Episode Title:"Thyroid Cancer Awareness: Why Professionals Should Prioritize Their Health & PTO"

In this special episode of Jess Get Hired, I’m opening up about something deeply personal—my recent diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer. As Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I want to share my journey and talk about how important it is for busy professionals to take time for their health.

So often, we overlook small signs and symptoms, writing them off as stress or simply getting older. But my story is a reminder that even minor changes in your body can be signals of something more serious. In this episode, I talk about my experience, why we need to prioritize our health, and why taking PTO without guilt is so important.

Key Points Covered:* My journey: How a routine scan led to my thyroid cancer diagnosis. * Common thyroid cancer symptoms and why they’re often ignored. * The importance of early detection and routine checkups. * Why professionals need to take PTO and prioritize their health, guilt-free. * Important facts about thyroid cancer: It’s more common than you think and often treatable when caught early. * Action steps: How to perform a self-check, schedule annual visits, and use your health benefits to take care of yourself.

Important Thyroid Cancer Facts:* Thyroid cancer is the fastest-increasing cancer in both men and women. * Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer. * Most people don’t experience noticeable symptoms until it’s advanced. * Early detection through routine checkups can make a huge difference in treatment outcomes.

Take action today by scheduling that overdue checkup, performing a neck check, and making your health a priority. Don’t wait for something to go wrong—listen to your body and make time for yourself.

I also want to give a quick shoutout to Magic Mind, which has been an essential part of my routine lately. With everything going on, it's helped me stay focused and energized. Episode 53: Take your damn PTO already! I just spent 10 straight days unplugged to be out of the office and celebrating my birthday! This episode will give you tips on how to enjoy your time away from the office and not feel guilty about it.

In a world that glorifies constant connection and communication, I've always been known as someone who can't sit still. My work consumes me, and even when I'm not officially working, I find myself creating more tasks to fill my time. So when I mention taking a vacation, it's met with a great deal of skepticism, especially from those who know me well. Not many believe that I know how to truly detach myself from work. I've always strived to strike a delicate balance between "working a little bit" and "being on PTO." But this time, I made a conscious decision to unplug completely, without allowing guilt to seep in for not immediately answering emails, returning phone calls, or responding to messages.

In today's fast-paced world, taking time off from work has become essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. But, many professionals struggle with guilt and anxiety when it comes to being out of the office. So here are some tips you will hear in this episode:

  • Just Unplug!

PTO doesn't just stand for Paid time off - it also stands for "prepare the others." I will share some tips to ensure a smooth transition during your absence.

  • Remember, You Earned it!

Make the most of your vacation and learn to disconnect. Engage in self-care, and explore the world around you!

  • Coming back to work doesn't have to suck!

Organize your inbox and avoid the "first day back blues." Think about what you learned or how you felt while you were away from the office and use that as your motivation to infuse new ideas into the work that you do!

Taking care of yourself isn't saying "me first," it also means saying it's about "me...too."

Being out of the office is not just a luxury. It's a necessity. If you want to maintain a sense of sanity and healthy work-life balance, just take your d*mn PTO already and enjoy the hell out of it!

