This podcast is for and about African Americans seeking assistance and those who provide it. We discuss what Black America Cares is doing, but our focus is showcasing Black-Owned nonprofits and businesses. This is the only platform that gives Nonprofit Leaders and Business Owners who do community outreach an opportunity to share what they're doing and how they're making an impact in economically challenged communities.
We also help listeners discover the information they need, so they can get the assistance they need. Do you need money to start a business or to pay your rent? Need job training? There's thousands of organizations that offer these services and more, but we know nothing about them. We're here to change that. Miriam Rhoden-Shedden has been an attorney since December 2016. She is barred in Jamaica, Vermont, and Maryland and will be starting the process of becoming barred in DC in February 2024. Since 2022, she has handled family law cases and recently started handling landlord and tenant matters.
She firmly believes that knowledge is power and it is her objective, as well as mine, to impart as much information as I can so people are empowered.

Ep. #70 - Kids driving you crazy? Trust and believe you are not alone!
I normally talk about nonprofit organizations or businesses but someone posted something on FB about how she and her children (adult children) were relating.
The topic hit home for a lot of people so we decided to have a conversation about it. I'm speaking with Romona Williams who's a single mother, and Tony Nix, a single Black dad. The purpose of this episode is to discuss how we can best relate to our children in a way that they'll hear our hearts. Yes...they'll be a little venting too, after all, we're only human, but we want to find solutions that will benefit both us and our kids.

Ep. #68 – Robert Cradle is the Founder of Rob’s Barbershop Community Foundation. Rob started out as an owner of a barbershop in Odenton, Maryland. In fact, he was the first Black man to open a barbershop in that area. As the shop grew into a successful establishment, Rob discovered there was a homeless shelter close by with individuals who couldn’t afford his services. So he decided to use his shop as the groundwork to build a community friendly human service organization.
Rob eventually closed his shop and focused his efforts on starting an organization that would allow him to expand his dedication to serving the community. He works with clients of residential, transitional, emergency housing facilities and public schools and builds barbershops and hair salons in their facility. He also builds dog grooming stations.

Ep. #67 – If you're Black, have you ever been to Yellowstone Park? Do you even know about it? Taylor Bland is a Conservation Nation Fellow. (You’ll have to listen to this episode to learn what that is). As a Black woman in a White-male dominated field, she wants to give people from underrepresented communities someone to look up to, and go to if they need a pathway into this industry. Taylor is dedicated to helping wolves in Yellowstone National Park in Montana. She started out volunteering for the Wolf Project, but is now getting paid to do what she loves.
As a Technician for the Yellowstone Wolf Project and Conservation Nation Fellow, Taylor conducts public outreach and education, tracking and monitoring wolf packs, observing wolf behaviors and helping park visitors see wolves. She is definitely a role model and mentor to younger people who are interested in a career in conversation.

Ep. #45 - Mississippi Center for Re-Entry (MS Reentry), formerly known as Mississippi Justice Center; was founded by Cynetra Freeman, who faced a 3 year minimum mandatory sentence for Trafficking Heron (Heroin) in 2010. While incarcerated, she helped her public defender fight her case and on top of that, she lost her job, home, car and personal valuables due to the length of time she was incarcerated. After her case was resolved and she was released from jail, Cynetra quickly realized the importance of having post-release services available. She was able to find her way and reestablished herself back into her community after one year. She is now using her life lessons and passion to serve, to help others reestablish their lives too.

Ep. #33 - As a child Nahdiyah, Founder of Divine Touch House of Healing Inc. (DTHH) watched her father attempt to break his addiction. Growing up in Bronx NY, she experienced a childhood of survival. Soon after her father overcoming his habit, he was dealt another bad hand and lost his life to AIDS. His journey and life inspired her to fulfill her passion to help heal functional adults of substance abuse and those battling mental health issues. She is a Certified Reiki Practitioner, as well as a Certified Meditation Practitioner, and is currently taking a course to become a Certified Group Coach, so she can be hands on with her patients in the facility. Nahdiyah knows that her facility will function as a place for individuals ready for intense internal healing.

