He served his time in prison, only to find minimum-wage level jobs available. He started his own business, but felt trapped by the high amount of work he had to put in just to keep it alive.

Then he found Bitcoin, and his life changed.

The Conversation: Tapping into Your Financial Power...No Matter How Much You Have

Money is one of the most essential things we need to survive, but is one of the things most of us know so little about.

Most of us don’t know what’s in our 401(k), yet it’s OUR 401(k).

Many of us believe the stock market is only for certain folks, yet place our bets on winning a lotto ticket.

Many of us look our paycheck, and lose it before we can even think of a “budget”

On top of this, the majority of us believe that we don’t have options to grow our money.

Kevon L. Chisolm and his teenage son Kevon Kamari Chisolm, Jr. aka “Junior Wallstreeter” will share with you why we need to tap into the full power of financial literacy. We don’t just mean budgeting and saving.

We’re talking about giving your money options to grow: 401(k)s, stocks, and more.

Tune in if you are ready to learn how to start maximizing your money, no matter where you are in your financial journey.

Topics We Cover

  • Why financial literacy is more than budgeting and saving

    • How do I become proactive about my money?
    • Do you know what’s in your 401K?
    • Investment clubs-scams or opportunities?
    • Opportunities to teach younger children about money
    • How do I pick a stock?

    • Bitcoin-good or bad investment?

    • How do you research stocks?
    • What are dividends?
    • Foundation of maximizing your money: How do I start?
    • Why our community needs to learn financial literacy

    • Why knowing your history is key to your financial future

3 Important Things to Remember

Start by asking questions The first step to maximizing money is to open your mind and start asking questions about the financial habits you already have

**You can grow your money** No matter how much you have, everyone has an opportunity to grow their money through a lot of ways: investing, learning new skills, real estate, and more

Connect with people who respect money Once you are ready to change your financial future, find people and resources (books, podcasts, courses) that can help you reach your financial goals.

**The Homework**

Today’s homework is simple, but requires deep thought...just 3 questions to ask yourself

  1. How much money do you need to be happy?
  2. Where did that amount come from?
  3. Do you ever believe you will achieve the money you need to be happy?

Ask yourself the above three questions

The Conversation: Building Bigger Dreams with No Limits

In our first episode with Reggie Calhoun, Jr, we talked about his dream of creating his own college. Reggie shared how he was able to ignore the critics and naysayers who tried to get in his way.

Reggie is back.

This time, his dream has grown even bigger. Reggie’s dream of starting a college prep academy that focused on helping student athletes has now expanded into a college that offers Associates, Bachelors, and certificates programs (online and on campus) along with branches now getting started in Haiti..with other countries to come.

This transformation, from dream to even bigger dream, is what Reggie and Ken talk about in this follow-up episode.

If you’re looking to grow your dream from where it is to where it could be, you don’t want to miss this episode.

Topics We Cover

  • How to expand your dream...when your resources are low
  • Getting the motivation to take a big leap

    • How to turn your “failing moments” into learning moments
    • Creating a dream that is bigger than you
    • Growing your dreams without a roadmap
    • Why upgrading your dream is like playing monopoly
    • Expanding your worldview

    • Why nobody can tell you the exact way to build your dream

    • Letting go of limiting beliefs
    • Taking the right advice from the right people (and why you need to ignore people who can’t help your dream)
    • Where Reggie’s dream is growing next

    3 Important Things to Remember

You don’t need permission to build your dream your way Your dream is the permission

Every dream starts in the dark. Dreams aren’t given. They are built as you take action.

To build bigger dreams, find the why Understanding your “why” will helps connect you to other people’s “why” for a even bigger dream

The Homework

Following your dream can be harder. Growing your dreams can be even harder.

To help you start expanding your mindset to help you start expanding your dreams, ask yourself 3 questions:

If I had $1 million today to fix something, what would I fix first?

If I were the CEO of a business, what business would it be?

If I were on a reality TV show, what would I want to be?

The Conversation: COV1D-19….One Year Later

In this follow-up episode, Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos (“Dr. G”) is back to talk about COVID-19.

This time around, he is sharing what the medical community has learned about the disease that completely changed the world.

Dr. G will be sharing how to handle the huge amount of information (and misinformation) that comes from the media, vaccinations, and how we can stay healthy going forward.

If you’re someone who has vaccination concerns or are confused about news about the virus, this quick episode will help give you the facts to make clear and informed decisions about your health.

Questions We Explore

  • What have we learned about COVID-19 a year later?
  • Why do viruses always come from animals?
  • Should I trust some of the “horror stories” I read?
  • Does the vaccine have side effects?
  • Is a vaccinated person contagious?
  • How should the medical community communicate to people who are hesitant to take the vaccine?
  • Why do COVID-19 use mRNA?
  • Will we need vaccine boosters?
  • What should you do if you don’t get vaccinated?

3 Important Things to Remember

Skip the fear, follow the science Look for information that gives facts, not opinion

The best weapon against a virus is information Having science-based information that can help the world make the best decision is key to stopping the spread

Make the best decision for you Decide base on YOUR circumstances, not someone else

The Homework

As the coronavirus pandemic continued, there was another thing that spread: information. In some cases, this information was helpful. In other cases, it was less than helpful. In extreme cases, it was harmful.