Episode 48 of the Jess Get Hired Podcast features Gary Ross, President and CEO of Inside Comms. In this episode, we are going to discuss one of the most challenging aspects of communication in the workplace: handling difficult conversations, or as we like to call them, "Tough Talks."In this episode, Gary and Jessica will go over how to approach and navigate these types of conversations with ease and confidence. Some of the things you will hear: Identify the objective of the conversation. Before you engage in any difficult conversation, it's important to identify the objective of the discussion. What do you hope to achieve from the conversation? Is it to resolve a conflict or to provide feedback? Knowing the objective will help you stay focused and on track during the conversation. Decide on how and when to communicate the message. Once you have identified the objective, it's time to decide on how and when to communicate the message. Choose a time and place that is private, quiet, and free of distractions. Consider the other person's schedule and make sure they have enough time to engage in the conversation. Determine what you want in the end and how to follow up. After the conversation, it's important to follow up and check in on the other person. This will show that you are committed to resolving the issue and maintaining a positive relationship. Fired, furloughed, or reduced in force - all of this means you're out of a job, and the uncertainty of what comes next hits home. I've gone through all three of these in my life, and each time was an opportunity to try something new. Don't get me wrong, it's scary to think about how you'll provide for your family, pay the bills, and even if you'll be able to find another job, but these things happen for a reason, and as unfortunate as the situation is, it gives you the opportunity to redefine who you are.Every morning when I open my laptop and scroll through LinkedIn, I see countless posts about another colleague or connection who has been laid off. Notwithstanding, it is also refreshing to see that with just one post, hundreds of other people are willing to help and support.I've been there - a lot of sleepless nights, anger, frustration, nervousness, and perhaps a little bit of excitement about what might happen next. When you lose your job for the first time, you have a lot of questions running through your head. "Why me?" "Could I have done something different?" "What am I going to do?"I've learned a few lessons from each time I've been fired, furloughed, or had my position eliminated, so I thought some of my life lessons might help someone else who is going through the same thing and wanted to share them with you.I will share a personal story about a time my position was eliminated and I will share a few of my lessons.  Here's a preview:   It sucks – You’ll be uncomfortable but don’t ruin relationships on the way out of the door. Your dreams, goals, and aspirations don’t have to end just because your job does. What can you do to reinvent yourself? Plan ahead – what can you do if your job does get eliminated – think creatively and think positively  Invest in yourself – time to focus on being a better version of you. Unemployed 2.0 – How will you upgrade? Why does outsourcing make sense in America, when so many jobs are being lost? With a recession looming and the cost of goods and services skyrocketing in the United States, many businesses can gain a competitive advantage by outsourcing in order to save their business, cut costs, and improve overall customer satisfaction. Technology, call centers, human resources, and manufacturing are some of the industries that frequently outsource. On this episode, I will introduce you a company that focuses primarily on the real estate industry, a niche that few people would consider outsourcing their work to. However, if you are a real estate investor, property manager, realtor, or broker, this solution may be worth considering! If you're interested in jobs abroad or working remotely, this is a discussion worth listening to. We will discuss the benefits of outsourcing as well as how to keep employees engaged when they are remote. Meet Greg Brooks:  Greg is the National Director of Business Development at Rocket Station, an outsourcing firm that assists businesses in hiring skilled virtual assistants. Episode 34 is a conversation with Retired Captain William Toti discussing some tips and advice for transitioning vets and recruiters/companies looking to hire veteran talent.

Embrace the suck? Find out more…. Are you in the #military looking to transition?

Are you a #veteran that is now looking or currently working?

Do you feel like you were given the right tools and advice to prepare you for a career in Corporate America?

Bill is a former Commanding Officer of the USS Indianapolis and had a very decorated career in the Navy.  After he left the military, he became the CEO of Sparton and has been on a mission to help veterans and business understand the value of hiring veteran talent. His book "From CO to CEO:  A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership" is out now!

Some takeaways from this episode:

  • Bill says the military does not prepare its veterans well for industry, in fact "much of what they tell the Veterans in their transition is wrong."
  • (13:09):  "Leadership is hard, but it's really hard when you're leading people who can actually quit."
  • (16:00):  His advice is to start thinking about what you want to do next because, "it may be too late to make some of the big adjustments you need to make in order to compete effectively."
  • Why getting extra degrees might not be necessary, depending on what you want to do - "...it could be better spent in industry in a job getting experience that is going to make you promotable."
  • Why employers should rethink the term, "Thank you for your service"
  • Why hire veteran talent? (21:18):  "...they're going to be wonderful employees with a great attitude,  a lot of motivation and people that can put up with a great deal of hardship.  In the military, we call it embracing the suck.  In the the civilian world it’s called your belly that's the great thing about it."

