Jacqui MacPeake’s interest in food allergies became a particular passion when her own daughter began to struggle with multi food allergies and intolerances at the age of 14. Jacqui’s unique position as a professional caterer and a parent of someone who needs to pay particular attention to her choice of foods enables her to provide valuable advice and a personal insight into this particular field.
Jacqui has also been awarded “Free From Hero Award 2018” for the work she has already undertaken to raise awareness of allergens in the University Sector.
In this episode, Jacqui shares her personal story and how business can become more allergy aware and most importantly allergy safe.
Q: Our daughter was recently diagnosed with a nut allergy. My wife and I are used to eating a lot of nuts in our diet. We of course want to keep our daughter safe but wanted to find out could we keep nuts in our home or should get rid of them all? What should we do? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

Q: When you do an elimination diet is there a “delay” in your stomach getting better? It took me over a month off the foods for my joint pain to subside, but I am still getting stomach aches nearly every day, usually right after I eat. But it doesn’t seem to matter much what I eat that I can tell, it happens after every meal of a reasonable size. I’ve been totally free of intolerant foods since early September…does it just take a while for the stomach to heal or am I missing something? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

Q: My son is allergic to all nuts, sesame and egg. We don’t eat “may contains” and we don’t have his allergens in the house. Is it wrong that I really miss eating eggs and nuts but I feel guilty whenever I do? Even if he is not around? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

Q: Looking for some sauce ideas. I can’t have egg, dairy, gluten or high sugar. I’ve been using Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce to throw on meat but it’s too much sodium. Anything I could make or buy? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

It’s not very often I get to talk to allergy Mum’s who are coming to the end of their journey. This week I am excited to introduce you to Sarah Chapman blogger and founder of The Allergy Matters Conference (inaugural year October 19th, 2018!!).
Sarah walks me through her journey raising 2 allergy kids, one who has had their allergies since a baby and her daughter who developed allergies as a teenager. She has managed allergies including nuts, dairy, soya and Oral Allergy Syndrome.
We talk about the road of discovery, diagnosis, raising the kids, eating out, being teenagers and now how they are managing their allergies on their own.
Sarah talks about her experiences in hindsight, how to manage the anxiety, the difference between children being diagnosed in the 1990s and children being diagnosed now.
We then go on to talk about the Allergy Matters Conference that Sarah is organising taking place in Runcorn, UK on October 19th 2018. There are a number of speakers including healthcare professionals and allergy organisations who will be there and we get a sneak peak at who will be there!

Q: My son goes to a private daycare. They had decided to make the room peanut and tree nut free for him… until… another mom complained. Because, obviously, it’s not fair to her child since she wants to send almond milk for her child as his protein. The director asked for a letter from our allergist explaining the need of being nut free. Even after receiving his letter saying my son needs to be in a nut free room, they’ve decided to allow them to send almond milk. Which, ironically, has less protein than the soy, coconut, or Lactaid milk I give my son! I’m ticked! What can I do? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

In today’s episode I talk with podcast listener allergy Mum Jessica. Jessica is a mum to two allergy kids, her 2 year old daughter (nut and egg allergy) and 5 month old son (dairy free, and who joins us on the episode).
Jessica has just finished her first year of being an allergy Mum and she tells me what its been like. She shares how some things have got easier and what she is concerned about for the future.
Although this wasn’t originally a coaching call, towards the end of the episode I offer an alternative ways to think about having nuts in the house, I ask Jessica to talk about why she felt guilty for eating nuts even when she is away from her daughter, and offer a way to think about planning for the future.
At the end of the episode Jessica shares what our chat has made her think about and what she’s learned from our chat.

Katy is an allergy mum (and money blogger on katykicker.com) to a toddler who they discovered has FPIES. In today’s episode, Katy tells me all about the reality of living with FPIES on a day to day basis, the lack of information GPs hold, and how they often assume that when your child is just unwell. We also talk about managing your anxieties around your child’s allergy, when they are justified and perhaps when they are just you being a parent. Katy also talks about the symptoms her daughter has when she is reacting and how they can vary. We talk about educating family, friends and extended family too.
What is FPIES? FPIES stands for Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. It is a type of food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
What are the symptoms of FPIES? Symptoms include but are not limited to vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration which leads to lethargy. Children can often look pale or blue. Other symptoms can include low blood pressure, and blood tests that mimic infection which can look like sepsis or lead to sepsis like shock.
All children are different and can have different symptoms.

Q: My son is 3 and attends daycare. Occasionally people will bring in store bought cupcakes. This happened today and they called to ask if he could have them since it said the bakery used peanut products there. I told them no but in saying this what do you suggest I leave at daycare for my child in events like this? Any treat ideas I could leave there for him instead? That way he doesn't get sad he can't have any. If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here.

