Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest

Recap of Lesson 10: Ibn Qayyim says a person in whose heart the love of Allah has settled, then such a person’s chest becomes tight only when he sees the people who are idle, lazy and heedless in returning to Allah, those who do not relish in his Worship become an eye sore and mixing with them troubles him as though he has been struck by a fever. Ibn Qayyim says from the greatest causes of suffocation of the chest is to turn away from Allah and the heart being attached to someone/something other than him, and being heedless of his remembrance Permissible forms of love, e.g. loving one's spouse, child or loving someone for the sake of Allah However, it is possible that permissible love can go beyond bounds such that a person end's up loving something/something more at the expense of loving Allah, then it becomes impermissible. E.g. someone loving his business or someone at the expense of his duty to Allah. This is impermissible but not shirk. There is another degree of impermissible love where someone loves someone or something and shows lowliness/humility, then this becomes shirk (Associating partners with Allah). Why is shirk the greatest of crimes? Because Shirk decreases love of Allah, and love of Allah is the spirit of Eemaan (Belief) and without Eemaan the heart becomes dead A person who commits shirk has shared the love that was only belonging to Allah, he has divided it amongst others Ibn Qayyim says that love is of two types: One form is the love that is paradise on earth, delight and nourishment of the heart, life and cure of the soul, indeed this is loving Allah with all of one’s heart The second form is the torture of the soul, the sadness of the spirit, the imprisonment of the heart and the tightness of the chest. Indeed this is to love others besides Allah, with love that belongs only to him Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says that whoever has been given love for Allah with all his heart, then he is the one who is in a paradise in this world and will enter the Paradise of the Hereafter. Whoever dies upon that state then it is hoped that he is upon good. When a person loves Allah with all his heart, then the creation becomes like inanimate objects since he/she realises nothing can harm or benefit him in and of themselves. He/she realises that the command is ONLY in the hand of Allah and turns ONLY to Allah for whatever need. When a person loves someone/something other than Allah (in an impermissible way), then his heart becomes weary, bitter, and tight. NOTE: This is referring to impermissible love, whether or not shirk is present, see above. Ibn Qayyim says that Allah has created the sons of Adam and has given them a state of completion to each of their faculties and organs (e.g. the eye and sight), and that when such a part of him loses its completion, then the person feels uneasy about that. Ibn Qayyim says the king of all the organs is the heart and was created in order to recognise and remember its creator, to love and hate for its maker, and that when it loses its completion and perfection such a heart becomes agonised. So how do we cure the heart? Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami this is via the Prophetic medicine and that ordinary medical knowledge (anatomy, physiology etc) is not sufficient as medical doctors themselves are sometimes afflicted with diseases of the heart. The cure is to become preoccupied in the remembrance of Allah One can learn about and study his religion, the sayings and life of the Prophet (), what dua to make when you eat food or go to the mosque etc. Making dhikr (remembrance) often means you will not forget Allah

Saturday 31 Mar 2018 Authentic Adhkar from the Qur'an and Sunnah

Lesson 11: The names of Allah are Husnaa (Pinnacle of perfection), and what are the 4 forms of Ilhad (Distortion)?

The names of Allah are described as "husnaa", i.e. at the pinnacle of perfection We have been commanded in the quran to make mention of his names and a severe weartning has been made aha-inst those who make Ilhaad (distortion, deviation, rejection) and that indeed Allah will hold them to account with a severe reckoning Allah says: “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who believe or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be recompensed for what they used to do.” [Surah Al-Ar’raaf (The Heights) verse 180] Therefore it is important for EVERY muslim to make time to study the beautiful names of Allah and that he/she understands these names and attributes correctly Allah says: “Verily, those who turn away from Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc. by attacking, distorting and denying them), are not hidden from Us. Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do what you will. Verily! He is All-Seer of what you do (this is a severe threat to the disbelievers).” [Surah Fussilat (They are Explained in Detail) verse 40] All of the names of Allah are husnaa, Allah due to his perfection, might, majesty and greatness is not names except with the most perfect and beautiful of names. Likewise Allah does not have any attribute except that it is perfect The praise of Allah is only made upon the most perfect and best of praise Nothing can take the place or replace the names of Allah Allah mentions his names as being husnaa in four places in the Qur’an Al-A’raaf (The Heights) verse 180 Al-Israa (The Journey by Night) verse 110 Daa-Haa (Ta-Ha) verse 08 Al-Hashr (The Gathering) verse 24 Each of the names of Allah has an attribute of perfection associated with it Each of the attributes of Allah has an attribute of perfection associated with it similarly All of Allah’s names and attributes indicate absolute perfection, not a single one of them has any element of deficiency associated with it. Every name of Allah carries a distinct attribute of perfection and meaning which is unique from all the others, no two names of his are the same. What are some examples? Therefore, when one looks at the names and attributes of Allah, they all indicate Allah Ibn Qayyim said all the names of Allah are praise, had they been merely names with no meaning, then this would not have indicated any praise or perfection. Rather all the names carry attributes which are upon the pinnacle of perfection When one considers all the above, it becomes clear that learning the names and attributes of Allah is something one MUST learn and put into practice. For example, when Allah says “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them”, then this can only be actualised by understanding them in the first place so that one knows what he or she is saying when calling upon Allah with his names.

Lesson 10: The One who loves a thing/person besides Allah becomes imprisoned and tortured by it

Brief recap of previous lesson: Ibn Al-Qayyim says from among the means of bringing about relaxation of the Chest is Inaaba (turning to Allah in repentance) and to love Allah with all your heart; Different forms of Love, which is permissible and which is impermissible? Love for Allah expands the chest in spite of the difficulties one may face in life Look at the example of the life of Ibn Taymiyyah, see Lesson 5 Look at the statement of Shaikh Muqbil, see Lesson 9 Ibn Qayyim says a person in whose heart the love of Allah has settled, then such a person's chest becomes tight only when he sees the people who are idle, lazy and heedless in returning to Allah, those who do not relish in his Worship become an eye sore and mixing with them troubles him as though he has been struck by a fever. Everyone makes mistakes, the type of heedless people mentioned here are those who do not turn in repentance to Allah Why do such righteous people feel like this? because they realise it is not possible to guide everyone and so their heart becomes uneasy For that reason you will find that prison was a form of seclusion for the likes of Shaykh ul Islam Ibn-Taymiyyah Ibn Qayyim says from the greatest causes of suffocation of the chest is to turn away from Allah and the heart being attached to someone/something other than him, and being heedless of his remembrance Whoever loves something besides Allah in a manner only befitting Allah (or in an impermissible form), then his heart will be agonised by it, his heart will be imprisoned by it and as a result of this no one will be in a more bitter and ill-tempered state than him Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says Ibn Qayyim mentions a disease in order to describe the cure Turning away from Allah could lead to apostasy Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhaab mentions that among the nullifiers of a person’s Islam is him/her turning away from the religion (NOTE: there are different levels of turning away, not all of them lead to Apostasy) The proof for the above is the verse : “And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of his Lord, then he turns aside therefrom? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.).” [Surah Sajdah (The Prostration) verse 22] Turning away from the religion of Allah to the extent that someone does not raise his head to study it may form a basis for apostasy Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says the one who becomes infatuated with his Imam (e.g. sufi “pir”), to such an extent that this love carries humility and debasement, then this is Shirk (associating partners to Allah, Polytheism) as only Allah deserves to be loves in this way Shirk is the greatest sin of all in Islam This is because Shirk decreases and makes imperfect the love of Allah A person who does Shirk such as this, but claims to have eemaan, then this is merely superficial eemaan Ibn Qayyim says that the one who loves someone/something, at the expense of being obedient to Allah, and turns away from Allah, then he will be tortured by it, grief and sorrow will eat away at his/her soul. Why is this the case?

Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 9: To Love Allah with all the heart, different types of love, and a statement of Imam Muqbil • Recap of Lesson 8: o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami’s advise on how to prepapre for death o Balancing between love, fear and hope o The example of how physical light illuminates a room and expands the vision, likewise the light of Eemaan expands the chest. The opposite is also true o Ibn Al-Qayyim says from among the means of bringing about relaxation of the Chest is “Al-‘Ilm”;The Religious Knowledge. o Essential vs supererogatory knowledge • Ibn Al-Qayyim says from among the means of bringing about relaxation of the Chest is Inaaba (turning to Allah in repentence) and to love Allah with all your heart; o To love Allah such that your heart does not love anyone else alongside him o NOTE 1: Love is of two types. Loving for the sake of Allah and Loving someone alongside Allah. The latter is prohibited as it is Shirk (associating partnes with Allah) and this nullifies one’s Islam. o NOTE 2: Besides the above two types of Love, there is also the love that comes from the natural inclination someone has e.g. for his/her family, their wealth etc. However, this type of love is not considered Shirk as long as it is not submissiveness and humility o NOTE 3: Love for the sake of Allah is a righteous deed, and Loving the awlia (allies) of Allah is considered good, however we do not call the awlia of Allah those sufi leaders who claim to have “Kashf” (pretend to know the unseen), or those who instruct their followers to make dhikr a thousand times in one sitting, or those who believe they have control over the affairs of the world etc. We find that sufi followers love their Imams with submissiveness and humility o NOTE 4: It is better to love the one who is a faasiq from the people of sunnah than the worshipper from the people of innovation • Ibn Al-Qayyim says we love Allah with all the heart, the type of love of worship which carries humility and submissiveness, this should only be directed towards Allah o Therefore, we should find enjoyment in worshipping Allah o This will alleviate the chest

Sat 17 Mar 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 9: The Purpose of our Creation, and the falsehood of Atheism and Polytheism • Brief recap of previous lessons • Importance of having a connection to Allah • Ibn Qayyim’s statement that the need of the slave to remember his lord is just as the need of a fish for water • One who makes no remembrance of his lord, then his heart is an empty void • Allah gave us a purpose and an objective to our existence • Allah says: “And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)” (Surah Dhaariyaat (The Winds that Scatter) verse 56) o Allah, from the very beginning of the creation of our father Adam, this was the objective and Allah ordered all of the Angels to prostrate to Adam o Shaitaan (Satan), unlike the Angels, refused to prostrate and so he became from the disbelievers o NOTE: Unlike some Christians, we do NOT believe that Shaitaan (Satan) was an Angel or a “fallen angel”. He is a Jinn. • Shaitaan attempts to misguide the people and lead them to the hellfire • The falsehood of Atheism. o It is from our innate human nature that we believe and recognise that we have a creator. Even the atheist cannot escape the recognition that there is a being greater than themselves • The story of the Muslim scholar vs a group of Atheists (approx. 1300 years ago) o What did the Scholar say to them? o The clear error of Atheists that they recognise purpose and design in everyday life, yet reject purpose and design in life itself, or in the complexity of the world we live in. They will refuse to accept that a ship can come about without a ship maker, yet they insist to believe that the creation/everything in existence can come about without a creator. • Allah says: “Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving;” [Surah Al-Mulk (The Dominion) verse 67] o The test requires effort. Following the commands of the devil is easier than following the commands of our Lord. o Certainly, there will be a resurrection and the results of this test will become clear to see • Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Three follow the deceased, two of them return, and one remains. He is followed by his family, his wealth, and his deeds. So his family and his wealth returns, and his deeds remain." [Jami` at-Tirmidhi] • Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, reported that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said: "My slaves! I have forbidden injustice for Myself and I have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another. "My slaves! You err by night and day and I forgive wrong actions and do not care. Ask me for forgiveness and I will forgive you. "My slaves! All of you are hungry unless I have fed you, so ask Me to feed you, and I will feed you. All of you are naked unless I have clothed you, so ask Me to clothe you and I will clothe you. "My slaves! If all of you, the first of you and the last of you, the jinn among you and the men among you, were to be as godfearing as the most godfearing heart of any one of you, that would not add anything to My kingdom. If they were to be as corrupt as the most corrupt heart of any one of you, that would not decrease anything in My kingdom. If they were to join together in one place and then ask of Me, and I gave every man among them what he asked for that, that would not reduce My kingdom at all, except as the sea is decreased if a needle is dipped into it. "My slaves! It is only your actions which I have appointed for you. Whoever finds good should praise Allah. Whoever finds other than that should only blame himself.'" [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]

Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 8: Importance of having a Balance between Fear and Hope, Knowledge expands the chest • Recap of Lesson 7: o Signs of a person having the noor of Eemaan in their heart o What did Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami say about preparing for death o How the companions and Salaf would take their self into account • Ibn Al-Qayyim said that the believer has good opinions about his brothers and sisters (Husnudhan), but holds negative opinion regarding himself (Suu’udhan), this is so that he does not become complacent and content with his actions. • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami mentions to us the importance of having a balance between fear and hope o This is one of the ways of preparing for death o We have hope in the mercy of Allah and also fear his punishment o What will happen if one has just fear of Allah and no hope? o What about a person who has nothing but hope for Allah’s mercy and has no fear, “Allah will forgive me whatever I do” o What is the measuring stick for having fear of Allah, how does one know if his fear of Allah is lacking or extreme?  The criteria are the companions of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  At the time of death what did Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say on his deathbed?  What did ‘Amr bin Al-‘as (may Allah be pleased with him) say on his deathbed? • Ibn Al-Qayyim mentions the principal cause of expanding the chest, i.e. Tawhid o NOTE: when we mention “Noor (light)” we do not refer to what the Sufis talk about when they say “noor”, rather we are referring to the Noor (light) of Eemaan. o NOTE: Where did Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami deliver this talk? o The light of Eemaan illuminates and relaxes the heart just as how the physical light relaxes a person as it expands his vision whereas darkness creates unease o The stronger that the Noor of Eemaan is, the greater the relaxation and expansion of the heart • Ibn Al-Qayyim says from among the means of bringing about relaxation of the Chest is “Al-‘Ilm”, The Knowledge. o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami comments that when Ibn Qayyim says “Knowledge”, he uses the definitive article “Al-(The)”, therefore the meaning of this statement is Knowledge of the Religion is intended, not any knowledge. o Why is this the case? Why is this Knowledge special? o Just as knowledge brings about relaxation to the chest, Ignorance regarding this knowledge of the Religion brings about tightness’ of the chest. This is because one who is ignorant of the religion does not know about Allah, the rights of Allah, who the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is, the manners of how to deal with other Muslims and with the non-Muslims and how to live life. Therefore, he follows anyone and everyone and so becomes a “yes-man” to whomever calls to him and remains ignorant of the essential parts of his religion. This type of person who has no knowledge and seeks no knowledge, he may eventually take a right which belongs only to Allah and give it to other than Allah (Shirk). o NOTE: The knowledge being discussed here is the “Essential” and mandatory knowledge which a Muslim has no excuse to be ignorant of. We are not intending by this Arabic grammar, or detailed fiqh, but rather we are talking about knowledge which Every Muslim must know, knowledge of Allah, his Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), the pillars and their rulings, rulings regarding marriage and other things which may affect a person and the Aqeedah which is essential. For example, see “The Three fundamental principles” and “The Book of Tawhid” by Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhaab, these books are short and easy to memorise.

