About he Shaolin Way: 10 Modern Secrets of Survival from a Shaolin Kung Fu Grandmaster Paperbac
Born in the projects of Spanish Harlem to a disabled mother and an abusive father, Steve DeMasco spent most of his childhood lost and angry. Drifting from one job to another, he stalked the streets as a troubled youth, barely surviving while all of his peers were either dead or in jail, until he found himself on the steps of the Shaolin Temple.
Originating more than 1,500 years ago in ancient China, the Shaolin monks were simple farmers and worshippers of Buddhism who learned to protect themselves from the constant danger of bandits and overlords with a kind of "meditation in motion," a nonlethal form of self-defense that didn't violate their vows of peace. As their legend grew, they became known as the Shaolin Fighting Monks, revered across the land for their spiritual dedication, enlightened message, and amazing fighting skills.
DeMasco entered the Shaolin Temple to battle the demons of his past. But he got more than he bargained for. Besides learning how to wield weapons and take on multiple attackers at once, he discovered an ancient philosophy that helped melt away preconceived notions of the world, and gave him a powerful platform on which to live and grow. In The Shaolin Way, he adapts these teachings for the modern world, singling out ten secrets of survival that can help anyone live a more fulfilled life.

About The Case for Medicare for All
Largely privately funded with relatively little public regulation, the United States healthcare system is both expensive and inefficient, providing poor care to large parts of the population. For decades, Americans have wrestled with how to fix their broken healthcare system. In this razor-sharp contribution to the healthcare debate, leading economist and former adviser to Bernie Sanders Gerald Friedman recommends that we build on what works: a Medicare system that already efficiently provides healthcare for millions of Americans. Rejecting the discredited idea that healthcare should be treated like any other commodity, Friedman shows that healthcare is distinctive and can be best provided only through universal program of social insurance. Deftly exposing the absurdities of the opponents of reform, Friedman shows in detail how the solution to our health care crisis is staring us in the face: enroll everyone in Medicare to improve the health of all Americans. This bold and brilliantly argued book is essential reading for anyone who wants to see Congress and the White House act to provide America with a 21st century healthcare system.

About Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine
Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has long been on the cutting edge of medicine and science, challenges our current healthcare paradigm which has gone off the rails under the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government.
You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what the problem is. One of Lustig’s singular gifts as a communicator is his ability to “connect the dots” for the general reader, in order to unpack the scientific data and concepts behind his arguments, as he tells the “real story of food” and “the story of real food.”
Metabolical weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them:
Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itself
You can diagnose your own biochemical profile
Chronic diseases are not "druggable," but they are "foodable"
Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictive
The war between vegan and keto is a false war—the combatants are on the same side
Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side
Making the case that food is the only lever we have to effect biochemical change to improve our health, Lustig explains what to eat based on two novel criteria: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what’s needed to fix all three.

About La Luz Center
In 1985, the wine industry was booming in Sonoma Valley. Hundreds of workers were hired from Mexico, Central and South America to work in the vineyards. On weekends they attended church where they met Ligia Booker. Born in Colombia to a large philanthropic family, Ligia saw Sonoma Valley through the eyes of an immigrant. She learned that the vineyard worker families had basic unmet needs like language skills and access to food, clothing and housing; assistance with medical, legal and financial issues presented more complicated, longer term challenges.
Ligia and a group of Sonoma residents came together to provide needed assistance and began to call themselves La Luz, Spanish for “The Light”. Over the years, La Luz Center has expanded capabilities through strong community partnerships and a talented, resourceful La Luz staff that now delivers a wide-range of programs, services and responsive support to families in Sonoma Valley.
Ligia understood the unique relationship between the people of The Springs and the economy of Sonoma Valley. The Latino community, now comprising approximately 28% of the Sonoma Valley population and 58% of our public school enrollment, significantly contributes to the vitality of the Valley. La Luz Center continues to bring “The Light” to Sonoma Valley residents and we invite you to explore our website to learn more about current La Luz Center partnerships, services, and programs.