As Dr. G shared, one of the best tools we have to fight against a virus is information. Information helps us make decisions, for our own families and as a society.

Yet, we often don’t question where we get our information.

For this “homework”, let’s focus on the “information” piece of the conversation.

Take a minute to ask yourself the following:

1, Where do I get my information about the COVID-19 virus?

  1. Did I trust the information? Why?

3, Did I verify the information? Why or why not?

Think through your answers and ask what those answers mean for your health.

    • Keyonna Renea, Photographer, Patient/Wellness Advocate on a Mission

The Conversation: Fighting for Your Health….Despite the System

Keyonna Renea knew something wasn’t right with her body, yet physician after physician ignored her.

They assumed she was too young or just ignored her.

Years later, Keyonna Renea was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

That 9-year long journey between a doctor’s visit and a diagnosis transformed Keyonna from a patient into a patient advocate. Going through the maze of healthcare, Keyonna learned how to navigate the healthcare system. • Know your rights You have the right to get a second opinion and to make active and informed decisions about the care you receive

  • You are the CEO of your health You deserve it

The Homework:

Keyonna talked about the importance of listening to your body, but we often find it hard to take the time to do this, so let’s get reacquainted with our bodies with 3 quick 5-minute exercises that you can do any time

  1. Body Thoughts: Look at yourself in a full-length mirror for at least 1 minute (Set a timer on a cell phone). As you look at yourself, listen to the thoughts that you are telling yourself about your body. Are they positive? Are they negative? Take 4 minutes to write down some of what you were thinking.
  2. Body Gratitude: Go back to the full-length mirror, but this time take at least 2 minutes finding at least 3 things that you appreciate about your body. Write them on an index card and whenever you feel stressed today, take out that index card.
  3. Food Journal: Most of us don’t take the time to take the time to listen to our body and how it responds to the food we eat. For today, make an effort to write down the food you eat. You can use an app like MyFitnessPal or just write it down on a piece of paper. But….in addition to what you ate, write down a quick note about how you feel afterwards as well.

"All my life I’ve been trying to figure out….when there’s no blueprint”

    • Dr.Nino Rodriguez, Social Justice Educator, Activist, Community Organizer, Transformational Coach

The Conversation: How Do I Heal Myself When I Don’t Know Where to Start?

When we get a scar, there’s usually something we can get to fix it: Band-Aid, cast, or a call to the doctor.

But how do you heal your life?

In this raw and revealing podcast, Ken talks with Dr. Nino Rodriguez, a social justice educator, researcher, and community activist talk about this very important and life-altering question.

They’ll discuss how they learned to create a blueprint for healing when there was no blueprint, the struggles they had along the way, and some easy steps you can take to begin answering the question “How do I heal my own life?”, no matter where you are in your life’s journey right now.

Insights

* Figuring out your life in a complex world
  • Finding your life’s work and your life mission
  • Navigating masculinity in a socially unequal world
  • The danger of not following your own blueprint for success
  • Milestones & benchmarks...and how to figure out a life without a map

    • Being vulnerable & emotionally intelligent
    • The important role of self-love in communication
    • Dealing with anger
    • Being OK while you’re still learning to be OK….Why you don’t need to be perfect to heal
    • Finding your life’s calling

    • “Shit’s gonna happen: Using the right coping mechanism when life throws something unexpected

    • Being angry with ourselves
    • Black Men Heal and The Confess Project

Takeaways of the Conversation

 * **Healing is not easy.** It can be complicated, so let go of the “quick fix” idea
  • You don’t need permission or validation to be who you are. Chasing someone else’s idea of who you should be is an “invisible prison”.

  • How you love is how you communicate Understand how people around you (including you) express love and you will be able to communicate better

    The Homework:

Dr. Nino talked about a lot of things in this conversation, from race to masculinity to social justice and communication.

One of his biggest themes, however, was healing.

He emphasized the point that healing is about understanding what you are healing from, what you are healing for, and what you are healing toward.

So, for this homework, take a moment to think about your own healing

All you need is 15 minutes, some inspirational music

  1. (5 minutes)  Healing From Be sure to be in a safe space (mentally, emotionally, and physically) first. Then pull out a piece of paper or type on a blank page in a word processor. Write down (no filter) the answer to what question “What went wrong in my life?” Limit yourself to 5 minutes

2.. (5 minutes) Healing For After you did the above, walk away from what you wrote (at least 30 minutes or more, if you need it)….then come back This time, turn on inspirational musi while you write a list of all of the people in your life who care about you...and that you care for. Limit yourself to 5 minutes and include yourself at the top of the list.

  1. (5 minutes) Healing Toward Continue to listen to inspirational music. This time, start imagining that your life was better. Write down what that life looks like (no filter).

Once you’re done with the above exercises, put two things on the calendar:

(1) Gratitude Find one way to show gratitude to a person you care about

(2) Self-Care Plan at least an hour where you can step our of your daily grind and just relax. It could be on a staycation, just playing music with no agenda, reading, a book, or actual vacation

(3) Self-Build Plan at least another hour in your calendar where you dream...then take action on a part of that dream.. It could be as simple as researching a course you always wanted to take or speaking to someone in a new career field. It could also be starting an exercise routine that you never got around to.

