Win Over Depression: Recent Episodes

Tamera C. Trotter

The goal of WIN OVER DEPRESSION is to spread awareness about the Mental Health epidemic and provide insight, and understanding about the daily challenges individuals with mental health issue face. It can be hard to get out of bed in the morning or feel motivated to interact with others. Quite often it feels as though a dark cloud is hovering over you. During the most painful times you just feel ALONE. The clinically depressed individual struggles daily to survive. The mind is the worst enemy they have and they are often trapped inside their thoughts. They make assumptions about their interactions, sometimes become paranoid and have difficulty deciding what is the truth. They feel alone in their pain because they are convinced they are a burden to their family and friends. They have a couple of friends in whom they may confide, but unless you have experienced the deep-rooted sadness and helplessness no one  can really understand the day to day and often moment to moment struggle of mental health disorders. For the most part, sufferers of mental health conditions conceal their mental health diagnosis because society can be cruel and accusatory.  The negative stigmas that surround mental illnesses encourage silence and seeking professional help is perceived to be a weakness."GIVING UP IS NEVER AN OPTION."This podcast will provide the mental health sufferer or their family with insight, tools for survival and "real-life" stories that will teach techniques and ways to thrive despite your circumstances and life a productive life. websites:https://www.winoverdepression.org

Depression can make a single morning feel like a whole lifetime and one of the hardest parts is not knowing whether you’re having a rough patch or sliding into something deeper. We walk through a clear, practical way to tell the difference between temporary depression symptoms and a true depressive episode, especially when motivation drops, sleep gets messy, and daily functioning starts to fall apart. If you’ve ever stared at the alarm, hit snooze, and felt your world shrink, you’ll recognize yourself here and you’ll leave with a plan.

We also lean into faith-based encouragement for mental health, using scripture to remind you that you are not alone and not forgotten, even when you can’t feel God’s presence. That spiritual foundation pairs with action: getting up, moving your body, and choosing one small task that creates momentum instead of letting depression decide the day. We talk about why depression is often undertreated, why honesty is the first step toward healing, and why your identity, value, and purpose are not up for debate just because you’re struggling.

Then we get very specific with three practical steps you can use mid-episode: accept where you are without accepting that you’ll stay there, shrink the day into 10 to 15 minute wins, and stay connected even when depression tells you to isolate. We also encourage professional support, counseling, and sticking to your treatment plan when that’s part of your care. If this helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a quick Apple Podcasts review so more people can find hope and tools that work.

Having a mental illness that results in anxious feelings can feel like a private fog you’re supposed to “pray away” or push through, but that belief keeps too many people suffering in silence. We name the truth clearly: depression is a real mental health condition, it’s common, it’s treatable, and it isn’t a weakness or a faith failure. If you’ve been asking yourself, “Am I just having a bad day, or is this something more,” we offer a steady, practical way to get clarity. Depression causes loneliness and physical health may suffer.

I walk you through what depression is and how it can affect your thoughts, emotions, energy, relationships, sleep, appetite, and even your physical health. You’ll hear a straightforward yes or no self-check you can do with a pen and paper, plus guidance on when it’s time to talk with a licensed mental health professional or health care provider. We also unpack why depression often has multiple causes, including family history, brain chemistry, hormones, chronic stress, grief, trauma, loneliness, and seasons of spiritual weariness.

From there, we shift to hope you can act on. We talk about accepting what you’re facing, choosing support over isolation, and building small daily habits that support healing, like better sleep, nutrition, hydration, movement, time outside, and renewing your thoughts. We also make space for both biblical encouragement and practical care, including counseling and medication when appropriate, because seeking help can be an act of wisdom. Subscribe for more faith and mental health support, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a quick Apple Podcasts review so more people can find hope.

Guilt can feel like proof you’re doing something wrong, but what if it’s simply the growing pains of finally protecting your peace? We get real about what happens when you stop abandoning yourself to keep everyone else comfortable, especially when you’ve lived with mental illness, anxiety, or long-term emotional exhaustion. If you’ve been stretched thin by family pressure, nonstop phone calls, or relationships that leave you drained, you’ll hear language you can actually use and truth you can stand on.

We walk through what “protecting your peace” really means and what it does not mean. It’s not selfishness, bitterness, or shutting people out. It’s learning to guard your heart with wisdom, drawing from Proverbs 4:23 and Philippians 4:7, and becoming discerning about what you repeatedly expose your mind and emotions to. We talk about patterns that steal your stability, the trap of feeling responsible for everyone else’s feelings, and why prayer and wisdom belong together in a faith-based mental health journey.

You’ll also get practical boundary scripts for real life: how to say no without a long explanation, how to stop treating every crisis like your assignment, and how to notice resentment as a signal you’ve overcommitted. We close with a clear reminder that forgiveness doesn’t mean unlimited access, reconciliation requires mutual accountability, and it’s okay to grieve when relationships change.

If you’ve been stuck staring in the rearview mirror of regret, this one is a reset. We’re talking about reclaiming your life from where you are now, not from who you were before the divorce, the loss, the diagnosis, the betrayal, the addiction, or your mental illness. Your story is not over, and your greatest days are not determined by your past. They’re shaped by what you choose to do with today and you can overcome anxiety, sadness and fear.

