Ordination and Installation

Introductory Statement

Ordination Litany

Minister: Brenda Helmly, Rebecca Sutton, Heather Valentine, and Rich Wheeler have been called to serve this congregation in deacon ministry. Having answered your call to serve, they have signified their willingness to be ordained to minister in this capacity.

Congregation: We do, therefore, in the name and example of Jesus Christ, now proceed in the ordination, setting aside these four in service, leadership, and ministry.

Minister: Ordinands, you have shown your willingness to assume the responsibilities of this office, and because the deacon ministry is of such vital importance to the life of our church, we pose these basic questions: Do you profess Jesus Christ as the Way and seek to minister with Christ as the Head of the Church, which is Christ’s Body?

Ordinands: I do.

Minister: Do you profess the Scriptures of the Bible to be the God-inspired sourcebook and guide for study, faith, and practice?

Ordinands: I do.

Minister: Do you promise, by word and by example, to promote the peace, the unity, and the work of this church and of the Church universal?

Ordinands: I do.

Laying on of Hands

Anthem _Here I Am, Lord _ Ovid Young

Ordination Prayer

Installation Litany

Minister: All serving in the Diaconate in the coming year please stand. Do you accept the office of deacon in this congregation, and promise faithfully and according to your ability to provide leadership of a servant of Christ?

Diaconate: I do.

Minister: All who are able please stand. Congregation, these are the persons whom you have called to be your servant leaders. What promise do you make to them?

Congregation: We pledge to hold you and your ministry in this church in the highest esteem. We have taken seriously our choice of you. We desire that you lead us with courage, conviction, and compassion.

Diaconate: We are honored and humbled by this display of your confidence in our capacity to be servants of this people. We pledge to you that we will bear that trust responsibly.

Congregation: We charge you to give unselfishly to the wellbeing of our church. Be interpreters of our ministry to one another, to this community, and to the world. Be prophets calling us to the hard truths we sometimes would rather dismiss or forget. Be friends to us in times of crisis and change. Be pastoral to us in our joys and in our sorrows.

Diaconate: With the care of our Creator, the strength of the Christ, and the presence of the Spirit, we will do our best.

Hymn 281 _Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah _cwm rhondda

Affirmation of Faith

We thank God for the gift of creation called forth by the words, "Let there be…” Before the world had shape and form, God's Spirit moved over the waters. Out of the waters of the deep, God brought forth the earth to sustain all life.

In the time of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, God's people Israel passed through the Red Sea waters from slavery to freedom and crossed the flowing Jordan to enter the promised land. In the fullness of time, God sent Jesus Christ who was nurtured in the water of Mary’s womb. Jesus was baptized by John in the water of the Jordan, became living water to a woman at the Samaritan well, washed the feet of the disciples, and sent them forth to baptize all nations by water and the Holy Spirit.

It is this God in whom we find life, meaning, love, and affirmation. We place our faith and hope in God, the Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit, who uses water to renew and to give life to all of us, God's beloved children.

Love’s great promise, born long ago in a manger,
Not with the sounds of the cymbal and drum, but the silence of stars.

Long awaited one, unknown and yet not a stranger,
Came as a humble and holy child, yet a great and glorious king!

For such a gift sing “Alleluia!” Hope born within a lowly stall,

The incarnate love of God was sent for all.

Affirmation of Faith

We are not alone, we live in God’s world and we worship the One who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others through the Spirit.

We are relational beings, called to be with and for one another. In gathering at the table, we are communing with our Triune God and we are communing with one another.

We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, to remember the life, ministry, and love of the One we follow.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.

We are an Advent people, a people of love. For us, Advent is a time of waiting, and so we wait. We wait for the coming of the One who is the fulfillment of God’s promise, the fulfillment of hope, the declaration that all have been redeemed.

We know that the world in which we live will continue to be filled with pain and sorrow. We know that hatred and violence will continue to exist. We know that death and separation will continue to be a part of our lives.

But because we are an Advent people, we know that love will win in the end. The Holy One is always coming, to make this world home, to make this world whole, all that was, is, and ever will be.

And in our waiting and our hoping, we work and worship, pray and play, in all things hoping that peace, love, and joy will reign in our lives and in our world, now and forever.

Hymn 31 _Hark! The Herald Angels Sing _MENDELSSOHN

Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God, the creator and giver of life, who brought all creation to birth, who mothers us and fathers us, protecting, nurturing, and cherishing us.

We believe in Jesus Christ: God born among us as a fragile baby, embodying both love and the need for love, and calling us to rest in God as trustingly as a tiny child.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, breathed into us at our birth,

always drawing us on to be born again, encouraging, exhorting, comforting, nourishing our growth and inspiring our living.

And we believe that each new child is a glimpse of the face of God, a sign of the life to come, and a call to live in peace and celebrate living together.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God's people on earth!

(The text is by Nathan Nettleton and Kathy Galloway)

Invocation Rev. Katie Callaway

†Hymn 20 Watchman, Tell Us of the Night aberystwyth

*Affirmation of Faith

We are an Advent people, a people of peace.

(The text is by Rev. Rebecca F. Harrison)

*Affirmation of Faith

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

(Psalm 23 KJV)