Bill is giving away digital copies of his book to 5 special listeners!  You have to stay tuned to the end to find out how to get yours!   Check out the "Blog" section and "Guest Info" section on www.jessgethired.com to learn more.

Episode 32:  Veteran Hiring with Ret. Lt. Col Kathy Lowery Gallowitz - Veterans face a number of challenges when re-entering the workforce after serving in the military, so making an effort to consciously employ veterans is a great way to thank them for their service. Businesses benefit greatly from hiring a veteran because of the knowledge and skills they acquired while serving in the military. Since hiring has been a popular issue since the pandemic, there appears to be a population of motivated workers who are not getting the attention they deserve, and that group includes our transitioning men and women of our armed forces. This episode features Retired Lt. Col Kathy Lowery Gallowitz, Author and Founder of Vanguard Veterans.  After serving nearly 30 years in the Air Force as a nurse and public affairs officer, she continues to equip civilian employers on how to source, recruit, and retain veteran talent through her business Vanguard Veteran. She is also the author of “Beyond ‘Thank You for your Service,’: The Veteran Champion Handbook for civilians.” Her life’s work has led her to be a champion for all service members transitioning into civilian life and has been a great resource to the veteran community.

Since the pandemic, the workforce has seen some highs and lows. The Great Resignation, The Great Reshuffle, The Great Restructure, and The Great Regret are all terms used to describe the workplace's three-year roller coaster ride. The last few years have been a whirlwind of emotions for employees and businesses, and we are seeing a large number of people emerge from the pandemic even more confused about the state of the economy. Episode 30, host Jessica Fiesta George discusses each of the stages of these pandemic-led phenomenons.

  • The "Great Resignation" was the unusually large number of employees who voluntarily left their jobs to pursue other opportunities. People were leaving jobs in search of better working conditions and remote work opportunities.
  • The "Great Reshuffle" took place when employees decided to move from job to job in search of the best combination of opportunity and pay. Companies were transferring employees from one job to another in the hopes of retaining them, and they were offering higher wages and better benefits in exchange.
  • The "Great Restructure" went hand in hand with the "Great Reshuffle" because organizations were forced to find ways to retain and attract employees. Employers were doing everything they could to stay ahead of their competition, throwing resources and money to ensure they were top of mind for many jobseekers, including increasing base pay, offering sign-on bonuses, accommodating hybrid work options, 4-day work weeks, and more.
  • The "Great Regret" both employees and businesses are discovering that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Employees were drawn to all of the perks only to discover that it wasn't all that it seemed, and they are desperate to return to their previous jobs. Employers spent a lot of money on things they thought would help them attract talent, but they didn't consider the financial impact of increasing pay/benefits, and they're now regretting it.

As a result, many businesses are facing financial difficulties and are laying off employees or slowing hiring. Learn more about Jess Get Hired: https://linktr.ee/jessgethired

I'm celebrating my birthday this month, and I'd love for you to join me as I reflect on how much the hiring world has changed. Throughout my career, I've witnessed how human resources has changed, evolved, and created new opportunities to focus on various aspects of the employee and candidate experience.

In this episode, I explore how much has changed in my career from the "personnel department," "staffing department," "recruitment department," and "talent acquisition department." All of these terms have one thing in common: they all aim to hire and fill a position. Otherwise, each role has some additional complexities, and I'll only scratch the surface of each of these roles in this episode.

Recruiting vs. Talent Acquisition. How different are they? I will talk about the shift from recruiting to talent acquisition and how to understand what makes each role unique.

