Technically, we only have 6570 days until our child turns 18.
How we spend those days is crucial to building a strong foundation so that our kids are best equipped to becoming fully fledged adults.
No pressure!
In this episode I chat with Nellie Harden where we discuss how best to ‘flip the coin’ and use the days that we have left more effectively.
It doesn’t have to be hard work and nose to the grindstone - in fact, it’s better if it’s not.
Nellie explains how keeping it real, and removing the power struggles is the best way to build better connection with your teen - so that together you can make the best use of the time you have left, before they ‘fly the nest’ for good.

We were brought up at a different time. The world has changed - and as a result, many parents struggle to help guide their child through the myriad of decisions they are expected to make in order to find their way onto the “correct career path.”
These decisions are expected to be made earlier and earlier - which causes so much heartache. What if I told you that there are no wrong decisions?!
In this episode Oie and I discuss her 4 stage model where she addresses :
a ) Values
b ) Natural Talents
c ) Interests
d ) Work Preferences
Her model will facilitate this journey and ease the burden from such young shoulders whilst having to make these big choices.

More about Oie Dobier :
Oie based her education and career on all the wrong things. She chose a path that others expected of her which led to changing her major, jumping from job to job, and finding herself always looking for the next big challenge. Then in her early 40’s, she was passed over for a promotion which caused her to do some self-reflection. Although the pay was good, she realized she was tired, bored and unfulfilled. She had chosen a career that didn't align with her values, passions or natural talents and felt it was time to be more purposeful with her life. What if there was a way to teach young people how to figure this out earlier? A way to help them start their career in something fulfilling, interesting and enjoyable? What if she could save them from the years of struggle and unfulfillment that she and so many others have experienced? As a result, Project Who Am I was born and she’s been helping young people learn about themselves and apply this knowledge to their educational and career pursuits.

We berate our teens for being addicted to their screens. We complain that our kids are unable to sit still or get their homework done.
And yet, I believe that they are a product of the environment that we have created for them.
We can’t just blame smartphones here.
How we eat and our relationship with food has also conjured up the belief that time is of the essence and that we need to take life on the run. We are now a world of processed meals, TV dinners and drive-thru “dining” - allowing us to nourish our bodies - whilst we are doing something else “more important”.
How bonkers is that?
In this episode I discuss how we have ALL fallen into the trap of immediacy - and that it’s not our children’s fault.

I’m not one for this “New Year - New You” nonsense … it puts us under so much pressure to do better and achieve more.
But what I do advocate is grabbing the learnings from the life that we live - and from that determining whether we continue as we are doing, or change our direction (if only a little bit).
As parents we need to lead by example - and show our kids that (when they grow up) life is still fun and worthwhile and to be lived to it’s fullest.
I offer some 25 pointers (give or take) that will help

10 Pointers to Create a Happier Home
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” - And yet I am seeing more young people than ever looking for for support.
Many kids are finishing school for the holidays, relieved that there is some sort of respite from the chaos in their minds ( and lives ).
On the flip side, many students are returning home for Christmas exhausted and emotionally rung out.
How can parents try to create a happier home for their kids and bring back the cheer and frivolity that Christmas ought to guarantee.
To be honest - it’s not really about tinsel and gift laden stockings … its about going back to basics.

Self Harm amongst young children has doubled in the last 6 years.
This makes for unsettling reading for any parent.
For many, this topic can be terribly scary as they themselves have little first hand experience of self-harm; resulting in many parents approaching the topic of self-harm from a place of fear.
When a parent finds out that their child has been self-harming they do very often blame themselves. Experiencing feelings of : Confusion, Helplessness and Uncertainty.
It is understandable for parents to be alarmed as reports are quoting rising statistics and also linking self-harm with increased risks of suicide.
So understanding self harm, in my opinion, is key.
In this episode I discuss
What is Self Harm
Why your child might be self harming
The signs to look out for
What to avoid doing
Alternatives to self harm
Other ways to help

Face-to-face bullying is on the decrease which is great news … BUT cyberbullying is rife. The worse thing is that it is usually anonymous - which is doubly unsettling.
The bullying statistics are alarming.
A while back Guardian recently reported that more than half of children aged 11 to 16 have been bullied about the way they look, with 40% targeted at least once a week, research has found.
More than half (53%) of young people who experienced bullying based on their appearance said they had become anxious as a result and 29% had become depressed. One in 10 said they had had suicidal thoughts and 9% that they had self-harmed …
and the figures are still rising.
Many parents are able to understand “in-person” bullying, from their own experiences so they are better prepared to support their children who are under fire.
However, the goalposts have changed since we were youngsters and thanks to the advancement in technology the bullies can now hide behind their anonymity … enter the new phenomenon Cyber Bullying.

The world has changed. We are bringing up our children in a very different environment from that of our own childhood.
As a result, many parents are worried as to whether the advice and support that they are offering their child is in fact correct. How can they be sure they are saying the right things?
In this episode, I chat with Matt Douglas - a veteran educator - about the opportunities available to our children nowadays. We discuss how parents can better understand and communicate with their teens.
We address the common pressures that our teens are currently facing - and how parents can play a role in supporting them through these modern-day challenges; and the critical importance of mental health in the lives of our teens.

Anyone who is well versed in betrayal is likely to have experienced a seismic shift in not only how they start to see themselves - but also in their new vision of the world.
Perhaps you find it difficult to trust others again;
Maybe you shield yourself from entering into close relationships or
Possibly you struggle to trust yourself and your decisions.
Whatever your experience - it’s likely that left unprocessed and unaddressed, the betrayal is likely to still leave it’s mark, years or even decades later.
In this episode, I chat with Dr. Debi Silber about my own experiences and how - even though I thought I had worked through my own betrayal story - there are still issues that need to be addressed.
Dr Debi discusses Post Betrayal Syndrome and the necessary stages that we need to go through in order to ensure we are no longer jaundiced by the betrayals that might previously have haunted us.

This is a podcast first for me : chatting with two inspiring young ladies!
Many parents, when trying to monitor their child’s tech usage, do so from a place of fear. It’s not their fault, it’s just that they have not grown up in the digital age, so they are not really parenting from experience.
In this episode I am chatting to Kirsten & Aiyven Mbawa who have become published authors and also they run their own subscription box business; and they say that all of this would have been made much harder without technology.
We talk about technology, what it takes to juggle school work and all their other responsibilities & past times, and how they manage to achieve a healthy - but necessary reliance on technology.

More about Kirsten and Aiyven Mbawa :
Welcome! We are Kirsten and Aiyven of Mbawa Books. We live in Northampton with our parents, youngest sister Kaitlyn, pet cat Zaki and pet pigeon Gus.
It’s fair to say we are voracious readers or book addicts if you like with a bit of a thing for getting others to catch the reading bug☺.
Sagas of Anya by Kirsten & Land Of The Nurogons by Aiyven are our debut middle-grade novels.
Our books started life as entries to the 2019 BBC 500 Words writing contest. Even though we weren't successful, we turned our entries into middle-grade novels which are now on sale on Amazon & our website.
You may have watched our reviews of children, middle-grade or young adult books on YouTube, Facebook or Instagram.
Or you may have seen us on Channel 4, Steph's Packed Lunch, BBC Look East, Northampton Chronicle & Echo, Daily Express, Daily Mirror or even in The WeekJnr magazine.
Whichever way, we're sure by now, you get the idea that we are mad about books.
And that is why after having published our books, we decided to launch a book subscription box for kids 8-14 years old. The mission? The vision? To promote literacy and diversity in middle-grade literature. Happier Every Chapter, is the ideal book subscription box for tween or young teen bookworms!

This week ( November 1st - 7th 2021 ) is International Stress Awareness Week.
Somewhere along the line, we have learned to normalize the stresses that we are facing - and as a result, our minds and bodies are often running in a state of high alert.
In this episode, I discuss the different stresses that we are exposing ourselves to and why they can have a huge impact on us physically, mentally, or emotionally; as we end up compromising our health, our relationships, and our overall wellbeing.
COVID has been one of the notable stressors that we have ALL been experiencing for the best part of 18 months and now we are just beginning to witness the effects of this longer term stress.
I also offer coping strategies that will help you and your child address these issues quickly and safely..
PLUS a huge discount on one of my online courses.

This crazy old world can be very overwhelming sometimes - no matter what age you are; and I know from experience that we need to take care of our health (mentally and physically).
It’s too easy to forget about ourselves - whilst we continue to spin plates and react to the chaos around us. However, when we do neglect our own needs - then the cracks start to show.
In this episode, I am chatting with Sam Bernice - who is founder of The Children’s Yoga Foundation. I quickly learn that yoga is not just about sitting on a mat and testing your own flexibility. It is an entire wellbeing philosophy that will help parents and children alike, establish a better relationship with ourselves so that we can better cope with the challenges that we often face on a daily basis.

