciousness not only to heal ourselves but to heal the world. Harris explains to Dr. Berman how we can better raise boys and help them to get in touch with their emotions. Since our society encourages men to be stoic and never cry or show weakness, many boys grow up being unable to cope with or even identify their emotions. On this episode, Harris shares his important insights on raising emotionally healthy boys, but also emotionally healthy kids in general. How can you better tap into your child’s emotions? How can you parent in a conscious, vulnerable way? These questions are so complex, but the answers are already within us, if we can just let our egos and expectations get out of the way our intuition and our inner wisdom. When we connect to the source of unconditional love and our true power, we can parent in a way that allows our children to break free from painful family patterns, even those that may have existed in our family legacy for generations. “The heartbreak of this planet is healing. It may not seem so, but it is. Heartbreak is healing on a planetary level. That is why hearts are breaking. So, lead with your hearts both for yourself and for others,” says Harris. “Where you share your love with others, you lead with your hearts. None of you acknowledge yourselves enough for this. And where you lead with your hearts, you the lead the way for others to open their hearts.” Don’t miss this insightful episode!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about what men really want in the bedroom, and why men seem to have higher desire than women when it comes to intimacy. Dr. Berman reveals that the most common issue that she sees in her clients is the fact that men want more sex than their partners, and how those mismatched libidos can wreak havoc on your relationship. When sex falls by the wayside, it can lead to less affection, less physical touch, and less romance in general. When a woman doesn’t want sex, she may brush off her partner if he tries to cuddle her or kiss her, because she thinks “Oh no, he is just going to want sex, and I don’t even want to go there right now.” Or maybe she even feels guilty accepting affectionate touch since she isn’t ‘keeping up her end of the bargain’ and being the passionate, hands-on partner that she knows her partner wants her to be. Yet the more these things disappear (the cuddling, the hand-holding, the pet names, the snuggling under the sheets) in a relationship, the more her desire will continue to plummet as well because she needs these forms of affection to help fuel her libido. So, it becomes a vicious cycle in which less sex means less romance, and less romance means less sex, and in the end, both partners end up feeling very isolated and disconnected. Dr. Berman’s advice for couples is simple: Start by being honest about the fact that you each have different levels of desire, but make room for the possibility that this can change in the future. Every sex life has ebbs and flows, so even if you are not currently where you want to be in the bedroom, make room for the possibility that this can change and that you and your partner have the power to create the passion, fulfilling sex lives you both desire and deserve. Listen to today’s episode of “The Language of Love” to hear Dr. Berman’s best sex tips for couples struggling with mismatched libidos.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with Janne Robinson, a feminist beat poet, speaker, and visionary. The two women talk about life, love, trauma, open-heartedness, and finding ‘the one.’ How do you know when you have found your forever soulmate? And how do you know when you have found someone who is just here temporarily to help you deepen your journey and continue your soul-work? They also delve into the idea of “you spot it, you got it” and how you can claim those parts of yourselves that might scare you or even trigger. How can you claim your ‘wild’ and embrace your shadow-self? Robinson explains that most of us constantly live in a state of conformity, always trying to blend in and achieve concrete milestones in order to prove our worth. Robinson also talks about the feelings of jealousy and inferiority that can plague us when we don’t feel as ‘enlightened’ or as ‘free’ as other people around us who are living consciously and seemingly fearlessly. She explains that the best way to get over that envy is to actually spend time with those we admire and wish to emulate, because it will help to draw out that energy and what we wish to create in our own lives. They also talk about body wisdom and how you can tap into your body’s innate needs and desires. How can movement and physical activity help us unlock our self-worth and intuition? How can you ‘be in the body’ even when you are dealing with deep grief and trauma, and are frightened to face those feelings buried within you. “If we must have milestones—mine will be measured by how much joy I have collected at the end of each day and how often in this life I have truly, deeply, opened,” writes Robinson. “Seek, see, love, do.”