We dig into what it really means to let go of the past without pretending it didn’t happen. The past can teach you, but it can’t be your permanent address. We explore how depression and anxiety pull you into replaying old conversations and old failures, and why that mental loop keeps you trapped even when you’ve physically moved on. We also talk about faith and Scripture as anchors for hope, including the reminder that God can “do a new thing,” and that setbacks often get louder when you’re closer to a breakthrough.

Most importantly, we make this practical. Confidence doesn’t usually come before movement, it grows because of movement. Faith can look like small steps: getting out of bed, taking a shower, scheduling counseling, taking medication as prescribed, reading one chapter, walking around the block, or making one phone call. Purpose can start during healing, not after it, and your scars don’t disqualify you. They can become your greatest qualification.

If you’re ready to stop giving yesterday permission to control today, press play. Then share this with a friend who needs hope, subscribe for more faith-based depression support, and leave a quick review on Apple Podcasts so more people can find us.

Depression doesn’t always announce itself as a crisis. Sometimes it’s one heavy symptom that won’t lift, and other times it’s a full depressive episode that starts to interfere with daily life. We get specific about that difference, because naming what you’re experiencing can help you choose the next step with less shame and more clarity.

We then move into simple, practical ways to manage depression day by day. We talk about why 15 minutes of sunlight can support mood regulation, sleep, and energy, and why “small” movement still counts. We also get real about depression and self care: taking a shower, making the bed, and keeping basic hygiene can be powerful momentum builders when your mind tells you to stay stuck. From there, we dig into nutrition and mental health, including how high sugar habits can worsen mood swings and how small food swaps can help you feel more steady.

The mindset piece matters too. We walk through changing the narrative of negative self talk into balanced, hopeful thoughts, and why honest conversations with trusted loved ones can reduce isolation. Faith is part of this foundation, including encouragement from Isaiah 41:10 and Philippians 4:8, while still being clear that daily habits are not a replacement for professional mental health treatment when it’s needed. We also share why it’s important to guard what you allow into your spirit, including the voices you keep close.

God feels quiet, your prayers feel delayed, and your mind keeps asking the same question: did He forget me? I’m Tamera Trotter, and I’m walking straight into that tension with you, because faith and depression often collide in the waiting. This conversation is for anyone trying to keep believing while carrying chronic depression, grief, loneliness, anxiety, or a long season that won’t lift.

We unpack what “ultimate faith” really looks like when circumstances grow worse before they get better and God’s timing doesn’t match your expectations. I share how Scripture frames testing as refinement, not rejection, and why the greatest victories are often preceded by the greatest tests. We also tackle the painful misconception that silence equals absence, using stories like Abraham and Joseph and a simple picture of a teacher who stays in the room during the test.

Ready to better understand your symptoms and depression and get a handle on your mental illness? The 14 Days to Manage Depression will give you the tools needed to get past the pain and onto the path to healing. https://www.pensight.com/x/14DaystoManageDepression

Mental health matters here. Depression is not a sign that you lack faith, and seeking counseling, medical care, medication, or other treatment can be fully consistent with trusting God. When life starts pushing back hard, it’s tempting to assume you missed your moment or that God forgot you. We slow down and look at a different possibility: the obstacles, delays, and emotional pressure you’re facing might be the final stretch right before a breakthrough, not the sign to quit.

I share how faith and mental illness can sit in the same room without pretending everything is fine. We talk about chronic depression and discouragement in a real way, then ground the struggle in hope: resistance doesn’t always mean rejection, delay doesn’t mean denial, and your tears and waiting are not wasted. You’ll hear practical anchors for stressful seasons, like doing the next right thing, taking it day by day, and asking God for strength for today instead of trying to carry the whole future at once.

We also dig into the power of words and why your self-talk matters when anxiety and despair are loud. I guide you through affirmations you can speak immediately, then we turn to the story of Joseph as a roadmap for resilience: the pit, the prison, the waiting, and how God can use the process to build capacity, character, and purpose. If you feel like your life looks nothing like what you prayed for, this is your reminder that the pit is not your final address.

Depression can make you feel like you are sinking in quicksand, especially when you love God and still cannot shake the anxiety, fear, stress, or overwhelming thoughts. We sit with that tension head-on and say it clearly: struggling with mental illness does not mean you lack faith, it does not mean you are weak, and it does not mean God has abandoned you. If you have been functioning at work while breaking down in private, or smiling at church while suffering in silence, you are not the only one.

We connect faith and mental health in a way that is honest and practical. We talk about how depression often attacks the mind first and why protecting your mind is critical when negative thoughts get louder and hope feels distant. We lean on scripture as comfort and clarity, including 2 Corinthians 12:9 on grace in weakness, 2 Timothy 1:7 on power, love, and a sound mind, and Isaiah 41:10 on God’s strength for the weary. The goal is not to pretend pain does not exist, but to trust God while walking through it and to remember that the storm cannot last forever.

We also get specific about what healing can look like day to day: rest, boundaries, sunlight, movement, reaching out instead of isolating, and getting real support from a therapist, counselor, pastor, doctor, coach, or trusted friend. Medication can be wisdom. Therapy can be strength. Asking for help can be courage. If you are ready for more support, consider one-on-one coaching focused on emotional wellness, faith, and resilience. Struggling with sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed? Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for being taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety.

Depression doesn’t always announce itself with a dramatic crash. Sometimes it’s the quiet slide: the blinds stay closed, your thoughts get louder, and the smallest tasks feel impossible. We get real about what depression management looks like day to day, week to week, and month to month when your mind feels heavy and your motivation disappears. I’m Tamara Trotter, and I share the honest routines I lean on to protect my mental health before a spiral turns into a setback.

