The 9th annual Human Freedom Index (HFI) was released last month by authors from the Cato Institute in the US and the Fraser Institute in Canada. People who are regular cannabis users are at an increased risk of experiencing complications after surgery, according to a study by researchers with UTHealth Houston. The study was published in a recent issue of JAMA Surgery. Joining me to talk about cannabis use disorder and the findings of the study is Paul Potnuru, MD. The use of the anti-malarial drug, hydroxychloroquine, for the potential treatment of COVID-19, has been one of the most unusual things I’ve observed during this pandemic as it became very political after former President Donald Trump last summer advocated for its use as a treatment option. Hydroxychloroquine was first touted as a potential cure for COVID-19 by the French doctor Didier Raoult on the basis of a small and inconclusive study at the start of the pandemic. The FDA cautioned against its use and multiple studies demonstrated potential side effects like cardiac arrhythmias and others showed the drugs effect was not that gr eat--it did not prevent the development of COVID-19 , it was unlikely to be beneficial in clearing viral infections including the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Today, I look at a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine that concludes there is no compelling data to suggest that hydroxychloroquine is effective.

Donald A. Henderson is credited with eliminating smallpox on the globe. A great scientist and public health official who headed the World Health Organization's smallpox division years ago. Dr. Henderson died in 2016, but his words concerning dealing with pandemics, particularly on what not to do, are clearly spelled out in the 2006 article, Disease Mitigation Measures in the Control of Pandemic Influenza. In this podcast I briefly go over what Henderson and his colleagues had to say after a study came out in early 2006 promoting quarantines, closures and lockdowns.
Sheila Jackson Lee is a US representative from the Houston, Texas area who every year introduces a number of off-the-chain pieces of legislation that never go anywhere. On Jan. 4th alone, she introduced in excess of 25 bills with a bill on reparations getting the most press to date. However, one piece of legislation Congresswoman Jackson Lee introduced that has mostly flown under the radar is a full on assault on gun owners and gun ownership. And this bill should have every freedom loving person concerned particularly in this strangest of political climates. The bill is HR 127-- the “Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act.”
