1 Play Tight Preflop
Focus on playing only strong starting hands, especially in early positions-fold weak hands most of the time.
Typically, fold around 80% of your hands at a full table and prioritize pairs, broadways, and suited connectors on the button and cutoff.
2 Raise or Fold When First In When you are first to act in a pot, avoid limping (just calling the big blind). Instead, either raise with your selected hands or fold if the hand doesn't meet your standards.
3 Stop Calling Raises With Marginal
Hands
Avoid calling with weak or medium-strength hands after someone else has raised. Only call if you have a strong hand or a specific reason (like good pot odds).
4 Value Bet Relentlessly Against CallingStations
Most low stakes opponents will call too often with weak hands, so bet big with your strong hands. Focus on extracting the most value when you hit top pair or better.
5 Punish Over-Callers and Tight Players
Use bigger bet sizes to charge loose, passive players who chase draws.
Against tight players who rarely bluff, bet smaller and be willing to fold to big bets.
6 Double Barrel (Bet Flop and Turn)
Against Passive Players
If opponents call your flop bet, often follow up with another bet on the turn ("double barrel"), as many low stakes players will fold if you continue showing strength.
7 Three-Bet Light in Position
Occasionally re-raise ("three-bet") with hands such as suited connectors, suited aces, and small pairs from the button or cutoff against tight openers. Do not do this with junk hands.
8 Play More Hands in Late Position
Actively seek to play hands when sitting near the dealer button or cutoff, as acting last gives you more information and control over the pot size and your actions.
9 Exploit Weakness; Don't Bluff Too Much
Bluffing should be limited, as opponents call too often. Only bluff when you see clear signs of weakness and avoid elaborate moves, especially against calling stations.
10 Use Logical Systematic Decision
Making
Always analyze the situation: hand strength, position, previous action, and your opponent's tendencies.
Stick to your plan and don't let emotions or tilt affect your choices.
Review sessions afterward to improve your play.

5 Signs You’re The Fish
Think AK is a drawing hand
-If you get called by one person with an unpaired hand they miss the flop 2/3 of the time. Ace high is the best hand.
KK are ace magnets
-One ace will come on the flop about 21% of the time.
-Of that 21% your opponent won’t even have an Ace in their hand. Think of all of the hands people call raises with. Worse pairs. Suited connectors. Etc
Bet huge on AML flop with two suit with your AK cause you don’t wanna get sucked out on.
-Target worse hands that can call.
/On draw heavy boards bet big. But not because someone can suck out. Bet big because so many hands can continue for large sizing. Get paid.
You wait until you see a “safe turn card” before you start betting you top pair hand.
-You have no idea what a safe turn is. The 2 offsuit that you think is safe could give them a set. This is nonsensical thinking.
You “have to see it” or “if you got it you got it.”
If you can’t fold when beat then you are the fish.
Yes. They hit the flush. They aren’t suddenly bluffing the river when the flush comes in. Fold.

In no-limit hold’em, navigating a top pair hand out of position (OOP) on the flop with two opponents in position requires balancing aggression, protection, and pot control. The strategy hinges on flop texture, opponent tendencies, stack depths, and prior action. Below is a detailed breakdown of when to bet, check, check-raise, or bet-fold:
- Flop Texture
✅Dry Flops (e.g., K♦ 3♠ 2♥ – no draws, low connectivity)
-Bet 25%-33% pot .
-Dry board means they don’t have draws to continue
-They mostly have nothing or worse Kx
🚩Medium Flops (e.g., Q♣ 9♦ 4♣ several draws)
-Bet 50% pot for value and protection.
There are several draws. Open ended straight, gutshot straigh, and flush draws. With two opponents it’s fair that can have fair equity. Several turns make it dicey. We need to get value and charge those hands.
Options
Check-Raise?
-Against aggressive opponents. If checked to, an aggressive player may bet with air or draws. Check-raising punishes their bluffs and builds the pot.
Bet-Fold?
-If facing a raise, assess opponent tendencies. Fold vs tight players; call vs loose or bluffy opponents that will raise with draws.
🚫Wet Flops (e.g., J♠ T♦ 9 ♠ – middling cards, multiple draws, high connectivity)
-Bet 35% pot for protection.
-Wet boards threaten your equity with flush, straight, combo draws. Navigating turns and rivers will be difficult. Small bets and small pots is the objective.
Options
Check-Raise?
-Highly effective here. Let opponents bet their draws, then raise to charge maximum. Example: If you check, a player with Q9 or 98 may bet. If you are 100bb deep check raising to get it all in against these hands heads up is profitable. The danger is raising into the nuts. Or very high equity hands.
Bet-Fold?
-Avoid unless facing a large raise from a passive player (indicates strong made hands like two-pair/sets/straights).
-
Opponent-Specific Adjustments
-Passive Opponents:
Bet smaller (50-60% pot) for value. They’ll rarely bluff-raise, so bet-fold only vs large raises.
-Aggressive Opponents:
Check-raise wet boards to exploit their bluffs. On dry boards, bet and call down if raised (they may have air).
-Loose calling stations:
Bet larger (75%+ pot) for Max value. They’ll chase draws, so punish them.
-Tight Players:
Bet smaller and bet-fold to raises (they rarely bluff). -
Stack Depth Adjustments
- Short Stacks ( Bluff:
Top pair is vulnerable; prioritize betting for value charging draws over bluffing. - Leverage Positional Disadvantage:
Use check-raise to flip the positional script in the right configuration. - Adjust to Player Types:
Exploit nits with small bets, calling stations with large bet sizes, maniacs with check-raises.
-Avoid Hero Calls OOP:
When raised, lean toward folding unless you have a read.
Top pair OOP is a marginal hand in multi-way pots. Play it aggressively on dry boards, cautiously on wet ones, and always respect raises from tight opponents.

