On this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul podcast, host Lisa Marie Burwell, VIE’s CEO/editor-in-chief, spoke with restaurateur, businessman, speaker, and author Kevin Boehm and a very special guest, Oliver Petit, owner of The Red Bar in Grayton Beach, Florida.
In the first half of the interview, Kevin and Oliver share stories from the very beginning of their friendship, spanning multiple decades since Kevin came to Seaside in 1993. Kevin explains that his childhood was not a happy one, and for that reason, he wanted to curate and build his own chosen family, which Oliver fit right into. Kevin opened his first restaurant, Lazy Days Café, in the area. In 1995, Kevin opened Indigo Wine Bar, and Oliver opened The Red Bar. Oliver recalls his own journey in the hospitality industry, as well as the heart-wrenching story of The Red Bar burning down just a few years ago. He was able to rebuild it almost exactly as the original had been—with some improvements—and we were excited to film this episode on location there.
In the second half of the interview, Lisa and Kevin dive into Kevin’s new book, The Bottomless Cup. He takes readers and now listeners on a journey through his childhood, his relationship with his mother, his restaurant career, personal relationships, navigating COVID-19 as a business owner, and the loss of his mother in 2020. A common thread throughout his life seems to be the ability to maintain meaningful and long-standing relationships. Kevin and his business partner, Rob Katz, currently own and operate 26 restaurants in Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New York City through Boka Restaurant Group. The pair won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in America in 2018. Kevin’s autobiography is scheduled for release on November 4, 2025.

On this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul podcast, host Lisa Marie Burwell, VIE’s CEO/editor-in-chief, spoke with Grand Boulevard director of marketing, Stacey Brady.
The energy in this episode is contagious, and we loved hearing the stories Stacey shared! Lisa and Stacey have been colleagues and friends for a span of close to 30 years. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Stacey worked for SEASIDE®️, Florida, for six years. She recalls it being an exciting time, with The Truman Show having just been released and drawing a lot of attention to Seaside, both nationally and internationally. A recurring theme within Stacey’s career is a passion for doing more. She led the way and wrote the submission for Seaside for an Urban Land Institute (ULI) award. The town not only became a finalist, but actually won "Best in Show." Stacey then began working with Grand Boulevard Town Center in Miramar Beach in 2006. After a few hiccups along the way, like the commercial real estate fallout and the BP oil spill in 2009, the vision for the property became a reality with beautiful architecture, shops, restaurants, and exciting events. Stacey was also instrumental in creating the concert venue on the north lawn at Grand Boulevard that has since hosted Darius Rucker in 2012, the 30A Songwriters Festival Main Stage, and other great performances. This episode will have you smiling from start to finish!

On this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul podcast, host Lisa Marie Burwell, VIE’s CEO/editor-in-chief, spoke with Churchill Oaks developer/visionary, Roy Sembera.
Lisa and Roy discuss the origin story of Churchill Oaks, a beautiful gated community that Roy and his wife Wendy envisioned in 2010, which embodies quiet luxury and true Southern elegance on the Choctawhatchee Bay in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Currently, Phase 1 sits on 42 acres. Phase 2, nearing its launch, will cover 15 acres, and Phase 3 will bring 15 additional acres of an elevated lifestyle. The community boasts numerous amenities, including miles of trails and boardwalks, two spring-fed lakes, a playground, and a private marina and clubhouse, with pickleball courts and more to come in Phase 2. The Semberas' home, in particular, combines personal design and high-quality craftsmanship. Although not many developers live in the community they built, it was always the intention for Roy and his family. During the interview, Roy and Lisa speak of the many parties, benefits, and gatherings the Semberas have planned and hosted, with Fourth of July being the most recent. Their goal was to create a true family-oriented community for the homeowners that values connection and integrity, and they are doing just that!

Lisa and Mark reflect on his start into photography which came when Mark's first child was born. He's had a hand in all types of photography such as food, portrait and architecture. The transition into videography was somewhat seamless and Mark credits that to having started in photography first. Mark's catalog in videography and filmmaking is just as extensive. From E.F. San Juan's video series, Real Wood, to working as the Director of Photography for the documentary film, Jackie Cochran. Mark is now filming commercial productions for some of the biggest brands like Porsche, Wall Street Journal and HGTV to name a few. Mark blends the art of photography and the power of videography to create stunning, soul-filled content that speaks louder than words!
In this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul, our host, VIE Editor-In-Chief Lisa Burwell, sits down with Stephanie Harlowe. Stephanie is a documentarian and a true crime YouTube creator who began her journey in 2017. Stephanie's goal from the very beginning was to give a voice to those who were silenced. Her passion first manifested in the interest of learning about history and storytelling. Her YouTube channel did not initially take off, but was a gradual process. When covering the Madeleine McCann story, thanks to the algorithm and luck, she saw her channel gaining traction. Stephanie was always focused on finding her audience, her voice and making sure every story, big or small was told. But what was evident from the start was her passion to help others. At the Redfish Film Festival, Stephanie featured Strange and Unusual: The Montauk Project. The story is based on rumors surrounding US Navy air base, Camp Hero. Allegedly, they conducted experiments and attempted to use supernatural or psychic means to make ships invisible to radar.