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about self-love and how self-love can help to heal the world. She tackles the difference between self-esteem and self-worth, explaining that self-esteem is conditional. Self-esteem is often based on other people’s perceptions of us and that external validation, such as whether you can perform well enough or achieve enough in the world’s eyes. Only then can you have pride in your accomplishments and feel confident in yourself. But, as the sex therapist explains, self-worth is completely different. It is totally unconditional love that you never have to compete for or earn. “Self-worth is ultimately, at its core, the understanding that you are worthy of abundant love, simply because you exist. You don’t have to do anything or be anything, you’re actually perfectly imperfect exactly as you are and perfectly lovable exactly as you are. You are the unique, one-of-a-kind expression of spirit,” says Dr. Berman. So how can you begin to establish self-love? What are some ways you can create a self-love practice that will help you to elevate your energy and receive the abundance you deserve? And, for parents, how can you create a household in which self-love radiates throughout the family and your children feel loved and celebrated by you simply for existing? Dr. Berman also talks to a caller who wants to know how she can support her adult child who is going through a difficult time. How can parents of adult children help to model self-love and encourage their children to make smart decisions without being a helicopter parent? A caller also asks Dr. Berman about how to overcome childhood abuse and self-destructive coping mechanisms that are interfering with his ability to establish healthy self-love in the present and create positive relationships. How can you build self-love when your childhood was traumatic? Listen to Dr. Berman’s advice on self-love and how to create it on her this newest episode “The Language of Love.”
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with internationally acclaimed author and lecturer Marianne Williamson. Dr. Berman’s grief journey following the death of her son Sammy has been greatly illuminated and shaped by Williamson’s past works, such as “A Return to Love” and “Tears to Triumph,” so sitting down for an interview with such a beloved soul-guide has been a longtime plan of hers. In today’s interview, Dr. Berman and Williamson talk about this incredibly difficult time that we are living in, and how crucial it is for us to stay present and engaged, rather than hiding our heads in the sand. How can you find your voice and help to promote peace and integrity when you just want to hide away from the ugliness of the world? Williamson says we must start acknowledging our own power and refusing to be silenced. In particular, Williamson believes that empaths and spiritually-minded people have a huge responsibility right now in helping to heal the world. She urges listeners to find a way to overcome the ‘overwhelm’ and tap into their amazing powers, because sitting by idly will only lead to further spiritual and physical destruction of our country and climate. “The effects of love are maximal,” says Williamson. “We [need to] stop disengaging from the political system.” Dr. Berman and Williamson also talk about ‘The Course in Miracles,” which Dr. Berman is working through and which Williamson narrates for the audiobook. On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about her newfound hobby, Ecstatic Dancing. This unique form of dance is often misunderstood, and many people may not even know about this amazing, transformative form of body movement. So, together with Robin Parrish (Co-Founder and Managing Director of Ecstatic Dance LA), Dr. Berman discusses what ecstatic dancing is really all about, as well as how she has been using ecstatic dancing to cope as she moves through her grief journey after her son’s death. Ecstatic dancing isn’t about learning choreography or having the best rhythm: It’s about leaning into the changing waves of our lives, and learning how to dance and move with these ups and downs. Ecstatic dancing is all about listening to the wisdom of your body, and moving through any fears or doubts as you embrace the music within you. Ecstatic dancing has been said to lead to feelings of ecstasy or pure joy, and whether you do it alone in your backyard or with a group of friends or fellow dancers, you may find that this dance feels meditative, rejuvenating, or that it promotes feelings of serenity. In fact, ecstatic dancing has its roots in religious rituals that reach back thousands of years into human history. Listen to today’s episode to hear about the benefits and history of ecstatic dance, and how you can start grooving like Dr. Berman. Click here to learn more about Robin Parrish and Ecstatic Dance LA.

