Romans 1:16-17 // Nathan Miller

What are your biggest regrets? Your biggest failures? How many times have you hurt -- deeply hurt -- the people you love most in the world? How often have you made a rule for yourself that you weren’t even able to keep? How many times have you stood before the mirror and thought: What is wrong with you?

The good news -- the gospel -- reveals the righteousness of God. The rightness of God.

He has found a way to forgive me of all my junk. Truly forgive me and cleanse my conscience. And begin the process even now of making me whole. While at the same time, maintaining His integrity of rightness, justice, holiness, and perfection. Of being a God who is still worthy of my adoration and affection.

Romans 1:8-15 // Brooks Nesse

Perhaps we come in feeling like we’ve squandered opportunity after opportunity, you come from brokenness, people have told you are not worthy enough to be received by anyone. But praise God it’s not about our worth, it’s about his. And that’s where the gospel breaks in, it has the power to break division between races, social status, and occupation. It even leads to Christ Community letting a Bengals fan preach on Sunday. If that’s not proof of the power of the gospel, I don’t know what is.

Why would Paul want to preach the gospel to a group of Christians? Because they need it now as much as they did when they first believed and so do we.

Romans 1:1-7 // Jonathan Neef
Everyone knows that feeling of desperation. Maybe it was when you went out past where you could touch in the pool before you could swim well. Maybe it was when the doctor called about the results of a routine test. Maybe it was when your job was eliminated due to a merger. Those moments of feeling the need for rescue. These become mile markers in our lives. Moments that shape us and how we understand and tell our stories.

This morning as a church family we are beginning a new message series through the New Testament book of Romans. In this inspired letter we encounter the good news of an unfolding rescue story for all humanity including you and me. We are going to see that we follow a God who rescues.

2 Samuel 24 // Jonathan Neef

How would you write the ending of your story? Surely you would want to be seen in the best light possible right? Well, the ending of Samuel shows David as the chief of sinners. But while His sin is great, God’s Mercy is Greater. Today we see the story of sin, wrath, repentance, and mercy. Praise be to God the mercy extended to David is extended to us through the cross.

2 Samuel 14-18 // Brooks Nesse

At this stage of II Samuel, we reach what seems to be a total spiritual eclipse, where darkness seems to be so prevalent that you struggle to see a world where the God of light is working. But it's here in the darkness that we see God break-in in the most unexpected ways with the most unexpected people. But I will warn you, with all that being said, today’s story doesn’t have a happy ending either but I want to show you glimpses of God’s plan still pressing on despite humanity doing all it can to thwart it.
But God’s promises are more enduring than the sins of his people. Our sins do not have the power to thwart the promises of God, therefore we have hope.

2 Samuel 12:1-25 // Nathan Miller

Sin exposed can lead to grace. When we get caught. Or when we have the courage to confess. It’s a wake-up call. It’s a fire alarm going off in the middle of the night, warning you that if you want to live, you’ve got to leave the building.

It’s a light shining in the darkness. You didn’t even know you were walking along the edge of the cliff, headed for disaster. But now you can see the better way.

For David repents. Which means he recognizes his sin (finally), owns it (without excuses), accepts the consequences for it, and turns away from it as quickly as possible. That’s grace. That’s the gift of God.

And this same hope can be given to us!

2 Samuel 11:1-27 // Nathan Miller

Where will I turn when I fail? The question isn’t whether or not you’re going to fail. The question is what will you do with your failure? Will you turn before you become the villain?

Hiding always leads to more shame. Duplicity never leads to happiness. Self-justification only brings about deeper inadequacy.

King David is a colossal disappointment. But he was never meant to be the ultimate hero we need. Yet, what’s so amazing to me, is that our God is so big, so forgiving, so loving, that He actually uses even this to bring about our rescue.

And where Adam and Eve failed. And where David failed. And where you and I fail. Jesus succeeds. Jesus passes the test.

2 Samuel 9:1-13 // Jonathan Neef

We are in the place of Mephibosheth. We are orphaned from our heavenly father, we are crippled and broken by sin, we are poor and needy. Yet God in his Love searches for us and seeks us out. He calls us to himself and lavishes his steadfast and enduring love toward us. He offers us a seat at the table, riches, an inheritance, a place in His kingdom. Why would God be so generous towards us? Because of His covenant and loyal love toward His Son. Just as David demonstrated steadfast love toward Mephibosheth because of His love for Jonathan. So also, in a much greater way, God demonstrates his love toward us because of Jesus.