Ep. #32 – Chef Rory Vigne (pronounced Veene) cooked meals that resulted in him losing 168lbs! Rory started his fat loss journey in March 2018. His starting weight was 366lbs and he’s now down to 198lbs. He’s offering the same healthy meals through his meal prep business, called Chef’s Fit Meal Prep. His services are available in the Dallas-Fort Worth Texas area but I’m hoping he expands his business and makes them available nation-wide! In this episode we talk about what he did to lose the weight. I ask him what he ate, if he exercised and I inquired about everything he did to accomplish this outstanding goal. He gladly shares his success story, gives a few tips, and even shares a recipe. He also plans to start a nonprofit that will introduce kids to the culinary arts. On a side note, Rory appeared as an extra in the movie “Texas Kill City” that will be airing on Netflix next year, so stay tuned for that.

Ep. #30 - With his mother being in prison, and him not knowing his father, Byron, was raised by his, great-grandparents. Statistics would say that by the age of 18, he would either be dead or in jail, but God had other plans.
In 2013 he Graduated from Cody Academy of Public leadership in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Ohio. After a couple years he moved back to Detroit at the request of his mother but due to certain internal conflicts, he was given an ultimatum, either go to church and school or get a job at a warehouse if he wanted to stay with her. Byron chose church and school, which meant he had to leave. In mid 2015 he became homeless, but he continued his education and maintained a 3.5 GPA all while sleeping in parks, abandoned buildings, bus stops, and eventually a car. His Godparents were made aware of his situation and between the efforts of them and their church, Byron was blessed to get an apartment in January of 2017.

Ep. #28 - Tio Hardiman is the Executive Director for Violence Interrupters. He has dedicated his life and career to community organizing for peace and social change. In 1999, Mr. Hardiman joined CeaseFire, an award-winning public health model that has been scientifically proven to reduce shootings and killings. In 2004, Tio created the Violence Interrupters Initiative. Under his direction, CeaseFire received additional funding from the State of Illinois to immediately expand from 5 to 15 communities and from 20 to 130 Outreach Workers and Violence Interrupters. The Violence Interrupters are a specialty unit of violence intervention experts that work to mediate conflict on the “front-end.” In other words, they speak directly with the youth so-called gang leaders to try to get them to resolve their conflict. The Violence Interrupters’ reputation and connections in the community provide them access to leaders and influential decision makers in street organizations.
Today, the Violence Interrupters Model has been replicated in 15 Chicago communities, 7 cities in Illinois, 15 cities nationwide, England, Iraq, and South Africa. In addition, more than 30 cities and 20 nations concerned about their own levels of shootings and killings have expressed interest in learning more about the Violence Interrupters.

Ep. #27 - For #UnderHer co-founder and executive director Shaye Brooks, the organization’s "we could have been her" tagline is personal. Like many women in the Washington, D.C. area, at one point the divorced mother of four found herself struggling with poverty and adversity. Brooks co-founded with her daughters Emiya, and Ayana in 2017, when they became aware of how difficult it was for girls and women to receive basic personal necessities. One in three women in the United States lives in poverty and many of them are single mothers. For these women, affording personal care products when food and shelter are scarce can be challenging and can lead to embarrassing situations. The matter became personal for them after helping a young woman in need with housing, feminine care resources and high school support. Brooks has participated in many grassroots initiatives and programs that work to lift up young women and girls, instilling dignity and respect. She volunteers with local nonprofit organizations and recently served as a surrogate foster mother for her teenage daughter’s best friend. The experience of fostering a child provided the inspiration to help and serve more young women and girls in need and led to Brooks, with her daughters, to found #UnderHer.