Let’s break down the concept of basic strategy in poker and why it’s the foundation of becoming a winning player.
What’s Basic Strategy?
In games like blackjack, there’s a “basic strategy” that players memorize to minimize losses. For example, in blackjack, just by memorizing and following basic strategy can reduce your expected loss from 3-6% (if you’re just winging it) to 1% or less. Card counters take it even further by adjusting their play based on the cards left in the deck, allowing them to make smarter decisions and bet bigger when the odds are in their favor.
By keeping count of the cards and knowing the composition of the remainder of the deck, this allows them to do things like modify the basic strategy when the count says you should stand on hands you would normally hit. Or split tens which you would normally never do. Or bet 3x or 5x or 9x your base bet.
And if you happened to be at a table that accidentally flashed their down card 20% of the time you could massively deviate from basic strategy to crush even more.
Poker has its own version of basic strategy, and it starts with preflop charts. These charts tell you which hands to play (and how to play them) based on your position at the table. Unlike blackjack, where basic strategy still leaves you at a slight disadvantage, mastering poker’s basic strategy can turn a losing player into a break-even or even slightly winning player—fast.
Why Preflop Charts Matter
Preflop charts are like your poker GPS. They guide you on:
- Which hands to open (e.g., raising from under the gun vs. the cutoff).
- When to fold, call, or raise based on your position and the action before you.
By sticking to these charts, you avoid making costly mistakes early in the hand. For example, you’ll know not to play a weak hand from early position or to raise aggressively with strong hands in late position. This alone can transform your game from losing to break-even or better.
Now let’s put all of this into perspective and build a plan around it. I’ll use another analogy, cooking, to help us develop this plan.
Poker Basics: Build Your Game Like a Pro (Even If You’re Just Starting Out)
Alright, let’s simplify poker strategy so you can actually remember it and use it. Imagine you’re learning to cook: you need to master the recipe first before you start improvising. Poker’s the same way. Here’s your step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Learn the “Recipe” (Preflop Charts)
In poker, preflop charts** are your recipe book. They tell you:
- What hands to play (e.g., “Should I raise Ace-King from early position?”).
- How to play them (fold, call, raise).
Why this works:
Most losing players hemorrhage money by playing too many weak hands. Preflop charts fix that. Memorize them, and you’ll instantly:
✅ Stop bleeding chips with junk hands.
✅ Make fewer “What was I thinking?!” mistakes.
Start with tight ranges (play fewer hands) until you’re comfortable. Think of it like training wheels—they keep you safe while you learn. What range you should play from each position can easily be found by searching for poker charts online. There are many places with free resources. Just choose one that is tailored to live game and not GTO ranges or online ranges.
Adjust to Your “Kitchen” (Table Dynamics)**
Once you’ve memorized the basics, it’s time to adapt. Poker isn’t played in a vacuum—your opponents matter!
Example Adjustments:
- If everyone’s folding too much → Loosen up (play more hands).
- If the table’s aggressive → Tighten up (only play strong hands).
- If someone’s a calling station → Bluff less, value bet more.
Key Insight: The best players aren’t robots. They tweak their strategy like chefs adjusting seasoning—a little more salt here, less spice there.
Master the “Knife Skills” (3-Betting and 4-Betting)
This is where pots get big, and mistakes get costly. This allows you slice and dice your opponents stacks at will.
- 3-bet = Re-raise before the flop (e.g., someone raises, you re-raise).
- 4-bet** = Re-raise a 3-bet (aggressive moves for big pots).
Why This Matters:
If you only 3-bet with premium hands (like Aces or Kings), savvy players will exploit you. Mix in some bluffs (like suited connectors) to keep opponents guessing.
Simple Basic Rule: Start with a basic 3-bet range (10% of hands) and expand as you get comfortable. Good charts can help you refine this with 3b and 4b ranges you can memorize as well.
Study Like a Scientist
Poker rewards homework. Here’s how to practice:
1. Drill Preflop Charts: Use apps or flashcards (10 minutes/day).
2. Review Hands: After each session, ask: “Did I follow my ranges?”
3. Spot Opponent Leaks: Notice patterns (e.g., “Player X always folds to 3-bets”).
Think of It Like Lifting Weights:
You wouldn’t skip leg day and expect to run a marathon. Don’t skip preflop study and expect to win.

