As Prophet Muhammad was maturing and developing in Mecca, he too would look for his spouse and would find her in the person of Khadijah the daughter of Khuwaylid. She would give him comfort, support, love and her wealth to promote Islam and propagate the message. Join us in this episode as we review the marriage of the century.
Everyone needs to work to support themselves and their lifestyle – and the prophets of Allāh are no exception to this rule. Having lost his father before he was born, how, where and by whom would Prophet Muhammad learn the skills of business and commerce – a requirement given the era he was living in. Coming into this world as an orphan, ʿAbdullāh ibn Abdul Muttalib died before his son, the final prophet of Allāh could be born. People make prayers and supplications to Allāh on a daily basis all around the world. Sometimes, those prayers are immediately answered and they get what they desire. At other times, it may take days, weeks, months or years – and in the case of the supplication of Prophet Ibrāhīm for a prophet to come from Mecca, it took over 3,000 years to materialize. In this episode, we journey through the supplication.
What was the journey that the immaculate light (noor) of Prophet Muhammad made from his pre-Earthly existence through the past prophets such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Moses, and others until finally reaching to his father, ʿAbdullāh ibn Abd al-Muttalib? In this episode, we follow the Divinely-created light of Prophet Muhammad as it travels through the loins of the various prophets of the past.
Where was Prophet Muhammad before he came to Earth? Is there some place where the souls ‘reside’ before they are permitted to come to Earth? What, if anything, does the Quran say about our pre-existence and “how” did the light of Prophet Muhammad make its way from the pre-worldly existence to Mecca? In this episode, we try and trace the light of Prophet Muhammad before his birth.

The eighth Imam, Ali the son of Musa al-Rida, peace be upon them both, has been quoted as saying: "Indeed the most frightening times that can come for this creation (the human being) are three: The day of their birth and their coming out from the womb of their mother and they see the world; And the day they die and they observe and preview the world to come and its inhabitants; And the day they are raised up (from their graves) and they see the rulings (of that realm) which they had never seen while in life of this world…"

The Prophets of Allāh brought everything humanity needed for success – both in this life and the world to come. Recognizing that humans are multi-faceted beings with unique requirements, the teachings they need must provide guidance from birth to death. (24) O Allah, on this day, I ask You for what pleases You, and I seek refuge in You from what displeases You, I ask You to grant me the opportunity to obey You and not disobey You, O One who is generous with those who ask.
(23) O Allah, on this day, wash away my sins, purify me from all flaws, examine my heart with (for) the piety of the hearts, O One who overlooks the shortcomings of the sinners.
(22) O Allah, on this day, open for me the doors of Your Grace, send down on me its blessings, help me towards the causes of Your mercy, and give me a place in the comforts of Paradise, O the one who answers the call of the distressed.
(21) O Allah, on this day, show me the way to win Your pleasure, do not let Shaytan have a means over me, make Paradise an abode and a resting place for me, O the One who fulfills the requests of the needy.
(20) O Allah, on this day, open for me the doors of the heavens, and lock the doors of Hell from me, help me to recite the Qur’an, O the One who sends down tranquility into the hearts of believers
(19) O Allah, on this day, multiply for me its blessings, and ease my path towards its bounties, do not deprive me of the acceptance of its good deeds, O the Guide towards the clear truth.
(18) O Allah, on this day, awaken me with the blessings of its early mornings, Illuminate my heart with the brightness of its rays, let every part of my body follow its effects, by Your light, O the illuminator of the hearts of those who know.
(17) O Allah, on this day, guide me towards righteous actions, fulfil my needs and hopes, O One who does not need explanations nor questions, O One who knows what is in the chests of the (people of the) world. Bless Muhammad and his family, the Pure.
(16) O Allah, on this day, grant me compatability with the good, keep me away from patching up with the evil, lead me in it, by Your mercy, to the permanent abode, by Your Godship, O the God of the worlds.
(15) O Allah, on this day, grant me the obedience of the humble expand my chest through the repentance of the humble, by Your security, O the shelter of the fearful.
