At the time of the discussion - the Federal Government had rejected all calls for a Royal Commission into institutional abuse of people with disability. As we know an election took place and the government bowed to pressure from advocates everywhere . The Royal Commission is now under way and will run for three years until 2022. Live from Reinforce's No Strangers Here CD Launch in Dec 2015Reinforce decided that the best way to educate, create a new voice and introduce new listeners to the concepts of Self Advocacy was to produce these catchy songs.Reinforce is a Self Advocacy organisation for and by people with an Intellectual disability. It is run to ensure that the rights of people with an intellectual disability are upheld in the same way as everyone else in the community with respect, dignity and inclusion.
The 'Why Self Advocacy Matters' forum and Q&A, took place on Wednesday, 25 November 2015.Hosted by the Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU), Raising Our Voices and other Victorian self advocacy groups The forums focus was on the way self advocacy works to empower people, to change and strengthen disability support and mainstream systems and to build more inclusive communities and the many ways people can support self advocacy groups. It was an opportunity to hear about the link between self advocacy, the NDIS and the ILC policy framework, and talk with self advocates and self advocacy supporters about the different models of group self advocacy and the work they are undertaking to strengthen the voice of people with a disability.

Safety issues on urban streets and how people with a disabiltiy avoid the many hazards like people on mobile phones, getting on and off public transport. The team share personal stories and safe spaces.
The Family and Community Development Commmittee (Victorian Government) have been undertaking the review over the last year calling for submission into the inquiry into Abuse and Diginity in Disability Services. Pauline and Norrie talk about the history of abuse in instituations in Victoria and the culture of control over people with a disability, and how hard it is for people to speak up. AMIDA is an advocacy group formed by people who have a lived experience of living in these institutions.