Sat 10 Mar 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 8: Respecting the Scholars, and the Virtue of remembering Allah with his names and Attributes • Recap of virtues of Seeking knowledge (Lesson 6): o It is a form of remembrance in itself o You are learning about Allah, your creator, about the pillars of Islam and the rulings of our religion o There is no doubt in preoccupying oneself with seeking knowledge, knowing what is halaal and haraam, studying the Qur’an and pondering over it and understanding the Seerah (biography) and Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم,) that type of knowledge is the best type. o The gatherings of knowledge are the best types of gatherings and superior to gatherings of standard remembrance o Explanation of Fardhu ‘Ain (obligation upon each Muslim) vs Fardh Kifaayah (obligation upon the Muslims as a collective) o The hadith of the virtue of the Scholar over the worshipper • Statements from the Scholars regarding the virtue of seeking knowledge: o Ath-Thawri (may Allah be pleased with him) said there is nothing better which that brings one closer to Allah than seeking knowledge, and Knowledge has not been sought at a better time than now (i.e. today, do not delay seeking Knowledge) o Maymoon Ibn Mahraan (may Allah be pleased with him) indeed the example of the Scholar in a country is like the example of a fresh spring of water o Al-Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah be pleased with him) said the Scholar is better than a Zaahid (i.e. someone who lives a humble life) in the worldly life, and the scholar is better than one who continues to strive to worship Allah. Why is this? o Imam Ash_Shaafi’i (may Allah be pleased with him) said seeking knowledge is superior to the superogatory (optional) prayers. Why is this? o Imam Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked “Which is more beloved to you, that I should pray the superogatory night prayer or that or that I should sit down seeking knowledge. Imam Ahmed replied that if one would sit down and write about the Religion then that is more beloved to him. Imam Ahmed also said that nothing can be equated to knowledge. • The Prophet (saws) said: “He is not from us who doesn’t have mercy for our young, and respects our old and knows the right of our scholar.”” [Saheeh Al-Jaami’-us-Sagheer (no. 5443)] o Therefore me must respect the Scholars o There are some people who do not respect the Scholars and instead speak about them in a mocking and belittling way o This ideology of disrespecting the Scholars and learned people, this started in the early people of innovation and desires. o The people who belittle the scholars are of two types:  Type 1: Those on a sufi methodology, they make these disrepectuful statement as their priority in everything is their innovated acts, claiming they do it out of love. For such Sufis, they cannot be content with knowledge of the Qur’an and Sunnah being spread to the people or their followers seeking knowledge, instead they would like their followers to be as though they are dead bodies (i.e. in complete obedience and blind following)  Type 2: These are of the ideological, “intellectual”, “modernist” and philosophical type of people. Again, they cannot be content with the religion of Islam to be practiced in the way Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم,) and his companions practiced it. Their objective is to draw people to their own way of thinking and in order to do this, they belittle the Scholars  Type 3: These are the khawaarij, renegades. Their objective is to take political power for themselves, and in order to do this they attempt to distance and separate people from the Scholars, this reduces knowledge of how Islam is to be practiced, then they attempt to convince the people of their own way which has no basis in reality.

Sunday 04 Mar 2018 ✏️ Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 7: What are the signs of having the Noor of Eemaan? Preparing for death before it arrives • Brief recap of previous Lesson (Lesson 6): o When the Noor (light) of Eemaan (Belief) departs from the heart, the heart becomes constrained o Some may be in an apparent outward appearance of luxury, but in reality, they live a life with a constrained heart:  Allah gives the world (comfortable lifestyle, luxury) even to the non-believers, therefore it is not something to be used as a yardstick or measurement of how content and expanded someone’s heart is. o When Noor enters the heart, the heart becomes expanded and alleviated o The Worldly life is a delusion o A Muslim should see the worldly life as a path towards the hereafter and his/her heart is not attached to it, therefore its luxuries do not tempt him/her nor do its difficulties worry him/her o Recap of Imam Nawaawi’s poem o Ibn Qayyim’s Example of the three brothers • What are the signs of a person having the Noor of Eemaan?, Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says: o Returning back to Allah in repentance o Keeping away from the abode of Delusion, i.e. withdrawing from the Worldly life o To Prepare for death before it arrives • How does a person prepare for death? Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says  By making Taubah (Repentance)  By Turning back to Allah  By going over and revising the pages of your deeds. Review your actions and take your soul into account. • By turning back to Allah and making Repentance for your sins, your soul will feel regret for that sin, as well as fear and apprehension as you do not know what your end will be and in what state you will depart this world • This fear and apprehension allows a person to prepare for death by examining their actions and making repentance • By preparing for death, the heart becomes relaxed. • The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to regularly ask for forgiveness, and he was the best of creation (صلى الله عليه وسلم) • Verse: “And I swear by the self-reproaching person (a believer).” [Surah Al-Qiyaamah (The Day of Resurrection) verse 2] o Allah takes an oath by the self-reproaching soul i.e. a soul which examines its actions and blames itself for sins o Shaikh Hassan Al-Basri said concerning this, that you will not find a believer except that he blames his soul and tasks it to account for its sin, however the sinner continues to move forward in his sin and does not contemplate or become worried about where her is headed. • How the Salaf reproaching themselves?

Sat 3 Mar 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 7: The balanced position of the people of Qur’an, The Superiority of the Qur’an and Knowledge • The balanced position of the people of the Qur’an o We have already learnt that the best type of Dhikr is the Qur’an itself o The people who memorise it have a great virtue • Verse: “Thus We have made you [true Muslims - real believers of Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a Wasat (just) (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) be a witness over you.” [Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) verse 143] o Allah made this Ummah to be balanced and just. • Verse: “Verily, this Quran guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allah and His Messenger, Muhammad SAW, etc.). who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise).” [Surah Al-Isra (The Journey By Night) verse 9] • Allah did not reveal this Qur’an to cause misery to the people, rather it is to give them joy, happiness and guidance. o Verse: “Ta-Ha. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.] We have not sent down the Quran unto you (O Muhammad SAW) to cause you distress, But only as a Reminder to those who fear (Allah). A revelation from Him (Allah) Who has created the earth and high heavens. The Most Beneficent (Allah) Istawa (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the soil. And if you (O Muhammad SAW) speak (the invocation) aloud, then verily, He knows the secret and that which is yet more hidden. Allah! La ilahla illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! To Him belong the Best Names.” [Surah Ta-ha verses 1 to 8] o This was revealed because the Mushrikuun (polytheists of Makkah used to say that the Qur’an was revealed upon Muhammad () in order to distress him. • Therefore, every carrier of the Qur’an, and all Muslims, must stay within the boundaries of the Qur’an and respect the Halal and Haraam mentioned in it. • Allah has described the virtues of the carriers of the Qur’an • The General superiority of the Qur’an over standard remembrance (i.e. outside of it). o Following the obligatory acts, the best thing a person can do is to be constantly upon the remembrance of Allah o Dhikr (remembrance) encompasses all aspects of worship and comes in many forms o What did the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say were the most beloved speech to Allah? o When reciting the Qur’an, this requires purification, whereas with other dhikr this is not the case, this again shows the superiority of the Qur’an

Sat 24 Feb 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 6: The Virtues of verse Ayatul-Kursi (2:255), Suratul Ikhlaas (The Purity) and other chapters • Brief Recap of previous lessons • This lesson will cover the virtue of Ayatul Kursi (the verse which mentions the footstool of Allah, 2:255), Chapter Al-Ikhlaas (The Purity) and other chapters o Previous lessons have mentioned that certain chapters of the Qur’an have specific virtues, e.g. we covered Chapter Al-Fatiha (The Opening) in lesson 5 • The greatest verse of the Quran is Ayatul kursi (Chapter Al-Baqarah (The Cow), verse 255) o Ubayy b. Ka'b said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: O Abu' al-Mundhir, do you know the verse from the Book of Allah which, according to you, is the greatest? I said: Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) know best. He again said: Abu'l-Mundhir, do you know the verse from the Book of Allah which, according to you, is the greatest? I said: Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal. Thereupon he struck me on my breast and said: May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu'l-Mundhir!” [Sahih Muslim] o What is the reason for the high status of Ayatul kursi? This is due to the meanings of tawhid (Islamic monotheism) and praise upon Allah that it carries. It mentions the attributes of Might and Majesty of Allah. o Ayatul kursi has 5 names of Allah and over 20 attributes of Allah and this is more than any one verse in the Qur’an o Shayk ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said there is not a single ayah of the qur’an which incorporates that which ayatul kursi incorporates o Due to this great virtue of this verse, a person who reads ayatul kursi at night, then Allah will place a guardian upon him/her until dawn and no shaitan (satan) will approach him/her:  Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. I caught him and said, "I will take you to Allah's Apostle!" Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), "(Please don't take me to Allah's Apostle and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.) When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn." (When the Prophet heard the story) he said (to me), "He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan." [Sahih Al-Bukhari] o Hadith of Abu umamah that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “whoever reads Ayahtul kursi at the end of each the obligatory prayers, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except that he dies” [Reported in Sunan an-Nasa'i] o Ibnul Qayyim mentioned that Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah would always recite Ayatul kursi at the end of each of the obligatory prayers • Chapter Al-Ikhlaas (The Purity) also has a great virtue; o The reward for reciting this chapter is equal to that of a third of the qur’an o How is this (i.e. Suratul Ikhlas being equivalent to a 1/3 of the Qur’an) the case?  There are generally 3 topics in the Qur’an, these are; tawhid (monotheism), rulings (e.g. halal, haram) stories of the Prophets or those of the past. Some of the scholars say since Suratul-Ikhlaas purely incorporates tawhid then this is why is has the reward for reciting a third of the Qur’an. o It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al Khudri that: A man heard another man reciting "Say: He is Allah, (the) One" and repeating it. When morning came he went to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and told him about that. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to one-third of the Quran." [Related by Sunan an-Nasa'i]