Once you're done this week, see if these exercises helped change your life in any way

Here, at The Adverse Effect, “Adversity made me” is one of our mantras. Time and time again we have listened to the stories of guests who have been deeply affected by adversity, and yet have gone on to do extraordinary things. Our guest on today’s episode is proof that how you begin your life is not how you have to end it.

Born the youngest of 3 sons to a happily married couple, Ashley Tyrone Head should have had a normal, loving upbringing. But the tragic death of his mother, when he was just 2 weeks old, set off an unbelievable chain of events.

Raised by a single father, all Ashely knew was the softness of a father’s love until the age of 7 when his father started to bring home new friends. Ashley learned that his beloved father had become addicted to crack and the new friends were local prostitutes and addicts. His family home had become a drug den.

From this moment on his family life deteriorated. Ashley and his siblings were removed from their father’s care — but even that didn’t keep them from experiencing further turmoil.

Throughout it all Ashley remained focused on his studies and was accepted to one of the most prestigious HSBU colleges in the country. With no financial support, he relied on financial aid, loans, the UNCF scholarship foundation, and the several jobs that he worked.

Graduating with a degree in Chemistry he went on to obtain an MBA in Government contracts, acquisitions, and proposals. Ashley is now the Associate Director of Clinical Operations for a San Diego-based Oncology Biotech company. He is also the CEO of Curls Poppin’ hair products.

Trigger warning: Discussions of drugs, sexual abuse, and suicide.

What does courage mean to you? On today’s The Adverse Effect, we talk to Nate Gladdin as we explore manhood and courage through our guest’s extraordinary life.

Nate’s teenage years could have taken a tragic turn, had it not been for the tenacious determination of his mother to set him on the right path.

You see, Nate had turned to drugs and gangs to cover up a secret he had been hiding.

Later in life, he joined the Air Force, but upon returning from deployment Nate was met with some devastating news. This was the catalyst that opened Pandora’s box, a box that contained memories of childhood sexual abuse, an abusive father, and child abduction.

Nate had kept his demons buried for all these years; this time he had no option but to face them head-on.

This was followed by several failed attempted suicides. On his final attempt, he had a plan, however, someone came along and changed everything.

Listen to the end as this episode comes with a life-changing growth assignment — all you need is an audio recorder.

Moving to the present day, Nate has remodeled his entire life. He is striving, while still serving, to bring up the seriousness of men's mental health and the importance of doing more than just inheriting one's manhood.

The global pandemic has touched us all; in these times of uncertainty, it is easy to feel out of control.

On today’s The Adverse Effect, we talk to Dallas, Texas-based chiropractor Dr Alison Ezell and discuss how you can proactively take steps to maintain your health during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the importance of healthy eating and tips on supplements.

As of October 2020, there have been 44 million global cases of COVID-19 with, sadly, 1.1 million deaths. These high numbers can promote fear, so it’s important to also remember that 32 million people have recovered from the disease too.

Dr. Ezell gives us insights into the concept of how fear and negative energy can attract disease on a cellular level and how crucial it is to be conscious of negative thought patterns.

In The Gift of Ruin (a memoir by Dr. Ezell) she shares her journey to womanhood. She eloquently discusses marriage and relationships, wealth building, mentorships, leadership, purpose, health, and self-development. Knowing the power of these tools, she wants to equip women with the necessary knowledge so that they may fully embody each of these attributes in their lives.

“...the way to get out of that poverty mentality is ... to read” — Dr Alison Ezell

"We have a problem with us that we can’t be honest with each other.”

  • G. Michael,Police Sergeant in South Side of Chicago

The Conversation: Creating Solutions in a Complicated World

If you watch the news, you hear from the protestors, from the press conferences, from the reporters, the commentators, and the “experts”

….but how often do we hear from the viewpoint of the police?

In Part 2 of this two-part special, Ken again talks with Sergeant Michael about the changing relationship between the police and the community. They go over police reform, gun control, accountability, and figuring out our next step in police reform.

**Insights**
  • Personal Accountability vs Society
  • Life as a police officer...Why it’s not what you think
  • Do police officers need tanks?
  • Personal responsibility vs Society
  • Do police need more support?
  • Education & resources...Helping society fix crime before the police are called
  • Defund the police or no?

    Takeaways of the Conversation

Accountability is key to healing You need to understand what to fix before you heal it.

Politics affect every part of our police work Any solution for police reform must include an understanding of the politics behind police work.

Stopping crime is not an easy thing Police reform must address the concerns communities have about police in a way that keeps police and the communities they work in safe.

The Homework: Understanding the Other Side of the Police Debate

This year has made our society confront difficult questions about police. As the media and social media spotlight increases on the police, now can be an important time to understand what’s going on in your own neighborhood.

Take a moment to find the website of your local police department. Does it provide the information you’d expect? How much citizen involvement is encouraged? What does the police department focus on? How do they hire and recruit?

