Elizabeth LaPrelle (left) and Anna Roberts-Gevalt appear at the Blue Ridge Music Center on Saturday, October 7, 2017. They’re two of the artists spotlighted on this week’s Across the Blue Ridge.
Blue Ridge Music Center
This week’s show brings us a fun listening opportunity in southern mountain fiddling. We hear a couple of great old time fiddlers – Bobby Taylor and Ralph Blizard – and their mentors, Clark Kessinger and Arthur Smith. Hear all four fiddlers on tunes fast and slow, with a couple of fiddle songs thrown in. Plus, a wonderful collection of old time and classic-sounding bluegrass songs in the second part of the show. Then there’s a wrap-up in the third part with fiddler, banjo picker and tunesmith Jane Rothfield, a great song about who’s really the fool from Trevor McKenzie of western North Carolina, and a reach back to early bluegrass with Red Allen. Can’t miss with this show filled with engaging music and conversation.

The late Frank Proffitt of Reece, NC is one of the many outstanding artists on this week’s Across the Blue Ridge. He made his own banjos and carried an outstanding repertoire of traditional songs and tunes.
Folk Legacy Records
This week, we celebrate master fiddlers from West Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina with music of the late Clark Kessinger, Buddy Thomas and Benny Jarrell. It’s a grand experience hearing expert fiddlers’ takes on classic and obscure dance tunes. Plus … banjo player Frank Proffitt of the North Carolina mountains, with a lonesome yet serene sound, and a couple of selections from a new album by David Holt and Josh Goforth. These two outstanding musicians breathe some new life into songs and tunes from the old time mountain, ragtime and jazz traditions.