About Bicycling with Butterflies: My 10,201-Mile Journey Following the Monarch Migration
Outdoor educator and field researcher Sara Dykman made history when she became the first person to bicycle alongside monarch butterflies on their storied annual migration—a round-trip adventure that included three countries and more than 10,000 miles. Equally remarkable, she did it solo, on a bike cobbled together from used parts. Her panniers were recycled buckets. In Bicycling with Butterflies, Dykman recounts her incredible journey and the dramatic ups and downs of the nearly nine-month odyssey. We’re beside her as she navigates unmapped roads in foreign countries, checks roadside milkweed for monarch eggs, and shares her passion with eager schoolchildren, skeptical bar patrons, and unimpressed border officials. We also meet some of the ardent monarch stewards who supported her efforts, from citizen scientists and researchers to farmers and high-rise city dwellers. With both humor and humility, Dykman offers a compelling story, confirming the urgency of saving the threatened monarch migration—and the other threatened systems of nature that affect the survival of us all.

About Telehealth
What does telehealth mean?
Telehealth — sometimes called telemedicine — is the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to provide care when you and the doctor aren’t in the same place at the same time. If you have a phone or a device with internet access, you already have everything you need to get medical care or services through telehealth — you may be able to:
Talk to your doctor live over the phone or video chat.
Send and receive messages from your doctor using chat messaging, email, secure messaging, and secure file exchange.
Use remote patient monitoring so your doctor can check on you at home. For example, you might use a device to gather ECG or other vitals to help your doctor stay informed on your progress.

About A Family Guide To Covid
In A Family Guide to Covid, William A. Haseltine answers tough questions about Covid-19 honestly, with equal measures of clarity and compassion.
A new disease has spread across our world. Schools have shut down, people around the world have been asked to stay home, businesses are shuttered, economies are crashing.
The sad state of affairs is not entirely new for Dr. Haseltine who remembers how polio overshadowed his young life. As he got older, he realized that diseases didn't just harm individuals, they crippled communities and devastated entire countries. He became a scientist, dedicating his life to understanding the diseases that threaten us most and figuring out ways to stop and prevent them.
Today, Dr. Haseltine finds that his children, his grandchildren and many of his friends and extended family members are coming to him with question after question. Why have our lives changed? Are my children in danger? When will this be over? Will there be a vaccine or a cure and if so, when? When will our lives return to normal?
This book attempts to answer those questions about COVID-19 honestly, with equal measures of clarity and compassion. It is written especially for those who are faced with the difficult task of not only protecting themselves, but of protecting their families, their children, their spouses, and their parents.
Split into two sections, the first section seeks to give answers to questions that children and grandchildren may ask. Each question has in fact been asked by someone under twelve, some as young as four and five. The second section provides short answers to many of the difficult questions adults from ages eighteen to one hundred and ten ask themselves to understand this new reality. Again these are real questions people have asked.
As our understanding of Covid-19 evolves, so too will this book. When a purchase is made, readers will be given entry to a password protected section of Dr. Haseltine's website. There, readers can download subsequent editions freely and have the most up to date answers to the most critical Covid questions of the day.
As Dr. Haseltine sees it, "Our children and grandchildren will one day look back as I do and remember a time when disease stalked the streets and changed their life. My hope is that some of those children will be inspired to dedicate their lives to science and medicine so that their own children and grandchildren and for that matter no child anywhere should have to endure what they did."

About Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience from a Burn Survivor
At the age of four, Dr. Lise Deguire suffered third-degree burns on 65% of her body as the result of both maternal and corporate negligence. Against the odds, she lived through the trauma, beginning decades of treatment as a burn survivor. Some chapters of this gripping journey focus on early events, including the story of the fire, her years of painful surgeries in the hospital, social isolation and bullying. Other chapters focus on her adult life, such as her struggles to find romantic love, being a parent, and her work as a clinical psychologist. Dr. Deguire recounts her childhood with two narcissistic parents and their futile struggles to find happiness. She tells the tragic story of her family, which includes artistic genius, stark neglect, and four suicides. Most importantly, she explains her long but ultimately triumphant path towards love, health, and life satisfaction. The voice of Flashback Girl is warm and engaging. Despite the seriousness of the subject, the tone of the book is positive and humorous, without self-pity. The aim is to inspire those who suffer to keep pushing on. If the author can make it, despite the tremendous odds against her, there is hope for all.

