In this session we’re taking it one step further by looking at the role we play to partner with God in the dream. God never intended for us to do a dream for him. Instead, God calls us to pursue a dream with Him. In other words, it’s a partnership with God. And if you’re pursuing a dream bigger than you, you have to partner with God because it’s too big to do alone.

How the Holy Spirit Helps the Sheep:

The Holy Spirit Frees Us

2 Corinthians 3:17 (NLT) – For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

The Holy Spirit Forms Us

Romans 8:5-6 (NLT) – Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

In an effort to remain calm and collected, I decided that this would be an excellent time for a ceremony I had planned as an expression of gratitude and hope….I settled on a well-known expression of spirituality: celebrating the first Christian Communion on the moon….I wanted to do something positive for the world, so the spiritual aspect appealed greatly to me…. So, during those first hours on the moon, before the planned eating and resting periods, I reached into my personal preference kit and pulled out the communion elements with a three-by-five card on which I had written the words of Jesus: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.” I poured a thimbleful of wine from a sealed plastic container into a small chalice, and waited for the wine to settle down as it swirled in the one-sixth Earth gravity of the moon. My comments to the world were inclusive: “I would like to request a few moments of silence…and to invite each person listening in, wherever and whomever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours, and to give thanks in his or her own way.” I silently read the Bible passage as I partook of the wafer and the wine, and offered a private prayer for the task at hand and the opportunity I had been given. —Buzz Aldrin

Realization: Waiting seasons don’t have to be wasted seasons

1 - There’s WONDER in the WANDER

Stage 1: Success

Stage 2: Warning

Three Cures for Comparison: 

Gratitude: Give Thanks for What You Have

Philippians 1:2-5 (NLT) – May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. 4 Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, 5 for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.

Key Thought: Jealousy makes us resent God’s goodness in other people’s lives and ignore God’s goodness in our own lives.

Celebration: Rejoice in the Success of Others

Philippians 1:15-17 (NLT) – “It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News. Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me.”

Philippians 1:18 (NLT) – “But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.”

Key Thought: “Stop being jealous of people in their winning season. You don’t know what they lost in their losing season.”

Contentment: Be Satisfied Where You Are

Philippians 4:10-14 (NLT) – How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. 11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:11 (AMP) – Not that I speak from [any personal] need, for I have learned to be content [and self-sufficient through Christ, satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or uneasy] regardless of my circumstances. 

I’m often asked if, given the chance, I’d live my life the same way again. I have wondered about that as well—for about five seconds. When I think of the juvenile delinquency, injuries, torture, and many near-death experiences, the answer is a definite no. That would be crazy. Of course, enduring and surviving those challenges led to many years of positive influence which helped neutralize the catastrophes and eventually delivered great rewards. I’ve been honored and blessed with impossible adventures and opportunities, a wonderful family, friends, and fans all over the world. That I’d gladly repeat. It’s obvious that one part of the story can’t happen without the other. And so I accept it. I am content.

Comparison Always Results In: 

Jealousy

Jealousy makes us resent God’s goodness in other people’s lives and ignore God’s goodness in our own lives.

1 Samuel 18:6-7 (NLT) – When the victorious Israelite army was returning home after David had killed the Philistine, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul. Amy’s Post: What I’m about to say will most likely be misunderstood, or for some, hard to hear. Recently I watched a TV show about some children who have found a portal to go back in time and they are working to change something bad that happened.

After finishing several episodes I started thinking, if I found a portal and could go back in time, to May 19, 2014, would I change things? And as hard as it is to say (and I’m sure for you to understand) I came to the conclusion that I would not change things. Although I still deal with grief and lingering trauma…I would not change things… and even I’m surprised by my response.

What situation in your life do you believe Jesus has mismanaged for you? What I’ve learned is that Jesus is willing to be misunderstood by us in order to do good things for us. I don’t understand or have all the answers but I know that He works all things together for our good…and, oh there was a time I could not stand to hear that verse…but it is such a powerful (hard to understand) truth.

THE FIRST IS GIVEN BY FAITH ON THE FIRST 1 Corinthians 16:2 (NLT) – On the first day of each week, you should each put aside a portion of the money you have earned. Don’t wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once.

Mark’s Tithing Story Due to poor decisions I had made, I had been at a point in my life where I did not have any extra money, and at times had to decide which bill I was going to pay and which one could maybe slip a little. I was using credit cards to pay bills, creating a wheel that kept on spinning into frustration and despair financially. I was a financial mess (which affected other areas of my life as well).

I was giving to church, but not tithing. I gave a little each time I went, but it was out of what I had leftover, after making decisions on what to pay. It was never very much.