In today’s “Losing Sammy, part 3,” Dr. Berman reveals what her life has been like since the loss of her son, how she laid him to rest, how grief has impacted her marriage, and how her and her husband’s differing views on the after-life have sometimes left them struggling to understand each other’s motivations. On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about the history of sex aids, from primitive sex toys to the invention of the first vibrator. From G-spot stimulators to dilators to penis rings, there are so many sex aids which you can use to improve your connection with yourself and your partner(s). As Dr. Berman explains, the sex aid industry has really changed in the last 2 decades: Now sex aids are female-friendly and easily found online or in cozy boutiques, rather than in scary dimly-lit rooms at truck stops. So how can you find out which sex aid is right for you? Which sex is best for single folks or for use during intercourse? Dr. Berman gives her top tips to help you shop smart when you enter the world of sex aids. Then, she talks about how you can introduce sex aids into their relationship. What should you do if your suggestion of using a sex aid offends your partner or makes them jealous? It’s not uncommon for men to feel insecure when women want to bring vibrators or sex toys into their relationship, so how can you suggest sex aids without making your man feel like he is being replaced? Dr. Berman also challenges common sex toy myths, like the idea that you can get addicted to your vibrator or that vibrators are dangerous to your genitals or sexual response.

On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about Bennifer and whether or not it’s ever a good idea to get back together with an ex. Getting back together with an ex is extremely tempting, and for some, the urge can even feel downright addictive. If you’re going to get back together with an ex, you have to really make sure that you’re doing so in a conscious, intentional way. You need to be willing to examine what you did to contribute to the breakup in the first place, and what steps you both need to take to ensure that you don’t make the same mistakes this go-around. Next, Dr. Berman talks to couples who have been stuck at home together for a year and a half due to Covid. After so much togetherness during the pandemic, how can you and your partner start to bring more magic and passion back into your relationship? If you are feeling more like roommates and less like lovers, don’t despair: There are ways you can reignite the flame after this difficult year. Then, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who recently broke up with her longtime partner. He says he still loves her and misses her, but he claims he needs time to ‘find himself’ and have time alone. How can you move on from a ex-partner who still isn’t fully letting you go? When do you determine that the relationship is completely unsalvageable and quit taking your ex’s calls?
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about ‘sexual healing,’ and what that term means to her. How can you use sexual intercourse to elevate your energetic consciousness and use sexual pleasure as a tool to help you heal your life? Then, Dr. Berman talks about another kind of sexual healing: Healing physical issues in the bedroom which prevent people from enjoying intimacy. From lack of desire to erection issues to painful sex to an inability to reach orgasm, there are many common sexual complaints that can complicate your experience in the bedroom. However, there are also many tools that can help you overcome these issues and create the sex life you desire. Dr. Berman also addresses how you can heal from past sexual trauma. In many cases, people with a history of sexual abuse may struggle to feel safe in the bedroom and avoid sex altogether, or they might use sex in a self-destructive way and have unsafe sex or make promiscuous choices even if they really aren’t wanting to do so. As Dr. Berman explains, being ‘sex positive’ doesn’t have to mean that you have to be ready to have threesomes or be ready to swing from the chandeliers: You can still be conservative about your fantasies or desires, but you are nonjudgmental and realize that sex is an important and healthy part of being human. And, if you are single, how can you initiate sexual healing when you don’t currently have a partner? Dr. Berman talks about how you can use self-stimulation as a tool for healing.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about the most common challenges that couples report. She reveals that the top complaint that partners have is uneven desire when one partner has a higher libido than the other, and how that can lead to trouble throughout their relationship. She says one issue is that even though many women struggle with some form of sexual dysfunction, whether that is lack of desire, difficulty reaching orgasm, or pain during intercourse, the medical community has only just begun to put attention into addressing female sexual pleasure. Hence, while men can turn to options like Viagra or Cialis, women are left with few, if any options, for improved sexual response, and most are too ashamed to even raise the issue with their doctor. So, what should women with low desire do? First, Dr. Berman says women need to go to their doctor for a hormone panel as well as to investigate whether any medications they are on may cause sexual side effects (popular prescriptions like anti-depressants and hormonal contraceptives can have downsides in the bedroom). After investigating possible physical causes and troubleshooting possible solutions, Dr. Berman says she would also want to delve into a woman’s past and look at issues like body image, past sexual trauma, sexual shame related to religious or cultural upbringing. Our bodies can carry cellular trauma which can be passed on genetically and Dr. Berman explains that unless we get in touch with our physical selves and where we might be carrying tension or dis-ease, we won’t be able to fully release, whether we are in or out of the bedroom. Hear her reveal how she uses somatic therapy to tap into her physical body and how you can start ‘being in body’ right now.