Episode 25 of the Jess Get Hired Podcast is entitled,  Eggrolls and Eyerolls.  In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month #AAPI, I made it in time to share my lighthearted take on what it's like to be an Asian in Corporate America. To be more specific, Filipino. I briefly discuss why Asian women are precluded from leadership positions at America's Top Companies, as well as the boardroom's lack of diversity. I'll also share a few of my "eye-roll" moments. I share my stories and experiences, as well as address the most common misconceptions that most people have: "Where are you from?" "You aren't Asian enough...." "Asians never seem to age,......you look like you're 12." "Asians become doctors or nurses..."

"You know Karate, right?" ...and more....  This is a good-natured conversation that I hope entertains you while also shedding light on our differences and allowing us to laugh about it.. Jess Get Hired Podcast - Episode 24 - Opportunity Overhaul with Career Coach, Matthew Warzel Opportunity is out there.  What are you doing to go after it?   Join me in a conversation with Matt Warzel, a certified resume writing expert and career coach.  We talk about bouncing back after being laid off and the different struggles many job seekers are facing today.  He shares a few tips to stand out from the crowd so you can take advantage of the different opportunities ahead of you. Finding opportunities isn’t about submitting resumes you find on a job board and waiting for recruiters or companies to contact you. A part of finding your next opportunity is about putting in some work.  That includes:

Networking with a purpose – start with the people you already know and then get out of your comfort zone and find people in the industry or occupation you are looking to get into.  Join professional organizations. These are groups that can give you the inside track. Job Boards are not the end-all and be-all solution, but use it as a starting point.  Find recruiters to partner with who can help you. Get a career coach to help you take a strategic approach and keep you motivated for your next career opportunity! Find a Recruiter that will be your new bestie - They will advocate for you if they know who you are and your capabilities!

It takes a lot of time and patience and depending on the position you’re chasing, the experience you bring to the table, finding the right opportunity will take time, so you will need patience and resilience. About Matt: Matthew Warzel, CPRW is a certified resume writing expert with over 15 years in Human Resources and career advancement techniques.  He manages MJW Careers and provides assistance to companies in transition from downsizes to buyouts as well as individual job seekers needing to advance their careers. Matt has a long history of working in Human Resources and recruitment/staffing teams across a variety of industries.  He fashions a resume that allows employers to review the applicant's assets while highlighting his or her accomplishments, showcasing impacts on the employer's bottom lines using quantitative verbiage, and maintaining brevity. www.jobstickers.com

Have you all ever worked in an organization where the leaders didn’t match the culture? A place where you loved your job, but your manager totally sucked at doing the one job they were supposed to do, which was lead and manage a team?

Special Guest for this episode is Eric Harkins, a motivational speaker, a consultant, and author of the book, Great Leaders make sure Monday Morning Doesn’t Suck. We are going to have a blunt discussion with some adult language about leadership and the workplace.

If you don’t mind a few F-bombs and raw talk, then keep listening.

In this episode, you’ll get to hear Eric talk about how he helps organizations Get Talent, Keep Talent, and Grow Talent – which is the premise of his business GKG Search and Consulting. He spent 25 years in corporate America in leadership roles from manager to Chief HR Officer and Chief Administrative Officer before he decided to start his own consulting firm based in Minneapolis.

If your organization is suffering from negative culture, low employee engagement, high employee turnover, and unclear expectations, this will shed some insight on how Eric turns the concept of "LEAD" into actionable steps. Also, if you are a high performer that feels like what you do or where you work no longer aligns with your goals, this episode was created for you!

Eric's book, Great Leaders Make Sure Monday Morning Doesn't Suck, is published by Forbes Books. You can buy it on Amazon, Kindle, and online.

What is your career focus this year? To accomplish your goals, you have to be personally motivated and self-disciplined.  The app is a great way for you to stay on track.  Remember the reason behind setting your goals and think about your "Why."  Are you doing this for yourself?  Your Family?  Your Career?  Keep your eye on the prize!  Other ways to stay on track to your career goals:

Since the pandemic last year, employers have been focused on employee health and well-being. Millions of people were laid off, leaving them with financial and professional insecurity. Working from home has added to challenges, as parents have had to learn how to work and teach their kids at the same time. Several people are finding it hard to separate work and personal life, which is creating tension and, ultimately, workplace burnout.