GTO or PTO?
GTO - game theory optimal. Learning how to play in such a way that nobody can exploit you.
Downsides. Most people that try to learn it don’t. Because it’s very hard. And even those that come close don’t understand how to deviate to exploit others. So they are winning the minimum most of the time.
PTO - Population Theory Optimal or Pool Theory Optimal. Learning the habits and tendencies of the pool of players you play in and creating strategies against them as a group and individually to maximally exploit them.
Downsides: if any of them ever smarten up and decided to exploit you getting out of line they could wreck you. This just isn’t going to happen at 1/2 or 1/3 stakes. And if anyone is capable of doing it you will know who they are very quickly and not fall prey to that.
Online coaching gurus are doing this with databases bought or collected from online play. It’s called mass data analysis or MDA.
In live play you don’t have a database other than the one you collect in your brain by playing. So you can’t get it by either playing for many many years. Or by being taught by someone who has.

How To Learn Quickly
Identify spots that have most impact first. Devote all your time on them

1.Why does the solver recommend folding AQo to 3-bets?
A solver often recommends folding Ace-Queen offsuit (AQo) to a 3-bet due to several factors tied to game theory optimal (GTO) play, equity, and positional dynamics. But there are even more considerations when playing against your average low stakes player.
A. Equity Against 3-Bet Ranges
When running AQo in an equity calculator against typical low-stakes 3-bet ranges, it shows approximately 36% equity. This is not ideal when facing a 3-bet, as AQo is often dominated by stronger hands like AK, QQ+, and even suited Aces. If you are out of position, this problem becomes even worse, as it is difficult to realize the full equity of your hand. Playing out of position adds complexity, reduces profitability, and increases the likelihood of making costly mistakes .
B. Reverse Implied Odds
AQo has significant reverse implied odds, meaning it can lead to costly situations when dominated by hands like AK or AQ suited. This risk is amplified in multi-street play, as committing chips with a dominated hand often results in losing larger pots .
C. Positional Disadvantages
When out of position, AQo struggles to realize equity effectively. Frequent limping signals inexperience or fear of aggression. Passive players rarely raise, preferring to call or limp, which makes it hard for them to build pots or protect their equity. This playstyle is exploitable with aggression.
C.Not Buying in for a Full 100 Big Blinds
Short-stacked players who buy in for less than the table maximum often lack confidence or a proper bankroll strategy. This limits their ability to play effectively postflop and makes them more predictable.
3.How should I adjust my play when facing different bet sizes post-flop?
In live low-stakes no-limit hold’em cash games, players often telegraph the strength of their hands through their bet sizing. Here’s a concise breakdown of how you can exploit this tendency effectively:
A.Responding to Large Bets: Large bets typically indicate very strong hands. Against players who follow this pattern, you can confidently fold marginal hands, minimizing losses in situations where you are likely to be beaten.
B.Responding to Small Bets:
- With Strong Hands: When opponents bet small, indicating weakness, capitalize by simply calling or occasionally raising for value. This traps them into continuing with weaker holdings.
- With Weak Hands: You can use small bets as an opportunity to bluff with hands that have no showdown value. A well-timed raise can force them to fold weak holdings, allowing you to win the pot without a strong hand.
Recognizing and exploiting betting patterns helps you control the game flow. For instance, when opponents telegraph weak hands with small bets, you can either take the pot with aggressive raises or extract maximum value from your stronger hands by avoiding over-raising, which might scare them off.
4.How do I balance my range to remain unpredictable to observant opponents?
Unless you have observant studied players about table it’s isn’t necessary to spend much time worrying about balance. You will make far more money focusing on exploiting the weak players massive mistake. While good players would adjust to your exploits, making you exploitable, your average low stakes players never will adjust.
5.What adjustments should I make when playing against calling stations?
A. Value bet aggressively. Bet all of your top pair hands, solid second pair hands with good kickers, and extract values from their weak hands and draws.
B. Use large bet sizings with your strong value hands. Instead of betting 1/2 pot or 2/3 pot, go larger and bet nearly pot. Versus some calling stations you can even get called by over bet sizings.
C. Don’t bluff. And only semi bluff with your strongest draws with the most equity.
D. Throw flop C-bet frequencies out the window. Only C-bet when you have a value hand.
C. Avoid tilt when they draw out on you. A calling station that is running hot can make for a very frustrating session.
D. Don’t pay them off. When they change from passive calling, to betting or raising, only call them when you have the most nutted hands. Fold everything else.

1- The bigger the effective stack the better hand you need to stack off
2- When playing low stakes and facing a large river bet, if you are down to trying to count blockers to justify a call, you should fold
3- If you think about poker in terms of how many hands you win rather than how much money you profit, then you are thinking about poker incorrectly.
4- Expect to be only marginally profitable long term from early positions. Even with good holdings. And knowing this, let that guide you as to what you should even be playing early.

But that’s what your opponents are also doing. We need to be doing more. Taking pots without hands when possible. Getting max value when we do make hands. Losing the minimum when boards become unfavorable. Folding when clearly beat. Etc
7- Suited connectors are pretty. They are not profitable from early position. And break even or slightly profitable from late position. Overall from all positions most likely break even or losing when played correctly by really good players. Not a really good player? Then you are losing with them.

