Deciding to leave the tenancy early is a stressful situation for everyone involved, not least of which the tenant looking to leave. There are a number of ways a landlord can avoid this situation, but it's a two way street.
Prime Campus has been fortunate to have tenants Keegan Wright, Alban Ribet, and Cosima Augusta return for another year with us. This group have agreed to share with us their secret on how to select a group of flatmates that will stand the test of time.

Hugo is one of our tenants studying civil engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. Hugo was able to share his whole process of how he fell in love with engineering from a young age, decided to move across the country to experience a new city and make new friends, how his passion for engineering made it easy for him to focus on his studies, get good grades and as of just a few weeks ago, land his dream job. I particularly liked Hugo's insight into how the University of Canterbury's Christchurch campus is possibly one of the most underrated universities in New Zealand.
Finn is in his second year of university, studying medicine. Health services run in Finn’s family with his father a doctor and mother a nurse. However, Finn’s advice was anything but following a set direction when it came to university, instead his feedback was to take your time and make the decision right for you, at the right stage in your life. Finn’s advice is invaluable, and comes from his personal and close friends’ experience. This podcast is a must listen for all people considering university study at anytime in the future.
Jaxson Tautala-Hanita, at our flat 27 Steps to Heaven, is studying a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Management and Politics, but what’s more interesting is how he came to the decision to study this course at the University of Otago in Dunedin. Jaxson’s university decision making process is very inclusive and inspiring, and I highly recommend this podcast to anyone who is struggling with the idea of attending university.
Will, very casually, said that in his first year he almost randomly decided to give Law study a go at, then proceeded to tell me that he is now studying second year law, having made it through a very tough cut off. Will is having a great time flatting, and seems to be one of those people that can quickly turn his hand to anything - including cooking! I think anyone stressing about their course selection should listen to this podcast and take some of Will’s advice.
Quinn is in his second year of a Physiotherapy degree at the University of Otago, in Dunedin, and has just started going on placement where he’s enjoying helping patients with pre & post opp surgery for osteoarthritis. Quinn is definitely a great role model for students looking to get the most out of their university and flatting experience, so would highly recommend hearing what he has to say on this podcast.
Finn is originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, but this year residing at our flat Honeydukes, while attending the University of Otago, studying law. Finn would have to be one of the closest tenants we have this year to an international student, given the border closures preventing international students from attending university in New Zealand. Finn’s unique perspective further highlights each of the key decision factors most prospective students go through when deciding on a university, course of study, and their flat. This episode is a must listen for those people currently in the process of making these decisions.
Sam is one of our tenants at the The Feisty Goat on Castle Street, and is studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences this year, having narrowly missed out of his preferred course of study, medicine. What I found most interesting from my talk with Sam was his self review on the balance of work and play he participated in last semester, and how going forward he will make changes to ensure that he has a more well rounded University experience.
Vaughn is in his last year of a bachelor of commerce degree with a double major in finance and management, which he is looking to apply to a career in consulting. Vaughn was able to share some great insight into a number of areas of student life, but what I found most interesting was his review of his decision to take an overseas GAP year. I highly recommend listening to Vaughn’s story, to take advantage of some of his learnings, from leaving home through to selecting his future career.
Alex is in his second year of flatting with us, and third and last year of university studying a Bachelor of Commerce, Majoring in Human Resources and Minoring in Tourism. Alex had some unique motivations for travelling the length of the country to study in Dunedin, from his home town of Whakatane, which I think anyone considering their location of study should listen to this podcast to discover.
This evening I spoke with Jamie Findlay, one of our tenants at our named flat, The Roost, who is in their second year of flatting with us, third year studying a Bachelor of Sport Science. Jamie would love to use his degree to work with professional athletes to enhance their performances, with his sports of interest being basketball and football. Jamie also shared some advice on University and flatting that he found most beneficial for him, which I know will help anyone considering studying away from home.
Jordy is one of our tenants at our named flat, Last Resort, on Castle Street, who shared lots of great insights into his year, but most importantly spoke about how he came to make the decision to study medicine in Dunedin, and how he and his flatmates decided to flat with one another in their second year of study. Jordy is another great role model for people looking to get the most from their university experience, and we look forward to following his studies and career into the future.
Like so often happens, I get so excited, and envious, when our tenants course of study and planned career ambitions align with goals I had during my time as a student. Ollie was no exception, from his University selection process, to his course of study, right through to his career goal, this podcast is a must for anyone with an entrepreneurial bent.
Miricara, had just come back from her 5 week mid-year break, during her second year bachelor of Law and Arts degree, when we recorded this podcast. I felt humbled to learn that Miricara is pursuing her degrees in the hope that she can support her family by helping her iwi, Tainui, with their land settlement process. Miricara has valuable experience and advice for those deciding on their university and flatmates.

Connor kept his options open in his approach to study, which paid off this year as he switched into a Management & Sociology double major at the University of Otago. Joe is one of our current Prime Campus tenants, who had a unique transition into university. Although a New Zealander by birth, Joe lived his entire life in China and Thailand, only returning to commence his law and politics degree at the University of Otago.
