Distracted driving is a major contributor to the rising rates of deaths and injuries due to MVCs. Nearly every patient in the survey study acknowledged distracted driving at least sometimes, according to the new research, led by Bill Ristevski, MD, of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont., Canada. It is becoming clear that gender bias and gender-based data gaps are everywhere, even in orthopaedics. But, isn’t an arthritic knee an arthritic knee? Perhaps not. Gender bias is evident in how surgical procedures are offered and large data gaps exist in assessing clinical outcomes after surgery. This discussion will review how gender bias manifests for our orthopaedic surgery patients with regards to diagnosis, treatment and how we assess clinical outcomes. For us to better understand these factors, more women need to be enrolled in clinical trials. Also, in order to provide optimal care for our patients, gender-specific analysis of outcome data with consideration of confounding variables, will be of paramount importance

Patients commonly present with acute pain secondary to an acute injury, and there are dozens of potential options for addressing their pain. Most trials explore the effectiveness of a treatment option versus placebo or sham therapy, which complicates assessment of comparative effectiveness among competing therapies. We will discuss the role of network meta-analyses to inform comparative effectiveness, despite limited evidence from head-to-head trials.

Dr. Asheesh Bedi is the Harold and Helen W. Gehring Early Career Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Michigan and MedSport Program. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical College He is a team physician for the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University and a consultant for the NFL and NHL Players Association, and specializes in both arthroscopic and open surgery for athletic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee.
Dr. Bedi completed his undergraduate training at Northwestern University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with AOA recognition, and remained in Ann Arbor to pursue residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan. After completing his training, Dr. Bedi completed a two-year fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. He has also pursued additional dedicated training with Dr. Bryan Kelly in arthroscopic hip surgery for young athletes. While in New York, he was an assistant team physician for the New Jersey Nets professional basketball and New York Mets professional baseball organizations with Dr. Riley Williams, Struan Coleman, and David Altchek. He was also an orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in 2007 and 2008 with Dr. David Dines and an assistant team physician for Iona College Athletic Programs. Dr. Bedi has also been recognized with the Leonard Marmor Outstanding Orthopaedic Resident Award, and the Hospital for Special Surgery Philip D. Wilson Award for Excellence in both 2008 and 2009 for his efforts in orthopaedic research and tendon-bone healing studies with Dr. Scott Rodeo. He is the winner of the 2010 Neer Award of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and a recipient of the 2010 Cabaud Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He has authored over one hundred articles, chapters, and peer-reviewed publications on shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip injuries in athletes.
Dr. Jason Busse is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesia and Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics, McMaster University. He is the co-Principle Investigator for the TRUST trial, one of the world’s largest orthopedic randomized controlled trials.
Training
Dr. Busse completed an MSc in Medical and Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto, a Doctorate in Chiropractic at CMCC, training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at McMaster University, and a PhD in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University.
Dr. Busse has been active clinically in the management of disability secondary to chronic pain and other medically unexplained syndromes since 1999 and currently serves as the Clinical Director for Prisma Health Canada – a private company that manages chronic claimants (5+ years on disability) referred by private disability insurers. From 2001 to 2010 Dr. Busse was the Director of the Complex Claims Division for ATF Canada, a private company that provided assessment and treatment for patients in receipt of long-term disability benefits.
Research
Dr. Busse has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals with a focus on chronic pain, orthopedic trauma, insurance medicine and methodological research. In 2011 Dr. Busse co-formed the evidence-based insurance medicine research group, an international collaboration with members from McMaster University, the University Medical Center Groningen, and the Academy of Swiss Insurance Medicine. He is a Director of the Cochrane Insurance Medicine Field Group (http://insuremed.cochrane.org/our-team). Current research projects include:
FORESITE– a prospective cohort to establish factors associated with persistent post-surgical pain following heart surgery
Update and revision of the Canadian Guideline regarding opioids for chronic non-cancer pain

Kiret's research lies at the intersection of AI and healthcare with a primary focus on neuroscience and neurotechnology, as well as active research areas in medical imaging and bioinformatics. Coming from a multidisciplinary background combining statistics, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering, Kiret is both a data scientist and an experimental scientist.
Kiret completed a B. Sc. with a double major in Statistics and Psychology at York University, and a PhD in Computational Engineering and Science on brain-computer interfacing at McMaster University
Dr. Sprague is a clinical researcher with expertise in the design and conduct of large randomized controlled trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and scoping reviews. She obtained a Doctorate Degree in Medical Science from the University of Amsterdam and a Master of Science Degree in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. She became a Faculty Member with the Department of Surgery in 2014 and serves as an Associate Faculty Member in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact in 2017. Darryl graduated from the University of Toronto in 2006 with a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy. He later completed further post-graduate education and Master's in Clinical Science at Western University and became a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physical Therapists in 2009.
He is the Senior Director of Quality, Risk Management and Clinical Services at BCHS.
He is the professor of the Business and Entrepreneurship in Physical Therapy course at Western University. He also lectures at McMaster University, University of Toronto and Queen's University on business and practice management topics.
Darryl is a consultant with orthopaedic and neurosurgeons and has a special interest in hip and spine. He is a co-author of, Diagnosis and Management of Femoroacetabular Impingement: An Evidence-Based Approach - Chapter: ‘Evidence for Rehabilitation After FAI Surgery: A guide to Postsurgical Rehabilitation and Supporting Evidence.’ He has co-authored multiple publications and has presented at over 50 conferences and courses throughout Canada and Internationally.
