We talk about his path from road cycling to sports cardiology and advancing research to learn more about heart health in endurance athletes. Dr. Tso shares research on endurance sports and longevity, how heart rate data can inform training, and his own experiences as a marathoner! In this episode we talk to Abbie McNulty just a few days after she ran the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando! Abbie is a former Stanford Track & Field and Cross Country Athlete. After college, Abbie ran for the Reebok Boston Track Club (based in Charlottesville, VA) before making her way back to the Bay Area. Abbie overcame injuries and other challenges to toe the line at CIM this past December to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials in her first marathon. Abbie works full-time and trains with other talented runners in San Francisco.

In this episode we talk to Cal Calamia fresh off their win at the New York City Marathon! Cal is a marathoner, educator, poet, and an inclusivity activist for trans and nonbinary athletes. In November, Cal became the first trans nonbinary athlete to be granted a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone by the US Anti-Doping agency. This trailbreaking first is a complicated story that Cal generously shares with us. Cal recently got their masters in creative writing from USF and talks about the interplay between creativity and running. They share their work to get races to include nonbinary divisions and how important it is to make everyone feel recognized and celebrated and included!

In today’s episode we talk to Stanford athlete, Julia Heymach. Julia recently capped off an amazing season of Cross-Country and Track with an incredible run at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, OR where she was the only female collegiate to make the 1500m final. Julia set the PAC-12 Championship Record in her first 5,000m ever and now owns the Stanford Women’s 1500m record. We learned so much from Julia in this episode: from her positive outlook and approach to training and racing, to her perspective on how to find balance as an elite athlete. Julia has one more season left at Stanford and we can’t wait to cheer her on!

Donal was not an athlete in school but a friend convinced him to run a marathon and that race unlocked a desire to see what he was capable of. A desire that pushed him to run marathons for 20 years and now ultramarathons. We talk about overcoming challenges in training -- both mentally and physically. This week we’re talking to Kim Conley, two time Olympian, pro for New Balance, UC Davis alum, who is currently chasing down a spot on the 2021 Olympic team. Kim has secured qualifying times for the 2021 US Olympic trials in the 10K and 5K. We talk about her evolution from running XC in high school on a team with Sara Hall (then Bei) to graduating UC Davis feeling like she had unfinished business, to going all in on the 2012 track trials and having her breakthrough moment and becoming a New Balance sponsored athlete. Fiona had a whirlwind 2020, starting a Masters program at University of New Mexico, training but never competing because of the pandemic, then in December she ran the smashed the 10K Olympic trials qualifying standard of 32:25 with a time of 32:12.28 for the 11th-fastest time as an American collegian. This week we’re talking to Abbie Attwood, an athlete, sports nutritionist, endurance coach, and nutritional therapist. Abbie grew up with parents who ran the Boston marathon and calls Joan Benoit Samuelson a family friend. It wasn’t until college that Abbie found running. At first it was a coping mechanism, then it was a passion, and then that passion consumed her. Today, Abbie is a coach and clinical nutritionist, which is informed by her own experience with low energy availability coupled with celiac disease, Guillain-Barre, and a tumor on her pituitary gland. This week’s episode is with legendary run coach Greg McMillan. Greg is the head coach of McMillan Running and has coached all types of runners from Olympians to enthusiastic amateurs. Greg’s eponymous McMillan Running Calculator has been used by anyone who has ever asked the internet how fast they can run. Greg found running at an early age, cultivating his talent at the urging of cross country and basketball coaches, alike. This week’s episode is with Luke Wicker. Luke is a visual designer and copywriter who grew up across the pond in England. He developed a love for running after college and joined London’s Run Dem Crew. He quickly got pulled into running’s energetic culture and fell in love with training and racing. Running became a way to fuel his creativity and feel connected to his environment. Luke moved to San Francisco five years ago and joined the SWAP running team, coached by David Roche. Luke can be found on the trails and roads all over the Bay Area.

This week’s episode is with Cami Chapus. Cami is a native of Los Angeles, where she attended the same high school as Mimi (Go Wolverines)! Cami’s passion for running started when her mom encouraged her to join the XC team as a Freshman in High School. Byy the time she was recruited by Stanford she had competed internationally and had earned state and national titles in Track and XC. In college, Cami battled injuries and burn out, so she directed her energy and passion towards supporting her team and exploring other passions. Cami now lives in Telluride Colorado and is pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy, working with adaptive athletes.

A native of Georgia (born in Germany!), Angelica Swaim found her way to the Bay Area after spending seven years in the Navy falling in love with the sport of running while training on ships and racing on land. Angelica is a member of the Oiselle Volée and now runs everything from 5ks to 50ks! In this episode, we discuss Angelica’s identity as a runner both when she was in the Navy and now in the Medical Device industry, why she makes her way to the front of the start-line at trail races, and how she tackles new distances and why she prefers the longer distances. Massachusetts native, Holly Clarke started running in high school and ran at John Hopkins where she helped her cross country team win 2 NCAA DIII National Championships. After graduation, she moved out to the Bay Area and was encouraged to join a running team in the last hundred meters from the finish line of her first marathon. Holly joined the Impala Racing Team in 2015 and has been thriving ever since.

In this episode, Mimi talks to elite runner, Keira D'Amato. Keira is a woman of many talents. She's a realtor in Virgina, a mother of 2, a DJ (listen to Episode 244 of I'll Have Another With Lindsey Hein for more DJ talk), and the 7th fastest 35 years or older in the WORLD for the 5K! Keira is the most decorated runner of all time in American University history where she was coached by Matthew Centrowitz Sr. At American she was a 4-time All American and 11-time individual Patriot League champion. Keira placed 5th in the 2005 NCAA DI Cross Country Championships where she beat a few up and comers by the names of Molly Huddle and Amy Hastings. Keira placed 15th in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon trials and was selected to represent the US in the World Half Marathon Championships originally scheduled to take place in Poland this spring - now rescheduled for this fall. Earlier this week, Keira ran a 15:04 5K time trial on her home track. For reference, the Olympic standard is 15:10. Keira's 15:04 makes her the 7th fastest woman 35 or older all time in the world! In this episode we talk to Devon Yanko. Devon is a 2-time US Olympic Marathon Trials participant, a 5-time member of TEAM USA in the 100K World Champs. She’s won both the Javelina 100 miler and the Leadville 100 miler. She finished 3rd at Western States in 2016, where her race was featured in the documentary film, Life in a Day. Devon loves to chase Fastest Known Times (FKTs) and continues to challenge herself whether there’s an official race or not. Devon started a bakery called M.H. In this episode, Mimi and Brigitte talk to Jeannette Mathieu. Jeannette is a Radiology Resident at UCSF by way of Vanderbilt and grew . She runs for the Peninsula Distance Club (PDC) and recently ran the US Olympic Marathon Trials this past February. Jeannette qualified for the trials in her 2nd marathon at California International Marathon (CIM) in 2019.