2 Samuel 6:1-15 // Nathan Miller

When God manages us, He rescues us. He becomes the sacrifice for us. And instead of our death, He dies, and gives us life.

And that same God reaches out to us. Not to destroy us but to redeem us. To offer His presence to us. And to make us whole.

Jesus is the true Ark, believe it or not, for He is the presence of God. He’s not a symbol of the presence. He is God's presence.

And He is the ultimate sacrifice, on the cross, that allows us to enter His presence. With boldness. With confidence.

It’s fatal to try to manage God. But there’s so much joy when we let Him manage us. Which will you do?

1 Samuel 24 // Jonathan Neef

Will we trust God for His way and for His timing?

What if this costs us our chance to seize everything we ever wanted? What if this is our moment to make it happen? Will we capture it? Or let it slip away?

We are going to look at two men, the first two kings of Israel named Saul and David. We are going to see how God asks them to wait. And we will see how they respond to the waiting. One of them waits on God with a posture of open hands. The other grasps for control and seizes his moment.

David trusted in God’s word, more than he trusted the opportunity, the voice of his men, or even what he wanted.

1 Samuel 18-20 // Nathan Miller

As Jonathan was nearly pinned to the wall by a spear, Jesus was pinned to the cross, truly dying in our place, so that we could live. And just as Jonathan found a way to rescue David, Jesus does the same for us.

But the difference is, when Jonathan died he stayed dead. And there is no earthly friendship that can possibly meet all your needs. For all of our friends will one day die. Except for Jesus. For He came out of the ground alive. Offering everlasting friendship to all who come to Him.

While we need our earthly friends, we can learn from David and Jonathan what biblical friendship looks like. There’s only One friend who can meet your deepest need. And His name is Jesus.

You’re NOT strong enough to withstand the storm. No one is. Not alone. And this armor metaphor was never meant to be taken alone.

Paul is writing this in a Roman prison. He can look over and examine his guards' armor. He knows the strength of the Roman Empire. And that one of the things that made them so strong was their ability to stand together.

Their armor was interlocking. So they could form a sort of wall. Their strength was their togetherness. That’s how they could stand.

And if you want to stand firm against the lies, you need to surround yourself with the truth, and with a community of people who will help you keep believing the truth. We need to train for the real battle.

Paul doesn’t only address bondservants, he addresses those who are in power over them. And he says that the masters should “do the same” to the bondservants? That the masters should serve the bondservants and do good to them, not as people-pleasers, but with sincerity! I am confident that none of you who hears this sermon is a “master”, but I think there are many of you to whom this text is quite relevant. There are people here who are in positions of authority, who have the power to either exploit or enrich the lives of the people over whom you have authority.

In our modern world and economy, I think it is likely that most people find themselves in something (very roughly) equivalent to one of these circumstances every day.

God’s goal for the family is that we’d learn the way of Jesus together. It’s meant to be like a little church. And just like the church, God’s goal for the family is that we’d learn the way of Jesus together.

Parenting is a full-time job and then some, and while there are a ton of things on a parent’s job description, at the top of the list is this: learn the way of Jesus together.

But is that at the top of our lists? We might say it is…but in the way we actually live, how we prioritize our time, the way we interact with one another. What do you hope most for our children?

Marriage is not about you. Aren’t you glad? The greatest things in life are the things that are NOT ABOUT YOU.

This is about Jesus. The greatest love story of all time. God as our husband. And we run from Him. We hide from Him. We cheat on Him. But He pursues us. He wants to be with us. To cherish us. You are God’s beloved.

And this is good news if you’re single. It’s good news if you’re in a bad marriage. It’s good news if you’re in a great marriage!

Jesus is your Husband. We are His beloved bride. And our marriage will never end. And with our earthly marriages, we get to tell that story to our watching world.

Because loved people love people. And we need a community that reinforces that and reminds us. And we need it all the time.

Because we forget how loved we are. We so quickly go back to thinking we need to take in order to feel, and so we settle for sex over love. Or lust over intimacy. Or we feel unsafe and afraid, so we keep hiding in our shame in the dark, and we settle for isolation over vulnerability and community. We forget.