More about Samantha :
Hi – I’m Sam, founder of Sam B Yoga and The Children’s Yoga Foundation.
In my 20 years of teaching in schools and being a parent of three, I have noticed children developing more and more problems with their mental health. There is so much pressure put on teachers and parents to help with this, but many of us are struggling with our own mental health.
How can the practice of yoga help you or your child? Yoga is not just about the postures and getting on the mat. Following this science and philosophy offers us as parents deep contentment and wisdom that can be shared with our children.
Modeling self-care and well-being techniques continually guide and support our children. The practice of yoga, especially off the mat, aids our children in recognising and managing their emotions, instilling healthy habits and mastering their minds in a journey of self-discovery. So as parents, it all starts with us. Ask yourself, are you ok? How can you optimise your well-being, to be a better Mum/Dad/person?
A lovely place to start is trying out family yoga together. It will strengthen your connection and help you learn about it in a fun way. Try reading some books on yoga, try some postures and give some breathing techniques a go. If you need any help or guidance, I have many years of experience in making it exciting, appealing and accessible to our younger generation. Why not give it a go!

Many parents feel under so much pressure to ‘Keep up with the Joneses’.
Whether it’s the continuous cycle of after-school activities - ferrying kids from Cubs to Swimming to Piano … Or ensuring that the house is pristine and all the laundry is neatly stowed away - the need to manage these high expectations can be relentless.
In this episode, I chat with Mary Broddle who, through declining health is unable to maintain this idea of ‘perfection’ - and Mary is just fine with that, thank you very much!
We talk about how technology can be a necessary lifeline and why teaching your child to contribute to the running of the house through chores and responsibilities prepares them for independence a bit earlier...

More about Mary :
Bio – Engineer, Embroidery Entrepreneur & Disabled Mum
Mary is a disabled mum to two boys, aged 11 and 8. From having to ask her midwife for an OT referral, to isolating through the pandemic, her health has affected how she parents in a big way.
We all feel we should be providing our children with opportunities and experiences, but what if you can’t?
Mary says cut yourself some slack - being loved is the main thing they need to experience. As she has become increasingly disabled Mary has realised more and more the importance of the example she sets her sons.
Mary had a successful 20 year career in Rail Engineering. But her worsening health meant she reached a point where she had to accept she couldn’t keep going as she was and she left her job.
Whilst being Housebound, Embroidery has helped her cope with chronic illness and increasing disability; addressing the challenges, many of which are beyond her control.
And so - using this passion of hers Mary has set up her own Embroidery business (a far cry from the rail industry!) and she now shares her skills to help others find the enjoyment and mental health benefits it has afforded her.

As adults, we carry around with us many unresolved events and issues that, upon reflection, shape the way we behave as adults. Loss, betrayal, fear, trauma (to name but a few)… all take their turn in determining particular limiting beliefs and coloring our values.
Our perception of ourselves changes and we start living by the stories we create about ourselves. This is not always terribly helpful. Much of this boils down to the feelings of not being ‘good enough’ and self-judgment.
Last week I was at a retreat where I was given the opportunity to rewrite some of the stories I was holding about myself since childhood.
How brilliant it would have been if this emotional baggage was dealt with when I was younger.
How brilliant if we could teach our children how to deal with their emotions in a more healthy way.
We can!

I Am What I Am
Gloria Gayner
I am what I am
I don't want praise, I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle?
Why not try to see things from a different angle?
Your life is a sham till you can shout out
"I am what I am”
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn till you can shout out
"I am what I am”
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn till you can shout out
"I am what I am”
I am, I am good
I am, I am strong
I am, I am somebody
I am, I do belong
I am, I am good
I am, I am strong
I am, I am somebody
I am, I do belong
I am, I am useful
I am, I am true
I am, I am worthy
I am as good as you
I am, I am useful

A month into the school term - and many parents are telling me that things are getting harder rather than easier.
Are you a parents who’s child is struggling to get into school?
Are you worried that you are being too hard on your child? Or conversely, not hard enough?
It’s a tightrope that we walk - trying to make sure that our child gets a good education, and making sure they are offered the best chances in life. But what’s the point if they are miserable and not being able to learn when they actually get into school?

September is a time of year where we usually feel energised and motivated into kickstarting our lives after the summer. However, for many of us at the moment, this new found enthusiasm is being rather elusive.
Are you feeling the same?
This week I was going to pack it all in and retire!
In this episode, I talk about how it’s OK not to have our shit together and that this is perfectly normal not to have life all mapped out.
Maybe you are getting to grips with an empty nest or at loggerheads with your teen; or perhaps you feel stuck and feel trapped and that there’s no way out …
Truth Bomb : You do not have to make any big decisions right now. Oprah said “When you don’t know what to do - do nothing.”

When we are in the muck of parenting it can be very easy to lose ourselves and to lose sight of what’s really important.
We can, more often than not - get lost in old programming and stories that can shadow the way we parent.
Sivanne has a framework that helps us gain perspective and avoid the traps that so often hold us back from parenting to be best of our ability.
It’s based on 4 pillars and we discuss these in this episode :
Following Your Knowing
Filling Your Own Cup First
Relinquish the HOW
Celebrating “Enoughness”

World Suicide Prevention Day was 10th September 2021, so this episode is very timely.

Following the upheaval from the past academic year, there are many young people who are trying to come to terms with changed plans.
Some changes have been thrust upon them, but also following a year of ‘isolation’ many have had the time to readjust, so their changes are self-imposed.
Perhaps they are not going to their university of choice - or maybe they wish to opt for a different career.
For the younger age group, many primary school kids are not able to attend the secondary school that they had expected to, or they need to reassess their subject choices.
Whatever the situation, when our children’s lives take a deviation from that which was expected, we often take it personally as parents and try and fix stuff.
Whilst it’s good to guide our kids - perhaps the better course of action is to support them with their own decisions.
In this episode - Stephanie explains how best to do just that.

There are so many parents worried about their child’s mental health.
Just this week, I have been contacted by parents looking for support surrounding :
Lack of confidence
Eating Disorders
Self Harm
Back to School Anxiety
Anger Management
Conflict and Arguments at home
Panic Attacks
This is our kids we are talking about. The problem is that the resources are stretched and many parents are unable to seek the support they are looking for.
Whilst there are private practitioners out there, like myself, many parents do not have the finances to go down this route.
So in this episode, in the absence of seeking external support from third parties, I am discussing what parents can do to support their children’s mental health challenges.

Parents are being encouraged more and more to talk to their children about how they are feeling. But for many of us, this is quite hard as it’s not something that comes naturally to us.
The thing is that we have to model the behavior that we wish to see - so first of all we have to be comfortable with what we are feeling as parents - before we can understand what our kids are going through.
In this episode, I talk with Joanne about how negative emotions are just as important to acknowledge as positive feelings AND how exactly we can tune into what we are feeling.
We will be using the acronym R.U.L.E.R :
✔️ Recognise
✔️ Understand
✔️ Label
✔️ Express
✔️ Regulate
This is a great reminder - and we can teach our kids this handy tip as well.

When couples separate, understandably this gives way for resentment and bitterness. Many people feel unheard and slighted in some way, and as a result, families are left fractured and at loggerheads with one another.
Tony has had firsthand experience of this, yet he soon learned that there was an alternative.
Separation and/or divorce does not have to lead to constant arguments and frequent battles in court.
Tony explains that by taking responsibility and sometimes pressing the ‘pause’ button, co-parenting doesn’t have to be such a struggle.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

For many parents, having to prepare meals for their families day-in-day-out, soon takes the enjoyment out of cooking.
Preparing food for our kids becomes a chore - and this builds resentment on all sides!
Couple this with the fact that we still want to offer our kids healthy food - it can be soul-destroying when they either refuse the meals that we provide (in favor of fast food alternatives) or smother the whole plate in ketchup - or in our family, sriracha sauce!!
In this episode Julie explains how eating a lower sugar diet has literally revolutionized her family’s lives.
And she also offers some practical advice that we can all implement now - so that those mealtime battles become a thing of the past!

More about Julie :
Julie Krummenacher is a Pharmacist, Chef, and a Mother of twins, and she is passionate about empowering moms to help their family become healthier.
Julie always thought she was healthy, and was often praised for her healthy lifestyle—she was a vegetarian for many years, she exercised, and she was not overweight. But when she tried to get pregnant, she found out that she had a form of infertility related to diabetes—from eating too much sugar!
Foods that she thought were healthy actually had TONS of sugar hiding in them. She changed her diet and with the help of fertility treatments, was able to have twins! She did not want her kids’ health to limit them from achieving their dreams, and she soon realized that if she wanted her kids to eat healthy, it needed to taste good!
Julie went to culinary school when her kids were young and combined that experience with her background in research to craft healthy recipes that are bursting with flavor.
Julie shares her recipes, healthy cooking tips, and how to involve kids so that moms can take control of their family’s health by making meals EASIER, HEALTHIER, and TASTE AMAZING!