On today’s episode of the “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with guest Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. The world-renowned Toltec spiritual teacher and New York Times best-selling author of books like “The Five Levels of Attachment” recently hosted a shaman retreat which Dr. Berman attended, and on this new episode, they sit down to reconnect and reflect on love, healing, and living wholeheartedly and consciously even during this difficult time. Don Miguel Jr. (son of Don Miguel Ruiz, author of "The Four Agreements) recently wrote a groundbreaking book titled “The Seven Secrets to Healthy Happy Relationships,” and as he explains to Dr. Berman, the foundation of all of these secrets is unconditional love. “The difference between conditional and unconditional love, to me, is that conditional love only sees what it wants to see, and unconditional love is willing us to see life as it is, it is willing us to see the whole,” says Don Miguel. Don Miguel and Dr. Berman then delve into communication and the common issues that arise between couples, such as fights about money, parenting, sex, and other stressors. How can one apply the wisdom of unconditional love to rise above these arguments and instead approach their relationship in a more wholehearted and enlightened way? How can unconditional love be applied to these situations in a real, applicable way that couples can use in their daily lives? Don Miguel shares his wisdom and his tips for couples who are seeking to build a healthier and happier marriage, and how people can ‘defuse their triggers’ and learn to separate these arguments from their love for one another and the security of their relationship as a whole. Listen to his life-changing advice now!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about how communication is a muscle that couples have to learn to exercise throughout their relationship. She explains that many of us operate under the assumption that our partners can read our minds and hear our inner monologue, thereby understanding our motivations and our needs as we move throughout the day. But, she warns, our partners often understand our inner lives much less than we actually imagine, which leads to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and unnecessary arguments. Then, Dr. Berman talks about the difference between the way men and women communicate, and how this can lead to issues between male partners and female partners. Dr. Berman explains that when men communicate, they often have a competitive stance, looking for subtle or not-so-subtle ways to ‘one-up’ each other or be the alpha dog in the room. On the other hand, when women communicate, they generally seek out opportunities for connection rather than competition. Hence, they are not aware of the fact that when they talk to their male partner about a household issue such as forgetting to empty the dishwasher, he is already primed and prepared to be in that defensive stance due to male communication patterns. Hence, even the criticism can feel like an attack on his very character or even his worth, which is why a simple complaint about dishes can blow up into a massive argument. Next, Dr. Berman talks about how communication in the bedroom is positively crucial, especially when it comes to women speaking up about what turns them on and what they need from their partners when it comes to sex.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about sexual shame and why so many people are uncomfortable talking about sex. Why is something so natural and so fundamental to the human species so taboo in our culture? And how can we start to break down those barriers and normalize human sexuality? Next, Dr. Berman talks about how aging can impact our bodies and our sexual response. Although there is no such thing as a ‘sexpiration date,’ and older people can desire and benefit from sexual intimacy even in their golden years, the truth is that as we age, our sexual response can become complicated. Your genitals will change in appearance as you age, but this doesn’t have to be a source of shame or low self-worth. Many women may be tempted by the idea of ‘vaginal rejuvenation,’ especially as they age and notice changes to their labia, but these operations come with lots of potential downsides. Not only are these vaginal rejuvenation surgeries totally unnecessary, but Dr. Berman says they can actually harm the nerve-rich tissue in your labia and actually detract from your sexual pleasure in the future as well as cause physical pain and dryness. The bottom line is that genitals come in all different sizes and shapes, and it’s time we start empowering women to love and cherish their vulvas rather than judge or critique them. “What’s most attractive to men is that sense of confidence and comfort that a woman has in her own body and her sexuality,” Dr. Berman says. “They are not analyzing the length of your labia or how they’re sticking out or not sticking out.”