You are God’s beloved! So much so that He sent His Son to rescue us. He offers us forgiveness for when we fail. You are the object of His desire and affection and provision. And if that’s true! Then we are truly free to love others!

If you don’t know WHO you are. You won’t know what your life is for. You won’t know the best way to live. So we make it up as we go. And hope for the best. It’s exhausting and it’s isolating. Who are you?

God, in His Word, is about to answer that question. If you are a Christian, you never have to wonder who you are or why you exist. Because God tells us. And maybe that sounds bossy. Like, what gives Him the right?

But listen: would you rather muddle through, struggling to answer that question on your own? Or let the God who made you. Who sees you. And loves you fiercely. Who knows why He made you. Will you let Him tell you who you are?

The word saint simply means Christians. If you are a Christian, Paul calls you a saint. And ministry simply means service. So our job as church leaders is to equip you to help others.

Let me tell you, one of the best pathways to your own growth. One of the best pathways towards greater oneness and teamwork within the church. Is when you help others grow. It’s when you serve.

The church is not a spectator sport. It is not for consumers. And it is not for wimps. It is for those who actually want this Body to look like Jesus. Yes, the church is very flawed. We have a long way to go. But Jesus gave His life for her. What is He asking from us?

Whatever you expect from God. It’s not enough. He wants to give you more. And ultimately, He wants to give you more of Himself and more of His love.

He will never walk out on you. He will not leave you. He’s never disappointed in you. He sees all of you, everything about you, and loves you far more abundantly than we can even ask or think…

Yeah, that sounds great, but how do we experience it? Especially when things feel really hard right now.

Mostly through one another. Church, we need one another to know and experience God’s love. We feel it at church when someone remembers our name. Or when their face lights up when they see you. We feel it when someone recognizes you’re hurting and encourages you or prays with you.

Just as the cross of Christ has two beams, vertical and horizontal, so is the nature of Christ’s reconciling work on the cross. Ethnic unity in the church isn’t merely an application of the gospel, it is a continuing extension of the gospel. When we settle for a gospel that only speaks to matters of vertical reconciliation without horizontal reconciliation we are settling for an impoverished, truncated, and incomplete gospel. One of the more powerful ways we declare the gospel of Christ is in how we display the body of Christ as an ethnically unified and reconciled people. The work of ethnic unity and reconciliation in the church is an embodied testimony and witness to the power of the gospel. Because the gospel makes us and moves us to be family. But we risk losing the credibility of this testimony and witness to the gospel as the church when we at best see the work of ethnic unity and reconciliation as merely a fringe benefit of the gospel, and at worst see it as a distraction from the gospel.

The story of God, and His work of reconstructing us and reconstructing our world, is so much bigger than just good works. But also good work.

The work you do. Whatever that is. Wherever you spend a majority of your time contributing. Whether you get paid for it or not. Whether you like it or not. That is also part of the good work God has prepared for you, to join Him in.

Work is part of God’s good design. Adam and Eve, even before the fall, were commanded to join God in working the Garden. They were co-workers. Even in the New Creation, there will be work for us to do. Right now, in our broken world, we have the opportunity to join God in His work of reconstruction.

As we consider the cultural movement of “deconstructing” faith and turn to Ephesians with some hope that it might give us insight into how we can “reconstruct” faith, I wonder if deconstruction itself is not the problem, but instead, it is the quality of the thing we are deconstructing that has lead to disappointing outcomes. I wonder if, too often, we who have faith quickly plateau in our knowledge of God. I wonder if we have not sufficiently experienced the power of God in our lives so that we are captivated and convinced by it. Far be it from me to put myself in the place of Paul, but as I hear him pray that those who have faith might be given a spirit of wisdom and revelation of the knowledge of God, I feel compelled to pray the same thing for myself and for my brothers and sisters in Christ.

