Hi there! Welcome to Episode 247 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka’s crisis-ridden cricket board earlier this month, saying it had failed to ensure there was no government interference in its affairs. Babar top-scored with a fine half-century, his first in ODIs against India, but needed to captain spectacularly and hope for brilliance from his bowlers to deny India in their chase of such a relatively low target. And Rohit’s sublime knock at the top of the order made India’s reply extremely comfortable, with Shreyas Iyer bringing up his own half-century with the winning runs. Hi there! Welcome to Episode 188 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. As the Australian women’s cricket team celebrated yet another global title, their Indian counterparts would be facing a nagging “what if”. They were in control of their semifinal against the Aussies, and with the South Africans reaching the final at England’s expense, the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup would feel like one that got away from them. Hi there! Welcome to Episode 186 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. All-rounders galore would be an apt summary of MI's squad. The nucleus of this team, like many others, would be the experienced internationals who are all match-winners in their own right which means Mumbai have an enviable middle order. The likes of Amelia Kerr, Chloe Tryon and Hayley Matthews add to the experience in their ranks. And, as has been the case in the men's competition, Mumbai has invested a good amount on the 'unknowns' as well - all proven performers in the domestic circuit though. Amanjot Kaur, Dhara Gujjar, Saika Ishaque and U19 World Cup-winning star Sonam Yadav stand to gain immensely in this dressing room led by the effervescent Harmanpreet Kaur. Hi there! Welcome to Episode 183 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Gujarat Giants were the first ones to recruit a star-studded backroom staff and with Rachael Haynes, Mithali Raj and Nooshin Al Khadeer leading the charge, Gujarat have built a solid squad that boasts of heavy influence from the two traditional giants - Australia for the international flavour, and Railways for the desi tadka. Their pool of 18 has four representatives from each, which gives them batting depth right until No.9 on paper. What stands out, though, is the lack of established Indian names in their core or an experienced leader. On the podcast today to join us for the discussion on the same, we have Ajinkya Bhosale. Hi there! Welcome to Episode 180 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. India beat Australia in the second Test in Delhi and in the process retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Hi there! Welcome to Episode 178 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. “It is often said that Test Cricket is the closest thing to life. Life is generally good when you have a lot of people around you. Similarly, a Test match looks good when the stadiums are close to capacity. Of the big 3 in Cricket, England and Australia have a healthy Test cricket-watching culture but the biggest of them all, India struggles to fill stadiums for test matches. Is it because people do not enjoy it here? Nah…in a country of billion people, there will always be 50,000 people in any city willing to watch the game from the stands. Is it because our facilities struggle to attract the fan for a whole day? Absolutely yes.” This is an excerpt from our guest’s riveting yet impactful article as he chronicles his journeys through the different stadiums he’s been to and the experiences he has had. In the wake of Dharamshala being dismissed as a test venue in the ongoing test series against Australia and the last-minute shift to Indore, we see the uproar and discontent among fans and other stakeholders. This episode will help put everything in perspective! On the podcast today, we have Dhruv Bhatia. Dhruv is an entrepreneur who runs his own tissue paper business from Delhi. He is a passionate student of the game and truly believes that test cricket is the closest thing to life. He's been following the game avidly and closely for about 25 years now. As a hobby, he started making short analysis videos on Instagram on the game of cricket. And now he has written an article about a subject very close to his heart. Which is fan experience in stadiums across India. Let’s talk more about it and understand where is he coming from! Hi there! Welcome to Episode 156 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Ireland defeated England again in a World Cup and won by five runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain fell in the 15th over of England’s innings. Rain and a wobbly start from England have handed Ireland a famous T20 World Cup triumph at the MCG. This makes Friday’s match against Australia, also in Melbourne and with a similar weather forecast, thus becomes a virtual eliminator, with neither side able to afford defeat. England’s air of invincibility was washed away on a damp and dramatic afternoon in Melbourne. A combination of Ireland’s excellence and an ill-timed downpour turned one of the tournament favourites from Twenty20 benchmarks to no marks. Welcome to Episode 151 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Jhulan Goswami is an unbelievable beast. In a career spanning 20 years and 261 days, the second-longest of any woman to have played international cricket she scalped 355 wickets in 284 matches across the three formats. The only woman cricketer with 200-plus wickets in ODIs, she took 255 in the format, 64 more than the second-best on the chart. When Jhulan Goswami started playing the game, women’s cricket in India was sleepwalking at night, mired in indifference. Two decades down the line, when India and England's cricketers lined up to form a guard of honour in her final game at Lord’s, the picture looked rosy. Welcome to Episode 124 (Part B) of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. India’s tour of England has finally ended, and the visitors should be given credit for coming out unscathed. India had a 2-1 lead over England in the Test series last year before the fifth encounter