We talk through practical coping skills you can actually use: building structure, planning ahead to avoid dangerous idle time, and catching negative thoughts early so fear doesn’t run the whole day. I share why movement matters even when you don’t feel like it, from swimming to a simple 15-minute walk around your home, plus why getting sunshine can be a powerful mood support. We also get into connection and accountability, because depression thrives in isolation and too many of us suffer in silence thinking we’re a burden.

Then we go where a lot of people avoid going: medication. I explain why taking prescribed medication can be a key part of treatment for depression and mental illness, and why there’s no shame in using every healthy tool available. We end with faith-based encouragement and scriptures that focus on power, love, a sound mind, and renewing your mindset when your brain tries to convince you things won’t improve.

If you’re fighting to stay emotionally steady, press play, take notes, and choose one small step today. Subscribe to Win Over Depression, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find support.

Struggling with mental Illness, sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed? Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety. This episode will help you learn to cope with stress, worry and guilt; reminding you to lean on your faith to see you through.

Stress doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it looks like waking up already tired, snapping at people you love, losing focus, or feeling that heavy mental fog that makes depression harder to manage. We talk honestly about how stress and worry work together, why worry turns into endless “what if” thinking, and how that cycle can trap your mind in fear, uncertainty, and hopelessness.

We also bring the conversation back to faith and to the relief that comes with surrender. We lean on 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:6–7 as a practical framework for Christian mental health, not just encouragement. I share simple, real-world tools you can use today: pause and breathe to settle your body, pray with specifics, write your thoughts down, control the controllables, and speak truth over your life when your mind wants to spiral. Peace is not pretending everything is fine; it’s learning to take problems one step at a time without letting them own you.

If your stress is tied to other people’s problems, hard conversations, or repeating triggers, we walk through how to be proactive instead of reactive. Sometimes the healthiest move is timing, planning, resting, and even “sleeping on it” before you respond. We also talk about gratitude journaling as a way to widen your perspective when depression magnifies the worst-case story.

If this helped you breathe a little easier, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s carrying too much, and leave a quick Apple Podcasts review so someone else can find the same hope.

Are you struggling with sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed? Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for being taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety.

Are you struggling to get out of bed in the morning, have no energy and need help coping with the stress of life? Is your anxiety causing discomfort and disrupting your day? You may be suffering with a mental illness and that's ok.

Depression doesn’t always come with a clear reason. Sometimes it follows loss, trauma, stress, loneliness, or the pressure of everyday life. Other times it shows up like a fog that won’t lift, leaving you exhausted, disconnected, and wondering why you can’t just “snap out of it.” I’m Tamera Trotter, a Christian, social worker, and depression overcomer, and I’m naming the real reasons people suffer from depression so you can stop blaming yourself and start choosing a path forward.

We talk openly about depression symptoms, situational depression, and the reality of chemical imbalance in the brain, including why you have no control over that piece and why getting help is a strong move. I also share my own story of suffering in silence, finally seeking counseling and medication, and learning how to take ownership of my mental health with practical tools and steady faith. If you’ve felt embarrassed, stuck in bed, or distant from joy, you’re not alone and you’re not weak.

We also go to Scripture for honest language and real comfort, from David’s raw words in Psalms 42 to Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 for the weary and burdened to find rest. Then we get practical about what to do next: reach out to a therapist or medical provider, lean on an accountability person, track triggers and patterns, and take small steps that add up. I’ll also challenge you to look at toxic relationships that may be keeping you in bondage to depression and consider boundaries that protect your peace.

Some seasons hit so hard you start asking, “Is there a lesson in this, or am I just sinking?” I’m Tamera Trotter, and I built this conversation for the moments when life feels like quicksand, your faith is waning, and you’re not sure how to take the next step without breaking. The truth I come back to is simple: storms don’t last forever, but how we ride them out can shape who we become. You can cope with your depression, by knowing the signs. You will feel better mentally and emotionally.

I walk through four anchors for mental health and emotional wellness during hard times: resiliency, courage, faith, and stamina. We get practical about resiliency as your “bounce back” skill, and I’ll ask you to rate yourself so you can spot where you’re strong and where you need support. Then we shift into courage, not as fearlessness, but as choosing action while you’re afraid. If you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, burnout, or constant stress, that distinction can change how you show up today.

To tie it all together, I share a ship-in-a-storm mindset: you can’t control the storm, but you can control your sails, your direction, and your mindset. I also give you a simple daily affirmation to repeat when pressure closes in, and I reflect on Isaiah 41 and the idea of being strengthened over time for what’s ahead. If you’re looking for hope, coping skills, and a steady voice that says “keep going,” press play, then share this with someone who needs it. Subscribe to Win Over Depression, leave a review, and tell me: which anchor do you need most right now?

Depression doesn’t always announce itself, it often slips in through exhaustion, isolation, and the quiet thought, “I can’t do today.” I’m Tamera Trotter, and on Win Over Depression we lean into a different truth: you have resilience inside you, and you can activate it before depression takes hold.

We break down what resilience really means. It’s not pretending you’re okay or forcing positivity. Resilience is the ability to bounce forward with wisdom, strength, and faith after life hits you. We talk about the early warning signs of depression and how awareness becomes your first line of defense. From getting out of bed when you want to disappear, to showering and eating breakfast to jumpstart your energy, we focus on small actions that protect your mental health.