About Blood on the Wall National Geographic Documentary
The film primarily follows two parties hoping to make it past the US border. There’s Ludy, a seventeen-year-old girl with no family who has been a rape victen in Guatemala and is traveling with her boyfriend in the caravan for protection. The other focus is on a mother named Sara and her large family of kids ranging from teenagers to a toddler. Their long and perilous journey is chronicled as they desperately fight for their survival.
This two-hour documentary juxtaposes their stories against background information of how life south of the border has evolved into its current hostile state and the USA’s involvement in it. The film is somewhat bookended by a heroin runner in Arizona, a US resident who isn’t nervous every time she goes through border patrol on her way in and out. The history of how heroin and crack production became a way of life and a source of power is well documented throughout the film.

About The Nature of Nature
Enric Sala wants to change the world--and in this compelling book, he shows us how. Once we appreciate how nature works, he asserts, we will understand why conservation is economically wise and essential to our survival. Here Sala, director of National Geographic's Pristine Seas project (which has succeeded in protecting more than 5 million sq km of ocean), tells the story of his scientific awakening and his transition from academia to activism--as he puts it, he was tired of writing the obituary of the ocean. His revelations are surprising, sometimes counterintuitive: More sharks signal a healthier ocean; crop diversity, not intensive monoculture farming, is the key to feeding the planet.Using fascinating examples from his expeditions and those of other scientists, Sala shows the economic wisdom of making room for nature, even as the population becomes more urbanized. In a sober epilogue, he shows how saving nature can save us all, by reversing conditions that led to the coronavirus pandemic and preventing other global catastrophes. With a foreword from Prince Charles and an introduction from E. O. Wilson, this powerful book will change the way you think about our world--and our future.

About Dr. David Hanscom
Dr. Hanscom is an orthopedic complex spinal deformity surgeon who was based in Seattle, WA. He quit his surgical practice in 2018 of over 32 years to focus on teaching people how to break the grip of chronic mental and physical pain. His mission is to re-introduce true healing into medicine. He feels that doctors should be given the time to listen and understand their patients. Difficult life situations surrounding their medical problems have a tremendous impact on care and outcomes.
He was part of the movement that began in the 1980’s that espoused that persistent low back pain (LBP) was best solved with surgery. However, he happened to combine forces with several national-level rehabilitation physicians early in his career and quickly noticed that patients were having better outcomes when surgery was combined with a thoughtful rehab approach. When the data came out in 1993 that the success rate for a fusion for LBP was less than 30% at two-year follow up, he immediately stopped performing the procedure. In the meantime, he descended into his own deep pit of suffering from severe chronic pain for 15 years. It began with a panic attack and he eventually developed 17 different physical symptoms. He didn’t understand what hit him, and no one could offer an explanation.

About Exercise is Medicine
Aging, despite its dismal reputation, is actually one of the great mysteries of the universe. Why don't we just reproduce, then exit fast, like salmon? Could aging just be one big evolutionary accident? Is senescence, the gradual falling apart of our bodies, at least partially avoidable? Can we extend the healthy lifespan and reduce the lingering, debilitating effects of senescence? In this book, investigative health journalist Judy Foreman suggests that we actually can, and the key element is exercise, through its myriad effects on dozens of molecules in the brain, the muscles, and other organs. It's no secret, of course, that exercise is good for you and that exercise can extend longevity. What Foreman uncovers through extensive research into evolutionary biology, exercise physiology, and the new field of geroscience is exactly why exercise is so powerful - the mechanisms now being discovered that account for the vast and varied effects of exercise all over the body. Though Foreman also delves into pills designed to combat aging and so-called exercise "mimetics," or pills that purport to produce the effects of exercise without the sweat, her resounding conclusion is that exercise itself is by far the most effective, and safest, strategy for promoting a long, healthy life. In addition to providing a fascinating look at the science of exercise's effects on the body, Foreman also provides answers to the most commonly asked practical questions about exercise.