The deconstructing of faith is a popular practice these days. But what is it exactly? For some, it is an opportunity to live their authentic life free of all moral and religious authority. For others, it is a sincere attempt to determine if their faith has been formed by the words of Christ or by cultural ideologies. Regardless of the motivation, it is clear that we are in serious need of Reconstructing Faith. But in order to do that we need a solid foundation upon which we can reconstruct our faith. This is precisely what we plan to do together as we explore the foundations of the Christian faith through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

Death is something we despise not because it marks the end, but because it was never meant to be here at all from the beginning. Death was never meant to be part of God’s good world. Death is a pain that feels like no other. Because it’s a pain that not only produces hurt, it produces hate. We hate death. We hate what death does. We hate what death takes. We hate that death exists. And that’s because we know deep down that death ought not to be. We tend to say that death is a part of life. That dying is what humans do. We have been dying ever since the beginning. The reality is that death is an abnormality. But even though the abnormality of death is now a reality in our world, the good news is that death will one day be defeated and wiped away forever.

For the sign of life that Jesus gives in declaring himself to be the resurrection and the life is the basis of our hope. A hope that says while death is a reality, it is in fact an abnormality that will be defeated through the immortality of Jesus who victoriously says “I am the resurrection and the life!”

And I pray that you would feel it right now if you’re one of His sheep. May you feel Him holding you. If you feel alone. If you feel lost, if you feel angry, if you feel disappointed or depressed. Do you see His hand encompassing you?

Is it possible that you have walked away from Jesus, not because you have tried him and want nothing to do with him, but because somewhere along the line you developed a view of Jesus that is contrary to the Jesus of the gospels?

My fear as a pastor is not that someone would reject Jesus. But that they would reject Jesus for the wrong reasons. Is it possible that the Jesus you, or someone you love, has walked away from is nothing more than a caricature of the real Jesus?

Look again, listen closely, and let Jesus speak for himself. Because he has come to make you out to be his very own by loving you, forgiving you, redeeming you, and calling you.

Jesus points to the one true path that will take us to the freedom our hearts long for. It is not a path of religious legalism, it is the path of discipleship with Jesus. When we embrace Jesus and become his “abiding” disciple then we will know the truth and when we know the truth we will be set free to experience the true freedom our hearts long for. In our culture when we refer to knowing we often think of having lots of information in our brain we can comprehend and spit out when we need it. What Jesus means by “knowing” the truth is not merely knowing the facts or having lots of information crammed in our brains, but rather deeply knowing and being known by someone. Jesus is speaking about relational knowing!

Bring that light into your office, your family, your neighborhood, those hard decisions, those dark places of anxiety. He wants to show you the way. For without Him our lives are like the earth without the sun. A wasteland drifting aimlessly through space.

And when we do walk in the light. Just sit in this promise for a minute. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In Greek, it is saying NEVER. NEVER EVER. No way ever!

One of the greatest indicators of whether or not you’ve drunk deeply of Jesus -- that you truly believe in Him -- is right here. Would the people around you look at you -- your attitudes, your words, your actions, the way you spend your time and money. The people closest to you. And the people who disagree with you. Or see the world very differently than you. Your coworkers and classmates.

Would they look at you and say: There is a river of life! I hope it splashes me!

Through His Holy Spirit poured out on all who believe. He wants to make us rivers of life.

So come to Him. Bring Him your need, your thirst. And drink.

Will we go with Jesus even when he challenges our sensibilities and our sin? Will we go with Jesus even when we are tempted to walk away? Will we go with Jesus even if it means enduring costs? Will we go with Jesus when others won’t?

The only way that we can answer in the affirmative is if Jesus is the Holy One of God who has the words of eternal life.

I realize that it may be hard for some of us right now to continue following Jesus. But when we know and believe the power and love of the Holy One of God who promises to not walk away from us then it is only natural to respond as Peter did “To whom shall we go.”

Could it be that the Son of God also longed for those places where He could hear the Father whispering to Him: I am with you.

I struggle to hear God's voice. But I regularly hear it most in 2 places. From His Word. And from His people. And if you feel like you’re drowning in the chaos. You are not alone. And you need it, too. His Word. And His people.

Imagine the chaos. Maybe it’s a relationship. Maybe it’s your cubicle. The next doctor's visit. Do you see it? Do you feel the storm?

The reassuring words of Jesus lovingly invite us to come to him to be satisfied. For Jesus has not only come to be the redeemer of our sin and the restorer of fallen creation. He has come to be our joy! And he has done so not just by bringing us what satisfies but being what satisfies.

Jesus is our savior but he is also our satisfier! For he alone knows what our hearts truly hunger for. And until we give up on our search for satisfaction in lesser things we will never be satisfied.

