It's another exclusive one on one conversation with our insider Dan Rafael, he speaks with Amir Khan. This, as the former two division world champ announced his retirement this past weekend. Khan looks back on his 17 year pro career that saw him capture the WBA 140 lb. title in 2009. Khan would make five successful defenses against Dmitriy Salita, Paulie Malignaggi (in his American debut in Malignaggi’s hometown of New York), Marcos Maidana (in a rousing Las Vegas battle), Paul McCloskey and a fifth-round body-shot knockout of Zab Judah to take his IBF belt in a unification fight. Khan would move up to welterweight and go on to defeat opponents such as former world titleholders Luis Collazo, Devin Alexander and Chris Algieri but he would lose two more world title fights by knockout. He stepped up to middleweight (at a 155-pound catch weight) to challenge WBC champion Canelo Alvarez and got knocked out in spectacular fashion in the sixth round in 2016. A two-year layoff followed and in 2019, Khan was stopped in the sixth round challenging WBO welterweight titlist Terence Crawford. Khan notched his final win in his next fight when he knocked out former featherweight titlist Billy Dib in the fourth round in Saudi Arabia before ending a 2½-year layoff to face fellow former champ Brit Kel Brook. We're reminiscing about the biggest moments in boxing and of course, getting you ready for all of the important fights in the ring coming this weekend on the "Big Fight Weekend Podcast." And we enlisted the help of Hall of Fame boxing analyst Al Bernstein of Showtime to assist!
Host TJ Rives Is back to help set the table and he brings Al on first to talk not only how about the big win by Philadelphia unbeaten welterweight Jaron "Boots" Ennis last weekend in a fight that Al called on Showtime, but also reminisce about the Epic anniversary week of Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns in one of the great short fights in boxing history.
Al gives tremendous insight on that epic night April 15th, 1985, as the Middleweight champion of the world Hagler engaged the former World welterweight and Junior middleweight title holder Hearns in arguably the greatest first round in championship boxing history.
Hagler and Hearns bombed each other with one big punch after another and neither man would back down, much less go down, from all of the punishment. Eventually, Hagler wore down Hearns and quickly dropped him for good in the third round to retain his title. Hear Bernstein's stories about being on the call with legendary broadcaster Al Michaels and also about the atmosphere at the Caesars Palace outdoor Arena that night in 1985.
Then, T.J. is joined by analyst Carlos Toro of Carlos Toro Media, ( http://www.carlostoromedia.com ) who has great insight on today's fight game, including through his own website and fighter interviews on YouTube and Fightgame.com.
T.J. and Carlos also talk about the Hagler-Hearns memorable fight and the profound impact that bout had on boxing history then and now. Next, the guys then preview title fights on Saturday. That includes a Saturday afternoon battle U.S. time from Russia, with unbeaten, WBC/IBF Light Heavyweight champ, Artur Beterviev, in a fight that he should easily win with lightly regarded Adam Deines.
There is also a World Cruiserweight Championship fight in London, as Poland's Krzysztof Glowacki, is in action in a 12-round main event.
But, arguably the most intriguing battle is between unbeaten Californian 147 lb. contender, Vergil Ortiz, who has scored 16 Knockouts in his first 16 Pro fights taking on the former Junior Welterweight World Champ, Maurice Hooker.
