A special episode of Live From My Drum Room remembering Music Industry icon and Artist Relations pioneer, Lennie DiMuzio! Lennie is best known for his 40+ years working at Zildjian, most notably in Artist Relations, as well as other key roles, and John is joined by Lennie’s daughter, Therese DiMuzio, and old friends and Zildjian alumni Colin Schofield, Jerry Donegan, Paul Francis, John Sorenson and Bill Morgan, along with Rob Wallis of Hudson Music, DCI Video and Drummers Collective. The group shared stories about Lennie during their time working at Zildjian, many involving Lennie's storied friendship with the legendary Armand Zildjian. The recurring theme throughout the episode is how much Lennie loved working in the Drum Industry and with drummers, and how much he was loved by everyone who ever met him. They also talk about Lennie’s hilarious memoir, “Tales From The Cymbal Bag” which is still available through Amazon.com. Lennie passed away in March 2015. John and Gary go back to Gary’s early years studying classical piano and his transition to drums. John is joined by a distinguished panel of legendary and highly respected drummers to remember their friend and world renowned drummer and educator, Pete Zeldman. Pete was a longtime faculty member of the renown Drummers Collective in New York. Jeff “Tain” Watts, Kenwood Dennard, Rob Wallis, Jason Gianni, Tobias Ralph, Andy Sanesi and Cherie Dennard shared wonderful and touching stories about Pete, as well as comments on behalf of legendary drummers and friends, Vinnie Colaiuta and Bob Moses, who were unable to join due to scheduling conflicts. He was voted #1 Studio Drummer in the Modern Drummer Readers Poll in 2016, 2019, and 2021. John and Tris do a deep dive into Tris’ incredible and prolific career, going back to his first band that was signed to a record deal “Honk” over 50 years ago, to Tris joining Kenny Loggins’ band in the late 1970s and the string of Kenny Loggins hits he played on. His work as a session drummer, joining the legendary band “Chicago”in 1990 where he held the drum chair for almost 30 years, before retiring from the band in 2018. John and Paul discuss their long history and share stories of their time working together at Zildjian, including remembering their friend and mentor, the great Armand Zildjian. Paul talks about his early years of developing cymbal ideas with legendary drummers like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jeff Hamilton and Adam Nussbaum, and honing his skills into becoming a highly respected, master cymbal maker and head of Research & Design at Zildjian where he worked for 32 years. Paul has since launched his own boutique cymbal company, “Cymbal Craftsman” hand crafted cymbals, available at independent US drum shops such as Steve Maxwell’s in Chicago, Drum Center of Portsmouth, Memphis Drum, Columbus Pro Percussion, Good Hands in NYC and Round Sound in Oakland. He offers a variety of services, from custom/hand made cymbals, to modifying and reworking existing cymbals. Joining John is a legendary group of Jeff’s friends and contemporaries and a literal “who’s who” of the drumming community, including Jim Keltner, Vinnie Colaiuta, John Robinson, Rick Marotta, Stan Lynch, Gregg Bissonette, Gary Mallaber, Jody Cortez, David Garfield, John Good, Rich Mangicaro, Robyn Flans, Harry McCarthy, Ross Garfield and Paul Jamieson. They discussed Jeff’s incomparable body of work, his incredible time and feel, and the deep love and respect he had from everyone. John also read messages from Jeff’s brother, Steve Porcaro, “Toto" keyboardist and co-founder, David Paich, and legendary session bassist, Bob Glaub. Some heartwarming and funny stories were shared by all, with the common thread being Jeff’s sense of humor, and his incredible generosity, both as a musician, and as a person.
Originally aired live on March 16, 2021. John chats with two of his best pals and incredible drummers, Myron Grombacher and Gregg Bissonette! Myron talks about playing with Rick Derringer before joining the Pat Benatar Band, his iconic drum sets and the early days of MTV. Gregg and Myron shared some funny stories about their long friendship and the great Mark Craney. This one was extra special for me because I love these two guys so much!
John’s guest is drummer, producer, songwriter, and original drummer for "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers," Stan Lynch. Stan discussed reuniting with his longtime friend and Heartbreakers bandmate, guitarist extraordinaire Mike Campbell, and his recent tour with Mike’s band, "The Dirty Knobs.” Stan shared some stories from the tour, and how it felt to be touring and playing with Mike again after 30 years. John and Stan did a deep dive into tempos, playing comfortably and the importance of songs having a natural pulse. Stan talked about joining Dixon Drums and using them on tour, about his other projects, “The Speaker Wars” and “The Chefs” and much more!
John’s guest is the legendary Jeff Hamilton! In this episode Jeff talks about his early drumming influences, attending Indiana University and studying with the great John Von Ohlen, joining Woody Herman’s band in 1977 at age 23, and being invited by Ray Brown to join The L.A. Four in 1978 and relocating to Los Angeles, where Jeff established himself as one of the most versatile and sought after drummers. Jeff shared insights on his ride cymbal beat, brush playing, his approach to achieving his organic drum sound, his equipment and developing the products he uses and endorses. John and Jeff also talked about their history going back over 30 years, with lots of great and funny stories.
