Coffee - how much coffee is the optimal amount to get all the health benefits, but avoid the negative side effects? What is „the tipping point”?

Coffee lovers, this topic is for you! We’ll explore the benefits of coffee, based on science. Is coffee good for you? This course is for everybody who wants to have a good relationship with ... coffee. Especially coffee lovers who want to know what to expect from this popular drink - what are the health benefits, how many cups of coffee a day they should drink to experience the most health benefits and what is the tipping point where the risks outweigh the benefits and caffeine start to affect your heart and overall health.

Coffee is the most popular beverage worldwide, with an estimated 3 billion cups consumed every day. If you're like most adults, caffeine is a part of your daily routine and a social habit. Coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of many conditions, with the greatest effects being at around 4–5 cups per day. It appears that coffee is generally safe as long as you're not a heavy drinker.

A new article from Harvard School of Public Health named “Caffeinated or not, coffee linked with longer life” shows that the compounds in coffee – the powerful antioxidants – show potential health benefits, the most notable being an increased life span. Studies have shown that up to 5 cups of coffee/day (or a total of 400 ml) is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. An increased quantity does not seem to offer additional health benefits.

The study analyzing data from about half a million Britons found that coffee consumption was linked to a 14% decrease in mortality rates, during the 10-year study period. An interesting finding is that it doesn’t matter if coffee is caffeinated or not, it’s the overall composition that matters – good quality coffee, freshly grounded and well-prepared, to keep its most nutrients. In two other very large studies, drinking coffee was associated with a 20% reduced risk of death in men and a 26% decreased risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years. So, it seems that up to 5 cups of coffee daily seems acceptable unless you have a particular condition (such as suffering from heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers ) or if your doctor advises otherwise. This is the power of antioxidants!

Coffee contains hundreds of bioactive compounds. It can be a single source of antioxidants for many people – those who do not eat a variety of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis.

The Superfoods for Brain Health, Memory Boost and Mental Performance There are superfoods that help with brain health and mental performance for all individuals! Greeny leaves such as spinach, broccoli, berries in general and blueberries in particular, the red grapes and red wine, the healthy fats found in avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, walnuts, salmon; also beans and lentils and some fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, and kombucha. Include them frequently in your eating habits, especially for breakfast, to start the day right!

And moving a bit further in this area, from what keeps the brain healthy and happy in healthy individuals, to a more sensitive topic: Eating to Remember - Foods that Delay Cognitive Decline

Mental disorders affect one in four people yearly. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables prevent cell damage from free radicals. Omega 3 fatty acids found in nuts and seeds, oily fish such as salmon, other healthy oils found in coconut oil, avocado, olive oil - also feed and protect the brain cells. The foods that keep our brain healthy – that we talked about in the previous topic - can also relieve mental health symptoms, slow down the aging process, delaying or mildening the symptoms of some brain dysfunctions. The right foods can preserve your brain’s health for the long run.

The conclusion? Eating high or moderate amounts of „brainy foods” is key for brain health, benefits ranging from memory boost, alertness, improved cognition, creativity; - they protect and relieve the symptoms of disorders such as anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders ; - and in the long term, offer brain protection and delay or ease the symptoms of some more serious conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.

The key to brain happiness? Develop a better relationship with „brainy foods”: greeny leaves, berries, healthy oils (avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, walnuts, chia seeds), fatty fish rich in omega 3 (salmon), beans and lentils, some fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, and kombucha. Important note: this information is for educational and awareness purposes only. It is not meant to diagnose or treat any condition related to mental health.

An article from the Mayo Clinic explores the relationship between foods and neurodegenerative delay. The observational studies suggest that diet can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by up to 53 percent as well as slow cognitive decline and improve verbal memory. The foods that offer the most benefits in dementia prevention include vegetables, especially leafy greens, berries, fish, nuts, beans, and whole grains.

Coffee lovers, this topic is for you! Coffee – from guilty indulgence and addiction to magical health elixir? Drink more coffee or caffeinated beverages – research from Harvard Business Review suggests that up to 5 cups of coffee/day (or a total of 400 ml) can increase your longevity. Another article from Harvard School of Public Health named “Caffeinated or not, coffee linked with longer life” shows that the compounds in coffee show potential health benefits, the most notable being an increased life span. So, the good news is that up to 5 cups of coffee daily is acceptable unless you have a particular condition (such as suffering from heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers – pronounce alsărs) or if your doctor advises otherwise. What do you think, coffee lovers? How many cups of coffee a day do you usually have?