Rebecca is a mum to two children (and two dogs) and blogs at Glutarama - life’s a drama but gluten free doesn’t have to be. In her family life she manages multiple autoimmune diseases of type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease, and autism.
Rebecca is a woman I greatly respect for perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges and with such an amazing sense of humour.
The symptoms in both her children were occurring at the same time. There was no history of auto-immune disease in the family. In today’s episode Rebecca gives an open and honest account of what life has been like starting with noticing symptoms in both her children, getting a diagnosis, changing their family lifestyle to manage these conditions, how to parent and how she keeps herself sane.
I would like to say a special thank you to Rebecca for coming on the podcast and sharing her story in such an open way about the highs, the lows, the challenges and the wins!

Q: I had an unexpected close call this evening. We went out to dinner with a couple we just met. We all met at Denny's - as they have been awesome with us and my 16 month daughter's pn allergy. I always bring food from home for my girl just in case, and was explaining to the other couple about my girl's allergy and how severe it is, how we have to be so careful about foods prepped around peanuts and butter- you know the drill when you tell new people. Well we all go to order our food and this other lady orders PEANUT BUTTER PANCAKES. I can't even. It's got this peanut butter sauce all over it dripping everywhere. So I tell the waitress how my food needs to be cooked separately (because obviously) and was silently freaking out. I gave my husband THAT look and stared at this woman like, did she just not pay attention to what I just said? My daughter is ana to pn. I don't know how to handle these situations with people and do not have the ability to be diplomatic sometimes when I'm in freak out mode. What would you have done? (Note- to complicate- they had two young boys sharing food with mom, who were very eager to play with my girl and I wouldn't let them.) Allergy Mum Helena shares her relatively new but very involved journey in today’s episode. She talks about figuring out what what was making her children ill, her experiences at the doctors, adapting to an allergy safe lifestyle and mother’s guilt. Helena’s 3 small children (the twins are 4 years old, youngest is 2 years old) have between them environmental allergies, (potentially) asthma, and multiple food allergies (egg, dairy and soya). The twins were premature babies so that had its complications too. It was and still is a journey to maintain health and a full diagnosis, but Helena has grown so much. I ask Helena about how she dealt with the emotions and anxiety for her sick babies. What she looked out for, her instincts as a Mum and then how she communicated that to the doctors. 27:00 I offer some of my experiences as a grown up allergy kid on how to think differently about mother’s guilt. How, although your child has to be in and out of hospital, your child will probably have a different idea of it because their association is where they get better. As an adult we have so much more awareness of the world and the connotations of allergy and asthma management and the worse case scenario, but children getting involved, wanting to put together their spacer or take their medication themselves is just like wanting to push the button at the pedestrian crossing. They want to be involved in their world, they want to take ownership and be grown up. That’s a good thing when they have allergies.

Jess is writing an allergy cookbook and lifestyle guide and has launched a campaign on Kickstarter (ending Mon 18 June 2018!). Today she is on the podcast to tell me all about it; the history, the inspiration and how she needs your help to get it published!
Jess calls herself a food allergy collector. Having grownup with a shellfish allergy as a kid she then developed more food allergies as an adult including corn, wheat, gluten, oats, soy and sesame. I ask Jess about her journey getting diagnosed the process she went through and how she finally figured out what was causing her symptoms.
The lifestyle and cookbook started from a little note book Jess was keeping as she was trying to figure out how to make the foods she loved, before all her food allergies.

In the last episode I was open and honest about where Eat Allergy Safe is right now and my efforts to keep it going. The solution is to make it a viable business both to keep the blog, podcast and me in house and home.
What viable business could I make? Much of my time is spent answering questions via email and on social media so I thought the most sensible solution is to start personal consultations, a.k.a Allergy Coaching. In this podcast episode I talk all about Allergy Coaching: what is it, who's it for, why it would be useful to you, where it happens and how you can book in.
I will charge by the hour at $60/£40. If you would like to book for a session, book a free 15 minute consultation and find out some more information, send me an email today.
If you're on my email list, you will have received this email last week. Although this wasn't comfortable for me to write or record, it's time I ask for help.
Like most people, I choose not to openly discuss money issues. But I’m going to put that to one side because I think it’s more important to tell you the whole truth of my own finances and therefore the future of Eat Allergy Safe…
Eat Allergy Safe Now
I run Eat Allergy Safe out of my own pocket and have done so for the last 3 years. I have a few products I sell including Chocolate Truffles and my first recipe book Chocolate Treats. But the majority of content I do for free, including:
Blog posts Podcast and video episodes Recipe posts Email list hints and tips Answering private messages asking for advice about allergy management (this takes a lot of time)
Costs
The truth is, book and truffle sales are enough to cover only a small portion of running Eat Allergy Safe. The rest of my expenses are covered by my freelance tutoring (for GCSE and a-level students) and from my savings. These costs include:
Website hosting Podcast hosting Recording equipment Food for recipes My time, which I can’t spend on other money generating activities
The Future of Eat Allergy Safe
To keep this project going, as well as keep myself in house and home, I have to start changing the mix of free vs paid services I offer. The things I will keep doing for free are:
Blog posts Podcast episodes Recipe posts Allergy Show talks
What I Will Start Charging For
Most of my time is spent answering people’s questions online or via email. I realise that this information is valuable, and after positive feedback a couple months ago, I have designed a consultation service, a.k.a Allergy Coaching $60 (or £40) per hour, which will be conducted by phone or online via Skype. Allergy Coaching can be 1-on-1 for you and your spouse, or family sessions.
I think this is the most reasonable solution to keep Eat Allergy Safe and myself going. Without it I have to spend more time on other paying jobs and you would receive much less valuable information as a result.
If $60 / £40 per hour is too much for you but you would still like to ask questions and get advice, please ‘reply’ to this email. I may set up a private paid group for those who want to pay less. In there you’d be able to ask questions online as long as you are subscribed.
What My Boyfriend Said About This
It has been really tough to write this email. (I tried 4 times before it was even semi coherent.) The idea of charging for something that I would happily give away for free is terrifying! And how do you put a price tag on it? When I came up with £40/$60, I told my other half and he said, “well that’s cheap, mines $150 p/hr!”.
How You Can Help, Without Spending Anything
If you are not in a position where you need allergy coaching please pass my information on to another parent who is in the first phase of dealing with an allergy diagnosis. Here’s the link you can forward: www.eatallergysafe.com/coaching
Finally
I really want Eat Allergy Safe to live on and become something that helps people every day. So that you don’t feel alone or helpless in the overwhelm of diagnosis, or feel guilty that your child has a food allergy but that you can give your child the life you dream for them. I feel the only way to make this happen is to turn Eat Allergy Safe into a viable business, and the larger it becomes the more people we can help who’ve just received the dreaded allergy diagnosis.
Thank you for your understanding and for helping me take this idea forward.