Sunday 18 Feb 2018 ✏️ Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 5: The Light of Eemaan Prevails over the difficulties of this World • Recap of Lesson 4: o The cause and means of Allah saving you from your own evil could be just one dua o Tawhid is the greatest cause for alleviating the tight chest o Shirk is the greatest cause for tightening the chest o The noor (light) of Eemaan (belief) o For Summary of Lesson 4 go to: http://alhudabolton.com/2018/02/04/lesson-4-remedying-heavy-tight-chest/ • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami (may Allah have mercy on him) says the light of Eemaan expands the chest and as a result of that, a person does not attach significance to this world and isn’t worried by the toils of it nor does he/she take delight in its luxuries o However, this must be correct Eemaan, free from shirk o Eemaan must be based on what the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) taught us • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami continues that perhaps there is a person who has Eemaan but is in a state of poverty or does not have much wealth, or perhaps he has enemies whom Allah has placed in a state of authority (as Allah has done in the case of many Prophets, Messengers and those who strive to bring about rectification in order to test them). Such people, Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says, they find within themselves love of Allah and being in a state of happiness • Shaykh Ibnul-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) says the believer has an expanded and alleviated chest in this world despite the difficulties he faces, and when his Eemaan becomes intensified, then he will have an more expanded chest when facing the difficulties of life more so than what expansion he would find in a state of ease. o When such a person departs this world (dies), his/her heart becomes even more expanded, just as one who leaves a state of confinement as, in reality, this world is a prison for the believer o When the believer dies, he/she will experience bliss in the life of Al-Barzakh. However, when Allah raises him on the day of resurrection he/she will experience such a degree of relaxation which cannot be compared to what came before it • Allah may cause the enemies of those who strive to bring about rectification (e.g. the Propehts) to overpower them as a trail o Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH may Allah have mercy on him), the teacher of Ibnul-Qayyim, was tested greatly however despite these difficulties Allah provided him with bliss, happiness and an expansive chest o Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (when imprisoned) said: “What can my enemies do to me? My garden is in my chest, wherever I go it goes with me, it does not leave me, my imprisonment is seclusion, my being killed is martyrdom, and my being driven out of my land is tourism” o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says can your enemies do any more than this (to imprison, to kill, or to expel)? o Ibn Qayyim reports regarding the imprisonment of Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in the fortress of Damascus that he said “If I was to spend this fortress worth of gold, it would not equate to the gratitude and thanks I wish to give for this blessing (of being imprisoned in this fortress)” • Regardless of what others may do, if a person has the light of Eemaan then his/her heart is protected from the difficulties of this world o Ibn Qayyim says that he had not seen anyone live a life happier than Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah despite the difficulties he endured. Whenever fear increased with them they would go to Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, seeing him and listening to him speak would replace the fear with relaxation, certainty and tranquillity • Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah: “Indeed in the world there is a paradise, whoever does not enter into this paradise, he will not enter into the paradise of the Hereafter” o The paradise of this world is the delight of obeying and worshipping Allah. • Eventually such a person who obeyed Allah will die and his/her soul will be in bliss

Sunday 4 Feb 2018 ✏️ Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 4: The Decree of Allah and free will of the slaves, the effects of Shirk, and the light of Eemaan • Recap of Lesson 3: o The believing slave of Allah has Love, Fear and Hope of Allah, what intensifies these things? o How many types of Guidance are there? What are these? o For Summary of Lesson 3 go to: www.Alhudabolton.com/2018/01/28/2147 • Guidance which a person receives from Allah (Guidance for Success and inspiration), what is an indication that a person has received this? o Sincerity o Following the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) • What are the signs that Allah has not bestowed success upon a person, and that Allah has misguided that person? o The person will find in his chest great difficulty when he wants to fulfil the commandments of Allah o He views the commandments of Allah as shackles from which he wants freedom o These are signs that Allah has forsaken the slave • Allah says: “Have We not opened your breast for you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))?” [Surah Ash- Sharh (94) verse 1] o What did Shaikh Uthaymeen mentioned about this verse and the meaning of an opened chest? (See Lesson 3), what did the Shaikh say about the two types of Allah’s Judgements o The soul’s desires go against the commandments of Allah (e.g pray, fast, not to do haraam) and prohibitions and so it is important to strive against one’s desires and therefore having Allah’s help in opening your chest is needed. • If a person finds it difficult do what Allah has commanded, he/she needs to run back to Allah • If Allah does not grant a person success in running back to him, then this is an indication that Allah has caused you to become lost and astray o The person who will be guided and the one who will not be guided, these are already written and decreed and is in the knowledge of Allah already. • The Decree of Allah and free will of the slaves: o The perfection of the world we live in and the other signs of Allah, the creator, show us that Allah has perfect knowledge of what happened, what is happening now, and what will happen. This comes from sound reasoning and a person will naturally know this (that this perfect and complex world could not have come about by chance) o Yet also, when one does a deed, it is not by force and so everyone has a free will and a choice between doing good and evil. A person will know this from his/her senses, i.e. that the choices they make are theirs. • The cause and means of Allah saving you from your own evil could be just one dua • Ibn Al-Qayyim says therefore guidance and Tawhid are the greatest means of alleviating the tight and heavy chest • Naturally, innately, you can know that you have a creator. This is tawhid rubuubiyya (Singling out Allah in his Lordship) in one’s reason and is the fitra of a person. o However, having this alone is not enough to cause the chest of a person to be expanded o One must also have tawhid al-uloohiyya (singling out Allah in his worship) in order for his chest to be expanded • The greatest Means of bringing about tightness of the chest is Shirk: o Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al- Jaami says the person who fears other besides Allah, calls others besides Allah, loves others besides Allah (in such a way only Allah should be loved) then his heart is distributed among the people. His heart is therefore in many places and is never in a state of peace and tranquillity. He is always in a state of uneasiness regardless of how calm or happy he may outwardly be. His love is fragmented, his fear is disseminated. o The sinner, but who is a person of tawhid (Islamic monotheism) and worships only one God- Allah, his heart is in a state of peace in comparison to the one who worships many gods or calls on the dead (e.g. Buddhists, Sufis, Shia etc).

Sat 3 Feb 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah:

Lesson 5: The variances in the Chapters of the Qur’an and the Great Virtue of Surah Al-Fatiha

• The chapters in the Qur’an have different levels of virtue • NOTE: it is important to emphasise that ALL the chapters of the Qur’an are equal in one aspect, that is that they are all the speech of Allah and his revelation o Therefore, all the chapters of Qur’an have a great status by default • The remembrance of Allah through the recitation of the Qur’an and pondering over the Qur’an has a great amount of reward • However, different chapters have certain virtues, o the speech of Allah has different topics and this determines what types of virtues are present, o For example, Suratul-Ikhlaas (The Sincerity) talks exclusively about the Tawhid of Allah (monotheism) o Another example is surah # • The speech of Allah can be of two types: o 1. Information regarding the creator (e.g. the names and attributes of Allah) or the creation (e.g. stories of prophets, heaven and hell, future events) o 2. Information regarding the rulings (halaal and haraam, commands) • The greatest of the topics in the Qur’an is where Allah tells us about himself o Therefore, those verses talking about Allah are going to be more virtues than the verses about the creation etc • Virtues of Surah Al-Fatiha: o Thwere is nothing in the Torah nor in the injeel (Bible) nor in the rest of the Qur’an that is equal to surah Al-Fatiha, see below hadith. o Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) went out to Ubayy bin Kab, and so the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said "O Ubayy!", and he (Ubayy) was praying, Ubayy turned and did not answer him. Ubayy made his prayer light then went to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) saying,Peace be unto you, O Messenger of Allah!' He said, "Peace be unto you. O Ubayy, what prevented you from answering me when I called you?" He said, O Messenger of Allah! I was praying.' He said, "Did you not read among what Allah has sent down to me,"﴿اسْتَجِيبُواْ لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ﴾"Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life" [8:24]. He said,Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I will not do it again.' the Prophet said, "Would you like me to teach you a Surah the likes of which nothing has been revealed in the Tawrah, the Injil, the Zabur (Psalms) or the Qur'an?" He said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' The Messenger of Allah said, said, (What do you read in the prayer.) Ubayy said,So I recited Umm Al-Qur'an to him.' He said, "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Allah has never revealed in the Tawrah, the Injil, the Zabur or the Qurqan a Surah like it. It is the seven repeated verses that I was given."[Reported by At-Tirmidhi, authenticated by Shaykh Al-Albaani] o This hadith highlights to us the great virtue of Surah fatihah, it has different names, the seven oft repeated verses (see verse 15:87) and also the The core of the Qur’an. Other names are “Ash-Shifa” (the curer). o Another virtue of Surah Al-Fatiha is that your prayer is invalid without it. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said whomsoever prays without reciting surah Al-Fatiha then his prayer will be incomplete. See below Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)

What things cause a servant to be forsaken by Allah? • Brief Recap of lesson 2, what things weaken or strengthen a person’s Tawhid? • Recap of why Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami mentions Tawhid alongside Eemaan • What is Muraaqabah? o It is to worship Allah being conscious of him watching you, as though one sees Allah and so finds closeness to Allah and his chest feels opened • When a person sins or commits a mistake, the heart of a believer has certain symptoms o Every Human commits mistakes and sins o When the person who has Muraaqabah commits sins, he feels alone o Such a person as above should run back to Allah when that occurs o Why does he/she run back to Allah? = So Allah can save him/her from the evil of the person’s own self and own desires • Where are the acts of worship manifested? o The heart (e.g. fear, love) o The tongue (e.g. reciting the qur’an) o The limbs (e.g. prayer, hajj, fasting etc) • The acts of worship of the heart (e.g. fear, love etc), do they have levels or are they absolute/discrete? o The actions of the heart can increase and decrease and have levels# o How can the acts of worship of the Heart be increased?  Ibn Qayyim says: Whenever Muraaqabah (Being conscious that Allah is watching you) increases, then this brings about shyness, shame, tranquillity, fear, hope and submission before Allah that is not attained by anything other than it (i.e. Muraaqabah)  Therefore increasing Muraaqabahn will increase the acts of worship of the heart • Allah Says: “And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam, and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky. Thus Allah puts the wrath on those who believe not.” [Surah An’aam (6):125] • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami mentions that there are two types of guidance: o Guidance of directing and making things clear for a someone  Does this type of guidance mean a person is a Muslim? = No. This is because this type of guidance can occur by Allah but can also occur by others e.g. prophets and messengers etc. o Guidance of Allah granting success and inspiration  This is when a person’s chest is opened to Islam as Allah mentioned in the verse above. This guidance can only occur by Allah and so if someone finds this in their heart, then this means Allah has guided him/her  This type of guidance must come after the first type  In this guidance the chest of a person is opened to sincerity in performing the worships and in accordance to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  NOTE: Some Muslims say, “Muslims in the world are in a dire state, lets unite as a large umbrella group and not concern ourselves with what we believe (e.g. Sunni, Sufi, Shia, etc), let’s just get together”. This is FALSE and goes AGAINST the Sunnah of our Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). • The opposite of the above is one whom Allah misguides and so his chest becomes tight as though he is ascending in the heavens, see above verse.

✏️ Remedying the Heavy and Tight Chest Lesson 2: Causes of weakness or strength in Eemaan, what happens to the heart when one sins?

• Brief Recap of lesson 1 • Without Tawhid the heart cannot experience true tranquillity • No amount of wealth will grant tranquillity • How is it possible for a heart to have relaxation without that heart recognising the lord which has created it? How can one have peace without knowing the purpose for which he/she is created? o Anecdote of one waking up on an aeroplane, not knowing where he/she is going or why he/she is on that plane to begin with, the first thing one would want to know is “why am I here?” even before wanting to know how • Tawhid increases and decrease and this is affected by knowledge and patience o Your chest will be expanded in proportion to how strong your tawhid is and vice versa • Ibn Qayyim mentioned in another book concerning which group of people have the most perfect of Tawhid o NOTE: Tawhid has a basis/foundation, what is this? o NOTE: after the foundation of tawhid, there is the perfection of Tawhid, brief recap (see Lesson 1) o NOTE: the importance of staying away from the major sins, not persistently committing minor sins and accompanying that with seeking forgiveness o Recap of who are the best of the people in perfection of Tawhid, (see Lesson 1) • Shaikh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami says the above (i.e. Tawhid and Eemaan increasing and decreasing) is something a person is aware of by himself from own experience • Ibn Qayyim states a person’s soul fluctuates between commanding with evil, self reproaching and commanding with good. These are symptoms of strength or weakness of Eemaan • Causes of a person’s Eemaan and Tawhid becoming weak: o Turning away from Allah subhaanahu wata’aalaa. o Allah will test you with situations where you have an option to obey or disobey Allah with your hand, eye, speech etc o NOTE: after disobeying Allah, the soul of a believer becomes regretful and tight • Causes of a person’s Eemaan and Tawhid becoming strong: o Obeying Allah o NOTE: this must be done in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Performing Bidah is not obeying Allah. • Note: in the above, when mentioning strength or weakness of Tawhid, Eemaan is also mentioned, why is this? Are the identical? o This is because the essence of Eemaan is magnifying and glorifying your Lord and having Love for your Lord o These qualities (i.e. magnifying and loving Allah), if they are present in the heart it will naturally produce Tawhid • Ibn Qayyim mentions the verse: “Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is non-Muslim)? So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah! They are in plain error!” [39:22] o This is a favour and a blessing from Allah o This type of person, whom Allah has opened his chest to Islam and being conscious of Allah, he/she worships Allah as though he sees him (although one cannot see Allah in this world) o The one in whose heart Allah places light, then Allah gives him/her the sense of being close to Allah o When this type of person experiences sinning and weakness of eemaan, then this person will experience symptoms in his/her heart of a sense of loneliness as he/she has sinned against the one who was close to him/her and who placed light in your heart. The One you escape back to in such a situation is Allah as he is the only one who can save you from the evil of your own sin and the one who can restore that light in your heart.

✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah:

Lesson 3: Gatherings of Knowledge, making plentiful remembrance and the dangers of Negligence

• Those who sit in the gatherings of remembrance will have safety and security on the day of Judgement • Wasting time with vain gatherings and negligence will only be a means of regret on the day of Judgement • Gatherings of the remembrance of Allah are gatherings were peace and tranquillity descend therein: o It was narrated that Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa'eed bore witness that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angelssurround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him." [Reported by Ibn Mājah] o NOTE: this is not the same as Sufi gatherings where they chant repeatedly and turn off the lights etc. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his Sahabah did NOT do any of these types of acts • Gatherings of knowledge are a great cause for the protection of the tongue (e.g. from backbiting and other evil speech) o Know that if a person does not use his tongue in the remembrance of Allah (goodness), then one is more likely to use it for evil • The Remembrance is from the most purifying of actions and from the best of actions with Allāh subhaanahu wata’aalaa o Narration of Abū Dardā: The Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Shall I not inform you of the best of your actions, and the purest of it with your Lord, and the one which will raise you in levels the most, and that which is better for you than spending in charity with gold and silver and better than meeting you enemy and striking their necks and they strike your necks?” they said “Yes, O messenger of Allāh! Inform us”, He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The remembrance of Allāh” [Reported by At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah and Al-Hākim and others] • Ibn Rajab mentioned that there are many texts which indicate the higher virtue of the remembrance of Allah over and above giving in charity and other actions o Narration about Abū Dardā o How Shaykh Ibn Baz would make dua whilst waiting o Narration of Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ud o Note: The above point about how the remembrance of Allah can be superior to some acts such as charity does NOT mean that charity or other acts of worship should be belittled or stopped, these are tremendous acts of worship. The point is to show how great remembering Allah is when one knows the value of acts of worship such as charity Section: Benefit of making the remembrance of Allah plentifully • Allah Says: “O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance.” [33:41] • Many people neglect the specified remembrances (e.g. the ones at specific times) o For example, what are the specific remembrances made after the prayer? o How many different types of duās do you know and practice? E.g. when going to sleep, waking up, eating, when wearing new clothes etc.

Sat 6 Jan 2018 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah:

Lesson 2: Safety from hypocrisy, curing the heart and The Great Reward of Gatherings of Knowledge

• Engaging in the remembrance of Allah is a sign that a person has safety from Hypocrisy o This is because the hypocrites do not remember Allah except a little, see Surah (chapter) An-Nisaa verse 143: “Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.” [4:143] o Allah mentions in Surah Munaafiquun (The Hypocrites): “O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.” [63.9] o The above verse is a warning from Allah to keep away from the hypocrites as they have left the remembrance of Allah o from the signs of hypocrisy is the lack of remembrance of Allah, and this could be upon a Muslims even! o Allah would not place hypocrisy upon a person who is constantly and sincerely remembering him.

• From the benefits of remembrance of Allah is that it is a cure for the diseases of the Heart o The remembrance of Allah is a cure, but the remembrance of the people is an illness o The remembrance of the Allah takes away the hardness or hardening of the heart o A person came to Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained about the hardness of his heart, and Hasan Al-Basri advised him to soften it with the remembrance of Allah

• When you remember Allah, then Allah is with you o The one doing the remembrance is close to the one whom he is remembering o This is a specific type of Allah being with you (his creation), it is Allah aiding you, guarding you and giving you success o Allah mentions in the Qur’an: “Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinun (good-doers, - see the footnote of V. 9:120).” [16:128] o And Allah says: “And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).” [8:46] o More verses mentioned

• Also from the virtues of remembering Allah is that it is a means for blessings to come to you and will divert evil o Allah says: “Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Verily! Allah likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allah [those who disobey Allah but obey Shaitan (Satan)].” [22:38] o The more one remembers Allah, the more one has a share of this protection, and likewise the one who is deficient in this regard then he will likewise be deficient in these blessings

• When you remember Allah, then this is a form of worship o Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) : “Some of the poor Emigrants came to Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and said to him, "The wealthy have obtained all high ranks and everlasting bliss." He asked, "How is that?" They replied: "They offer Salat as we do, and observe Saum (fasting) as we do, but they give in Sadaqah (charity) and we do not, and they emancipate slaves and we cannot." He (PBUH) said, "Shall I not teach you something whereby you will catch up with those who have preceded you and will get ahead of those who follow you, and no one will surpass you unless he does the same as you do?" They said, "Surely, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Say: Subhan Allah, and Allahu Akbar, and praise Him (by saying Al-hamdu lillah) thirty-three times at the end of every Salat." They returned to him and said: "Our brothers, the possessors of wealth, having heard what we are doing, have started doing the same." Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "This is Grace of Allah which He gives to whom He wishes."” [Reported by Al- Bukhari and Muslim].

Sat 30 Dec 2017 ✏️ Authentic Adhkār from the Qur’an & Sunnah: Lesson 1: Introduction to the Importance of Remembrance and its Virtues • Introduction to this course and what it will cover • What is the importance of Dhikr (remembrance) and its benefits: o All Muslims should know that the remembrance of Allāh is one of the greatest acts of worship one can do and is one of the most beneficial things to do o Remembrance will bring one closer to Allāh o Allāh commanded and encouraged for remembrance to be made. Allāh also has praised the ones who make remembrance and has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward. For example, see verses in Surah Ahzaab (ayah 41 and 35) and Aali-Imraan (ayah 191), note: these are only a few examples, the Qur’an mentions this topic plentifully o NOTE for the above point: why does Allāh mention remembrance so often in the Quran? = Because of servants great need for this. All of the creation needs Allāh and he needs none. • There are many ways of making remembrance, for example: o Reading the Qur’an and Sunnah o Attending circles of knowledge o Acts of worship o Reading supplications found in the Qur’an and Sunnah • Neglecting remembrance will be an evidence against a person in the hereafter. Any benefit (e.g. being busy with work and not remembering Allāh) gained whilst neglecting remembrance is small compared to the amount of reward lost • Hadith of Aisha (may Allāh be pleased with her) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “There is not an hour [a moment of time] that passes by the son of Adam wherein he does not remember Allāh except that he will be in grief over it on the day of Judgement” [reported by Al-Bayhaqi] • The effect making duā has on your life • The Sunnah is full of narrations which mention the importance and great benefits of remembrance: o Narration of Abū Dardā: The Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Shall I not inform you of the best of your actions, and the purest of it with your Lord, and the one which will raise you in levels the most, and that which is better for you than spending in charity with gold and silver and better than meeting you enemy and striking their necks and they strike your necks?” they said “Yes, O messenger of Allāh! Inform us”, He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The remembrance of Allāh” [Reported by At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah and Al-Hākim] o Hadith of Abū hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The Mufarriduun have gone ahead” they said “who are Mufarriduun, O Messenger of Allāh”, he said “Those who remember Allāh often of the men and women” [Reported by Muslim] o Hadith of Abū Mūsā Al- Ashari that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The example of the one who remembers his lord and the one who does not remember his lord is like the example of the living and dead” [Reported by Al-Bukhāri]

The Benefits of Salāh in Congregation Allāh

• The Congregational prayer is legislated to be performed in the obligatory prayers

• Some optional prayers e.g. the eclipse prayer, the Eid prayers and the Taraweeh prayers and also prayed in congregation

• Also, the night prayer (tahajjud) and the morning prayer (duha) may be prayed in congregation can be prayed in congregation, however this should not be the norm o For example, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in prayed the night prayer with Ibn Abbās and Hudhaifah Ibn Yamān amongst others (however this was not his habit)

• What are the benefits of the congregational prayer? o 1. It is a means of uniting the Muslims  Supplications made in the congregational prayers benefits everyone (e.g. those with shortcomings who attend benefit from making supplication alongside and with those who are righteous) present and there is great reward in it  Allah forgives those who are present in the congregational prayer o 2. Praying in congregation distances the shaitaan (devil)  When one is alone in prayer shaitān whispers to him and distracts him, and when one is in congregation this is greatly reduced  Likewise, the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said the wolf eats the lone sheep  NOTE: it is important to stand side by side and not to leave gaps as these gaps leave openings for the shaitān to enter o 3. Praying in congregation is educational for the one not aware  Many people make mistakes in their prayers and they don’t notice at all. Praying in congregation will highlight to such a person mistakes they may have e.g. one may notice this himself or be reminded by others o 4. Praying in congregation establishes a sense of community and connection  For example, the one who regularly prays in congregation, if he was to become absent people would ask about him. If such a person was ill or had difficulties the others from the congregation would come to help, and if such a person was absent due to negligence then people would approach him to advise him. o 5.

• Allāh has legislated certain times for the Muslims to congregate and among them is the congregational prayer.

• When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) arrived in Madinah he immediately started work on building the mosque so that the believers can come to the congregational prayers.

• Not attending the congregational prayer is a large deficiency for a Muslim as he loses out on the unity, and shaitān has more openings to attack him

• Other times of congregation: o The Friday prayer is likewise an important opportunity to unite in the week and pray with the other Muslims o The Eid prayers are major opportunities to unite in congregation twice a year and the gathering on the Eid days are larger than during the daily congregation (the five prayers) and the weekly congregation (Friday) o Likewise Hajj is a once in the year opportunity for Muslims from all over the world to gather

• The above shows that Islam is a religion of unity

• Hadith of Abdullāh Ibn Umar The reward of the congregational prayer is twenty seven times greater (than that of the prayer offered by a person alone) [Al-Bukhāri]. In the Narration of Abū Hurairah congregational prayer is better by 25 times. o Which is one more accurate (27 or 25 times?). Some scholars say there is no difference as the main point is that the congregational prayer is superior. Other scholars say originally the factor was 25 times more however by the mercy of Allāh this later became 27. Either way this hadith indicates to us the superiority of the congregational prayer over the solitary prayer

Saturday 9 Dec 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer

Lesson 47: Shedding tears, Supporting the Family of the deceased, making Duā for the deceased

Note: the hadiths from this lesson were taken from the Book Bulūghul Marām

• Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated, “I attended the burial of one of the daughters of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). He was sitting by the side of the grave and his eyes were shedding tears” [Related by Al-Bukhārī ] o Note: All of the children of the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (may Allāh be pleased with them all) died before him except Fatima (may Allāh be pleased with her). o The scholars have differed over which daughter it is in this hadith as there were several daughters (Ruqayya, Umm Kulthuum, and Zainab) who died before him. However, it is mentioned that it being Ruqayya mentioned here is unlikely as the messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was away at the battle of Badr. o This hadith also shows that shedding tears at the death of someone is NOT classed as being the same as wailing (see lesson 46). This hadith is mentioned here to show that shedding of tears is permissible and is part of the compassion one has for the deceased and one may not be able to control that emotion. o Likewise, when the son (Ibrahim) of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) died, The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Indeed the eyes shed tears and the heart is saddened but we do not say anything except that which pleases our Lord and Indeed we are saddened by your departure O Ibrahim” o Likewise, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also said Allāh does not punish one on account of grief in his heart or for his tears but rather for what he says with his tongue o Likewise, one of the grandchildren of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was dying and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) shed tears

• Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Do not bury your dead during the night unless you have to do so.” [Related by Ibn Mājah. Muslim reported a similar narration, Jābir said in his narration, “The Prophet disapproved that someone is buried at night, unless the funeral prayer has been offered for him”] o What is the ruling on burying at night? (e.g. Harām/forbidden vs makruuh/disliked). Shaykh Al-Fawzān says it is not impermissible to bury someone at night, Abu Bakr was buried at night and also Fatima (may Allāh be pleased with her) was buried by Ali (her husband, may Allāh be pleased with him) also at night. Therefore, these examples indicate that it is not harām/forbidden to bury at night, and the wording of the hadith itself indicates that it is not impermissible (as one cans till di it if necessary) but that burial during daytime is better. o If burying the deceased at night is going to cause problems with shortcoming such as difficulties with the washing, shrouding or the funeral prayer, then it is disliked doing this at night. o However, if there are no such shortcomings when burial at night then it is possible to do it (as it was done for some companions as mentioned) o There are also narrations that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also buried some companions at night

Saturday 2 Dec 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer

Lesson 46: Matters surrounding graves, The Life + trial of the grave and the issue of Wailing

Note: the hadiths from this lesson were taken from the Book Bulūghul Marām Lesson 46:

• Sa’d Ibn Abī Waqqās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said (during his death illness) “Make a lahd for me and cover it with un-burnt bricks, as you did with the grave of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم).” [Related by Muslim] o Who was Sa’d Ibn Abii Waqqaas? o What did this request mean? What is a Lahd?

• Al-Baihaqī translated on the authority of Jābir (may Allāh be pleased with him) a similar narration and added, “and his grave was raised one span from the ground.” [Ibn Hibbān graded it as Sahiih] o NOTE: the surface of the grave is raised one span above the ground so that its location can be known. o This hadith shows that the graves of the Muslims may be as the hadith mentions (i.e.one hand span). HOWEVER, going beyond this is not legislated nor permissible o This (i.e. raising the grave by a hand span) marks it as a grave and prevents people from walking over it or digging into/around it by accident. o Note: This is also how the grave of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was made. Allah made the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) the best of creation and choose for him the best, then how about the one who says elevating graves beyond this is better?!

• Jābir (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prohibited whitening a grave with plaster, to sit on it or to build over it (such as a dome). [Related by Muslim] o Whitening a grave with plaster: i.e. beautifying it. Modern day examples include using marble material etc. Beatifying a grave can lead to exaggeration in the matter of the grave as it becomes closer to a shrine and attracts people. o NOTE: Building upon a grave includes headstones (this is a very common modern day occurrence na’uudhubillaah). o It is also impermissible to sit on top of the grave area as this against the honour of the deceased. o Islam allows us to bury the person, raise the grave by a hand span, and use some rocks or stone to identify where the head is. This is how the early Muslims including the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) were buried.