St. John’s, A Refuge for Health
We live in an era where it is standard practice to attack the basic civil and human rights of immigrants; separate children from their families at the border; deny asylum without trial; imprison immigrants for extended periods of time in dilapidated detention facilities; allow immigrant children to die without medical care while in our custody; and shut down the federal government over a wall that should not and will not ever be built.
At St. John’s, we have seen firsthand the fear these human rights violations have created. Adolescents caring for and bringing in their younger siblings for annual physicals or medical visits because their parents have been deported. Patients asking for extra bottles of their diabetes medication so they have a reserve, or requesting copies of their children’s medical records so they have them should they be deported. Or hundreds of patients running out of our waiting room because of a rumor that immigration authorities were arresting people “around the corner” from the clinic.

About Occupy the Economy: Challenging Capitalism
Today’s economic crisis is capitalism’s worst since the Great Depression. Millions have lost their jobs, homes and healthcare while those who work watch their pensions, benefits and job security decline. As more and more are impacted by the crisis, the system continues to make the very wealthy even richer. In eye-opening interviews with prominent economist Richard Wolff, David Barsamian probes the root causes of the current economic crisis, its unjust social consequences, and what can and should be done to turn things around. While others blame corrupt bankers and unregulated speculators, the government, or even the poor who borrowed, the authors show that the causes of the crisis run much deeper. They reach back to the 1970s when the capitalist system itself shifted, ending the century-old pattern of rising wages for U.S. workers and thereby enabling the top 1% to become ultra-rich at the expense of the 99%. Since then, economic injustice has become chronic and further corrupted politics. The Occupy movement, by articulating deep indignation with the whole system, mobilizes huge numbers who seek basic change. Occupying the Economy not only clarifies and analyzes the crisis in U.S. capitalism today, it also points toward solutions that can shape a far better future for all.

About One-Moment Meditation: Stillness for People on the Go
Think of all the moments you "lose": stuck in traffic, standing in line, waiting for a download. And think of all the moments you "waste": working when you're not focused, or fiddling with your phone. What if each of these moments offered you an extraordinary opportunity? In One-Moment Meditation, Martin Boroson distils the philosophy of time into a simple form of meditation that you can do anywhere, anytime. It begins with an exercise that takes just one minute per day. With practice, this takes less and less time, until it takes no time at all. Then each and every moment gives you a chance to reduce stress, refresh your mind, and open yourself to new possibilities. Playful, profound, and above all, practical, One-Moment Meditation teaches you that inner peace is not a distant goal reserved for saints and sages, and it doesn't take a lot of time: it only takes a moment.

A lesbian left-wing journalist who’d covered revolutions around the world, Miles didn’t discover a religion that was about angels or good behavior or piety; her faith centered on real hunger, real food, and real bodies. Before long, she turned the bread she ate at communion into tons of groceries, piled on the church’s altar to be given away. About Your Immortal Body of Light
"My name is Mitchell." Thus begins, Your Immortal Body of Light, a fascinating and true story that takes Mitchell E. Gibson, M.D. out of his ordinary consciousness and into the inner realms of his being. Dr. Gibson was Chief Resident in Psychiatry at a large inner city medical center when he began his journey, expanding his consciousness using meditation. On his quest, he actually encounters an ancient 'god of healing' known as Djehuti (pronounced Dee-jan-tee), or Thoth. Being a psychiatrist, Gibson more than wavered before accepting that he was indeed speaking with an actual entity but the experience persisted and eventually Djehuti revealed profound information to Gibson, about the formation of the soul and the causes of mental illness. Your Immortal Body of Light is a credible and highly readable adventure into the land of magic and miracles invoked by meditation. Not since the release of Tranceformers: Shamans of the 21st Century by John Jay Harper has there been such a heartfelt sharing of what it means to be contacted by a "deceased" colleague and how to apply those insights to understanding the physics and metaphysics of creation. In this book the author travels beyond the illusive veil of "reality" to bridge the gap between cultures and centuries. Dr. Gibson reveals how Words of Power invoke transformation in body-mind-spirit as scholar Jeremy Naydler declared in Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred. "It is no coincidence that Thoth, the Lord of Speech, who in the Beginning uttered the primordial sounds that thickened into tangible substances and thus brought the world into existence, was also the originator of writing." That is, your world will never be the same once you put these writings into practice to create a life that is a dream come true too. Both fascinating and chilling this is not your everyday spiritual awakening story. Lee Levinson, Emmy Winning Television Producer "Your Immortal Body of Light" is alternatively a sensitive and compelling portrait of one man's spiritual and emotional journey into the unknown. The author's recounting of his personal experiences are reflected in outstanding visual sequences and dramatic character interaction that make this true story resonate with an air of authenticity that will impact audiences everywhere. Five Stars Highly Recommended... Kirkus Reviews "Nourishing soul food for the spiritually inclined."

