Playwright and author Octavio Solis received the Distinguished Achievement in the American Theater Award at the Inge Theater Festival in Independence, Kansas in May 2019. On Saturday, May 25, 2019, Octavio Solis and Liz Duffy Adams engaged in a conversation about his career at the Independence Public Library.

Donald Ray Hill became the first player in the history of Independence, KS Little League Baseball to hit an over-the-fence home run when he smashed a three-run blast on July 12, 1954, at Clark James Field. Don was honored in 2019, at the Independence Historical Museum and Arts Center, joining their Baseball Hall of Fame. This is an interview with Don and his wife Vernie.

Independence, Kansas author Marilyn Johnson, writing under the pen name Sue Snow has published her first children's book "Little Magpie and the Wild Pony Hunt.
She is currently working on "Little Magpie and Honey," book 2 of Little Magpie and Honey Adventures. This is the story of Little Magpie and her pony Honey. She discovers that her pony is highly intelligent, is a comedian and a jokester. She trains Honey first with verbal and then with hand commands much like we train dogs. Honey plays lots of tricks on the Magpie, Broken Tooth, the medicine man and the entire village during their sessions, all the while snickering in laughter at her clever tricks! Little Magpie then discovers that Honey is attuned to her Dream Walking so she trains her to hear nonverbal commands without hand signals.
The book centers on the two of them working together in two separate events. The first one wins the freedom of a young mother whose toddler was drowning. The warrior Black Snake of the Yellow Bear Eaters rescue the young boy and, as a prize for the rescue, claim the mother for his wife. Little Magpie and Honey trick him by getting him to agree to a wager that the warrior thinks he is sure to win. The second event is a rescue by Little Magpie and Honey of a little girl, Yellow Flower, of the People of the Deer who is kidnapped by the Badger People. After the rescue, the two are pursued through the Painted Mountains by the Badgers, as they try to steal back the child, and by Black Snake who wants revenge on Little Magpie and Honey. As they continue on their dangerous journey, Little Magpie tells Yellow Flower many stories of their People and how Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun shaped the mountains and the tall hoodoos they are traveling through.

Marilyn Johnson has been active in literary arts for several years. She is a member of the Kansas Authors Club and is the Publicity and Writers in the Community Chairs. She has also served as Secretary for District 3, southeast Kansas of the Kansas Authors Club and is presently the Membership Chair for District 3. Besides the book Little Magpie and the Wild Pony Hunt, she is working on a sequel to that book as well as an adult time travel book, "Dancing In Time" book one of her Time Keeper series. Marilyn and her husband Ace of 17 years owned and operated Glencliff Farm Bed Breakfast and Spa for five years. She ran the day spa and trained several massage therapists over the years, offering a full range of day spa packages. She and her husband sold the Bed and Breakfast in 2004 and Marilyn resumed a private massage practice in Independence until 2014 during which time she retired and has worked on her writing full time since then. In 2017 she organized the Independence Inksmith Writers group that meets every 4th Saturday of each month at 11:00 at Ane Maes Coffee and Sandwich shop in Independence. Each meeting features a program with guest speaker on one of the many areas of writing from fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, journalism, self-publishing and social media marketing just to name a few. The meetings are open to the public and there are neither dues nor formal membership.

Liz was born in Independence, graduated from high school at IHS and received a journalism degree from Kansas State. The first 10 years of her career were spent as a reporter, editor and photographer for newspapers in the cities of Arlington and Abilene, Texas, and Marysville, Kansas. Later she moved into non-profit communications and was the national communications director for the Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States (The Arc) in Arlington for 18 years. She was also the communications manager for the Fort Worth Transportation Authority and in 2003, moved to Washington, D.C. for a seven-year stint with the public affairs office of national Easter Seals.
In 2011, Liz published a book titled, "Making It Home, My Year as a Middle-Aged Runaway," about a career break, an adventurous year of travel and working wage-earning jobs in locales across the United States. Here book can be purchased at the following locations:

Another "homecoming" was her return to her hometown of Independence to settle in 2008. In the years since, she has been the site director at the Little House on the Prairie Museum and the executive director of Independence Main Street. Retiring in 2016, Liz remains an advocate for small-town ways of life. She is a busy volunteer, primarily for arts-and-culture causes. She likes cats, newspapers, coffee, movies, cooking and friendships.

Jack Brannum was born during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl and moved as a toddler to Russell, Kansas, home of Robert Dole. Jack graduated from Russell High School in 1951 and moved to Independence, Kansas, where he met June, his future wife. Jack joined the United States Army and is a Korean War Veteran. When Jack came back from Korea, he and June were married and they had 3 children. Jack has always tried to live his life by his father's rule: "always give them 110% to their 100%," giving them more than what is expected. Jack and June lived for a time in Pella, Iowa and this year they returned to Independence, Kansas.

