In this special episode of Taste for Truth, I want to share an update and invite you to continue this journey with me over at the Christian Habits podcast, where I talk about breaking free from overeating, habits, procrastination, and growing in our relationship with God. I’m so grateful for all the guests who have shared their stories here, and if you’re new, I recommend starting with the episode “How to Break Free from an Overeating Stronghold or a Skinny Stronghold.” While Taste for Truth will remain available as a resource, I’m excited to offer new online courses at barbraveling.com/course and hope to see you over at my other podcast for ongoing encouragement and support.
Chapters 0:24 - Introduction to Taste for Truth Podcast 1:34 - Future Plans for Online Courses 1:54 - Closing Thoughts and Encouragement Episode Summary In this episode, I take a moment to share some updates with my listeners regarding my ongoing journey with the Taste for Truth podcast and the new direction it’s taking. While I have cherished the time spent discussing topics related to overeating and emotional eating, I want everyone to know that I am also actively podcasting at the Christian Habits podcast. This platform has allowed me to expand my discussions beyond eating habits, exploring various aspects of life including how to break free from negative emotions, procrastination, and strengthening our relationship with God. Each of these areas plays a crucial role in addressing the struggles associated with emotional eating, and I aim to provide listeners with the tools they need to honor God in their eating habits.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the guests who have joined me on the Taste for Truth podcast. The vulnerability displayed during our coaching and victory interviews has been a profound experience, and hearing from authors and coaches has enriched our discussions significantly. It's been a pleasure to connect and share insights with everyone about the challenges of overeating, and I hope to continue providing valuable content that resonates with our audience.
For those who are new to the podcast, I recommend starting with my recent episode, “How to Break Free from an Overeating Stronghold or a Skinny Stronghold.” In this episode, I summarize my key recommendations on overcoming overeating, which I believe will serve as a solid foundation for anyone seeking help in this area. Additionally, I encourage listeners to explore the previous episodes and interviews for more in-depth discussions and insights that can guide them in their journeys.
Looking forward, I am excited to announce that I will be transitioning toward online courses that will further delve into subjects like emotional eating and renewing the mind. For anyone interested in these upcoming resources, I invite you to visit barbraveling.com/course for more information. As I reflect on the experiences shared through this podcast, I remain hopeful and prayerful for all of you as we navigate our paths and seek guidance from God in our lives.

Many of us have struggled with food for years—turning to it for comfort, relief, or even a sense of control. Others have battled with the pressure of being “skinny,” believing that achieving a certain body shape will bring happiness. But what if true freedom lies not in food or body image but in shifting our perspective and relying on God? In this episode of the Taste for Truth podcast, we’ll explore how to break free from these strongholds and embrace a healthier, more fulfilling life.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * The difference between biblical strongholds, which were places of refuge, and the spiritual strongholds of overeating or having a skinny idol that keep us in bondage * How to weaken our strongholds by renewing our minds * Why it's important to set boundaries around food, and then renew our mind whenever we break them * What fuels a "skinny stronghold" and how to break free * How praying for others and loving others well can help break insecurity about our appearance * Why we need to develop a habit of going to God for refuge * Key Bible verses: Colossians 3:12-15 to show notes and 1 Corinthians 13

The live 7-Week Master Class on Transformation Begins January 28, 2025!!! Do you ever say, “I can’t believe I’ve been a Christian for x number of years and I’m still struggling with this?” Are you reluctant to work on transformation because you’re afraid you’ll fail like you did last time? Do you have some area of your life where you feel stuck?
My guess is that we can all answer “yes” to at least one of those questions. It’s discouraging to fail over and over again.
Romans 12:2 tells us that the answer to our struggles is to renew our minds. But there are two problems with this approach: 1) We don’t necessarily know what that means or 2) we do know how to renew our minds but we can’t make ourselves do it consistently enough to see transformation.
My 7-Week Master Class on Transformation will help you with both of those problems. We’ll get together, each choose an area of our lives to work on, and work together on transformation.
What area of transformation would you like help with? Here are a few areas you may want to work on during this transformation class:
What are some side benefits (but often the biggest benefits of all) of working on transformation? No matter what practical area you choose to work on, God will use the transformation process to help you achieve the following goals:
What is the set up of the class? Here are a few features of the class:
When will the class start? The class will begin on January 28, 2025. We will meet weekly for 7 sessions on Tuesdays at 12:00 EST. Each class will be be 1 to 1 1/2 hours long.
What if I can’t make the live sessions? If you can’t make the live sessions, I’ll have a replay available by the next day, possibly sooner. The replays will be available until at least 6/1/25, possibly longer, so that you have time to do the class.
What is the cost of the class? Although classes like this are often quite expensive, I want everyone to be able to take it, so I’m offering the class at $27 USD.
Is there a deadline for signing up for the class? Yes, the deadline is January 28, 2025. This is not an on-demand class so even if you plan to take it later, you’ll need to sign up now so I can email you links to the class videos and homework each week.
Where can I sign up? To get started, go to the click here to go to the product purchase page and sign up.
Six years ago, Stacey had just lost 150 pounds. Today - she is still living in victory! Many who are successful in weight loss, unfortunately, have difficulty keeping it off and continuing to live in freedom. My conversation with Stacey today on the Taste for Truth Podcast is chock full of insight about not only how to lose the weight, but also maintaining a 150-pound weight loss with God's help.
Listen to my first interview with Stacey here.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * How Stacey has become totally free from cravings * How putting in the work with one particular practice has helped keep the weight off this time * The reasons that Stacey used food to numb and be "invisible" * How to manage the social difficulties that arise when following boundaries with food * Navigating some different challenges after the weight started coming off * The first step to change
Resources Mentioned on the Podcast * I Deserve a Donut * Upcoming Online Courses * Counseling Resource * Taste for Truth * Freedom from Emotional Eating * Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating
Announcements I also wanted to mention that I will be tapering off and ultimately ending the Taste for Truth Podcast in January of 2025. I will still be doing my Christian Habits Podcast, and all of the past Taste for Truth episodes will still be available! I'm just at a place in my life where I need to find a work-life balance that is sustainable, and going down to one podcast seems like a very helpful way to do that.
I am also planning to give online course creation a try. If you are interested in staying informed about that, click here.