Ep. 26 – Tracy Stanton’s story is one of triumph and perseverance. It serves as a reminder of the importance of knowing someone’s struggle before passing judgement on them. Far too often, we’re quick to look down on or have a negative view of someone because they’re an alcoholic or a crack addict. The reality is, we don’t know what they endured that caused them to turn to drinking or using drugs. Tracy explains how her journey through crack addiction, prostitution and ending up in prison actually helped her become the successful person we see today. She shares how nonprofits and other organizations helped her heal from pains of the past. Now that she’s mentally, spiritually and emotionally strong, Tracy aims to inspire and empower people to reach their highest potential through her lived experience. She made a drastic transition from substance use to SLU student, program facilitator with the Institute for Peace and Justice, presenter with the Clark-Fox Family Foundation, and a 2019 Center for Women in Transition Award winner and Board Member. She’s also a spoken-word poet, activist, and all-around amazing woman! She says her duty and purpose is to aid and assist others in their transition from Addiction to Ambition.

Ep. #25 – There are NO Excuses!! Jacques Lofton is the Founder and President of Lizzie Foundation. She’s also a single Mother of three, she currently works full time and she also has a few other small businesses. She calls herself a Mompreneur.
Jacques started Lizzie Foundation in honor of her late Grandmother who passed away from Thyroid Cancer in 2009. She decided to carry on her legacy and great spirit of helping others when feel they can’t make it alone. But what really caught my attention about her story is she served time in prison. Like so many of us in the Black community, she got caught up in the drug game, but instead of allowing her circumstances to dictate her future, she changed her choices and became a social change agent. Her life is yet another testament of what determination and beating the odds can accomplish.
Like many of us, she struggled as a single Mother and understands the daily challenges that can happen with just not having enough, so she decided to help mothers and fathers during times of high stress which is typically around back to school time and the holidays. She noticed how others would reach out to her for help during those times and she knew exactly what that felt like. You can hear Jacques’ passion and energetic spirit as she shares her inspirational story. I should mention that she also does credit repair! Ep. #23 – This is one of our most intriguing episodes. The founder of “Her Choice Advocacy”, LaKeisha Thomas started this organization to advocate for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, human trafficking, and sexual assault conception. Can you imagine conceiving a child from after being raped? Many of us never consider that. Her website says, “When a women discovers she hasconceived from a sexual assault, she should be able to choose to parent her child without judgement, or prosecution of her unborn child that are derived from perceived notions chained to the rapist. The mother and child need society and laws to protect them, whether the mother chooses abortion, adoption or to parent the child, she should be free to make decisions without interference or influence from the perpetrator. These families deserve social inclusion, respect, dignity and honor." I completely agree. It’s HER CHOICE and we should respect that. I learned a lot from this interview as I’m sure you will too.

