Racking Focus Podcast
Films aren’t just meant to be viewed, but they’re intended to be discussed. If you’re anything like us, you love watching + talking about movies, but the problem is that sometimes there’s no one around you who gets your love for the cinema. So if you enjoy film analysis and a good conversation, then join us every other week as we discuss new or classic films. Our name comes from a filmmaking technique where the focus shifts over the course of the shot from one subject to another, known as racking focus. We chose this name because we shift our focus to different aspects of the film in review.
Josiah and John finally chat about MoonKnight, one of John's favorite Marvel Comics characters. The full series conversation is chock full of spoilers, so beware. This is a show to watch without the stain of foreknowledge.

Jordan Peele inspired Josiah and John to create this podcast, and so it is appropriate that his film, NOPE, is the subject of our 100th episode. Nope is a genre breaking critique of the modern (and ultimately) human infatuation with spectacle. The film channels Jaws, the great westerns of the 1950s and 60s, a host of paranoid, alien invasion films, and Spielberg's cinematic style. All of that is supported by beautiful visual imagery, stellar acting, deep cinema history references, and a well crafted plot. Josiah and John have been waiting since seeing US to review and discuss Peele's work on the podcast and they don't skip a beat. The conversation is their reaction and unrehearsed analysis and, like the film, does not kick into high gear until midway through the conversation. It is all great fun, but the meat comes after some verbal antipasto. Check out the timestamps below to see where you want to join into the dialogue.

Back after a hiatus filled with births and death, Josiah and John journey to the realms of the gods to explore Taika Waititi's second Thor film. This one has met with some controversy, but love it or butcher it, Love and Thunder opens a path in the Bifrost for much more MCU magic. Richly Waititiesque, Love and Thunder is both tonally inconsistent and emotionally satisfying.

And we're back after a few weeks off due and we're discussing and reviewing the newest addition to the MCU, Dr. Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. Raimi fans will love it. Non-Raimi fans might have problems with it. We fall into both categories and appreciate the filmmaking aspect, but also think that some of Raimi's specific style really causes... you know what? The Northman is a downright brutal film. And we talk about all of it. Our review and conversation about The Northman covers everyting from the intensity of the music, to the unbelievable shots, and the entire epic-ness of it all, and so much more. We actually had to stop ourselves because we could've talked for another hour together about this film. Eggers certainly delivered on a $90 Million Viking epic. If you're someone who says that original movies aren't being made, well you couldn't be more wrong. Everything Everywhere All At Once is a prime example of a wildly original idea that is both absurd and full of emotion and heart. This is hands down one of the best films of 2022 and it's only April! There are spoilers everywhere in this episode and we highly encourage you to watch this film without any expectations so that you can experience the magic that is Everything Everywhere All At Once without any pre-conceived ideas. So that means skip this episode, watch the film, and come back and listen to us talk about the movie.

Another year, another Batman reboot. HOWEVER, this one is different. Pattinson wears the cowl this time and his Batman is striking, and his Gotham is more grounded in the real world. Is it better than Nolan's The Dark Knight? Well, we discuss that, of course, along with with everything from Greig Fraser's astounding cinematography to Michael Giacchino's brilliant scoring, to all of the little things like Batman gadgets, Kravitz's Catwoman, and so much more. John + Josiah are back in the theaters after nearly two years to watch a Marvel film. It's been a longtime coming and in the meantime there has been some great television and limited series arrive from Marvel on Disney Plus, but they are very excited to be back and watching Black Widow on the big screen. They discuss everything from the pacing, to the plot, to what they found as disjointed with regards to what might be editing and directing. Essentially, they take a big ol' dump on the film for about an hour and then tell you that you should definitely go watch the film because it's worth seeing... not sure how any of this makes sense, but it's just what they do. Trickery, a long Asgardian folk song, some personal revelations and no significant explanation of the physics of time litter this stand alone buddy film on a Kree moon. Marvel is giving us one of the best conversations about race and America wrapped up in a slam bang action adventure that has ever graced our screens. The mixture of actions sequence and rich dialogue makes "TRUTH" the best episode from the marvel streaming catalogue. Part Lord of the Rings, part Avengers, part generic brand commercial, the musically enigmatic splash page of a move, Justice League The Snyder Cut blasted onto HBO almost derailing the streaming service. John and Josiah watched the 4 plus hour film and shared their insight into the massive film in a mighty contained aspect ration. John is joined by Philadelphia playwright, actor and theatre producer Richard Bradford, author and star of To My Unborn Child: a Love Letter from Fred Hampton, a one man play about the life and philosophy of Fred Hampton. Rich and John discuss Judas and the Black Messiah and place it in the context of historic Hampton and the Black Panthers. They discuss the importance of Hampton's message, how that manifests in the film and their thoughts on the successes and struggles of the storytelling in the movie. Both agree, you should watch this film.
Rich Bradford is Artistic Director of Curio Theatre in Philadelphia, Assistant Artistic director of Iron Age Theatre and a member of Theatre in the X. He is a fixture at Passage Theatre in Trenton New Jersey and an amazing gardener. Rich won best actor at the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival for his portrayal of Hampton and has traveled the region presenting the 80 minute story of Fred Hampton in which he plays Hampton, Deb, and more.

Unfortunately, the banquet is served on a platform that descends through a prison where each floor eats from what has been left by the floor above.
As the table descends, the quality and the quantity of food degenerates as much as the behavior of the pairs of prisoners on each level.
Both of our critics loved the film and this spoiler-filled conversation considers the tools used by the film's production team to craft this intense, violent fable of class and human dignity. This is episodes is full of insight and admiration for the film and we are sure we will revisit this one after more reflection. "The Platform" is available on NETFLIX.

This week John and Josiah locked themselves into a chat room and remotely recorded the podcast because of the PA Shelter in Place requirement. This funny, haunting, metaphorical, exciting, moody, masterwork of Korean cinema is worth the look. This week John and Josiah had some real scheduling problems, especially when the movie theatre seriously abbreviated the showings of The Goldfinch. We only had time to do our "Hot Take" segment in the car, but we still had volumes to share about this high society novel adaptation. Listen to the reasons why we DISAGREE with the critical rating for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes. We loved this masterwork of technique and although it is long, it tells a rich and rewarding, tension-filled, story exploding of beautiful imagery composed of with masterful design elements.

This week Josiah and John are taking a trip to Derry to confront IT CHAPTER TWO. This adaptation of the lengthy Stephen King novel is eaqually lengthy, running 2 hours and 50 minutes. As a sequel to IT Chapter One, It is serviceable, but "it" does not reach the same horror heights. Full of quality jump scares and some excellent acting, pacing is the challenge for the filmmakers. We are joined by Alec in the car, and haunted by a security guard, as we give our immediate take on the film and then we take some time to put the film in context in "chapter two" of our podcast with just Josiah and John.

This week John and Josiah brave the perils of wifi and video streaming to watch the 2018 film SHOPLIFTERS by respected Japanese director, Hirokazu Koreeda. We loved this movie but found it challenging to watch, both because of technical issues and the deep dive into common day Japanese culture. There is much to talk about this one, available on HULU as we publish. It received the Palme D'or at Cannes and was nominated for an Academy Award. It raises the question of what is a family and how does one proceed ethically when living in an economically difficult position. This is a puzzle box of love, relationship and theft.

Although neither John nor Josiah are die hard Springsteen fans, they are both fans of Gurinder Chadha's love letter to the lyrics of the Boss (event though they can be difficult to parse) and this charming film about England in the 1980s. The movie deals with racism, fascism, love and family with some beautiful camera work and some well designed musical set pieces. There is much to discuss.
