🎧 What You'll Learn in This Episode * The Test-Optional Trap: Why withholding test scores at selective schools can work against you and what admissions committees quietly infer. * Unlocking the Common Data Set: How to verify what admitted students are actually submitting—regardless of what tour guides tell you. * Myth Busting "Bad Test Takers": Why low test scores usually stem from knowledge or strategy gaps (and why that's great news for score growth). * The Score Submission Framework: Amy's decision-tree strategy to determine whether submitting your score helps or hurts your odds. * The #1 Long-Term Prep Habit: What students in grades 3–11 should focus on every day to effortlessly build SAT/ACT readiness. * Digital Screen vs. Real Books: Why digital SAT prep requires physical book reading to build high-level reading stamina. * The Adaptive SAT Surprise: Why the digital SAT feels so much harder on test day and how to structure a timeline that beats test fatigue. * Breaking the 1500 Plateau: Key strategic adjustments for high-performing students stuck at top-tier score ceilings.

💡 Notable Quotes "If a school is still test-optional and you withhold scores, you're signaling—whether you mean to or not—that your test scores would be below the 25th percentile of their incoming freshman class."

— Mike Bergin

"They have to be very certain that by not submitting a test score, those other 'cookies' in the portfolio are large enough to fill that space."

— Amy Seeley

"Working on reading skills and vocabulary acquisition is the single most important thing a student can do from 3rd grade all the way through 11th grade."

— Amy Seeley

You don’t need to get accepted into your dream college to be successful.

You may have read the title of this episode and wondered… “Is Julie serious?” Yes, I am! In this episode, I’m going to unpack what I truly mean when I say that you don’t need to get into your dream college to be successful, and what actually matters in the college admissions process and your life.

I’ll also be sharing more interviews from our Passion Project Bootcamp students who resonate with this message. Today they reveal what they learned in the Passion Project Bootcamp Program and how they now apply it to their lives.

Remember, we cannot define our success and our chances of being successful by where we go to college, and I want to put an end to the labelling, identifying and judging people based on this. In this midst of all the noise, you need to find yourself first because that IS actually the strategy to getting accepted into your dream college.

I’m so excited to be sharing this compilation episode with you, where three of our Passion Project Bootcamp students will be sharing their experiences and feedback about the Passion Project Bootcamp Program with you, in their own words!

In this episode, I really want you to understand how this ONE strategy will get you accepted into your dream colleges. I’m confident because this strategy is not about doing more, and it’s not about burning yourself out or losing who you are as a person just to get into these high-ranked and competitive colleges. It’s also not about copying what everyone else is doing, because that is NOT going to work for you.

In this episode you’ll meet our Passion Project Bootcamp students, Elizabeth, Shivani and Yashaswi, who each reveal how this ONE strategy we teach in Passion Project Bootcamp will not only get them accepted into their dream colleges, but how this strategy transformed their lives as an individual.

Mindset is key, and the shifts that you’ll learn in the Passion Project Bootcamp Program will lead to so many breakthroughs, including more confidence, loving yourself more, acknowledging your worth, knowing what you're passionate about, and identifying your strength and potential.

I hope that you’re able to relate to these students and what they share today, and realize that you’re not alone in this process. I want you to feel inspired so that you can take action towards your dream!

Recently, I posted a poll on my Instagram and asked what my followers would like to hear me talk about on this podcast episode. The topic that most students wanted me to discuss was the 3 Rules For Success, which is what I will share here with you today!

We often think that success is linear. We also like to think that success is hard. In this episode, I want to break down how to reframe the way you think about success and how you can actually be successful in your college admissions process and in life.

Today I’m sharing with you a short interview I did with one of my Class of 2021 students, Alexcis, who recently got accepted into UPenn, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, and Cornell! Not to mention, Alexcis also received a merit scholarship offer at USC, and in this episode, she reveals how she was able to do this, plus what she believes was the secret to her success.

This interview really goes to show how only having good grades and perfect SAT/ACT scores won’t cut it anymore. So how do you standout, while having a feeling of purpose and passion? It’s by working on a few of the right things, and not just by doing more things (and overwhelming yourself in the process).

Also, I have an exciting announcement for you! I’m hosting a brand-new live workshop for the month of September, and if you go to https://juliekimconsulting.com/live you can register and reserve your spot now (hurry, spots are limited and fill up fast)! In this live workshop, you will:

About 6 months ago, I started interviewing Passion Project Bootcamp students and sharing those coaching sessions with listeners here on the podcast. We received so much good feedback from listeners that resonated with these episodes, telling us how much they learned about our coaching process in Passion Project Bootcamp, as well as the support they can expect by joining the program.

In this episode, I am interviewing and coaching another one of my Passion Project Bootcamp students, Zeeshan. His main question is how he can really know if his idea for a Passion Project is good enough, and the ways that he can make it even better.

This is a frequently asked question we get, which is why I wanted to share it with you today in the hopes that the way I coach Zeeshan with this topic will help you as well.

Remember, this is about more than just creating a Passion Project, it’s really about self-exploration and getting to know yourself in order to get outside of your comfort zone. When you do, that is where the growth really happens.

I’m excited to announce that we just released a new FREE workbook that you can download to get started thinking about self-exploration and your Passion Project ideas. Go to https://juliekimconsulting.com/workbook to get your copy now!