You’ll also hear how faith strengthens spiritual resilience, even in grief. I share a personal loss and what it teaches about hope, prayer, and holding on to meaningful memories. Then we go practical with coping skills and self-care routines that actually fit real life: 15-minute goals, staying connected because isolation feeds depression, using music to lift your mood, and speaking life over yourself with affirmations that reshape your inner voice.

We also explore the difference between coping and resilience, and I walk you through five building blocks you can grow like a muscle: awareness, regulation (including box breathing), perspective, support, and faith. If you’re ready to reclaim your joy one decision at a time, press play, subscribe, and share this with someone who needs hope today. After you listen, leave a review and tell me which building block you’re strengthening first.

Hard days don’t decide your worth—your next small step does. We unpack what it truly means to “win” with depression and why progress, not perfection, is the most powerful metric you can use. From the first brave act of getting out of bed to setting clean boundaries and letting sunlight shift your chemistry, we map out practical, compassionate ways to keep moving when motivation is thin.

We share a new scorecard for victory: hygiene as a win, hydration as a win, opening the curtains as a win, and showing up quietly with friends as a win. You’ll hear how to spot a negative thought without granting it authority, name your feelings so they stop running the show, and protect your energy by saying no without apology. We also talk about the deeper layers—faith that can be as small as a mustard seed, releasing shame that never belonged to you, and trusting that a setback is not the whole story.

Because biology matters, we address medication without stigma and pair it with therapy, gentle movement, and brain-friendly nutrition. Learn why reducing sugar helps mood stability and how foods like salmon, leafy greens, avocados, and walnuts support mental health. We offer grounded safety steps for suicidal urges—delay action, sleep, call your person, take meds, and remember no storm lasts forever—along with encouragement to build an accountability net before you need it.

You’ll leave with a toolkit of tiny, repeatable actions that add up: one boundary honored, one glass of water, one honest text, one light-filled morning. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a win today, and leave a review to help others find hope when they need it most.

The lights are bright, the music is cheerful—and your chest still feels heavy. We open up about the holiday blues with a candid look at grief, anxiety, and the pressure to perform happiness when your heart isn’t there. Together we unpack why this season can intensify hard feelings and how to care for yourself without apology or explanations.

We start by naming what’s real: sadness, irritability, loneliness, and fatigue can surge during the holidays, even for people who don’t usually struggle with depression or anxiety. Then we explore the forces that turn up the volume—expectations, finances, social media comparison, and routines that fall apart just when you need them most. If you’re grieving a loved one, we talk about why traditions can sting and how to create gentler rituals that honor your person while protecting your nervous system.

You’ll hear practical ways to set boundaries that stick, with simple phrases you can use to right-size plans, skip events, or leave early without guilt. We map grounding habits that make a difference fast: steady sleep windows, morning light, short walks, and tech boundaries that quiet the mind. We also share low-pressure approaches to connection so you can ask for support or opt out with care. The through line is compassion—toward yourself first—because joy is not a requirement for survival, and rest is a valid choice.

If the holidays feel heavy instead of bright, you’re not alone. Press play for tools, validation, and a calmer way through the season. If this helped, follow the show, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so others can find these resources.

Are you struggling with sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed? Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for being taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety.

When life feels like a storm you can’t outrun, the answer isn’t force—it’s a better compass. We break the crisis into four pillars you can actually use when emotions surge: resilience to bounce back, courage to act while afraid, faith to steady your direction, and stamina to keep going longer than the weather. Through vivid imagery, a ship bracing for high waves and headwinds becomes a practical mindset you can return to when you’re overwhelmed by depression, doubt, or daily stresses that stack up.

We start with resilience as a skill, not a mood, and spell out small, workable moves that reset your nervous system and restore agency in minutes. Courage follows as a practice of boundaries and first steps—sending the message, making the call, or saying no—while fear rides in the passenger seat. Faith anchors the journey with a reminder that tests can harden you to difficulty, preparing you for wider influence and bigger responsibilities. Whether your faith is rooted in God, purpose, or community, the compass stays true through routine, reflection, and a short daily affirmation you can memorize.

Stamina ties it all together with sustainable rhythms: sleep windows, hydration, movement, and a one-choice-at-a-time approach to progress. You’ll hear a concise affirmation to repeat when the wind rises—“I am resilient, I am courageous, I have faith, I endure, and I will ride out this storm”—plus a reframing of setbacks as training for future strength. If you’ve felt stuck in quicksand or worn thin by long seasons of hardship, this conversation offers clarity, tools, and a hopeful perspective you can put to work today.

If this helped you breathe easier and stand taller, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs courage today, and leave a quick review so more people can find these tools. Your voice helps others find their way through the storm.

Some days caregiving feels like carrying the sky, and other days it feels like catching light through a window you almost missed. We go deep into what it means to show up when it hurts, to advocate without fear, and to find grace when the world is loud and support is thin. Drawing from real caregiving moments, we talk about long nights, difficult calls, and the quiet relief that arrives when a voice you trust enters the room. We honor the work as sacred, not because it is easy, but because it dignifies the person you love and reveals a strength that is both gentle and unwavering.