Ep. #22 - Andre Jackson is our third guest in our COVID-19 Survivor Series. SEVEN members of his family (including him) all contracted COVID-19 and everyone survived! Andre was born and raised in Washington, DC. I was excited to learn that like me, he attended Cardozo High School. (Shout out to Cardozo Alumni!) He’s been married for 21 years, he’s a teacher, he sings with a local band, “Sudden M-Pac” and he’s sang with the former lead singer of the Temptations, Glenn Leonard & his Temptations Revue! Andre has also toured all over the world with the Temptations Revue in places like Germany, France, and Australia, and of course all over the United States! His career is both intriguing and exciting. In this episode we talk a little about what it’s like to be a teacher during these times, and how it feels when teaching and learning is no longer in a classroom. But the real story is how a night out with the family ended up being the same night when everyone was infected with the coronavirus. Andre tells us about his initial symptoms, testing, and what led him to go to the hospital. Ep. #21 - House of Freedom, located in Boynton, Oklahoma, has been helping veterans experiencing hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness in the community from the beginning. This organization was built on faith. Since starting, they’ve demonstrated a steadfast grit and grind to help others in their crisis. House of Freedom is the only non-profit dedicated to homeless men in this area. The House of Freedom has held to their original purpose of providing food, shelter, independence, and sustainability. But it was an instruction from God to the founder, Kevin Jackson that makes this podcast episode so unique and powerful. Kevin says he heard God tell him to give ALL of the nonprofit’s money to the church. After ensuring that he had indeed heard God correctly he shared this with his board members and by faith, he obeyed. After a few weeks Pastor Michael Todd, the Pastor of Transformation Church blessed Kevin with an unexpected miracle and proved that when God speaks and we obey, He’ll bless us in ways we could never imagine. Kevin says he had no idea this would happen. All he did was obey. I have a similar testimony when I trusted what God told me to do and I received a HUGE blessing in return as well. We don’t “give to get”. We simply hear God, trust and obey and things just happen. It’s kind of difficult to explain all of this. You have to experience it to really understand it. As Kevin shares about the great things he’s doing to serve our communities, I also hope you hear from God in a way you’ve never heard Him before. Ep. #20 – Lady Nicole Osborne is our second survivor in our COVID-19 Survivor Series. As with everyone diagnosed with this illness, her symptoms were very different. Nicole noticed something was wrong when she burned her Easter dinner. It burned because she couldn’t smell it. She also describes how she felt very tired. Nicole has asthma which can be deadly for a person with coronavirus but fortunately for her, the disease didn’t attack her body as much as it has others. Another challenge was making sure the virus didn’t spread to her husband or any of their four children. She explains how after being tested, the doctors discharged her but advised her to stop and pick up a prescription. Upon release, she wasn’t given a mask, nor gloves, nor did she know the test results. If she was positive, (which it was later determined she was) she could’ve have easily spread it to customers in the store as well as her family. Thankfully Nicole was smart and took the initiative to protect her household. Her story is an example of why this disease is spreading so rapidly in our communities. Imagine the number of people who get tested and are told to leave. Some use public transportation and have to make stops at the grocery store or pharmacy, and they may have other family members at home. By the time you’re told you have it, you’ve unknowingly spread it to who knows how many people. Nicole talks about the challenges of staying safe and even having to live in a hotel while waiting for housing. In spite of the difficulties, she made it, and no one else in her family caught it. Ep. 11 – The Intentional Spreading of Coronavirus - This podcast episode is different because I’m not talking about nonprofits. This episode is about something I experienced while at the grocery store in a predominately Black and Hispanic neighborhood in a suburb of Washington, DC. An article from Black America Web states “ White supremacists are encouraging members who contract novel coronavirus to spread the contagion to Blacks, cops and Jews, according to the FBI.
In a February intelligence brief obtained by ABC News, the FBI’s New York office reports that “members of extremist groups are encouraging one another to spread the virus, if contracted, through bodily fluids and personal interactions.”” Listen as I share what happened.

Ep. #10 - Tasha White is the Founder of “My Walk With MG”. She created this organization to spread more awareness about a condition she lives with, Myasthenia Gravis (MG). MG is a neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles and the condition itself is typically caused by an autoimmune disorder. In this episode, Tasha shares about her journey as she deals with this illness. You’ll also learn how others with MG can connect with her and the community she’s built through her nonprofit.

Ep. #9 -- After experiencing violence at the hands of someone who was supposed to love her, she battled fear, guilt and shame until she couldn’t handle it anymore. April Jackson-Hunter is a survivor of domestic violence and the founder of “Mercedes Closet”, a nonprofit geared toward offering support and resources for victims of domestic/partner violence in the LGBTQ community. Ep. #8 - Collin Siddell is just 17-yrs old, and is already doing things in his community that helps change young lives. He started a nonprofit called “A Diamond In The Rough” that grew out of his passion to help kids understand things he didn’t necessarily know or understand while growing up. His program teaches entrepreneurship and financial literacy to children in the 3rd – 5th grade. At an age when most young men his age are spending money on sneakers and clothes, Collin is using his money to fund his organization. He also invites local business owners to his classrooms to share their experiences and expertise with the kids in his program. Collin’s passion and true desire to help youth is demonstrated not only through his words, but through his actions. He’s helping to fulfill his dream as he helps young kids discover theirs.