[This interview was originally published on 10/10/2018.]
Have you ever been completely hopeless about weight-loss? Do you think you've tried it all, and you are on the verge of giving up? My guest today, Stacey, felt exactly the same. However, with God's help, she has been able to lose (and maintain) a 150 pound weight loss!
Today on the Taste for Truth Podcast, I am doing something I have rarely (if ever!) done before: replaying a very encouraging interview! One reason for doing this is because I recently had a second interview with the same person, Stacey, and she has successfully kept the weight off for over 6 years! I wanted it to be easy to have a frame of reference between the first and second episodes. The new interview with Stacey will come out in December.
Stacey followed a program where she had to cut out sugar and white flour and plan out what she would eat each day.
One of the problems with programs like this is that we feel like life is boring because we can't have sugar. Towards the end of the podcast, Stacey shares how she deals with that issue, renewing her mind before she enters into situations where she might feel like she's missing out by not eating sugar.
Whether you follow Stacey's boundaries or not, you'll be able to learn from her experience as she goes to God for help with life.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * What the difference was this time that led to Stacey's 150 pound weight loss * The revelation of how we often use food isn't what God intended * How Stacey was able to stay the course, even through her strong cravings * Different strategies for renewing the mind * Lies that Stacey had to work through when getting to maintenance
Resources Mentioned on the Podcast * I Deserve a Donut * Upcoming Online Courses * Counseling Resource * Taste for Truth * Freedom from Emotional Eating * Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating
Announcements I also wanted to mention that I will be tapering off and ultimately ending the Taste for Truth Podcast sometime in January or, at the latest, February, of 2025. Many of us picked up lies about food and eating when we were very young. Those lies tend to follow us into adulthood and sabotage our relationship with food. However, there is hope! Through the renewing of the mind, and going to God (instead of food) for help with life's difficulties, we can regain a healthy relationship with food. On the Taste for Truth Podcast today, Jennifer talks about her journey to finding victory in this area of her life.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * The early lessons Jennifer learned that sabotaged her relationship with food * The surprising result of giving up the skinny idol * Trigger times of the day * What was different in Jennifer's weight loss journey this time around * "Growth points" and perfectionism * The disconnect about having boundaries in other areas of our lives and having boundaries with food
Announcements I also wanted to mention that I will be tapering off and ultimately ending the Taste for Truth Podcast sometime in the next 2-4 months. Stress is an everyday struggle for most of us in Western society. We turn to many unhealthy things to cope which often lead to health struggles and weight gain. It actually makes the problem worse! However, stress eating does not have to be our reality any longer. I'm excited to have Katrina Sequenzia as my guest again today on the Taste for Truth Podcast. Katrina shares her personal struggles in this area as well as many practical tips to overcome the unhealthy coping mechanisms in our lives.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * A personal struggle that had Katrina turning to another coping mechanism to get through * The lie that we always tell ourselves in the midst of stressful times to justify our out-of-control eating * Some of the biological reasons why we turn to food during times of stress * Many practical (and healthy) ways to cope with difficult moments in our day-to-day lives * What movement does for us with regard to stress * Loads, limits, and creating margin

If you've ever wondered how all of those people I've interviewed in the past are doing now, you'll enjoy today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast! I'm having a second "check-in" interview with Sarah whom I previously interviewed over four years ago. Back in 2020, Sarah was a new mom and was experiencing great success with changing her eating and lifestyle habits. Today our discussion centers around how pivotal exercise has been for Sarah in her journey, and about her struggles and victories while navigating many life changes.

On this episode of the Taste for Truth podcast, I am doing something different and kind of fun! I decided to do a mish-mash of sorts of a few different episodes. I'll be doing a meditation from my book Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating ("It would be crazy not to eat this!"), and then also a series of "Ask Barb" questions that I've received from listeners. There a variety of topics covered, but all of them are centered around eating habits for ourselves or others. I hope you find something that is helpful and encouraging!
Announcements I also wanted to mention that I will be tapering off and ultimately ending the Taste for Truth podcast sometime in the near future. Don't worry - I will still be doing my Christian Habits Podcast, and all of the past Taste for Truth episodes will still be available! It's so easy in our culture today to get caught up in trying to find our self-worth in material things, money, our jobs, or the way we look. The idea of being skinny can be something that we begin to obsess over because we somehow think our identity is wrapped up in our appearance. This isn't what God wants for us and, consequently, also makes us very unhappy. On today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast, we'll debunk 10 lies that perpetuate this skinny idol.
I also wanted to mention that I will be leading an online Bible study through my new Philippians Bible study in the month of May. If you're interested in finding out more and signing up, get the info here. I do think it is so helpful to go through regular Bible studies - even when you're trying to lose weight or be healthier - because we are getting more of the truth of God's word in our system (which helps us combat all the lies we believe that fuel our eating problems). This particular book deals with many different topics in the book of Philippians, one of them being finding our identity in God. I hope you'll find it helpful!
What We Discussed on the Podcast * How our "Good Christian" list can adversely affect our self-worth * Different things we turn to to find our identity in rather than God * "I need to be skinny to be accepted." * "When I'm skinny, I'll be happier." * "People think I'm a loser because I'm overweight." * A passage in Philippians that reminds us what we cannot have confidence in * Some tips for truth journaling

I'm doing something different on this episode: I'm interviewing three people at one time! It's a mom and her two adult daughters, and we talk through many of the struggles they have had with food over the years, and how they are all finding their way to freedom in this area of their lives.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * Free-for-all holiday eating * Perfectionism eating * Strategies for avoiding a binge and a 3-month hiatus from boundaries * These lies and their corresponding truths: + "It's a holiday, I can eat as much as I want." + "If there are sweets in the house, you should eat them." + "I'm bored, food would be a great way to deal with it." * The key part that submission to God plays in breaking free from an eating stronghold * Different renewing of the mind strategies * Food as a coping mechanism

A few weeks ago, I had an interesting conversation with a reader. She talked about how hard it was to get her kids to eat healthy things. Many parents these days can relate to the challenges of picky eaters, meal-time meltdowns, and general food struggles. On today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast (links below), I answer some reader questions revolving around helping our kids to avoid negative eating habits.
What We Discussed on the Podcast * How my husband and I raised our four children to eat * My take on whether or not kids should eat the same meal as the parents * How I inadvertently taught my kids some emotional eating tendencies * Practical ways to help our kids to not be entitled regarding food or otherwise * The two unhealthy routes we can take with regard to obsessive eating * My thoughts on how to train our children regarding food that has the best chance for a healthy result

Many of us turn to food when we are bored, or when we want to avoid a project we know we should be doing! Unfortunately, this can easily become an unhealthy pattern that leads to weight-gain and out-of-control eating. If you're all too familiar with this struggle and want to stop the cycle of boredom eating, my episode today on the Taste for Truth Podcast should be helpful (links below)!
Share an Update! I also wanted to mention that I'm excited to try something a little different for a few episodes of the Taste for Truth Podcast. I would love to have updates and "victory moments" from people that I've interviewed over the years! If you would be willing, go to this website and record a brief message letting us know how you're doing! This is not an interview at all, it would just be you recording whatever you'd like to say in a short message - I think the limit is 4 minutes. Anyway, I think it'd be so fun and encouraging to hear how everyone is doing! Give it a try!
What We Discussed on the Podcast * How often our childhood shapes our interactions with food * Non-diet boundaries * Why sometimes we should first begin renewing our minds NOT about food or eating * The emotional toll of procrastination * How to renew your minds about specific situations * What it means to hold losing weight with an "open hand"

