Have you found your leadership voice?
David Pope joins our podcast to talk about an aspect of leadership we haven't covered in our 50+ episodes - and yet it's one that every leader has. A voice! How often do we stop to think about our voice? Do you spend as much time thinking about how you sound as you do on what you are going to say? What does your leadership voice say about you? How do others perceive your leadership, do they want to put their trust in you and follow your lead?
David is a BBC trained voiceover artist and director and the founder of All Voice Talent, and his conversation with Dan covers:
"Just like the camera never lies, the microphone never lies either. In leadership roles, you’ve got to be at peace with your voice—you need to understand its nuances, strengths, and weaknesses."

Dr Kate Simpson is Director of the Systemcraft Institute and joins our podcast to talk about systems leadership.
The world is facing more challenges than ever before. Climate change, migration, inequality, food security... the list goes on. These are big complex challenges, so big, that they can't possibly have a single owner. They are global and systemic; they need careful thought as their interconnectivity is not to be underestimated. What seems an obvious solution to one challenge, might cause more damage to another - and so what is the answer?
Systems leadership is a complex topic that we’ve recognised as a common thread across recent podcasts on the polycrisis, VUCA, BANI and sustainability. We’re delighted that Kate joined us to explain what systems leadership is and how it can be applied to these complex problems, enabling leaders and organisations to address them and ultimately contribute to a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable world.

Jamais Cascio is a futurist. He’s spent the past 20+ years thinking, writing and speaking about what might happen, speculating about possibility and more importantly, the consequences of those possibilities. He created the BANI framework in 2018 and six years later, Impact is the first UK/US based organisation to invite him to speak about it. BANI is a framework for articulating what reality feels like at present. It stands for brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible.
“BANI was a way for me to articulate my feelings in back in 2018. I had a sense that VUCA was insufficient. That we eat VUCA for breakfast. Basically, it's everywhere. And just like a fish swimming in water doesn't really recognise the water, we’re surrounded by VUCA all the time. It's really hard to distinguish it. And so I thought, let's come up with something different. Brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible are words that have captured people and have really resonated for audiences around the world.”

VUCA is an acronym first introduced in the early 1990s by the American Military to describe extreme conditions after the Cold War. It stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous and took off in a business context after the 2008 global financial crisis. We published a blog about it then, and over 15 years on, it still makes our ‘most read’ list every year. But is VUCA still relevant today?
As the founder of Gritty People, Kay Woodburn works with executives, athletes and teams from all over the world to make the changes that will help them navigate their VUCA landscapes. In this podcast we explore how VUCA provides meaning to what people are experiencing and how to use the framework in organisations.
“Having the VUCA framework gives an acknowledgement that people are not alone. Businesses are not alone. That this difficult landscape we have to navigate exists for all of us.”

She believes that facing and exploring uncertainty and difference is essential to being, learning and leading in our age. This episode touches on how coaching can support people to explore their edges, to learn what is required to get them to their goals and to see if AI could ever step into this role.
“One thing that comes across in lots of coaching sessions is leaders are still going non-stop, edging on burnout. We’re trying to do more with less, dealing with a highly uncertain environment and the high performing people that we work with have reached their edge. Coaching provides some space to think and to build back some resilience.”

In 2015 UN Member States set a deadline of 2030 to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. At the speed we are going, it will take 286 years. “When we look at the world, what we need from our leaders is changing. Things like climate change, the cost-of-living crisis, the pandemic and the fallout from all of that, means we need a different type of leadership if we want to create a different type of world. What got us here isn't going to get us to the future.”In this edition of In Good Company, Louisa Rodriguez talks to Dan about what it means to be a UN Women Delegate in 2023, who her female role models are and the importance of having a creative outlet.Coming up: 010: Entrepreneurial leadership with Leigh Gammons, TangentTo learn more about Impact, please visit https://www.impactinternational.comConnect with us on social:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/impact-international_2Twitter: https://twitter.com/impact__intlDan Jones on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danjones87/Louisa Rodriguez on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/louisa-r-574a5534
Liz Ward (she/her) is director of programmes at Europe's biggest LGBTQIA+ organisation and human rights charity, Stonewall. Many organisations are working to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, and global social justice movements have also put a spotlight on the need for strong DEIB leadership. Creating a culture where people feel they belong isn’t something that can be achieved overnight, it’s a constant journey and one that many of us feel we should be able to contribute to more effectively. Doing business is becoming increasingly complex, with ever-changing societal and environmental issues that require our attention, in order for organisations to continue to thrive sustainably.
Sustainable innovation is about creating and integrating new business strategies, products, and services that accelerate positive social change and protect and preserve environmental integrity, whilst enhancing business performance. It is a process through which environmental, social and financial considerations are integrated into company systems, from idea generation through to research and development and commercialisation.
In this episode, Impact's Scott Rose is joined by Ryan Hamilton, Chief of Staff for the Environmental Defense Fund, to discuss how change can be influenced within our organisations.
The issue for organisations isn’t that they are not learning organisations; it isn’t that they can’t learn. The issue is whether our organisations can actually learn something new.
Human-centred organisations are new learning organisations; they are committed to learning new things that change mindsets and behaviour, that help them to grow, to move beyond frozen mental models, identities, fears, and previous experiences.
But what does ‘new learning’ really mean?
In this episode, we listen to Impact’s Jo Appleby and Grahame Broadbelt as they discuss A New Learning Organisation.