We explore practical advocacy—how to challenge a plan, ask better questions, and persist until you get the clarity your loved one deserves. We share why self-care is nonnegotiable, offering ways to rest without guilt so your presence stays steady and kind. Along the way, we highlight how caregiving expands the heart, teaching compassion that is deeper, wiser, and more discerning. The smallest wins become anchors: a calmer breath, a small smile, a peaceful hour after a hard day.

You’ll hear affirmations written for weary caregivers, reminders that you are seen, valued, and never alone. If you’ve wondered whether your work matters, consider this your proof: love in motion changes rooms, calms storms, and keeps hope alive. Press play for grounded encouragement, faith-forward perspective, and tools you can use in the next hard moment. If this conversation lifted you, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who needs strength tonight.

Have you ever felt like you're drowning in quicksand, unable to take another step forward? That overwhelming sense of despair—beyond mere sadness—is what we tackle head-on in this powerful episode.

The journey through depression's darkest valleys requires us to become change agents in our own lives. When everything feels impossible, remember this transformative truth: the darkest hour only has 60 minutes. Time continues to pass, bringing with it the potential for change, but that change rarely happens without our participation. Even the smallest actions—taking a shower, walking to the mailbox, or warming up leftovers—create momentum toward recovery when depression has you pinned down.

We explore why incremental steps matter so profoundly during mental health struggles. The sedentary lifestyle that often accompanies depression creates a vicious cycle: physical inactivity leads to muscle aches, lack of nutrition depletes energy, and isolation deepens despair. Breaking this cycle requires conscious effort, especially when it feels impossible. Sometimes depression wins the day, and that's okay—retreating temporarily to gather strength for tomorrow is part of the journey. What matters most is that we don't permanently surrender to despair.

Our greatest struggles often become our most powerful testimonies. Though it may not feel possible in the moment, the challenges we overcome strengthen our resilience and equip us to help others facing similar battles. When overwhelmed by negative thoughts, we must intentionally redirect our focus—perhaps by turning on music, engaging in a different activity, or deliberately choosing positive thoughts.

Ready to transform your mental wellness journey? Join my 14 Days to Mental Health Wellness course on TikTok under Tamara Trotter. Packed with positive affirmations, a daily mood tracker, and guidance videos, it's your roadmap to reclaiming joy and resilience. Remember: your life is valuable, and staying in the game, even when it feels impossible, reveals just how strong you truly are.

• Practice immediate self-care after disappointment: shower, eat, change your environment
• Create a proactive plan for handling setbacks before they occur
• Build resilience through small, consistent steps forward
• Remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
• Strengthen your self-talk with phrases like "This moment is tough, but so am I"

Commitment forms the backbone of our lives, from promises to our loved ones to professional obligations, but the quality of these commitments significantly impacts our mental health. Today we explore how to evaluate promises, recognize overcommitment, and make necessary changes to better manage depression.

• A commitment is a promise to deliver an expected outcome, including the promises we make to ourselves about mental health management
• Self-evaluation means asking if you're truly committed to your mental health journey or just going through the motions
• Overcommitment is a societal addiction that can severely impact mental wellbeing and recovery
• Your physical space directly correlates with mental health—creating clutter-free areas can immediately improve concentration
• Learning to say no is essential self-care, even when it means disappointing others
• Change is inevitable and developing adaptability makes managing mental health easier

Depression creates a cycle of worry and stress due to chemical imbalances in the brain that require proactive management and consistent daily practices. Accepting a mental health diagnosis and seeking treatment both present challenges, creating a "rock and hard place" situation that requires determination to overcome.

• Depression causes the brain to function differently, leading to constant worry and anxiety
• Chemical imbalances (lack of serotonin) are the primary cause of depression
• Depression often runs in families, making those with family history more susceptible
• Anxiety from depression can become severe enough to require hospitalization
• Morning showers provide essential energy to start the day positively
• Getting 15 minutes of sunlight daily helps improve mood
• 10-15 minutes of daily exercise increases endorphins that affect mood
• Accomplishing at least two goals daily creates momentum and energy
• Breaking large tasks into smaller segments makes them more manageable
• Three steps to defeat worry: avoid others' problems, stay ahead through self-care, channel energy positively
• Depression can make you believe things that aren't true or make mountains out of molehills
• Even after 80 episodes, the host still experiences depressive episodes
• Suicide is never an option - your absence would create immeasurable pain for loved ones

Depression doesn't define your worth, and behind every mask of high-functioning depression lies a person deserving rest and authenticity. We explore how to break free from the performance trap of smiling through your storms while silently suffering inside.

• You are not your diagnosis – mental illness is real but doesn't determine your identity
• Healing isn't linear, and small wins like getting out of bed or taking a shower count
• High-functioning depression means doing all the right things while silently sinking inside
• Being productive doesn't mean you're peaceful, and being available to others doesn't mean you're true to yourself
• Three steps to try: tell the truth to someone you trust, rest without apology, check in with your needs daily
• Speaking positive affirmations like "I am wonderfully made" helps promote better mental health
• Sometimes we must act as if we feel better even when we don't

Depression transforms your mind into a battlefield where worry, stress, and even paranoia can take root and flourish. After hosting 80 episodes over three years, I've learned that understanding this connection is crucial to breaking free from depression's grip.

When you're diagnosed with chronic depression, your brain chemistry physically changes. The lack of serotonin doesn't just cause sadness—it creates a cascade of worry that can feel impossible to escape. You find yourself caught between accepting your diagnosis and dealing with treatment challenges. But there's hope in taking proactive, daily steps to reclaim control.