I would love to know how many pounds I've gained and lost in my life. In the old days it was all about "Go on a diet, lose weight, live it up, then gain the weight back." Over and over and over again. Every once in awhile I could muster up the self control to lose the weight, but I always gained it back. I had little self control, I loved food, and I was an emotional eater. And because of that I gained the weight back every single time.
I actually knew how to lose the weight, but I didn't know how to keep it off. So today I'd like to look at why we gain our weight back and how to stop the old merry-go-round. Let's begin by looking at why we gain it back.
7 Reasons We Gain Our Weight Back 1. We let go of boundaries once we lose our weight. Think of it. Have you ever lost weight without setting some sort of boundaries? Maybe you did intuitive eating and ate only when you were hungry and stopped when you were full. Or you joined Weight Watchers or you did intermittent fasting. But in some way you set limits for yourself. Unfortunately, once we lose the weight, all limits go out the window and that's the biggest thing that makes us gain the weight back. There are two ways we do this: 1) We do it consciously. We think, "Yay!! I get to live it up again!!" Then immediately go to living it up and gain our weight back. 2) We do it without realizing we're doing it. So for example, I may have lost my weight by counting carbs faithfully with a set limit each day of how much I could have. When I lose the weight, I still try to watch how many carbs I eat, but I don't have a set limit. Or I lose weight with Weight Watchers. I still focus on free foods and eat as many as I want--but I no longer count points. So what we have are some practices, but we don't have actual boundaries. 2. We switch to different boundaries and don't go through the necessary work to learn how to follow our boundaries. In the first reason, we let go of boundaries altogether, but with this reason, we actually do have boundaries--we just haven't learned how to follow them. Here's an example. Let's say you lost your weight with a diet, but then you decide to switch to 3 meals and one snack a day for your boundaries. Since those boundaries are looser than what you're used to, there is a learning curve to figuring out how to maintain your weight within those boundaries. If we don't make the effort to learn how to make those boundaries work, we'll gain our weight back. 3. We have a new trial in our lives that makes us feel like eating. Often we'll be going along smoothly and then something happens that makes us want to eat. Some trial that triggers all our emotional eating tendencies. Maybe there's a pandemic. Or the world is looking a little scary. Or someone you love is having a crisis. Or you're having a crisis. When those new trials crop up, it makes us want to eat. And we may gain our weight back at that time. 4. We stick to our boundaries most of the year but go off during holidays and vacations. This is a good one to think about now because we're smack dab in the middle of the holidays--halfway between Thanksgiving in the United States and Christmas. When we go on vacation or it's a holiday, it's easy to justify a few extra treats. We think, Oh I'll just eat this now and get back on track when I get back to normal life. When we do that, we usually only gain a few pounds a year, but after ten years, those few pounds a year have become 30-40 pounds and we're back in a situation where we need to do the whole thing over again. 5. We reintroduce sugar and/or flour when that was part of the reason we lost the weight to begin with. I've talked to many people who lost their weight without renewing their minds. They were able to do it because they took away their biggest source of temptation: flour and sugar. Unfortunately, I've also talked to a lot of people who then reintroduced sugar and flour at some point and either gained all their weight back or at least a good share of it. 6. We lose it with self control and/or obsession rather than renewing. I've talked to many women who are either all in or all out. When they work on losing weight, they have a hard time doing it without obsessing about it. The temptation is to think about being healthy, exercising, and eating right all the time. This becomes so exhausting that eventually they can't handle the stress anymore and go back to eating. Then there are people like me who don't obsess and have no temptations in the exercise-too-much department, but I still used to gain my weight back because I never took the time to change the way I thought about food. 7. We start believing new lies and don't take the time to renew. With this reason for weight gain, we do renew while losing it. In fact we renew our minds so much that we change the way we think about food and we no longer even want to overindulge or binge. But then if we're not careful, we start fudging our boundaries.
So what do we do? With so many reasons driving us to gain our weight back, is there still hope that we can avoid all of that? Yes, there is hope! The Bible tells us we can do all things through Him who strengthens us. It also tells us that He who began a good work in us will complete it. God can help us stay free from the control of food. Let's look at seven strategies we can use to stay free from the control of food.
7 Ways to Keep Our Weight Off 1. Keep relying on God for help with life. So many times I've had women tell me, "I'm so thankful I learned how to truth journal. It has helped me go to God for help with so many things." They started out renewing for food, but then started renewing for life and that drew them closer to God. With me it was the opposite. I started renewing first for the hard things in life, and only later started renewing for food. Here's the truth: God wants us to go to Him for help with life. And the more we go to Him, the more we'll fall in love with Him and the more we'll grow in our character and be like Him. And as a little side benefit, if we keep going to God for help with life, we'll be far less likely to gain our weight back because we won't be going to the refrigerator. 2. Renew often about each new trial that comes up. Things will often be trucking along just fine, and then some new difficulty comes up in life that causes us stress, worry, or fear, and we find ourselves reaching for food again. When we learn the valuable skill of truth journaling, we can start going to God right away when a new trial comes into our lives. We can truth journal and ask Him to show us the lies we are believing about our current situation. By going to God about the trial first, we will be far less likely to continue to run to our old idol (food) to bring us comfort. 3. Catch any weight gain early. It's far easier to lose a couple pounds than 20 pounds. And it's far easier to lose 20 pounds than 100 pounds. Some women will put away the scale for good, but when they find their clothes getting tight it's a wakeup call to be more diligent about following their boundaries--and renewing if necessary. For me, I weigh about once a week. If I find my weight is up for several weeks in a row, I try to be careful about eating less at meals. 4. Continue to have firm lifelong boundaries. I can't emphasize how important it is to have some sort of boundaries with food if you're a person who loves food, is not opposed to large quantities, and has a tendency to eat emotionally. Boundaries keep our passions reigned in. 5. Be VERY careful about reintroducing sugar if you lost the weight without it. And by careful I mean either don't do it, or do it carefully. 6. Be careful during vacations and holidays. Fudged boundaries (which might involve actual fudge!), lead to weight gain. 7. Check to see if you still believe any lies that make you overeat and also look out for any new lies that crop up (see below).
Lies We Often Believe after We Lose the Weight 1. It's okay to break my boundaries because I'm free from the control of food now. I may be free from the control of food, but that doesn't mean I can't gain my weight back and I will gain it back if I consistently eat too much! 2. This little bit of sugar won't hurt. While it's possible this little bit of sugar won't hurt, it's also possible that this little bit of sugar will set in motion weeks or months or years of overeating. I should think carefully if I really want to do this and then make a plan for it if I decide to do it and go back to renewing if necessary. The truth is that I am a person who tends to overeat with sugar--I just love it too much--so I'll probably have to be careful all of my life. 3. I still have boundaries. I don't actually have boundaries. I have intentions--more fruit and vegetables for example--but I don't have primary boundaries that tell me how often or how much I can eat. If I really want to keep this weight off, I need to have boundaries and follow them. Boundaries keep me safe.
Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating I talk more about boundaries in my recent book, Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating, and hope to do a video or podcast about them sometime as well. Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating also contains 100 exercise you can use to renew your mind to break free and stay free from the control of food.
Taste for Truth: A 30 Day Weight Loss Bible Study is a 30-day Bible study focused on the lies that make you eat, body image, and the weight loss process. I wrote this Bible study to go along with the questions and Bible verses in I Deserve a Donut, and it’s best if you have both books when you do this study. I Deserve a Donut is also available as a free app for your phone. The Android app isn't working on new phones at the moment (November 2023), but I hope to have it up and running again soon!

Most of us would agree that in order to have a change in our eating habits, we must first have a change in our minds! Yet, even knowing this, many of us still struggle to make the commitment to renewing our minds on a regular basis. On today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast (links below), I coach Tonya through identifying many of the lies that keep us from renewing.
What We Discussed on the Podcast + Identifying possible stressors in our lives that would cause us to emotionally eat + How sometimes it's better to renew about emotions (or problems) we face in the day quickly to keep them from becoming really big emotions + How to be proactive in truth journaling + Why truth journaling is such a powerful tool for realignment + The idea that making a goal that makes your life easier (like truth journaling) is a strategic way to approach change + Some tips for having a really effective truth-journaling session (also found in Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating)
7 Lies That Keep Us from Renewing 1. It's not going to work. 2. I don't feel like doing it, so I shouldn't do it. 3. Truth journaling isn't a fun way to relax, so I shouldn't do it. 4. It takes too long. 5. If I do it, it will make me not want to eat. (And I want to eat.) 6. I'm too bad to go before God. 7. I've messed up so God doesn't love me.