On this episode of "The Language of Love," Dr. Laura Berman talks about the meaning of Quantum Love and how to implement Quantum Love principles in your own life, both inside and outside the bedroom. Scientific discoveries over the past 25-50 years have established that at our core, we are all pure energy. Our bodies have an energetic frequency that is always shifting and changing as a result of our thoughts and feeling states. That energy doesn’t stay within our bodies, but emanates out, impacting everyone around us, most especially our romantic partners. Dr. Berman says that couples are like human tuning forks, constantly matching one another’s frequency. You and your mate are constantly entraining your energy to one another. Most of this happens outside conscious awareness, but not when you are practicing Quantum Love. In this episode, Dr. Berman teaches you how to consciously take charge of your body’s energetic frequency so that your partner matches to you; your wants, your desires, and the love you want to experience. You have everything you need to create the love life you desire right here, right now. After you listen to this episode, go to Dr. Berman's website to find her Guided Quantum Love Meditations that will help you get grounded and open your heart so you can create the love you deeply desire and deserve. The genderqueer, genderfluid nonbinary author was dubbed "the internet's most beloved anti-bully," and on this episode, Marsh lives up to their reputation as one of the most inspiring and educational voices in the LGBTQ+ community. Marsh is a visionary who coaches people to learn to love and accept themselves, especially the parts of themselves that might feel wrong or flawed, or unlovable. Dr. Berman sits down with Marsh to discuss everything from gender identity to pronouns to what it really means to live a fully authentic life. Marsh explains how they are able to live so bravely even in a world that can sometimes feel so filled with hate. As Marsh discusses their traumatic experiences with bullying as a child, Dr. Berman digs into the topic of childhood bullying from her perspective as a mom who struggled with watching her own kids being bullied.
Dr. Berman asks Marsh how parents can better support their children when they're enduring bullying, as her own efforts to intervene were often not successful. When school can feel like a warzone, it can lead kids to make tragic choices that can have devastating consequences. Marsh explains what they think parents should do to protect their kids and also how to teach kids to stand in their own power even as they're being judged and mocked for their differences.

On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about the very real danger that comes from ‘dead bedrooms.’ As she explains, the longer you go without sex, the more difficult it is to reawaken that desire and save that sexual connection. From physical concerns like the decline of sexual response and atrophy in the genital region to the emotional valley that can grow between couples when sex falls by the wayside, Dr. Berman explains why it’s so important to get the flames going in the bedroom, because once that fire is doused, it becomes that much harder to reignite once again.Next, Dr. Berman talks about how older women can grow into their sexual prowess as they age. She explains that while older men can be seen as ‘debonair’ or getting better with age, older women tend to be seen as unattractive or simply not seen at all. She explains why this myth is simply false and why sex can be enjoyable and life-affirming for baby boomers and beyond, and how to deal with common issues like vaginal dryness and body image issues as they arise. She explains how older women can lean into their wisdom and embrace life and sexuality both during and after menopause. “I’m really interested in helping women understand what a powerful, innervating, freeing and exciting time this can be,” she says about life after menopause. If you have a question for Dr. Berman you can send a voice message to her on Speakpipe or send an email to languageoflovepod@gmail.com. She might answer your question on the next podcast!
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about demisexuality. This term is used to describe someone who only feels an attraction to someone after they have built an emotional connection with them. In other words, they generally don’t feel attraction to celebrities or attractive people they see walking down the street: First, they need to get to know a person before desire develops. In a similar vein, Dr. Berman discusses arranged marriages and whether it is possible to create a sexual connection with someone you only meet on your wedding day. What happens if the person standing at the altar isn’t physically attracted to you, or vice versa? Is there a way you can build desire and attraction if the feelings aren’t there, or if they have diminished over time? Additionally, how can you build an emotional connection when someone when you feel completely distanced from your partner?Next, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who discusses how the lockdown has changed her dating behavior. How was love changed post-pandemic? Dr. Berman acknowledges how being in quarantine has led to us feeling awkward and a bit uncomfortable with eye contact. Moving out from behind our screens and back into the real world can feel very daunting, and lead to feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty. How can we ease back into social activities and find our groove again, after so many months of being shut up at home with Zoom as our main social contact?
