This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the pleasure of speaking with Emily Abraham who is an Occupational Therapist, Spinal Cord Injury Advocate, and the partner of Kyle McKittrick. Emily joined us on the show after the tragic passing of Kyle in December after checking himself into the hospital with an unknown issue causing extreme autonomic dysreflexia (AD) that eventually caused an inoperable brain bleed. Emily gave some great information and things for any person dealing with an SCI to watch out for if you're hospitalized, especially surrounding AD as many nurses and doctors are not familiar with this serious condition that can arise at a moments notice for any injury T6 or higher. Kyle was a major voice and inspiration in the spinal cord injury community after suffering a C6/7 SCI in 2018, he played wheelchair rugby with the Las Vegas Highrollers, and truly lived life to the fullest. We talked about Chris's injury as a senior in high school, the game they attended a year later were another student-athlete suffered a spinal cord injury and served as the catalyst for Gridiron Heroes, and the lack of support they receive from the NFL. We also discussed the CNN Heroes award they received, donating wheelchair accessible vehicles to some of these players and their families, and the unfortunate reality that the numbers of spinal cord injuries in high school football are not coming down. This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the opportunity to speak with Jeff Lefkowitz who is an author, inventor of the MAS neurological rehabilitation system, and the founder of Abilities Recovery Center (ARC). We spoke with Jeff about his early career as a chiropractor and working with professional athletes before a patient with a Spinal Cord Injury came into his practice and launched a new career in neurological rehabilitation. Jeff developed a breakthrough rehab device called the Mobility Activation System (MAS) that serves the purpose of multiple items in a standard rehab facility and cuts down on the time it takes to transfer to one of these other devices. Tyler is a Wheelchair Bodybuilder, Disability Advocate, Stem Cell Recipient, and a Spinal Cord Injury Survivor. I spoke with Tyler about taking part in the 2025 NPC Wheelchair Nationals Bodybuilding competition, how he's been feeling a year or so after receiving stem cells, his continuing goal of checking out wheelchair accommodations that NFL and NBA arenas, and his future plans and bodybuilding and in life. On this abbreviated version Live to Walk Again Podcast we talk about the tragic incident from Monday Night Football were Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle. We chatted about not knowing the extent of the injury at the time and how we were fearing that it may be a spinal cord injury, the people we know who have suffered SCI as the result of playing football, and the effect that has on their families. This week on the Live to Walk Again we dive into a couple of interesting Spinal Cord Injury research articles that caught our eye. The first one is based on a study out of the University of Wisconsin–Madison where researchers are mapping out the human hindbrain and using that to create specialized neuronal cells to mimic the cells at the level of a spinal cord injury. This study also could have long-lasting impacts on a wide range of neurological disabilities like MS, muscular dystrophy, and ALS. The second study is out of Texas A&M University and is a multidisciplinary research study between Texas A&M school of medicine and Texas A&M AgriLife using an HIV peptide that is accepted by most cells in the human body and attaching a protein concoction that will latch on to the peptide and cross into the cell's nucleus where it can be reprogrammed. This study could also have far-reaching effects on repairing correlation damaged joints or even administering cancer drugs to pinpointed areas of the body. This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we were lucky enough to speak with Annalisa and John Squires who are in interabled couple who are the owners and operators of Rolling in Paradise, an adaptive equipment business in Southwest Florida. John told us how he was injured at 15 years old, how he got heavily involved in adaptive sports from hand cycling to quad rugby, and how/when they started Rolling in Paradise. We also discussed the impact of being able to work with a 100% disabled owned business to buy adaptive equipment when most of the other companies that supply these tools are large corporations and the community their building with helping people find peer support after suffering SCI and grants to help pay for some of these adaptive devices. This week on the Live to Walk Again podcast Jerimie and Ricardo discuss two new research projects going on with huge implications for spinal cord injury recovery and an interesting sports related SCI fundraising campaign. The first study is based on an existing AstraZeneca drug that could potentially reduce swelling at the injury site after spinal cord injury but also block harmful enzymes that attack the injury area and even restore neural growth. The second study looks at an interesting new neural probe that is 1/5 the size of a strand of hair that has the capability of both electrical stimulation and recording neural messages and stimulating different parts of the brain and spinal cord in real time. This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing my Aunt and Ricardo's wife Gina Bagnariol–Benavides who was the Supported Employment Coordinator for Boeing in the mid-80s to early 90s as the Americans With Disabilities Act was going into effect. At the time Boeing was one of the first large corporations to implement disability hiring practices and Gina was on the front lines of the movement to help disabled people get back into the workforce. She spoke at many national conferences showing other large companies how Boeing could ADA policy into practice. We also spoke about her work getting legislation passed to make Washington one of the first states with distracted driving laws in the country. We also talked a little bit about her work speaking the high school students about the dangers of distracted driving and the real world consequences that can occur. Could taking mushrooms help restore function after a spinal cord injury? This week's guest on the Live to Walk Again Podcast, Devon Colbert, has been studying the subject for the last two years and connecting with doctors and research facilities across the country to set up a trial on the impacts of combining micro-dosing psilocybin in conjunction with an enzyme called Chondroitinase ABC that helps reverse the effects of scar tissue among other things. This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Fatma Inanici from the University of Washington who is conducting a transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation study to restore hand and arm function in cervical level spinal cord injuries. We spoke about the trials that have been completed and their success, the next set of trials getting ready to begin, and the role this technology could play in restoring some lower body functionality. This week we go through all of the studies we haven't been able to get to on the last few episodes, the first study is on using carbon nanotubes to control neural cell growth which could be instrumental in stem cell research. The next study we talk about centers on a new approach to epidural stimulation this sounds very promising. And finally we discussed a study coming out of China that is focusing on using a form of liquid to create a scaffolding that would dissipate once it was no longer needed and not have any ill effects on the body.