• ‘Âmir Ibn Rabī’ah (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prayed over ‘Uthmān bin Madh’ūn, then went to the grave and sprinkled three handfuls of soil while he was standing. [Related by Ad-Dāraqutnī] o Who was ‘Uthmān bin Madh’ūn? o This hadith shows that this act is a sunnah act. o The handfuls should be full handfuls

• ‘Uthmān Ibn ‘Affān (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated, “Whenever the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) finished the burial of the dead, he would stand by the grave and say, “Seek forgiveness for your brother and pray for him to be steadfast, because he is now being questioned.” [Related by Abū Dāwūd. Al-Haakim graded it as Sahīh] o This hadith refers to the trial of the grave by the two Angles; Munkar and Nakīr o The deceased (in the life of the grave) hears the footsteps of the people who buried him/her walking away, the two angels come and the trial starts. o What is this trial? o What other things happen during the life of the grave (both good and bad)? o One should therefore not just walk off, but instead remain and make duā for the deceased. o Question: what if the other people do innovated acts as part of a burial, what should one do? o Issue: When making this duā at the grave should you raise your hands up? (=no specific hadith mentioning this)

Saturday 18 NOV 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Lesson 45: Making Dua for the Deceased, the Funeral Procession, and the reward of taking part in the funeral

• Recap of last lesson (44)

• Hadith of ‘Auf Ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) offered the funeral prayer, and I memorised this supplication (that he said for the deceased) “O Allāh! Forgive him and have mercy on him (or her). Grant him ease and respite. Make his resting place a noble one, and facilitate his entry. Wash him with the most pure and clean water, snow and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him in exchange a home better than his home (on earth) and a family better than his family. Grant him entrance to Paradise and protect him from the trails of the grave and the torture of Hell Fire”” [Related by Muslim] o This indicates there are 5 pillars to the funeral prayer  The takbīrāt (opening takbīr and 3 more, see Lesson 38 for how to do this)  recitation of the Fātihah,  sending salutation upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  Duā for the deceased  To give the salām o There are also some conditions of the funeral prayer (See Lesson 38 for more)  Intention  That the deceased and those praying over him/her are Muslim  Must be performed upon purification (as standard for normal prayer)  The conditions that apply to general prayers also apply here to the funeral prayer (e.g. facing the qibla, covering the private parts etc)  Issue? Can the Janāzah be performed during prohibited times e.g. after Asr but before maghrib?

• Hadith of Abū Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “If you offer the funeral prayer for a deceased person, supplicate Allāh sincerely for him” [Related by Abū Dāwūd]

• Hadith of Abū Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Hurry up when you carry the dead body (the Janāzah), for if the deceased is righteous, you would be taking it to something better, and if he or she is an evil person, then you will be getting him or her off your necks.” [Agreed upon] o There are only two possibilities for the deceased:  If he/she was good and righteous then burying them quickly will allow them to be amongst the blessings of the grave  If he/she was evil then burying them will remove the harm of having them among the people o Walking slowly in a procession (like in some cultures) is not permissible o The hadith may have two meanings, either to walk quickly with the body when burying them or to make the entire process quickly (e.g. all of it such as washing etc) o There may be necessary reasons for delay in burial such as identifying the body, to establish if the person has actually died/to confirm death, if the close relatives haven’t arrived then a small delay may be applied. Generally speaking the process should be quick and not delayed unnecessarily

Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer

Lesson 44 Announcing the Death of someone, Janȃzah for the Absent one, and some details of the Janȃzah

• Issue regarding making an announcement when someone dies: o There are 3 hadith we will discuss insha Allah regarding this issue:  The first is the hadith at the end of last lesson about the woman who used to sweep the Prophet’s mosque and who had died (see Lesson 43) o 2nd is the Narration from Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to prohibit the announcement of anyone’s death [Related by Ahmed and At-Tirmidhi who rendered it hasan] o 3rd is the Narration from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) informed the people about the death of An-Najȃshi (The Negus) the day he died. He took them out to the place of prayer, to offer funeral prayer for him. He arranged them in rows and made Takbir four times” [Agreed upon] o Overall: Making the announcement of the death of someone is of 3 types.  The first one is to inform and announce to the relatives of the deceased so that they may know and pray the funeral prayer upon them. This is permissible and mustahab (desirable). An example of this is the Prophet’s announcing the death of An-Najȃshi so the believers could pray the funeral prayer for him  The second type is when the announcement is made in a public platform, especially in a prideful way, e.g. to gather the people in large numbers and make it a source of pride for the family of the deceased (that lots of people came). This is impressible.  The third type is the way of the jȃhiliyyah (days of ignorance) when the family or close relatives of the deceased would wail and scream, thereby others would be informed of their death. This is not permissible  NOTE: when An-Najȃshi (this was the title of the King of Habasha, East Africa, his actual name as mentioned by the scholars was As-Hamar) died the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) made the announcement regarding his death. He was a Christian but a just man, when he heard the Qur’an from the immigrants from Makkah he became Muslim. He never met the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). When he passed away Jibreel (Gabriel) may Allah be pleased with him informed the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about this and the Muslims prayed the funeral prayer for him. This is one of the miracles of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), that he was made aware of the death of An-Najȃshi the same day he passed away, a distance that would take a great many days of travel for a messenger..  NOTE: in regards to praying the funeral prayer upon a deceased who is not present there are 4 opinions among the scholars. • 1. That praying the funeral prayer upon someone who is absent (body is not there), is permissible. The scholars who take this opinion say it is permissible as the • 2. That this is not permissible at all, scholars who take this position give the reason that many companions died away from the main group of Muslims and there isn’t a narration of them all having funeral prayers in absentia • 3. It is permissible only if the deceased is in a land where no one will pray the funeral prayer over him/her. Evidence for this would be the story of An-Najȃshi as he was in a Christian land and no one would pray over him. Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah takes this position. • 4. It is permissible to pray the funeral prayer in abstentia if the deceased is a person of stature/respect such as the scholars and Muslim rulers (e.g. An-Najȃshi) regardless if he had the funeral prayer in his area already. • NOTE: Shaikh Salih Al-fawzȃn says the strongest opinions are the 3rd and the 4th above.

Saturday 4 NOV 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Washing of Deceased by Spouse, The Narration of the Woman from Ghamid, Janaazah after burial

[Going through Hadith from Buluughul Maraam]

• Narration from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “If you die before me then I would do the washing of you” [Narrated by Ahmed, Ibn Majah and was authenticated by Ibn Hibbaan] • Hadith of Asmaa bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) that Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) stated in her will that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), her husband, should do the washing if she died. o Both above hadith show that a spouse can wash the body of the deceased partner (e.g. a husband can wash the body of his deceased wife and vice versa) o Except for the spouses, no man can wash the body of a deceased woman and neither can any woman wash the body of a man regardless of how close the relation is o NOTE: for a small child (a boy or girl under the age of 3-4 years) then either a men or women may wash them. However, some scholars say children should not be an exception. o A

• The hadith of Buraida (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated the story of the woman from the Ghamid tribe who committed fornication. [Paraphrased] She was a woman who repented to Allah and regretted the sin and sought forgiveness. However, she knew the punishment was stoning so she came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to ask for the penalty [NOTE: having a prescribed penalty applied in this world purifies the person, absolves the sin and removes punishment in the hereafter]. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not turn to look towards her or listen to her. Then she came another time and again the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not listen to her, then she came a third and fourth time and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was informed that she doesn’t have intellect, however when he asked her she was competent and said she was pregnant. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to her “Go until you give birth” so she went. Then when she had given birth (several months later) she came back and asked for the penalty. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to her “Go back and breast feed your child” then she went and breast fed him. She returned two years later, again asking for the penalty, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked for the child to be taken care of and made the decision to apply the penalty. She was stoned and died, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) himself prayed the funeral prayer upon her and she buried with the Muslims. It was said to him why did he pray the funeral prayer upon someone who committed a major sin, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Indeed she made a repentance, (such was the sincerity) that if that repentance was shared amongst the people of Madinah it would be enough for them”. [Recorded by Muslim and others]. (NOTE: this narration is similar to the story of Ma’iz bin Malik) o Point 1: If a Muslim dies due to an Islamic penalty then they are to be prayed upon o Point 2: A Muslims is still a Muslim despite committing a major sin o Such a person, where the penalty has been established, is to be prayed over, buried with the Muslim o Point 3: This is a refutation of the khawarij who declare Muslims to be disbelievers due to committing a major sin. Muslims are within the fold of Islam as long as they do not commit shirk (however committing a sin without repenting may earn a person a stay in hell for a certain while)

Saturday 28 Oct 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Hadith on Matters Regarding the Shrouding of the Deceased

• Hadith of shrouding of the deceased: o Hadith of Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was shrouded in 3 white cloths [Agreed upon].  This indicates the shrouding should be done with white cloths (preferably).  If white is not possible then other colours are also allowed.  It is mentioned that the cloths used were cotton from yemen  The 3 sheets are laid out and the deceased placed upon the cloths, there are no specific head wear (such as turban or hats) or shirt etc that should be used. Using only one sheet is permissible but it should be able to cover the whole body o Hadith of Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) that when Abdullaah Ibn Ubay Ibn Salool died (he was from the head of the hypocrites, NOTE: his son was a righteous Muslim) his son came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and said “Give me your garment so I can shroud him in it” so the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) gave him this garment and he was shrouded in it [Agreed Upon].  This is from the example of the good manners, gentleness and wisdom of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he accepted the request and gave his garment to the son of Abdullaah Ibn Ubay Ibn Salool despite his father’s actions  This hadith shows that shrouding can be done with tailored garments and the deceased can be made to wear it in the normal way (e.g. a thobe worn as a thobe normally is)

• Hadith Ibn Abbaas (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Wear your white clothes for they are the best of your garments and shroud your deceased in them” [Narrated by the 5] o In day-to-day matters, the colour white is best for the clothes of men and in death both men and women white cloth is preferred. However, in day-to-day matters for women, in public then colours which do not attract attention are preferred and in their own homes they have open choice

• Hadith Jaabir (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “When one of you shrouds his brother then let him perfect his shrouding” [Narrated Muslim] o This hadith indicates that the shrouding should be done properly. The first point is that the correct type of cloths/garments (e.g. to look for 3 white cloths of cotton material if possible) are selected and the second point is that the manner of shrouding should be correctly (see previous lesson 39)

Saturday 21 Oct 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Funeral Prayer Debt of the Deceased, One who dies in Hajj, Narrations of Washing and Shrouding of Salaf

• Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “the soul of a believer is hanging upon its debt until that debt is paid off on behalf of him” [Ahmed] o If someone dies and they have a debt, the debt should be paid o This can be done through the wealth they have left behind o If the deceased was poor and had no wealth left behind then his family should pay on his behalf o If the family has no wealth then his relatives, o if none of them can do it then any of the Muslims can pay his debt. This is because this hadith indicates that the soul of the deceased is held/stuck, cannot progress into paradise until this issue is settled o from amongst the things the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to place importance was this issue of the debt of the dead. He would ask about it and pay the debt of the deceased o The hadith indicates that a person will not get into paradise until the debts are paid o Debt is amongst the rights of the people and must be either paid back or the debtor has to waive it o NOTE: the above here is regarding a halal loan/debt. If the issue is concerning stolen money which isn’t repaid then this is more serious issue. The rights of the people are an important matter and their rights should be returned and should be done quickly

• Narration of Ibn Abbas about the Sahabah who died in Hajj. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two garments”, and in another narration “shroud him in his garments”, and to not put any fragrance upon him, and to not cover his head because he will be raised on the day of resurrection making the Talbiyah, [Bukhari and Muslim]. We learn from this hadith: o The obligation to wash the deceased and to used camphor, soap etc. Shampoo and other cleaning products are permissible but camphor is better as it was used by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) o To shroud the body is also an obligation. Shrouding is a priority and any money the deceased may have had should be used to ensure he has a shroud before inheritance or debt is considered o The burial is also an obligation and likewise the wealth of the deceased should be used to cover this before inheritance or debt is considered o Issue 1: should the special funeral cars be used (the long estate cars with large window)? Shaykh Al-Albaani states this is an imitation of the practices of the non-Muslims and Muslims should not do this. o Overall: The cost of the washing, shrouding and burial of the deceased should be covered as a priority before debt, will etc inheritance. o Question from one of the children: If someone dies in a country and no one prays the Janaazah what happens (Example of Artic explorer!). o Death does not cut off the state of Ihram# o Issue 2: if someone dies in hajj must his family finish his hajj for him as a substitute? o Issue 3: The dead muhrim should be kept away from what a living muhrim is kept from such as fragrances.

