This episode was recorded forever ago and I just couldn’t get it fit in. I figured with 2021 on the horizon and many families wondering HOW they can help in the new year now was a perfect time. I have many friends who have done foster care and have even adopted from foster care. Foster parents are some of the BEST people I know. It is a true ministry that is greatly needed today. In this episode we talk about the legality of foster care and homeschooling, how Christian parents, can minister to teens coming from foster care without “pushing” religion or church onto them, accommodating homeschooling your biological or adopted children while opening your home to foster care and also accommodating those children’s needs/therapies/etc and so much more.

Today’s episode is a Fess Up Friday episode and I want to share with you one big takeaway. Amy and I talk about second generation homeschooling and how much things have changed from when she was homeschooled to now. I can see this. And not all of the changes are for the positive. I am realizing after 2020 which I talked some about in my lessons learned episode that we need to go back to the basics a bit. Simpler times. It will make all of our homeschools a lot more joyful. Amy says, “My identity is in Christ not in my work as a homeschool mom” and I just wanted to yell YES. We put so much pressure on ourselves for perfection, but guys God did not call us to perfection. If He did, we wouldn’t need HIM. This episode is full of nuggets of wisdom, and I am sure will help you have a more joyful homeschool.

Today we are kicking off a super fun series all about homeschool methods. I introduced this series a couple of days ago with my favorite homeschool method. In this episode, we talk about unit studies with second-generation homeschooler Heather Haupt.

Because so many people are homeschooling right now, and because sometimes even after a year or two (or five) of homeschooling you change your method up a bit I wanted to do a series all about the different methods of homeschooling. So, for the month of September, I have SIX episodes all about the homeschool methods.
Today I am peeling back the curtain on a day in the life of MY Homeschool. We are eclectic homeschoolers. What does that mean? We use a variety of homeschooling resources. My heart wants to be Charlotte Mason, but the reality is I can’t do it. So, we use a hodgepodge and have some Charlotte Mason tendencies.
When it comes to being a homeschool mom, no matter which method of homeschooling you use, there is no magic formula to the perfect day. So, while I hope this series gives you a peek into other homeschool methods, I also hope you remember to not measure your homeschool day with any of ours. We are all just balancing. Doing the best we can, and hoping it’s enough. These peeks into the other methods are just that, a peek, so take a look, learn, and then find the method that works best for you!

I think many of us, as we begin new homeschool years have these BIG plans, and we don't allow ourselves a lot of flexibility, or we are set in our ways and aren't willing to adjust things to better serve the needs of our family. These mistakes, and a few other things I want to share, can make our kids HATE homeschooling. I am sharing what I have learned about how we can get our kids to hate homeschooling in this episode. Moms, I don’t know about you, but I want my kids to look back on homeschooling with a smile on their face. I remember the day I first decided I definitely wanted to give homeschooling a shot. I just KNEW we would have so much fun homeschooling. I had everything ready. I checked out every book I could on homeschooling, and what I couldn’t find at the library I bought. Homeschool catalogs and magazines were being delivered to my home on a regular basis.
I was going to do this homeschool thing! And, I was going to rock it! I felt like an expert going into my first day. Only to be met with tears. And frustrations. And hard days with NO support.
Yea, I didn’t rock homeschooling my first year 🙂 But, that’s okay. What I wish I would have done though is have SOMEONE who sat alongside me and asked me a few important questions. I think that would have made my first few years easier, and that is what I want to do with you today.

I share this because when the guest I have today on the podcast emailed me and asked me to review her new literature-based curriculum, which at the time was just for preschoolers and kindergartners, I checked it out and was SO encouraged by it. When I first began homeschooling I wanted simple. I wanted to read books and cuddle my kids and have this environment that encouraged a love of learning.
But, instead, I pushed, and I bought a bunch of textbooks. I stressed myself out over test scores and public school standards. I didn’t really LOVE homeschooling. And my kids didn’t either. And they were young. SO young. My son has had a different learning environment because I know better now. And, Moms, if you are having regrets in your homeschool journey can I encourage you today? You can STOP the path yours on. You can turn around and restart. There is no time like the present. And guess what? The world will NOT end. It will keep going, and with it may come a more joyful homeschool journey.

