St. Robert Bellarmine once wrote the following:
“If you are wise, then, know that you have been created for the glory of God and your own eternal salvation. This is your goal; this is the center of your life; this is the treasure of your heart. If you reach this goal, you will find happiness. If you fail to reach it, you will find misery. May you consider truly good whatever leads to your goal and truly evil whatever makes you fall away from it. Prosperity and adversity, wealth and poverty, health and sickness, honors and humiliations, life and death, in the mind of the wise man, are not to be sought for their own sake, nor avoided for their own sake. But if they contribute to the glory of God and your eternal happiness, then they are good and should be sought. If they detract from this, they are evil and must be avoided.”

Catechism of Catholic Church -309 If God the Father almighty, the Creator of the ordered and good world, cares for all his creatures, why does evil exist? To this question, as pressing as it is unavoidable and as painful as it is mysterious, no quick answer will suffice. Only Christian faith as a whole constitutes the answer to this question: the goodness of creation, the drama of sin and the patient love of God who comes to meet man by his covenants, the redemptive Incarnation of his Son, his gift of the Spirit, his gathering of the Church, the power of the sacraments and his call to a blessed life to which free creatures are invited to consent in advance, but from which, by a terrible mystery, they can also turn away in advance. There is not a single aspect of the Christian message that is not in part an answer to the question of evil.

Father Eckert and Michael Becker recorded a how to guide to go to confession. This recording was specifically done for the candidates in RCIA. However, it is helpful to everyone and anyone who needs a little help or guidance going to confession.
Act of Contrition My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

ANOINTING after BAPTISM 98. Then the celebrant says: The God of power and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. All: Amen http://www.ibreviary.com/m2/preghiere.php?tipo=Rito&id=103
Catechism of Catholic Church 786 Finally, the People of God shares in the royal office of Christ. He exercises his kingship by drawing all men to himself through his death and Resurrection.211 Christ, King and Lord of the universe, made himself the servant of all, for he came "not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."212 For the Christian, "to reign is to serve him," particularly when serving "the poor and the suffering, in whom the Church recognizes the image of her poor and suffering founder."213 The People of God fulfills its royal dignity by a life in keeping with its vocation to serve with Christ.
The sign of the cross makes kings of all those reborn in Christ and the anointing of the Holy Spirit consecrates them as priests, so that, apart from the particular service of our ministry, all spiritual and rational Christians are recognized as members of this royal race and sharers in Christ's priestly office. What, indeed, is as royal for a soul as to govern the body in obedience to God? And what is as priestly as to dedicate a pure conscience to the Lord and to offer the spotless offerings of devotion on the altar of the heart? http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p123a9p2.htm

Sometimes we are tempted to find excuses and complain, acting as if we could only be happy if a thousand conditions were met. To some extent this is because our “technological society has succeeded in multiplying occasions of pleasure, yet has found it very difficult to engender joy”. - Evangelii Gaudium, 7 http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html

Romans 6:3-9 ;3 Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin. For a dead person has been absolved from sin.If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.

Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis p.29 (http://www.samizdat.qc.ca/arts/lit/PDFs/ScrewtapeLetters_CSL.pdf) The humans live in time but our Enemy destines them to eternity. He therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things, to eternity itself, and to that point of time which they call the Present. For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which our Enemy has of reality as a whole; in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them. He would therefore have them continually concerned either with eternity (which means being concerned with Him) or with the Present — either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Himself, or else obeying the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross, receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure. Our business is to get them away from the eternal, and from the Present. With this in view, we sometimes tempt a human (say a widow or a scholar) to live in the Past. But this is of limited value, for they have some real knowledge of the past and it has a determinate nature and, to that extent, resembles eternity. It is far better to make them live in the Future. Biological necessity makes all their passions point in that direction already, so that thought about the Future inflames hope and fear. Also, it is unknown to them, so that in making them think about it we make them think of unrealities. In a word, the Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity. It is the most completely temporal part of time — for the Past is frozen and no longer flows, and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays. Hence the encouragement we have given to all those schemes of thought such as Creative Evolution, Scientific Humanism, or Communism, which fix men’s affections on the Future, on the very core of temporality. Hence nearly all vices are rooted in the future. Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.

C.S. Lewis -"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket--safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell."