The most powerful weapons against depression are surprisingly simple: that morning shower that energizes you, 15 minutes of sunlight that boosts your endorphins, 10-15 minutes of daily movement, and accomplishing just two small tasks each day. These aren't just feel-good suggestions—they're evidence-based strategies that directly combat depression at its source. Breaking large, overwhelming tasks into 25-minute segments makes the impossible suddenly manageable.

I practice what I share. Just last week, I struggled with heightened depression symptoms after losing a friend. The techniques I'm sharing pulled me through, as they have countless times before. Depression isn't something we cure—it's something we manage daily with consistent effort and compassion toward ourselves.

If you're listening in the darkness wondering if life is worth continuing, please know that giving up is never an option. Suicide transfers pain rather than eliminating it. Stay in this fight—if not for yourself right now, then for those who love you. Tomorrow brings new possibilities. Listen back to previous episodes for more strategies, connect with us on social media, and consider supporting our mission to reduce suicide rates with an $80 donation to mark our 80th episode. Your life matters, and together, we can win over depression.

Commitment is the foundation of managing mental health effectively, requiring honest self-evaluation of the promises we've made in our lives and to ourselves. The extent to which we suffer from mental illness is largely determined by our personal commitment to managing our condition and implementing effective self-care strategies.

• Commitment defined as "a promise to deliver the outcome someone is expecting"
• Need to evaluate how committed we are to improving our mental health
• Dangers of being over-committed and the importance of saying no
• Connection between cluttered physical spaces and declining mental health
• Creating at least one or two clutter-free areas to improve focus and concentration
• Embracing change as a constant and predictable part of life
• Celebrating every improvement, no matter how small it might seem

The crushing weight of depression isn't just sadness – it's an overwhelming force that makes even getting out of bed feel like scaling Mount Everest. When every day becomes a battle against invisible chains, how do you find the strength to keep going?

We dive deep into the paradox of depression: feeling hopelessly stuck in a cycle where every attempt to improve seems futile. This isn't about lacking willpower. It's about being fundamentally disconnected from hope and purpose. For those in the depths of depression, suicide often seems like the only escape from relentless mental exhaustion. Yet there are pathways forward, even when they're difficult to see.

The journey to recovery isn't linear, but it begins with manageable steps. Breaking down overwhelming challenges into five-minute tasks creates small victories that gradually rebuild hope. We explore how self-compassion counteracts the harsh inner critic that constantly questions your worth, and why finding purpose beyond yourself – becoming someone else's beacon of hope – provides powerful motivation when you can't find it within.

Cognitive distortions reinforce negative thought patterns, making mindset work essential. Our 14 Days to Mental Health Wellness course offers practical tools to develop positive habits, track progress, and find daily inspiration. The course includes a free coaching session to help you implement these strategies effectively.

Remember that setbacks aren't failures – they're setups for comebacks. Your darkness has a deadline, even when you can't see the light. By sharing your journey, celebrating minor victories, and practicing consistent self-compassion, you can gradually transform depression's narrative from hopelessness to resilience. What small step will you take today?

Depression affects millions and remains the most undertreated condition globally, but there is hope for managing symptoms and reclaiming joy through understanding its causes and seeking appropriate help. Our mental health journey requires acknowledging the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that contribute to depression while taking proactive steps toward healing.

• Depression has biological roots including genetics, brain chemistry, and hormonal imbalances that predispose certain individuals
• Childhood trauma and adverse experiences can create lasting mental health impacts even decades later
• Modern lifestyle factors including social media, isolation, and constant connectivity contribute to worsening mental health
• Over 800,000 people commit suicide annually—approximately one person every 50 seconds
• Warning signs of suicide may include withdrawal, lack of future planning, and giving away possessions
• Regular check-ins with loved ones and creating safe spaces for honest conversation can help prevent suicide
• Mental illness is not a life sentence—with proper treatment, support, and self-care, you can lead a fulfilling life

10 Reasons To Slow Down

1- Slow down before you go down.

2- Tomorrow is certainly not promised.

3- When we move to fast we make costly mistakes.

4- When we move to fast we drop our guard and accidents are more likely to happen.

5- When we move to fast we lose strategic thinking ability.

6- We need to slow down and think things through.

7- We need to slow down because there is nothing worth rushing for.

8- We need to slow down because we are precious cargo.

9- When we move to fast it causes anxiety.

10-We need to slow down because fast is not necessarily efficient.

I have suffered from chronic depression for most of my adult life.  As I learned more and more about the disease I realized how vital sharing my story would become.   I started a blog in 2011, which turned into the brand, "Win Over Depression." I have a podcast, YouTube channel and website all called Win Over Depression.

The clinically depressed individual struggles daily to survive. Their mind is the worst enemy they have and they often trapped inside their thoughts. They make assumptions about their interactions, sometimes become paranoid and have difficulty decided what is true. They feel alone in their pain because they are convinced they are a burden to their family and friends. They have a couple of friends in whom they may confide, but unless you have experienced the deep-rooted sadness and helplessness no one can really understand the day to day and often moment to moment struggle of mental health disorders. For the most part sufferers of mental health conditions conceal the fact they suffer with clinical depression because society can be cruel and accusatory. The negative stigmas that surround mental illnesses encourage silence and seeking professional help is perceived to be a weakness.