As I began to prep for this episode, I honestly wasn’t really sure what I wanted to talk about. It’s my typical start of summer, end of the school year podcast but with everything else going on I didn’t really know how I wanted to end the school year. Last summer my daughter, heard about a camp called Worldview Academy while listening with me to the Heidi St. John podcast. She and I both immediately felt that this camp would be perfect for her and she begin working in various capacities to pay for her tuition. That camp changed her life. I do not say that lightly. I dropped off a teenage girl and picked up a young lady who was even stronger in her faith than she was before.

Today’s episode is with Connie Albers and we are talking about emotional overwhelm from mom and kids. I was listening to a podcast episode from Connie that she did with Sherri Seligson and she was talking about moms and them feeling sorry for themselves, and just being overwhelmed with everything going on. And, I cried listening to it because I had legit just had a HUGE pity party. I had been grumpy and just ugh. Not a nice person to be around. So, I asked Connie if she would come onto the podcast and give me a counseling session. Thankfully, she agreed!! Here are a few things we talk about:
- We are living in unprecedented times. As we are recording this we are facing times of uncertainty. How can we as moms maintain the joy in our homes in a time of fear and unknown?
- Our kids tend to take from us, day after day. The questions, the energy, the needs. All. Day. Long. And now, more than ever many of us are overwhelmed. Our field trips, our co-ops, camps, all of the “breaks” we tended to get from our kids have been canceled. How can we give ourselves some peace so we can maintain our sanity?
- I have been a little bit guilty of feeling like I need a pity party. I have felt the disappointment in my kids, and have been disappointed and feeling lonely myself. What can you say to the mom who feels alone right now? Separated from her community physically?
- How can we help our teens? Who have missed out on so many things that they were looking forward to, like proms, and camps, graduation, and getting their permit or license?

Is anyone else having a hard time getting school done, and many of us may be wondering if we’ve done enough in the midst of chaos. We may be trying to push through despite the feelings and the emotions we are all feeling.
This older episode goes along great with the topic of whether or not we are doing enough. So, I wanted to reshare it with an update from me, because it is relevant to what we are all dealing with today.
In our home right now, the kids are a little bit more agitated with each other. They are agitated with me. I'm more agitated with them. I think that's because we're not getting any other outside social interaction. We're social distancing from everybody else. However, we are not social distancing from our family, and we are with them all the time. This means that we need to give ourselves grace and give ourselves a break.
Because the truth is we are doing enough. Too often times we worry about being too relaxed in our homeschool. We worry about “keeping up” or letting the kids “fall behind” and in doing so we don’t actually stop and enjoy our kids.
The bottom line of this episode? YOU are enough. YOU are doing enough and YOUR children are learning EXACTLY what they need to know.

Who else feels like they have been living in a scientific thriller? MAN, guys, things are CRAAZY. I never thought I would be approached by public school teachers and asked to help them and others homeschool in the midst of a crisis.
However, I truly believe that God is doing something big in the homeschool community. Literally just about every child in the United States is learning at home right now. Who would have ever thought this would happen? But, it has, and it is an opportunity that we may never get again. I have been approached by so many moms who are LOVING this. They are LOVING having their kids at home, and are interested in homeschooling long term now. There are other moms of course who are overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.
This is why I was so happy to accept an invitation from Sam Sorbo to talk about homeschooling and a new resource that is being offered for free to parents in the midst of this pandemic.
Sam and I are chatting today about how we can support those families who are now homeschooling, we talk about the benefits of homeschooling and how our prayer is that this whole mess brings about a homeschool revolution.

Lynna shares her advice and also answers these questions on sibling struggles. * How do you handle sibling disagreements during the day? * How can we as parents help in these close quarter situations? * How can we as parents nurture our relationship with our kids while homeschooling? It is hard playing both roles sometimes.