Do you ever find yourself reaching for some exciting food because you're bored? Eating is quick-fix way to conquer boredom, but often leads to regret. In this post I want to talk about ten strategies to help you stop boredom eating. Let's begin by asking the question, "Why am I eating when bored?"
Why am I eating when bored? For those of us who crave excitement, we want anything that will take us out of our mundane life and into a little bit of fun and excitement. And of course the most easily available option is the refrigerator. So of course we'll eat when we're bored if we enjoy food! It gives us that quick fix of fun and excitement to ease just a tad bit of our boredom. A better question to ask may be, "Why am I bored to begin with?" Let's take a look at that because if we can stop being bored, we can stop boredom eating.
Why am I bored? Have you ever heard a friend say, "I'm never bored" or "Boredom is a choice"? I have. And each time I hear it, I think to myself (or more likely out loud), "I'm often bored!" In fact some days I feel like I'm going out of my mind with boredom!! So why are we bored, when our friend is never bored? I can think of ten reasons.
We'll take a look at ten strategies for how to stop boredom eating by learning not to be bored in a minute, but before we do that, let's look at three practical tips to stop boredom eating.
3 Practical Tips to Stop Boredom Eating 1. Hide or remove exciting food from your house. Let's face it, more often than not, if it's there to eat, we'll eat it! To solve that problem, try not to have exciting foods in the house--or if you can't do that, ask someone in your house to hide them from you! 2. Make it harder to buy exciting foods when you're out on the town. If you have a tendency to stop and get exciting food when you're out driving, find a way to make it harder to get that food. You could change your driving route, put your wallet in the far corner of the back seat so you can't reach it when you go through the drive through, or renew your mind before you make that drive so you don't want the exciting treats. If you're within walking distance of exciting treats, consider leaving your billfold at home so you won't be tempted to get them. 3. Eliminate exciting foods from your diet. Sometimes it's easier to have none than one. At different phases of my life I've given up sugar. Was my life boring in the food department? Yes!! But did it help me give up boredom eating? Again, yes!! This is a drastic move, but it can actually make life better if you're constantly craving sweets or chips or something like that and then giving into your cravings whenever you're bored.
Okay, now that we have the practical tips out of the way, let's look at the bigger picture. And in some ways this bigger picture is about how to stop boredom itself--because if we learn how to stop being bored, we'll learn how to stop boredom eating.
How to Stop Boredom Eating (By Learning How to Stop Being Bored!) - 10 Strategies 1. Let go of unrealistic expectations for this phase of your life. While we might expect life to be constantly exciting if we're backpacking counselors at a Christian camp, we can't expect life to be constantly exciting with most stages of life! Take a minute and think about your current life phase. On a scale of 1 to 10 how exciting should you expect your days to be? Based on your answer, give up your unrealistic expectations and then move onto the next step. 2. Embrace regular life. Think of this way. What if you lived in a war-torn country and all of a sudden the war stopped. Life wasn't fun and exciting but at least there wouldn't be a war going on. Would you be thankful for regular life or would you be craving excitement! I think we'd all be thankful for regular life. The more we can embrace life as-is and tell ourselves that this regular life is great, the less bored we'll be. 3. Make life about God. I still remember years ago complaining to a friend about how boring my life was. My friend, said, Barb, what is excitement from a biblical perspective? I thought about that for a minute and replied that excitement from a biblical perspective would be growing closer to God and serving Him and even doing things like helping others break free from strongholds. From a biblical perspective my life (and work) was exciting. But I wasn't seeing that because I was wanting some traditional cultural excitement. 4. Learn how to manage your work or day-to-day life. If you spend your days at home, learn to manage your work and time well. I talk a bit about this in my book, Freedom from Procrastination, and I am learning more about this as I go along. This is something that will be different for each of us, and it's a project in and of itself. 5. Work on overcoming procrastination. The less we procrastinate, the less time we'll spend being bored. Not only will we have less down time (because we'll actually be getting those things done), but we'll also be less bored because we won't have that dreaded job hanging over our heads. That said, it's incredibly difficult to overcome procrastination. If you need help with it, check out my Bible study and workbook, Freedom from Procrastination. 6. Plan rewards for work or find ways to make work fun. If you're a person who is more fun-focused rather than accomplishment focused, you'll be far happier if you find a way to make work fun or at the very least plan some rewards for work. 7. Get more on your plate. If you don't have enough to fill your days, think of new ways to fill it. God never meant for us to spend our days watching Netflix all day! Find ways to serve others and love others well. The more we focus on others, the less we focus on ourselves and how bored we are. 8. Find non-addictive ways to fit excitement into your day. There is nothing wrong with trying to make life more exciting, as long as God would approve of the type of excitement we're adding to our lives! If you're in a season of life where you don't naturally have a lot of fun and excitement in your life, try to plan for it. For example, when I'm planning coaching calls, podcast interviews, or appointments, I try to space them out through the week so I have at least one of those a day since I'm energized by being with people. I also usually talk to one friend or family member by phone each day. These are non-addictive ways I can add fun and excitement to my life. You may be different than me, so you'll have to ask, "What energizes me?" and try to add some of that to your life each day if possible. 9. Put limits on your phone, Netflix, or other entertainment sources. We spoke earlier about how we train ourselves to need constant excitement. We do the same things with food. When we eat exciting food too often, we train ourselves to need exciting food all the time. It seems counterintuitive, but the more we reign in our desires for constant excitement and learn to have it as treats rather than regular life, the less bored we'll find ourselves. 10. Make a plan for downtime. If you regularly experience boredom in the evenings, late afternoons, or weekends, make an actual schedule for how you'll spend your time during those periods. It can be a schedule with time slots (7:00-8:00 board game with kids, 8:00-8:30 read, etc.) or it could just be an order of events: certain things you'll do in a certain order each day during that downtime but without a time tied to them (do dishes, fold clothes, go on a walk, renew my mind, read, etc.).
I also wanted to add that I have another helpful post about dealing with boredom, it's called: Use These Verses When You're Bored Instead of Eating! Check it out if you need additional support with overcoming boredom eating in your life.