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman talks about the experience that catapulted her into a spiritual transformation, and ultimately led her to write her book “Quantum Love.” Dr. Berman discusses how the science of energy and the way energy moves in the body led her to deepen her practice as a sex therapist and focus her practice on ‘sex, body, and soul.’Then, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who wants to know whether long-distance relationships are worth entertaining when the person lives thousands and thousands of miles away. How can you build an energetic connection with someone when they live many time zones away? She also talks with a man who has a history of long-distance relationships who says he struggles with giving himself self-care during his alone time, and finding a way to acknowledge his own worth and sexuality after being solo in the Covid shutdown for so long. Dr. Berman talks with a woman who says she struggles with ‘masculine energy,’ and feeling like she is too aggressive or domineering with her partners. She feels like she takes on a position of power in her relationship in which she’s always deciding where they eat, what they do, and how they connect with each other. Dr. Berman advises she tries a ‘surrender date,’ in which she intentionally hands over power to her partner and he gets to decide everything on date night. He can pick the outfit she wears, the jewelry she puts on, the route they take to dinner, the place they eat and even what she orders! Essentially, she goes ‘cold turkey’ when it comes to giving up her dominant side and lets her partner completely take the reins.
On today’s episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman tackles the concept of a ‘new normal’ and the fundamental invitation the pandemic offered each of us: The opportunity to go inward and begin prioritizing connection over distraction, and quality over quantity when it comes to our relationships. For many of us, the pandemic has put a pause on our sex lives. On today’s episode, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who says she hasn’t had sex for a year… and now has decided she wants to wait to have sex until she meets ‘the one.’ She is hesitant to be intimate with a partner too early because she knows it will create feelings of attachment even if the partner isn’t right for her or if the partner isn’t seeking a relationship. So how can she manage her feelings of desire while patiently waiting for ‘the one,’ and how can she explain to her dates that she isn’t going to be open to hookups or casual sexual connection?Dr. Berman also talks about how masculine and feminine energy can impact our desire in the bedroom and the way we sexually respond to our partners. Many women are multi-taskers who have a difficult time letting go and being wholly present in the bedroom, as they are worried about the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink or the presentation they have to give at the office the next day. Dr. Berman discusses the concept of ‘choreplay’ and how being a more engaged and helpful partner around the house can create space for women to feel more relaxation and desire, leading to more sexual pleasure for both partners!
On today's episode of the "Language of Love," Dr. Laura Berman talks to a woman who wants to know how she can prioritize and nurture her relationship, even as she is dealing with the great trauma and terror of knowing that many of her loved ones are across the world living in a very dangerous situation. She wants to know: “How can you maintain physical and emotional intimacy when you are terrified for your family members who are living in a warzone?” Dr. Berman’s advice is applicable for anyone who is grappling with loss and fear during this time of social upheaval. Prioritizing our love lives and maintaining intimacy can feel impossible and even shallow when there is so much pain all around us, but Dr. Berman helps reveal how safeguarding our bond and nurturing our relationship needs can actually serve us and helps us be of service in return. Next up, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who wants to know how to tell when she is ready to date after a breakup. When is it time to put yourself back out there, especially as we slowly nudge our way out of the pandemic? How do you deal with feelings of anxiety and trepidation about dating again after heartache? Then, Dr. Berman talks to a woman who asks what you should do when you and your partner have differing viewpoints on the virus. If one of you is pro-mask and pro-vaccine, but the other is afraid of the jab or is ready to stop wearing a mask and social distancing, how can you bridge that divide and ensure that you find a fair compromise that keeps you both feeling safe and respected?