The following questions that Father Eckert answered were the questions that he did not have time to answer at the November 9th Live QandA.
3:17 Before we had the altar rail and the opportunity to kneel to receive communion, we bowed before receiving; do we still bow before we take our place at the rail to receive? 9:38 Rubrics say that there should be a prominent crucifix visible to all the faithful near the altar. Is there any way our large crucifix could be hung in the sanctuary? 15:36 Lately you have been singing the Mass parts in Latin. Is there a specific reason? 19:23 Who established what an indulgence requires of us? The Enchiridion of Indulgences: https://www.basilica.ca/documents/2016/10/Sacred%20Apostolic%20Penitentiary-The%20Enchiridion%20of%20Indulgences.pdf Revelation 3:13- So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 28:11 How much time is spent learning about human emotion and psychology during the education of a priest? 33:42 In prayer, how do you know that you are completely in the presence of God? 42:33 In some countries they are allowing people who are divorced and remarried to receive communion. Doesn't that make the church a lie for contradicting church teaching? FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO: http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/apost_exhortations/documents/hf_jp-ii_exh_19811122_familiaris-consortio.html 48:48 Does Sacred Heart Catholic Church prioritize fund raising requests? There are 3 or 4 fundraisers at any time in addition to the stewardship, capital campaign, and multiple offering envelopes. 58:55 When God did the first union of Man and Woman (Adam and Eve), he said that’s why a woman would leave her parents and ling to her husband. But at that time there was no body other than Adam and Eve so who was he talking about at that time.

This is the recording from a live QandA discussion with Father John Eckert, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salisbury, NC. We apologize for the poor audio quality. This was our first live recording and we had some technical difficulties but on the bright side, at least we got the recording!
2:52 Can you explain the concept of offering it up and the theology behind it? 9:00 How did the Mass evolve from Apostolic times to the format we now know? 18:38 Why is repetition used in prayer? i.e. the rosary, divine mercy chaplet 24:49 Can you explain contemplative prayer? 35:31 Are we allowed to keep some of the ashes after cremation or must they all be buried? 40:15 Can a divorced person receive the most Holy Eucharist? 48:17 Why are the same saints names repeated at every Mass? 55:40 Does the church recognize a marriage if it is not performed by a priest? 1:00:40 How did the ritual of indulgences begin and how was it decided what must be done to receive an indulgence? 1:08:00 What are some practical suggestions to celebrate Advent beyond the obvious of going to Mass or Confession? 1:14:44 How does a saint become a doctor of the church? 1:17:50 Do you have any book recommendations?
List of Questions answered (start time): 1. What do you hope the Vatican will do in response to Vigano's letter and what do you think will actually happen? (3:40) 2. I keep hearing how Pope Francis is corrupt and is covering up the priest scandals. How do we trust our shepherd and respect the office of the papacy given this? (8:29) 3. Will we be having a holy hour of reparation as a parish? (12:24) 4. If some members of the church question the decisions that Father has taken what do you do? (1634) 5. Do the Sacred Heart priests try to get to know all their parishioners? (20:54) 6. With a parish and school the size of Sacred Heart why do we not have a second priest? (27:29) 7. Can you give me information about how the current format of the Mass began? Especially the Preface and the Eucharistic prayers? (31:50) 8. Is there any problem with the Novus Ordo Mass? If so what can we do to fix them? (35:03) 9.Why do we use the word "dare" before the Lord's Prayer as "we dare to say..."? (40:43) 10. At what point in the Mass does the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ? (46:52) 11. Other than Mass, Adoration, and Prayer how can we as individuals build a personal relationship with Christ? (49:37) *What is apologetics (53:52) 12. Is there salvation outside the Church if you aren't ignorant (informed) of the Catholic faith? (54:42) 13. As Catholics how should we look at Capital Punishment? (1:01:44) 14. Can you believe in the evolution theory and still be a Christian? (1:06:38) 15. How you you explain the Trinity to someone who has never been to Church? (1:11:52) 16. Do I have a moral obligation to speak up in class against a professor who is teaching blatant untruths and the other students are believing them? (1:14:52) 17. A number of times after healing Jesus tells the healed to keep it a secret? But just about all of them do go and announce it to the public. Were they not disobeying and how is it different from Adam disobeying? (1:17:01)
Join us as we study together and engage in conversation. Led by Father John Eckert and Pastor Rhodes Woolly, we will discuss the Declaration on the Way, the culmination of 50 years of ecumenical conversation between Lutherans and Catholics. It draws together a litany of 32 consensus statements and 5 general categories where we share common ground.