The fear of God frees us from all fears. And the only way we can properly fear God is by giving the fullness of our lives to Jesus, body, mind, and spirit. For when we do his life of perfection is credited to us and frees us from all fear of condemnation and judgment.

Friends, there is much to fear in this life filled with smoke, uncertainty, and chaos. But thanks be to God that through Christ the fears of sin and death are destroyed. Because the fear of God frees us from all fears.

We all want justice but without the judge. We all want wrongs to be righted but without surrendering to righteousness. And what we end up getting is an endless cycle of violence, oppression, and unforgiveness. And it leads only to the clamoring for power in order to defeat our enemies.

In a world where real meaningful justice work is stalled out and hijacked by polarizing conversations about justice, and where cancel culture is the justice tool of choice across the spectrum, we need a better tool. We need a better judge. We need a better gospel.

The only way we can find hope and justice in this world under the sun is to surrender our lives to the Son of God who himself surrendered his life to the One who judges justly.

The Bible teaches that God made a world of abundance. That if we look at the Garden, you and I were created for a world without lack, where we had everything we needed and more.

And even though our world is now broken, and our attachments are now broken, we can still enjoy God’s gift with gratitude. This is the theme of these final verses. Eat, drink, and be merry. Enjoy your work. And enjoy His gifts.

Instead of gratitude we think: I worked hard for that stuff! I earned it. I’m entitled to it. Which only feeds the dragon inside you. Instead, we need to learn to say thank you. And say it all the time.

We know that our labor is not in vain because there is life beyond the sun. Because God has called a people unto himself from all peoples of the earth to establish the work of their hands no matter where they are or what they do.

When our perspective and time horizon changes regarding our work, we are able to see that God is at work in and through our work. We are able to see that our work is not incidental, but rather it is integral to God’s work of restoring all things.

How do we know that our labor is not in vain? Because of the promise of God in Isaiah 65 that is echoed throughout the entire biblical storyline and reverberates in and through our lives today.

Like all things created by God, our desires for pleasure possess the capabilities to lead us to the goodness of God AND to the evils of death, decay, and destruction. What the Holy Spirit is whispering to us through the words of Qoheleth is that pleasure can destroy us if it doesn’t direct us to our creator God and our redeeming king!

But in order to hear this and see the goodness and wisdom within these words, we need to respond and take proper action. Pleasure can destroy us if it doesn’t direct us to the creator of pleasure itself.

Our pleasures are pointing us all toward something. Either to the dead-end of pleasure as an end in itself or to the true chief end of humanity’s pleasure which is Christ.

If we are to hear the wisdom behind the woes in the book of Ecclesiastes, we need to understand the structure, nature, and purpose of the book. The reason why this is a deeply hopeful book is because it is one act in the entire play of God’s story of redemption and salvation. This is the power and beauty of reading the bible with the full story in mind.

If life under the sun is all there is then all we have is smoke. But there is a subtle whisper of hope in Ecclesiastes which turns into the saving shout in the gospels is that there is life beyond the sun. Amen!

The resurrection of Jesus is the proof of purchase for our sins. It proves that what Christ did on the cross actually accomplished our forgiveness. But it also illustrates the new kind of life that Jesus’ followers now live. A life that brings about healing, hope, and wholeness to our broken world.

This is what we remember and celebrate! This is our hope! It is the hope that our sin and shame does not have to define us because it was put to death with Jesus. It is the hope that death will not have the final word. Because our hope is in Jesus who entered death for us in order to forever keep death from us.

It is the hope that countless others have found throughout the ages.

The irony of this trial is that Jesus has already said, He’s the judge. Not us. Even with all our efforts to put Jesus on trial. The real trial is you and me. And we are so guilty. Look at the evidence. Call in the witnesses. Every thought you’ve ever had, every word you’ve ever spoken, every broken desire you’ve ever felt.

How long do you really think it’s going to take this Judge?

The only One who is truly innocent. Was found guilty for you. He stood in your place. So that if you’re with Him, His verdict over you is once and forever decided

This Judge has died for you. He rose again for you. And if we’re with Him, the verdict is in.

The reason we take the words of Jesus seriously and ask the question “Who does Jesus say that he is?” is because we believe he holds the power of life and death. For there is no other power or authority that we know who has faced death, entered death, and defeated death than the Lord Jesus.

