Ottignon & Manzanza is a collaboration between drummer Myele Manzanza (First Word Records / Sound Signature) and keyboardist Aron Ottignon (Blue Note France / Urban Trout). 17th April 2020 will see the release of their debut single and live video 'I'm Moving On'. Recorded live at Funkhaus Berlin, 'I'm Moving On' is an emotional journey showcasing their blend of jazz and house with Myele Manzanza developing a whirling dervish tornado behind the kit and Aron Ottignon mixing his vocoder flavours with swirling sonics and a virtuosic keyboard & synth bass improvisation. The song is jazz music rooted to the earth by dance, and house music elevated to the sky with freedom & improvisation. Having both collaborated with artists as diverse as Theo Parrish, Woodkid, Baaba Maal, Stromae, Electric Wire Hustle, Jordan Rakei, Mark de Clive-Lowe & Miguel Atwood Fergusson, and drawing from their shared love of jazz, broken beat and electronic music, Ottignon & Manzanza have created a sound of their own that fuses top tier improvisation with a seamless integration of modern tech and organic acoustic sonics. Formed in their home country of New Zealand in 2019, Ottignon & Manzanza is a project driven by the raw passion of two kiwi expats determined to make their mark on the world stage.

“Berlin based former Blue Note pianist maps an electronic polyrhythmic course of jazz’s near future and recent past” Aron Ottignon writes hits, collaborates and listens. Mixing jazz, roots, Caribbean, Afro-beats and more, his world of music defies a Universal label. Re-gaining artistic independence in 2019, the prodigious pianist has found time for a prolific work load producing, composing and engineering an EP every six months (or thatʼs his plan) from his Berlin studio. He’s also working on various collaborations, these include celebrated Senegalese percussionist Bakane Seck (featuring Grammy nominee Baaba Maal), Puerto Rico / Miami based ÌFÉ – with a single to be released soon, and also a duo project with powerhouse fellow NZ dummer Myele Manzanza (First Word Records). In their ‘Spaces’ series, Aron and Rodi travel to a variety of locations to perform their unique take on improvised music.

Aron is often building a melodic motif on the piano by bouncing off the unpredictable timbre, tone, texture and noise Rodi is creating through sampling, granular synthesis and live studio mixing techniques.

Some of the additional elements utilized are west african percussion, melodica, and a series of live feedback loops run through filters. They also heavily rely on the natural acoustics of the space and dynamics through using varied microphone placement.
