On AfricaGender Indaba this week we focus on the launch of the Child Marriage Monitoring Mechanism. This is a platform that is useful in generating relevant analyses, making data accessible and promoting data use. The initiative brings together international and regional organisations as well as civil society organisations and young people around a shared commitment to strengthening monitoring and accountability on ending child marriage. To look at this we have:
• Vidhya Ganesh – Director: Division of Data, Analytics, Planning & Monitoring, UNICEF.
• Nontobeko Hloniphile Tshabalala: Comms Lead, Youth Division, African Union Commission.
• Nana Thundu: Policy Officer, Social Welfare Division, African Union Commission.
On Africa Gender Indaba this week, we focus on efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM), an age-old practice in Africa and several parts of the world that has been declared a human rights violation of women and girls as it poses threats to their health and development. In recent years there has been evidence that the inclusion of men and boys in the campaign to end FGM will bolster these attempts. To look at this, Khopotso Bodibe profiles organisations that work with men and boys towards the elimination of the practice. Joining us in conversation is: • Peter Kemei, Founding Member and Head of Operations, Kenya-based Men End FGM Movement. • Franck Ouedraego, Programmes Manager, Tackle Africa, Burkina Faso. • Samantha Royle, Tackle Africa, Burkina Faso. • Cynthia Umurugu, Community of Practice on FGM…
On Africa Gender Indaba this week, will focus on the launch of Consent to Access, a campaign aimed to address the sexual and reproductive health needs and rights of young people in East and Southern Africa. It aims to achieve this through advocacy for improved laws, policies and practices on age of consent for adolescent access to sexual and reproductive health information and services. We discuss the campaign with Chivuli Ukwimi, Programme Manager for Hivos Regional Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Fund; Nana Zulu, Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Programme Officer - Regional SRHR Fund at Hivos and Dr Godfrey Kangaunde, an activist and scholar on sexual and reproductive health rights…
Changing men’s attitude on healthcare
In this edition of AfricaGender Indaba, we profile Seyetfu Majaha, a project whose mission is to change men’s attitudes and practices around seeking healthcare, particularly HIV testing and treatment, in eSwatini.
We speak with the Project Co-Ordinator, Thokozani Gina…
Seeking ways to end GBV
Khopotso Bodibe speaks to Emmanuel Gabari, a human rights activist and Executive Director of African Focus for Youth Development, a Nigeria-based organisation, on the role of men in ending gender-based violence.
It’s a fact that men are largely the perpetrators of gender-based violence, but it’s also a fact that men themselves can be agents of change…
Spotlight on the recently launched #RespectMyBody campaign We are in conversation with MenEngage Uganda, a network that engages men and boys to adopt and promote the values of gender equality in that East African country, has launched an online campaign aimed at addressing sexual harassment. The campaign runs on social media with the hashtag #RespectMyBody. To hear more about it, Khopotso Bodibe speaks with Shira Natenda, head of MenEngage Uganda’s Economic Empowerment Working Group…
In this week’s edition of the show, Khopotso Bodibe discusses research focusing on how male migrant men who live in OECD countries and who are married to or related to women who have undergone female genital mutilation can help them access health care services. He speaks with Nottingham University Ph D Nursing candidate, Mark Dwira. And in Eswatini, Kwakha Indvodza, an organisation that works with men and boys to challenge negative masculinities, is working on a campaign to challenge fathers in the Swati Kingdom to reflect and change their ways to adopt a more active role in the home, including child-raising responsibilities, in a deeply patriarchal and conservative society. Tom Churchyard, Executive Director of Kwakha Indvodza, joins Khopotso Bodibe to talk about this campaign.
In this edition of AfricaGender Indaba, Khopotso Bodibe focuses on stimulus packages aimed at alleviating the impact of Covid-19 on citizens in Zimbabwe from a gendered lens, while raising critical recommendations going forward. Discussions will look at how these stimulus packages helped address – or failed to address - the attendant sexual and gender-based violence that spiked during the pandemic.
We will hear from: • Tawanda Zimhunga, Deputy Director of Child Protections Services, Ministry of Public Service, Labour & Social Services in Zimbabwe. • Ekenia Chifamba, Director of Shamwari Yemwanasikana. • Ronika Mumbire, Director of Zimbabwe Women’s Bureau.
HIV and AIDS have brought into sharp focus men’s poor relationship with seeking health care services, for both prevention and treatment purposes. Poor health-seeking attitudes and behaviours often result in men not accessing health care, which in turn causes higher morbidity and mortality.
Kgopotso Bodibe highlights a new multi-media campaign that aims to change this in South Africa. The campaign, called MINA, focuses on men and their health and wellbeing, while also engaging them more directly on HIV prevention, care and treatment initiation and retention.
We will hear from a number of men who have overcome their challenges with health-seeking. They include Thanduxolo, a long-time survivor of HIV and one of the voices and faces that drive the Mina campaign as well as Dr John Blanchard, Director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, South Africa.
Lastly, we will hear about research on how the Covid-19 lockdown has impacted the ability of street children in Zimbabwe to eke out a living on the streets.

And, a Kenyan woman who was subjected to female genital mutilation or cutting, a practice that involves the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for cultural and many other non-therapeutic reasons, describes how the pain has remained with her into adulthood.

We’ll also hear how the High Court in Nairobi, Kenya, has given a ruling that effectively forces Parliament to increase the number of female Parliamentarians.