In this special Redfish Film Festival episode of VIE Speaks, host and VIE editor-in-chief Lisa Marie Burwell sits down with documentary filmmaker Carrie Lederer to discuss her recent film, Wild Horses at the Door. As part of the Redfish Film Fest 2025 lineup, this movie brought the heartfelt and harrowing story of John Wayne Smith to the screen. Thank you, Carrie, for sharing this story and being a guest on VIE Speaks!
About Wild Horses at the Door
Coloradoan John Wayne Smith was homeless for eight years, working through recovery, when he resettled himself off-grid on a high desert mesa where wild horses roamed. A wounded pregnant mare showed up at his door, and John nursed her back to health, later delivering her foal, which he affectionately named Blizzard. The profound bond set into motion an unexpected healing journey into the wonderful world of wild horses.
Four years later, we meet John, who coexists with several bands of mustangs that he has come to know intimately in a way few people have experienced. Living with a hundred wild horses and a mule has given him an alternative path versus a system that he felt was not serving him; however, living the life of a rugged individualist alone on a mesa presents its own set of challenges, even for someone named after tough guy John Wayne. John also eventually realizes that the resource scarcity he was familiar with when he was homeless may threaten his beloved mustangs.

True creative spirits at heart, twin brothers Joshua and Jared Thompson belong to a musical family and began playing piano at a young age. Jared later picked up the saxophone as his chosen specialty, and both have become revered within their home city of Indianapolis and around the US.
Known onstage as "Sock Joplin," Joshua Thompson is a pianist, music sociologist, and lecturer recognized nationally for his expertise in classical composers of African descent. A recipient of numerous awards and national fellowships, Thompson has completed residencies at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, University of Puget Sound, University of Louisville, Seaside, FL, University of Nebraska Omaha, and currently serves as the Creative Partner in Residence with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.
Saxophonist, composer, and arranger Jared Thompson is a Denison University alumnus who formed the jazz quintet Premium Blend in 2007. Premium Blend appears in two national award-winning documentaries, "Go Get Your Horn" and "Chatterbox: A Love Letter." In 2019, the band was awarded a commission by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and directed. Its members produced the mini-documentary "38th & Postmodernism," which addressed the myriad social tensions at the forefront of America’s mind throughout 2020.
The Thompson brothers recently partnered with vocalist AshLee "PsyWrn Simone" Baskin (pronounced Sī-ren Si-mōn) to perform as The Sock Joplin Trio on a national tour. "A Journey Into Sound" welcomed guests to The REP Theatre in Seaside, Florida, on November 15 and 16, 2024, for a lively tribute and discovery of Black music through the ages, along with originals by the trio members, who were accompanied onstage by local musicians from the Seaside area.
Join VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul host Lisa Marie Burwell for a special episode recorded at The REP as she goes more in-depth with Joshua and Jared about their love of music and performance, a mission to share and honor the work of Black composers throughout history, and how the arts can positively impact communities, even in dark times. A big shoutout to The REP for hosting us and bringing these incredible musicians to Northwest Florida!

As a budding outdoorsman growing up in northern Virginia, Kurt Tobias never dreamed of founding a clothing brand one day. While fishing and fashion might not seem to mesh, Tobias and his team at Choona have proved that technical wear for the avid sportsman can be more than just khakis and cargos. The company’s lightweight, stylish, and functional clothing has already become a favorite among sportfishing enthusiasts, hikers, and beach bums alike along the white-sand Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida. In this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart and Soul, Tobias shares his heart-centered journey from working in engineering to moving to Destin, Florida, and founding Choona. This fateful decision allowed him to fill a missing niche: representing the Panhandle lifestyle with outdoor-centric men’s clothing. This epiphany, in conjunction with Tobias’s great love for all things outdoors, led to the birth of a brand. His mission focused on creating activewear products that he would like to wear and protecting the planet as much as possible in the process. With a purpose and following that extends well beyond the Panhandle, Choona has partnered with nonprofit Give30A; with each garment purchased, malnourished children in Leon, Nicaragua, will be given five free meals, extending consumers’ impact. We invite you to tune into this episode to receive entrepreneurial guidance and firsthand wisdom from Tobias on what it means to fill a gap in the industry in a sustainable, ethical, and pragmatic way, all while keeping heart and soul at the forefront.

Mushroom experts Joey Bohler and Lexi Wroten join the VIE Speaks line-up to share the secret health benefits behind the nutrient-dense superfood. Joey found his passion for mushrooms at the Telluride Mushroom Festival in 2017. On the ride back to Florida, he researched as much as he could about mycology (the study of fungi). Business partner Alexis Wroten later joined the team, and Vale of Paradise now supplies many South Walton, Florida restaurants with premium mushrooms, including Farm & Fire and others owned by Chef Jim Shirley. They also attend the weekly farmers markets in Rosemary Beach, Niceville, Grand Boulevard, and Seaside and are building a new facility and mushroom farm. Their products include foraged mushrooms, mushroom grow kits, tinctures, and dehydrated mushroom jerky. Learn more about this superfood when you give this episode a listen.

Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) eliminates barriers to accessible, affordable health care for Northwest Florida children in need through mobile solutions and community partnerships. Serving nine schools in Okaloosa and Walton counties and assisting organizations such as Children in Crisis and Destin Boys + Girls Club, CVHN’s two state-of-the-art mobile dental clinics provide 100-percent free preventative and restorative dental care to eligible children in grades K through 5. It also recognizes the challenge that lack of access to mental health care presents to children and families. When less than 15 percent of children in poverty receive mental health support, CVHN is adding mental health services to provide needed help for kids and the community. Lisa and CVHN executive director Megan Trent talk about all the nonprofit is doing in 2023, including the second annual Soiree on the Bay fundraiser coming up March 10–11, 2023. Then, Dr. Iysha Cawthon hops on the podcast to discuss how providing children with preventative and restorative dental care not only increased their physical health but also their mental health, confidence, school performance, and more.
