This week we welcomed Madison Mooney, an advisor on the Sarah Shulze Foundation, which supports mental health, advocates for student athletics and advances women’s rights. As an all academic Big Ten and track and field athlete at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has dealt with the side affects of mental health, by first hand losing a teammate to the challenges of it. Former NFL defensive end Devon Still was familiar with adversity during and after his football career. His biggest adversity came after his retirement in June 2014. His daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma stage 4 cancer. As Devon sat with her during treatment, he noticed a lot of kids were in the hospital, alone, while their mom or dad were at work, fighting to keep food on the table for their family. Inspired to financially help families whose children are battling cancer so no child has to battle alone, he started the Still Strong Foundation. Washington State University Quarterback Tyler Hilinski was a rising quarterback. To many, Tyler was happy, funny, and one of the kindest individuals on and off the field. While everything seemed to be going well for Tyler, no one knew he struggled with his mental health. In 2018, he died by suicide. Today, we talk with Tyler’s parents, Mark and Kym, on how they are honoring the life of their son through the Hilinski Hope Foundation. Wife, mother, grandmother and philanthropist are just a few words to describe Cherry Starr. For 44 years, Cherry and her husband Bart Starr supported the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation and helped raise over $16 million. More recently, Cherry helped start the Starr Children’s Fund to support pediatric cancer research. Prior to the recent racial injustice against African Americans, we spoke to Indiana Pacers’ Malcolm Brogdon about his true passions. While he loves the game of basketball – since his youth, he saw basketball as a means to his end goal: helping others.