(14) O Allah, on this day, do not condemn me for slips, make me decrease mistakes and errors, do not make me a target for afflictions and troubles, by Your honor, O the honor of the Muslims.
Today in Ramadan, we focus on the very bad trait of conceit and arrogance. By studying one piece of the guidance given by Luqman the Wise to his son, we see the role of humbleness and humility in our live and how we need to keep away form self-conceit as no matter how great, rich, powerful, or good looking we think we are there is someone out there better, richer, more powerful and better looking!
Today in Ramadan, we focus on the agents of corruption - people whom God does not like - those who spread evil and wickedness on the earth with no regard for others. We will seek to better understand the forms of corruption which are present and how such evil people not only destroy their world to come, but end up destroying the innocent men, women and children in the world today to reach their selfish goals.

Intellects Which are Captives of the Lower Passions: “Many a slavish mind is subservient to overpowering longings.”
Misguided Passions – An Important Deflector from Recognition of Allah: “When one excessively loves a thing, it blinds the individual and sickens their heart. They would then see the world around them with a diseased eye, and would hear things with unhearing ears. Those uncontrolled desires have cut asunder their intellect, and the world has made killed their spiritual heart.”
The Taste of True Faith: “An individual will never taste true faith until they have three characteristics within themselves: a deep understanding of the religion; perseverance in the face of tribulations, and moderation in spending.”
The Need of Choosing a Role-Model: “Remember that every follower has a leader whom he follows and from the effulgence of whose knowledge he takes light. ”
The Sword of Intellect and the Sheath of Forbearance: “Forbearance is a curtain for covering, and wisdom is a sharp sword. Therefore, conceal the weaknesses in your conduct with forbearance and kill your desires with your wisdom.”
Taking Part in Gatherings of Iniquity: “The individual who believes in Allah and also believes in the Last day will not go to a place or gathering in which raybah is taking place.”
The Eventual Outcome of the Pious and Sinners: “Be aware that sins are like unruly horses on whom their riders have been placed and their reins have been let loose so that they would jump with them in Hell. Be aware that God-consciousness is like trained horses on whom the riders have been placed with the reins in their hands, so that they would take the riders to Heaven.”
The Lead of Life: “…and prepare yourselves for death, since it is hovering over you. Be a people who wake up when called, and who know that this world is not their abode, and so have it changed (with the next)…”
Speaking and Silence: “There is no advantage for a scholar to keep quiet about an issue of wisdom just as there is no good in an ignorant or foolish person speaking an unintelligent thing.”
Time: One of the Witnesses on the Day of Judgement: “There is not a day which passes by on the child of Adam- every human being – except that day says to him: ‘I am a new day and I am a witness over you, so then speak goodness within me and do good deeds within me. I will bear witness for you on the Day of Judgement and indeed after today, you will never see me again.’”
Asceticism and Recognizing the World: “The ascetic one in the life of the transient world is one who, the more they become acquainted with the true essence of the material world, they distances themselves away from it more.”
Who is an ascetic (zahid): “The ascetic one, in the transient world, is the person whose fortitude is not over-taken by him coming face to face with the prohibited and who does not let the permissible preoccupy him from thanking God.”
The Source of Corruption: “Indeed the basis of the occurrence of evils are those base desires which are acted upon and the orders of God which are innovated. They those orders which are innovated are against the Book of Allah. People co-operate with each other about them to perform them even though it is against the religion of Allah.
The One Who is Truly Fasting: “The fasting of the body is in keeping away from nourishment (food and drink and all other things which are prohibited to be done while fasting) by one’s own choice out of fear of a punishment [from God] and out of a desire for a reward [from God] and recompense; and fasting of the soul is to keep the five senses away from all other forms of immorality and to empty the heart from all of the means of evil and wickedness.”
The Spirit of Worship: “Indeed, how many of those people who fast while they gain nothing from their fasting except hunger and thirst; and how many stand (in worship) and gain nothing except for sleepiness and tiredness! Glad tidings be to those with cognizance whose sleeping and eating is better than the worship and fasting of others [who do not have such knowledge and astuteness].”
