In this podcast series Canada’s History spoke with the finalists for the 2020 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award recognizes teachers from across the country for their exceptional work in teaching Canadian history. It is also an opportunity to promote and facilitate the sharing of best practices and innovative teaching ideas within Canada’s history education community.
In our interviews, the teachers gave insight into their teaching practices, reflected on their experiences adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, and sharing how they make history relevant to their students.

Chris Young is a teacher at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He led "Kelvin Remembers the Winnipeg General Strike", a four-week project that commemorated the strike's 100th anniversary.
David Lynch is a senior school teacher at the St. Michaels University School in Victoria, British Columbia. His “Through Their Eyes” project engages students with the historical thinking concepts as they explore Canada’s twentieth century history through the real-life experiences of (extra)ordinary Canadians.
Kristian Basaraba is a high school teacher in Sherwood Park, Alberta. His students are combining skateboard art with a history lesson on Indigenous culture and colonialism in an effort to raise awareness and increase discussions about reconciliation.
Tienneke Calder and Maureen Kelly-Gibson are educators at Calgary Academy in Calgary, Alberta. Their students participated in an interdisciplinary project based learning guided by the essential question "What actions can we take to further the spirit and intent of the journey of Reconciliation?".
Nathan Tidridge is a teacher at Waterdown District High School in Waterdown, Ontario. Over the past six years, he has used the Souharissen Natural Area as a foundation for land-based pedagogy that has engaged various cohorts of students, and members of the wider community, in projects built around the historical thinking pillars.
Dawn Martens is an elementary school teacher at Buchanan Park Public School in Hamilton, Ontario. To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, her students studies and performed Hans Krasa's opera, Brundibar.
Christina Ganev is a hybrid teacher-coach at East York Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario. She has developed the project, My Land/My Canada, My History, where students conduct research into their family heritage and/or immigration history, share cultural knowledge and ways of knowing, make connections to significant events in Canadian history, collect and record primary source stories in audio files, and explain the significance of cultural artifacts in a presentation to their peers.
Ian Duncan is a high school history teacher at Garth Webb Secondary School in Oakville, Ontario. He has developed a four-lesson module on LGBTQ2+ history in Canada.