If someone raises 20, someone flats, and you can 3b and gets heads up with PFR you now have 20 dead money in the middle. It’s the same as PFR have to put 40 in the pot to your 20. Or another way is if you are a 2/1 dog if you were only heads up and they put half the money in and you put half the money in, you are in a losing spot. But with the 20 dead money in, you are 2/1 against. But there is 2 (20) in the pot to your 1 (20) in the pot. 2/1. This is a break even to profitable spot. And any time they both fold you auto profit. This is why 3b with playable hands is so important. When there is a middle player flatting.

Most poker players know about identifying Nits, tags and lags at the poker table. Buy here are 5 more player types you need to identify and exploit for max profits.
1) Street Poker Player
Always looking for reasons to bluff or steal pots. They aren’t fundamentally sound but they have an instinct for poker. When someone is weak etc. Can be tough to play if you let them move you off your game.
2) The Button clicker
Takes a while to identify. But they will bet for no reason. Raise for no reason. All in for no reason.
3) Limp it all great and small
They limp AA and 22. You will run into monsters with them and not know it until you identify them. You can’t over play hands vs them.
4 and 5) Limp fold / Limp call
The first limps any two but folds often to raises. The latter limps often and never folds to raises.

In a $1/$2 game, Hero raises to $10 on the button holding K♠️K♦️, and a less experienced player in the big blind calls with Q♦️J❤️. The flop creates a $20 pot, with a board of J♠️9♣️2❤️2♦️5❤️.
Let’s look at four different betting scenarios to determine our optimal strategy for making the most money in the hand:
1.In Scenario #1, Hero bets 33% of the pot on the flop, checks the turn, and bets 66% of the pot on the river. This yields a final pot of $53.80.
2.Scenario #2 involves a 33% pot bet on the flop, followed by 66% bets on both the turn and river. This results in a final pot size of $125.20.
3.In Scenario #3, Hero bets 50% on the flop, 66% on the turn, and 66% on the river, leading to a final pot of $169.
4.Scenario #4 Hero decides to go big and bet 80% pot bets on the flop, turn, and river, resulting in a final pot size of $246.
Comparing the outcomes:
•Scenario #1: +$55
•Scenario #2: +$125
•Scenario #3: +$170
•Scenario #4: +$246
If the villain calling range is nearly inelastic, the probabilities of these scenarios are roughly equal. You will find that the really bad low stakes players don’t think about how big the bet is within reason. They either like their hand and are calling or they aren’t. It’s binary.
Now let’s look at how this affects our bottom line if they don’t always call all bets.
If you compare the first lowest betting strategy with the last highest betting strategy, the latter makes us 4.5 times as much money. So even if our villains only call us down 1/4th of the time we make the same amount as betting small and getting called down 100% of the time. And if they even call us down 1/3 of the time now we are making more money than the smallest bet sizing getting called 100% of the time.
This is most players biggest fear. We don’t want them to fold. But as you can see , even when getting more folds we are still making more money long term.

Can you explain effective stack size to me
The lowest stack involved in the hand. If you have $1000 and your opponent has $250 then you are both playing a $250 stack. The other $750 in your stack is irrelevant.
Why does it matter? Hands that need implied odds. Even tho your stack may be huge if theirs is small then there may not being enough to justify implied odds
Preflop raise sizing. If a 3b will be for a large portion of the effective stack then shoving or folding becomes your only options.

Do you have a quick and dirty checklist or sequence to rapidly assess playing styles of your opponents? I have no trouble at all categorizing people I've played with dozens of times, but in a new venue, or facing new players, it would help to have a system.
The easiest and quickest tell on a player is to see one raise offsuit broadways or gappers from EP1 and 2
If I see someone raise QT off utg when the hand goes to showdown, I will now look to 3b them and try to play lots of hands with them heads up. Of course your position to their matters.
The other easy classification is someone who never raises preflop. Ever. You don’t need a label other than bad player. In fact we should start out labeling players and good or bad. That gets us up and running quick. Then over time more specific labels.

I know it's low limit so bluffs should be very limited but what questions should we be asking ourselves before trying a bluff on the turn or later?
Does this player ever fold turns or are they a calling stating that goes to the river with bottom pair?
Are they capped at having a very weak hand!
Can I get a fold cheaply enough to make it a profitable bet. If you bet half pot you need them to fold 1/3 of the time. 2/3 pot 40% folds. Full pot 50% folds. Etc.

Difference in deep stack and normal
Deep stacked poker played well invokes every aspect of poker. Value, calling odds, bluffs, tons of pressure and most importantly big mistakes that cost big.
If you only have 100bb and make an error for your stack it’s not that catastrophic. But if you are 600bb deep and make the same error it’s a crazy bad error.
Large Pocket pairs go down in value. Hands that can crack big pockets pairs of people who can’t fold go way up in value.

Knowing when to call it a day. Run bad etc. minimizing those drawdowns.
You should leave any time you are tilted and making bad decisions. Even if you have only lost one buy in.
I personally have a 3 buy in loss rule. But during bad downswings I may make it two buy ins. I’ll also play shorter sessions.
As soon as you have lost a couple sessions back to back you should be sharing notes on hands with another winning player. The more we lose the worse we play. We need independent eyes to make sure we aren’t now playing bad as well.