was postponed to 2022 because of coronavirus. India lost the deciding Test as the series ended 2-2. But the side came to terms in the white-ball series comprising three T20Is and three ODIs. India sealed both the white-ball series by a 2-1 margin, showing enough character and steel. Welcome to Episode 124 (Part A) of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. India squandered the opportunity to pull off a historic Test series win in England as the hosts won the rescheduled encounter in spectacular fashion by seven wickets to pull level at 2-2. Destructive centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root helped England retain the Pataudi Trophy. India fell short at the final hurdle once again, short on the heels of a disappointing series loss in South Africa. We will be reflecting on the major talking points from this test. Welcome to Episode 123 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Joining us on the podcast today is Vijay Lokapally. Sir is an Indian sports journalist and author. He started his career with the Patriot newspaper in 1981 and later joined The Hindu Group in 1986. Sir has been considered in the media as one of India's most respected writers on cricket and according to Sportskeeda, he is regarded as one of the most well-known sports journalists in India. This episode is all about delineating Virat Kohli and his form. His lean trot is now well into its third year which is extraordinary and has no parallel in the history of the game for a batter of such proven class and high achievement. Kohli is undoubtedly India's modern-day run machine with 23,693 international runs across formats at a 53.72 career average is the only batter with a 50-plus career average among the top run-getters in the world. For a long time, he averaged over 50 across all three formats, a feat which spoke volumes about just how prolific the former India skipper has been over the years. Even now, Virat averages above 50 in ODIs and T20Is. But since great players are judged more harshly when they go through dry spells thanks to how high they set the bar themselves, Virat has found himself in the eye of a storm of criticism. The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Overcast and a lot of other platforms and spread the word. Welcome to Episode 120 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. On the podcast today joining me is Nikhil Samant. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession, running his business in Pune. Like all Indians, he is a huge fan of the game of cricket. His passion and need to be associated with the game culminated in his writing of the book, ‘It Wasn’t A Waste of Time - The Story of the Most Important Decade' in Indian Cricket’. This book is his tribute to Indian Cricket and all the players who have had the privilege to wear the Indian cap. The book encapsulates four great men - Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Anil Kumble - led by the enigmatic Sourav Ganguly, accept the challenge to repair the tarnished image of Indian cricket. Will India's new captain bring back the charm and respect to India's first love? Who will take up Ganguly's mantle?” Basically, it is the story of an emotional journey Indian fans underwent in the first decade of the new millennium. It outlines the most important events, matches and series India participated in, and their impact on Indian cricket itself. The book beautifully outlines the important events that India had participated in at that time to regain its charm back. It has glimpses of ICC Champions Trophy 2000, India's tour of England and New Zealand in 2002, ICC World Cup 2003, ICC World Cup 2007 and others, presented as a 'long story short'. Although this book is non-fiction, relying heavily on true facts and statistics, interviews and reports, it still has an element of storytelling and a beautiful coherence that fascinated me. The book is surely recommended to all Cricket lovers and those who love to read about the sport. The author is articulate and the language used is subtle, well-drafted and rich. It depicts how the legends of Indian Cricket opened all the doors of love that were almost shut upon them. The comprehensive interview is a candid and free flowing discussion with Nikhil that has us covering a plethora of topics and you wouldn't want to miss out on this one! The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Overcast and a lot of other platforms and spread the word. Welcome to Episode 119 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. When Mithali Raj announced her retirement, it not only drew curtains on one of the most decorated careers in Indian cricket but also signalled the end of an era. In a career that spanned 23 years, she represented India a record 333 times across all formats, scored a world record 10,868 runs and became the first Indian captain to lead the country to two World Cup finals. But the legacy she leaves behind goes well beyond mere numbers and is almost impossible to soak in. She will always be remembered as the first woman to make it big in a predominantly male dominated sport and what is special is how she helped girls across the country nurture a dream and put their best foot ahead to achieve it seeing her. Welcome to Episode 101 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Joining us on the podcast is N Jagannath Das. Born in a family of journalists, Sir was inspired by his father late NR Swami, who was correspondent of The Statesman, The Hindu and PTI from 30s to late 70s. Sir started his career in Newstime in 1984 in Hyderabad before he joined Indian Express in 1986 and was in this paper till 2016. His last paper was Telangana Today where he worked as Deputy Editor heading sports desk. During his long career, he covered Test matches and the 2011 World Cup. He was part of the New Indian Express team that covered the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Apart from that be gave a lot of importance to local matches. For him, the biggest satisfaction was to write on Sania Mirza, VVS Laxman, PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal when they were very young. They went on become super stars of Indian