Your goal here is to get an impression of the police in your community. As someone who lives in the community you probably already have a perspective, but you might not be aware of what the police department says about itself.

Compare what you see on the website with your own interactions with the police or others in your community..

Have a question about the police? Check out the resources for more information.

"People can lead you in any direction they want to...”

  • G. Michael,Police Sergeant in South Side of Chicago

The Conversation: Where is the Justice?

In this time of increased media attention about the use of deadly (and sometimes fatal) force, many Black people are asking:

“What is going on?”

Many Black people have turned to expressing their outrage over this question through protests, marches, petitions, social media posts, songs, artwork, dance, and more.

But in the midst of answering this question, are we having the right conversation?

In this powerful episode of the Adverse Effect, Ken talks with a Black sergeant about policing in 2020 and the difficult conversation that our society is grappling with right now.

 **Insights**
  • Is “Chi-Raq” an accurate view of Chicago?
  • The power of media to create negative stereotypes

    • Unequal education = unequal access
    • Dealing with PTSD
    • What does it take to be a police officer?
    • Obstacles in a more diverse police force
    • Understanding police...from a police’s view

    • Police brutality and police reform

    • Is the media unfair to the police?
    • What is the right way towards reform?

Takeaways of the Conversation

**Be careful what you f****eed your brain:** The media you watch influences the thoughts you believe.

Quick conclusions lead to shallow answers: Effective solutions require more than quick conversations.

Reform cannot happen without accountability: You can’t fully fix a problem until you define what went wrong.

The Homework: Switching Up Your Comfort Zone

This podcast went into highly emotionally charged territory. When the media portrays stories of brutality and excessive force, it can be hard for everyone.

For today’s homework, let’s take a step back, away from the news reports and the social media posts….and let’s try something different.

Sergeant Michael talked about the importance of understanding the viewpoint of people who think differently than you.

Take a moment to think about what you believe and how you typically act. Are you someone who watches FOX or CNN? Are you someone who normally reads non-fiction, try fiction.

Give yourself just 5 minutes and try something different to expand your perspective. If you are someone who regularly watches Fox, try watching CNN or MSNBC for at least 5 minutes. If you’re someone who regularly watches CNN, try watching Fox.

If you don’t want to use the news for this experiment, try some other part of your life. Read a fiction book if you normally non-fiction (or vice versa).

It could even be as simple as drinking Pepsi if you’re a dedicated Coke fan.

While the point of this 5-minute exercise is not to make light of the important issue, it is a small experiment in a very important principle in the conversation: Opening your perspective

As Sergeant Michael pointed out, our perspective can be really limited (even when we think it’s not!) and that can lead us to close out anyone who thinks differently. This doesn’t help us understand what’s really going on.

Stepping out of your comfort zone, even if it’s just for 5 minutes, is a way to practice growing your perspective so you can understand more of what’s going on. This makes you more informed and more powerful, regardless of what you think.

Conor is now married with a baby boy. He runs a transportation company called ArdentX which specializes in the transportation of goods throughout America.

Our world has contracted.

The COVID 19 pandemic has launched us into an unimaginable new era where social distancing and isolation have become our new normal.

In today’s episode of The Adverse Effect, we talk to Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos, Assistant Professor and Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos is the co-founder and co-director of Medicine for the Greater Good, a community engagement initiative for healthcare professionals in training that allows them to have meaningful partnerships with the local community. His research focus is on community engagement and health disparities.

Have you ever heard of the 7/11 rule?

In today’s episode of The Adverse Effect, we talk to PK Kersey, President and founder of That Suits You.

When, at the age of 22, PK needed to attend a job interview, his pastor stepped in and brought him a suit. This very act of kindness was a pinnacle moment — not only did this fan the flames of confidence and secure him the role, it inspired PK to encourage this sense of confidence in others.

That Suits You is an organization providing men with professional attire to help them get back to work. The organization also does the same for high school seniors for prom and graduation. However, attire is only part of their vision. That Suits You also offers workshops and training concerning the importance of image and manhood as well as thinking beyond the norm of one’s abilities and expectations. Since its inception, the organization has helped 8,300 individuals.

For many parents, finally getting a diagnosis for your child’s condition should be a breath of fresh air. With a diagnosis, you can figure out what to do. You can find treatment. You can find support.

But, for Winifred Winston, just getting a diagnosis for her daughter was an expensive and confusing run-around. She dealt with specialists who couldn’t “assess’ her daughter’s condition even though they confirmed she had every symptom of a learning disorder. Winifred had to pay thousands just to get an “official” diagnosis and even more money getting her daughter into a school that could support her child.

Yet, in spite of these challenges, Winifred didn’t become bitter. She didn’t lose motivated and stop being the loudest and most informed advocate for her daughter.

But, Winifred also took it one step further than advocating for her child.

She became an “adversity” superhero.

She turned her financial, emotional, and paperwork struggles into advocacy. She reached out to other parents and began to form networks. She reached out to professional support groups and began to work with them.

She became more.

Oftentimes, when we find ourselves in a confusing and stressful situation, it can feel so easy to get bitter or angry. We blame “them”.We blame ourselves. She became a school administrator in a school for children with learning disabilities.