The church I was attending began a challenge. The challenge was to tithe (yes, a full 10% of a person’s income) for 90 days. Their challenge was that if a person’s life did not change for the better within that 90 days, the church would give that money back.

The numbers regarding my income and bills did not support doing this. I did not have enough money coming in to pay my bills. How could I possibly give away 10% on top of that. However, after thinking about it a lot, and praying for guidance (admittedly, my faith was not very strong then), I decided to give it a try. I had no intention of asking for my money back after the 90 days if things did not show improvement, but that option was there.

I made it through the 90 days of tithing and made all of my financial obligations. I made changes in spending. I was able to earn a little more at work through assignments. My attitude changed, this time for the better. That was a turning point in my life…

Now, my tithe to church (based upon my gross income, not my net income) is typically the first “payment” I make each month. Anything else I give is above and beyond the tithe. And I am blessed beyond measure….

We are debt free again, and it is a freedom unlike any other. It opens so many doors and opportunities to give. God blesses the giver. My blessings have come in so many ways; from getting a grasp on anxiety, depression, anger, and PTSD issues to simply becoming more aware of the everyday sightings and hearings from God.

Advice from the future: Pursue Peace with Others

Matthew 5:9 (NLT) 9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.

How do we actively pursue peace?

Hebrews 12:14-15 (NLT) 14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

How do we ensure that no one fails to receive the grace of God - we give grace - the best example.

Romans 3:23-24 (NLT) 23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

No one EVER has been more wronged than God.

Jeremiah 31:34 (NLT) God says… “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

Before we can give grace we have to understand grace and accept grace.

Peter’s Failures:

Failure #1: Faithlessness

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” —Matthew 14:31 (NLT)

Failure #2: Rebuke

But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! Failure #3: Pride

Failure #4: Asleep at the Wheel

Nehemiah: Rebuilding the Wall of Jerusalem

The first chapter of the Book of Nehemiah introduces the book bearing his name as a resident of Susa, the capital of the Persian Empire. When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were still broken down more than a half-century after the completion of the rebuilding of the temple, he “sat down and wept,” fasting and praying before God (Neh. 1:4). Implicitly, he was formulating a plan to remedy the situation in Jerusalem.

The connection between the temple and the wall is significant for the theology of work. The temple might seem to be a religious institution, while the walls are a secular one. But God led Nehemiah to work on the walls, no less than he led Ezra to work on the temple. Both the sacred and the secular were necessary to fulfill God’s plan to restore the nation of Israel.

If the walls were unfinished, the temple was unfinished too. The work was of a single piece. The reason for this is easy to understand. Without a wall, no city in the ancient Near East was safe from bandits, gangs and wild animals, even though the empire might be at peace. The more economically and culturally developed a city was, the greater the value of things in the city, and the greater the need for the wall. The temple, with its rich decorations, would have been particularly at risk. Practically speaking, no wall means no city, and no city means no temple.

“They worshiped together regularly at the Temple each day, met in small groups in homes for communion, and shared their meals with great joy and thankfulness,” —Acts 2:46

“My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life.”

Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. 2 For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. God’s will is for you to be holy… —1 Thessalonians 4:1-3a

Three Ways God Calls us to Character:

1.) Morally

God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. —1 Thessalonians 4:3

Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor—5 not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. —1 Thessalonians 4:4-5

Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife, for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before. 7 God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. 8 Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. —1 Thessalonians 4:6-8

2.) Relationally

But we don’t need to write to you about the importance of loving each other, for God himself has taught you to love one another. 10 Indeed, you already show your love for all the believers throughout Macedonia. Even so, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you to love them even more. —1 Thessalonians 4:9-10

3.) Vocationally

Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. —1 Thessalonians 4:11

For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you. 8 We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you.9 We certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give you an example to follow. 10 Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” 11 Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business. 12 We command such people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their own living. 13 As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good. —2 Thessalonians 3:7-13

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” —Colossians 3:23

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. What does it mean to be “Called to Christ”?

1.) Called out of Darkness

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness… —1 Peter 2:9

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness… —Colossians 1:13a

2.) Called into Light

…for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” —1 Peter 2:9b-10

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! —2 Corinthians 5:17

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. —Colossians 1:13-14

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. —2 Corinthians 5:21

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. —Luke 9:23

Two Keys to Encounter God’s Power:

Impossible Prayers

Joshua 10:8 (NLT) – “Do not be afraid of them, for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”

Joshua 10:12-13 (NLT) – “On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said, ‘Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day.”

Joshua 10:14 (NLT) – “There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for Israel that day!”

Ruth Haley Barton: “What is the use of praying if at the very moment of prayer, we have so little confidence in God that we are busy planning our own kind of answer to our prayer.”[i]

Irrational Faith**

Mark 5:25-26 (NLT) – A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. 26 She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse.