Our kids have been going through so much over the past 18 months, and we are seeing an increase in their stress levels. Not only that - we are seeing an increase in the numbers of children struggling with anxiety and OCD.
Interestingly, Dr. Roseann says that in many instances, our children are being misdiagnosed with anxiety - where in actual fact they might be struggling with OCD.
In this episode - she explains the differences and once we know what’s going on - how parents can better support their children.
These behaviors are learned and reassuringly they can also be ‘unlearned’ with a few simple techniques.

For many of us - we have spent so much time sitting in our “zoom uniform” or lounging about in our sweats that we have forgotten how we should dress for real life. For others, we want to make some changes to how we used to look - as this no longer represents how we want to look and feel today.
In this episode, Tessa and I discuss the importance of feeling good and being in the zone and how our appearance can help us find that inner confidence - be it having a great haircut, or (for me) freshly manicured nails - or indeed putting on an England Jersey or even The Queen’s Colours!
Tessa’s Mum ( who herself was an Olympic Skier ) said :
“If you don’t have a dream - then you can’t have a dream come true.”
So we talk about how we can encourage ourselves and our children to allow our dreams to come alive - and to dream BIG, and a lot of that stems from our own perception of ourselves and being true to who lies within.

More about Tessa :

Tessa’s clients are mostly Mums who would love to feel and look the way they used to, who are juggling work and family life are realising that virtual meetings are not quite the same as in-person meet-ups!
Most people, whatever age, find it hard to buy clothes that flatter, fit and give us the confidence that we are looking for; so Tessa takes the stress out of wondering what to buy, what to wear and how to create different looks without breaking the bank.

As parents, there is so much going on for us as we navigate family life.
The teenage brain is a constant ‘work-in-progress’ - so we often need to adapt to the changes quickly, freely, and with PATIENCE. Patience for our children and also patience for ourselves.
In their bid for independence, sometimes our children are not too receptive to their parent’s “interfering” and tend to pull away. Malva addresses this by explaining the importance of PROXIMITY and how this can build stronger relationships between parents and children.
She also goes on to discuss the merits for parents to become more TEACHABLE and to be open-minded enough to learn from our children. Speaking from experience, this truly helps to enrich the parent/child relationship.

As Mums, we very often feel that we have given all that we have to offer to parent our children - and to an extent, we lose our confidence and (dare I say it ) our own identity.
In this episode, I am chatting to Dan Reader - who knows only too well the inner turmoil that us mums are facing and how hard it is to break away from that table of being “Just a Mum”.
Dan shares with us his insights as to how women can grasp the nettle and be brave enough ( if it’s bravery they are looking for ) to find that inner resolve to re-invent themselves; whilst still being the best parent that they can be.
Truth bomb : When you take care of yourself and relight that fire - you become that person who has more to offer for yourself and those around you - so it’s a win-win.

More about Dan :
From Personal trainer of 8 years to behaviour change and self love coach for the past 2.
Having gone through my own rock bottom 4 years ago which left me officially homeless in £15,000 worth of debt and using drink and drugs to escape my emotions I recognised something HAD to change!
That change was me turning inward and learning to love all the parts of myself that I’d judged and shamed instead of looking for validation outside of myself.
Over the last few years I’ve invested in coaches and therapy for my own healing and 2 years ago I invested in a program to become a coach myself.
Lockdown and covid gave me the opportunity to close my personal training studio, sell all my equipment and move across the country with my girlfriend and really get clear on what it was I wanted to create in the world.
Self-love was what saved me and now my mission is helping others start giving themselves the love they crave first, so they never settle for any less than they deserve in relationships, health, and life.

A quote I love : “To grow yourself - You must know yourself”
Nowadays, there’s a lot of talk about personal development and understanding what makes us tick. But if I am brutally honest - sometimes this process can make us feel a bit uncomfortable. We don’t always like what we start to uncover … BUT when we start understanding ourselves better - we are more able to work out what our best next steps are.
In this episode, I discuss with Hayley the importance of being honest with ourselves and accepting who we are (warts and all).
She goes on to discuss how filling our Emotional Vessel with happy & productive feelings & thoughts, best equips us to deal with the challenges and expectations that everyday life throws at us. There are no ‘one-size fits all’ … and the real secret is listening to your own inner voice.

Many of my 1-2-1 young clients are unhappy because they feel that their future is not clear. For teenagers, this is a big deal. They are trying to work out where they fit in and where they are heading. For those who do not have a clear-cut view of their future, this uncertainty can be very destabilizing.
For many parents, this translates this to their kids lacking motivation and direction, which frustrates and scares them.
In this episode - Clare and I discuss the importance of allowing our children to take the lead!
You’ve heard the adage - “If you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life”.
Once our kids know where they are heading - and they are fired up about it - then they will be able to identify the inspired actions they need to follow their dreams.

I read in the papers this weekend that experts were saying that
“The challenges presented by the pandemic are so complex and wide-ranging, they cannot be solved by health and social care professionals alone,” he said.
There is only so much doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists and other healthcare professionals can do to support the estimated 10 million people needing mental health support as a direct consequence of Covid-19.”
To be brutally honest - we need to help ourselves and support one another.
As parents - we need to support or kids and give them the coping strategies that they need to navigate these uncharted waters.

When we talk about creating new habits, many of us think about setting unrealistic goals (or new year resolutions) which, invariably result in failure.
We set such high expectations and then beat ourselves up when we don’t manage to follow through.
But in this episode - Sandra helps us recognize that Habits are just a different way of thinking.
Sandra explains that once we understand our own behavior better, we can create a M.A.P. for our own success, by creating steps for our ‘new’ behavior’s success :
M : Motivation
A : Ability
P : Prompt
We also discuss the difference between Meditation and Mindfulness, and by just being aware of our thoughts means that we don’t have to chase that allusive ZEN moment.
Sandra explains that Habit forming is as easy as A.B.C.

As our children are growing up, we often enlist the support of Piano Teachers and Swimming Teachers … experts who can teach our children the new skills that they need.
So why are parents reluctant to reach out to a Life Coach when they feel that their kids are struggling? More to the point - why aren’t they looking for the experts to help their child BEFORE they are struggling?
We want the best for our kids right?
So what’s stopping parents from asking for the help that their children need? Life is tricky enough sometimes; especially when parents feel slightly out of their depth and are struggling themselves.
In this episode, Amanda and I talk about coaching kids / young adults; and how with a few gentle tweaks the changes can be huge.
We give parents an understanding about what to expect from a coach - and that it’s not a failure on their part to look outside the family for support. After all - parents weren’t taught these techniques at school.
And to be honest - most teenagers aren’t really receptive to their parent’s well-meaning advice in the first place!
So Grab a cuppa - and keep listening!

Teaching your child financial literacy is one of the best life skills you can teach your child.
For some parents, money matters are not what springs to mind when they think of how best to support their children.
However, Laura Weston believes that having a healthy credit rating is even more important than the big milestones we tend to associate with growing up - like moving into your first home.
Our kids are no longer expected to have a ‘job for life. Conversely, they are now being encouraged to have a career portfolio - and a variety of income streams.
We are talking about how best to equip our children for more financially stable adult life.
In this episode, we discuss what parents can do to educate themselves and their children in understanding how to make your money work for you.

Machandria Peters is no stranger to receiving derogatory comments based on her appearance alone. She has experienced discrimination which she firmly believes is solely due to the fact that she is differently-abled.
That said, Machandria has not let that stand in her way and she strives to spread her message; which is to encourage differently-abled people to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams.
In this episode, Machandria shares her experiences and encourages all of us to say no to the negativity being directed towards us. She chooses to drown out those comments designed to hold her back, be they comments from within or without … and she encourages us to do the same.

More about Machandria Peters :
Machandria has been destined to do great things from the start, she began this path of greatness by sliding out of the womb two months early. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. She never allowed the diagnosis to deter her from achieving anything she desired.
In 2011, she graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Development and Family Studies and a minor in Spanish. She has defied odds and accomplished goals that many thought would be impossible.
She is a Cerebral Palsy Warrior who recognizes that there is a limited representation for individuals who are differently-abled; she is passionate about sharing her experiences to advocate and educate.

Do you have a favorite child? (Ooh! That’s a scary question, isn’t it?)
Maybe you might sometimes feel that you don’t even like your child?
How can you say you are a good parent if you even entertain these feelings, if only for a second or two?
Even before you can address these ‘terrible thoughts you push them away into the depth of your being - hoping that they will never resurface; leaving yourself racked with the Mum guilt.
In this episode, Triinu explains how she has bonded with one child better than the other - and the impact this has had on all their relationships.
We discuss the ‘Mum Guilt’ - and how the first step to happier family life is forgiving yourself.