She didn’t stay in the “blame game” because blame never solves the problem. It only pushes the solution further away from you.

By taking ownership of the situation, instead of blaming others, Winifred brought solutions and connections that brought even more solutions.

That is the key. Being comfortable in providing solutions versus blame. By taking ownership of the solution, she was able to create a solution that worked for her family along with other families.

Tips from Winifred’s story that can on advocacy:

Focus on solutions while you should acknowledge blame, you should not wallow in it. As shared above, wallowing in the “blame game” gives you more blame to deal with. A better approach is to find what you need and a pathway to get there. If you don’t know a possible solution, make that your first mission.

Identify supporters, mentors, and connectors While you’re advocating, you will run across people who could play different roles in the journey. Some people will provide emotional, financial, or social support. Others will teach you important lessons, Still, others may connect you to others. Some people will play more than one role. Honor these roles in your journey. These people will help support you, as a person, and your mission.

Take care of yourself No matter what happens, make sure you take care of yourself. As Winifred pointed out, you can’t advocate effectively, if you aren’t the best version of yourself. While advocating, be sure to take care of your physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and social health. Remember, a tree nourishes itself in the ground before it nourishes others.

If you think about it, we face obstacles all day. A slow driver in traffic, an email that says you need to meet with the boss RIGHT NOW, or your favorite type of food being out of stock at your favorite grocery store.

Yet, somehow, we overcome these obstacles.

We might curse the slow driver out, but we still move slowly toward our destination. We might say another curse word when we get that “come to the office” email, but we drag ourselves to the office and handle it. We might complain that our favorite food is out of stock on social media, but we eventually find something to eat.

Then, there are obstacles that knock the spirit out of you: a divorce, loss of a job, financial setback, breakup, or a death. Whatever it is, you are totally unprepared to deal with the situation like you do with everyday obstacles.

You’ve hit rock bottom.

There are plenty of articles and advice for people who have hit rock bottom. This advice will tell you to focus on your health and relationships.

That’s good advice. It’s the right advice.

But, this post focuses on something different. This post focuses on what you shouldn’t keep repeating to yourself while you’re climbing out from rock bottom.

  1. It won’t get better than this moment. Hitting rock bottom might feel like a situation that you never ends. The truth is, every moment changes. The problem is, our brains are so focused on the problems that it cannot understand a simple truth: Everything is changing. The key to realizing this truth, even when you’re in rock bottom is taking one step based on this belief. By acting on one positive thought, you have the power to change your world.

  2. No one understands. Another painful belief when you hit rock bottom is the feeling that no one understands you. Not being understood hurts because it ties into the belief that “it won’t get better”. In reality, almost every situation you face has been faced by someone else, now or in the past. That is why finding stories of people who have gone through the same adversity (or a similar one) is so important. By learning the practical steps and mentality of someone else who has gone through adversity, you can find someone who understands.

  3. No one cares. When we assume no one cares, everything hurts even more. In this situation, our brains believe that people only care for if we act a certain way, have a certain title, or have certain things. In some cases this is true. Some people only care because of what we can do for them. But, in our close relationships (our close friends, our partners, etc.), this is not true. The care of a friend or a spouse should not depend on anything for them to care.

Breaking up with these beliefs (“No one cares. No one understands. It won’t get better.”) is the key to taking a step out from under rock bottom. You can’t think yourself out of rock bottom, but you will never get from the bottom if you don’t start planning your steps to the top.

Getting Rich Thoughts: The Problem with “Secret” to Getting Rich

If you are a fan of books like “The Secret”, you may be wondering why it’s so hard to manifest money with your thoughts.

After all, most people assume that the “secret” is about thoughts, right?

Well, partly……

Manifesting money in your life is about having the right thoughts, but it doesn’t work as you would expect.

Making more money starts with thinking about money in a new way. The problem is, most people focus on what they want when it comes to money, not what they will do.

As a result, they don’t change how they work. They change what they desire.

This doesn’t add up because we know that desiring something without putting in the work leads to unrealistic fantasy. Instead of creating a path to a million dollars, we buy a $1 lotto ticket and hope we get the winning ticket.

While there is nothing wrong with buying lotto tickets, there is a problem in believing that you only need a winning ticket to fix your money problems.
The Curse of Quick Money: Why Lotto Winners Don’t Always Win
Don’t believe me? Check the stats on the success rates of most lottery winners within the first 5 years

As you can see, the problem with desiring money isn’t always the “money” part. It’s the “what kind of person will you be when you get the money” part. It’s the thoughts and behavior that determine what will happen to your money once you receive it. In short, you need to be the person that knows how to build wealth, rather than just receive money.

We’re all born knowing how to receive money. Just open your hand. On the other hand, people with money know how to receive and build more money through their talents and skills. This way, you can manage your money, even if face an unexpected crisis, as these billionaires did.

This principle of putting in the work, plus having the right mindset is the key to creating wealth that lasts.

Need Money? Change Your Stories First
You might be saying, “I get it. I can’t get money just by wishing it…but what do I do?”

