In this episode, educators Erin, Fred, and Pete delve into the challenges faced by both educators and students during the notorious month of March. As March rolls around, maintaining focus and motivation becomes increasingly difficult with the anticipation of Spring Break followed by the impending testing season and the long stretch before summer vacation.

To shed light on strategies for navigating this challenging period, the hosts engage in a survival scenario game, drawing on insights from Mark Wanvig, a former instructor in survival training for the Reconnaissance School of the 101st Division of the U.S. Army. Currently conducting wilderness survival training programs in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Wanvig's expertise lends a unique perspective to the discussion.

The survival simulation game, commonly utilized in military training classrooms, provides a framework for evaluating essential items for enduring challenging circumstances. By applying this framework to the context of education, the hosts offer practical insights into prioritizing tasks, managing stress, and fostering resilience during the demanding March period.

Our friend, Heidi von Marbod, from the Cheney School District came back to visit and share with us more tips and lifts for supporting student transitions into the community and vocational opportunities. Heidi is a leader in supporting special education students who typically have an IEP due to a developmental disability. Students ceremoniously walk across the graduation stage with their peers and then continue for another 2-3 years.

Her particular transition program is unique in that it is a standalone program in her district which is within the bus line.

We discussed best practices which include:

  • Community Inclusion
  • Vocational Experience
  • Soft Skill Development
  • Job Coaching
  • Business Partnerships
  • Resources for State Agencies

It was so nice to have Heidi come back. We are so excited to hear how her and her team continue to support all students in life "after the yellow bus".

We invited Dr. Jeannine Jannot, a parent, former school psychologist, and author, to come back and talk to us about ways we (EVERYONE) can support a balanced student. Dr. Jannot wrote the book The Disintegrating Student : Struggling But Smart, Falling Apart, & How to Turn It Around to discuss the very recognizable patterns seen in students who were falling apart in a very high-stakes, rigorous educational environment. Now, she is focusing on supporting parents and guardians by rethinking stress and even parenting. We discuss the importance of having both parent and child identify their core values and build a system of trust and connection between parents, teacher, and student.

Dr. Jannot will be holding a webinar called "Parenting Reimagined" this week on November 14, 2023. For more details, please visit her website. This is a FREE event.

Our friends from i-Tech came back to share with us the latest trends and challenges in educational technology. Join our conversation with Director of Educational Technology, Evelyn McCulloch and Educational Design & Strategy Lead, Mike Rinyu.

We spend a good bit of time talking about AI and how it is not going anywhere, so we need to find the best way to utilize it. Some examples that Evelyn and Mike shared with us were using tools like Eduaide for creating 504s, designing lesson plans and rubrics. If you are interested in learning more about AI in education, please visit the i-Tech Support webpage. Mike also shares with us, in this episode, some great programs to gain certification in leading AI in education.

Our guests remind us that although AI and educational technology are great tools to aid in learning, our real education is not the lesson learned but the people who care about you. Educators teach our students to be who they want to be in this world. This includes being a good digital citizen. We talk about ways we can encourage good cyber hygiene and ethics in this modern digital work.