Today I am airing a bucket list podcast interview with the authors of our favorite book series!!! I first began reading the Christian Heroes Then and Now series from Geoff and Janet Benge with my kids because my firstborn was feeling led into missions. She came across their book on Amy Carmichael and the rest was history. We have now read TONS of them. Last year we focused on world history and read missionary stories from the different continents we were studying with c0-op and this year, we are paring them with our US history study and going along with what the kids are learning with Notgrass History. We LOVE these books, and I was so excited to chat with Janet Benge for the podcast.

Leah Nieman is known as the technology guru, and I am so excited to bring her on to talk about teens and cell phones. I’ll be honest, I always planned on waiting until my kids were older to give them cell phones, but both ended up with one around 12 due to the fact that they spent so much time away from us for youth group, sports, and other activities. So, I caved.
Now, we have had some issues off and on since, as I am sure you can imagine. So, I was ready to learn from Leah about all things teens and cell phones.
Here is a small snippet into our conversation on teens and cell phones: * Let’s start with age, about what age would you recommend a cell phone for a child, and are there phones out there that aren’t “smart” * Now, let’s move on to social media, what social media apps are all the rage for teens, and which ones are the safest, and those that are not so safe? * What do you do when you see your child breaking rules that you put in place? How do you know when to lessen the rules and when to rein them? * What do you do when you see a child who is obviously becoming addicted to their phone?

One of the most popular podcasts ever is the one on Homeschooling a child with ADHD. Because of this, I wanted to share another blog post that I wrote a few years ago about homeschooling the distracted child. Three years later, this is still something we struggle with. Even after the kids are in middle and high school.
A distracted child is a common occurrence in many homeschool families. When left undealt with it means long homeschool days, a frustrated homeschool mom, and a child who is constantly unable to focus.

As parents sometimes we have to face reality. And one area I had to overcome when it comes to homeschooling my distracted child is the reality that my expectations were too high. The truth is when we are parenting a distracted child we have to be realistic. Here is our reality:

- Sometimes together isn’t better
- Realize you can’t set it and forget it

Have you noticed that the work ethic in many children nowadays leaves much to be desired? I have! And, I want to raise kids who are different. I want to have kids who want to work, and serve, and glorify God in ALL that they do.
And today, I am chatting this topic and so much more with Mark Baker, owner of Christian Homeschool Entrepreneurs.
Mark holds a Master’s degree in International Business Management and is a serial web entrepreneur. He loves creative thinking. And is currently working on a clothing brand called Married is Great (marriedisgreat.com) in addition to Christian Homeschool Entrepreneurship. He and his wife homeschool seven wonderful children and are devoted followers of Christ.

I did an episode on burnout back on episode 41. But, I wanted to bring the topic up again with my friend Davonne Parks. Through the years I have had SO many people tell me they can’t homeschool because they can’t afford to quit working. But, the reality is SO many moms work and homeschool. Some things my friends do, they work outside the home as an office manager, nurse, professor at the local college, cleaning houses or office buildings, a realtor. They work from home working with VIP KID, Usborne books, blogger, podcaster, VA, graphic designer, writer, editor, and so many more.
I am surprised by the number of moms who DO work and homeschool. The number has really gone up over the last few years. And we are going to tackle this topic on the podcast today.
I don’t regret being a working homeschool mom. I love it. My kids see me work every day, and they know how hard I work to balance my time effectively. They have seen me persevere and reach goals, they have cheered with me when I sold my first eBook, and have listened to me read articles, and blog posts. They also helped me hang business signs and read books to the babies when I ran my in-home daycare. They have come along with me to speaking events, work trips, and more. My businesses have really been family businesses that they have believed in with me.
So, if you are a working mom, I hope this episode encourages you and provides you with more tips to help you have a more joyful homeschool.