Mark 5:27-28 (NLT) – She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”

Mark 5:29-32 (NLT) – Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. 30 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” 31 His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it.

Mark 5:33-34 (NLT) – Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, “Daughter, YOUR FAITH has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”

Tim Keller: “There is nothing illogical about miracles if a Creator God exists. If a God exists who is big enough to create the universe in all its complexity and vastness, why should a mere miracle be such a mental stretch.”

Be Born of the Spirit John 3:3 (NLT) – “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

John 3:5-8 (NLT) – “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

John 3:16-17 (NLT) – “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

Romans 3:22 (NLT) – We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Titus 3:4 (NLT) – But—When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

Be Filled with the Spirit Matthew 3:11 (NLT) – “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

Acts 2:1-4 (NIV) – When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:14-17 (NIV) – Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2:36-39 (NLT) – “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” 37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God [SALVATION], and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins [WATER BAPTISM]. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit [SPIRIT BAPTISM]. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

Acts 1:4-5 (NLT) – Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 2:39 (NLT) – This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

Be Led by the Spirit Romans 8:14 (NLT) – For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

Galatians 5:16 (NLT) – So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

Three Insights from Moses about God’s Presence:

Moses Valued God’s Presence

Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.” 4 When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes. 5 For the Lord had told Moses to tell them, “You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you.” 6 So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry or fine clothes. —Exodus 33:3-6

“If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” 17 “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” —Exodus 33:15-16

Moses Practiced God’s Presence It was Moses’ practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the Lord would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside. —Exodus 33:7-8

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. —Jeremiah 29:13

As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the Lord spoke with Moses…Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. —Exodus 33:9, 11a

The Attitude of Judging

When we judge, our misinformed assumptions produce misguided accusations.

Don’t speak evil against each other… —James 4:11

Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. 12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor? —James 4:11-12

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. —Matthew 7:1-2

The Spirit of Pride

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. —James 4:13-16

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. —James 4:17

The Love of Money

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. 2 Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment. 4 For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 5 You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you. —James 5:1-6

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? 3 Ways That Prayer Changes Everything

1.) Prayer Activates Our Faith

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. —Hebrews 11:16

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. —Matthew 17:20b

If you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop praying about it.

2) Prayer Aligns Our Heart’s Desires with God’s Will

“Father, if you are willing take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” —Luke 22:42

Every Situation

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. —James 5:13

Every Emotion

Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. —James 5:13

Every Sickness

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. —James 5:14

Every Battle

Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. —James 5:16

Three Types of Conflict:

External Conflict

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you?… —James 4:1

Internal Conflict

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. —James 4:1-2

*Key Thought: Our unfulfilled internal wants produce our uncontrolled external wars. *

Upward Conflict

Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. 3 And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. —James 4:2b-3

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. 5 Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. —James 4:4-5

And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” —James 4:6

Upward Peace Creates Inward Peace That Produces Outward Peace

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. —James 4:7-8

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. —Matthew 28:19

Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. —James 4:19-10

If you are wise and understand God’s ways… —James 3:13

So give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours?” —1 Kings 3:9

“I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had before or will ever have again. 13 I will also give you what you have not asked for: all your life you will have wealth and honor, more than that of any other king. 14 And if you obey me and keep my laws and commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life.” —1 Kings 3:12-14

Godly Wisdom Produces an Honorable Life

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life… —James 3:13

Wisdom is “skill in living righteously.”

“Knowledge—even biblical knowledge—is like sodium in raw form. Sodium can be destructive to humans…until it gets converted into a higher form: sodium chloride, or table salt. In the same way, knowledge is never an end in itself. It must be converted into a higher form—wisdom—for it to become useful and beneficial to us.” —Wayne Cordeiro

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. —Matthew 7:24

“When truth comes to the wise person, they adjust themselves to the truth, but when truth comes to the fool, they adjust the truth.” —Dr. Henry Cloud

So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. —Proverbs 9:8

Godly Wisdom Produces Humble Service

James 3:13 (NLT) – If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.

James 3:14-15a (NLT) – But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom.

James 3:15-16 (NLT) – For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

Godly Wisdom Cultivates Healthy Relationships But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. —James 3:17

When you talk to or respond to a friend, a family member, or even a stranger, are the words you speak…

Peace-loving Gentle Yielding to others Full of mercy Full of good deeds Without favoritism Always sincere

Three Truths about the Tongue:

1 - The Tongue is Powerful

James 3:3-5a (NLT) – We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

James 3:2b (NLT) – For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

2 - The Tongue is Destructive

James 3:5b-6 (NLT) – But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

Proverbs 16:27 (ESV) – A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.