He explains how electromagnetic energy flows in your body and affects your cells, and how the new fields of energy medicine and energy psychology can help cases that are beyond the reach of conventional medicine. He shows how your hormonal, neurological, connective tissue, and neutrotransmitter systems all work in harmony to conduct a coordinated flow of information throughout your body. In addition, trapped emotions can exert a dramatic effect on how you think, the choices that you make, and how successful you will be. Perhaps the most important discovery that Dr. Nelson has made is that trapped emotional energies will often gather around the heart, creating a "Heart-Wall" that may block you from giving and receiving love freely. The Emotion Code is a powerful and simple way to rid yourself of unseen baggage. Releasing trapped emotions often results in the sudden disappearance of physical problems, self-sabotage, and recurring relationship difficulties. Filled with real-world examples from many years of clinical practice, The Emotion Code is a distinct and authoritative new work that is destined to become an instant classic on self-healing.

About Capture: Unraveling the Mystery of Mental Suffering
Why do we think, feel, and act in ways we wished we did not? For decades, New York Times bestselling author Dr. David A Kessler has studied this question with regard to tobacco, food, and drugs. Over the course of these investigations, he identified one underlying mechanism common to a broad range of human suffering. This phenomenon—capture—is the process by which our attention is hijacked and our brains commandeered by forces outside our control.

About Loneliness Has an Antidote: The Feeling of Closeness
Loneliness isn’t something that happens only when we are physically alone. It can also happen when we are with people. Online friends, followers, or “likers” don’t necessarily add up to much when you crave fulfilling interaction, and satisfying, long-term relationships are not a mystery to be left up to chance (or technology). The good news is that, according to relationship coach Kira Asatryan, loneliness has a reliable antidote: the feeling of closeness. We can and should cultivate closeness in our relationships using the steps outlined in this book: knowing, caring, and mastering closeness.

About A Return to Healing: Radical Health Care Reform and the Future of Medicine
For several decades, a rapidly emerging person-centered medical paradigm has catalyzed a renaissance in the understanding of lifelong wellness, and this timely book presents the inspiring story of this new medicine, revealing how it can unlock the door to a health care system that works for all Americans. This resource explains how corporatized medicine only gets to work once disease occurs, while integrative medicine prioritizes prevention and noninvasive treatments as the first line of defense, blending the best-evidenced solutions from both mainstream and alternative healing modalities. It argues that single-payer national health insurance is a necessary but insufficient solution and suggests a genuine return to healing by combining regulatory reform with support for a transformed medical paradigm. Rich with the latest research in both biomedical science and health care policy, this is a superb guide to the future of medicine.

In today's disconnected, distracted world, it seems like deep love gets harder to maintain every day. We spend more time looking at screens than at each other, cycle through new partners every time the spark starts to fade, and wall away our feelings until we become strangers who share a house and kids. But underneath all this, our souls long for an unbreakable love which deepens over time and lovemaking that gets hotter, not cooler, inside a lifetime commitment.

Dr. Julia Brody and her team at the Silent Spring Institute in Massachusetts are well-known pioneers in exploring linkages between toxic chemicals exposures and breast cancer, prompted by the high incidence of breast cancer in Cape Cod. Upholding the legacy of Rachel Carson in exploring how environmental threats contribute to disease incidence, Brody has produced compelling results from her work in Cape Cod. Recent work has brought her team to Richmond and Bolinas where the team as tested a number of homes for the presence of toxic chemicals in indoor and outdoor air. Householders in both towns found the results surprising. Like most people, they assumed that exposures to toxicants occurred primarily if one were to live near an industrial area, a military facility or near the site of some sort of chemical accident.