One of the biggest things I hear when I talk about homeschooling with other Christian parents is that their kids go to school to be the salt and the light. I have heard that our local public school would be a better place if I let my kids go there because they could be a light in a dark place. Both make me want to vomit.
Because it's not my child's job to be the salt and the light. The other day we were doing our daily bible study and we came across the verse where Jesus was choosing His disciples and he said to them, "Come and Follow Me" (Matthew 4:19). Recently, my teenage daughter, had a friend tell her that she was glad she wasn't homeschooled because she was able to witness to kids at school. The same week she was discussing ministering to young kids at a bible camp she is working at this summer in a leadership training. She was told at that meeting that she was not going to be as equipped to answer some questions from kids because she hadn't "experienced" things because she was homeschooled.
I found this verse to be the perfect time to explain to my CHILD that it is not their job to be the salt and the light.

I chatted with Sarita Holzmann a few months ago about literature and encouraging our kids to have a love for good books. While we chatted we started to get on the topic of missions. This is a HUGE topic in our home as my oldest is feeling led to the mission field. I wanted to have Sarita back on the podcast just to chat about this topic. I am SO excited about this interview because it is with the first guest, I believe, who is no longer homeschooling. I feel like she brings a unique perspective to this podcast and feel that she has a story to tell that many of us can learn from.
Sarah Mae is the author of the book, The Complicated Heart: Loving Even When it Hurts, a story for all the broken-hearted daughters who need to know if their little-girl hearts could ever heal.
She is the host of The Complicated Heart podcast, she speaks all over the country encouraging women to walk in freedom, and she wrangles three extroverted kids, a naughty yellow lab, and new husky puppy, because obviously she loves chaos. Holding down the fort with her in Lancaster, PA is her woodworker husband, Jesse.
Before we move forward, I want to say that this is not a medical advice show. We are not doctors. So, that is just a disclaimer. If you suffer from anxiety or depression please do as Sarah suggests and see a Christian counselor. Also, I think we can all learn a lot from how Sarah’s community rallied around her when she decided to put her kids in public school. It was a reminder to me, to give grace. We don’t know the battles others are fighting. Instead of passing judgment, we should be examples of the love of Christ. I know many times in the homeschool community when people we look up to stop homeschooling, we second guess ourselves or judge them for “giving in”. Neither of these is appropriate responses, and neither shows the love of Christ. We need to follow HIS call on our life, and we need to be the hands and feet of Jesus to ALL people regardless of their educational choices. I love how Sarah continually points us all back to the Lord in all that we do. This episode is sure to leave you feeling more joyful and ready to overcome the struggles you are facing.

I think the transition from Christmas break back into school is harder sometimes than the transition back after a summer break. It seems like we just want to hibernate for the winter right?! Well, one way you can get back into the groove of things is by doing some fun tech activities with your kids! Today’s guest can help you do just that. I am chatting with Monica Burns. She recently sent me a book of hers titled 40 ways to Inject creativity into the classroom, and when I first received it the title kind of stood out to me because hey we are not IN a classroom right? But, as I looked it over I realized there were so many fun ideas that I could incorporate into my homeschool and co-op classes. In this episode, today, Monica and I chat technology, why creativity is SO important, what apps and resources we can use for our special needs students (which floored me by the way, I had NO idea some of these existed) and so much more.

Today’s episode is going to be about anger, and patience and homeschooling, and I want to warn you all in advance that this is a vulnerable episode for me. I am going to be real, and honest, and hopefully by doing that I can encourage you all that you are not alone. Because, while I was on this unglued journey, I felt very alone. And judged. And it was hard.
Moms, we will make mistakes. We all have our weak moments. Mine may be becoming unglued, yours may be something else. What is important is how we handle those mistakes.
I don’t want crazy mommy days. I don’t want my children to remember mommy blowing up in anger. I want them to remember a joyful mommy who can control her emotions. I can sit and dwell on the days that I mess up, or I can choose to find a way to take those moments and learn from them. For me, these moments are a time of imperfect progress. A time to remember how far I have come, and that I still have work to do.

So, we have been homeschooling now for 10 years. 10! About this time 10 years ago Alyson had her last day of public school preschool. She left school and has never gone back.
In that 10 years our homeschool has changed a LOT, and today I want to talk about some of our favorite homeschool memories, some of our worst, and I want to let you all have a peek into what my kids really think of homeschooling.