The first thing (which most people tend to skip) is to change your stories about money.
We all have ideas about money:
● You have to work hard for your money
● If I don’t work, I’m going to lose my house
● The rich keep getting richer, while the poor keep getting poorer

Whether these ideas are true or not is not the point. What is the point is the stories you tell yourself about those ideas.

For example, if you believe that “the rich keep getting richer, while the poor keep getting poorer”, you might ignore financial advice because you’re not one of the rich people. Similarly, if you believe that you are one of the “rich”, you might ignore financial advice as well, because you’re one of the rich people.

Both situations aren’t good.

That is the epiphany podcast guest Violette de Ayala had that transformed her view about money. By changing her story from “I’ll never get money. This is all I will ever get in life” to “This is a way I can earn more money”, Violette began to change her story. By changing her story, Violette changed how she acted.

Getting Money: It’s All a Story
By changing how she acted, Violette began the process of changing her life. She began to learn from a new group of people. She changed the way she acted with money. She changed everything, little by little…and she started to earn more money, and build wealth for her struggling family.

That is how you build a wealth that lasts. This is how you build a wealth that can build and rebuild, no matter what comes your way.

Being a burn survivor has many challenges: many people see the physical scars, however, there are also mental and emotional scars, which can be even more difficult to accept. Shawn Simmons was an inner-city youth from Newark, New Jersey who, despite violence, drugs and bad influences in his neighborhood, used education as a tool to get out of those conditions.

As a first-generation college student, Shawn attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ in the fall of 1999 on a full-ride scholarship.

It would be the morning of January 19, 2000 whilst Shawn and roommate Alvaro Llanos slept, that a drunken fraternity prank gone wrong would change their lives and futures forever.

When two fraternity college students set fire to a banner on a bulletin board and slipped away without pulling any alarms or alerting residents, no one could have foreseen the devastation this one act would result in. Three students perished and 58 others were injured due to their actions; Shawn and Alvaro were amongst the most severely burned and injured, almost losing their lives.

Today, Shawn and Alvaro travel the country speaking to college and high school students about the most difficult time of their lives and the importance of fire safety and prevention, both, on and off campus. Their story is one of overcoming adversity — becoming comfortable in their burned skin — and how their bond with each other helped them get their lives back. It's also a journey of forgiveness towards the individuals convicted of starting the fire.

“I always tell people that...a burn survivor or any survivor of any type of accident or any type of illness is still a human being.” — Shawn Simmons

“I always tell people, if you see a burn survivor — if you're curious to know what happened to that person — ask them their story, they’ll most likely open up.” - Shawn Simmons

“Our scars are our story, so if you want to know my story and you see my scars, just ask me.” - Shawn Simmons

“... the question comes — if you could have changed the direction in which you went to avoid the fire would you have done it and I always answer...absolutely not. I always feel if we didn’t go that way, if we would have made the left instead of made the right, I wouldn’t be here to share this journey right now and I survived for a reason.” - Shawn Simmons

*“You can never know what your adversity is going to be, but it's how you persevere through your adversity.” - Shawn Simmons*

“I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.” - Shawn Simmons

Today on The Adverse Effect:

  • Shawn talks about his journey out of the inner city and adjusting to the diversity of college campus life.

    • Listen as Shawn retells the harrowing events on the night of the fire.

  • Discover some of the positives that resulted from Shawn’s tragedy.

    • Shawn shares his unexpected journey into becoming an inspiring national speaker and advocate for fire safety.

 1. 5 minutes: Watch a clip from the movie “After the Fire”, which covered the incident. (Caution: Some scenes might be too realistic for younger children

In a previous episode of The Adverse Effect, Ken talked with Joshua Proby about breaking free of obstacles and negative thinking that keeps us trapped.

Joshua has a unique perspective on this because he served 12 years in prison.

Yet, the startling insight that Joshua shared is: Most people who are in prison aren’t behind physical bars.

Joshua was referring to the mental, physical, and spiritual beliefs and actions that keep us stuck. These are the “invisible prisons” (aka “baggage”) that we don’t see but have an impact on what we believe and how we act. It’s the kind of baggage that makes us afraid to leave a bad relationship or pursue a certain career, or any number of things.

It’s important to remember that how we think can keep us imprisoned or set us free.

Having “free” thoughts takes work., but necessary, if you want to achieve the life of your dreams. As the quote attributed to Albert Einstein says, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

In other words, you can’t reach your dream life while carrying your baggage with you.

To begin releasing that drama, you might consider three things:
1. Remember. One of the biggest problems with baggage is that we try to hide it. As Joshua commented, this does not work. Eventually, all of us dealing with baggage reach a point where we can’t hide it anymore. Stop hiding it. Find a friend, write about it, visit a therapist. Do whatever you need to do to confront your past.

  1. Release Once you’ve confronted your past, it’s time to release its hold on you. Create a ritual to help you, if you need it, for example, if you still have a letter from an ex that was full of drama, shred them. If you have something else that reminds you of the past that you want to let go, let it go.

  2. Recycle One of the things about physical and mental trash is that it leaves a residue. Even if you release the past in the physical, you can still be affected. Mentally. That’s why you need to recycle (or reframe) your pain. Instead of focusing on the pain itself, focus on what you learned. Focus on the story that you’re creating. Use those lessons to help someone who may be facing the same thing.