No organisation is an island. Every organisation is intrinsically dependent for their success on the wider social, economic and environmental context, on both local and global scales. Human-centric organisations see no boundary between what is happening inside and outside their organisations; instead they see only relationships, interconnection and interdependence. In this episode, we join Impact's Jo Appleby and Grahame Broadbelt as they discuss why Ecology is Everything.
To download the whitepaper, please visit https://www.impactinternational.com/blog/2021/06/human-centred-organisations-what-they-are-why-we-need-them-and-how-be-one
It’s a common misconception that leaders and managers are different roles, but in human-centered organisations, leaders and managers operate on the same continuum, defined less by their job title than the work that they do. Because leadership isn’t a character trait or a job title; it’s a special and particular form of action that anyone can take, at any time.
Join Impact’s Grahame Broadbelt and Jo Appleby as they discuss human-centered leadership and management.
Extremely difficult to build, but quick and easy to erode - trust is the oil that makes relationships work. Listent to Impact’s Grahame Broadbelt and Jo Appleby discussing how organisations can foster an environment of trust, and why this enhances business performance.

To successfully change an organisation people need the right conditions and the right motivators. Change initiatives that work are initiatives that start and end with people. Here Jo Appleby talks to Grahame Broadbelt about how to create those conditions and explore successful examples.

Stories are everything. They help us understand the world and reflect on how we should live in it. They help us engage with the big unwieldy issues we encounter in our lives. At their best, they allow space for dialogue and celebrate collective experience.
In this storytelling episode, we hear from Alan Lane of Slung Low Theatre company. He shares a story of challenge, innovation and change associated with their relocation to the oldest working men’s club in Britain, The Holbeck in Leeds. Alan joins Impact’s head of creative change, Dom Fitch. Dom wrote an article about the power of storytelling, you can read that here.

Should we be challenging the design of technology platforms to enable more accessible, inclusive consumption? How can we harness new technologies to transform the ability for employees to learn at the pace of change?
To learn about this and more, we listen in on a conversation between Hannah Baron & Alice Wroe. Hannah leads Impact’s in house digital design agency – Zinco. She and her team were integral to the creation of Impact’s own piece of learning technology, called air- a digital tool that would allow Impact to seamlessly take experiential learning to scale and deliver in both blended and virtual solutions.
In her role as Augmented and Virtual Realities Lead for Atlantic Institute, Alice researches and commissions innovative ways the global community of leaders can be together when physically apart, exploring the question of “How can we be human when we’re digital?”

Education, careers, opportunities, mental health, injustices, leadership action. This episode features the fascinating journey of Cynthia Adebiyi-Yekinni from the UN Global Compact UK. Cynthia joins Impact's Jo Appleby to share her story.
Do you take the time for reflection? What's the best way for you to reflect? Join Dan as he looks back on the first series of the In Good Company podcast, sharing his highlights and learnings.
Every organisation has had to embrace the digital world in some way. Here's our story about how we've done just that.
A change strategy is a people strategy All organisations are facing unprecedented changes in their competitive environment. Whether the disruptors are political, environmental, down to consumer expectations or unicorn start-ups, organisations need to be adaptive, agile, creative, innovative and more. The necessity for organisational transformation is critical.
The more people are involved in the Why, What and How of organisational change, the more they will own the future of their organisation.
Change is about learning – people learning to work differently or to do different work. So, what skills and mindsets will you need?
Impact work alongside organisations using our consulting frameworks to help find answers to these questions and release the full potential for lasting change within your organisation.
Is your team a high performing team? What does your team need in order to achieve its purpose?
Impact's Team Performance Inventory (TPI) is an assessment tool which helps a team see its performance clearly. Using the 6 domains of our trademarked Team Performance Model, we can help you equip your teams and their leaders with the tools, mindsets, self-knowledge and reflective capacity to build teams that are a joy to work in and that will boost the productivity of your organisation.
It works. And if your teams work, so does your organisation.
It's no secret that COVID-19 has brought many challenges to our working world. With the increase of remote working, leadership is being tested. What can we do to stay more connected? What can we learn from this experience? Scott and Sue join Dan to share their experience and best practices.
“I think fast, I talk fast, and I need you guys to act fast if you want to get out of this. So pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the f*** car!”
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary teams and potentially extraordinary leadership. That can be confusing when you have an established culture, but we all know in times of rapid change we don’t have long to make decisions. The better a team functions and the better clarity it has of its purpose the more likely it will be successful.
Andy joins Dan to talk through his experience of what it's been like leading a team through the extraordinary times due to COVID-19.

What is coaching? Why do we need it? What are the benefits of coaching?
Using our experiential learning approach, we partner with leaders to inspire, develop and maximise potential.
We offer a unique set of leadership coaching services that are designed to support leaders, managers, teams, project groups and networks.
We see in organisations everywhere that the skills and expertise that created success over the last 10 years are not the same as the ones that will create success in the decade ahead. For organisations to change, leaders need to change; to do that they need to become active learners and help others to learn. No learning, no change.
All our coaches have a wealth of coaching experience and participate in ongoing professional development. What makes Impact coaching uniquely effective is that all of our coaches are also leadership development experts, experiential learning designers, and expert group facilitators.