Chapter of Prayer: Lesson 40 Remembering Death, issue of Suicide, other matters Surrounding Death

This lesson will go into Extra details of the Janazaah prayer, using hadiths outside of this book • From the book Explanation of Buluughul Maraam

o Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “Remember the Destroyer of Desires often, death”  Death is inevitable and We should remember it often, when a person thinks about death you will not be fooled by the desires/glitters of this world. Therefore, a person should not become negligent of this.  Remembering death helps one to prepare for the after-life (Akhirah) as it encourages good deeds, and reduces sins  Remembering death weakens attachment to the world, removes the worry for the one who has little and removes the satisfaction for the one that has much

o Hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) “None of you should wish for death due to difficulty afflicting him. If you had to say wish for it then say O Allah let me to live as long as life is better for me and allow me die if death is better for me”  This indicates the impermissibility of suicide. A Muslim should not wish for death upon themselves due to difficulties they may face, let alone doing it  Secondly, we also learn from this hadith that in times of difficulty a Muslim should remain calm, patient and put their trust in Allah. Remember everything has already been decreed, so you keep your trust in Allah and keep making dua/supplication (being confident and certain in Allah) and this difficulty will be removed and/or you will get reward for your patience  Example of the Story of Ibrāhīm (Abraham) may Allah be pleased with him and other Prophets and Messengers (may Allah be pleased with them all)  Some scholars mention from this hadith that you should not wish for death

o Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “The hour shall not be established until a man will walk past the grave of another man and he will say ‘if only I was in his place’”  This narration is talking about the fitan (trials and tribulations) that will come when the hour is near

o Hadith of Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said “A believer dies with sweat upon his forehead”  This narration indicates that death is a difficult moment. Scholars say this could mean the actual time of death has hardship within it which wipes away sins.  When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was in his final illness, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned he had a cloth to wipe his head with due to the sweat, and he said indeed death has its pangs  However, when the soul exits, the soul of a believer exits easily from the body as water exits a water skin

o Hadith of Abu Sa’īd and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to remind those on the verge of death about the Shahādah  Majority of scholars say this is a recommendation instead of an obligation  It is possible to say the Shahādah in the presence of the one who is dying to remind them of it  What is the wisdom behind this?  Related matter: is it sunnah to recite Surah Yasin upon the dying? = NO. There is a hadith from Ibn Hibaan which instructs to do this. However, this hadith is NOT authentic for two reasons. It’s chain of narration has a mismatch within it. Secondly, there is a person in this chain called Abu Uthmān who is unknown/cannot be identified. Therefore, this hadith cannot be authenticated

Saturday 7 Oct 2017 [Full Summary at AlhudaBolton.com]

Chapter of Prayer: The Funeral Prayer (Part 3) • Washing the deceased is mentioned in Multiple narrations and is obligatory for those acquainted with the rulings and conditions and aware of the death. • The Prophet ((صلى الله عليه وسلم)) washed the deceased and was washed himself upon his death • A deceased man should be washed by a man, and likewise a deceased woman should be washed by another woman. (NOTE: there are two exceptions which will be mentioned below) • The person who does the washing should be trustworthy and knowledgeable in this regard as this is a special act with rulings to it • Priority of who has the right to wash:

o If a person specifies in his will that a person should carry out the washing, then this person has the foremost right provided that person is capable and knowledgeable in this regard. For example, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stated in his will to be washed by Asmaa Bint Umays, his wife (may Allah be pleased with her). This also shows that Husband can wash the body of his wife, and likewise a Wife can wash the body of her husband. Another example of specifying a person is that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) specified in his will that he should be washed by Muhammad Ibn Sîrîn (may Allah be pleased with him)

o After a person specified in will, then the father has the next most right to do the washing. o If it is not possible for the father to wash then it becomes the right of the Grandfather o if that is not possible then the next of kin/relatives. o If no family or next of kin can be found to do the washing, then someone outside of his family should do so. o The order above applies to women also, e.g. if a woman specifies a specific woman to do the washing then she will have priority, and after that it is the closest female relative etc

o NOTE: one who is acquainted with the rulings should be given priority over one that does not have the required knowledge and ability to carry out the washing

• In General, a deceased man is to be washed by a man and likewise for the women. An exception to this is the aforementioned where a Husband washes his wife or a wife washes her deceased husband. A further example of this is that Ali Ibn Abî Tâlib (may Allah be pleased with him) washed the body of his wife Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) • If a small child under the age of 7 dies, then that child can be washed by either a man or a woman. For example, Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) the baby son of the prophet was washed by women when he died. • If a child is 7 or older then that child should be washed by the correct gender (Males wash the males etc)

The Testimony of Faith The importance of Tawhid (Monotheism) in Islam Story of messengers Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام (Peace be upon him) and the idols Nuh (Noah) عليه السلام and his people Musa (Moses) عليه السلام and Fir’aun/Pharoah Isaa (Jesus) عليه السلام and his message The Angel Gibreel (Gabriel) and his role in bringing the message down The distinction between Islam and all other Religions is the Pure Monotheism of Islam The second part of the Testimony: Believing in Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) as the final messenger of Allah The other Pillars of Islam such as Prayer, Fasting, Zakah (charity) and Hajj (pilgrimage) The day of Judgement and the Accountability on that day What the Sunnah (words, actions etc. of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)) teaches us Q&A What about Muslims who believe in a prophet after Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)? What about ISIS and Alqaeda etc and other terrorist groups? What do Muslims believe about Jesus (Isaa عليه السلام) and the other Messengers? Was the message of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) only for the Arabian Peninsula? What About Muslims who call on Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)? What does Islam teach about the Dajjaal (Anti-Christ)?

Chapter of Prayer: The Funeral (Janaazah) Prayer

• Brief recap of specific prayers we have covered recently • Reminding the dying of the testimony of faith • We have been commanded in the Quran and Sunnah to visit the sick, the reward of doing such an act and the benefits to the ill person • Having hope in Allah, even in the final moments a person who is dying should have good and hopeful thoughts in Allah that he will forgive him and make him/her of those who enter him into paradise

• Mannerism of the Muslim when a person dies. o To close the eyes of the deceased if they are open (Narration regarding how the Angel of Death takes the soul) o To NOT delay the burial unnecessarily, bury them as soon as possible. Why is this? (the wisdom behind this is discussed, regarding purpose of Life as a test, the life of the grave (Barzakh), example of Fir’aun/Pharoah and how even if a person isn’t actually buried in a grave they still enter the life of Barzakh, and a reminder of the fire of Hell) o The body of the deceased is washed and shrouded. The men should wash a male deceased and the women wash the female who has died.

• How to perform the Funeral Prayer: o The funeral prayer is to be performed outside of the mosque o The deceased (washed and shrouded) is placed at the front o The Imam stands before that body, at the head if it is a man and at the middle if it is a woman o The opening (first) takbir o Read the Fatiha o Another takbir o Read salaah and salaam upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) o Third takbir o Now read a supplication for the deceased, ask Allah to forgive him/her , as Allah to enter him/her into paradise o Fourth takbir o Give the Salaam and end the prayer, • There are narrations that say the more people pray in the funeral prayer the better for the deceased • How is the burial carried out: o The grave should be set out so that the head faces the Qiblah o The hole itself should be dug so that a hole is a dug downward and then another hole dug to the side of the base of the first. Alternatively the grave could be dig so that one big hole is dug, and then o What is the reason of digging in such a way? o A coffin is not needed in Islamic way of burial • Once the deceased is buried, everyone should supplicate for them individually, not in congregation • What about consolations? It is permissible to console the family of the deceased HOWEVER what should NOT be done is that the family of the deceased is made to host a large amount of people, and to cook for them etc. this places a burden unnecessarily on that family who now must bear host to large number of guests.

Q&A: o How can Muslims bury the deceased without a coffin if living in the UK? o Is a funeral prayer due for a still born baby, e.g. miscarriage? o What if body is burned or damaged? Should we still wash? Next Week Insha Allah: The Funeral Prayer continued (going into details)

Chapter of Prayer: The Eclipse Prayer

• Brief recap of previous Lesson • The Eclipse prayer: why is it prayed? o The occurrence of an eclipse is a great sign from Allah o Verse regarding the sun and the moon [Chapter Yunus: 5] o Verse about how day and night as well as the sun and moon are all signs from Allah, and that we should worship him as he is the sole creator. “” [Chapter Fussilat: 37] • The eclipse prayer is highly recommended (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) • The eclipse occurred during the time of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), narration • Prior to Islam, it was believed the eclipses occur when someone important is born or dies, however the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) clarified to the people that this isn’t the case, but that the purpose instead is for it to be among the great signs of Allah o Hadith of the solar eclipse that occurred when the prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) son Ibrahim died (note: all the prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) children died before him except Fatima), and the people began to say the above and he instead told them that eclipses don’t occur for these reasons, and that they (eclipses) should be recognised as a great sign of Allah o An eclipse is a magnificent sign o Hadith of Abu Musaa (in Bukhari) that the sign of the eclipse should bring someone to remember Allah, invoking him and seek his forgiveness • Timing: o When do you start praying? [=when the eclipse starts] o When do you stop? [] o Can you still pray after the eclipse has gone? [=no] o Is there sin upon someone for missing it? [no] • How is it prayed? o Two rak’ah (units) o To read out loud o In the first rak’ah, begin with the Fatiha, then to recite a long chapter of the Quran o Then the rukuu’ (bowing) which should be made long o Then to raise one’s head and stand up straight (saying tasmii and tahmid) as usual o Then to recite the Fatiha and another chapter of the Quran again o The to bow (rukuu’) for a prolonged time o Then to raise one’s head and stand up straight (saying tasmii and tahmid) as usual o The to do sujuud (prostration), making it long. Then sit as usual (not making it long), and prostrate again for a prolonged time. o Then to stand up for second rak’ah and pray it as you prayed the first. o Then to end the prayer with tashahud and taslim, as usual • Should it be prayed together in congregation? [=better to do it in congregation but it is possible to pray by oneself] • After the prayer has finished and the eclipse has ended, the Imam should give a reminder to the people, for example about the significance of this sign, and not to be negligent or waste one’s life and instead to use it to worship our creator and make supplication to him [relevant hadith of Aisha radhiallaahu anhaa)

Saturday 26 Aug 2017 Chapter of Prayer: The Two Eid Prayers • Brief recap of last lesson • The Eid prayers something which is legislated in Islam [evidences from the Quran and Sunnah and consensus of the scholars • The Mushrikeen (polytheists) used to have celebrations at certain times, when Islam came it invalidated all of that and replaced them with the two Eids as a means of showing thankfulness to Allah. • The Eids are linked to great acts of worship (Fasting Ramadhaan and Hajj) • Narration about when the Prophet came to Madinah, the people used to have celebrations and he informed that that Allah has exchanged that for something better (Eid ul Adha and Eid ul Fitr) o Therefore, it is not permissible to make anymore Eids besides these two Eid, such as Birthday Celebrations, as these are imitations of the disbelievers o Likewise, things like Mother’s Day or any other celebration or commemoration are not permissible in Islam as these were innovations by non-Muslims and whoever imitates a people is considered among them. The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is that of the Sunnah of the Prophet (), and every innovation is misguidance and every misguidance is in the fire. • What does Eid mean? • What is the evidence of Eid in the Quran? [Surah Al Kawthar verse 2] • The prophet commanded the women to go out to the Eid prayer (being modest and not using perfumes). • Eid is one of the open signs of Islam among the people • The first time the Prophet () prayed Eid ul Fitr was in the second year of the Hijrah (migration) when fasting was prescribed and carried on until his death • Eid Prayer should be Prayed in the outside open space (not inside mosque). However, this open space should not be remote from the people. What is one of the wisdoms of this? o Exception is if in Makkah, the Eid prayer should be prayed in the Haram, and not outside • Times of the Eid prayer o When does the time for Eid prayer begin? [=when sun has risen a little above the horizon] o When does the time for the Eid prayer end? [=the time of the zawaal/zenith/meridian] o When is the best time for Eid Prayer? [for Eid ul Adha= as soon as sun has risen, for Eid ul Fitr= can wait a little after sunrise, what are the reasons for this?] • What if you only find out about Eid Prayer when it is after zawaal time on Eid Day, too late? [for example, if last day of Ramadhaan, if one community does not know the next day is Eid?] • Before going to Eid ul Fitr it is Sunnah to eat something sweet e.g. dates [hadith] • Before going to Eid ul Adha it is Sunnah to NOT eat anything beforehand [hadith] • Evidence from the Quran for paying the Zakat before Eid ul Fitr and doing the Slaughter after Eid ul Adha • Importance of going early to the Eid Prayer • The Muslim should wear the best of one’s clothes and the Men should use fragrance. The women should avoid using fragrance or wearing something that will attract the attention of the people, instead they should guard they modesty.

Saturday 12 Aug 2017 Chapter of Prayer: The Jumuah (Friday) Prayer (continued)

• Brief recap of last lesson

• It is permissible to speak before, after and in between the two parts of the Khutbah provided it is not about worldly matters

• The khutbah is very important as it has the mentioning of the Quran, hadith and reminder about Allah, it is not just a general talk but rather one that should be given importance

• When the khutbah is going on, if the Khateeb mentions punishments, is it permissible for people to say “a’udhubillaah” or make Dua loudly seeking protection and vice versa for paradise ?