More about Triinu :
Triinu is a happiness coach from Estonia.
She’s a mom for two amazing young boys who have given her two such different experiences of motherhood.
Her coaching journey is mostly influenced by her postpartum depression and how it has affected her whole life and her relationships. Her declining mental health as a young mum led to break-ups, alienation from friends, feelings of depression, feeling unloved and guilty for not "loving" her son the "right way".
“Now I am so eager to help women, moms especially to change their perspective on mom guilt and being a mom in general.
I believe there's no such thing as a bad mom. Every mom is special and every mom needs to be valued for her efforts.
Most importantly - There's no such thing as failure, there are only lessons. You choose your attitude towards them.”

As parents in this game of life, we are pretty much able to work out those behaviors & actions that work well for us and those that do not! We have the benefit of life experience - and many of us have learned our lessons through trial and error - ‘the hard way.

“Nonbinary kids are not broken by default. They are not an issue to overcome, fix or ‘deal with. Given the right environment, there is no reason they can’t thrive like anyone else.”
The most common issues trans+ people face are lack of acceptance and lack of understanding. By educating ourselves we have the power to make our interactions more considerate and empathic.
Our kids need the space to grow and be comfortable with their own choices and it is our responsibility as their parents to hold that space.
It is also super important that we do not put the responsibility onto our children to educate us and put us at ease.
In this episode, Harris explains what trans+ and nonbinary mean.
Harris also suggests 3 questions that you might ask your nonbinary child - to open up the conversation :
What name and pronouns should I use for you?
How public or private do you want this information to be?
What support do you already have and can I offer support in any way?
~~~~~
More about Harris Hill :
Mx. Harris Eddie Hill (they/them or ey/em pronouns)
Harris is a 30-something-year-old nonbinary person from Hertfordshire, UK.
Harris realized they were trans/nonbinary in their mid-twenties and have since made the commitment to becoming the advocate they needed, but never had.
To date, Harris has taught and coached over 30,000 people in their mission to educate the general population about gender identity. An entrepreneur and seasoned LGBTQ+ advocate, Harris is dedicated to making every story as familiar to us as our own.
Why Gender Identity?
Homelessness, suicide, and poor mental health affect the trans and nonbinary community at a disproportionate rate, and Harris is dedicated to improving those odds.
The biggest reason that trans and nonbinary people are at such a high risk of poor wellbeing is because of cultural transphobia, which looks like a lack of acceptance, lack of acknowledgment, exclusion, and a high occurrence of hate crimes and discrimination.
We can all help to change that problem collectively by becoming more educated and actively working together to make sure our homes, schools, and places of work are passionately inclusive of our community. Beyond that, we also need to think about the structural changes that need to take place within our societies for equality to be possible.
It’s hard to determine whether your child’s ‘erratic behavior’ equates to a sensory processing issue or whether it’s just plain old acting out.
Either way - trying to ascertain what’s driving these behaviors can be really hard for parents to navigate.
In this episode I talk with Dana about how she dealt with - not only the challenges that her daughter was facing - but also how she learned, as a parent, to offer the right support her daughter needed.
Dana discusses the importance of trusting your intuition as a parent - as you know your child best - and you can read through the tantrums (or the silences) and see beneath the behaviors.
Whilst the teen years are indeed a challenge - negotiating these times with either ADHD or Anxiety (or indeed both) compounds the struggles that have to be addressed.
We discuss some of the things to watch out for - though indeed every child is different - and some of the coping strategies that will make life a little bit easier to deal with.
When you are a struggling and worn out parent, you are often thrown the well-meaning advice.
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
“You’re a Mum and you’re doing a great job. You need some me-time.”
But when you are a lone parent - there is no opportunity for me-time; it’s just not an option. The cavalry just isn’t coming.
In this episode, I talk with Janis Isaman about her lone parenting journey. How in the early days, she “selfishly” had to put her needs above her son’s - just so that she could keep her own head above water.
We talk about the difference between being a single parent and a lone parent. And whilst one is not better than the other … there are indeed differences.
Being the captain of the ship means that you have to walk to the beat of your own drum - and Janis is OK with that.
Lone parents (and single parents out there) I salute you.
Janis Isaman, the founder of My Body Couture, helps people feel better in their bodies. Like most business owners today, she sees clients online and in-person, and her specialty is helping people rid themselves of pain.
As parents, we tend to react to our child’s behavior. Sometimes an overreaction is nothing to do with the child in front of us - but more about what’s going on deep within us.
In this episode, Nicola and I discuss the importance of standing back and giving ourselves some space.
We talk about understanding what is ‘triggering’ our responses - and in fact, if there is a better way of processing our (often) highly charged emotions. Because, when we do - we are offering our children the opportunity to take our lead and learn to do the same.
As women, we have been bought up to suppress our emotions and to put our needs at the bottom go the pile.
By acknowledging our own emotional needs, we are able to unearth what’s beneath. This teaches us how to nurture the relationship that we have with ourselves and those close to us.
How magical is that?
So let’s “face the fear - and do it anyway.”
For any parent - having a child with mental health issues can be a struggle. If you have not experienced mental health challenges yourself - then you just cannot fully relate to what is going on.
I know that sometimes I find this difficult. That’s not to say that you cannot try to understand and help.
In this episode, I talk with Jack - my son - about his own personal experiences - in the hope that we can shine a light on what it feels like to live with the constant presence of mental health problems hanging over you.
We aim to get under the bonnet of Mental Health … looking out from the inside.
We offer parents the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what their child might be experiencing. But also for those struggling - to let you know that you are not alone.
Are you struggling? Parenting can be so hard, right?
Our lives are so stressful and chaotic. There’s so much to juggle.
Maybe the only “fun” that you seem to get is the chilled glass of sauvignon at the end of the day? Or are you a gin aficionado?
The thing is booze is not the “answer to all your problems”. That in itself is an oxymoron.
In this episode, Janey and I discuss the joys (and yes, I do mean JOYS) of ditching the booze.
This is not a preachy episode by any stretch of the imagination - but it shines a light on the life that you could enjoy without focusing on the next drink.
Janey discusses how you can successfully pave the way to upscale your sober life.
EP 49 - Heather Rutherford - Perfectionism : Healthy Standards -v- Unrealistic Expectations
Are you struggling with your teenagers and your beating yourself up about it?
“I’ve been parenting for years … Surely I should have got my parenting under control by now?”
Parenting doesn’t work like that - and yet we get tied up with the ‘mum guilt’ that we haven’t got it right after so long.
Perhaps you are listening to this episode during the lockdown. So many of us are struggling - and yet we set such high expectations of ourselves and those around us.
In this episode, we discuss how we might avoid the Pitfalls of Perfectionism.
TRUTH-BOMB : Perfection is Unachievable - and that’s OK.
Heather and I discuss how we can manage our expectations a little better.
~~~~~
More about Heather :
Heather set up The Parenting Partnership in 2016.
“I signed up for my first parenting course in 2006 when I realized that we needed support to manage our young son’s impulsive, physical and challenging behavior.
The tools and skills that I learned helped transform our young family. I saw, amongst many things, how vital it is to understand a child's temperament and behavior and to communicate more consistently, calmly, and positively.
Through the process, I've learned a lot about myself and these skills have been invaluable in helping me navigate my family through breast cancer and divorce.
I'm intrigued by the science behind parenting strategies and decided that I wanted to learn more and support and help other families. I completed my training with the fabulous team at the Parent Practice and became a licensed certified educator.
I am also a Care for the Family licensed facilitator and have recently joined the team at the school's advisory service, Talk Education, as their parenting consultant.

Many parents are concerned about their child’s escalating emotions - notably anger.
However, this does not always mean that their child is ‘angry’.
It’s like treading on eggshells the whole time - and often it feels like it’s the child who holds the balance of power.
In this episode, we discuss how parents can work towards less conflict in the home - and aim for better more successful interactions.
We talk about the importance of reaching a win-win situation with our teenagers - and what we can do to achieve this.
The secret is getting your child to collaborate - so that they will co-operate!
We discuss Ruth’s experiences as a Headteacher in an inner-city primary school - where she introduced a Philosophy for Children Programme - which encouraged the pupils to understand the power of their own minds.

Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you know that your child is struggling? But the thing is, often they don’t want to talk to you about it OR they cannot verbalize what’s going on in their head - because to be honest, they have no idea how to make sense of it themselves.
Well, Kay Reeve not only has an answer but more importantly, she offers the tools that you and your child need in order to become more familiar with and manage their emotions.
It’s called The “Mood Mentor” Model.
We are often looking for the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. But if you don’t know how that tunnel is laid out or indeed how long it is - then this offers very little reassurance.
I believe that the Mood Mentor Model is the blueprint for finding that light, faster and allows you both to move forward with more confidence.
The “Mood Mentor” Model is a method that Kay uses to teach emotional intelligence. A way to understand your emotions better. The system is based on the use of color to understand emotions.
A picture of the “Mind Mentor” Model that we discussed in this episode is shown in the thumbnail of this podcast.