These three-step processes are based on the process Joshua took to break free of the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional baggage he was carrying since childhood As Joshua shared, he tried to sweep the pain under a rug. He thought by hiding (or running away) from his problems, he could find peace.

He didn’t.

By going back to confront the pain of his past, Joshua was able to move forward. He was able to release the hold that his past pain had on him. With that shift in mindset, he was able to find the lessons in that experience. He was able to become a mentor who had real-life advice to other people.

As a result, he became a victor.

Our bodies are defined by what we eat, how we move, and how we think.

Cera Byer, a body acceptance coach and trainer, shared a powerful story with The Adverse Effect of overcoming an eating disorder, obesity, and abuse because of a positive shift in her mindset.

That positive shift was in how she thought about her body. When Cera learned to treat her body with acceptance, she started treating her body with care.

Before then, her body was just an obstacle to her happiness.

Beliefs Gone Wild: Where Our Negative Body Thoughts Come From
Cera’s negative beliefs about her body started with her parents. As she shared, her parents saw the body as something to control. They saw fitness as a way to “fix” imperfections. If you were obese, you were supposed to use whatever it took to get to that “ideal” look.

So, that led Cera’s parents to push their daughter into diets….at the age of 6. Those diets eventually led to a cycle of eating disorders and obesity that Cera had to overcome.

Looking back, Cera no longer blames her parents for this. She understands that they, like most of us, buy into the belief that we will have better lives if we look like the “ideal” man or woman.

This mindset is reinforced early in our lives. Boys are given superheroes with big arms and six pack abs and girls are given dolls who are skinny and with “perfect” proportions.

This is reinforced constantly through TV, social media, and our peers. We are constantly urged to “lose a few pounds” or “lose that gut”. While the intent is framed as getting healthy, there is an underlying tone that our bodies aren’t “right” the way they are.

Cera started to realize this after an accident caused in part by excessive dieting and exercise. She realized that she needed to treat her body with love, not control. By treating her body with love, she could finally be happy building the body she wanted, not the one that “fit” some standard she didn’t’ ask for.

That’s what led her to body acceptance.

From Negative to Body Positive: 6 Practices to Help You Reconnect with Bodily Happiness

In her journey to body acceptance, Cera supported herself with a variety of practices. Some of these practices included:

  1. Dance: From a young child, Sara always loved to express herself through dance. Unfortunately, her negative beliefs about how a dancer “should” look like kept her from fully enjoying the dance.

  2. Education Once Cera realized that the negative beliefs about her body weren’t really based on facts, she started to educate herself on the facts. She became a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and coach. Through that “re-education”, she was able to challenge the beliefs she had about her body growing up.

  3. Community Another support for Cera was her support system, both online and off. Online, Cera gained a community of support by sharing her journey of having an eating disorder. That helped her gain courage, get advice, and get support when she needed it. Offline, her friends helped her navigate many obstacles, from getting legally emancipated to launching a book.

  4. Journaling As mentioned above, Cera shared some of her journeys through eating disorders. Besides the support system it provided, journaling was also an expressive outlet for her. By journaling, Cera was able to reflect on where she was and where she wanted to be.

  5. Boundary setting Once Cera began to take ownership of her own thoughts about her body, she set boundaries. She told her mother that she didn’t want to spend all of their time talking about diets. She wouldn’t allow herself to speak negatively about her body. By creating these boundaries, she was protecting herself from the negative mindsets that made her hate her body.

  6. Self-talk, especially about our bodies is important. As Cera shared, “You can’t judge and love something at the same time.” If you are judging your body because it doesn’t fit a certain standard, you will never be happy with your body. Your body is not designed to fit a “standard”. Your body is designed to live. By reinforcing how you care, instead of judge your body, you change the narrative that runs your body.

The Bottom Line: Our Thoughts Are Powerful
The overall message that Cera learned from her journey is that our minds are truly powerful things. We need to make our minds an ally, instead of an enemy, of our bodies. If our minds continuously tell our bodies, “You aren’t good enough. You don’t look good”, there is no amount of dieting or exercise that will make you happy.. Because of this mindset, we may not take full advantage of the positive support that is already in our lives (like the things mentioned above). Without that positive support, life is just chasing a standard that will outlive you.

As a human, you play many roles in life: parent, sibling, spouse, worker, manager, etc.

Sometimes we can separate the roles. For example, from 9 to 5, I can play the role of “worker”. But there are times when those roles clash. For example, you might be working and you get the call that your child is sick. You might be at your child’s dance recital when you get an urgent call.

It is those moments that you have to juggle.

Unfortunately, as podcast guest Nikita Graves, shares, no one really tells you HOW to juggle your roles. Do you stay at work while your child is sick? Do you leave work? Do you attend the recital?

There are no easy answers and plenty of factors that impact your decisions.

That’s why this article doesn’t focus on specific solutions. It focuses on principles. When trying to juggle between y9ur roles, you need to have a set of guiding principles to default to.