• Talking during the Khutbah ruins the reward for such a person

• Jumuah is an independent obligation, not just a swap for Dhur o Jumuah is better and more emphasised than Dhur o There is a punishment for the one who abandons the Jumuah o Jumuah prayer is obligatory upon all muslim males who are able, free (not a servant), of the age of responsibility and resident (not a traveller)

• Jumuah prayer is not obligatory upon women, however if they do attend they will get the reward for it. o The same is for the other types of people (e.g. an ill person or traveller who still attends a Jumuah) o These exceptions on obligatory Jumuah (e.g. women, traveller, ill person) is to make it easy for them, if they wish they can attend and get the reward • It is makrooh (disliked) to start a Journey during Zawaal time (i.e. the zenith/meridian, when the sun is in middle of sky) just before Jumuah enters if one cannot pray on his way

• Conditions of the Jumuah prayer o 1. That the time of Jumuah must have entered, Jumuah time starts when the Zawaal (zenith/meridian) time finishes and the Jumuah time ends when the Asr time enters (Question: Is it permissible to pray the Jumuah prayer before the Zawaal time? [difference of opinion] o 2. Must be resident (Question: what about nomads/gypsies?) o 3. You must have caught at least one full rak’ah to be considered as having joined the Jumuah prayer (e.g. if you miss the first rak’ah, then catching the second and making up for first is sufficient for your Jumuah). If you catch less than one rak’ah then you missed the Jumuah prayer and must intend to pray dhur when joining the congregation o 4. Must have the Khutbah with the Jumuah (Question: Eid Khutbah) o 5. Certain parts of the Khutbah must be present such as praise upon Allah, Quran ayah, prayers and salutations upon the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) etc.

• A statement from Ibnul-Qayyim regarding the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Khutbah and how the people later introduced innovations into it • Some of the people who give Khutbah make their khutbah like an assignment (wordy, worthless) which degrades it • Some khateeb deliver khutbahs which are not suitable topics, issues which will not benefit the people (e.g. political issues) • A reminder and advice for those who give khutbahs (deliver sermons) to follow the path of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) • Advice from Ibnu Taymiyah regarding what is needed in the khutbah in order for it to have impact on the people

Chapter of Prayer: The Jumuah (Friday) Prayer • Why is the Friday Prayer called Jumuah prayer? What does Jumuah mean? • The day of Friday is the best day of the week o Hadith in Al-Bukhari and Muslim about superiority of Friday o “We (Muslims) are the last (to come) but (will be) the first on the Day of Resurrection though the former nations were the given the Scripture before us. This (Friday) was their day of celebration which was made compulsory for them but they differed about it. So Allah gave us the guidance for it (Friday) and all the other people follow us in this respect” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) • The gathering of the Muslims has been prescribed on Fridays in order for us to see the great blessings of Allah bestowed upon us and to encourage us to thank Allah • The ayah (verse) ”O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the Prayer on the day of Jumu’ah (Friday), then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew” (Al-Jumu’ah: verse 9) • Ibnul-Qayyim said: “It is of the guidance of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to honour this day (Friday), and to favour it with special acts of worship which he does not perform on other days” (see Zaadul-Ma’aad 1/11) • Which is better? Fridays or the day of Arafa? [difference of opinion] • On Friday Fajr Prayer Surah As-Sajdah (The Prostration) and Surah Al-Insan (Man) are read • Ibnul-Qayyim said: I heard Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah saying, “The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to recite these two Suras (As-Sajdah and Al-Insan) in the Fajr (dawn) Prayer on Friday as they deal with events that happened or will happen on Friday such as the creation of Adam, the Resurrection, and the gathering of servants (to the account in the hereafter). Thus, reciting these two Suras every Friday reminds the Muslim nation of the aforementioned events and consequently comes the prostration of recitation (in the Sura of As-Sajdah). So, the prostration of recitation is not intended particular here and the one performing prayer should not mistakenly recite a prostration-containing verse from whatever sura in the Quran (believing that it is an act of the Sunnah (Prophetic Tradition) for Fridays” (Zaadul-Ma’aad 1/120)

Saturday 29 July

Chapter of Prayer: Prayer of Riders • Recap of those who are excused from the normal performance of the prayer (e.g. the one who is ill or the traveller) • Another type of situation where there is leeway in the performance of the prayer is the case of the Rider o Reason 1 o It could be that if the rider were to get off his riding animal he would not be able to mount it again o Or he fears that if he gets of his riding animal that he will fall behind his company or be subject to some danger • Narration that the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) led the prayer whilst still on his riding animal • A rider must still face towards the Qiblah, due to the verse of Allah “” (2:144) • Whatever you can do of the prayer then a Muslim should try to fulfil that, what one is restricted from doing due to his/her situation … • In these days, examples of being a rider would include being on an o Situations where the rider does not have much control  Aeroplane  Boat  Train o Situations where one has more freedom  Car (e.g. to stop and pray if it is safe) • Question about rain: what qualifies as enough rain for combining in congregation? • Question about driving to masjid during rain: should one go to mosque during rain if he has a car?

Chapter of Prayer: The Fear Prayer • The prayer of Fear is ordained for: o When Muslims fear to be attacked whilst Praying as Allah states “… if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you...” (Surah An-Nisa: 101) o During permissible fighting (Jihad), Allah states “…those who disbelieve wish that you would weapons and your baggage so they could come down upon you in one [single] attack…” (Surah An-Nisa: 102) • Evidence for the Fear prayer is in the Quran and Sunnah • Imam Ahmed: “Five or Six ways of performing the fear prayer are authentically narrated about the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)” • Can be performed when one has fear, whether journeying or resident o If travelling, then the number of rakahs in the fear prayer is shortened e.g. 4 to 2 o If resident, then the number of rakahs cannot be shortened however the fear prayer itself can be prayed shortened • FIRST WAY: Hadith on the authority of Sahl Ibn Abu Hathmah Al-Ansari describing the fear prayer during the prophet’s time at the battle of Dhatur-Riqa o “One row lined up behind him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) while another row (lined up) facing the enemy. The prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) led the row that was with him in one rak’ah (unit of prayer), and he stayed in the standing posture while that row performed (another rak’ah) by themselves and went away, lining in the face of the enemy. The other group came and he (the Prophet) offered his remaining rak’ah with them, and then, remained sitting until they completed their prayer by themselves, and he then finished the prayer along with them” o Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim

Chapter of Prayer: Prayer of those having Legal Excuses

• Brief recap of last lesson on the prayer of the ill person • The Traveller can shorten some of the prayers • From among the ones with legal excuses or leeway regarding the prayer is the traveller • It is legislated to shorten a 4 Rakah prayer down to 2 • Reminder that originally the 4 rakah prayers (dhur, asr, isha) used to be 2 and afterwards were legislated to be 4 except for the traveller • The 2 Rakah prayer (fajr) and the 3 Rakah prayer (maghrib) cannot be shortened • What the Quran says about shortening prayer • The prophet when he used to travel he would always shorten the 4 Rakahs to 2 • Ibn Umar said “the traveller’s prayer is 2 Rakahs and that is complete...” • When are you allowed to shorten your prayer? (what defines you as a traveller?) o You must be travelling in order to shorten prayer, e.g. if traveling at 13:00 one cannot shorten if still resident at 12:00 o Do you have to leave the boundary of your city? o Opinions of scholars quantifying the distance o Taking into account the norms of the people • What about if one makes regular journeys (e.g. daily), do you combine and shorten? o E.g. regular commuter, taxi driver, courier or deliveryman etc.

• Combining prayers: o The traveller can combine Dhur and Asr at the time of either of them o The traveller can also combine Maghrib and Isha at the time of either of them o What if you pray maghrib and set off on journey and you can arrive at your destination before Isha has finished, can you combine/shorten?

• What if you travel to your destination or stop for a rest, and stay for a few days, during those days (whilst still not returned back home) can you still shorten and combine? o If less than 4 days in your destination (e.g. spending 3 days at location), you can shorten but it is preferable to not combine and to rather pray during the set times o However, if you find it difficult to perform each prayer at its due time then it is permissible to combine whilst at that place o What if you know you will spend 4 days or more at a destination during travel, can you still combine or shorten? o Various examples • Narration on how the Prophet would pray on journey During the battle of Tabuk

• what happens when you come across a mosque whilst travelling? o Join their congregation? How do you pray behind imam?

• Q&A o Question about praying in hotel around Masjid Al-Haraam o Question about Arafa and climbing mount Hira

Saturday 1 July 2017 Chapter of Prayer: Duties of the Imam The Imam has a great responsibility and this position has a great station in Islam. • It is permissible to seek to be imam Provided one is qualified • The Imam should take into account the situation of those who pray behind him and avoid making things difficult for them • When leading the prayer in congregation, the Imam should lighten it for the people [hadith] as some of those praying may be ill, or weak, or have needs to fullfil o This means making the prayer light whilst still perfecting its constituent parts (its rukoo’, sujood etc..) o The least perfection is to say subhaana rabiyal a’laa or subhaana rabiyal adheem 3 times o The Prophet used to prolong or lighten the prayer depending on the situation • The Imam should not shorten it so much that the people behind him can not do the Sunnah acts. • When praying individually he can make it as long as he wishes • It is Sunnah to recite the Qur’an in its proper manner. • He should prolong the first rak’ah so that it is longer than the second. In Summary, the Imam should look after those who pray behind him and give the imamate its due rights. Chapter of Prayer: The Prayer of those having Legal Excuses This chapter covers the sick, the traveller and the one in a state of fear. The sick: • The prayer can never be left • The ill person should try to stand to prayer – if they can not, they can sit o Sitting in the most comfortable/suitable position for him/her • If a person can not sit down, he may lie down o It is preferable to lie on the right side with his face towards the Qiblah o If one cannot lie down on his/her side, then one should lie on one’s back facing up, with body longitudinally towards Qiblah so that the feet and head face the Qiblah • If one is unable to move his/her body then they can move their eyes up and down for ruku etc • A person may begin the prayer standing and then feel that he can not continue and then sits down • Likewise a person may begin sitting down or lying down and then realise that he is able to stand or sit and may do so. • Issue #1: what if one is in hospital and cannot get out of the bed, should he deley prayer until he is discharged? • Issue #2: what if one has a problem with their back, and can stand up but cannot sit down? How should he pray? • Issue #3: what is one is capable of performing an action (e.g. rukuu or sujuud) but a trustworthy Muslim doctor advises him to pray lying down and to avoid that action (e.g. rukuu, sujuud etc), should the person follow the doctors advise even though he can perfrom the action in that moment? • QA: o What if The doctor in above example is non muslim? Or what if you are unsure if he is trustworthy ? o Who has the right to lead the prayer if the Imam is absent?

Chapter: Things which Break your Fast • Brief recap of previous Lesson • Removal of blood from the body o Large vs small amount o Medical reason, e.g. blood sample or tooth removal o Accidents • Does vomiting break your fast? o It will break your vomit if it is intentional o Accidental vomiting does not break the fast o Hadeeth regarding this • What about eye/nose/ear drops? Are they allowed during fasting? o Eye and ear drops do not break fasts as they do not have a direct inlet to the stomach, however best to avoid them o Nose drops will break fast as the nose is a direct passage to the stomach o Similarly, when making wudhu water should not be drawn too far into the nose or gargled for the same reason - Hadith • What about the siwak? o It is mustahab (liked) o What about flavoured siwaks? • What about fragrances that are gaseous (e.g. oud, sticks) o Does not necessarily break your fast o However, if fragrance is gas with heavy particles then that can be a problem

Things which don’t break the fast but reduce the reward: • “The easiest part of fasting is to stop eating and drinking” • The hardest part to stop is the bad action o Swearing o Back biting o Foolish behaviour o Etc. • The above things (bad speech, foolish behaviour) will reduce your reward for fasting o A person who sins often during fasting may lose all his/her reward for that day • The person who is fasting should try to ensure that he/she uses their time in the remembrance of Allah (doing Dhikr) and other good actions such as o Reading the Quran o Sitting in the mosque o Etc. • Hadith- “whomsoever does not leave the false speech, and acting upon it, and foolishness, then Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink”

Chapter: Making up the days of Ramadhaan o Permissible reasons for missing fasting o Illness (e.g. fasting causes worsening, or pain, or delayed recovery) o Old age, is not able to fast o What about too young an age? i.e. before the age of puberty and unable to fast o Travelling o Menstruation/Post-natal period o What about Pregnancy or breast feeding? Difference of opinion on this o Two types of illness o Short illness and eventual recovery insha Allah- must make up days lost o Long/permeant illness – cannot make up days, must feed a poor person for every day missed o Old age and not able to fast, o If he/she cannot make up days to fast, then feed a person for every day missed o Travelling o If you can fast, then there is a difference of opinion, some scholars say it is a choice, others say better to not fast because Allah has given you ease and you should take it o If unable to fast whilst travelling then you must not fast, and instead make up the days when you are no longer fasting o What about those who travel on purpose to miss fasting, what do the scholars say o What is classed as travel? o Menstruation/Post-natal bleeding, must miss those days and should make them up afterwards o Pregnancy/breastfeeding o Difference of opinion o What if the woman is concerned about her health or that of her baby? o Other cases of making up days for fasting: o Travel that ends midway through a day, fast or not fast? o What about a period that finishes midway through the day, should you continue fasting? o What about a person who ends up swallowing water unexpectedly? (e.g. someone falls into a river, and you decide to help them knowing you inevitably swallow water), continue fasting after?