Anne Genduso, a certified executive career coach, discusses her burnout story, how she overcame it, the signs to look for, and how to manage through the slump.

Job Burnout Symptoms can include:

  • A change in lifestyle
  • Lack of energy to be productive on a consistent basis
  • The feeling of disappointment with your accomplishments
  • Unhappiness with job and life
  • Substituting healthy habits and replacing them with alcohol, drugs, or eating more
  • Change in sleep habits

Causes for burnout:

  • Unclear job expectations
  • Lack of control
  • Culture of dysfunctional workplace dynamics
  • Highs and lows of activity - inconsistency
  • Lack of work/life balance

Risk Factors:

  • Workloads and working long hours
  • Profession of serving others - thinking of others before thinking of yourself
  • Little to no control over the work you do

Job burnout is not a mental illness, it is a mental health issue. Since COVID, this has become a bigger issue. There is a lack of employees to help with the workload, and many increasing their duties to cover for the gap is taking its toll.

Some ways to cope can include: spending time with people you care about, taking your PTO/Vacation, adding something new to your daily routine, blocking off time on your calendar and doing something for yourself, asking for help, and more.

Anne and I will discuss several ways to keep your mind open and consider options. Burnout has physical and mental implications. Time to recognize the signs.

The phone screen is the very first step of the interview process.  Are you the type that gets intimidated or unsure about what to expect?  In this episode of Jess Get Hired, we will talk about the steps to help you prepare if you get a call from a recruiter or hiring manager.  A phone screen gives the company a chance to get to know you quickly and for you to learn more about them.  It is a casual conversation that lasts about 15-30 minutes to see if you meet the qualifications, learn more about you and your personality, see if your experience lines up with the job description and if you would be a good fit for the company.  This is also a chance for you to ask questions to determine if this is even the right company for you!   Phone screens don't have to be intimidating if you prepare for it!  We will share a few strategies and tips to help you get through this important step to get closer to the job that you want. We will go over:

Why a phone screen is a necessary step to the hiring process. A recruiter's role in the phone screen How you should prepare? Changing your voicemail if you are in job search mode The Elevator Pitch - how to introduce yourself How to answer questions about job history  Sharing what you are looking for The dreaded compensation question Questions you should ask before hanging up the phone

Phone screens are casual conversations, so practice what to say in case you get that phone call!   An outline of the podcast and some practice samples will be posted at www.jessgethired.com   What are tips you have found that have helped you?  Share them with me at jessgethired@gmail.com or connect on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/fiestageorge (Jessica Fiesta George)

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network. Last year, I published Episode 3 titled "Your LinkedIn Profile Sucks," in which I discussed what makes a bad profile and offered advice on how to improve your online presence. Episode 12 expands on some of the previous tips by reminding listeners of some of the key components of your LinkedIn profile as well as new tips to help you build your brand.

Employers, recruiters, and other business professionals are looking to network, but they may be passing over your profile because it lacks attention-grabbing content that entices them to connect with you. I'll include quotes from polls I created based on various comments from my LinkedIn community. So, listen closely because your comment could be featured!

I will discuss:

  • LinkedIn profile photo - what photos capture attention?
  • LinkedIn Banner - Your billboard - how do you summarize who you are in a photo?
  • LinkedIn Headline - are you just generic?
  • LinkedIn Summary - what should you write here?
  • LinkedIn Experience - How far should you go back?

Most importantly, implementing some, if not all, of these suggestions, will assist you in making the most of this platform. You will begin to develop authentic connections to what I call "the greatest online networking party" by posting content, engaging in other people's posts, interacting with key leaders in your targeted industry, joining groups, and more. Between episode 3 and this recent episode, let me know your thoughts on the tips I shared.