About Boycott! The Academy And Justicefor Palestine
This title is part of American Studies Now and available as an e-book first. Visit ucpress.edu/go/americanstudiesnow to learn more.
The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS) has expanded rapidly though controversially in the United States in the last five years. The academic boycott of Israeli academic institutions is a key component of this movement. What is this boycott? Why does it make sense? And why is this an American Studies issue? In this short essential book, Sunaina Maira addresses these key questions. Boycott! situates the academic boycott in the broader history of boycotts in the United States as well as in Palestine and shows how it has evolved into a transnational social movement that has spurred profound intellectual and political shifts. It explores the movement’s implications for antiracist, feminist, queer, and academic labor organizing and examines the boycott in the context of debates about Palestine, Zionism, race, rights-based politics, academic freedom, decolonization, and neoliberal capitalism.

Partnering with Nature: The Wild Path to Reconnecting with the Earth
In today’s world, it’s often too easy to forget about the world outside the window. People struggle daily with stressful jobs, trapped under fluorescent lighting, staring at glowing screens, or surrounded by concrete when they could be outdoors, acknowledging the gifts of natural world. In the face of its absence, we are finally beginning to understand that our connection with nature—plants, trees, animals, and the energy of the earth itself—is more than a luxury; it is a necessary and vital part of our existence. In Partnering with Nature, Catriona MacGregor weaves together historical, spiritual, and scientific examples to emphasize the importance of creating a vital relationship with our natural surroundings. Our separation from nature leads to several devastating effects, whether through stress, feeling a lack of purpose, or the heedless destruction of our environment. Through her exploration of the energies that link humans, animals, and the natural world, she shows how we can learn from nature as we develop our spirituality and ourselves. Through diverse approaches, Catriona offers the reader a solid understanding of why a connection with the Earth is vital to our existence, and how a revival of that connection opens doors to a myriad of benefits in our environment and in our health, our daily lives, and our happiness.

About The Tao of Rejuvenation: Fundamental Principles of Health, Longevity, and Essential Well-Being
Throughout history Taoists, Christians, the yogis of northern India, and others have learned that the secret of longevity and even bodily rejuvenation lies in unlocking the body's own healing "somas" (or higher chemistry). Traditionally, however, the principles and techniques behind their discoveries have been hidden, transmitted only from teacher to student. Fortunately, these esoteric secrets are but the ultimate expression of a time-tested body of traditional healing wisdom that has taken strong root in the Western world, where it has been clarified and amplified by a new generation of healers and spiritual practitioners. The Tao of Rejuvenation is an inspiring and very well-written guide to the underlying principles and basic practices essential to our ability to not only achieve longevity and bodily rejuvenation, but also to lead a vital, balanced, and happy life. Written in a clear, rational, and highly readable style, it is a book that speaks to all modern men and women ready and willing to assume responsibility for their own destiny.

Based on Gabor Mate’s two decades of experience as a medical doctor and his groundbreaking work with the severely addicted on Vancouver’s skid row, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts radically reenvisions this much misunderstood field by taking a holistic approach. Dr. Mate presents addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs throughout (and perhaps underpins) our society; not a medical "condition" distinct from the lives it affects, rather the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional, and neurological development, brain chemistry, and the drugs (and behaviors) of addiction. Simplifying a wide array of brain and addiction research findings from around the globe, the book avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting a thorough and compassionate self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness.