One question I get a lot from moms is how to deal with homeschool criticism. This is particularly hard when their family is against homeschooling. I have some experience with this and am sharing my heart today about how to deal when your family is against homeschooling. And, how sometimes, even though we want things to change, the family never comes on board with homeschooling. This was a difficult episode to record, but one that needs to be discussed. Today we are chatting with Leah Courtney about the pros and cons of homeschooling.
Leah Courtney is a child of God, wife, mother, and homeschooling mama. She’s homeschooled four children since birth, and is now the mother of two homeschool graduates. In her (very rare) free time, Leah loves to read and color complicated pictures while listening to audio books. You can find her blogging at As We Walk Along the Road where she’s posting literature-based homeschooling resources and encouragement for other homeschooling mamas.
Leah talks with me about a time in her life when the local Montessori school looked like a better option than what she could offer her two younger kids. She felt overwhelmed at the idea of juggling multiple grades and thought there was a better option right down the road.

My daughter has some special needs that have not been diagnosed but are apparent. I’m listening to your podcast on friendships and would love a podcast on children that have “needs “and friendships... theirs and ours as moms. Even in the same homeschool community and church family. Would you do a podcast on special needs children being left out AND the family being left out... how to handles the isolation when we are the biggest cheerleaders for our children. What do we do when we are looked at as weird or strange
So, this question brought tears to my eyes, and I didn’t want to answer it alone, so I actually brought a friend on to help me answer it. Davonne Parks and I are chatting special needs, difficult friendships and so much more in this episode.
Raising children with special needs comes with challenges. It comes with hurt. It comes with the huge weight of knowing that the world is going to be harder for your children. It comes with the understanding that not everyone will “get” your kids. It comes with the reality that many will tell you how you should or shouldn’t approach these special needs. It comes with the realization that your child may never have that friend who truly gets them and loves them for who they are. It comes with challenges.
We are tackling Dawn's question and these as well:
- How can homeschool communities reach out and encourage special needs families?
- In regards to friendships, we can’t make our kids be friends with other kids. But, how can we teach our kids to be inclusive and supportive of those different from them?
- How do you handle conflict amongst friends in small homeschool communities? Those where the kids are going to continue seeing each other but just don’t get along?
- What do you do when you flat out have a mean girl situation and you can see that your child is being left out intentionally?
- How can we encourage our kids to be set apart like God calls us to be?

In today’s episode, I am chatting teenagers and their transition to adulthood with Dachelle McVey. Teens can be rough. VERY rough. And I feel we lack mentors in how to parent teens. Many people are ready to give advice when it comes to babies, toddlers, and even young school-agers.
But teens? No one wants to go there. And I think it is because we don’t feel very confident in how we are parenting our teenagers. They mess up. We mess up. And we all wonder whether or not we are doing things the right way.
And we just don’t talk about it. But, today, we are changing that. Dachelle gets real, she gets raw, she shares her mistakes, her failures, what she did right, and what she would do differently.
Dachelle is a working homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. She is the owner of HideTheChocolate.com, a blog about her adventures in homeschooling and parenting. She is also the author of dozens of online book clubs for kids from preschool to high school at her site Literary Adventures for Kids. As I recorded I was a few weeks into our school year. Chances are you all are a few months in by now. And, how many days have you missed already due to over-scheduled days, or unplanned circumstances? How many times does something in your day distract you or your kids and lead you all away from school? I guarantee you it has happened to every single person listening to this episode at least once. Guarantee it!
I decided to take a look before this episode at our homeschool group event calendar. And, in the first three months of school, there are 15 events scheduled. FIFTEEN. They are all good things. Co-op classes, a picnic, kayaking day, a field trip to the zoo, a field trip to Cosi, a local theatre performance, a field trip to a farm and the fire department, plus other events as well.
All great things. But, also disruptions to our school schedule. There are also other things. The everyday distractions.
We are tackling how to overcome these distractions and be more consistent in homeschooling. You can do this! Believe me!