sports. Welcome to Episode 100 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Joining us on the podcast is WV Raman. Standing unusually tall at the crease, with a left-hander's penchant for off-side play, WV Raman was a batter who should have ended with more generous returns than 11 Tests and 27 ODIs. He began as a left-arm spinner whose strength was his ability to out-think batters rather than impart outrageous spin or deliver an indecipherable arm-ball; he picked up a wicket in his first over in Test cricket, albeit that of Courtney Walsh. But Raman proved to be a batter of considerable skill. He hit a purple patch in 1988-89, scoring 313 for Tamil Nadu against Goa, and for good measure notched up two more double-centuries, ending the season with 1018 runs, surpassing a 44-year-old record for most runs in a season. As with many other batters of his time WV Raman Sir was forced to open the innings in order to play for India, and did so with some success. His second-innings 83 on Test debut, batting at No. 3, was overshadowed by Narendra Hirwani's feat of picking up the best bowling figures of 16-136 on debut. Sir's international career never really got going, and when Vinod Kambli was favoured over him during England's tour of India in 1993 the writing was on the wall. Kambli cashed in, and Raman's career remained a question of what might have been. The record will show, however, that he scored 96, his highest Test score - against New Zealand at home in 1990, went to Sri Lanka in 1993 and did not take part in a single first-class game, and became the first Indian to score a hundred against the South Africans, in an ODI at Centurion Park in the Friendship Tour of 1992-93. Raman Sir continues to be one of the shrewdest thinkers of the game now and dons many roles. This introduction describing Sir was written beautifully by Anand Vasu Sir on ESPN Cricinfo, but there is so much more to the man. Hopefully, this episode provides you, listeners, with a glimpse of the man who indeed is a legend. Without further ado, let's hop on to understand more about his journey with Cricket. It was an amazing conversation where a lot of things about his career, playing days, his coaching career and everything cricket was discussed, so don't miss out. Welcome to Episode 75 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. On the podcast today joining me is Arjun Hemmady. He is a Mumbai based full-time finance professional with a deep love of writing and all things cricket. Arjun loves reading, watching cricket, creating and spreading memes and also does a bit of writing along the way. So let's hop on to understand more about him and his book, 'Captain Khadoos. His latest book, 'Captain Khadoos' is a cricket-based fiction novel with a background in mental health and is a fiction book set in 2025. It revolves around the journey of its protagonist Suraj Bhatkal, a cricketer aiming to make a comeback to the Indian team. The book encapsulates the protagonist’s journey of becoming a cricketer, the trials and tribulations of being a cricketer and the associated glitz, glamour, the ups and downs too and everything that comes with cricket in India. What really works for the book and something that kept me hooked on was the narrative style, the characterization of the leads, the cricketing analogies, the simple yet very engaging storyline and the writing technique employed by Arjun, the discussion on mental health, it being set in the future and a lot more aspects that really sets this book apart. The name “Captain Khadoos " has its own narrative and significance and to get to know that, it is essential to pick this book and give it a go. The comprehensive interview is a candid discussion with Arjun that has us covering a plethora of topics and you wouldn't want to miss out on this one! Never on the Backfoot is out with a very special review and analysis episode for the ODI Series featuring India and England that has super fans Srijan and Neha in what has been one of the best collaboarations of this podcast. It's a 2 part series that's outstanding. We started with a set of questions to acquaint the listeners about him and his love for the game. Additionally, I've focused on Mandhana's captaincy and her breezy form with the bat, SA and a detailed analysis of all the positives and the good that's come by for them, the need for a proper Women's IPL, the Twitter storm at the same and reactions after the series loss, areas to work on and the road ahead in this exceptional episode. Never on the Backfoot is out with Episode 32. This episode is a review of the ODI series featuring the Indian women’s team vs the very dominant South African women's team who triumphed us 4-1 in this series. Apart from one nine-wicket win while chasing, India batted first, we were bowled out for under 200 twice and in the other two games, we couldn’t defend totals of 248 and 266. With the Women's ODI World Cup just a year away, the performance reflected a sorry state of affairs. The lack of match practice, the lessons from this series would further help the team grow and this episode has a detailed analysis of the same. Never on the Backfoot is out with Episode 31. This episode is all about the 4th test between India and England. After England won the toss and elected to bat first, the visitors were expected to make a good start and capitalise as much as they could eventually making it difficult for India to qualify ahead considering they were already out of the reckoning for the World Test Championship but fate had other plans. I've covered an array of pointers from the match ranging from England’s 1st innings batting, their inability to counter spin, India's superior bowling led by the spin department who have been phenomenal, India's solid 1st innings, crucial cameos and partnerships among a host of other topics and a special shoutout to 'Test Cricket' that makes this episode very enriching. India fittingly made it to the World Test Championship final and that's definitely going to be a cracker of a match versus New Zealand and what a fantastic test season we got to witness. Do check out @neveronthebackfoot for some awesome stuff and stay tuned to the podcast for more episodes.