Here are some tips you might consider in defining those principles:

  1. Accept and define the situation. Any time you are caught between two decisions, your first step is to accept and define what is actually going on. When you are dealing with a stressful situation, it’s easy to focus on the overwhelm you feel and not the situation. Focus first on defining what the problem is, what your obstacles are, and your options are.

  2. Get help Do not rely solely on yourself to conquer your day. Yes, we all have times when we can seemingly handle everything we have in our way. Those times are few and far in between, if ever. In truth, we need other humans for almost everything we do. Use that when you need it.

  3. Reach out At the same time, you cannot rely on support if you don’t give support and create value in the first place. How do you do that? By helping others and offering advice or support. You also create value by sharing your truth. When you share your life’s journey at this moment, you create for others to share their truth with you. Such stories are powerful in creating powerful relationships among friends and strangers alike.

  4. Go within. Take regular time to get away out of your situation, even for 5 minutes. Sometimes a situation can be so overwhelming that you need to step away from it. Even if you can’t do this physically, you can do this mentally. Close your eyes and breathe for at least a minute. (preferably 5 minutes or more). For that moment, nothing has changed. Breathe again and then return.

  5. Do your best. Realize that no there will be times that you won’t be able to win. You will have times when you don’t make the right decision. You might miss the pivotal recital that your child always wanted you to go to. You might miss an important meeting or come late. This will happen. There will be times when you arrive late to the meeting smelling like baby powder or go to the recital in your business clothes. It’s all OK. You are doing the best. Do your best and laugh at all the other moments along the way.

Living
While it’s often easier to mentally put people in a box (“He’s a doctor” or “She’s a manager”), we cannot forget that people have many lives. They are mothers, fathers, employees, employers, and more. On top of that, they are creators, consumers, teachers, mentors, influencers, and more. The number of roles we will have to play will increase with the rise of the gig economy and technology.

For example, with a simple click, a mother can go from family driver to Uber contractor. No one sees this change, but it happens…and it happens all of the time.

As individuals, we must be aware of the clashes that can happen with this. The more roles we play, the more decisions we have to make. The more we prepare in advance, the better off we will be.

Ken is joined by Jay Thornton, Founder of The Hubris Company for an incredible, perspective shifting conversation.

Jay has an outlook on adversity that has been shaped by his many unique experiences. Growing up he moved around a lot, going to four different high schools. Focusing on basketball earned him a full college schoarlship, where he suffered a major injury.

After a long recovery he played professional basketball overseas, again his season was cut short and he came back unsure of what he wanted.

He then found himself homeless, where he gained a new perspective to which he built the foundation of his future on.

The next step into that future was to spend four years in the United States Air Force.

After leaving the Air Force Jay Founded The Hubris Company. A hand-made and 100% chemical-free line of hair and skin care products for men and women.

I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really, get busy living or get busy dying.”

—Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman)

For Kansas City native Wesley Hamilton, the decision to no longer remain at the mercy of his disability came well after the shooting that left him paralyzed from the waste down, the near-death coma he later he recovered from and the prognosis that he would never regain the function of the lower half of his body.

For this young man, living life on his terms began by the prophetic words of his then four-year old daughter, “My daddy is in his Superman chair.”

Today, Ken sat down with this once self-admitted insecure and overweight kid from East Kansas City, rapped about how he became a rebound founder and philanthropist, an award-winning adaptive athlete and motivational speaker after, whose complete physical, emotional and spiritual transformation all but defy the laws of nature.

Wesley opens up about the challenges he faced growing up without an accessible father or male role model at home, the choices that lead to his life- altering brush with death, struggles with his own body image and how trying to fit in eventually led him to become a product of his environment.

Wesley and ken both get vulnerable the ways self-esteem issues black men bury in their childhood to avoid appearing soft, often resurface into our adult hood, the residual effects of unaddressed emotional emptiness turns into addiction, anger, violence or an unhealthy obsession with creating the appearance of

being unbothered and how that ultimately pushes those we need most away.

Wesley touches on how he reprogrammed his perspective, found joy in his road to a renewed purpose and how very small, yet intentional decisions formed the snowball that allowed him to lose an astonishing 100lbs. in a twelve-month time span, the nurse who encouraged him to begin his non-profit foundation, Disabled but Not Really, how he got into competitive body building well-after his accident and the deliberate investments in himself, his purpose and his daughter that have paid-off in unimaginable ways.

I don’t care who you are, this story is for you and you will be influenced to dig deep within yourself and become greater than your adversity after listening to this episode. Wesley story is one of survival, determination, discovery and abundance.

The way Wesley repeatedly commits himself to excellence without fear and the desire to experience life on his own terms and ferociousness he attacks his dreams and vision with are at the core of what this podcast is all about, so download this episode. I’m sure it is one you will revisit.

Main Topics:

This week we discussed emotional development, overcoming personal challenges, discovering and operating in your purpose, overcoming your environment and other challenges blocking you from living your best life, addiction, anger, insecurity, the value in discovering yourself in isolation, the importance of positive self-affirmations and how extraordinary determination, commitment and daily steps forward can be the phone booth that stands between the Clark Kent you are, and the Superman you have the potential to become.