Elizabeth D Bakes is a company specialising in gluten free baked goods. Started by Elizabeth, a few years ago, the company has grown from market stalls to supplying to Whole Foods Market. What’s different about Elizabeth D Bakes is their founder does not have any allergies or intolerances. So why would someone with no personal need start a free from business? This is exactly what I ask Elizabeth. Elizabeth takes me through her journey learning about allergies from developing recipes free from gluten, what, eggs and dairy to start, as well as cross-contamination, and how to bake safely for allergies and coeliac disease. She tells me stories of her customers and how they shaped the development of Elizabeth D Bakes. Other questions I ask:
How do you source ingredients? What have you learned about allergies and free from? When and why did you decide to have a dedicated gluten free kitchen? What was your first baking fail? What has been a baking success?

Elisabeth and her daughter Valerie are on today’s episode talking about dealing intolerances and multiple allergies including gluten, dairy, nuts, raw carrot, beef and lamb. It hasn’t been an easy road for Mum Elisabeth both with her own intolerances and managing Valerie’s allergies. Early in Valerie’s life it was about fighting for her health, figuring out what the allergen triggers were and how to keep her nourished. The doctors were very concerned in the beginning but Elisabeth didn’t give up! Valerie is 12 years old now and loving school and all the normal stuff kids get up to. Some things she finds difficult [go to 11:00 - 18:22] but as Elisabeth has taught her, it’s about focusing on the wins and learning how to overcome challenges [27:40]. I share some of my experiences too, telling Valerie how I faced some of my allergy fears when I was her age. Check out her comic below. It’s the story of her ice cream allergy win! What do you do when you’re first diagnosed with allergies? The doctors give you a shock of a lifetime telling you something could kill you and then often just leave you to it. What do you do then? In this episode I’m welcoming back Nathalie Rhone from episode 56. Today we talk about how she manages the stress of Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) knowing 30 of the allergens that make her sick and knowing there are others. Nathalie takes us through her first doctor visit, what they told her and her diagnosis being allergic to carrots. Currently she is under the supervision of her allergist in the pre-stages of Oral Immunotherapy Treatment (OIT) and introducing new foods to her diet. She has experienced the full spectrum of food allergy anxiety, but it’s still not stopping her live her life to the full. Nathalie is going to take us through her learning curve, what she learned from managing her allergy, how she deals with doctors and how she manages allergic reactions. Most notably we talk at length about when and how to use your Adrenaline Auto-Injector pen (AAI).

Today's Guest: The Allergy Chef, Kathlena
WEBSITE: theallergychef.com

Today I talk with Kathlena, The Allergy Chef. Her own journey as been the exception in the allergy community. Her allergies present as mimicking mental health issues, allergic reactions, and other symptoms. They are not typical and this meant it has taken decades to have a proper diagnosis. Kathlena tells me about managing her own allergies, having a family with allergies and starting a business.
What You'll Learn: Kathlena has allergies to foods, chemicals and the environment, but this hasn't stopped her from living her life. Her allergies are so severe that she has to where a mask to go outside. I think this is such a brilliant solution to overcome of a challenge, and it's so brilliant because it is SO simple! No fuss, just a solution.
Kathlena tells me about her journey and how when her kids were born and their allergies were discovered she started a business to produce allergy friendly food and start educating the wider world.
We as the food allergy can't expect the world to cater to our needs @freefriendfoodClick To Tweet
We talk about the worry that comes with food allergies. The worry of getting a diagnosis, going food shopping, dealing with other people and the danger associated with allergies. But we also discuss what are the risks? How do we manage those risks and our own anxieties especially as a parent. Kathlena has some special advice for parents who are the worrier type, if thats you listen from 27:00 - 36:00 on the track.
With allergies, you have to think: how can I be practical?Click To Tweet
When it comes to allergies you have to think about how you can be practical. How can you have the life you want and not let your allergies define you? Kathlena and I talk about how we need to be practical, how it's about taking the challenges and turning them in to a problem you want to solve. We allergy sufferers and parents need to be problem solvers. But if you don't feel like this is you, the beauty of being human is that we change, we can adapt and we can develop. But only if we choose to.