So many children are battling to control their BIG emotions, and I am seeing so many parents struggling to help them. Many of those parents lucky enough to avail of the support services, are saying what is offered is not sufficient; and yet many families are not being offered support at all.
Kids are often labeled as badly behaved, where in actual fact the underlying reasons for this behavior are not being unearthed by the professionals.
In this episode, I talk with Avril about her experience of “the system”, and how this battle with her daughter’s school and the authorities, which lasted many years, ended in a judicial review in favor of her fight for seeking recognition of her daughter’s challenges.
I hope that our discussion serves as a beacon of hope for many parents who are trying to seek the support that their child so desperately needs.
We also discuss Avril’s role as an Ollie COach where she now supports families with similar issues.
All About Avril
Avril is married with four grown-up children and a grandson who is 5.
She worked as a Mental Health Nurse, but due to family commitments she became a “stay at home” mum and is now an “Ollie Coach”.
Her youngest child, who is now 18, was very unhappy and extremely anxious from her first day at Primary School. She had many periods of refusing to attend school and had numerous suspensions for “bad behavior”.
Avril made the decision to home school her to protect her mental health.
Despite many requests for assessment and support, it was not until her daughter was 12 that a specialized assessment was carried out by a team from England. Her daughter received a diagnosis of “Asperger’s with Demand Avoidance, in which she is extreme”.
Avril’s knowledge and experience as a Mental Health Nurse and as a mum to a child with additional needs attracted her to the Ollie Concept. She said, “It grasped me immediately as its core beliefs really resonated with me, especially “all behavior serves a purpose” and “there are no bad children”. It was exactly the type of therapy model that could have supported my daughter with her emotions and mental health, her siblings and us as a family.”
Avril qualified as the first Ollie Coach in Northern Ireland / Ireland in May 2019.

General Information about Ollie Coaching
The Ollie and His Super Powers Concept is about helping children, young people, and adults understand why we feel what we feel. The Super Powers are our emotions or feelings.
At the heart of the Ollie, Concept is a passion for building the resilience and wellbeing of children and young people. Using a strengths-based approach, Ollie Coaching empowers children and young people to understand, manage and control their emotions rather than being controlled by them, it enables them to use the strengths and abilities that already exist inside them. They get to be in charge of their Super Powers, learning how to make an emotion bigger or smaller as needed.
Ollie Coaches don’t fix problems or tell you what you have to do. They empower you to problem solve for yourself and support you to find what you already have to inside you, helping you to be the best version of yourself that you can be.
Ollie Coaching can offer support with anxiety, anger, fears and phobias, “challenging behaviors” and for issues around confidence and self-esteem, to name a few.

For many of us, Christmas is going to be a smaller affair this year. This might come as a relief for many of you … perhaps you now have the excuse to avoid certain toxic people in your circle.
But for others, this might pose a problem … because you are now going to be in closer proximity with someone you’ve done your level best in avoiding.
In this episode, I identify the 12 Toxic Characters and their behaviors that might cause you problems.
Better still I am offering suggestions on how to deal with these people and how to diffuse certain situations.
Toxic individuals can bring out the worst in us - but also they can have an adverse effect on our wellbeing and mental health - and that’s not OK.

2020 hasn’t been much fun, has it?
So now Christmas is almost here, it’s understandable that we want to crack open a bottle or two and let our hair down.
BUT - how do we address the issues of alcohol with our teenagers, without sounding like a nag - or worse still a hypocrite?
In this episode, I discuss the importance of having open conversations with our kids - sooner rather than later.
Of course, our children need to understand the challenges that drinking too much involves - but when we are in conversation with our kids - it helps to :

This is a topic close to my heart.
Many teen girls I speak with are struggling with unkindness from their peers - from their friends. Funnily enough, they don’t call it bullying - and yet that’s exactly what it is.
Bullying is all about exerting control over someone and making them feel crap.
In this episode, I explain why we have this unkindness - especially amongst teen girls - and what we can do about it.
I was bullied as a child - and as an adult. In ALL instances - the bullies were my friends - they were the ‘Mean Girls’.
I also know first hand what it’s like when your daughter is also being bullied.
So you see, I get it.
And I want to help you understand the mechanics of the Queen Bee’s Clique and how you can rise above her unkindness and her control and break free of this manipulation.

In this episode we are talking about the developmental stages that our children go through on their path towards adulthood; and why the teenage years can often be so turbulent.
Invariably when we are dealing with teenagers we find ourselves being ‘triggered’ by their behavior - and Jacci explains why this is more to do with the parent rather than the child!
Jacci discusses - what she calls - “Middle of the Road Parenting” and why it’s necessary to not expect too much from ourselves or our children.

Jacci is a psychotherapist and coach who specializes in helping families, parents, and individuals better understand how their thoughts impact their reality. She has over 30 years of experience in working with children and families, her career started as a nursery nurse working in both mainstream and EBD schools.

Jacci offers support through her Parent-Plus page on Facebook as well as having a podcast all-around mental health called Living Life Being Human.
Jacci is a mum of three, her eldest son is now 33, her daughter is 31 and her youngest is 16, she also has an amazing boisterous two and a half-year-old grandson who teaches her something new every day.

In this episode, we are talking about how many parents are struggling with the changes we are seeing in our children’s education.
Whilst there is still a “preferred path” proposed by our education system … more and more parents are finding that this model might not be best supporting their child’s temperaments, interests, and needs.
Is the educations system fit for purpose?
And if not - how can our parents support our children better?
We talk about modeling the “right” behavior - because let’s face it - our kids learn through observation rather than being preached at! And we discuss the importance of values and helping our kids understand what makes them tick.

How do parents guide their children through the technology minefield?
We know the pitfalls after all! Whilst our kids (who have grown up with technology,) cannot recognize the problems involved.
Andrea is all about using technology for Creating - Communicating & Connecting rather than just Consuming.
I discuss with Andrea whether parents are “entitled” to police their children’s tech use.
We discuss the importance of frank and open conversations with our kids.
There is so much to discuss:
Pornography
Cyber Bullying
Social Media
Video Games
Time Management
Andrea suggests creating a Family Tech Plan - based on the open discussions that you have already had with your children.
We talk about how we can differentiate the use of constructive and destructive screen use (Education -v- mindless scrolling)

What a year 2020 has been already!
Our children have so much to navigate at the minute, that it can be really daunting for parents to learn how to relinquish control.
It’s our responsibility to guide our children through all the challenges and obstacles that they are facing.
If you can relate to this, you’ll love this episode with Tia Fagan, who encourages us beautifully to parent from a place of curiosity rather than fear.
When we learn to let go and parent from the heart - it somehow takes the pressure away from us parents to be perfect and frees our children also from having to measure up all the time - it can be truly liberating.
Tia explains that when we release control and open up space for our children to learn, they begin to trust their own inner guidance. Our children are then better equipped to navigate the challenges they face, safe in the knowledge that they will weather their storms -with is by their sides.

Tia Fagan is a Certified Conscious Parent Coach, certified with Dr. Shefali Tsabary in the Conscious Parenting MethodTM and with the Jai Institute for Parenting.
As a mother of twin daughters, now in college, she has experienced each developmental stage of parenting children. Tia's passion is helping parents strengthen relationships, increase connection, and improve communication within their family.
Tia helps parents understand why their child is behaving the way they are and how-to guide, connect, and support them to create thriving relationships.
Tia has a gift for showing up without judgment and guiding with support and compassion.

Throughout this episode, I came from a place of learning - and Elena kindly fielded my clunky questions with kindness and compassion.
We dived right in, discussing the dangers of conversion therapy (there is a 57% suicide rate with this treatment); and how this comes from wanting the ‘best for our kids’ whilst parenting from fear.
75% of women (yes - us Mums) have had a negative experience in sexuality and as a result, we are parenting from a place of deep protection and trauma.
“When fear leads the show, that's when we make decisions that are regrettable.”
LGBTQ is the only marginalized communities who are not born into families who are of the same marginalized communities. The parents do not ‘get it’ and as a result need to be intentional in getting a greater understanding.
Elena suggests how parents might field these conversations; and how with greater understanding and knowledge - we will be best serving ourselves and future generations by parenting and grand-parenting better in the future.

2020 has been an incredible year - and for many ( it is late October at the time of recording ) it is beginning to take its toll.
We are heading into a winter of uncertainty and this is creating a huge amount of stress for many families. So how can parents parent from such a place of unreliability and confusion?
In this solo episode I discuss what parents can do :
Ditch the Guilt
Practice Self Care - which involved Self-Compassion and Setting Boundaries
Being more Deliberate and Intentional
Because, when the stress levels rise - so must the levels of support.

