Tape Swap Radio returned to the Ice House in Bethlehem on Saturday, April 19 for the 2025 Lehigh Valley Punk Rock Flea Market. This was our fifth LVPRFM overall, and it was certainly our biggest. We broke our previous attendance record for LVPRFMs, with over 1,000 people stopping by the Ice House throughout the day. Thank you to everyone who attended who made this a rad event!

We also want to give a big thanks to our vendors. Huge amounts of creativity, artistry, and unique creations were on display, and we couldn’t be more blown away by the community. This year, over 50 vendors participated, which was also a new record for our LVPRFMs — helped in part by the new, expanded outside area.

Check out some photos taken during the vendor sales below courtesy of Derick Fiedler aka @tumbleweed_photographer.

After vendor sales ended, Tape Swap partnered with IceHouse Punk & DIY for a free, four-band punk show: World Breaker (Lehigh Valley hardcore), Pucker Up! (Scranton punk), My Messy Hands (Slatington punk), and Sin Bin (Lehigh Valley hardcore). Check out some photos from Ryan Susko from IceHouse Punk & DIY.

Also at the LVPRFM, we held a supply drive for Valley Youth House’s The Synergy Project Street Outreach Program, which offers assistance to runaway, homeless, nomadic, and street youth — including individuals on or around the outskirts of Sand Island in Bethlehem.

Valley Youth House’s Sarah Pammer has her car filled with items donated for homeless youth at the Lehigh Valley Punk Rock Flea Market.

The community certainly showed up, packing a car full of good-quality supplies. Donated items included: socks, bug spray, sunblock, flashlights with batteries, shelf-stable food, headphones/earbuds, Dove body wash, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes, deodorant, period products, and makeup.

Tape Swap Radio’s next Lehigh Valley Punk Rock Flea Market is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the Ice House. Keep an eye on our website and social media pages for updates on that event.

Allentown, PA-based psych-punk band Pale Fang joined us on the roof of Bethlehem’s Flatiron Building in October, 2024 for our first nighttime Rooftop Session. The city’s skyline at night was a fitting backdrop for the band whose sound is certainly dark itself. Wailing guitars cut through driving garage-punk rhythms as singer D.D. Moon weaved tales of criminals, searching for lost promises of paradise, and personal let-downs. In addition to Moon on vocals and guitar, the band is made up of former Tape Swap Radio guests Chad Huntington on guitar (Poor Luther’s Bones), Lee Romich on drums (Fake Cult, L.A. Fastlife), and Josh Maskornick (VoirVoir, Broski), who sometimes plays a second drum kit in Pale Fang — although he only assisted with engineering on this session. New to the Tape Swap series is Nick Pokrivchak on bass, who has previously played in Valley bands like The Great White Caps and the short-lived Dinosorcerer. Nick also put together this great mixtape for us back for our very first show in 2013 under his White Caps alter ego Sylvester Seaweed.

Pale Fang performed four songs, with two of them coming from their new EP Lose It, which was just released earlier in October. “Nothing There for Me” and “Lose It” feature the same relentless, dark, and twisted sound you’ve come to expect from the group, and they find the band refining their sound to laser-quality precision. Meanwhile, the other two songs in the session, “Paradise” and “Criminal”, are among the band’s stand-out tracks in their catalogue.

We welcomed Bethlehem, PA-based indie rock band Food Truck onto the roof of the city’s Flatiron Building in August, 2024. With their influences planted firmly in the ‘90s alternative rock era, the trio delve into earnest songwriting about friendship, love loss, and the tribulations of navigating your 20s — all with guitar, bass, and drums leaving a satisfying ringing in your ears. Food Truck’s second and newest album, Pure Gold, was just released a week before the recording of this session, and four out of the five songs they performed are from this latest release. As we found out, the open space of the Flatiron Building roof provided an ideal setting for the band to showcase their sharpened songwriting and performance skills.

Tape Swap Radio returned to the Ice House in Bethlehem on Sunday for the second and final edition of the 2024 Lehigh Valley Punk Rock Flea Market. For those keeping track, this was our fourth LVPRFM overall. This latest edition, though, featured our best turnout yet with around 1,000 attendees passing through the Ice House over the course of six hours. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

We also want to give a huge thanks to our vendors. The amount of creativity, artistry, and unique creations on display was amazing. If you needed a reminder of just how strong our community is, there was no better example than Sunday. Our well-wishes go out to the vendors who had to cancel last-minute due to illness or unforeseen plans. And another round of thanks go to WDIY 88.1 FM, Lehigh Valley Public Radio, for sponsoring the event.

