My culinary expert and cooking extraordinaire husband Emil came home to the goopy mess and was determined to solve the case.

Half a cup of baking powder, check.

"Wait, wait, wait. Half a cup of baking powder?" He burst out laughing. It was on this day I learned a very important, soapy-tasting lesson on the difference between baking soda and baking powder.

In the wrong proportion, this one little ingredient caused my whole cake to be an unwanted, overlooked waste of effort.

But if I had simply tweaked that one ingredient, my cake would have been a huge success, and the whole family would have queued up, ready to savor a slice.

The same goes for an online course. You might have all the right ingredients, but if one thing is slightly out of proportion, your whole online course cake could turn into a giant, unwanted, cyber soap-tasting mess.

I used to think, 'once I start making serious money, I'll feel worthy.' Low and behold, the very month that my business made the most profit ever, I had a breakdown in the form of a panic attack (let me tell you, they ain’t fun).

“Is all my hard work even worth it, or am I on a one-way road to nowhere?”

I'm sure you're sick of hearing about 'gratitude’ at this time of the year.

It can often feel like an overused buzzword. However, hear me out gratitude is more than a whole ton of Kumbaya around a campfire. It's a key component in achieving unbelievable goals!

There are so many neurological reasons we can benefit from this general practice of expressing thanks for both the good and the bad in our lives, especially in times of challenge and change.

It's safe to say, the last two years have been pretty traumatic for all of us, and navigating a new world with unexpected changes, all of which were entirely out of our control. Especially as business owners!

If left undealt with, this trauma can start wreaking havoc internally without us even realizing it and hold us back from experiencing the unbelievable good that’s coming our way!

Here is one thing I have discovered about dealing with tough times.

When you learn to become grateful for the bad and see the beauty it brings, it loses its power over you. It no longer consumes you with negative emotions. Gratitude is reclaiming your power and looking at the situation with peace.

I really encourage you to sit down and think about all the good that has resulted from 2021, even in the moments we'd rather not relive. Perhaps you found new opportunities in your business, or you had more quality time to spend with family, or you embraced a slower pace of life. Take the time to reflect and find the silver linings.

In my career, there are a few people that I remain forever grateful to.

And one of them is Denise Duffield Thomas.

And recently, it all came full circle.

The other day, a student of mine posted a question on our A-Lister Facebook Page that went something like this:

She’d recently added 500 new people to her email list and was terrified that her course wouldn’t be able to deliver. That she would be a disappointment to her students and that she would be discovered as a fraud.

That post got me thinking. When I dug into myself, I realized I’ve faced this fear multiple times in my own career.

Anne LaFollete was 55 when she found herself without a job for the first time in over 2 decades.

She had a few choices:

Let’s face it: This year has SUCKED.

If you’re anything like me, you’re pretty ready for a new year. A year where maybe, if we’re lucky, the worldwide pandemic won’t be such a threat to so many people around the globe. A year where things might start returning back to normal. A year where people can leave their houses without fear of illness each day and loved ones can gather together.

However…it’s October 2020, and we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic. We need to make the most of this season, however frustrating and scary, and keep pushing forward to have a positive impact on the world around us.

I am so grateful to work in online marketing. I thought that I had it bad not being able to travel for events in my industry this year, but a recent trip up north in my state made me realise that people in other industries have it much, much, much worse.

We’ve got to make the best of what we have and work hard so that we can support those who are under more threat than we are. We can inject money into our local economies, we can keep people working, and we can make the world a better place by sharing knowledge and doing it well.

I quit my job twice.

The reason I had to quit twice was because after three years of struggle and a very disappointing course launch, I quit online courses and went back to my job.

Over the past 3 years, I have had the massive privilege of having a front-row seat to a LOT of amazing online courses.

What I didn’t even think was possible three years ago, I’ve seen other people pull off effectively. Sometimes with grace and style, and sometimes with frustration and disappointment.