Suited connector 10 commandments
1 - play them in games where it’s deep and vs players who will stack off with over pairs
2 - open raise them in games with tight players behind that will fold a fair amount to raises
3 - Play only in late position
4 - Mix raises and calls preflop based on player type, stack depth etc. Only Call if on the button. All other positions always raise or fold. Mix based on suits or how good you are running.
5 - Don’t raise if more than 3 limpers. It becomes too expensive. Either fold if not on button. Or call on button. When you do call be very aware of reverse implied odds of getting over flushed.
6 - Fold to 3b when OOP. Call in position if deep enough.
7 - Release when you only catch one pair
8 - Continue aggressively with draws that are massive
9 - bluff to win the pot when you can because of position
10 - never 4 bet with suited connectors except on rare occasions where you have some strong blocker like KQ suited. Even then it’s not advised except against the loosest aggro opponents and when your image is tight and invincible.

Suited connector basics
1. Position Awareness: Always try to play suited connectors in later positions, as it's important to have as much information as possible before making your move.

Understanding Pot Odds: Be aware of the pot odds. Suited connectors have high implied odds, but if the cost to play isn't justified by the potential payout, consider folding. The deeper the effective stacks the better. 15 to 1 in position. 20 to 1 out of position.

Player Tendencies: Consider the tendencies of your opponents. Suited connectors fare better against opponents who will pay you off with AA or TPTK when you hit your hand. The best players in the game can make folds and get away from hands. These are the type of players to play suited connectors against vs a raise.

Board Texture: Post-flop, be aware of the board texture. Suited connectors are aiming for straights, flushes, or combo draws, so evaluate how well the board matches with these objectives. Don’t pile money in the pot because you flopped 3rd pair.

Post-flop Aggression: Don't be overly aggressive post-flop if you miss. If you have the betting lead you can continuation bet favorable flops for your range. You can also barrel strong draws and combo draws. It's better to let the hand go if you don't flop big hands or draws or if the board is unfavorable.

Hand Reading: Try to put your opponents on a range of hands. This will help you evaluate whether your flush or straight is likely to be the best hand if you hit. One of the pitfalls of suited connectors is getting over flushed. Being aggressive preflop, and post flop on favorable boards helps to get better flush draws to fold.

Balancing Your Range: Include suited connectors in your range to balance it and not be overly predictable to your opponents. You don’t have to do this from every position. But in late positions they can be added into your raising range and will help keep all players guessing. Even the good ones.

Bluffing: Use suited connectors as bluffing tools when the board texture allows for it and you have position. This allows you to win more often without hitting a straight or flush. For example, if you flop a straight or flush draw and are in a position when you had to call the flop instead of raise it, you can raise turns when middle or bottom card pairs. You will pick up some extra folds in this spot and you still have your straight and flush out when it doesn’t work. Make sure it’s a board where villain is capped at one pair.

Today’s poker strategy is a primer on playing suited connectors in low stakes cash games. All links mentioned in the show are at the bottom of this ⬇️
Introduction
* What are suited connectors?
Two cards in sequential order of the same suit. 7❤️6❤️ etc
* Why are suited connectors so important?
They add deception to our preflop raising range, they have playability across multiple streets, they are easy to get away from when they miss, and they can stack opponents with great implied odds.
* What are the different ways to play suited connectors?
Primarily you should be aggressive with suited connectors from late positions. Avoid them from early position. You can also play them passively in certain situations preflop , mainly from the button.
Playing suited connectors preflop
* When should you play suited connectors preflop?
You want to mainly play suited connectors from late position and for a raise. You can do this over one or two limpers and use your position to win postflop a lot when called.
You can also use them to 3b later position pfr when they have a wider range. This allows you take it down preflop, flop big hands postflop , or use your position to win a portion of the time.
* How should you play suited connectors against different types of opponents?
Let’s assume you are on the button with 7❤️6❤️.
Vs a raise by a nit you should just call if stacks are deep enough to reward you when you hit against their very condensed range of hands. Raising them preflop would be bad because they open so tight they are never folding and will likely be coming over the top.
Vs a standard thinking player who has a more standard opening range you can 3b this spot when they are opening from layer positions at the table like LJ, HJ, CO etc
Vs a LAG you can mix calls or 3b. Preferably 3b when stacks are deep and you can punish their wide range on many flops even when you miss.
- What are some common mistakes to avoid when playing suited connectors preflop?
Always calling and going super multi-way. You open yourself to reverse implied odds against better straights.
Not 3b when the circumstances are right.
Not raising with them preflop.
Trying to play them too much from EP like utg and utg1 etc
Playing suited connectors postflop
* How should you play suited connectors after the flop?
You should be aggressive with big draws especially when the board doesn’t favor your opponent. Many times you can just win when they cbet on bad boards for their range and take it down. On boards like this hands as weak as gutshots and top pair with back doors etc are good.
In boards where your opponent has a nutted range it doesn’t make much sense to raise as you never win with a fold.
Raise and playyour best draws very aggressively. Pairs and flush draws. Straight and flush draws. Etc.
- What are some common mistakes to avoid when playing suited connectors postflop?
Always calling with draws. Especially when multi-way. This allows better draws to come along too.