The Best Steed and Provision: “[May the mercy of God be upon that person who] places fortitude and patience as his stead towards his own salvation and who places consciousness of God as his provision for his own death.”
The Path to the Influence of Satan: “O Kumayl! [And the path to the influence of Satan] lies in [what is mentioned in] the words of God, the Grand and Majestic, ‘Indeed he (Satan) has absolutely no power over My true servants.’ and in His statement, Grand and Majestic is He, ‘Indeed his (Satan’s) power only lies with those who befriend him and those who associate partners [with God].’”
The Path to Safety and Spiritual Wellness: “Spiritual wellness is in ten parts – nine of these lies in remaining silent, except when busy in the remembrance of God, and one [the remaining part] lies in refraining from [being present in the] gatherings of the simple minded people.”
The Path to Safety and Spiritual Wellness: “If only you were to contemplate upon the magnificent power [of God] and the adequate blessing [from Him], you would have returned back to the [right] path and would have feared the burning punishment, however, [your] hearts are sick and your spiritual sight is deficient.”

I swear by God I don’t believe that a servant can ever bring about God-consciousness [within himself] which would benefit him until he safeguards his tongue [his speech].”
Distanced from the Mercy of God: “May the one who has water and earth at his disposal however is still in a state of (material) poverty be distanced from God!”
Two Things Which Result in a Person’s Ruin: “There are two things which result in the destruction of people: fear of poverty and running after an [imaginary] glory.”
The Transitory World and the Next World: “That which will transpire [the world to come] is not that far away and that which will cause to separate [the life of this temporal world] is not close at hand.”
The Doors Towards Good Deeds: “There are three things which are considered to be the doors of [all] goodness: Generosity of the self, respectable speaking and fortitude in the face of irritation [from others].”
Deceptive Traps: “May the mercy of God be upon the individual who overpowers his base desires and passions and is saved from the deceptive traps of the transient world.”
The Reality of Fasting: “Fasting (al-siyam) truly means to keep away from the prohibitions (sins) just as a person keeps away from eating and drinking [in the state of fasting].”
The Due of God-Consciousness (Taqwa): “That which you did not benefit from today of the temporal world will return tomorrow, increased; [however] that which passed of your life yesterday will not return back today. Hope is for that which comes in the future while regret is for that which has already passed so therefore, ‘Have the consciousness of Allah as He deserves to be in a state of awe and do not die except in a state of submission (as Muslims).’”
A Good Outcome: “When Allah intend goodness for a servant, He grants him the good fortune that when he is about to leave this world, he does so in the best of ways and actions [on his record] and also grants the person to respite to take the initiative of His obedience before death.”
Take Account of Your Own Selves: “The individual who takes account of his/her own soul will have profited; while the person who is heedless of his/her own self will have suffered a loss.”
The Fusion of Laziness & Ineffectiveness: “Whenever one thing is united with something else - [and in this case] - laziness is combined with ineffectiveness, the [expected] outcome of this union is poverty.”
Send a Light for Yourself: “The goodness which you send ahead for your own self [to benefit from after your death] will be stored [and will be waiting for you], while that which you defer in sending will be a benefit for everyone other than yourself [while you will have to bear the responsibility of that which you left behind].”
A Different Explanation of ‘Taqwa’: “You should fear Allah about yourself and not allow Satan to lead you. Turn your face towards the next world because that is our path and your path, and fear that Allah may not entangle you in any sudden infliction which may destroy the root as well as cut away the branches.”
The Necessity to Learn and Teach Others: “Allah has not taken a pledge from the unenlightened that they should [go forth to] learn until He took an oath from the people of knowledge to go forth to teach.”
As Long as One’s Speech is not Remedid: “A servant’s faith will not be rectified [and unchangeable] until he rectifies his heart; and the heart of the servant will not be rectified until his tongue is corrected.”
The Consequences of Having Unattainable Desires: “Individuals who have the longest of unattainable desires [in the transient world] are the same people who have the worst of actions.”