Do you ever find yourself saying, "I can't believe I'm still struggling with my weight! I should be over this by now!"? If you do, you're not the only one. That's one of the most frequent comments I hear from women about their weight.
We think we should have it all together, but it's not surprising that we don't! After all, we love food. We eat for emotional reasons. And this isn't a goal we can check off our list and say, "There! That's done!" Instead, we need to keep following our boundaries day after day, month after month, and year after year. No wonder we feel like a weight loss failure at times!
Here's the thing though: We're not weight loss failures. Let me say that again. We're. Not. Weight. Loss. Failures. Instead, we're people who broke our boundaries today. It's important that we make that distinction in how we talk to ourselves. Because if we're defined by failure, there's no use going on. We might as well give up right now and start eating what we want. But if we're just a person who failed at following her boundaries today, then it would be better to look at why we failed and correct our course so we'll be less likely to fail tomorrow.
We can do that by looking at how we spend our days, what food is in the house, what we do when life is hard, and what we do when we break our boundaries. In this podcast episode, we'll look at what we do when we break our boundaries.
Picture yourself following your boundaries. Life is going well and your weight loss program is going well, but then one day you break your boundaries. Majorly. You now have five options of what to do next.
5 Options When We Just Broke Our Boundaries and Think We're a Weight Loss Failure 1. Give up. Quit trying to follow your boundaries. Eat what you want for the rest of the day or better yet for the rest of the week! 2. Persevere in your own strength. Get up the next morning and say, "I'm going to follow my boundaries today!" but then don't go to God for help when you break them. (And I don't know about you but I am FAR more likely to break boundaries the next day if I broke them the previous day.) 3. Persevere in God's strength by asking Him to change you. Keep trying to follow your boundaries and regularly ask God to help you follow your boundaries. 4. Persevere in God's strength by asking God to help you follow your boundaries and then renew your mind every once in awhile. Renew your mind every once in awhile (but not often enough for the truth to really sink in), and visit with God about what you learned. Ask Him for wisdom, insight, and strength to follow our boundaries. 5. Persevere in God's strength by asking God to help you follow your boundaries and then renew your mind either every time you feel like breaking our boundaries or several times a day. Renew your mind several times a day or every time you feel like breaking your boundaries (even though you don't feel like it and you're sick to death of doing it), and visit with God about what you learned. Ask Him for wisdom, insight, and strength to follow your boundaries.
Now let me ask you a question. Which option do you think would give you the best hope of lasting success with following your boundaries--which translates to lasting success with weight loss?
I think we'd all say the 5th option, but we also know how hard it is to take that 5th option. Our flesh doesn't want us to take it (because it wants to eat), we don't want to take it (because it takes too much time), and Satan doesn't want us to take it (because he likes to see us controlled by food). I'm hoping my new book Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating (on shelves November 1) will help you take the third option.
In fact let's take that third option right now. Following is one of the renewing exercises from Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating. In this exercise I list five lies we believe when we feel like a weight loss failure. These lies come from lies women have told me in coaching sessions and also lies I've told myself!
When You Feel Like a Weight Loss Failure (page 220 in Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating) Write truths for the following beliefs.

What I Would Write for the Truths Did you write down your truths? What I usually find as I record truth to the lies I'm believing is that my desires and emotions actually change as I'm writing them. If you find that your desires and emotions aren't changing, check out the 8 tips I have for recording the truths to your lies in the chapter on truth journaling in Say Goodbye to Emotional Eating. Following are five possible truths you could write. (Note: I may write a completely different set of truths if I was doing this exercise tomorrow.)
Do you see how writing the truth would change my desires? Truth really does set us free. It makes us want to follow our boundaries!
When we break our boundaries, it's essential to see ourselves through God's eyes, rather than our own self-condemning eyes or the (imagined) eyes of a society who (we think) condemns us (even though most of them don't). God doesn't look at us and say, "You're a weight loss failure!" No, He looks at us and says, "You're my beloved child. You're my beautiful creation. Or even, you're my friend!" And then He says, "Come to me, my beloved, and let me help you."
Renewing is a way we go to God for help with changing the things we can't change in our own strength (Romans 12:1-2).

Breaking free from sugar cravings and managing your weight is about more than diet and exercise. Sugar is highly addictive and requires multiple steps to break free from its bondage. In this podcast episode, I am interviewing Katrina Sequenzia; Katrina is a Certified Health Coach and Registered Nurse on a mission to help Christians fulfill their God-given purpose by sharing the tools and resources to live a healthy lifestyle.
Katrina shares Seven Habits To Stop Sugar Cravings in today's interview, based on the signature framework from her life-changing programs. By the end of this episode, you will understand why some foods are more addictive than others, the impact that food and stress have on our bodies, and how you can begin the process of healing from your food and sugar addiction.
Episode Highlights: * [00:01:17] Understanding why we become addicted to sugar and other foods? Katrina breaks down the spiritual, physical, and emotional aspects of cravings.
[00:03:48] The body’s chemical reaction to sugar and why we were created to love sweets.
[00:04:48] Dopamine is the feel-good chemical that our brains release, but can we have too much of a good thing? Katrina explains why the answer is Yes!
[00:08:24] Have you ever wondered why diet and exercise sometimes fail to produce results? Katrina and I discuss why and you should avoid extreme diets and fads.

[00:24:03] Where to start your weight loss journey and how to use Katrina's framework to lay the foundation to healing your relationship with sugar.
[00:24:58] Special gift for podcast listeners.
Key Takeaways: * When we attempt to break free from the bondage of food addiction, we often start with exercise and food preparation. Still, the areas that are often ignored make the most impact in our journeys, like putting our faith front and center, rest, and relaxation, to name a few. * Food isn't the enemy- the goal of any program should be to develop a relationship with the glorious foods that were created to be consumed according to God's instruction.

It's January 19th, and many of us have already given up on our commitment to "Be Healthy This Year!!!!" It's not that we don't want to be healthy. We do! We're just demoralized by the constant failures that go along with working on a be-healthy habit.
So what do we do to get out of that slump? Pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and make a commitment to try again tomorrow? I don't think so; I used to do that all the time and it didn't work. I didn't have enough self-control to make myself do the things that would lead me toward health or not do the things that kept me unhealthy.
If we really want to be healthy--and we're not one of those people who love exercising and eating healthy--we need to renew our minds. The Bible tells us we're transformed by the renewing of the mind. This works for anything we do in life, including becoming healthy.
The more we get God's perspective on life and food, the more we'll want to do things that will lead us toward health. If you'd like to become healthy this year, here is what I would suggest.
5 Steps to Becoming Healthy if You Don't Have Oodles of Self-Control 1. Renew your mind about food 2-3 times a day by doing 1) the questions in I Deserve a Donut (app or book), 2) the questions in Renewing of the Mind Project, or 3) truth journaling. I would suggest renewing at lunch and again sometime between 3:00 and 5:30 to prepare you with enough truth to make it through the evening. 2. Make a commitment to exercise. If you don't already have a habit, make this a really short commitment: 5-15 minutes or 3000 steps a day. Then increase it as you gain more self-control in that area. 3. Renew your mind when you can't make yourself exercise. You can use the questions in Renewing of the Mind Project in the Starting a Habit section for this. Here are some of the thought in that section of the book that have corresponding questions and Bible verses: This is so boring. I really don't want to do this. I shouldn't have to do this. There's a good reason I can't do this again. This is no fun. I'll do it later. I'm too busy. Will this be worth all the work? 4. Memorize a few Bible verses and meditate on them throughout the day. In the Bible we see Jesus use Scripture to battle temptation. If Jesus used Scripture to walk the straight and narrow, how much more do we need to use it? Here are a few suggestions of Bible verses you could memorize: Luke 12:15, Romans 13:14, 1 Corinthians 6:12, 1 Timothy 4:7b, Philippians 4:11-13, Hebrews 12:11. JULIE - could you ad links to these maybe using the ESV translation? 5. Do a weight loss Bible study. Renewing will help you with the lies that make you overeat and avoid exercise. But it also helps to have a biblical foundation for the truths that will set us free from an unhealthy lifestyle. Bible study will help with that. People often ask me which of my Bible studies to do first. I recommend Freedom from Emotional Eating first if you struggle with emotional eating or entitlement. And Taste for Truth if you're more of an indulgent, careless, or bored overeater. If you like variety, I'd recommend doing the first six lessons in Taste for Truth, then switch over to Freedom from Emotional Eating and go back and forth between the two.
But What If I Can't Make Myself Do Those Things?
Now you may have noticed one tiny little problem. All the things I just mentioned also require discipline! This is where you need some friendship or group support--to make yourself renew your mind. Usually we use accountability to make us follow our eating guidelines or make ourselves exercise. This is nice, but it doesn't change the way we think about eating and exercise. And we need to change the way we think if we want to have lifelong change.
So I would suggest finding a little group. In my last podcast episode with Dr. Melanie Wilson, called How to Achieve Your Goals - 10 Tips, we talked about how to gather a couple of people for the purpose of following through with goals. This would be the perfect thing to do to avoid getting discouraged about your attempts to be healthy. You could start a Bible study at your church (even though that might be scary) or just gather two friends and meet weekly or even monthly. You could do daily accountability for renewing. Let each other know what your goals are (I'll renew 3 times a day, for example), then each morning text each other and ask, did you renew?
Just remember as you do this, though, that you will have bad days. We all do when we're working on a new habit. The key is just to get through those bad days and don't give up. Don't beat yourself up. Don't say mean things to yourself. And don't despair. Every single person on the planet has something they can't get over. Eating too much might be that thing for you.
But... we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! We just need to keep going to Him to get that strength! In today's podcast episode, you'll get a chance to do that. Following are the questions we'll be visiting with God about on today's podcast:
Tired of the Struggle Questions, Bible Verses, and Tips Note: The questions, Bible studies, and tips are all from I Deserve a Donut (and Other Lies That Make You Eat).
Bible Verses Psalm 30:5b Weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.
Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Galatians 6:9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.
Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.
Hebrews 12:11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
James 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Tired of the Struggle Tips Let’s face it. It’s hard to keep dealing with the same problem over and over. Sometimes we feel like throwing in the towel and just giving up.
Don’t do it.
Spiritual battles are just what they’re called: battles. And battles aren’t easy. You can’t enter into battle without entering into suffering.
Here’s a comforting thought, though. It’s far better to suffer with God than without Him. Spiritual battles can be intense, sweet times of fellowship with God—so sweet it almost feels like it’s worth struggling through the problem just to have those times with God.
I want to encourage you to keep going to Him for help. Renew your mind. Take off those lies and put on the truth. Let the Holy Spirit work in you and minister to you and conform you to His image.
The journey won’t be pleasant, but afterwards, you’ll experience the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11). And that will be worth the struggle.