Can you give advice on how to play AK? I am one of those people who hates this hand. It almost never hits and I feel like I just lose money playing it.
1- AK is a premium hand. It is the nut no pair. It removes half the combinations of AA and KK.
2- Play it aggressively. Always open raise and 3b preflop. You want to be heads up. 3 ways at worst.
3- Continuation bet a wide variety of “safe” flops. Big small small unconnected. Medium small small unconnected. And big draws like gutshot to broadway. Nut flush draws. Overs with the backdoor nut flush draw.
4- Keep barreling turn when you hit. When you pick up a card that gives you more outs . Or when a card hits that is in your range.
Most hands are not pairs. Your opponent will miss the flop most of the time. You need to pick up your fair share of the flops when you don’t hit your A or K. Odds are your A high is still the best hand. Playing AK and only hoping you get top pair on the flop is the wrong way to play this hand.

This is my home room and although I travel I lot I spend about half the year playing here. Had an issue one time and poker manager called me at home to talk about it. Won’t find that most anywhere.
It’s a dog track built in the 1950s or so. So not the most modern. But it’s very friendly. Great action. Professional staff. Good dealers on average.

The following analysis assumes that you know the player you are in the hand with and they always have the flush. If it’s a player that can bluff a 3 suit turn then there is much more involved. But all too often at low stakes it’s just rarely a player bluffing when the turn brings the flush.
When you have a set vs two pair on the turn which brings in a flush, and it’s very clear your opponent has a flush, how good of shape are you in?
22% with a set
9% two pair
If it’s an all in and the pot isn’t laying you 4 to 1 with your set or 9 to 1 with your two pair then it’s a fold.
And this is the biggest mistake I see at low stakes. Players calling with the two pair because “I can still get a full house” while being oblivious to the pot odds.
For this reason it’s safe to say to just always fold two pair hands on the turn vs what is an obvious flush.
We can continue with sets though.
If you have money behind then you can call with your set getting 3 to 1 as long as you feel that you can get one more bet of that size or more on the river when you boat up with set.
With a two pair hand it’s much more dire. Getting 3 to 1 as an example your need to have 5 more bets of that size you are calling left behind and know your opponent will pay when you hit.
For simplicity sake, the two pairs are just always folds. So much so you can just assume it. For sets you can spend the time doing the math and evaluating.

Lodge review
Bomb Pots, H-E-B, Big Red
The Lodge owns the poker market in Austin. There is a small room nearby that has one table on average running. And a couple more within 15 to 30 minutes. But other than TCH they all are one or two table rooms.
Run very well.
The poker atlas system allows for getting on list up to one hour ahead of arrival. This lets them know when an influx of players is coming so they always have dealers on standby to open new tables. I don’t think I ever waited more than 5 minutes for a seat other than the early morning hours between 7am and 11am.
11 per hour to play. No discounts for paying up front.
They don’t come to harass you at the table if you haven’t paid your time in advance like many Texas rooms. You settle up with them when they leave as they track your playing time.
Discount. Weekdays from 8am to 11am they let you play free. Me and my pro friend did this every weekday the first two weeks. The games are so bad it’s not worth the $11 hourly savings. Can you profit? Sure. But it won’t be much per hour. Better to just play later when the games are their best.
Dealers.
I’ve come up with a way to score dealers moving forward in my room reviews. Every dealer than personally deals to me I’ll rate 1 to 10. And i take notes. At the end of my trip all add ill of them together and divide by number of dealers for an average score. The lodge scored very high with a 8.4 average.
Michael “all in” loud as hell. Talks nonstop to players slows the games way down. I was too his right and he was yelling across the room at someone right into my ear. Killing me. I’m not a fan of loud dealers or dealers who talk too much. He is both. But he is a very good dealer technically.
N. Won’t say full name. Worst dealer in the room. And the only bad dealer really. Seemed relatively new. Tried to talk and do conversation which he isn’t ready for. He need to just concentrate on the make. He really was a problem in bomb pots.
Floor / Brush
I found them all to do their jobs very well. One particularly interesting thing is the floor can pull up camera for any table right on their phone (or perhaps it’s a poker room phone or device) and review a hand right there in real time. Had this happen twice during my month of playing there and it really sped up getting rulings that required reviewing video.
Players
I was traveling with a pro grinder friend. We discussed the lodge 1/2 players at great length. After a month this is out conclusions.
There are a ton of solid players, good regs and pros.
There are a ton of nits.
There aren’t a lot of people punting massively.
The gamblers seem to be made up of a lot of players who Save the gamble for bomb pots. This isn’t optimum for the holdem hands. We saw it time and time again. Bad players who didn’t gamble much in holdem. And would just punt massively in bomb pots. If you are planing to play here, spend lots of time getting good at double board PLO bomb pots.
Players who play bad but leave when down a couple buy ins or up a couple. Only one really deep game in 19 days (sessions 16) I was amazed how many days I’d be 4 or 6 hours into a session and there may be one stack over 500. Everyone else still in the 200 to 400 range. This is so much different than nearly any other 1/2 game I play.
Hands per hour.
One hour between the two bombs and a dealer floor player thing we had 16 hands in an hour.
Saw many bomb pot hands that took 10 minutes. Many. On average it’s probably 5 or 6 minutes.
This one dealer (Nick) who was the worst in the room miscalculated a split bomb pot. Two hands later two players start discussing it and he stops dealing mid hand while they work it out. Not only did the damn bomb pot take 8 minutes. It was another two minutes discussion during a hand I had the betting lead in.
Food Drinks etc
Water and soft drinks are free.
No food other than chips and peanuts and beef jerky etc.
They sell beer. BYOB liquor and wine.
You can bring your own food. Or order Door Dash.
Security.
I always felt safe there. They have anywhere from 1 to 3 armed security in there depending on time of day. They have a station with a screen of all the security cam views and are always checking it. I assume they would walk you to your car if you asked. I never did.
Overview.
This is a massive room and games are always running. You won’t ever have to wait long for a seat.
Player pool is better on average than nearly any other 1/2 player pool I’ve played anywhere. It’s beatable for sure. But I’d expect my hourly to be 1/2 what it normally is when combining the players and the bomb pot effect.
One aside. Many many of the locals who have been playing there from day one world often lament how much better it was before Doug Polk and company took over. They talked about the games being softer. How free breakfast was served. How every night was a different dinner. Like taco night. Pizza night. Lasagne night. Etc etc. So while the room is massive and generating more income for the owners I’m sure, the long time locals missed the good old days of softer games and more being given back by the owners.

