Another giant in the Muslim community has been lost. Esteemed academic and hafith Prof Abdus Salaam Muhammad Karaan from Strand passed away yesterday. Prof Karaan is the eldest son of the highly respected Islamic scholar, the late Moulana Yusuf Karaan and Hajja Zuleikha and the brother of the MJC Mufti Taha Karaan and VOC pioneer Munadia Karaan. Prof Abdu Salaam was a Member of the National Planning Commission of South Africa and Professor and Dean at the University of Stellenbosch in the Faculty of AgriSciences. He also served on the board of several companies.