How many times a day are our brains bombarded with negativity and rubbish? It affects our behavior and mood.
My guest on this episode calls these intrusions, “brain hacks”; and Doreen has recently certified as an Unhackable Coach!
In this episode, we discuss the importance for us parents to be aware of what we are being exposed to and how, by monitoring these brain hacks, we can adopt a less reactionary approach to parenting. In turn, this awareness helps us to calmly guide our children through the myriad of daily challenges that they face throughout the adolescent years.
We talk about how our kids can take ownership of their feelings and their thoughts - thus equipping them with the emotional resilience to become more responsible in their decision making. All that, and a smattering of neuroscience, this action-packed episode will help you ‘walk the talk’ and become that shining example for your children!!
BIO: Doreen Steenland, Certified Professional Christian Life Coach:
“I empower Christian Moms to launch emotionally competent world-changers who love well. My goal is for parents to become unhackable Moms who empower unhackable teens.
The Moms I work with empower their teens to block unauthorized access (brain hack) to their thoughts and emotions! They raise teens that know what they believe, who are comfortable in their skin, and have amazing social skills that will impact influence, and lead others so they can change the world! I believe growing the next generation in emotional intelligence will be the key to making lasting changes worldwide.”
Doreen lives in the United States with her husband Richard and is the owner of Living Full Life Coaching. She’s Mom to three amazing young adults, one who has launched at 23 and she truly gets that parenting is messy! When she is not coaching parents, she is golf, walking, biking, or hiking!

There is a great deal of uncertainty in the world at the minute; and our kids are bearing the brunt of this. They have been away from school for many months - and now they are entering an environment that should feel familiar - and yet it’s not; because the education system has been given a bit of an overhaul because of COVID.
Taking it one step further, our students are struggling to adjust to university & college life that doesn’t even compare to that of last year.
In this episode, we are discussing how our teenagers are adjusting - and how we can support them through this process.
JoBeth suggests trying thoughts on for size.
It’s important to acknowledge that we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future - and we need to be OK with that. To accept that outside circumstances aren’t going to make us happy and she encourages us to find joy - through a more positive mindset.
It’s not necessarily the big things - it’s the little things that bring us joy … a soft blanket and the first drink of coffee in the morning.
It’s so important for parents to watch our words. We need to give them thoughts that serve them better.

In this episode we are talking about some of the difficulties our children are experiencing whilst transitioning back to school/university after a prolonged period away from education due to the Coronavirus.
We talk about how we can help our children to redefine what education means to them - and rebuilding expectations; because things are changing so rapidly at the minute.
We also talk about the importance of LEARNING rather than education just being the grades that can be achieved at school & universities. Tertiary education is not necessarily a path that suits every child - and that’s OK. There are other options available - and equally important.

"Our children come through us, not for us, but for the lessons they reflect to us, during their journey, in an effort to grow us up along the way."
When we were young we were told that children should be seen and not heard. Now - as parents ourselves, we are told that our children’s needs are paramount. Somewhere along the line we have missed out! We are often told to trust our gut, our intuition. But how can we trust it (or even hear it) if we have not yet discovered who we truly are ourselves? Through having years of putting other’s needs first, and not having a voice, many of us struggle to follow our own instincts; and yet Kim and I are in agreement that it is on our instinct that we must rely as parents - because we know our family’s needs the best.
In this episode Kim and I explore the importance of hearing that inner voice and sometimes, relinquishing control. As parents, it’s scary to drop the reins - but by allowing our children to lead the way in their own lives, we set ourselves up for more connection and less confrontation.
Whilst listening to our own heart we must teach our children to do the same; and with that comes the likelihood of things not always going according to plan - and that’s totally OK!

In this episode, I am speaking with Simon Benn: The Children’s Happiness Expert.
Simon helps Parents to Inspire Their Children to be Confident, Resilient & Happy Through Fun!
“I empower parents to inspire their children to be confident, resilient & happy with a fun process that's already helped 1,600 8 to 11-year-olds.”
Simon’s expertly imparts his wisdom through metaphors - which I believe, really helps us to remember the message - long after we first heard it! Hear how we can ditch the Parental Guilt by understanding that we are all Perfect Diamonds and that focusing on the external stuff will only keep us stuck in the rut of ‘not being a good enough parent’.
By understanding that “It’s all about the YET-ness” helps parents, not only to forgive themselves for their imperfections and but to realize that every feeling is a choice.
I was a mostly happy child apart from some bullying for my buck teeth and at scout camp where an older boy made my life hell.
I started my career in the family business after leaving university in 1989.
I worked in educational publishing creating classroom materials to help children learn and be safe.
One of our largest projects was 5 million copies of Roald Dahl’s Guide To Railway Safety to stop children playing on railway lines and endangering their lives.
We also created safety posters and maths materials for Thames Water, literacy materials for Reuters, and a club for young people interested in conservation for WWF.
I took over the business in 1995 when my parents retired.
The business became my life and its performance decided my mood.
I worried about failing and even when success came it felt hollow and empty.
So I got into personal development, learned LOTS, and eventually decided to sell my business and become a coach.
I started working with kids in 2013 and found my true vocation – inspiring kids to be happy and empowering their parents to do that.

Parenting can be exciting and overwhelming in equal measure.
Dealing with your big emotions can be quite a struggle sometimes - especially if you aren’t quite sure what’s going on in your head and your body. Throw family life into the mix and some situations can sometimes become less easy to manage.
In the episode, I talk with Aparna Venkataraman about how sensory self-care can really help us get in touch with our emotions - and she offers suggestions on how to deal with that. Aparna explains the effectiveness of breathwork and meditation in the simplest of terms - so that even the beginner will leave this episode with calming techniques that will help parents reconnect with themselves and their families.
Having 15 years of experience connecting with families in schools, children's hospitals and non-profit organizations such as United Way, Boys & Girls Club, and her local child advocacy center, Aparna Venkataraman is the founder of Beauty In Parenting and is a parent coach, meditation teacher, motivational speaker and global wellness advocate for DoTerra Essential Oils.
With her approachable nature, strong intuition, and problem-solving skills, she guides parents of babies, toddlers, and teens to empower themselves and build healthy relationships with one another through joyful self-care, effective communication, confidence-building, and lighthearted mindfulness techniques.
She is a proud member of NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and values authenticity, a kind nature, motivation, love, compassion, gratitude, and humor as key components of a beautiful life.

If you are a parent of a TEEN or TWEEN - then you will be no stranger to arguments in the home - I’m afraid to say that it’s a rite of passage!
But my guest on this episode, Parent Coach Claire Cetti, has developed a 5 step process that helps parents to move from Conflict & Anger to Calm & Connection within the family.
We talk about her CARES System.
C : CATCH IT! : Stop what you are doing and acknowledge what’s happening right now.
A : ASSESS : what’s going on - for you and your child. Look at the bigger picture.
R : REMEMBER the Relationship : It’s not always about winning the argument.
E : ENGAGE : Open up the conversation with your child.
S : SEEK a Resolution : This is about co-operation and collaboration … helping you both come out with a solution that works for everyone.
This is GOLD!

If we aren’t careful, we get wrapped up in the chaos of family life - taking our eyes off the bigger ‘prize’, notably the wellbeing of our family.
Whilst it is all too easy to get caught up in the chaos of school runs, the chauffeuring from practices & competitions and the myriad of other ‘responsibilities’ that family life can throw at us … we can indeed be distracted by these trivialities rather than focus on the bigger picture.
In this episode, I talk with Becca Cornford about just that. Her family was hit by a ‘curve-ball’, not once but THREE times. Here she discusses how she and her family found the time to thrive and properly connect.
And through all this, she started a business; which helped both her and her family to find some levity in an already serious situation.
Becca is a Mum of three kids - all riding the waves of the teenage years.

We all know the importance of talking more with our kids - and how getting them to open up can not only help their mental health - but also start building stronger relationships within the family.
But it can be really hard to know what to say for the best, or even where to start.
“Change comes from the parents,” says Piers.
Here he shows us how to break the habitual cycles of communication (or lack of it) that often keep us stuck in our relationships
This episode is jam-packed with practical tools to help parents open up conversations with even the most reluctant teenager.
Piers details a number of exercises :
Perfect Affirmation : Helping kids to concentrate on what they want. How to switch perspective from negative thinking to something more positive.
The Round Room : Helping us to release the emotions, so that we don’t need to carry grudges into our conversations.
3 Chairs : Helping us to understand a situation - from a different perspective.Often leading to more sympathetic connections. (It’s not all about us!)
The Letter Technique : Releasing the feelings and the pent up emotions - giving us the freedom to move forward again.