In today's episode I talk to Natalie Rhone. She developed adult onset anaphylaxis and has steadily developed more and more allergies meaning that her daily meals has had to be chicken and potatoes because it's the only things she doesn't react to...I mean that sounds crazy!?
So what is life like? What was it like developing allergies later in life and then continuing to develop more and more. I get Natalie to tell me about her journey, the whole lot of it and where she's got to. It's a tough road she's on but she's decided that the allergies aren't going to rule her life. This is part of why she started No Nuts 4 Me. The blog is the base for the documentary film she is doing on allergies. Why do we get them? What we should know about diagnosis, medication, OIT. The lot. I'm so excited to see it. If you're on her email list you get to see sneak peaks by the way...

Today is the finale in our Allergy Kids Series. Over the months of September and October each week I have been talking to kids with food allergies about what they really think about having allergies and how they live with them everyday. These allergy kids range from as young as 4 years old all the way up to the grownup allergy kids. The aim of this series is to give you an insight into the thoughts, likes, dislikes, worries and celebrations of allergy kids and how it changes over the years.
In the finale of the series I have invited on Allergy Mum Lusi to ask me questions. The cycle has come full circle now and that is something to celebrate! From our parents as our protectors, our educators and our advocators, now we allergy kids can start helping the new generation of allergy parents.
I think this is such a wonderful circle because we can provide reassurance that allergy kids don't have to suffer or miss out. Instead we can learn to use our allergies to become better, more creative, more skilled and more compassionate people!
A new project I am just dipping my toe into the water with is mentoring. I want to help newly diagnosed parents, allergy kids and allergy teens to be more confident. So, in this episode I invited Lusi to come on the podcast and have a recorded session where she can ask me any questions she likes. What does she want to know about living with allergies? What are her fears and worries for her daughter as she's growing up and how can she as a Mum help.
Resources: Check out my mentoring page here and book your free 15 minute consultation.

Have you ever wondered what kids think about their food allergies? Is it as scary as we allergies think it is? Or is there a silver lining? Over the months of September and October I will be publishing the Allergy Kids Mini Series. Each week I will be talking to kids with food allergies about what they really think about having allergies and how they live with them everyday. These allergy kids range from as young as 4 years old all the way up to the grownup allergy kids. The aim of this mini series is to give you an insight into the thoughts, likes, dislikes, worries and celebrations of allergy kids and how it changes over the years. Many times allergy parents can worry that their child with allergies will miss out and will have a worse quality to life, but I know this isn’t the case and these allergy kids will show you how they don’t miss out, they just do things differently. Enjoy!
Today’s Grownup Allergy Kids: Amanda, grown up allergy kid with multiple severe food allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, legumes, dairy soya, chicken and some fruits) and her best friend Joella.
In the penultimate episode of the Allergy Kids mini series we have reached our grown up allergy kids. For many kids, we are going to have our allergies for life. We are going to have to navigate the world and do all those normal things like school. But when you're at school, you're still living at home. You still have your parents hounding you with "have you got your medication with you?" "have you told your friends about your allergies?" "don't forget to ask about ingredients!" But what is life like with allergies, outside the home bubble?
Nowadays, most teenagers head off to university, or college if you're in the US. You have to then meet all these new people and tell your brand new flatmates that you have life threatening.
Amanda and Joella met at university, a time when they were "learning to adult." Amanda wasn't confident with her allergies. In the beginning she told her new housemates by leaving a note on the fridge with the list of things she was allergic to. She didn't want to feel a nuisance by telling people. Interestingly, Joella and Amanda's boyfriend wanted to know why Amanda didn't tell people, because it's kind of important.
Click To Tweet and accepted it. - Amanda @EAFLifestyle" username="eatallergysafe"]
To Joella, Amanda wasn't living in a way that means she was missing out. Joella forgets that she has allergies because her cooking is "amazing" and whenever they meet new people this is her introduction of Amanda. Joella describes how delicious the kitchen smelled when they were in university, Joella found it amazing and surprising that even though she had so many restrictions that she could make such delicious meals you would never guess where allergen free.
Click To Tweet "no it's not sad!" - Joella @EAFLifestyle" username="eatallergysafe"]
University gave them a birds eye view that having allergies is a who lifestyle and this is what brought Amanda and Joella to start Everyday Allergen Free. What are the challenges that adult and teens facing and how can we look at these challenges and make a positive place to address these issues.
Allergy Kid Top Tips: Joella Top Best Friend Tips:
Take that extra 10 minutes to think through how to be allergy safe Communicate about your allergy! (If you're nervous about it: tell people before, call the restaurant before) Show people that you can look after your allergy, because you are responsible for your allergy
Amanda's Top Tips:
Surround yourself with good friends who care about you Just own your allergy: the earlier you start the better for you Get in the kitchen and start creating Don't be shy about your allergy, because there is always someone out there like you even if you don't realise it