Check out some photos from the event below. We’ll see you at the next one!

Brooklyn’s Matte Black have been making swirling, heavy rock since 2012. Their time together has been anything but musically stagnant, though. From the the doom metal feel of 2015’s Dust of This Planet to the psychedelic touches in 2019’s Psyche to the addition of synthesizers on their new album, 2023’s Portrait, Matte Black has never been afraid to evolve wherever the music takes them.

The three members of the band — Matt (guitar, vocals), Fidel (drums), and Steve (bass) — joined us at Shards in Bethlehem, PA in July of 2023 after wrapping up a set at the well-known dive bar and late night musical oasis, The Funhouse. The band had just released a pair of albums that are a companion to one another, the aforementioned Portrait and the ambient soundscape-filled Landscape.

The show was free and open to the public. The music kicked off at 6 PM and lasted until 8:30 PM. Check out some photos below.

The Jawnstowne Standard may be one of the Lehigh Valley’s newest punk bands, but the four members all have long histories playing loud and raucous DIY music. After the break-up of Valley punk band Twin 55, Bruce, Brock, and Matt regrouped under the banner As Years Pass, whose name they would eventually change to the Jawnstowne Standard in 2019 with the addition of former Road Sodas drummer A.C.. The Jawnstowne Standard delivers an earnest style of straightforward, melodic punk rock whose songs deal with “real life, real situations, the good times, and the bad times,” according to the band’s bio. The Jawnstowne Standard released their debut EP 'Punxsutawney' in October 2019, recorded by Matt Molchany at Shards.

The four members of the band joined us on the roof of the Flatiron Building on Bethlehem’s south side on a hot day in August 2020 for this Rooftop Session. This session debuted on WDIY 88.1 FM in September 2020.

Austin, TX post-punk band Beth Israel stopped by Shards on their tour in October 2014 to record this Shards Session. The band had just released their album Dental Denial on the indie record label Dull Tools, a label run by Parquet Courts’ Andrew Savage which was receiving some national attention. This session’s files were originally thought to be lost after a hard drive at Shards crashed shortly after the recording. Recently, we were able to recover the files, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring you this Shards Session with Beth Israel, albeit 4.5 years later. In honor of Beth Israel’s Shards Session we also take a look at some recent releases from Dull Tools; plus, we take a look at some upcoming DIY shows in the Lehigh Valley. Nazareth punk band The Road Sodas are no strangers to controversy. The night before recording this Rooftop Session with us in October 2018, the band had an annual benefit show in their hometown shut down by the police. Simply put, the four members of the Road Sodas know how to put on a memorable show. In their interview, they describe playing live as their favorite part of being a band and they brought that enthusiasm to the Cigar Factory roof for our session. The band powered through four songs and didn’t stop before launching into a fifth. Enjoy that bonus track not heard on the on-air broadcast.

Also on the show, we preview songs from the bands coming to the next event in the Tape Swap Presents concert series at Lit Roastery in Bethlehem on February 7, 2019: Philadelphia synth pop outfit Pool Radio, fellow Philly artist Lexi Campion of Grayling, and Jordan from Kutztown aka The Most Beautiful Images. We wrap up the show with Shamus’ interview with Jamie Holmes, the owner of Double Decker Records in Allentown. They discuss Double Decker’s 22 year journey from underground DIY punk meeting place in the late 90’s to the current wave of vinyl resurgence in the 2010’s. Jamie also picks out songs to listen to from some of his favorite Lehigh Valley DIY bands throughout the years.

A lot of bands like to turn up the volume when they play live, but Spirit Of… have become known for their high volume live performances and towering amp set-up. Brooklyn musicians Frederick Nicholson and Mikael Tarkela use volume as one of the tools in their musical palette as they paint soundscapes with guitars, keys, vocals, and samples. After discovering Spirit Of… last year, we had to include their album Glossolalia on our list of Favorite DIY Releases of 2017. In March 2018, we invited them to Bethlehem to play one of our Tape Swap Presents shows at Lit Roastery, and they joined us afterwards at Shards to record this session.