It's that time of year again when parties and treats abound! Many of us who already struggle with overeating find it even more difficult to resist temptation during the holidays. What's a person to do?! Well, there are actually some ways to healthfully navigate this tempting time of year. Let's look at some helpful tips to stop overeating during the holidays.
Change Your Mindset First, we need to adjust the way we think about food. We do this by renewing our minds and confronting any lies we believe that make us overeat. When we overindulge (or with any bad habit, really), there's usually something going on in our minds that is creating that intense desire to overeat.
We may think, I've waited all year for this [insert special food]. We begin to anticipate all of the goodies that we don't regularly eat during the rest of the year. When we start to fixate on our favorite holiday foods - without trying to stem the tide of these thoughts - the desire for them just grows bigger.
Many of us also probably have a strong association between eating and holiday festivities. It's almost as if - in our minds - every party or event is primarily centered around what we plan to be eating. It's often our first thought! We have to learn to focus on the people and fun at the events to begin to decrease the allure of indulgent eating. If all we are looking forward to is the food, then we're setting ourselves up for failure.
Another lie we believe is I only get this food at this time of year, so I better eat up while I can. Here's the truth: almost of all of our favorite foods can be made at any time of the year if we are able to cook it ourselves. We just don't usually think of making it during other seasons. Telling ourselves, you can make this any day you want, will help us avoid the frenzy to eat all of it at once.
We may also think, This is so delicious, I need to eat more! The truth is, the actual taste of the food diminishes for us when we eat too much of it. It's actually way more delicious if we eat a small or just regular amount! We can eat slowly and savor every bite.
Get Things Done Early Another reason we overeat is to avoid doing the things we don't feel like doing. This happens throughout the year, but even more so on the holidays because we often have more on our plates at that time of the year. The more we work on overcoming procrastination, the less likely we'll be to overeat. One way to overcome procrastination is to make a list of your top three things to get done each day.
Don't put things on the list that you'll do anyway. Put those things on the list that you hate to do and know you'll procrastinate. Get those things done first and you'll be less likely to overeat during the day. If you struggle with procrastination, here's a podcast episode that will help: The Dream Planning Podcast - How to Overcome Procrastination with Barb Raveling and Polly Payne.
Go to God for Help with Negative Emotions Often we turn to food, not God, for help with life. Something is going badly and all we want to do is eat. Drown our sorrows in that yummy bowl of ice cream. The more we go to God for help though, the less we'll feel like overeating. He'll help us see life from His perspective, and give us strength and comfort. Eating on the other hand, will only give us immediate relief. It's a temporary fix that leaves us with a life of consequences.
In my experience, it's far better if I go to God early. When I first start feeling upset with something. If I wait until later in the day--when that small emotion has become an overwhelming emotion--it's hard to let go of it. On those days, you often just have to wait until the next day to feel better. If you'd like some tools for dealing with negative emotions, check out the Renew Your Mind tab at the top of this website or the Live in Peace tab. If you're reading this on a mobile device, you can find those tabs by clicking on the menu at the top of this post.
Go for Quality, Not Quantity When I was in high school, my mom encouraged me to buy fewer clothes but higher quality clothes. This was back in the days when there weren't a lot of discount stores around. Because of this philosophy, I missed out on some fun clothes. But what I gained was an uncluttered closet. Most of us would be better off if we had less belongings. Less to take care of, less to clean, and less to clutter up our lives.
Most of us would also be better off if we had less food! What would happen if you started thinking about quality, not quantity in the food department? I'm not talking about being a spoiled person (I'll only eat food if it's high quality!) I'm talking about a philosophy. To enjoy each and every bite of any food you eat, but to stop before you reach the food equivalent of an overflowing closet that adds stress to your life.
If you'd like to give this a try, you could say a little prayer before each meal and ask God to help you dwell on the good, to be thankful, and to praise Him for each and every bite. Let each meal be a time of fellowship with God and with the people with whom you're sharing the meal.
Hold Weight Loss with Open Hands Focusing on weight loss often leads to overeating. It seems counterintuitive--shouldn't I eat less if I'm trying to lose weight?--but here's what happens: every time we break our boundaries and eat too much, we go on a binge. Why? Because we've already broken our boundaries and this is a brilliant opportunity to eat more before we get serious again tomorrow. If we instead just focus on developing healthy habits--like following our boundaries, for example--we'll be less likely to overindulge.
Does that mean we can't go on a diet to lose weight? No, we can still do that if we want. We just need to remember to hold weight loss itself with open hands.
Give Yourself Grace In some ways, this tip is tied to the last tip. If we're holding weight loss with open hands--not feeling like we need to be skinny to be acceptable--we'll be far more likely to give ourselves grace. We beat ourselves up when we feel like we're a total failure. But if life isn't about being skinny (which it's not), then we're not a total failure if we're not skinny! This is just one aspect of who we are.
If you're tempted to beat yourself up after eating too much at a holiday party, come home and do the self-condemnation questions or the regret questions from my I Deserve a Donut app as soon as possible. This will help you avoid that late night binge session. Usually, we haven't even "messed up" as bad as we think we did. We just ate more than usual. It's the late night binge sessions that really contribute to our weight gain.
Take Practical Steps to Stop Overeating We'll be far less likely to overeat if we take some practical steps before we're in that tempting situation. Here are some practical steps you can take to stop overeating before you ever start.
I hope these tips have been helpful. We talk about some other things on the podcast as well to help stop overeating. In fact, you could listen to the podcast on the way to an event where you'll be tempted to overeat!