About the Author
Born and raised in the small town of Millry, Alabama, Tory Minus is a proud mother of 4 and Founder and Executive Director of the Alabama Institute of Medicine (AIM). She also played an instrumental role in the formation and passing of the TJ Atchison Spinal Cord Injury Research Act, also known as "TJ's Law," which provides funding for spinal cord injury research in Alabama. Because of personal events involving family illness, Tory saw that while significant progress has been made for some clinical research in the southeast, there is a tremendous lack of funding and education for progressive regenerative medicine therapies. Tory continues to be an active advocate for further education on the benefits of stem cell research.
About Inevitable Collision: The Inspiring Story That Brought Stem Cell Research to Conservative America
On September 25, 2010, Tory Minus received the devastating news that a family friend, 21-year-old TJ Atchison, had been in a terrible automobile accident and, despite thorough care, was paralyzed from the chest down. Based on many factors surrounding TJ's condition, doctors determined he was the perfect candidate for a new clinical trial using a drug containing embryonic stem cells that was designed to regenerate damaged spinal cord tissue. This was the first trial of its kind to involve a human candidate, and would end up being the start of Tory's courageous journey to document this clinical trial and raise awareness and funding for embryonic stem cells research across the nation, especially to those within "conservative" America.

About Through the Flames: Overcoming Disaster Through Compassion, Patience, and Determination
After miraculously surviving a plane crash in Myanmar, Allan Lokos shares what his long and painful recovery process is teaching him about humanity’s ability to survive—and even thrive—in the face of suffering.
In Through the Flames, Allan Lokos tells the terrifying story of being on board a plane on Christmas Day with his wife, Susanna, when it crashed and exploded in flames. Lokos was severely burned in the accident, and in the days and weeks following the crash, Susanna was told by the many doctors who examined Lokos that he would not survive.
As founder and guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York City, Lokos had spent decades cultivating compassion and non-attachment. Since the plane crash, his Buddhist practice has been mightily tested. In this inspiring account of his against-all-odds recovery, Lokos uses his experience as a window through which to examine the challenge of human suffering in general and addresses the question of how we can thrive in the midst of pain and uncertainty.

Andy Couturier captures the texture of sustainable lives well lived in these ten profiles of ordinary—yet exceptional—men and women who left behind mainstream existences in urban Japan to live surrounded by the luxuries of nature, art, friends, delicious food, and an abundance of time. This intimate and evocative book tells of their fulfilling lives as artists, philosophers, and farmers who rely on themselves for happiness and sustenance. By inviting readers to enter into the essence of these individuals’ days, Couturier shows us how we too can bring more meaning and richness to our own lives.

About Dr. Thomas Cowan and Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor’s Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease
Thomas Cowan was a 20-year-old Duke grad―bright, skeptical, and already disillusioned with industrial capitalism―when he joined the Peace Corps in the mid-1970s for a two-year tour in Swaziland. There, he encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price―two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come.
Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was―and continues to be―practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice in New Hampshire and, later, San Francisco. For years, as he raised his three children, suffered the setback of divorce, and struggled with a heart condition, he remained intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner’s provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Determined to practice medicine in a way that promoted healing rather than compounded ailments, Cowan dedicated himself to understanding whether Steiner’s claim could possibly be true. And if Steiner was correct, what, then, is the heart? What is its true role in the human body?

About To Heal a Wounded Heart: The Transformative Power of Buddhism and Psychotherapy in Action
Early on in her clinical practice, psychoanalyst Pilar Jennings was presented with a particularly difficult case: a six-year-old girl who, traumatized by loss, had stopped speaking. Challenged by the limitations of her training to respond effectively to the isolating effect of childhood trauma, Jennings takes the unconventional path of inviting her friend Lama Pema—a kindly Tibetan Buddhist monk who experienced his own life-shaping trauma at a very young age—into their sessions. In the warm therapeutic space they create, the young girl slowly begins to heal. The result is a fascinating case study of the intersection of Western psychology and Buddhist teachings. Pilar’s story is for therapists, parents, Buddhists, or any of us who hold out the hope that even the deepest childhood wounds can be the portal to our capacity to love and be loved.

about Unretirement: How Baby Boomers Are Changing the Way We Think About Work, Community and the Good Life
The budget battles of recent years have amplified the warnings of demographic doomsayers who predicted that a wave of baby boomers would bleed America dry, bankrupting Social Security and Medicare as they faded into an impoverished old age. On the contrary, argues award-winning journalist Chris Farrell, we are instead on the verge of a broad, positive transformation of our economy and society.