It is essential in overcoming our mental illness that we have hope. Hope may be the only thing you have to hold onto. Hope will push you to try harder and do better. It is essential to develop healthy relationships with individuals who have a mutual respect for one another and the best interest of one another. In some case ulterior motives present themselves and true agendas come to the surface.

It is usually during challenging times you come to really know the value another has for your friendship. It's easy to be a friend when all is seemingly well and life feels right. However, it is another story when the storms of life come and you need your friend to stand by you; or validate your feelings; reciprocate the support you have given to them or make a sacrifice for you. If you know a friend would not, do for you what you would graciously do for them, stop extending yourself. You will be devastated in the end and possibly suffer a long term depressive episode. Depressed individuals must take extra care and concern because their emotions are delicate and fragile.

You must surround yourself with friends who are trying to understand your depression and are still willing to cope with your tough times, support and love you; but also encourage and lift you up. You need friends who will roll with the hard times and embrace you just the same.

WELCOME to Win Over Depression, I am your host, Tamera Trotter. This podcast is dedicated to shedding light on mental illness through education, experience and real life examples. I have suffered from chronic depression for most of my adult life however, when I decided to become transparent about my diagnosis all of my friends were astonished.

You see, those of us who suffer with a mental illness are experts at masking our true feelings. When the world is sleeping we are up thinking, coping and trying to quiet the thoughts in our head. I know that….. Mental illness does NOT define me nor anyone who suffers with an often times debilitating condition; yet this disease is the most under-treated in the world.

I have learned how to be proactive living with chronic depression and thriving anyway. Suicide has become the number one cause of death in the America. I vow to stop the stigma associated with mental illness and educate everyone on the importance of treating mental health disorders as you would any other medical condition.

It is vital to conduct a mental health assessment of adults and children on a regular basis because the suicide rate of children between the ages of 8-14 is on the rise.

HOW DEPRESSION AFFECTS YOUR LIFE EVERY SINGLE DAY.

  • It affects your physical well-being, resulting in chronic fatigue, sleep problems, and changes in appetite.
  • It prevents you from enjoying and living your life to the fullest
  • You've lost interest in sex or even physical affection
  • It affects your mood, with feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness and dysphoria.
  • Your place is a mess; laundry and dishes are piled up, mail is unopened, etc.
  • We no longer have the same energy and enthusiasm in our relationships.
  • You've been making excuses to friends why you can't get together with them, or you're telling them you're "just too tired."
  • We often prefer to stay home rather than go out, be alone rather than share and talk. We push others away.
  • We become very self focussed and sensitive, easily offended, and quick to snap.
  • As our relationships start to break down, we blame ourselves. We feel worthless, believing that no-one would want to be with us because we don't want to be with ourselves. We push people away and then feel worse because we are alone.
  • It takes you a whole weekend to do chores that used to only occupy a morning.
  • You've really let yourself go - you're wearing clothes that make you look dumpy, you've stopped exercising, you're not shaving unless it's absolutely necessary.
  • It affects the way you think, interfering with concentration and decision making.
  • You miss out on the sun, the moon, the stars, the sky, the universe, and cats & dogs.
  • You're drinking or using drugs to escape the pain.
  • it affects your behavior, with increased irritability and loss of temper, social withdrawal, and a reduction in your desire to engage in pleasurable activities.
  • You lose things, you lose track of things and can't always remember what day it is.
  • You've pretty much stopped eating, or caring what you eat and whether it tastes good.
  • On the flip side, you may be eating all the time because you're bored and hope that food will somehow satisfy the vacant feeling you have.
  • Sleeping difficulties have started creeping in - either difficulty sleeping, erratic sleeping patterns or difficulty staying awake.

Long Suffering is a strength and not a weakness

Often times trials and tribulations permeate our lives and it may seem as though we are standing alone. We are all by ourselves to deal with the blows this unfair life deals us. The reality is, we are never alone. Even during our darkest hour when it seems there is no one to be found.

Long Suffering shapes our character and tests our absolute faith in God. Long suffering teaches patience, endurance and equips us with the wherewithal mentality we need to overcome obstacles, defeat the enemy and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God will never forsake us.

God helps us when we suffer beyond the limits of our own strength. We have all been sufficiently equipped with all that is needed to fulfill our purpose on the earth, achieve our personal dreams and annihilate anything that would keep us from our best.

You cannot give up now because you are so close to a breakthrough and the pouring down of blessings from your heavenly father. It may seem hopeless, it may look impossible, it may be against all odds and your strongest support system may have lost all hope.

Remember, God can move mountains, divinely intervene, and make your enemies build you up. Long suffering will get you where you should be and take you places you never imagined. You are far too important to God to stop short of receiving all that He has for you. I implore you to continue going above and beyond without prompting, continue to give from your heart of gold and God will pour out a blessing where there is not room enough to receive it all.

The Long Suffering that you endure will certainly become your biggest testimony. You are much stronger than you think and you will experience joy in your life much sooner than you think. Your season has come and it is imperative that you keep going, continue to move forward. The best is yet to come.

A special guest on WIN OVER DEPRESSION- Feledier Thrower shares her story about life after losing her parents unexpectedly. They passed away within three weeks of each other in 2021. Feledier is known to her family and friends as someone who is outgoing, fun, full of energy and loves to travel. However, since this profound loss her entire world was changed and she experienced situational depression for the first time in her life. In this episode, she shares her 'real' experience dealing with her emotions and getting to a space where life was worth living again.

We may wonder why tragedy turns our lives upside down?