Salata was an executive producer for “The Oprah Show” as well as the president of the Oprah Winfrey Network and Harpo Productions. Since leaving Oprah, Salata began to focus more intentionally on her own personal growth and leaned into the power of ‘the beautiful no.’What is the beautiful no? Salata says that her people-pleasing nature and her desire to excel in her career and her personal relationships led her to struggle with setting boundaries and saying no, whether it was to opportunities or favors or constantly giving to those around her. Like many people, especially women, Salata says she struggled with codependence and was unable to prioritize her own needs and emotional health. This left her always feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from her own self-worth.On this episode, Salata and Dr. Berman talk about Salata’s book “The Beautiful No,” and what led her to finally grow into the power of no and learn to not only be comfortable setting boundaries, but for it to come naturally and easily, without feelings of guilt or regret. Having been to the ‘other side,’ Moorjani offers her wisdom and perspective about what happens we die and what we can do here in the present to cope with loss. And is it possible to find connection with people who have passed on, to communicate with those who are no longer with us in physical form? Moorjani thinks we can, but we have to be sure that we are vibrating at a high frequency and in a space of lightness and openness in order to be able to receive these messages from our loved ones. Dr. Berman also delves into how difficult these past weeks have been. “Grief isn’t a straight line,” she says, explaining that while she had been previously feeling peace and comfort, she has lately been struggling with great despair. On today’s unique episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Berman talks about what to do when sex gets in the way of love. Yes, while normally Dr. Berman addresses issues like lack of libido or lack of sexual pleasure, today she is talking about what happens when TOO much sexual pleasure gets in the way of the love you want. First, Dr. Berman helps a woman who says that she is tired of men who seem to only view her as a sexual object. While she dates a lot and has no problem meeting men, she says that she is constantly dealing with guys who are too overtly sexual at first and don’t seem interested in her beyond sexual gratification. How can she attract a man who is actually interested in a relationship and not just hooking up? How can you create a dating profile that is flirty and fun, while still making it clear that you are only looking for monogamy and serious relationships, not casual sex? Next, Dr. Berman helps a man who is dating a woman 20 years his junior. While their sex life is fantastic and he is having a great time, he is tired of his friends and family assuming that he is just her sugar daddy and that this isn’t a real relationship. How can he get people to take their relationship seriously, and what should he do about the fact that she is currently in financial distress and could use his monetary support? Is it ever possible for May-December relationships to last, especially when there is a power imbalance and one person has all the money, while the other has the youth and beauty? And what do you if your friends aren’t respectful of your romantic choices or don’t take your younger partner seriously?
Have you ever been told you are too sensitive? On today's episode of "The Language of Love," Dr. Laura Berman talks with the incomparable Anita Moorjani, author of "Sensitive is the New Strong” about what it means to be highly sensitive. What careers are best suited for highly sensitive? How can you tell if you are highly sensitive or if your child is? Dr. Berman and Anita Moorjani also discuss the difference between being an empath and being highly sensitive. Turns out they are not the same thing, and it is very important for people to realize the difference between the two, especially if they suspect that they might have empath qualities. Although being an empath can be very powerful and very meaningful, it also comes with risks, especially if you aren’t aware of how to harness your empath abilities. Empaths take on the emotions and energy of other people around them, literally experiencing their sorrow and anger and fear as if it is happening to them. So empaths can very easily become ungrounded and lose their connection to their own energetic state and therefore become unable to access their own personal power. And many times empaths struggle with codependency and a need to ‘fix’ other people, believing as Dr. Berman says, “If you need me, you won’t leave me.” Learn how empaths can tap into their unique strengths without falling prey to these common pitfalls on this special episode of “The Language of Love” with Anita Moorjani…and stay tuned for part two of Dr. Berman’s interview with Moorjani coming soon!
On today's episode of "The Language of Love," Dr. Berman helps people who are facing physical roadblocks on their journey to sexual pleasure, in particular women who are suffering the loss of desire and arousal due to menopause. Dr. Berman first helps a woman going through menopause who is dealing with unpleasant symptoms like rashes after intimacy and difficulty reaching orgasm. She says she feels as though her clitoris is difficult to find and that things are dry and uncomfortable down there. Is diminishing estrogen causing her rashes and dryness? How can older women protect their sexual health when faced with these unique challenges? And how can you talk to your doctor about these sexual symptoms in a proactive way without feeling embarrassed? Next, Dr. Berman helps a woman with lichen sclerosis who has extreme pain and discomfort during sex. Around 1 in 80 women suffer from lichen sclerosis, but it is most common among middle-aged and elderly women. This inflammatory condition can be very painful and it often takes a toll on a woman’s sex life. Is there any way to preserve sexual pleasure when pain makes you afraid to be touched? And how can she help her partner feel loved and desired even when sexual intimacy sometimes has to take a back seat due to her condition? Even when sexual challenges can complicate your ability to reach orgasm or achieve pleasure, on this episode, Dr. Berman shows that is still possible to find treatments and options that can help to support your journey back to sexual wellness. Often this will require treatment, sex therapy, or talking to your doctor, but as Dr. Berman reveals, with small mindful changes, you can continue having passionate sex even as you age or face medical conditions. Most importantly, however, you have to continue communicating with your partner, and seek ways to keep that physical connection and romance alive, even when sexual intimacy isn’t always possible. There is no such thing as a ‘sexpiration’ date, as long as couples are willing to keep prioritizing sexual pleasure and working together to create great sex.