Never on the Backfoot is out with Episode 30. This episode is all about the 3rd test between India and England. India registered only its second Test victory inside two days, overhauling a target of 49 against England in the day-night third game to take an unassailable 2-1 lead. In a Test match that turned out to be the shortest since World War II, this India and England encounter witnessed a very embarrassing batting collapse as the spinners made merry and that was literally the story of the test match. I've also focussed on the newly refurbished Motera Stadium, England’s 1st innings collapse, the buzz about the pitch, India’s 1st innings, England’s dismal batting, India merry chase in the 2nd innings. Additionally, I've deliberated on reactions post the match, England’s questionable selection and decoding Indian spinners in this brilliantly curated analysis episode of the Indian team's legendary, sweet victory. Do check out @neveronthebackfoot for some awesome stuff and stay tuned to the podcast for more episodes.
Never on the Backfoot is out with Episode 29. This episode is all about the recently concluded mini IPL auction. The eight IPL franchises participated in yet another auction a few months after the end of IPL 2020 with a big season looming ahead of another mega auction. This mini-auction had fewer slots to fill, but some interesting players up for grabs after retentions, trades, transfers and releases in the auction. I've also focussed on some costly buys, franchise wise analysis and a lot more in this episode. Tune in to this episode now streaming on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Anchor, Overcast and other platforms. Do check out @neveronthebackfoot for some awesome stuff and stay tuned to the podcast for more episodes.
Never on the Backfoot is out with Episode 28. This episode is all about the 2nd test between India and England. With their big 317-run win in the second Test at the Chepauk, India have levelled the four-Test series at 1-1. The victory was crucial for India in the context of the World Test Championship as they need to win the series at least with a 2-1 margin or better to make the cut for the title clash against New Zealand. I've focussed on Rohit Sharma's brilliance with the bat, India’s 1st innings, England’s 1st innings, India’s 2nd innings, England’s 2nd innings, Indian spinners and their prowess. Additionally, I've deliberated on the very impressive Ben Foakes and other misses for England in this test, underutilization of Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes, concluding it with a preview of the 3rd test and a look through of England’s Rotation policy. Tune in to this episode now streaming on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Anchor, Overcast and other platforms. Never on the Backfoot is back with Episode 27. This episode is all about the 1st test between India and England. Although we were on the losing end, it was still a very exciting match that we got to see and some key pointers that we can discuss. After the heady high of Brisbane beating Australia, India was back home to face off against a quality English side. A win will guarantee a place in the finals of the World Test Championship. This episode features Neha discussing the anticipation surrounding the squad, Will Puckovski’s injury, Labuchagne’s brilliant 100, Natarajan’s performance, Australia’s batting firing, the Indian bowling, Indian batting in their 1st innings and the Aussie attack’s consistency. Never on the Backfoot is proud to collaborate with Sahen Gupta, a Sport & Performance Psychologist and Founder of Discovery Sport & Performance Labs. Part 1 is all about the mental aspect of players during the pandemic. It witnesses us largely talking about his early roots, his inclination to Sports Psychology, his newest venture Discovery Sports Lab, his understanding of the Psychology of Cricket, mental resistance, famous quotes by Aussies on the ‘strength of the mind’, the mindset of players in high-pressure matches, the role of superstitions and jersey numbers, the role of a sports psychologist on tours and the burnout factor in bio bubbles.
These are some very interesting topics considering how we always focus on the external part of sport but never really pay attention to what is happening behind the scenes and even between the ears (the mind basically) and the mental aspect of sportspersons. The mental side of cricket is what distinguishes the best players from the others. The episode is now streaming on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Overcast and a lot of other platforms. This episode is all about India's exceptional win vs Australia in the 2nd Boxing Day test match. This was certainly a special win considering how we were handed a humiliating loss in the 1st test getting bundled out for 36. This episode features Neha discussing India’s record on Boxing Day test matches, a snippet on the history of Boxing Day, Prithvi Shaw getting axed, Mayank Agarwal’s disastrous form, Rahane’s captaincy and the unfair jibes at Kohli’s captaincy, Rishabh Pant’s inclusion, the session wise importance and India capitalizing on it.