As many of you know, my grandmother passed away last August She and I were VERY close, and the morning that she passed away was actually the same morning that I had the results of my MRI and the doctor told me that he thought I had cancer. The kick-off to last years Back to School was anything but joyful for me. Instead, it was a time of grief. A time of unknown and just an overall HARD season.

I've seen the photos of huge curriculum piles. The homeschool rooms that make me think mine is less adequate. I dream of being able to take my kids anywhere they want to go for a field trip. And all these things make me lose sight of the big picture.
They zap my joy, steal my energy, and make me want more. Without realizing what I already have.
You see, it's not about the material possessions. It's not about what we have to use in our homeschools. The best gift we can give our kids? The answer may surprise you!

The reason I wanted to do this series was because in my own life I have had seasons of overwhelm. Seasons where I thought it may be better to put the kids in public school. I remember years ago when we had the WORST first day of school ever. Since then bad days have come and gone, but how we overcome them have remained the same. Having a bad day of school doesn't mean the homeschool year will be a failure, choose joy moms and things will get better!

Today’s topic is going to be all about how friendships change between homeschool moms and public school moms. Once you’ve begun homeschooling many of us are so excited to start this journey and can’t wait to share it with your friends…. But, those friends who are NOT homeschooling, they aren’t that excited to hear about all the curriculum options out there. The weekly lunch dates you used to have aren’t happening as often now that your kids are home with you. Those midday phone calls and text chats aren’t quite the same when teaching interferes with your ability to answer…
I dealt with all of this when we first began homeschooling. I struggled with it a lot and wondered how in the world I could maintain my friendships with your public school friends while homeschooling?
Through the last, nearly a decade I have been homeschooling I have found there are three ways to maintain school choice and friendship, and all three require participation from BOTH parties, so if you have public school friends and this episode resonates with you, please share this with your public school friends as well.
The key to making friendships work when one family chooses a public school and another chooses homeschool lies in one word. CHOICE. You have to choose to respect a friend’s educational choice. You have to choose to make an effort to maintain a friendship. You have to choose to bite your tongue sometimes instead of making rude comments. You have to choose to remember that regardless of the educational choice you have one common bond and that is a deep love for your children. You have to choose to be a friend. In doing this you will be blessed to have a friendship that surpasses what some may expect.

Last year, I was at our homeschool co-op chatting with a few moms about high school, when a mom who was fairly new to homeschooling. Spoke up and said,
“I hope one day I am as confident as you are about homeschooling”
I laughed because I do NOT feel confident. Even as a seasoned homeschool mom, I still find myself questioning my decisions and wondering if I am doing the right thing.
It’s hard.
Really hard.
Homeschooling is NOT easy, and even though I am more confident now than I used to be, I am not as confident as I’d like to be.
However, I know that many of you are dealing with zero confidence, so, I wanted to share with you all a few ways you can gain confidence in your ability as a homeschool mom.
Want to be more confident as a homeschool mom? Own your decision, embrace your role, and don’t let others tell you it’s not good enough! Find something to do for YOU. God gives us dreams, and we don’t have to sit on them. Get up and get moving. Find something that makes you feel good about yourself, and do it! These things will help you with your confidence as a mom, which in turn will make you better equipped to embrace your role every day.

Today we are chatting with Davis Carman the President of Apologia Educational Ministries. Apologia is the #1 publisher of creation-based science and Bible curricula with over 70 #1 awards. He believes in homeschooling, believes in defending the Christian Faith, and believe that every subject (and I mean every subject) should be taught from a biblical worldview. I met Davis a few years ago at a homeschool blogger conference called 2:1. I mention that briefly in the podcast episode. I wanted to chat with Davis about biblical worldview and Christian curriculum because I have had a major mind shift on this topic since I first began homeschooling. When we first began homeschooling I never considered whether or not a curriculum (outside of science) should be “Christian”. In my mind, the only thing that would maybe not line up with God’s word would be the whole creation/evolution debate. But then, the longer I began homeschooling, the more I began to realize how much God had been taken out of everything I learned as a child, and I began to appreciate how important a biblical worldview is.