This episode of "The Language of Love" is all about mismatched libidos and what to do when you and your partner don't have the same level of desire. Mismatched libidos are one of the most common issues that couples face and it often leads to the end of relationships, so this very special episode can be invaluable in helping to preserve your marriage and your sexual pleasure. First, a woman asks for help restoring her lost libido, as her sex drive tanked after she began anti-depressants. Anti-depressants are notorious for sexual side effects, yet they are invaluable in treating depression and anxiety. Luckily, it is possible to continue taking your medications without sacrificing passion and pleasure. Dr. Berman offers advice for how to sex-proof your relationship even when you are taking SSRIs and other psychiatric medications, as well as how to talk to your partner about your decreased libido and help them to still feel loved and desired even when you are not in the mood. Then, a caller reaches out because her husband is rarely interested in sex, and when they do have intimacy, he seems distracted and stressed out. She is eager to have more sex, but not if he is doing so out of duress and his heart isn’t really in it. But could it be that his history of ED is making him scared to have sex? Dr. Berman discusses how erectile dysfunction can make men afraid to engage in intimacy, even if they actually desire sex because they fear appearing less masculine or displeasing their partner. Over time, this becomes problematic because the less sex you have, the more accustomed you will be to not having it, decreasing your libido and harming your sexual response. So how can this couple get their sex life back on track and help to decrease his fear of performance issues?
On today's episode of "The Language of Love," Dr. Berman helps listeners find out what may be holding them back from living their most authentic life, inside and outside the bedroom. From gender identity to sexual fantasies to finding love, Dr. Berman helps listeners create their most passionate and fulfilling lives with vulnerability, honesty, and daring. Dr. Berman first talks to a woman who fantasizes about watching her partner have sex with other women (known as a cuckquean fantasy, or cuckold fantasy when the genders are reversed). Why does she have this fantasy and should she act on it in real life, such as by having a threesome? Is it ever a good idea to invite another person into your bedroom, and why does she want to see her husband pleasuring another woman? Next, Dr. Berman hears from a transgender caller who wants to transition but is afraid to take that first step. Should she take that leap and start living full-time as a woman, even if it leads to the heartbreaking end of her marriage, or is there therapy that can help reverse gender dysphoria? Should she risk everything to live as a woman, or continue staying in the closet and keeping her true desires a secret? Last, Dr. Berman hears from a caller who is looking for her soulmate but is beginning to feel frustrated by her experiences dating online. How you can stay patient while waiting for love? How do you strike that balance between letting go of control and unrealistic expectations while also being proactive when it comes to finding love? Dr. Berman gives her best advice for how to navigate dating, especially online dating and dating during a pandemic. It is possible to actively search for love without feeling incomplete or desperate? How can you find wholeness even when you are single and everyone around you seems happily coupled up?
Is it possible to be monogamous for life? In this episode of "The Language of Love," Dr. Berman talks about whether or not monogamy is truly sustainable. Next, Dr. Berman helps a caller who says her husband wants her to talk dirty, but she doesn't know how to get started. How can a 'good girl' tap into her naughty side without feeling inauthentic or as though she is playing a porn star role? Dr. Berman then helps a woman who says she and her longtime partner struggle to "get past the silliness" in their relationship in order to get to the sexiness. How can lovers continue to find passion and excitement when they are also best friends who love to clown around with each other?

From somatic therapy to grief yoga to breathwork, she sunk into her most primal and terrifying feelings about the loss of her son. She talks about how the process not only helped her to start wrapping her arms around some of her grief but also re-introduced her to her childlike connection to the spirit world and the unseen.

She explains what happened that tragic night, why she decided to share it with the media, and how she has been coping during this whirlwind.