Do you ever find yourself struggling with your eating boundaries when your normal routine is interrupted? Do you find it difficult to get back to "real life" after coming back from a vacation or a holiday? If so, you'll want to listen to today's episode of the Taste for Truth podcast. I get to talk with Linda, who is a school teacher, about the challenges she faces with her eating during those transitional times in her life.
Types of Transitions We Talk About on the Podcast - when plans change suddenly
from summer break to school or school to summer
from vacation to real life or from real life to vacation
from weight loss to maintenance.
We didn't talk about transitions from one task to another on this podcast, but I find that's another common time for us to break boundaries. For this type of transition, the first step is to be aware of it. It's often caused by procrastination. We don't want to switch to the next activity so we procrastinate. And we often eat to procrastinate! This type of transition eating could be solved by doing the procrastination questions in the I Deserve a Donut app or by asking two questions: 1) Why am I procrastinating, 2) What's the first step? Then focus on the first step.
Tips for Overcoming Transition Eating 1. Plan for Transition.
2. Renew more than usual.
3. Plan some things you like to do for the first 2-3 days of a transition to help ease yourself into it.
4. Remember how much you enjoy life with boundaries.
5. Practice gratitude and let go of entitlement.
6. Make time to think and prepare ahead of time (like putting notifications on your phone to remind you to think about it).
7. Let go of unrealistic expectations (for how perfect you should be by now, for regular life, etc.).
8. Focus on being nourished by God (rather than feeling like you need good food and fun vacations to get your nourishment needs met).

Do you find yourself turning to food when life is stressful? Do you find it hard to recommit to healthy eating after breaking your boundaries over and over again? Did you know that truth journaling is a powerful tool to help with both of these things?
On today's episode of the Taste for Truth podcast, I talk with Stacie, a registered nurse, who has been finding it increasingly difficult to handle all of the recent stress in her life without turning to food. Stacie is new to the idea of the renewing of the mind and truth journaling, so we get to go pretty in-depth on the practical steps of truth journaling.
Lies We Discussed on this Episode 1. Food calms me down after a hard discussion.
Food is a good comforter.
I have no control of my food right now.
Life is so stressful now I can't follow my diet.
I might as well break my boundaries now and start again tomorrow.
This is going to make me feel better.
This is just what I need.

Do you feel overwhelmed when trying to choose weight loss boundaries? Or do you fear that if you choose something as simple as "3 meals a day" for your boundaries, that you won't lose weight? On this episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast, I go over how to use 3 Meals a Day as an effective boundary for losing weight.
How it Works For this set of boundaries to be effective for weight loss, you would need to:
How to Renew As with any set of boundaries, it is important to renew your mind when you break your boundaries. For the 3 Meals Per Day, boundaries, you would need to renew:
If you're still not losing after a couple of weeks, consider adding a 3rd time to renew your mind: every time you find yourself eating as much as possible rather than as little as possible. (Don't try this "as little as possible" idea, though, if you have anorexic tendencies.)
Truth journal or answer a set of questions from I Deserve a Donut or the Renewing of the Mind Project in writing every time you break your boundaries. Here are the examples of truth journaling that I mentioned on the podcast:
If You Don't Find Yourself Losing 1. At the end of the day, think back to what you ate and count calories or points to see if you're eating too much to lose weight. 2. Consider giving up your problem foods altogether (sweets, for example) or limiting them in some way. I discuss several ways to limit them on the podcast.
Are you someone who doesn’t know how to deal with negative emotions in a positive way? Do you find alcohol numbing and emotional eating attractive when you’re under stress? If you’re finding it difficult to handle stress and worry, join this episode and be inspired as Jana shares her journey to losing 82 pounds on Weight Watchers.
Jana has been amazing with keeping it up with her weight loss program for six years. Admitted to having had an alcohol and binge drinking problem to numb emotional pain, she surrendered her life to God, and through the Holy Spirit’s conviction, her alcohol addiction had rapidly left. However, having that removed, all of a sudden, her habit of drinking away the pain has morphed into binge eating. As her weight skyrocketed, she got introduced to a weight-loss program called Weight Watchers which began her weight-loss journey.
Things We Talked About: * How Jana had the opportunity to put an end to her binge drinking and alcoholism by accepting the Holy Spirit into her life * What Jana did when she gained the weight back to lose it again * Dealing with alcoholism and emotional eating * How Jana deals with stress * Lies that Jana commonly believe in * How Jana handles a negative emotion * Is Jana still struggling to turn to food during stressful times? * Does Jana still follow the Weight Watchers boundaries for maintenance? * Jana’s advice to someone like her way back years ago

When I ask women what time of day they most often break their boundaries, I usually get one of two answers: either mid-afternoon or evening. Since I've already done a couple of podcast episodes on how to end evening eating, today I'd like to talk about how to stop overeating in the afternoon. Let's begin by looking at why this is a tempting time of day.
Who struggles with afternoon eating? While anyone can struggle with overeating in the afternoon, here are the most common groups of people:
I think the reason these groups struggle the most is because we're actually at home in the afternoon! Chances are good that people who work outside the home would love to start eating at 3:00 in the afternoon but their jobs prevent them from eating at that time. Although if you often pop down to the vending machine at work or in your college dorm around 3:00 in the afternoon, you know the struggle to stop overeating in the afternoon.
Why do we feel like breaking boundaries in the afternoon? If we want to stop overeating in the afternoon, we need to first find out why we're tempted to eat in the afternoon. This will be different for everyone, and also different on each day of the week. You may find that you eat for all of the following reasons. Let's take a look at some of the reasons we're inclined to overeat in the afternoon.
How do we stop overeating in the afternoon? Now that we've seen the reasons for afternoon eating, let's look at some solutions that will help us stop overeating.
I hope these tips have given you some ideas of what to do when you feel like breaking boundaries in the afternoon. The next time you feel that way, begin by asking, "Why do I feel like breaking my boundaries?" Then look at the list above for suggestions on how to get back on track.

It's that time of year again. When we throw caution to the wind and break our weight loss boundaries left and right eating Christmas cookies and other goodies!
On today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast, I do a coaching call with Judy and Amy about how to follow weight loss boundaries during the holidays.
Amy and Judy have been working through the Taste for Truth Bible study, and they have both been losing weight. Amy has lost 10 pounds so far and Judy has lost 22 pounds!
I hope today's podcast will help you as we head into this holiday season.
Here are a few of the lies we'll be covering that make us eat too much:
Lies That Make Us Eat Too Much Over the Holidays 1. I don't like being left out (during holiday parties so I need to eat like everyone else). 2. If everyone is snitching cookies, I want to have my fair share. 3. I need to eat this when no one is looking. 4. It's the holidays. I'm going to indulge a little bit. 5. It only happens once a year (so I need to live it up!). 6. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. 7. That's so good, I should have another. 8. I'll just have one more.
We'll get to these lies at about the 8 or 10-minute mark. At the beginning of the podcast, we'll be talking about making Christmas cookies and how to do that without eating too much.