One of the biggest struggles homeschool parents have is over curriculum choices. Think about it, every spring you see catalogs upon catalogs of curriculum come through your mailbox. There are homeschool conventions and curriculum fairs every weekend across the United States. Through the years, I have used a variety of different curriculum. I have honestly been dreading recording this episode because it involves me acknowledging failure as a parent. No one likes admitting they failed right? But alas, we are here.
Relationships and homeschooling. It is a common fear that parents have before they begin homeschooling, and a topic that has been mentioned over and over again on the podcast.
Relationships matter.
Relationships trump academics
Homeschooling is all about relationships.
Yet, I didn’t truly get it. I mean I nodded my head, agreed with the people speaking, but wasn’t truly living it out in my own home.
I told you this episode was real.
Homeschooling bloggers oftentimes show the highlight reel. NOT all the jazz that goes on behind the scenes. I try to be real I really do. But, still, I don’t share all the bad stuff because I want to also honor my kid's privacy.
But guys. Things have NOT always been good in our home this past year. We have had some major heart issues with one of my kids.
But, the reality is I can’t place the blame on her. I need to take the blame myself.

After all of these years of homeschooling, I am still learning things. Homeschooling has taught me so much, and I am so grateful for it. I think we start of homeschooling thinking we are going to teach our kids, but in reality, I think sometimes God calls us to homeschool so He can teach us a thing or two. And those homeschool lessons aren’t always easy. I am sharing three important lessons I have learned from homeschooling. I am chatting patience, prayer time, comparison and so much more.
One take away I hope you each get from this episode is that we have to give ourselves graces as mommas. We will make mistakes. But, we learn from those, just like our kids do. Homeschooling is sanctifying. It really is. And God so often times uses it to mold and shape us just as much as our kids. Be aware of these lessons he may be trying to teach you. Be open to them, and remember that homeschooling is all about life lessons, for the whole family.

Carrie asks,
“I’m about to start my daughter in kindergarten this year. Homeschool has always been the plan since before she was conceived and here we finally are. Problem is she wants to go to school. My heart is torn, I’m not sure what to do”
Another similar question dealt with this only in high school, Mona says,
My daughters cousin is always telling my daughter to "come to public school because she misses out on all the "good stuff" like prom and graduation" I dont mind them comparing, but their conversations usually end up with my daughter and I arguing over public school and I become the world's worst parent and she hates me.
Oh, dear momma, these are both hard questions. And at some point in our homeschool journey, most of us will deal with homeschool kids who want to go to school.
So, let’s take a look at what we can do when the situation arises.

After spending years teaching in a traditional classroom, Jamie Erickson returned home to not only teach her own live-in circus of five but also to encourage and equip a growing tribe of homeschooling moms on her blog, The Unlikely Homeschool. Her first book, Homeschool Bravely, releases with Moody Publishers this year.
Jamie shares with us how she overcame mommy guilt and embraced the birth order of her kids as God ordained. We also chatted about how little we truly knew before we began homeschooling. One big thing Jamie advocates for in this episode is self-care for the homeschool mom, and how too often times we allow ourselves to get too busy because we consider it a badge of honor. Maintaining our sanity as we homeschool is so important.
I also love the reminder Jamie gives us to embrace the differences each of our kids and the difference in education they get from their mom through the years. We can pick and choose what we can do with our kids, and remember that education is not a lather, rinse and repeat. What a great reminder when we are homeschooling multiple kids!

They want to love homeschooling, but as soon as they are happy in their methods they think they are missing something. They want to step out and trust the Lord on the BIG things He is calling them to, but fear stops them in their tracks.
But, what if instead of allowing fear to grip us, we remind ourselves of what the bible says?
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. ~2 Timothy 1:7 Because you see, FEAR does not own us. And, this episode is ALL about conquering those homeschool mom fears.

Too often times we worry about being too relaxed in our homeschool. We worry about “keeping up” or letting the kids “fall behind” and in doing so we don’t actually stop and enjoy our kids.