Ep. #7 - Darrell Anderson’s story takes you from trial to triumph! He’s been homeless, had a felony, and struggled to make ends meet for a long time. However, he was blessed to meet not one man but two men who would be his mentors and help change his destiny. One mentor helped him open a successful barbershop. After doing that for a while and still feeling as though something were missing, Darrell happened to be at a church fish fry and he wanted some hot sauce for his fish. The man he asked “happened” to have a special recipe for making hot sauce and eventually partnered with Darrell. Together they created “Chef Joseph’s Kick Sauce”. Darrell also gives back to the community by offering workshops and seminars that help others learn how to take their recipes and learn how to market them. Ep. #6 - Divine Inspiration Inc's Founder & Executive Director Mrs. Capriece Piper is a long time advocate for the at risk, underprivileged, and youth fighting childhood obesity. The concept of our organization was born from her natural passion for the arts and the desire to participate in dance and arts programs as a child but did not have the means or access to those opportunities.
Now she like many parents, want nothing more than to give our children all the possible opportunities the world can offer but many times those opportunities come at a hefty price tag. From the cost associated with extensive dance training, costume/recital fees, dance supplies, private lessons, travel cost, and that's just to name a few... one thing is certain; the arts can be expensive but with the launching of Divine Inspirations Center for the Arts - Home of Divine Dance Company we are making the arts affordable and accessible to all!

Ep. #5 - This podcast will not only help showcase and share about other nonprofits and what they're doing, we're going to talk to and about our clients. Danielle was going through a really tough time. We knew she needed help with getting groceries, but we weren't aware that her electricity had been disconnected too. She is a single mom and an example of someone who works but still struggles to make ends meet. Like many she doesn't earn enough to pay everything that needs to be paid each month, but makes too much to qualify for food stamps. Thankfully we were able to help her. Our goal is to not only help people through a financial crisis, but to also help them find more permanent solutions so they'll never need assistance again. In this episode Danielle talks about talks about her challenges, as well as some of her talents. We also talk about upcoming workshops where the community will learn ways to build themselves up.

Ep. #4 - Sistas United Inc. was founded by Wessita McKinley. Wessita is a mom, a Veteran of the United States Air Force; a community organizer and founder of Sistas United, Inc. which is a community based 501c3 nonprofit organization. With a passion to give back and love for all mankind, Sistas United offers a variety of services ranging from a free food pantry as well as an infant exchange program to help mothers in need of baby items. Sistas United, Inc. was created to serve, inform, educate, motivate, and empower women, men & youth all over the world.
Ep. #3 - In one year, Darlene Lewis, the founder of Lewis Burnett Employment Finders helped 2000 ex-felons find employment. Ms. Lewis runs an organization dedicated to helping former inmates find jobs, preparation for interviews, and she advocates for them in court. This dynamic organization is based in Arkansas but Ms. Lewis will go whereever she's needed. She started Lewis Burnett Employment Finders when her son, who spent a short time in prison had trouble finding a job when we came home. She believes her son, like many of the men and women who've had this issue in their background are still good people. They made a mistake and shouldn't be penalized for the rest of their lives.
Many come home to nothing, and often have to resort back to the same activity that got them in trouble in the first place. For many, it's about survival. Ms. Lewis is putting an end to that. "If someone doesn't step up to help them, they're going back to prison," she passionately explains. She believes God has given her this assignment and even with health challenges she refuses to quit. If she can keep going, so can a former inmate. You can contact Ms. Lewis on their Facebook page. She's currently seeking assistance with getting a website and office space.
Ep. #2 - Angela Howze, is a Financial Aid Strategist and Student Loan Expert. She believes that empowering communities with financial stability will provie Mississippi with a stronger level playing field for economic growth. As a result this, the Financial Literacy Institute, Inc, a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization was established. In this episode, Angela explains how her organization helps people understand more about finances and also how her "for-profit" organization helps people who are struggling with student loan debt.
Angela is passionate about student loan debt and it's impact on borrower's lack of economic growth. Her newest book, "Breaking Free From Financial Aid Prison", was written to improve financial health for student loan borrowers and is due to be released on 04/2020.
After starting this nonprofit, and going to various events, fundraisers, trainings & meetings I've discovered that there are thousands of organizations that's helping people that many of us don't know about. Sometimes we may luck up and find something through searching on Google but if the nonprofit doesn't come up, we'll miss it.