Hazel Spire was born and raised in England and she came to the US after meeting her GI husband in Iran. Her first YA mystery, SECRET OF THE SEVENTH GATE (Royal Fireworks 2001), takes place amid the turmoil of Iran’s Islamic Revolution. Her second novel, ARROWHEAD’S LOST HOARD (P3 Press 2008), is about kids finding Roman treasure on a fictional British island.

The Independence Diversity Task Force was created by Leadership Independence to help promote diversity in the Independence, KS community. We begin this process with a Diversity Summit on April 4, 2009 bringing members from our community for many different walks of life to gather. This interview took place on September 21, 2016. Art Schenk was a former Montgomery County Sheriff for 20 years. Art and his wife LaVerne have been married for 70 years and are devoted to each other.
Project Q&A, (formally The Montgomery County LGBTQ and Allies Social group) sole purpose is to create a connection between area LGBTQ members and their allies. This group will work to create an LGBTQ visibility for an otherwise invisible community. Through gatherings on the first and third Thursdays, Project Q&A will meet at Uncle Jacks in Independence, KS to enjoy good food, great company, and create lasting friendships.

This interview took place July 8, 2014, at the Independence Public Library. Ralph J. "R. J." Osborn was born 10/26/1923, in Pawhuska, OK. He lived there until he was about 10 years of age. He graduated from Independence High School with the class of 1941 and attended junior college in Independence as well. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from June 1943 to February 1946. RJ passed away on July 10, 2020.

Robert L. Cooley was born in Independence, Kansas. He was interviewed as part of the Created Equal grant received by the Independence Public Library. He was in the first group of students who attended Lincoln Elementary School in Independence. He was an insurance investigator for a number of years and also worked for the post office.
John Frederick Vermillion, Jr, was born 4/1/1922, in Osawattomie, Kansas. He came to Independence, Kansas in a Model T Ford with his family when he was about 4 years old. Their first night in town they slept in the car at Riverside Park. John is the owner/editor of the Independence News newspaper.

Alfred James Baden was born September 8, 1924, at 600 S. 4th St., in Independence, Kansas. He was known as Bud to his friends and as Opa to his grandchildren. He served in the United States Army during World War II and he loved fly. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was employed by Sinclair Oil Corporation (later ARCO) for 33 years. Bud always had a smile and was ever curious about the history of Independence; the Baden family was a founding family. This interview took place on May 11, 2016. Bud passed away January 12, 2017.

Gary Edward Hunn was born May 6, 1944, in Wellington, New Zealand. Many years later he discovered that his birth father was an American Marine who had been killed in action on Tarawa atoll in the Pacific Ocean, November 20, 1943. His birth father was Jack Edward Miller of Independence, Kansas. Gary and his wife Nora came to Independence to discover his American roots in June 2016. This interview took place on June 12, 2016.
Dr. Fay Bradley was born January 13, 1938, at the home of his parents in Independence, Kansas. This interview took place January 27, 2015 as part of a grant called Created Equal that was given to the Independence Public Library. Dr. Bradley has run in marathons around the world. Dr. Bradley passed away January 14, 2021.

Bertha May LaSalle was born July 13, 1923, "on a clap of thunder" according to her mother. She was named after her maternal grandmother. Bertha is an active and vibrant member of the community.
Sydney H. Andrews was born March 30, 1926, in India, the son of medical missionaries. This interview took place March 31, 2014 in his home in Independence, Kansas. Sydney passed away March 20, 2015. He is survived by his beloved wife Wilma Andrews.

Judy Carroll grew up on a working farm in Kansas. After college, she worked in Wichita for Channel 8, KPTS and as a paralegal. After moving to Independence, Kansas, Carroll worked at a variety of part-time jobs before working as a paralegal for 28 years. She and her husband, Dan, are the parents of four children and have eight, soon to be nine, grandchildren.

J. L. Warnock, Author, Independence, Kansas
Born in 1949 near an Air Force base in New York State, J. L. Warnock served 4 years in Army Military Intelligence doing technical work with the highest security classifications. He married in 1970.
After leaving the service in 1972, he earned a Bachelors degree in education in New York. He and his wife Peggy came to Independence, Kansas in 1974. They each earned Master’s degrees in education in 1980.
He retired after nearly 30 years of teaching everything from third grade through post graduate level aerospace classes. He became a volunteer reader at a local bookstore and began to think about writing. He has produced short stories in several genres.
J.L. divides his time between senior aerobics classes, flying his homebuilt airplane, and hours spent at the computer keyboard, writing, always writing. He has so far produced three novels, one children’s book, one collection of short horror stories, one collection of short science fiction stories, and two “cleverly disguised” Memoirs.
Joe Warnock passed away November 1, 2020 and he is missed by many, including the staff of the Independence Public Library.
