For our final episode of the season, Eabha and Emmet sat down with Marketing Week Columnist, Brand Consultant and Multi-Award winning Professor, Mark Ritson. Our discussion touched upon many different topics such as the over tactification of marketing, our over reliance on digital messaging, whether covid 19 will change anything significantly for marketers, how old marketing concepts are being dressed in new language, and how to forge a successful career in this profession. Mark was an Assistant Professor at London Business School and the University of Minnesota, an Associate Professor and then Adjunct Professor at Melbourne Business School, and Visiting Professor at MIT Sloan and SMU. His MBA teaching won a number of prizes including best teacher at LBS, MIT & MBS. He has also worked as a global brand consultant for clients that include Baxter, Loewe, McKinsey, Subaru, Donna Karan, Westpac, Shiseido, Flight Centre, Johnson & Johnson, De Beers, Sephora, Benefit, Amgen, Ericsson, Jurlique, Cloudy Bay and WD40. For thirteen years - from 2002 to 2015 - He served as the in-house professor for LVMH - the world's largest luxury group - working in Paris with senior executives from brands like Louis Vuitton, Dom Perignon and Hennessy. He writes a weekly column for Marketing Week and another for The Australian. On three occasions he has won the Business Columnist of the Year at the PPA Press Awards, the highest award for magazine journalism in the UK. He was also the British Society of Magazine Editors Business Columnist of the Year in 2018. His more scholarly publications include articles in the Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Advertising and the Journal of Consumer Research.
This episode features the second part of our discussion with Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK & Author, Rory Sutherland. We discussed a number of topics such as how ergodicity can be used by marketers, how zoom has levelled the playing field between introverts and extroverts and whether or not the restructured workplace could lead to the four day work week. Rory is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy in the UK, an attractively vague job title which has allowed him to co-found a behavioral science practice within the agency. He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour - these are the very small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make - for instance tripling the sales rate of a call centre by adding just a few sentences to the script. Put another way, lots of agencies will talk about "bought, owned and earned" media: we also look for "invented media" and "discovered media": seeking out those unexpected (and inexpensive) contextual tweaks that transform the way that people think and act. Before founding Ogilvy’s behavioral science practice, Rory was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988. He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global. He writes regular columns for the Spectator, Market Leader and Impact, and also occasional pieces for Wired. He is the author of two books: The Wiki Man, and Alchemy, The surprising Power of Ideas which don't make Sense.
For this week's episode, we sat down with Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, Rory Sutherland. Rory and I discussed how to apply a behavioural science lens to market research and the why methods of the psychological advertising of the 1950s/60s shouldn’t be lost in data driven world of today. We also spoke about the importance of cryptic crosswords and crime fiction for improving deductive reasoning. This episode consists of the first of a two part discussion. Rory Sutherland is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, an attractively vague job title which has allowed him to co-found a behavioural science practice within the agency. He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour - these are the very small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make - for instance tripling the sales rate of a call centre by adding just a few sentences to the script. We sat down with Professor Damien McLoughlin to get an insight into the changing landscape of marketing education. Other topics covered include customer lifetime value, brand finance, why you should improve your strengths rather than improving your weaknesses and Damien's similarities to Australian actor, Russell Crowe. Damien is the professor of marketing at UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business and the illustrious programme director of our own course, the MSc in Marketing Development Practice. He is a visiting professor at NYU's stern school of business and on the board of directors at Bord Iascaigh Mhara - Ireland's Seafood Development Agency.
In this introductory episode Shane & Emmet sit down with fellow advisor, Tomas Gogarty. Tomas is one of the many unique people that make up the great community on our programme. He had, to put it mildly, an unorthodox application process when it came to getting into the course. An international student, hailing from north London, Tomas spoke about a variety of topics in this discussion - his strange application process, his insightful mother, the great friends he has made so far and the oftentimes bizarre experiences that he has had working on projects for this course.