This is a podcast episode I've been wanting to do for a long time. I guess it's appropriate that I finally made the commitment to do it after publishing my new Freedom from Procrastination Bible Study!
In the podcast, I'll share my own weight loss journey and how God set me free from the control of food. Overeating and weight gain was an issue in my life from the time I was in high school until I was writing my first book, Freedom from Emotional Eating, in 2006.
I published that book in 2008 and at the time I worried I would gain my weight back and be embarrassed that I had written a book on how to gain freedom from Emotional Eating! I didn't realized that I ate for procrastination and whenever I set out to write, I felt like procrastinating! It was disconcerting to be writing on weight loss and feeling like breaking boundaries while writing.
Thankfully, God has kept me on the straight and narrow and I have continued to live free from the control of food. I've found that it's a much more peaceful way to live and -- surprisingly -- a more fun way to live! Overeating may be fun in the moment but eating with control leads to a much more fun life.
It's take me hundreds of truth journal entries to break free from the control of food, but that freedom has been long-lasting. If you'd like to hear more about my journey and how God set me free, listen to today's podcast episode.
Do you find that it's hard to get back on track after vacation with your weight loss boundaries? Even if you followed your boundaries while you're gone, it's often hard to follow them when you get home.
Not only are we tired and in catch-up land with all the work that piled up, but we also often find ourselves feeling sad when we get back. We miss vacation--or if things went badly on vacation, we're sad about what happened.
Thankfully, God can help us recover from the post-vacation blues and help us to follow our boundaries. On this podcast, we'll talk about 7 things we can do to get back on track after vacation.

You know what it's like. You finish dinner, clean up the dishes, and sit down to relax. That's when the cookies start calling your name. Or the ice cream. Or the chips. It's hard to say no to their insistent voices because you're tired of saying no all day. In today's podcast, Kimberly Taylor will give us some help with saying no and overcoming night eating.
Kim blogs at takebackyourtemple.com and she recently did a session on overcoming night eating with her blog members. She asked everyone why they ate at night and came up with three groups of people:
Soothers. The soothers eat to ease their emotions. They may be stressed, lonely, or emotionally distraught in some other way and eating makes them feel better.
Sleepy Eaters. Sleepy eaters eat because they're tired and feel like they need a little pick-me-up to make it through the night.
Social Eaters. Social eaters eat because their spouses or kids or friends are eating and they want to join in the fun.
Kimberly tells us that what we really need to do if we want to overcome night eating is to ask the question, "What do I need?" then listen for the answer. Usually the answer won't be food!
On the podcast, Kim gives lots of examples and practical tips for each of these groups of nighttime eaters.
One of the beliefs that keeps us from losing weight is the belief that we should be able to eat “what we want when we want.” The truth is, we can eat “what we want when we want.” We just don’t lose weight when we do that! In today’s podcast, we’ll talk about how to break free from entitlement eating so we can lose weight and keep it off. This is a replay of a recent Zoom chat.

In today's Taste for Truth Podcast interview, Stacey shares how God helped her to lose 150 pounds through the renewing of her mind using Bright Line Eating boundaries.
Bright Line Eating is a program where you give up addictive foods, such as sugar, and plan out what you're going to eat each day.

Do you ever feel like it’s too hard to follow your boundaries? Maybe you had a hard day at work or you’ve been going through a rough time in your life. Or maybe you’ve been surrounded by tasty treats that are hard to resist. Or maybe you just have strict boundaries that can be hard to follow at times.
We’re often tempted to throw in the towel and give up on our boundaries in those situations—or at the very least, change our boundaries so they’re easier to follow.
In today’s coaching interview with Leigh on the Taste for Truth Podcast, we’ll discuss some of the things that make us want to give up in those situations. Here are a few of the topics we’ll be covering:

We'll also talk about what you can do to get back on track after an evening of failure. We’ll gear the discussion toward weight loss, but the following tips can be applied to breaking any habit.

So often we think of the long-term benefits of following our eating boundaries, but we completely ignore the short-term benefits. That's because we're too busy focused on the short-term disadvantages--not being able to eat those out-of-the-boundary treats!
In today's quick tip episode we'll talk about the short-term benefits of following our boundaries.

Chances are, if you're listening to this podcast, you know what it's like to be unhappy with your body. But there's a difference between wishing we could lose a few (or maybe a lot of) pounds and feeling like we have to lose those pounds.
When we feel like we have to lose weight to be acceptable, not only do we have a hard time losing it (because we eat in despair whenever we break our boundaries), but we also miss out on a lot of peace, joy, contentment, and even fellowship with God as we go to Him for help with transformation.
In today's episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast, I share an interview I did two years ago with Debbie, who had just finished doing a renewing of the mind project on learning how to accept her body in its as is condition.
We'll discuss how she learned to accept her body as is and also how she learned to let go of her feelings of anger towards God for having to struggle with weight all her life. We'll also talk about letting go of people pleasing.
I hope you'll join us for today's episode of the podcast!

We'll discuss the following questions from listeners in this episode of the Taste for Truth Podcast:
Things I forgot to say on the podcast:
Whenever I do a podcast like this, I often think of things I should have said afterward, but it's too hard to go back in and retape it to include those things--so when that happens (and it will only happen on podcasts that I do myself rather than interviews), I'll include that info on the blog post!
I realized afterward that I might not have fully answered Karina's question. The way you get to the bottom line lie is to keep journaling about the same things over and over again - the more you renew your mind about them, the more the lies will be revealed.
Here's an example: In Taste for Truth Bible Study, I ask people to do the "I'll Start Tomorrow" questions probably 4 or 5 times in a week-long period. One woman told me that the assignment really annoyed her, but she did it, and every time she answered the questions God seemed to give her a new layer of truth, revealing more insights.
I also find that sometimes when I'm truth journaling, God will reveal another lie I believe while I'm journaling the truth. When He does that, I just write it down and journal the truth for that lie as well. In those situations, I don't realize I'm believing that lie until halfway through the journaling process.
I also wanted to mention that I also stop podcasts when I'm listening to them and someone shares an insight that's helpful to me. So for example, when I was listening to the podcast I mentioned on today's episode, I stopped the podcast and thought about how those insights from Peter related to weight loss and also to my own life in the things I want to change and talked to God about that for a bit. When I was through, I turned the podcast back on and continued listening. I might have paused it 3 or 4 times during the podcast to talk to God.
So anyway, I hope those things are helpful. I'll be doing another Ask Barb Podcast on November 1st to finish up the questions from this podcast, so let me know if you have any questions by emailing me through the contact tab at barbraveling.com.
Update: Just wanted to let you guys know I listened to the interview with Peter Shankman again the other day and wanted to encourage you to listen to it as well. I really think it's helpful for weight loss as well even though the podcast is on productivity!

Are you an all or nothing eater? Either completely on the plan or--the minute you break it--completely off the plan? Many of us struggle with black and white thinking with both our exercise and weight loss plans.

Brandice is a nutrition coach and blogger at Grace Filled Plate. She teaches women how to ditch diets and restriction and find peace with food through God's grace. Grace that then overflows into a healthy lifestyle.

Finally, she tried Cathy Morenzie's Weight Loss God's Way program and learned the tools she need to break free from the control of food. In this podcast, she'll be discussing what got her to give her weight to God and find victory.

When Micah was 23, he was told that he had sleep apnea and would have to be on a breathing machine for the rest of his life. He weighed 242 pounds at the time and thought it would be worth a try to see if losing weight would help. He didn't want to be on a breathing machine for the rest of his life.
Over the course of the next year, Micah lost 72 pounds through changing his eating habits and adding exercise into his life. This enabled him to get off the breathing machine, and he's kept the weight off for the last eight years. In this interview we'll talk to Micah and find out more about his journey.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could follow your weight loss boundaries perfectly without ever breaking them? Unfortunately, most of us can't. Sooner or later we break them. When that happens, the temptation is to say, "I already broke my boundaries! Might as well keep eating!" Then we look around and often start eating everything we can get our hands on.
If you find yourself in this position, use the Failure Eating questions and Bible verses from I Deserve a Donut (And Other Lies That Make You Eat) on this episode of the podcast to renew your mind. They'll help you to actually want to get back on track with your boundaries!
