Gray’s Angus Ranch, Rod and Laura Gray and Family of Harrison is the new 2021 Nebraska Angus Producer of the Year.
Raising Registered Angus is a Family Tradition for the Gray’s. Rod’s great-great grandfather Starr Fuller had American Aberdeen Angus registries from Toledo, IA. dating 1898. Harry Gray, Rod’s grandpa purchased Angus cows from his wife’s father, Art Fuller and held Public Auctions of “Richly Bred Angus Cattle” in the 1940’s.
Wayne Gray, Rod’s dad, built the Angus cow herd to 400 registered females and sold bulls private treaty.
At the age of 15 Rod purchased his first bull from the “Champion Pen of 3” at Denver, a son of Ankonian President. Rod grew up active in the Iowa Jr. Angus Association, including serving as its President. He showed their own Angus breeding stock in 4-H, Progress Shows, IA State Fair, and the Denver Stock Show.

We met Steve and his son, Ryan, along with several others from the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketing Association at the Wichita Falls Ranch and Farm Expo in Texas. They were down as part of the relief efforts for the fires in the panhandle of Texas.

Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seed stock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences. Balancer animals are 25 to 75% Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the gelvy growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of the Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system.
We're talking the Keith Flake. He's a part in the Flake Ranches out south of Apache Junction.
We're squeezed in here just east of Apache Junction or Mesa, Gold Canyon area between Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Florence Junction. About 50 sections of state lease we don't own in acre and part of it's being developed. Part of it is overrun with recreationists. The desert floor is brilliant green.
How much rain did you get to get that grass cover?
As I recall about three 1 inch rains and the spacing was pretty good.
We figured the desert is going to make like crops, it's going to put on seed, but it comes fast and then when it turns 100 degrees, it goes fast.
The mesquite beans there may be some or when you get a year without any rain the trees don't put any beans?
Oh, it varies from year to year. I'll probably see the first bean in the middle of April and then it'll be another two or three weeks before there's much of a crop. We used to keep our to cows here year round and they were really bean harvesters. Beans are important to us. It's just not as important as they used to be when we were here year round.

I think that in the 10 years and I've been familiar with Blackwell and the Sylvarn is
the quality of cattle just keeps improving. It has. The drought in 2011-2012 we saw a
huge liquidation of herds in this area and when people, the producers who decided to
go back and get back in the business or to ramp up their herds to increase their herd
size, they didn't just go and increase their herd size with any old bull or any old cow.
They did it right. They went and found really good genetics. A lot of northern genetics
have come south in the last 20-30 years. They were able to get a hold of some of that and
they increased their genetics, the profitability of the cattle, the efficiency and I think that's
so important now watching every penny that is spent, watching the return on your dollar,
the return on your investment as those people in New York City to ROI's, the return on your
investment. They ranchers now see the importance of that simply because of the cost of feed,
cost of diesel fuel for crying out loud, cost of diesel, the cost of everything.

The TAM Beef Cattle Short Course is nationally and internationally recognized as the largest attended beef cattle educational program of its type in the world.
The Cattleman’s College features more than 20 concurrent sessions. Topics include animal health, nutrition, reproduction, breeding, genetics, selection, research, marketing and handling. Fantastic. Thanks so much for having me. About eight or nine years ago, our founders come from four or five generations of livestock producers. And when they returned home to their ranches, they found that there was really a difficulty with record keeping reporting and difficult to know everything that was in mum and dad's head. So when they went to make data driven or any decisions on the ranch, it was difficult to do. So when they went looking for kind of ranch management software, it came on a CDROM and it was very desktop based. And ultimately what ends up happening is it stays in the top drawer of the office and doesn't get used. What we've done over the last seven or eight years is set out to deliver a piece of software that works soft line. It's really simple to use. It's all based around the ranch map and hopefully encompasses everything that a rancher would want to record across their cattle and ranching business.

The fact that it works offline, I think that has got to be one of the greatest draws to this, because so many programs and apps don't work unless you're online. So this is not just cattle, it works for several species.
That's exactly right, and I guess I couldn't agree more with your first point. We found that a lot of our customers would be writing down records because they were offline, and then they had to sit at their computer at the end of a very long day, as you might well imagine, for most ranchers, and enter it into the computer. And that was such a barrier. So that is one of the first features we built, that and the ranch map. But yes, it works across multiple species, we really focus on red meat production, everything from cattle, sheep, bison, deer, you name it, we've got customers using it to manage their operations. And I guess more specifically, our focus is on your cow-calf and backgrounding operations here in the US. Obviously, there's some incredible software out there for feedlot management. Our focus is really on those cow-calf backgrounding operations.

I am very thankful for a rich family heritage and I know that I speak for my brother and five sisters in expressing how thankful we are for having such a great home life. We were all involved in 4-H and FFA and we loved showing cattle at our local county fair. We are especially thankful for how Mom and Dad made sure that during our growing up years we were given the opportunity to be with people and in places where good influences were present. My dad was a great example in character and integrity. He was an encourager in his own way and I think believed in me more than I believed in myself. While certainly not perfect, my dad has been a reflection of my Heavenly Father and His attributes. My family looks forward to being united with Dad one day based on the promise of 1 John 5:11-13.