Our childhood experiences stem from the old Parenting Paradigm - that one of “Children should be seen and not heard.” Much has shifted since then.
Natalie says “Kids’ temperaments are more robust now and this often makes parents quite uncomfortable.”
We have never been taught how to parent – so on the back of that - how can we ensure that our kids flourish? Natalie says that unconditional love is the answer.

The teenage years are a real struggle for many. Parents and children alike.
In the previous episode, I wrote a letter to “A Struggling Parent” - so, it’s only fair I write a letter to “A Struggling Teenager.” If you are parent listing to this - invite you to share this episode with your child. It might help them understand what’s going on in their heads.
Dear Struggling Teen,
It's not just you
I want you to know this
And I also want you to know that what you are feeling is temporary. That speaks to good feelings as well as bad feelings. But it's all just temporary.
Our mental health is like a bright blue sky. Every so often clouds come along.
They could be the white fluffy ones that aren't too bad – that gently float away without too much effort.
Sometimes we get the grey clouds that might bring along some wind or rain. They stay for a bit longer – but still, they move on after a little while.
And then there are the black clouds or sometimes a total coverage – that totally obliterates the blue sky behind. But rest assured, that the blue sky is still there – waiting to reveal itself again. It might just take a bit of time.
Thing is with being a teenager – everyone tells you about hormones and how your body changes.
Bits get bigger
Your voice changes
Hairs start sprouting
But not many people talk about how your mind is affected
And for some kids – it just becomes a hot mess.
One lad said that it's like a five-lane motorway going on in his head – but all the cars are going in different directions.
Another child said “It feels like having a brain full of porridge - I just can't think straight"
And if you don't know what to expect – it's bloody scary
So here's the sciences-bit.
During childhood, the brain develops at an alarming rate – and by the time you approach puberty, the brain has the power of a supercomputer – or even like the Internet.
But here's the problem – the software that is currently installed in your brain is still going through its upgrades.
It's only really got the power of a microwave.
Impressive enough – but not as sophisticated as it needs to be. As I said – it's still upgrading.
But all this takes time – and it's totally worth it.
So be patient, please.
I need you to be kind to yourself.
I need you to treat yourself with compassion and some understanding (a bit like when your Gran is learning to use text for the first time – there is a learning curve).
It takes a huge amount of brainpower and energy to make these adjustments – and it is – to be fair – bloody knackering!
This is why you get angry quicker
This is why you say random things without thinking
This is why you need your sleep
This is why you mess up
You are not lazy. It's biology.
Your mind and body are doing exactly what they are designed to do.
You see – as your brain is developing and trying to get its shit together - the amygdala – which is the bit in charge of your safety and well-being – it's often set to “ON” for too long.
That's why your anxiety levels are often heightened.
The amygdala was programmed to help us (when we were cavemen) to look out for danger – like the sabretooth tiger. It is programmed to keep us safe.
Sometimes, whilst our brains are going through such a massive transformation, it gets its knickers in a twist – and the amygdala is “ON” all the time.
Again this is exhausting.
Anxiety is exhausting.
And it is important to find ways to teach your brain that there are in fact no sabretooth tigers around at the minute!
Right, up until now, I've been talking about emotions because that's the first bit in your brain to develop.
The last bit of the brain to develop is the front bit – they call it the pre-frontal cortex.
That's the bit that's in charge of :
Decision-making & rational thinking
Focus & concentration
And all the bits about understanding consequences.
So whilst your pre-frontal cortex is upgrading – it's going to be messy.
So like I said:
Your body is doing one thing and your mind is playing catch up.
Now before you get ahead of yourself and think that this gives you a "get out of jail free card" it doesn't!
Life doesn't work like that.
But by understanding all this, it will help you cope with the mess going on in your head.
Now, I always say there is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
So when you mess up – learn from it.
When things go wrong – understand why – and do things differently next time.
That's how we improve.
That's how our brains rewire properly to help us in the future
So you don't get a carte blanche for bad behavior – but what you do get is a bit more understanding whilst you are going through this whole process.
And How do I get this understanding from others, Cai?
Well, it is by talking
I know! I know! Sometimes that's really hard - But believe me, you will need it - it’s important.
You see - if your mum or dad doesn't know what's going on in your head how can they help?
If your colleagues, mates, teachers don't know if you are struggling – how do they know to adapt?
They are not mind readers!
Those adults in your life have all been through this process. Some will have struggled more than others.
But what I do know is that it won't have been plain sailing for anyone.
So you see - we get it.
You see I get it.
I was you
I see you: trying to be accepted by the “in crowd” – but deep down knowing in your heart that you’re secretly not like them.
I see you: holed up in your room, clueless of how to tackle the mountain of studies – yet knowing if you stop – your grades will suffer.
I see you: unsure of where you fit in in the world – whilst having no idea where your life is heading.
I see you: sleeping around, just so you can block out the emptiness and the need to feel loved.
I see you: sitting in fear of judgment and scared you will make a fool of yourself – again.
I see you: trying to control your eating, as your mind is full of confusion and dislike at the image you see in the mirror.
I see you: being so insecure that you'd rather be drunk, loud, and annoying – rather than transparent enough to let the mask down and let people see the real you.
Terrified you’ll stand out.
Terrified you'll be invisible.
Terrified of being judged.
And that you are in fact seriously messed up.
You see I get it.
Wondering if it is safe to listen to the whisper in the back of your mind – saying that you are indeed “enough".
But what the heck does that mean anyway?
Enough means that even though you make the inevitable screw ups – it will be okay.
But the thing is, that's how we all feel.
Deep down we all have these insecurities.
Some of us hide it better than others.
Some of us no longer listen to those negative mutterings in our head.
Tucking the thoughts away – safely out of sight out of mind.
But that my friend is how anxieties start.
That's how insecurities snowball into what they call ‘mental health issues’
I invite you to stand tall and say “Sod it!”
And to embrace the delightful messiness of you!
As Dr. Seuss “Why spend your whole life trying to fit in - when you were born to stand out?”
You might be wired differently.
Embrace it.
You might love differently.
Embrace it.
You might feel differently.
Embrace it.
You might think differently.
Embrace it.
You are doing the best you can and that’s bloody brilliant.
Maya Angelou said :
"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."
God made you for a reason and whilst I am not a religious person - I know that each and every one of us is here with a purpose. And to fulfill that purpose we need to be different.
A goalie has a different job to do as the center half.
An artist has a different purpose for the guitar player.
The coder is achieving different objectives for the FX trader.
The zoologist is seeking different answers to the cancer research scientist.
Catch my drift?
Everyone’s purpose is different - but this world needs us all. And you, are a part of this beautiful messed up world of ours.
And I invite you to step into your spotlight and take your part.
We are waiting to welcome you.
So what is the answer?
How do I do all this Cai?
First – you need to open up the conversations
In your head and then with others
But here's the secret – when we look at those uncomfortable feelings they become less scary.
They drift away – like those rain clouds in an otherwise bright blue sky.
And what's left is the realization that everything will, in fact, Be okay.
So with that in mind -
Find someone who will listen.
Find someone to help.
And if you can't find that someone just yet – book a call with me :