We also mark the occasion of the Tape Swap Radio Stage returning for this year’s Allentown ArtsFest, which runs September 28-30, 2018. Matt and Shamus pick out music from some bands and artists coming to the Tape Swap Radio Stage, then ArtsFest Creative Director Brandon Wunder joins us with a mix of music from bands playing the Main Stage.

Spread across Northeast PA and the Lehigh Valley are the four members of Under the Clothesline, a sleazy garage psych band who have begun to make an impression on the Valley’s music fans in the last couple of years. Under the Clothesline wear their music’s grime on their sleeves, sounding dirty and dingy with a disarmingly relaxed vocal style that seems to hint at something sinister lurking just beneath the surface. The band has previously performed at one of Tape Swap's shows at the Ice House in Bethlehem and our stage at Allentown ArtsFest. The band joined us on the Cigar Factory roof on a cold, windy day in April 2018.

We also feature interviews and song selections from some of the young up-and-comers behind new ventures in the Valley's DIY music scene. First, Chandler Davis, Zak Gerhart, and Pat Lilly from multi-media production company Lab Two Twelve stop by. Then, later in the show, we pick up on that conversation with Chris Kennedy from DIY Easton show space Live at 13.

Bethlehem, PA's This Way to the Egress can only begin to be described as a concoction of gypsy, vaudeville, punk rock, and circus music. Even that description doesn't do them justice. Maybe a better way to put it is, they are simultaneously the circus' main attraction and P.T. Barnum's outlandish showmanship rolled into one. The Lehigh Valley showmen and women admit they did the usual band trajectory backwards, starting with hitting the road soon after forming in 2008 and only recently focusing on building a solid local prescence to grow roots in their hometown. With Egress' fourth studio album, Onward! Up a Frightening Creek, set to be released in September 2017, the band is making strides to grow those local roots, performing at at a slew of LV venues in the summer and fall of 2017 including the new One Centre Square venue in Easton, The Funhouse in Bethlehem, Allentown ArtsFest, and this session for Tape Swap Radio recorded in June 2017.

This session marks Tape Swap Radio's first Rooftop Session and we're thrilled to be able to bring bands up to the roof of the four-story Cigar Factory building in Allentown. The building is home to the Alternative Gallery, Coffee House without Limits, Inkhound Press, and more. The Cigar Factory has been host to a lot of live music in the LV's DIY community throughout the 90's and early 2000's, so it is fortuitous that our project has ended up on the roof of this same building. Roots run deep.

We'd like to introduce you to a new live series that Tape Swap Radio will be launching on Friday, July 14, 2017 called "Rooftop Sessions". We've partnered with The Alternative Gallery to record original live sessions on the roof of the four-story Cigar Factory building in Allentown. The Rooftop Sessions will feature HD video including aerial drone footage courtesy of our friend George Wacker.

Our first Rooftop Session is with Lehigh Valley gypsy/vaudeville/punk-inspired band This Way to the Egress and is set to premiere this Friday on WDIY 88.1 FM with video available online on Sunday, July 16th. The next ‘Rooftop Session’ will feature up-and coming Wilkes-Barre indie rock band Doghouse Charlie & The Buck Knife, set to premiere in August.

The Alternative Gallery director and Cigar Factory building superintendent, Brandon Wunder, has worked with Tape Swap Radio in the past and will be allowing Tape Swap exclusive access for recording on the Cigar Factory's roof.

“This project is the culmination of several years of collaborative foundation building efforts by Tape Swap Radio, the Alternative Gallery, and an assortment of unique creators in the area. Setting the performances against Allentown’s changing skyline serves as the perfect metaphor for the strengthening of the arts in our area. These sessions are a special way to exhibit the vibrant art and music community in the Lehigh Valley and literally raise them to a new platform.”

— Brandon Wunder, The Alternative Gallery

“[The Cigar Factory] is a building with deep roots in the Lehigh Valley’s music scene. From touring bands to local bands, the walls of this building have seen a lot of live music throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. I think it’s interesting that a project like this would find a home on the roof of this particular building.”