Today’s Allergy Kid: Juliet, 21 years old, anaphylaxis to tree nuts
Juliet is a 21 year old college student with a tree nut allergy, but not a peanut allergy. Her parents discovered her tree nut allergy when she was a little kid. As a kid her family used to go out to dinner a lot, but then one accidental cross-contamination incident at a trusted bakery rocked her confidence. Juliet didn't want to eat out any more. She stopped eating out at restaurants for fear of cross-contamination. Then something changed. Juliet went to University in New York City and wanted to eat something different. She tried googling "nut free restaurants in New York," but couldn't find anything! As a 21st century young woman, this "kinda offended me," says Juliet so she decided to make her own list. This is how her blog nutfreenewyork.com started.

Enjoy!

Today's Guest: Laura Kenny
WEBSITE: www.dairyfreekids.ie
TWITTER: @dairyfreekids
This week I talk to Laura Kenny allergy mum and blogger over at dairyfreekids.ie. She is an Ireland based blogger with two dairy free kids. Laura tells me all about her journey to figuring out her boys could not tolerate dairy, the difficulties she’s had and how she’s managed to persevere.
What You'll Learn: Laura Kenny has two boys, 8 and 5 years old who are dairy free. Laura had quite a job getting to diagnosis. Her boys would be up crying in the night, have hard bloated stomachs and she just couldn’t figure out what was wrong. She went to the doctors hoping to get an answer and he eldest son went through testing. Laura’s youngest suffered from silent reflux as a baby, and it is was when she started bottle feeding her son that she suspected a milk allergy or intolerance in her youngest too. Laura and her family are based in Ireland. She tells me about the difficulty she had getting her boys diagnosed. In Ireland there doesn't seem to be a ‘milk ladder’ challenge like in the UK. Laura shares that a problem in Ireland is that there isn’t a system for diagnosis or at least a system in which patients can follow to figure out what may be an allergy. Nor to follow in monitoring a child’s progress, such as the ‘milk ladder.’ Once Laura figured out dairy was a problem for her boys, she had to start re-educating herself and her family. One of the things that Laura learned was where you can find milk and milk proteins in products, the usual like butter, milk and cheese and also the not so usual like ham slices. This was one of the most important things. Reading labels was daunting in the beginning but it got easier. Laura was not an avid cook in the beginning but she wanted to make sure her boys could always eat in their house. So she would look for dairy free alternatives but if she couldn’t find, she would make them herself. This became really usual when it came time to sending her boys to school. She would send in dairy free alternatives to make sure her boys didn't ever feel left out. A child must know about their allergies if they’re going to school.Click To Tweet We talk about the importance of communication. Communication is important for both explaining to the children about their allergies, telling the school/teachers/carers/family/friends and also for making sure your child can communicate about their allergies and just in case they have eaten something they are allergic to. I ask Laura also to talk about looking back in hindsight what she would do differently and what advice she has for other parents. For parents who knows their child is reacting to some food but doesn’t know what it is.

Today's Guest: Sunil Mistry
WEBSITE: freefromdirect.com
FACEBOOK: @FreeFromDirectStore
This week I talk with Sunil Mistry, founder of freefromdirect.com a brand new online shopping website for allergy friendly products. Sunil talks me through how having an extreme eczema flare up meant that he couldn’t work and lead to the discovery of a range of food allergies. His process of discovery and recovery showed him that finding free from products was tricky for a first time allergy sufferer and this lead him to start his own online business.
What You'll Learn: Sunil has had eczema, asthma, hay fever and grass pollen allergies since he was a kid. However this didn't stop him from being a normal kid who loved sports. He shares his experiences dealing with eczema flare ups after playing football and how he started swimming to help his fitness without affecting his environmental allergies. I ask Sunil to share with me how he discovered his allergies and how as an adult he had to start re-educating himself. His story began when he had to take time off work because his eczema got so bad if he moved his skin would split. The doctors did allergy testing to find out if food allergies could be the cause of his eczema. It turned out that Sunil was allergic to many of the top 14 allergens such as gluten and peanuts as well as other more rare ones such as mushroom, rice, peppers. The more I could educate myself, the more I could educate others.Click To Tweet Not only did Sunil have to re-educate himself, he had to start re-educating his family. He found that he had to control his food in order to figure what and how he could eat again. Sunil tells me about how educating himself was the biggest breakthrough to educating his family. Through his journey Sunil realised that finding products that were safe is still difficult. So he decided to do something about it. 6 months ago he started an online shopping website for people needing free from products. He wants people to be able to shop in ease and have products delivered directly to their door. This is when freefromdirect.com came into being. EAS 043: If I didn't take responsibility, no one would understand.Click To Tweet
He is looking for help from you. Sunil is at the beginning of his journey and wants to make this a website that is useful for you. He asks please can you go and have a look at the website and leave a comment in the popup box of what products you would want to see on the site.
As a thanks Sunil has a special offer for Eat Allergy Safe Podcast listeners. If you decide to buy anything, he has a discount code "EAS10" for you where you can receive 10% a £20 shop. Click here to check out the site and claim your discount.