John’s guests are drummer Ed Toth, and percussionist Marc Quinones, of The Doobie Brothers. Ed recalled being invited to audition for the Doobie Brothers in 2005 after his band "Vertical Horizon" disbanded, to replace the late-great Keith Knudsen and be second drummer alongside Micheal Hossack. Marc recalled joining the Allman Brothers Band in 1991 at the invitation of the late-great Butch Trucks, where he was percussionist for 23 years alongside Butch and Jaimoe, until the band stopped in 2014. He then joined Greg Allman’s band until Greg’s passing, and joined the Doobie Brothers in 2018. Throughout the show, John, Ed and Marc talked about their long history together, with lots of great Doobie Brothers and Allman Brothers stories.
John’s guest is the legendary Peter Erskine! Peter and John discussed Peter’s MD Legends Series Book (available now!), and numerous other topics including vintage drums, selecting ride cymbals, home recording and much more. They also talked about Peter’s upcoming induction into the PAS (Percussive Arts Society) Hall Of Fame in November of 2022. Both Peter and John shared some funny stories, and Peter offered some invaluable drumming insights as only a true Legend like he can.
John’s guest is Chris Hart, Director of Artist Relations at Remo Inc. Chris has built relationships with the world’s top drummers and percussionists and in this show, you’ll see why he is one of the most loved and respected figures in the Drum Industry. John and Chris discussed their history going back to when they met in 1985 working for Simmons Electronic Drums in Los Angeles. Chris shared stories and insights from his 30 years working at Remo, including Remo Belli himself promoting him to Marketing Manager of Remo’s World Percussion program, meeting the legendary Louie Bellson for the first time and his relationship with him, a great Paul McCartney story, and much more.
John’s guest is Lorne Wheaton. Lorne is one of the most respected and sought after drum techs and stage managers in the business, and has worked for a who’s who of drummers and bands, including Steve Smith/Journey & Vital Information, Alex Van Halen/Van Halen, Mickey Curry/Bryan Adams, Keith Carlock/Steely Dan, John Tempesta/The Cult, Eric Singer/Kiss and Neil Peart/Rush. He was Neil’s tech from 2001 until his passing in 2020. Lorne recalls how he got his start at age 14 or 15, helping “Rush” with their equipment at high schools dances and how it evolved into a career spanning more than four decades, including coming full circle to work for Neil and Rush in 2001. Lorne also shared some great stories about Neil’s incredible work ethic and dedication to his craft. And much more!

John and Ronn discussed Ronn’s early years as a drummer playing throughout Canada, forming Dunnett Classic Drums 30 years ago, acquiring the George Way Drum Company and most recently his acquisition of Milestone Percussion. Ronn gives a great history lesson on George Way and his designs and innovations that are still being used today. Gina and MD’s Billy Amendola have a relaxing afternoon in Brooklyn discussing the effect of her first concert at eleven years old igniting her dream of becoming a musician and leading her on a path of success. Gina also discusses her first book, Made in Hollywood: All Access with The Go-Go’s. A coffee table book packed with stories and photos collected by the drummer over her 40-year career. “I’m excited to share this with everyone because these photos have just been sitting in drawers and under the beds and closets and all over the place,” says Schock. “It’s nice to have them all in one place so that everybody will be able to see them.” Recently the Go-Go’s were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by actress Drew Barrymore. “When I was about seven I discovered the Go-Go’s. I went out and bought their album Beauty and the Beat. Parts of Earl’s interview can be read in his cover story in both print/digital editions of MD but, we had so much to cover that we wound up talking for hours and having enough material for the magazine and two episodes for the MD Podcast.
Earl’s career is astounding because most people know him as the recording drummer/singer/performer of the Grammy award-winning group The Trammps. To this day, the group is still selling out shows around the world. Earl also happens to be one of the most recorded Disco/R&B/Soul drummers of all time. Earl created a whole new sound he innovated called disco.
At one point, TSOP/MFSB/Salsoul turned out hit after hit after hit and had songs on the radio in the 1960s & 70s that are now “Soul/R&B/Disco classics.”

Welcome to this weeks Modern Drummer Podcast with Billy Amendola and Doobie Brothers drummer Ed Toth. (with special “pop in guest,” radio personality, actor, & film maker Al Banderio). Al mentions the upcoming Rocky IV movie he is in, which features a new directors cut theatrical release on November 11th.
Ed Toth, who was a member of the 90s million selling group Vertical Horizon, has been touring with the Doobies now for sixteen years. He joined original Doobie Brother’s drummer Michael Hossack from 2005 to 2010, and doubled drums with Tony Pia from 2010 to 2016. After Tony’s departure, the band decided to just keep it at one drummer. Ed has held down the fort for the rest of 2016, 2017, and in 2018, famed percussionist Marc Quiñones from the Allman Brothers joined on percussion. Ed says; “Marc and I have a really cool thing happening and he is a joy to play with!”
The band with Michael McDonald is currently wrapping up their 50th anniversary tour for 2021 and have plans to tour again in 2022.