— Matt Molchany, Tape Swap Radio

“We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to showcase the music of the Lehigh Valley’s thriving D.I.Y. and independent music scene. We’re hoping that our Rooftop Sessions will expose these bands to a wider audience.”

— Shamus McGroggan, Tape Swap Radio

Other fourth anniversary initiatives launched by Tape Swap Radio include a redesigned website which will now serve as an archive for all 40+ sessions that Tape Swap Radio has recorded over the past four years, a quarterly zine documenting the Lehigh Valley music scene which will debut at LV Zine Fest on August 19th at 2nd Base Vintage in Easton, and a new season of bands recorded at the Shards recording studio in Bethlehem. Guests for Tape Swap Radio’s upcoming ‘Shards Sessions’ include Lehigh Valley bands Bad American, Poor Luther’s Bones, Daytime Cleaners, Small Mess, Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air, and more.

Tape Swap Radio's 4th anniversary kicked off last month with a handful off new projects. One of our efforts has been the expansion our Tape Swap Presents concert series. We want to be able to bring you more live events at more venues in the Lehigh Valley. To help make that happen, we are excited to begin working more closely with two great musicians and all-around good people, Eddie Mackavage and Andrew Rutledge. Eddie has already been helping out with Tape Swap operations, so we are glad to have him aboard in a much bigger capacity. Eddie plays in Lehigh Valley bands Georgia Foreman and Swimmer's Lungs. Andrew is new to the Tape Swap team. He plays in LV bands Doctor Ransom and Blood Moon.

New Orleans' U.S. Nero stopped by Shards to record a session in September 2015 while they were in the middle of their tour. U.S. Nero stands in stark contrast to the jam bands and cover bands you'll find in tourist areas of New Orleans. Jazz, punk, garage, and surf collide into a heady mix to make U.S. Nero's sound and, like so many other bands in NOLA's DIY scene, its members split their time between other area bands.

We're turning the spotlight on New Orleans and Hawaii with this show.

For our staff picks, we decided to do some scene archeology into the DIY music coming out of Hawaii. Its completely unique structure piqued our interest but its members' passion for the scene is what won us over. A big part of the music in Honolulu and surrounding areas is Failed Orbit Records started by Ray Farias and Kevin Tit. In 2014, Rawb Cunningham, Eduard Panen, Will and Jo Adair, and Jhune Liwanag joined Failed Orbit with the goal of using label to book shows that featured mainland bands. From throwing fundraiser shows to flying bands over to the islands, Failed Orbit has injected the Hawaii scene with new life in the last three years.

Tape Swap Radio returned to the Ice House in Bethlehem last Friday for the latest show in our Tape Swap Presents concert series with Manbeast, Swimmer's Lungs, and Iron Lung. The show was a huge success, raising $730 for Tabor Children's Services' youth mentoring program in the Lehigh Valley, so thank you to everyone who came out and tipped generously for food and drinks!

There was a last-minute line-up change where Burglary Years was removed from the bill after several people contacted us with multiple allegations of abuse towards a member of the band. We take a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse at our shows. We encourage anyone to contact us with any concerns they may have about our events. We'd just like to add our thanks to the guys in Swimmer's Lungs who stepped in the day-of to fill the slot.

Lehigh Valley locals Manbeast and Swimmer's Lungs have both played at our previous Ice House show last August with Tile and Couch Slut. While Manbeast has been a mainstay in the LV scene for almost 5 years now, Swimmer's Lungs are still relative newcomers. This performance saw the band even more laser-focused and unrelenting compared to their last appearance with us 8 months ago. The difference might just be the recording of their debut album, No Expectations, which was released earlier this year.

Seattle's Iron Lung were making their first Lehigh Valley appearance since playing at Jan's Room in Allentown in 2007. For this show, Iron Lung performed songs off of their latest album, White Glove Test, as well as older material. Their short between-song banter consisted of apologizing for being late after being stuck in traffic coming from New York, as well as seeing a police car hit a pedestrian in the confusion.

Check out some photos of Manbeast and Swimmer's Lungs courtesy of Laura Lippey Photography below. Our next Tape Swap Presents show will take place at the Ice House on Friday, July 28, 2017 and will be raising funds for Allentown ArtsFest 2017. See you then.