Q and A: o What happens if in your country, it is still 28th days but you travel to a country who are in their 29th day and they spot the moon that day? o Making up day for fasting in case of complex travel (e.g. difference in time between countries)

Summary of Fiqh: Chapter on Fasting

• When the Fasting day begins o The verse “…and Eat and drink until…” [2:187] o Ibn Kathir mentioned that originally the time of breaking was from maghrib until Isha, this ayah abrogated that • It is Mustahab (liked) to have the Suhur before fajr o Hadith of Anas, “Have the Suhur, for indeed there is blessing in the suhur” o To have the suhur even if it is a glass of water o It is Sunnah to have the suhur late, it is a mistake for the people to stop eating long before fajr o What are the benefits of having the suhur?  Gives you energy for the day, especially having it late  Different from the Jews

• If a muslim wakes up in the morning before fajr time enters, and they are upon impurity requiring ghusl (bathing), and making ghusl will mean missing the suhur, what does he/she do? o The ruling is to have the suhur first o This is because suhur must be had before fajr, but this ghusl can be made after fajr without preventing fast • When to make intention for fasting o Every day before fast starts? o At the start of month only? o How it should be made (e.g. within one’s mind? Or saying it out loud)

• It is Sunnah to open your fast (iftaar) as soon as the sun has set and not to delay it o Delaying it is incorrect o Hadith of Sahl Ibn Sa’d “The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten the iftaar” o Other hadith to stress this point, that iftaar should not be delayed • What should the fast be opened with at iftaar? o Moist Dates and water [Hadith of Anas] o Not to have a big meal before praying maghrib first o Benefits of breaking Fast with dates and water • It is Sunnah to invite people for iftaar o There is a reward for opening the fast for another person • Question: “is it allowed to break your fast with dates and fruits” • Question about medications, e.g. Iftaar and having tablets that must be taken on an empty stomach before any food • Question about the iftaar in the Masjid Al-Haraam

CHAPTER: What things break your Fast

• Fasting has certain things which will break it, and every muslim needs to be aware • Fasting can be broken by two routes, taking something out from the body or taking something into it • What things break your fast? o Intercourse is Prohibited during fasting, and the person must make it up, and will also need to give an expiation (Freeing a slave or to fast two consecutive months or Feeding 60 poor people). o Release of Seminal fluid (with desire) breaks your fast. Any day broken needs to be made up for, however no expiation is required. Wet dreams are not considered to break your fast o Eating and drinking on Purpose breaks the fast and incurs a sin. The day needs to be made up for. If one forgets however, the fast is still valid and does not need to be made up. If it was due to forgetfulness, then the person MUST stop eating/drinking the moment they remember they are fasting. o Water entering through the nose breaks the fast, e.g. when making wudhu. Therefore, when fasting we should NOT gargle or sniff the water too forcefully. However, if it is genuinely unintentional, then it does not break the fast. Questions from attendees regarding the gargling of water, swallowing saliva and using toothpaste/mouthwash. o Taking injections that have nutritional value (provides energy) will break the fast o Having blood sample taken e.g. blood sample taken by doctors, breaks your fast. This will fatigue the body and make it harder to fast. However, if the sample is very small volume, then some scholars say it does not break the fast. • Q & A: o Question from attendees about using asthma inhalers whilst fasting o What if someone has a Nosebleed whilst fasting o What about pregnancy, is it compulsory to fast? o What about breast feeding and fasting? NEXT WEEK insha Allah: we will continue with the topic of what breaks the fast

Chapter: Fasting

Fasting is one of the 5 pillars of Islam, it is obligatory for every Muslim according to: • The Qur’an • The Sunnah • Ijmaa’ (consensus) • Known from the religion to be a necessity “O You who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you, just as it has been prescribed upon those before you” [2: 183] • The wisdom behind fasting in Ramadan is that it purifies one from immorality and vice because it blocks the shaytaan as the shaytaan circulates round the body just like the blood does. When one eats and drinks he is more likely to succumb to desire. • Timings of the fast: - From Dusk (when the whiteness appears across the horizon) - To sunset

• There are 3 ways in which you can find out when Ramadhaan begins 1. Sighting of the Moon yourself 2. Someone else informs you they sighted the moon 3. The completion of Sha’baan (up to 30 days)

• It is not permissible to judge the start of Ramadhaan based on calculations • What is the ruling on the one who fasts on the day of doubt (yawm ash-shakk) just in case? • Can we use astronomical calculations to judge the start of Ramadan? • For whom is it obligatory to fast? - A Muslim - Adult (reached puberty) - Healthy (able to fast) • If someone becomes Muslim during Ramadan – when should he start to fast? • Who is exempt from fasting? Do they have to make up those days? • What is the ruling on the one who is traveling? Should he fast? What if he finds it easy to do?

Chapter: The types of People who cannot be the Imam

• The role of the Imam is a great responsibility • There are Certain types of qualities that an Imam should have o See Lesson 29 which deals with these qualities • There are certain characteristics an Imam must be free from

o 1. A Fasiq cannot be an Imam  A fasiq is one who has gone outside of being an upright Muslim  Has committed major sins, but not shirk  Fisq is of two types • Fisq of actions (open type), e.g. fornication • Fisq of belief, e.g. incorrect beliefs, such as rafidah or Jahmiyya o The hadith of the prophet () that a Faajir (a sinner/wrongdoer) cannot be the Imam o Prayer behind such a person is prohibited o The people of authority should ensure they don’t put forward a fasiq/faajir (open sinner)

o 2. Someone who is unable to perform the acts of prayer o It is not permissible for somebody who is unable of properly performing the acts of the prayer such as the Rukuu’ (bowing), sujuud (prostration)  However, if all the attendees of the prayer are in a similar situation then the above does not apply and he can lead o It is not permissible for somebody who is physically unable of performing the standing of the prayer, **unless he is usually able but due to a temporary injury must sit down  Evidence for temporary injury: The hadith of Aisha () that the prophet lead the prayer while sitting  What happens if the Imam is sitting down, is the prayer accepted from those who decide to stand up? [Yes, it is valid but should not be done, should follow the Imam as the Prophet said]  The Imam can delegate someone else to lead if he feels praying sitting down will cause an issue (e.g. due to an uneducated people)

o 3. Someone who is incontinent of urine or stool (cannot stop urine or stool passing)  However, if all the attendees of the prayer are in a similar situation then the above does not apply and he can lead  In a normal situation, without incontinence, What is the Imam supposed to do if he is leading the prayer and his wudhu breaks? [he has to stop, put someone else in as the Imam and leave. The others praying behind him do NOT break their salaah, one of them behind him steps forward and continues from where he left of]  The issue above shows the importance of having knowledgeable people immediately behind the imam who know what to do  However, children with wudhu should not be thrown out of the first row, if they are eager and keen to come early and join first row the this should not be discouraged  Children who do not have wudhu should not be allowed in the rows as that is a break

Chapter: Women’s attendance in Mosques

The verse: “Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life, and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do. (An-Nahl 16:97) • Islam confers honour and respect upon the women • They are permitted to attend the mosque • If the women seek permission to attend the mosque it is detested to prevent them, even if is at night. • What is ruling on wearing perfume when going to the mosque? o What about wearing beautiful clothing? • What is the ruling on mixing with the men? • Issues to consider for women when going out of the house o Dignity and shyness o Appropriate Clothing o Not using Perfume o Issue of mixing with men • Is it better to pray in the mosque or to pray at home? • When is the Husband allowed to refuse his wife going out?

Chapter: The Rulings on the Imam

“The reward of him (the imam) is like that of those who perform the prayer behind him” “Three persons will be on the hillock of Musk on the Day of Resurrection: the person who leads the people in prayer and they are pleased with him…” • Being an Imam is a great responsibility. • The prophet, peace be upon him, was the imam during this time. o Who became imam after his death? • There are narrations about the virtues of the imam • Who has the greatest right to being imam? o The one with the best Tajweed o He should have knowledge of the Fiqh of the prayer o If the two imams have equal memorisation of the Qur’an – who should lead? o In the case, where they are of similar knowledge – who should then lead? o What is the evidence for this order? • What are the different types of “lahn” mispronunciation? o Which ones prevent you from leading? •

Q&A: • Evidence for the married being preferred as Imam over the unmarried • Does the bearded one have preference/right to lead over the clean shaven one? • What if there is already an appointed Imam? • Can you pray behind an Imam who you are unsure about (e.g. innovation, clothes below ankles)? • What about the people being pleased with the Imam? • Purpose of seeking knowledge

Saturday 18 March 2017 Chapter: The Latecomer to the Congregational Prayer

• You can only be considered to have caught the congregational Prayer if you have caught at least one Raka’ah (e.g. the last) o What happens if you catch less than the last raka’ah

• Whoever catches the Rukuu’ (bowing), catches the raka’ah o Hadith of Abu Bakrah  Evidence that catching the rukuu’ catches the raka’ah  Importance of not running to the mosque

• What happens if you arrive and you fear you may not catch the rukuu’, o You can make just one takbiiratul Ihram and immediately join rukuu’ o If you have time, you can make one takbir to join the prayer (takbiiratul Ihram) and then Make another to join the rukuu’

• If the Imam is concluding the prayer with tasleem, but you missed some raka’ah, at what point do you get up? o When he says the first salaam? o Or when he says the second (completely finishes)?

• When you join the prayer, that raka’ah is considered as your first o What about the number of tashahuds? (e.g. 3) • What to do when you join late onto a loud prayer (e.g. maghrib)? o Do you recite fatiha if you missed hearing it?  Difference of opinion among the scholars o What about joining late onto the quiet prayers?

• The IMPORTANCE in congregational prayers that the one behind the imam follows the Imam and does not go ahead of him o The hadith warning those who go ahead of the Imam o Four possible scenarios regarding following the Imam:  To go ahead of the Imam [Incorrect]  To go equal with the Imam [Incorrect]  To follow the Imam [Correct]  To lag behind the Imam and being too slow [Incorrect] o Hadith of Umar when he saw a man going ahead of the Imam o Many people are heedless and lax about this issue and it threatens their prayer o The statement of Ibn Taymiyah regarding the one who goes ahead of the Imam o Going ahead of the Imam is Haraam (agreement of all scholars)

• Q&A o When you join the prayer late, do you read the opening dua? o If you come late and miss a raka’ah for a loud prayer, should you read out loud by yourself when you get up to make up your lost raka’ah? o Praying the Janaza (funeral) prayer without the body of the deceased o What about if you miss the Janaza prayer for someone, can you make up for it? o Lining up the Rows via the ankles o What Gap should there be when a person stands to pray? Wide stance vs narrow?  What about the statement of some people that there should be 4 finger gap between the feet? o Bad smells such as Smoking and Garlic, can a person attend the prayer?

Saturday 11 March 2017 Chapter: The Congregational Prayer (Continued) • Recap of Last Lesson on the importance of the Congregational Prayer

• Reasons for which a person may MISS the congregational Prayer o With a reason  E.g. Illness  E.g. Fear  If a person misses the congregational prayer but it is his habit that he attends it but he had a genuine excuse, then he will receive the same reward o Without a reason  Due to Laziness  Majority of scholars say such a person’s prayer is still valid  But he/she will lose a great deal of reward  Example of the hadith about the blind man

• Where should the congregational prayer be done? o Statement of Ibnul Qayyim o Males should pray in the mosque o Situations where it is not possible to pray in the mosque  E.g. praying at the workplace

• How many people do you need to form a congregation? o Minimum of two people (e.g. opinion of Shaykh Al Fawzaan) o The meaning of the word Jama’ah o Hadith regarding the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) calling two people praying a Jama’ah o Minimum of three people (e.g. opinion Imam Abu Hanifah) and the evidence supporting this ruling o Other opinions

• Best place for women to pray o Home vs mosque • Best place for men to pray • Can sisters pray at home and form a congregation? • Can Muslim women be Imam at the mosque? • Examples of Bidah e.g. strange circumstance of some muslims deciding to pray the Jumuah (Friday Prayer) on Saturday

• Which Masjid is better for you to pray? o Far from your house or near to you? o Choosing between a masjid of Sunnah and a masjid of biddah

• In a mosque where there is a Fixed Imam, then It is not permissible for anyone else to lead the prayer without his permission o What to do if he is late • The same (above) applies in the home, i.e. the owner of the home has the right to lead the prayer unless they give permission

• What to do if you have already prayed (e.g. combined maghrib and Isha due to traveling) and you come into the masjid and the people are praying in congregation? o Do you join them or sit at the back?

• Once the Iqamah is started it is impermissible for you to start any other prayer o What if you already were praying and the iqamah is given? Do you break your prayer and join the iqamah? o The scholars (e.g. Ibn Utheymeen) say if you have a lot left of your prayer and the iqamah is given then stop it and join the congregation, however if you are close to finishing it then finish it off

• QA o Distance between the Imam and the people praying behind him o Is it allowed for you to leave the mosque if you hear the adhan? What about a sister who hears the adhan? What about other exceptions? o If two people are praying, should they be in Line or should the Imam be ahead? o Is an unmarried sister allowed to travel to a different country without a mahram but she has sons? o Question about marriage