3 - The Tongue is Double-Minded

James 3:7-8 (NLT) – People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.

James 3:9-12 (NLT) – Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11 Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12 Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.

Proverbs 18:21 (MSG) – Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

James: Practical Faith for Tough Times

Hearing Jesus, Seeing Jesus, and Being like Jesus

My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. —James 1:19-21

Hearing Jesus When this pandemic hit how quick were you to lisen to what the Lord was saying?

Pray Read His Word Seek Wisdom

But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like someone looking at his own face[f] in a mirror. For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of person he was. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who works—this person will be blessed in what he does. —James 1:22-25

Seeing Jesus

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself. —James 2:14-17

Being Like Jesus

Three Questions to Help You Handle Hardship 1. What Form Does My Hardship Take? A. Trials

James 1:2 (NLT) – Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. A. Temptations

James 1:12a (NLT) – God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.

James 1:13-15 (NLT) – And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

“I was in my late 20’s, single, and with every prospect of remaining so. Sometimes lust or a bit of fantasizing would seem so inviting and so easy to justify. After all, hadn’t I already given up more than most Christians just by being disabled? Didn’t my wheelchair entitle me to a little slack now and then?”

“When God allows you to suffer, do you have tendency to use your trials as an excuse for sinning? Or do you feel that since you’ve given God a little extra lately by taking abuse, that He owes you a “day off?

How Will I Face My Hardship? A. Choose Joy James 1:2 (NLT) – Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.

Hebrews 12:2b (NLT) – …Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

B. Patiently Endure

James 1:3-4 (NLT) – For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) – We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

Warren Wiersbe: “In the Bible, patience is not a passive acceptance of circumstances. It is a courageous perseverance in the face of suffering and difficulty.”

C. Seek Wisdom

James 1:5-8 (NLT) – If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

D. Humbly Trust God

James 1:9-11 (NLT) – Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

What Fruit Will My Response to Hardship Produce? James 1:3-4 (NLT) – For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

James 1:12 (NLT) – God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Prov. 31:10b She is more precious than rubies.

Jesus protects her presence in the room…from being removed from the house.
Jesus Restores her dignity…tells her she is worthy and valuable.
Jesus Redeems her life…Go on without worry…“Your faith has saved you.”

In Craig Groeschel’s book Dangerous Prayers,

“Those who wore perfume were sending a bold and fragrant message, “I’m available...for a price.” So when this woman broke open the bottle and poured out the valuable cologne, she wasn’t just parting with the money she had earned. She was parting with her past, her profession, her livelihood. The perfume not only represented the work she used to do; it also represented what she could use to stir up future “business.” When she broke the bottle, she burned her bridges. No going back. She poured out all the perfume on Jesus, symbolizing that she would give him all of her life.”

Four Reasons You Can Put Your Hope in Our Promise-Keeping God:

God is Unchanging James 1:17 (NLT) – Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
God is Trustworthy Hebrews 10:23 (NLT) – Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
God is Truthful Hebrews 6:18 (NLT) – So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
God Keeps His Word Romans 4:21 (NLT) – He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.

“10 years ago, I began waging, what would turn out to be, a 7-year war with God. Yes, it actually took this stubborn woman 7 years to realize that I was never going to win a war with God. In the beginning, my prayers were simple: “Please, Lord, let me have a baby.” But even my most persuasive conversations with God, were followed by years of disappointment, fertility treatments and 3 miscarriages. Eventually, I was so broken that I had no fight left in me. I finally surrendered.

My prayers shifted to, “Lord, please grant me acceptance and peace in my heart. Help me let go of my dreams and trust that your plan is best.” These were the hardest words for a total control freak to say. God knew, under no uncertain terms, that I still thought his plan sucked. However, I was finally willing to try things his way. It was amazing how quickly that peace crept into my life. Michael and I both reached a point of complete contentment with where we were in our lives…to the point where we almost gave up entirely on the idea of having a baby.

It was more out of fear of regret that we decided to use the last few embryos and give it one more try. We agreed that no matter what happened, this was the end…and if we didn’t get a baby, we’d get a dog! We both assumed we would be getting a dog and were just as excited about that.”

Philippians 4:7 (NKJV) – and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

“So, on this day, when I’m looking with complete awe at our baby girl Ainsley, I encourage all of you to surrender to God. Don’t waste years fighting. Two Ways to Rejoice:

Rejoice with Your Will Max Lucado: “This verse is a call, not to a feeling, but to a decision and a deeply rooted confidence that God exists, that he is in control, and that he is good.”

In a culture of compromise and brokenness, what does it look like to be a positive influence? How do you influence culture while being different from culture? Daniel rose above the cultural norms of Babylon and led with commitment, character, competence, and courage.