Why does so much pain have to cross our path?

What did we do to deserve such an insurmountable circumstance to bring our life to a halt?

You did not do anything. Life has its own journey and we are often times subjected to its storm. All we can do is weather what comes our way knowing; it too shall pass.

We can never comprehend nor understand why situations occur in lives. Especially, when we seem to be doing everything above board. All we can do is bravely face whatever comes and figure out how to deal with the outcome. It’s seems life gets harder to cope in our latter years and death is a part of our painful circle of life.

You must become relentless: The clinically depressed individual struggles daily to survive.

Individuals who suffer from mental health disorders put on their game face every day to appear normal. They are not faking when they seem fine and go hang out with friends. But, you have no idea how hard it was for them to get dressed and leave the house. If they appear to be having a good time, this is probably true. However, when they get home, sadness sets in and they begin to feel alone all over again. Next, they must build up the courage to wake up and face another day that may be filled with misery.

If you are trying to make sense over the suicide of loved one do not blame yourself for their act. There may not have been any warning signs so do not beat yourself up. You can play back your last conversation in your mind but it is not your fault if you missed it. You will never know. They were likely already resolved about their decision to commit suicide. It was all about them and not about you. They were in such pain and sadness beyond belief and somehow they believed death was the only way to end their pain. They may not have thought about how their death would affect you. Their mind said, end their existence, end the pain. There death is not your fault, this treacherous disease that effects so many lives is the real culprit.

The best help you can give to someone with a mental illness is to check on them, through a phone call, text, email or face to face visit. Just don’t ignore them. Let them know you care and have thought about how they are doing. You can also encourage them to exercise, get at least fifteen minutes per day of sunshine, listen to upbeat music, keep a journal and set at least two attainable goals per day. Encourage them to seek professional help.

Do Not Give Up On Them

The depressed friend is not asking you to be their therapist. They just need to know you care, are concerned and take this disease seriously. The lonely feelings are locked inside because they do not want to push anyone away. Being rejected drives a stake right through their heart and sets off a series of unhealthy thoughts that deepens their depression even more. Depression is a debilitating disease with ripple effects that are spread far and wide. If you know someone who is depressed check on them, even if its a simple text message, an email or e-card, but most of all help them feel they are not alone.

WIN OVER DEPRESSION
RECITE DAILY

Depression has no power in my life. I have nothing to prove to anyone. I am my own person capable of holding my own and I do not need validation from anyone to determine my self-worth. I will begin today making independent decisions based upon my needs. I will no longer place the needs of others before myself; I will stand up and fight for the convictions I am not willing to compromise. I know that my depression in part stems from other people who I have given to much power over my life. Every day I will begin to make decisions that will reflect my beliefs and value system. I want to heal and therefore I will take on difficult tasks and make better choices for the right reasons.

Suicidal thoughts can really seep into one’s mind at anytime especially if you are dealing with clinical depression, or other mental health disorders. I know that trying to understand why someone would take their own life is the million dollar question. There is so much guilt that surfaces when someone we know commits suicide.

Loved ones are pained tremendously and wonder whether they could have done anything to prevent such a final act. It is likely the individual suffered in silence for a period of time unbeknown to their family or friends. The stigma that surrounds mental health issues is real and so many mask their feelings to keep from feeling like a burden.

The truth is you will probably never know the exact reason and there was likely nothing you could have done. There may be warning signs but not necessarily.

These debilitating mental health diseases do not discriminate but take many innocent prisoners and often times out of the blue. Suicide is an act perceived to be, “Selfish.” The loved ones left behind must literally pick up the pieces and try to move on with their lives. Unfortunately, most individuals who have dealt with clinical depression have more than likely contemplated suicide.

The holidays can bring on a season of the blues. Many people feel sad around the holidays and it is really hard to be cheerful and upbeat. This episode of, 'Win Over Depression,' tackles how to get through the holiday season head on. There is a daily mantra that Tamera encourages mental health sufferers to recite every day to get them on the road to healing and being more proactive in their quest to overcome their circumstances and feel better.

Giving Up is NEVER an Option

Here are five things you can do right now?

1- Every single day complete at least two tasks you often put off; whether its writing a letter, calling an old friend, making your bed, making breakfast, getting out of bed, cleaning your bathroom, going for a walk, taking your dogs for a walk?

2- Get out of bed no later than 10 am; earlier if your can.

3- Get at least 15 minutes of sunlight everyday.

4- Listen to soothing music.

5- Open your curtains and window; smell the fresh air.

You are a winner and that is an undisputed fact.  Even though you may not feel like; take a look in the mirror and see what others see in you.  No matter your circumstances; you hang in there. There are better days ahead in store for you. It may not feel like it right now but you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hold on and keep the faith. You are much stronger than you think. Do not give up on yourself. This too shall pass and the latter part of your life will be greater.

It is imperative that we slow down before something costly happens to us. I do not want to scare you off. However, it was placed in my heart to share this episode with the masses. Someone needs to listen and act accordingly; share this message with a friend or loved one.

The individual who suffers from depression is constantly trying to overcome their circumstances to feel better and just survive.  They often mask their true feelings because they do not want pity or to be treated differently.  There are ways to figure out if someone is masking what is really going on; but you have to observe their behavior and responses.  It is essential that we keep in touch with our loved ones because suicide is at an all time high.  Much of the time there are no warnings or signals that someone may be in the depths if despair.