When you log 50 hours a month you get $500 cash redeemable the following month
I’ve done some math and these comes out better than the 6/2 rake at a lot of poker rooms in Florida with the kick backs. Especially if you normally eat food while you okay. It’s way better than rooms like Jacksonville that take a piece even if there isn’t a drop which is egregious. Derby is no flop no drop.
You are encouraged to play solid tight aggressive poker because of the rake. And play bigger pots. Consider a $35 pot 7 will come out. That’s 23%
To get the full rake to reasonable you’d need a $200 pot at which point they are taking 5%.
I founds this wasn’t a problem as my $25 raises over one or two limpers was usually called by a couple of players.
I found that most players played at least $500 and higher with the occasional &200 stack sitting in.
I didn’t play the 1/2 game but a dealer was explaining it to a player at the table.
1/2 has an instant high hand payout as well for quads but it’s only $150. If you have logged 60 hours that month and you hit then you get double. $300.
No free drinks. No food comps.
Cons.

Chips are horrible. 5 different designs and colors.
Several days with 8, and 10 tables only one waitress. Took forever to get drink orders. Jessica was amazing tho. She did a 14 hour shift one day and I was there entire 14 hours and she worked her ass off.
Charge you for the entire meal if you just order the protein with no sides. My first two days I ordered only the chicken or the fish no sides they cut a small discount. The last day , Jessica the same waitress , said I put it in as $8.95 and they put it though but said to tell you from now own you pay the full meal price of $16 for the meal. Even if you only get the meat.
Way to nickel and dime people. But it’s not just them. Lots of rooms do this. But for the record. It’s dumb. Cut carnivores a break. It’s less work for cooks and less food you are sending out.
One person can over ride bomb pot during promo hours.
Staff cleared our entire table one day with transfers.
Didn’t pay high hand because floor didn’t make it to table until 2 minutes after high hand period ended. Dealer confirmed it happened before. Unacceptable

No limit Texas holdem is a complex and challenging game that requires a lot of skill and strategy to master. There is no simple answer to how to win, but there are some general tips that can help you improve your game. Here are some of them:
Play fewer hands and play them aggressively. Don’t be the first player to limp (just call the big blind) preflop, as this gives away your hand strength and invites other players to join the pot. Instead, raise with your strong and playable hands, and fold the rest. This way, you can win the pot before the flop or put pressure on your opponents after the flop.
Semi-bluff aggressively with your draws. A semi-bluff is a bet or raise with a hand that has a chance to improve on later streets, such as a flush draw or a straight draw. By semi-bluffing, you can either win the pot right away or hit your draw and win a big pot. Semi-bluffing also disguises your hand, making it harder for your opponents to put you on a range.
Fast-play your strong hands to build the pot and make more money. When you have a very strong hand, such as a set, a straight, or a flush, you want to get as much money in the pot as possible. Don’t slow-play or check back your strong hands, as this gives your opponents a chance to catch up or get a free card. Bet and raise big with your strong hands and make your opponents pay to see more cards.
Defend your “creative” hands you raise more when in position and never when out of position. So you raised 98 suited from the lowjack and the cutoff 3b you 3.5x. Sure your hand is pretty but it’s going to be very hard to win from out of position. Basically you will need to nail the flop which is very hard to do. On the other hand , if you raised the same hand from the button and the big blind 3b you, you can call in position because there are more ways you can win given your positional advantage.
* Fold when you’re unsure. One of the most common mistakes that beginners make is calling too much when they are not sure if they have the best hand or not. This can be very costly in the long run, as you will lose more money than you win by chasing marginal hands or hoping for a miracle card. If you are facing a big bet or raise and you don’t have a clear reason to call, it’s better to fold and save your chips for a better spot.