Why does college cost so much? What really goes on in financial aid offices in this country, and will going to college pay off in the end? These are all big questions we’ve explored before on this podcast, and in today’s episode, I’m speaking with an expert guest who has literally written the book on this important subject.

Ron Lieber is the author of The Price You Pay for College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make, and what he shares today will give you a very different perspective on all things money, as it relates to the college admissions process.

As you’ve heard me talking about in recent episodes, the Ivy League Formula Program is our intensive 6-month college consulting program, and it’s opening for enrollment very soon. Do keep in mind! We are only accepting 30 students this round, and it will only be open once or twice this year. To be notified when The Ivy League Formula Program opens up, you can put yourself on the waitlist at http://juliekimconsulting.com/waitlist, and Passion Project Bootcamp members will be given priority for the first spots that are available.

Today I have a coaching session with my Passion Project Bootcamp student, Mercedes. I’m so grateful to attract amazing students like Mercedes who are so committed to their goals and motivated to achieve them.

Happy New Year! Happy 2021! It’s a new year, and even if it seems not much is changing during the ongoing global pandemic, it just feels like we have a new start in January 2021. To get the year started right, I’m sharing an amazing coaching session with one of my Passion Project Bootcamp students, Anjali.

Anjali asks so many good questions in this coaching session, and a big one is about how many school clubs she should be joining. I reveal whether or not joining a lot of clubs will help your college application or not. As you’ll hear, the answer will be a bit different depending on your theme, which is why having a strong theme is very important in the overall process.

Creating a unique theme for your college application is something I focus on teaching in my 1-year college consulting program, The Passion Project Bootcamp. Click here to learn more about our amazing program!

She also asks a question about how to land research positions, and a few more college admissions questions that I think you’d find relevant to your current situation too!

So here’s your 1st step to take! You can register for the free training here. This is where I share 4 strategies that will help you land research and intern positions, create amazing passion projects, and get awesome results for your college admissions journey.

As we enter this new year, I am excited to share with you another coaching session I had with my Passion Project Bootcamp student, Erica! I’m sharing this coaching call with Erica on the podcast because I want you to see what it would look like if you were to work with me inside of The Passion Project Bootcamp or The Ivy League Formula Program.

In this episode with Erica we cover a lot of different important topics, and I answer the biggest questions she has. This includes whether or not she should work on her Passion Project with friends, and how to motivate them if this is what she ultimately decides to do. We also look at how she can navigate things if there’s a shift in her academic interests and major, and so much more.

I think you’ll learn a lot about the many ways to make your application stand out, and the different ways to show who you are to colleges that you want to get accepted to. Remember, it’s not about showing the best side of yourself always, and having 10, 20 or even 30 extracurriculars. It’s more about showing who you are in the most authentic and compelling way, and then backing that up with evidence.

If you are like Erica and have questions about the college admissions process, then I really want you to check out my free training! You can register for the free training here. This is where I share strategies that will help you land research and intern positions, create amazing passion projects, and get awesome results for your college admissions journey.

Do you have perfect test scores, yet you’re still worrying about not getting accepted into your dream college (given the fierce competition?)

Today’s guest is Anthony, a current student of The Passion Project Bootcamp, and in this episode, he discusses his concerns about getting rejected - even though he has a strong GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

As mentioned recently, we’re switching the podcast up a bit to share the behind-the-scenes happenings here at Julie Kim Consulting.

If you don’t already know, I have a signature digital program called The Passion Project Bootcamp, with a lot of incredible students enrolled in it. I’ll be sharing the 1-on-1 coaching sessions I have with these students here on the podcast, to not only benefit each of them, but to also help you as the listener out as well.

Today’s call is with Sonya, a junior in high school whose passion project has instilled a sense of purpose and a mission in her.

Creating a passion project has not only created a standout factor for Sonya’s application, but she’s feeling so excited about it, which you’ll hear today in this conversation. She asks me some important questions around mindset, specifically how to not feel guilty when she doesn’t complete everything on her to-do list, as well as what she can do to stop comparing herself to others (and who hasn’t done this)!

We also look at how to incorporate passion projects into college essays, the way to get published in newspapers and magazines, and I even edit and make suggestions on the Professor Outreach email that she is sending out to professors.

There is a lot of strategy and mindset tips packed into this episode!

Awesome news!!

GPA is the #1 factor in getting accepted into your dream Ivy League and top-tier colleges.

Knowing this, high school students stay up until 2 AM studying for APUSH, AP Chemistry, or writing English papers. However, no matter what you do, you can’t seem to get an A on your APUSH chapter test. You’re always landing at the B and C range. No matter how hard you study, it doesn’t work. You start blaming your teachers for giving you too much work and you start to lose motivation.

“With my B’s and/or C’s, will I be able to get accepted into my dream college?”

In the worst scenario, you start to doubt your capacity as a student. Am I smart enough? Good enough?

Today, I’m going to share with you why you weren’t able to get A’s on your quizzes and tests even though you studied. This episode has nothing to do with surface-level and generic strategies such as sleep early, don’t procrastinate, ask your friends, create a study group, and the like. This is a powerful episode that will shift your mindset and identity so that you can get your first A on your next chapter test.