As we gather this day, to submit the fullness of our lives to the fullness of who Jesus says he is, my invitation to you is to consider his claims, listen to his word, and enter the life he offers you in his kingdom now and forever. I pray that you would declare who he says he is. The son of God, the judge of the earth, and the giver of life.

Jesus came to this man at the pool of Bethesda and offered him the opportunity to be made whole.

Don’t settle for comfort when wholeness is what we want. Don’t settle for a clear conscience when forgiveness is what we need. And don’t settle for what Jesus offers when Jesus is what our hearts long for.

This man claimed that he wanted to be healed, made whole. But he wasn’t willing to receive everything that being made whole entailed. Namely repenting and following Jesus.

This man thought that his worst problem was his inability to walk. And while not making light of that ailment, Jesus lovingly draws near to him to tenderly tell him that there is a greater healing and wholeness that he is in need of.

Now here we are. Every one of us. Somewhere between meeting Jesus. And the fulfillment of all of His promises to us. Every Christian is on that path. Between saying yes to Jesus. And our long way home.

And you don’t know if your marriage will ever be better. Or your depression will ever be gone. Or your body will ever be healed. But you are trusting Jesus -- taking Him at His word. That by the time you get home, it’ll somehow be ok.

Just like the Samaritan woman, you may feel overwhelmed by the weight of your sin. And just like her, while you might think that Jesus is holding your past over you he is tenderly saying that even this will not keep him from holding you. He is saying “I know everything you have ever done. I have seen you at your worst. And I am not leaving.”

Why did Jesus have to pass through Samaria? Because his beloved was on the other side. Jesus went to Samaria so that this woman would meet him and proclaim he is the Messiah. And this would begin the wildfire spreading of this gospel that eventually made its way to this time and place to reach you and me.

The only true and lasting way to wage war against the sins of comparing and complaining is to delight in and declare the truth of Jesus. The road sign on the path of repentance is not a Stop Sign but a U-Turn. It is not simply about ceasing from sin, but also seeking a better joy.

I believe that so much of our despair, discontent, and disdain in life stems from a failure to delight in and declare the beauties of the better joys of Jesus. This is why the habits of encountering Jesus through the scriptures, prayer, service, evangelism, and gathered worship are so vital. For they cultivate in our hearts greater capacities to delight in Jesus who must be greater.

We know the world is often a tragic and ugly place, but sometimes it’s hard for us to see because we don't know what to do with it and we don’t want to face it—in fact, we try to ignore or cover it up—but the world is often a dark place. A place that has so much potential for light and truth and goodness and beauty and life and joy—the world as it ought to be—but it has come to be characterized by darkness and lies and all sorts of evil and ugliness, death and tragedy. This is the world as it is. We might expect God to hate the world.

But this is precisely why this verse is so wonderful: God loved the world.

When we see that the very best joy and life has arrived in Jesus, then it is only natural and right and good for us to listen to the timeless words of his mother, “Do whatever he tells you!” Not from a place of religious obligation but from a place of joyful adoration for what he has done for us.

So whether we are a skeptic with objections, or a Christian trying to respond to someone with objections, often the best thing we can do is take these words to heart: come and see. We need to enter in first, and then invite others to enter in, to see how Jesus makes sense of it all.

This is who we encounter when we meet Jesus for ourselves. The Lord of all of heaven and earth, come to dwell among us. The Son of Man, lifted up high on a cross. Risen and ascended to heaven and ruling over all creation. Someone who knows everything about you, better than you know yourself. This is who we meet when we meet Jesus for ourselves.

When we behold and believe the fullness of the Word made flesh we come to find a way of living as his followers in this world. For in it we find the power to emulate the sympathetic and compassionate nature of God who drew near to social outcasts and sinners. Who came not simply declaring the good news of the kingdom but displaying it through his compassion and care for the needs of others.

What this means is that the embodied nature of Christ as the incarnate word of God communicates to us the wide scope of God’s mission in the world. God became a material being in part to show us that he cares about our material existence. Jesus became a human body to suffer with us to model for us the way of his kingdom in suffering with others.

This does not mean that we will never go through dark valleys or have Psalm 22-like experiences. But Psalm 23 shows us that on the other side of the valley of the shadow of death there is abundant life.