This week I am talking to two of the three women behind the #alwayscarrytwo campaign. Angela, Iris and Lindsey are all allergy mums determined to make a difference for allergy families. In this interview I talk with Angela and Iris about dealing with post reaction anxiety and post-traumatic stress both in children and parents, getting ready for teenage years, teaching the schools how to accept and cater for allergies and the importance of carrying to adrenaline auto-injector pens (AAI).
What You'll Learn: Ep. 042: Allergy mum anxiety…”I grieved a life I thought she would never haveClick To Tweet Angela and Iris tell me about their journey learning to deal with their children’s allergies. Angela’s daughter developed an allergy to nuts the summer before she started secondary school. They discovered it on their family holiday! This came as a shock to Angela and her family especially as this holiday had meant to be some time to relax after dealing with some other health problems their daughter had had. Iris’ son is now 8 and as a young child suffered a number of severe allergic reactions. This impacted Iris and her son’s well being quite acutely. Iris was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress and her son suffered with a huge amount of anxiety about his allergy. Angela tells me about how this impacted their family, their friends and how they journeyed back to health. Ep. 042: I am more determined that we control it, not let allergies control us #alwayscarrytwoClick To Tweet Iris and Angela talk to me about the importance of not letting the anxiety get the better of you. They believe that if you give into the anxiety you will limit your life and your child’d life, which won’t do them any good. Iris shares how she helped her son get over his anxiety. She talks about the practical steps and actions she took to build his confidence, own his fears and anxiety. Ep.042: if you give in to the anxiety you will limit yours and your child's life #alwayscarrytwoClick To Tweet Last year, 2016, the guidelines for carrying 2 adrenaline auto-injector pens changed. Angela started the #alwayscarrytwo petition many years ago but with the new guidelines suggesting that allergy sufferers only need one adrenaline pen, Angela, Iris and Lindsey re-boosted the petition. The petition is about raising awareness, education and keeping allergy sufferers safe. Angela, Lindsey and Iris question “how can we risk-assess allergies?” They want to work with the doctors and researchers to find safe and workable guidelines that would not adversely affect an allergy sufferers quality of life and keep them safe. How can you risk assess allergies?! #alwayscarrytwo @campaign42AAI Click To Tweet Angela’s 3 top tips for dealing with allergy anxiety:

With the summer here I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about travelling and the importance of being allergy safe and allergy smart. First I'll be talking about how NOT to travel and then I'll have a special message for the teenage boys with allergies.
What You'll Learn: I have been lucky enough to do quite a lot of travelling over the last 10 years, both with family and as an adult. I’ve done the nice travelling on planes with luggage and staying hotels and I’ve also done the whole backpacking thing staying in hostels, eating cheap food and basically slumming it. But when it comes to allergies you have to take some precautions and make some preparations. I’m not going to bore you with a list of must do’s, instead I’m going to do something different. Let's talk about what NOT to do. I'll also be talking about what happens when you ignore your allergy and another way to think about it.

Today’s show is a little different from our usual interview format. This episode is going to be much more informal because the weekend of July 7-9 was the Allergy & Free From Show at London Olympia. I was one of many exhibitors at the show and Alessandra Bester, founder of Functional Food Company, fellow exhibitor and past podcast guest suggested to me, why not do an episode talking about our experiences at the show. I thought well, that’s a great idea! The Allergy Shows are a big deal for exhibitors because it’s where we get to meet all of you. Alessandra and I talk about what it’s like preparing for the Allergy & Free From Show London. We chat about our experiences at the show, meeting listeners, customers, fans, and meeting new allergy families. We also chat about some of the other great exhibitors we met, products we tried and ask you what you think about us. After all your aim is to help people smile. We want to show that even when you have a restrictive diet because of allergies, intolerances, coeliac disease, IBS or other auto-immune diseases you can still live life and enjoy it! So your feedback is crucial to us! Please leave a comment below for us and tell us what you thought of the show?!