Five Commandments for a Better Life: “O Kumayl [ibne Ziyad]! Always speak the truth; keep close friendship with those who are God-conscious; distance yourself from the open sinners; be careful with the hypocrites; and do not befriend the treacherous ones.”
The Best Path in Life: “O’ Kumayl [ibne Ziyad]! Indeed the most beloved of things which a servant can employ to attain true servitude to Allah, after affirming His oneness and the truthfulness of His close friends are [the following three things]: chastity, tolerance and clemency.”
The Best of Spiritual Provisions and Supplies: “There is no [true] goodness in any provisions from the temporal world except for the provision of God-Consciousness [taqwa].”
The Best Friend: “A person’s best friend is [for him to possess] good manners” and also he has said: “How many times is it seen that a respectable person is humiliated due to his [bad] morals; and a debased person is honored due to his [virtuous] morals.”
The Best of Actions: “In one sitting, he [Imam Ali] taught his companions four-hundred subjects which would be of benefit to their next world and this world … [and one of the topics which he taught them was] actively await the succor and do not be despondent from the mercy of God as indeed the best of actions with Allah, the Noble and Grand, is to actively await the succor.”
Be With Us, the Ahlul Bayt, By…: “O Kumayl [ibne Ziyad al-Nakha’i], do not take [anything from this religion] except from us [our teachings - the Ahlul Bayt] so that through this, you may be considered as being from us!”
The Worst of Friends: “The worst of your brothers [friends] is the one who [continuously] flatters you and hides your defects from you.”
The Gravest of Sins: “A person’s intentional unfamiliarity with his own short-comings and defects is the greatest of his sins.”
The Best Struggle [Jihad]: “There is nothing more admirable than struggle [jihad] and the greatest of all struggles is the struggle against the passions and lower desires.”
The Best Relationship & the Greatest Honour: “Reciprocating love is the strongest of relationships; and sound knowledge is the noblest of relations.”
What is a ‘Religious Innovation’ and Who are the People of ‘Innovation’: “As for the people of religious innovation, these are individuals who go against the commands of Allah, and His Book, and His Messenger – they are people who act based on their own personal whims and ambitions – [and this is what the people of innovation are] – even if they are in large numbers [within the Muslim community].”
Who Should we Seek Advice from: “Do not accept the advice of misers in your decision-making process as they will try to keep you away from doing good to others and threaten you with poverty; and do not allow cowards [to act as your advisers] because they will try and make you timid in enforcing orders; and do not allow the greedy [to act as your advisors] as they will make oppression to be something beautiful to you…”
Faith and Action – Two Enduring Partners: “True faith and [the performance of good] actions are close friends of one another and are associates of one another which will never separate from one another.”
The Importance of Fortitude and Endurance: “I advise you to have fortitude as indeed fortitude is to faith just as the head is to the [rest of the] body; there is no benefit with a body without a head and [similarly], there is no goodness in faith without fortitude.”
Think about Yourself First … Then Others: “The one who places himself as a leader for society must start by refining himself before [cultivating] others and must train others through his own [good] conduct before training others through his speaking.”
Safety and Security under the Shadow of Religion: “If I am assured that [at least] one trait of goodness is deeply rooted in a person, I will tolerate him because of that trait, and I will turn a blind eye to his lack of any other. However, I do not turn a blind eye to a lack of intellect or [a lack of] devotion [in him], for to lack devotion is to lack inner peace, and one cannot savor life with fear [and uncertainty]. And to lack intellect is to lack life [itself], and such a person can be compared to none but a dead man.”
True Leadership and Servitude: “Do good to anyone whom you wish so that you become their superior; and depend on anyone whom you wish so that you become their captive; and be autonomous from anyone you wish so that you become their peer.”
The One who is Truly Rich: “There is no greater wealth than [possessing a sound] intellect and there is no greater poverty than being [in a state of self-imposed] unawareness.”
Moderation in Everything: “One who engages in extreme displays of hostility and enmity will fall prey to [committing] sins; and the person who restricts this [hostility and enmity in their life] will be victorious.”