EP 19 - Dear Parent of a Struggling Child
They do say : “You are only as happy as your saddest child”
When your child is struggling, as their parent, it can occupy your every waking thought.
I get it.
I was that Mum.
So, I have written you a letter.
Dear Parent of a Struggling Child,
It’s hard isn’t it?
Watching your “baby” struggle.
It’s hard isn’t it?
Seeing your once, happy go lucky child, morph into a confused and anxious teenager; lashing out at any of your efforts to look after them.
I know that you too struggle, bewildered and unsure of what to do for the best.
It’s hard isn’t it?
All you want to do is wrap them up in your arms and protect them from ‘the big wide world’ – and yet they resist any of your attempts to bring them close.
Parenting a teenager is hard – It’s damn hard.
“But Mum! You just don’t get it!”
As their parents, we feel that it is our responsibility to keep them happy and safe – we are supposed to have the answers – and yet we continue to feel powerless in this fast-paced world. A world of school league tables, cyber-bullying, gun & knife crime, climate change, and gender fluidity…
Much of this is alien to us – and it is hard to keep up.
So you see – I get it.
I was You.
I see You: Tiptoeing around the house – treading on eggshells trying desperately not to upset the temporary peace that has finally settled.
I see You: Looking at your daughter as she slopes out of the door - hoping she won’t be treated as cruelly today by her mean-girl “friends”.
I see You: Driving around the block again - clutching at the conversation - as your son slowly opens up to you.
I see You: Witnessing their anxieties - terrified that if it gets too bad they might think of doing something stupid.
I see You: Worrying perhaps, that they think you don’t love them because all you seem to be saying is NO.
I see You: Sneaking into your daughter’s room - hoping that late-night hot chocolate will alleviate her anxieties as she struggles with the mountain of schoolwork she is tackling.
I see You: Deflecting the verbal abuse as you try and reassure your son that you want to understand his struggles - all the while watching him withdraw further and further into his own tormented mind.
I see You: As your child collapses into the car, appearing to have the weight of the world on their shoulders? And all you can think of to say is “How was your day?” Desperate for connection, desperate for confirmation that this time, today was perhaps a good day.
I see You: Lying in bed in the wee small hours - beating yourself up that another attempt at support was misconstrued, ending with shouting and tears.
“Mum! You just don’t get me!”
I see You: Collapse in a heap at the kitchen table wondering where on earth you went wrong - and how on earth you can drag you and your family out of this mess; desperate for the laughter and calm to return to the home again.
You see, I understand your fake smiles when someone asks you how you are; pretending that everything is perfectly fine. The alternative would be confessing that you feel you are letting your child down. You and your child are both struggling, but what’s even more upsetting is that you are suffering separately. Alone.
I know that feeling of despondency when you look into the mirror and catch a glimpse of the truth behind your own eyes.
Every day there is sadness and hopelessness. You see that your child is in anguish - but it feels like there is fuck all you can do about it.
And then there’s the guilt - oh my goodness - the GUILT. Because you have absolutely no idea how to mend your fractured family.
How can you share these feelings with anyone else?
Speaking your fears and worries out loud would be admitting that you cannot cope and that things are out of control. You are terrified of being judged. Not only will someone think badly of you, but worse still, your already vulnerable child will be scrutinized even further.
As our children move towards adulthood, they need us more, not less.
But adolescence brings isolation and confusion; because now the problems are so much bigger, there are consequences.
In their bid for independence, our children unwittingly shut us out - just when they need us the most. But how can we support them - if we have no idea ourselves?
The problem is that nobody ever taught us how to communicate properly - we were never really shown how to address our own feelings - let alone those of our confused and recalcitrant children.
That said, I need you to understand that it can get better.
We knew that parenting teenagers was going to be different - but not like this. Blimey - we’ve been parenting long enough to have learned something - surely? This is exhausting.
However, this is not a struggle where we can just give up and admit defeat.
Having a teenager is a game of Tug-of-War. Each of you needs to hang on to your end of the rope. Your child needs to see - that however bad life gets - that you will always be there for them. Hanging on - together.
Whilst you are wrestling with your own anxieties and scrambling for the right words to say, your child is struggling even more.
They have yet to develop the emotional intelligence to rationalize what is going on. They reject you because they cannot voice what’s going on in their head, too busy summoning all their energy to desperately hold it together. They are seeking to deal with the tsunami of emotions that plague them on a daily basis. All too often they have no idea what is going on in their heads either - and it is scaring the shit out of them.
They have so many demands from school, their friends, and society, that they feel like they are suffocating.
One young man said to me “It’s that feeling of drowning - but there is no water.”
Your child is terrified that you will lose faith in them.
So please don’t give up on them - even though you are bone tired and you feel that you have nothing else to give.
Yes, it’s scary - but I have your back.
The statistics are so alarming. They say that 75% of mental health issues start at the age of 14. But what the heck can you do - if you don’t understand their struggles?
The trouble starts when you do nothing and just try and convince yourself that it’s just a phase. I truly don’t believe that is an option.
If ignored, these feelings of inadequacy and distress snowball into panic and anxiety attacks. If left unchecked these are likely to develop into something more sinister - self-harm, depression, or even suicidal thoughts.
The Answer.
The thing is when we are struggling, we tend to pull up the drawbridge and hideaway.
This is not always the best solution. Whilst it is scary to reach out for support - it really helps to ask for help from those who have been through similar situations.
I can help you.
It's time to get in touch: 📍 www.caigraham.com/call

“I’m bored” “There’s nothing to do.”
Do the holidays fill you with dread? Or are you thrilled that there are no rules to have to follow?
Summer might be a little different this year - as there are still travel restrictions due to the Coronavirus. As a result, many of us are staying closer to home and might have more time on our hands. Now is an ideal opportunity to help your child to use their time wisely. Perhaps you can show them how to cook a basic spaghetti bolognese - or how to do the laundry without turning everything pink.
The trick is to make these learning skills fun. We don’t want to lecture our kids - but we do want to equip them with the tools they need to cope in the outside world.
In this episode, I give you ideas on how to support your child develop their kitchen skills; how to look after themselves, and the importance of managing their own finances for example.
They will thank you in the long run.
If you have younger kids I also talk about how having daily themes can also remove the overwhelm of how to keep your child occupied over one the holidays.

You have tried to support your child by helping them develop good study habits and showing them the importance of a well balanced daily routine.
But their grades are dropping and they just seem disinterested.
“What’s the point?”
“Schoolwork is boring.”
In this episode, I discuss the difference between Under-Achieving and Not Performing.
I explain why, more often than not - your child’s lack of interest in their studies and schoolwork is more a result of Fear rather than Laziness.
This is not about making sure your child gets straight A’s all the time - it is about helping your child reach their full potential ( inside and outside the classroom ) whatever that means for them

As our children approach adulthood, they are so desperate to gain and develop their newfound independence - so the last thing they want is parental restrictions being thrust upon them to cramp their style!
BUT - in this fast-paced world - Boundaries are EXACTLY what our children need.
In this episode, I discuss the importance of sticking to your guns and having healthy boundaries for your child to adhere to.
Boundaries are often be greeted by teenagers with repeated objections - but our children do indeed thrive when there are clearly defined parameters to live by (just like motorists adhering to the Highway Code) - without specific rules, family life would be chaotic.
Boundaries bring clarity.
I explain why boundaries need to be child-centered and not an attempt for parents to maintain the upper hand!
Children feel safer with boundaries in place - though teenagers are highly likely to admit to this. Without particular ‘standards’ being put into place, each decision and course of action turns into a negotiable tug-of-war. This just builds resentment as each power struggle escalates.
I talk about what parents can do to ease the friction in the home so that healthy boundaries can be put in place and give way to a calmer atmosphere in the home.

“There’s nothing to look forward to.”
“ There’s no end in sight.”
“I’m stuck in a rut.”
Does any of this sound familiar?
When we don’t have anything to look forward to we can feel discouraged and despondent. Every day feels like Groundhog Day.
In this episode, I talk about the importance of taking responsibility and planning your own future.
It might feel as though the future looks dreary - but only if you let it!
The trick is convincing your monkey mind that you’ve got something great on the horizon. It could be a new job or moving house. Perhaps you want to take up a new hobby or get on with something that you have been putting off for too long.
Whatever it is - planning really helps.
So grab a pen and a notebook and start writing.
✔️ Decide what you DON’T want.
✔️ Decide what you DO want.
✔️ What are the pros and cons of each option?
✔️ Who can help you?
✔️ How much time do you have?
✔️ How will you feel when you achieve what you want?
Your Unconscious Mind needs to have things to focus on. Things to look forward to. Things to work towards. These pointers will help.

There is so much unrest at the moment following the death of George Floyd - a black man who died from asphyxiation whilst in police custody because a white police officer knelt on his neck for 9 minutes.
Understandably there is anger and protests are appearing across the globe.
In this episode, I give guidance to Parents in how best to talk to their children about racism and how the deep-rooted bigotry within many of our societies has to change. There is no going back to the “status quo.”
As parents, we are our child’s first role model. We help them shape their values and their beliefs - we can, therefore, shape how we heal systemic and historic racism. The change starts with us, parents.
What can we do as parents?

In this episode, I talk about how to communicate with a teenager who doesn’t really want to talk to you.
When teenagers are in the home - communication suddenly takes on a different form!
Perhaps the only communication going on at the moment is yelling and door slamming. It’s not unusual.
Maybe there is silence - as everyone appears to be trying to avoid one another.
Let’s face it - teenagers often become less keen to share what’s going on in their heads - and they tend to retreat to their room for peace and quiet. That’s normal.
But despite all this - it is important for parents to keep the lines of communication open - so that you can help them and support them when they need you.

Teenagers’ brains are under construction - and with this comes chaos and overwhelm.
It’s a scary time for them - when their minds are a melting pot or hormones and invariably they don’t know which way is up.
It’s our responsibility as parents to hold a space for our teenagers as they get to grips with what’s going on in their heads.
This maturation carries well on into their twenties - so it’s going to save a lot of heartaches if we start adapting as soon as possible.
Whilst they are traveling through adolescence they will indeed:
✔️ Start questioning our authority
✔️Pushing our buttons
✔️Making questionable decisions
✔️Struggle with their emotions and feelings
this is what independence looks like. So (like it or not) we are stuck with it!
Our children are learning how to become a young adult.
It’s what they are programmed to do - so there’s no point in trying to resist. What I suggest we do is :