If you’re not familiar with his enormous body of work, please look up his discography, and it’ll make your head spin. Since a very young age, Josh has been a touring musician, a first-call studio musician, a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, and a band member as both a leader and hired gun. He recently finished up touring and doing dates with Devo and The Offspring, in between playing on hit albums and songs, and he’s getting ready as we speak to head out back on the road with Sting. He is a member of the Vandals (since 1989) and Devo (since 1996), he played drums for Guns N' Roses from 1997 to 2000, A Perfect Circle from 1999 to 2012, Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008, Weezer from 2009 to 2011, and recorded over 400 records. In December 2010, Freese toured with Paramore on their South American tour. In fall 2016, he returned to playing full-time with Sting, whom he toured and recorded within 2005. Beautiful Day’s Elizabeth Freund curated this week's MD Podcast with Ringo Starr on a private Zoom press conference to announce Ringo Starr Change The World, a new EP to be released on September 24, 2021.
The 4 tracks were all recorded at Starr's Roccabella West studio and features frequent and new collaborators.
Ringo comments, "I only want to release EPs at this point and here is the next one. What a blessing it's been during this past year to have a studio here at home and be able to collaborate with so many great musicians.”
The lead single "Let's Change The World" was written by Joseph Williams and Steve Lukather of Toto.
"Just That Way" was written and performed by Ringo and his longtime engineer Bruce Sugar, and it carries on the reggae vibe from his last EP, Zoom In's "Waiting for the Tides to Turn" with Tony Chen returning on guitar, joined by Fully Fullwood on Bass and Ed Roth on Hammond B3.
"Coming Undone" is Starr's first collaboration with songwriter/producer Linda Perry, who wrote and plays on the track that also featuring Trombone Shorty.
For the final number, Ringo rocks his own version of "Rock Around The Clock" revved up by the unmistakable licks of Joe Walsh on guitar. They are joined by Nathan East on Upright Bass, Bruce Sugar on Piano and Amy Keys and Windy Wagner on Backing Vocals.
Besides the EP, Ringo also talks about the upcoming much anticipated six hour “Get Back” film coming November 2021. Enjoy!

Today March 19, 2021, Ringo releases his EP titled Zoom In, which features five songs, all of which were recorded at Starr’s home studio between April-October 2020. Starr collaborated with songwriters and producers, and an ever-widening group of musicians playing on the songs, some socially distanced and joining him safely in his studio, always exercising an abundance of caution, and others working on their parts remotely.
“It just unfolds,” Ringo said of the recording process, “when I start making a record here in LA at home.” Joining Starr were musicians Nathan East (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar), Bruce Sugar (synth guitar), Benmont Tench (piano), and Jim Cox (string arrangements and synth) Dave Grohl, Ben Harper and Jenny Lewis also joined Starr among others, and all contributed to the first single, Here’s To The Nights. As Ringo recalled, “Diane Warren sent me the song and I loved the sentiment of it. She sent it in a chord I like to call F demented, it was very high, so Benmont Tench transposed it into a key human beings can actually sing - that's how we started with that song. We wanted to add a lot of voices singing on the chorus and so she asked her friends and I asked mine, and not only did we get a lot of people singing on the record, we had a lot of fun, which is how I think it should be, and I got to know a few new friends.” The title track, “Zoom In, Zoom Out,” was penned by Jeff Silbar and features the Doors Robbie Krieger on guitar. “I wanted to call this ‘Zoom In,’ which I think is great for this day and age. For this record, I wanted to get people I hadn't worked with before, so for this track we invited Robby Krieger.” Sam Hollander wrote and produced “Teach Me To Tango,” sending Ringo a nearly completed track onto which Ringo added vocals and, one drum fill. “I called Sam because I had so much fun with him on my last CD. What was great was when I was doing my vocals (Sam lives in New York so I did my part in my home studio here in LA), was there was one part of it and I felt there has got to be a drum fill there! So the credits now read ‘Ringo vocals and 1 drum fill’” (Blair Sinta lays down the drum track) Image Ringo co-wrote “Waiting For The Tide to Turn” with his engineer Bruce Sugar, adding Tony Chen and his extensive reggae roots; “This was something my engineer Bruce Sugar started, but it didn't have a lot of words, so we wrote it together. I did my version of reggae and what was great was we had Tony Chen, who played with Bob Marley and lives here in LA, come over and play on it. He said, ‘hey Mon, that you on drums mon?’ and I said yes, and he said ‘great drums mon, very reggae!’ and my heart swelled! It was so great coming from him!” With four tracks completed, Ringo thought the EP was done. That is until Steve Lukather came over, with his friend and Toto band mate Joseph Williams, as Ringo tells the story: “We had 4 tracks - and then Lukather came over and brought this semi produced track, ‘Not Enough Love In the World’. The sentiment of it - not enough peace in the world, not enough love - I could not not do it - I had to do this track. So I put the vocals on, the drums on, Steve played a bit more guitar, Joe added some harmonies, and it all came together. In addition to making new music during the pandemic, Ringo also completed and released a new limited-edition retrospective hardcover book titled “RINGO ROCKS: 30 YEARS OF THE ALL STARRS 1989-2019.”Proceeds will benefit The Lotus Foundation.