Today's Guest: Claire Fryer
A couple weeks ago Claire sent me this lovely email describing her journey with food allergies and intolerances. I was completely bawled over by how complicated the journey sounded but also how positive and up beat Claire is about it all. I also found that I was learning a huge amount during this interview, I loved chatting with Claire and hope you enjoy listening as much as I did!
What You'll Learn: Rather than my usual show notes, I wanted to share a quick summary of Claire’s story but in her own words. Here is the email she sent me a couple weeks ago and what told me I HAD to get this lady on the podcast pronto!
Hi Nina
I've just found your podcast and I'm really enjoying it. I heard you ask whether any listeners might have a story to share and I wondered if you might be interested in mine?
Here is a summary of the main issues I've encountered: (Background, I am 34, I eat a low FODMAP diet, and I have 2 children, one who is allergic to dairy and soya and intolerant to gluten, and another who is intolerant to dairy). I had an intolerance test at age 16 after 2 years of GI symptoms - came off dairy and felt better. (I suspect I've had issues with dairy all my life, my mum agrees when she describes me as a baby...) Suffered chronic pain and what I called a 'soft tissue issue' for most of my twenties. Discovered the contraceptive pill I was taking at this time had lactose in! Stopped the pill, no more chronic pain and the 'soft tissue issue' cleared up. (So much to talk about regarding the link between intolerances (and sugar consumption in general) and inflammation).
Had my children - various allergies and intolerances became evident in them. It has been interesting to raise them 'free from' in our society! I was recently advised to try the FODMAP diet - it was scary! But it has been revolutionary and I believe has been my issue all along (all the foods listed on my intolerance test age 16 are high FODMAP!)
Cooking for a family with such a diverse range of allergies - helping extended family understand how to cater for us, and carrying on with a relatively normal life/not making food intolerances and allergies a big deal (especially for the kids) I've recently tried extended fasting for gut health and that worked wonders for me. I also cut out sugar 2 years, 3 months ago, and we now raise our children sugar free in the home (they do occasionally have sugar in rare circumstances - it's interesting/challenging to get a balance!).
Challenging people's perceptions of how hard they think it is living free from! So hopefully you might think that there could be some useful and illuminating aspects of my experience which we could discuss to help other people on their own journey.
Let me know and I hope to be speaking with you soon!
Many thanks Claire x
Resources: When I asked Claire to send me the links she had mentioned in our chat, I just expected the links. But not only sending me the links she sent me the why and the what she found useful! So I asked whether I could post all of her words unedited, because it is just so much helpful to have a personal recommendation!
Here are Claire’s notes and links to the resources she found incredibly useful in her journey:
Low FODMAP cookbook from Emma at She Can't Eat What? is amazing: http://www.shecanteatwhat.com/about/ The Australian University which pioneered research into FODMAPs is THE place to go for information on what to avoid and what to eat. They have an app too which I've found to be well worth the money: http://www.med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/fodmap/low-high.html The FODMAP Friendly Vegan is a lovely site too: http://thefodmapfriendlyvegan.com Amazing resources on giving up sugar, the first one (IQS https://iquitsugar.com ) has fantastic cookbooks,

Over the last few weeks I’ve been speaking to lots of allergy parents, the adults in the allergy journey but today I’m talking to 2 allergy kids. I will be speaking to Luke and Jamie, identical twins but only one of them has a severe allergy. They will be telling me about their allergy journey and top tips for staying allergy safe.
What You'll Learn: Luke and Jamie tell me what’s it’s like living with allergies, how it’s just part of their everyday life, “it’s very normal really.” Jamie tells me how he teaches his friends, checks ingredients labels, stays safe at restaurants and how he created the story of Tom’s Secret Agents. His brother Luke tells me what it’s like having a brother with severe allergies to nuts, pectin and other things and he helps keep his brother safe.
I also have a chat with their Mum, Karen. She tells me about Jamie’s journey to diagnosis and her approach to raising her boys. She talks me through how their family educated themselves and how she teaches Luke and Jamie to be allergy aware. We also chat about how Tom’s Secret Agents came about and the Allergy UK hero award.
Here are the questions I ask Luke and Jamie:
What are your names? How old are you? Who has allergies? What are they? What's it like having a brother with allergies? What's it like having allergies? Who do you keep allergy safe? How do you teach people about your allergy? What is "Tom's Secret Agents" about? Can you tell me about the Allergy UK Hero award? Please can you each tell me your 3 top tips for staying allergy safe?