Dark valleys will come. But right in the middle of our darkest valleys, our Shepherd is with us! He came to enter our darkest valleys, and went far deeper than any of us could ever go. We will fear no evil, for Christ is with us!

Boastful arrogance has no air to breathe in a room filled with gratitude toward God. The less grateful we are to God, even for the small things, the more blind we will be to his goodness and presence, and more boastful and arrogant we can become.

Real faith is prepared for what we can’t control...which is a lot of stuff. But are we a people who cling to Jesus tighter than our own plans? Or are we deceived by the illusion and delusion of our own control?

The reason we can be ok not being in control is because we trust and follow the one who walked straight into death and hell itself following the will of God to bring about our salvation and security.

Lament is a way of getting what we want in line with what God wants. Because lament adopts God’s view of a broken situation so that it can begin to be made whole. It begins to develop within us a distaste for certain things so that we will turn away from them. It begins to reshape our wants and develop a taste within us for what God wants.

I don’t know exactly what it is you need to turn from. It’s probably not all the same for all of us. But as we humble ourselves and turn to God, he will give us grace and show us what we need to turn away from. And when we come to the Lord like this, he will lift us up.

Learning to listen and thinking before we speak can help train our tongues, but it cannot save our souls. These practices only address symptoms and surface level issues. They will not and indeed cannot remedy the source from which our words set things on hellish fire.

Real faith changes how we speak. Real faith shapes and forms our words. Only because real faith comes from the one who is the word of God. Our only hope of being rescued from the fires of hell within us and that await us because of sin is receiving Jesus, the word of God, who is able to save our souls and give us new life now and forever.

Real faith changes how we speak, but it's because real faith changes our hearts.

God’s radical grace toward us is what compels us to respond to him with a real faith that really works. Our works are not what move God toward us. Our works are not what convince God to accept us. Our works are not what persuade God to forgive us.

God doesn’t need our works in order to rescue us from sin and death, because the work of Christ on the cross for us was fully sufficient for that.

But that doesn’t mean God isn’t interested in our works.

If that is true, where does your mercy need to triumph over judgment for someone else? Who do you not want to serve. Not want to forgive. Not want to acknowledge. Not want to love. Because it’s hard. Or uncomfortable. Or inconvenient. I’m not talking about being best friends, or giving trust where it is not deserved, or not having boundaries with certain people in your life. I’m asking, who needs our mercy, because we have received such mercy?

The Spirit hears our groans. He joins with us in our groaning. He steps into the place of confusion, doubt, or fear. We’re His children! Isn’t that what a good parent would do? He adds His groans to ours.

But here’s the difference. While our groans are weak. His groans are strong. While our groans are full of confusion. His are full of clarity. While our groans feel like despair. His are filled with hope. Because He knows what His children need.

Walking in the Spirit requires active effort, not passivity. The metaphor of walking implies that we are on a journey every day that requires us to apply the freedom of the Spirit to every aspect of our existence. When you get up in the morning, do your job, watch tv, and lie down. We are to walk in the Spirit every moment, day after day, year after year.

As we do this, the Spirit leads us. As we come to know the Scriptures more and more, the Spirit uses the truth to transform our lives more from the ways of the flesh to the new way of the Spirit. Whenever the Spirit shows us the way, it is our responsibility to keep in step with that.

But they will never be enough. We will never be enough. Our longings are too big for any person or people to fulfill. Even our best friends disappoint us. And even if they don’t. They will eventually leave us.

New life is only possible through the Spirit who reveals to us this beautiful news. The good news of Jesus is not simply that we are forgiven. It is no less than that. In this discussion, we explore the implications of the gospel on cultural diversity and why it is important for the church to work towards it.

Dr. Peter Cha is a professor from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS). He has extensive experience in pastoral and multicultural ministry. In addition, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, his master’s at TEDS, and his PhD at Northwestern University.

QUESTIONS FROM PETER: Within a 5-10mile radius from your church campus, what significant people groups dwell there? What new people groups have moved into this area?

In what ways might your church be able to intentionally reach out and serve all people groups who dwell within this 5-10 mile radius mission field?

What might be some of the costs and challenges when your campus invites and embraces all people groups who live within this 5-10 mile radius? What might be the benefits of doing so?