I traveled for 18 months all over the country in an RV. I bought it just for that. Recently sold it. It was amazing. Many casinos will let you stay in parking lot in designated areas making accommodations free. Many won’t.
Now I do hotels.
Bankroll safety in new areas
Personal safety
I use a bank that has branches all over. So you can travel without a lot of money. And withdraw when you arrive at the city you are playing.
When my bank isn’t there I divide bankroll up. Hide and store in separate locations. Hopefully if one gets robbed others will survive.
Don’t flash money at the table.
Don’t dress like you are wealthy
Park as close to entrance as possible.
If they offer cart rides to vehicle take it.
If you have a huge night and it draws attention ask for security escort

Pocket sixes in no limit hold'em can be a tricky hand to play, as it falls in the middle range of pocket pairs. I find that people are very confused about the best way to play small pocket pairs like sixes profitably. Here are some general rules of thumb to follow:
- Position is crucial: Your position at the table plays a significant role in how you should play pocket sixes. If you are in early position in a full ring game that is 8 or 9 handed, it's generally better to fold them since you don't want to risk too much money playing out of position. There are far too many people left to act who can wake up with hands that have you dominated. And even if they have a hand you are flipping with like overcards it will be incredibly difficult to realize your equity playing out of position.
In middle or late position, you can play them if the action has folded to you. You always want to enter the pot with a raise with this and all other playable hands when the action has folded to you. The one spot you can just call with your pocket sixes is on the button. You are guaranteed to be last to act post flop and can often take pots even if you don’t hit your set or the board has over cards when it is checked to you.

Look for value: Pocket sixes are not a premium hand, so you need to look for opportunities to get value from them. One way to do this is by playing them in multi-way pots where you can potentially hit a set and win a big pot. This will be primarily by just calling with them on the button and occasionally on the big blind. When you play pocket sixes multi-way like this you are essentially set mining. This means it’s very important that the other players in the hand have deep stacks along with your own stack. To insure you can play this hand profitably make sure the effective stacks are at least 15 times the amount of money you have to call to see the flop.

Consider the table dynamics: The way your opponents are playing can affect your decision to play pocket sixes. If your opponents are playing tight like in some early morning live cash games or online, you may want to try to steal blinds or make a small raise to see a cheap flop. If they are playing loose and aggressive, it might be better to fold and wait for a better spot unless you are in position which great implied odds to try and hit a set as mentioned before.

Pay attention to stack sizes: Your stack size and your opponents' stack sizes can also play a role in how you play pocket sixes especially in a tournament setting. If you have a short stack, it might be better to shove all-in pre-flop to avoid playing out of position post-flop. If it folds to you in late position and you only have 15 big blinds then shoving all in is likely the best play. On the other hand If your opponents have short stacks and you are in late position, you can use your pocket sixes to put pressure on them and try to steal their blinds by making small raises.

Be prepared to fold: As with any hand, it's important to be prepared to fold pocket sixes if the situation warrants it. If you face a big raise or re-raise, or if the flop doesn't bring any help, it's better to cut your losses and move on to the next hand.
Pocket sixes can be a challenging hand to play in no limit hold'em, but with the right approach, you can turn them into a profitable hand. Remember to consider your position, look for value, pay attention to table dynamics and stack sizes, and be prepared to fold when necessary. By following these guidelines, you'll be able to make the most of your pocket sixes and increase your chances of winning at the poker table.

Most of the time when you are in position to other players you will be 3 betting preflop. Calling is mainly for the button and big blind. And in live games with large bet sizing preflop not a lot of big blind calling.
In position as the preflop 3 bettor you have represented a very strong range so you get to continue more liberally across a lot of flops.
Basically any flop with a broadway card or even two broadways.
Flops with big medium little cards
Nearly all 9 high flops that aren’t well connected
Flops with flush draws, back doors and overs, and even gutters when it’s a good looking flop for strong ranges.
The boards you want to check back a fair amount are low connected.

Now let’s say we are on the river. Without knowing any cards by either player involved, what is your equity?

How to determine EV as a dollar amount.
60/40 ten times to demonstrate in 100 pot
6 times you win 100 or 600
4 times you lose 100 or -400
600-400=200
We did it 10 times so divide 200 by 10 and it’s 20. 20 EV.
So formula for each hand is easy. Win percent as total of pot minus lose percent as total of pot equals your EV.
Easy with 100. Harder with large odd numbers.
There is a hack to deal with large numbers. And it helps to visualize. For me it does. But perhaps this is the simplest hack.
60-40 = 20
So 20% of the pot is yours.
20% of 378?
10% is easy. Just move decimal from end one space to the left. So 378 becomes 37.8
That’s 10%. But we need to 20%. So just double that number.
37.8+37.8=75.6
You can see we are with a couple of dollars using the different hacks. But this last one is the fastest and easiest for sure. But does take practice to get reasonably fast at it.
For purposes of playing hands it may rarely or never be needed. But it is important to know what you are actually winning in pots. Most people way over estimate and don’t have a clue what their actual dollar EV in a hand is.