Today’s podcast episode I mixed up a little. I decided, at the last minute, to do a Facebook live episode. I wanted to talk about how to tell other people about your allergies. I walk you through my 5 step method to stop being embarrassed and keep yourself or your allergic child safe.
What You'll Learn: All about my 5 Step Method: Step 1: Be Bold!
Feeling like you are inconveniencing another person can make us feel embarrassed. Asking another person, especially if you don’t know them very well to take steps outside of their usual routine in order to cater for you can make us feel nervous. But when it comes to your allergy, you need to set this aside and be bold, even if you don’t feel it.
You are your own allergy advocate. Be bold, step outside of your usual comfort zone and don’t think about what other people might think about you.
I remind myself that that no person’s feelings are as important as your life.
Step 2: Be Calm, Be Factual, Be Honest
Being calm is a lot easier said than done. Believe me, I know, I’ve been there! But even though it is a challenge to keep calm when someone is spouting nonsense about what they think they know about allergies, it is still essential. Why is it essential? Because when you are emotional at another person, they will become resistant to being open to understanding your position.
Think about it like this, if someone is flapping their arms in your face and getting more and more erratic, what do you want to do? You want to get away from them. You aren’t willing to listen. Through their erratic and emotional behaviour they elicited a resistance in you.
My goal when explaining about my allergy is to get other people to listen and follow my instructions to the letter so that my life is not put at risk. In order to give myself the best chance of success, I don’t want to alienate people before I’ve even started explaining.
When I do explain, I am factual and honest. There is no point playing it down, in the worst case it could be a life and death matter, so I need make others aware of this fact so that they take it seriously.
People need to understand WHY they need to take precautions. When I explain it calmly, factually and honestly people usually listen to my “why” more carefully and will take the appropriate precautions.
Step 3: Show People How Easy It Is
Once I have given people the facts, I need to lead by example. I need to continue to be vigilant in asking questions and checking ingredients, but I also show them that I don’t worry about missing out. I show them that maybe I can’t have one food, but I can have an alternative.
One of the best things about allergies is that you know what makes you sick. That means you know what to avoid! That’s what makes it easy to manage!
Step 4: Be Approachable
Like you may have felt a bit embarrassed to tell others about your allergy, carers/friends/family/etc may feel embarrassed to keep asking about what might or might not be safe.
I make sure that those people I’m trying to educate know that they can ask me as many times as they need to about what may or may not be safe. After all they may be terrified about sending me into hospital. Other people asking questions is great because it means they are being educated and more importantly wanting to be educated.
Step 5: You Can Say “NO”
Sometimes, even when I’ve gone through all the the above steps, there are some people I just don’t trust believe me or understand what I’m saying. You will probably know what I’m talking about, that allergy 6th sense. Trust this instinct. It will most likely be right. There is no point taking unnecessary risks with your life.
I always remember that I can say “no” to any food I don’t...

Today I talk with Alessandra Bester. Firstly, this episode is one of the most inspirational interviews I’ve done to date. Her journey has not been easy battling Coeliac Disease, IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer. She fought for her son’s life; battling his extreme food aversion, teaching him to live with autism, epilepsy and his food, environmental and chemical sensitivities. Alessandra is so humble and shows how strong you can be if you need to be.
What You'll Learn:
Alessandra Bester is the founder of Functional Food Company. She tells me about her personal complicated journey to health with Coeliac Disease, allergies, IBS, fibromalagia Chronic fatigue syndrome, low FODMAP diet, cancer and more. Alessandra tells me about her son, who is diagnosed with autism and epilepsy. She has found that she has needed to learn about and how learning about his health has also shown her about her health. We chat about the importance of eating fresh and wholesome foods especially when it came to curing her of cancer. Alessandra has had to do a lot of research into healing the gut. Alessandra and I talk about how stress, sugar and your environment can affect your body and especially your tummy. I listen as Alessandra tells me the story of healing her son. Up to the age of 5-7 years old Alessandra’s son was was unable to eat, anything that went into his tummy he was reacting to. He was constantly in pain. This led him to be frightened of food, he avoided it and this led to him to become anorexic. Science didn't have the answers, so Alessandra had to take her son’s health into her own hands. Taking gluten and other foods out of her son’s diet (such as onions, garlic, E numbers and more), Alessandra’s son started to became alert and happy again. However Alessandra’s journey didn’t end there. She talks me through discovering and managing her son’s environmental and chemical allergies and sensitivities. We talk about people’s different responses to allergies and the changes in attitudes over the last 15 years. We talk about the importance of looking after our health and taking ownership and an active role in maintaining healthy and happy bodies. Alessandra tells me the story of how Functional Food Company started (inspired by the treats she developed to get her son to eat).

This week I will be talking to both my parents. We chat about how they had to educate family and friends, whether allergies are a disability or not and how you can raise a confident allergy kid. What You'll Learn:
How do you talk to people who have to look after you child but who may not believe you: be blunt, explain that allergies and anaphylaxis is a medical condition Take action where you can be present, if you can’t then you have a choice. I people still don’t listen then it’s time to make a decision as to who your friends are No environment is safe, not about policing it’s about education. About educating other people and educating me (the allergy kid) How do you know how much to scare someone so that they listen? Is it about scaring them? It’s about being matter of fact about allergies and asking people to be reasonable and about being reasonable when you ask. About making people understand the importance of following allergy precautions. We discuss the question: are allergies a disability? How do you an enable an allergy child to be confident?
How you know you’ve raised your allergy kid right = when they start educating you, the parent! Click To Tweet

Training Callum was incredibly important: Honesty, giving him reasons why he couldn't have certain foods, teaching him about his allergies and the allergens in all their various forms. Nathalie talks about how she dealt with Callum’s serious food aversion through teaching him to cook It’s important to empower Callum and his peers Rather than banning allergens it’s about explain why certain precautions need to be taken.