The Worth and Honour of the Human Being: “O Kumayl [ibne Ziyad]! Know that the best form of adornment for a believer [man or woman] is: humbleness and unpretentiousness; and his [the believer] beauty lies in chastity; and his [the believer] superiority lies in deep contemplation [on religious and worldly matters] and his [the believer] eminence lies in avoiding meaningless conversation.”
Three Foundational Pillars of Society: “The transient world rests on three factors: The articulate scholar who acts according to the knowledge which he expresses; the affluent individual who is not miserly when it comes to giving his wealth to the people of God, the Noble and Grand; the needy person when he bears [his difficulty] with patience and fortitude. Therefore, when the scholar conceals his knowledge [and does not share it with others who need it], and the rich person is miserly [and does not help the needy people in society] and the underprivileged does not display patience [in the face of adversity], then tribulations and destruction will engulf the world.”
The Mainstays of Repentance: “Repentance [al-tawbah] rests upon four [foundational] pillars: remorse within the heart [for what was performed]; seeking forgiveness with the tongue [verbally repentance]; acting with the limbs [physical repentance] and the firm resolve not to repeat [that bad action again].”
The Truth Worth of One’s Actions: “O Kumayl [ibne Ziyad]! [Know that] it is not important whether you pray and fast and give in charity [in the way of God] – rather what is important is that your prayers [and all other actions] are performed with a pure heart and that [all of your actions] are performed correctly in the presence of God and that [all of your actions] are blended with humility and humbleness.”
The Worth of Knowing Ones’ Self: “The person who ‘purchases’ his self and frees himself is not like the person who ‘sells’ his self and goes towards his own destruction.”
Principles and [Amplified] Sustenance: “It is through having good ethics and principles that the keys to the treasures of sustenance lies.”
Acting with Integrity: “The best provision for the next world [which a person can acquire in this life] is [through] acting with goodness with the servants [of God] … The pinnacle of true faith is to do good deeds to humanity.”
Is the Majority Always Correct: “O people! Never have fear while treading the path of [true] guidance due to the limited number of people who are on this [path].”
The Mincer in the Hell Fire: “Indeed in the fire [of hell] there is a grinder which continues to spin. Will you not ask me what this grinder minces? It was asked: ‘What is this grinder mincing O Commander of the Faithful!’ He replied: The wicked religious scholars; and the lecherous reciters of the Qur’an; and the oppressive leaders; and the treacherous government ministers; and the deceitful and dishonest experts…”
The People’s Freedom: “O People! Indeed from [Prophet] Adam [’s lineage] no one has been created as a slave – male or female – rather, indeed all of humanity are born free.”
This World …At What Price: “Do not be like the one who earnestly desires [goodness of] the life of the next world but does not act [righteously] to gain it; and [do not be like] the one who delays seeking forgiveness due to the long drawn out desires [of this world] and speaks about this temporal world as one who is an ascetic however acts like one who is covetous of it.”
Unattainable Yearnings and Aspirations: “There is not a single individual who does harbor long, drawn out desires [for what he wants his future to hold] except that this results in forgetting [their eventual] death and a contamination in their [present] actions.”
The Etiquette of Business Dealings: “The sale should be smooth, with correct weights and prices, not harmful to either party, the seller or the buyer. Whoever commits hoarding after you have already prohibited it, give him exemplary but not excessive punishment.”
The Important Outcome of the Remembrance of Allah: “O Kumayl [ibne Ziyad] in the face of every difficulty, say: ‘There is no strength or power save with Allah the Most High, the Most Grand’; and when given any blessing, say: ‘All praise belongs to Allah’ so that you may be granted even more; and anytime your sustenance is delayed then seek forgiveness from Allah as this will result in the expansion of that [sustenance].”
The Diverse Effects of Forgiveness: “In the same amount in which forgiveness from a vile individual debases, it has the ability to rectify [the situation] if from a noble person.”
A Constant State of Remembrance of Allah: “Every action of importance which is performed without remembering the name of God will remain incomplete.”
