In this episode of NES Chat, weâre talking about female leadership in the energy industry.
According to Fortune, 23 women are now running global 500 businesses, an increase from just 14 in 2020. Despite a record number of women now running Global 500 businesses, women still make up a tiny minority overall.
And even though many experts agree that âsupporting a greater percentage of women to step up into leadership will have tremendous cultural and economic benefitsâ, leadership at todayâs top companies is still overwhelmingly male.
So, what can we do to ânarrow the gapâ and provide more opportunities for diversity in leadership?
To discuss this in more detail, we spoke with Shalena Shaheed, who was recently promoted to become NES Fircroft's first female Managing Director.
Shalenaâs journey began in 2006 when she joined NES in Australia. Since then, Shalena has been on a remarkable journey - relocating to 4 different countries with NES and receiving many promotions along the way.
We asked:
What brought you into recruitment and subsequently the energy industry?
When you began your career back in 2006, what did you imagine for your future?
How did you find relocating to 4 different countries with NES?
What motivated you to strive for a leadership position?
Whatâs been your biggest challenge or obstacle?
What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?
Have you ever felt âuncertainâ in your career and how did you navigate your way through it? (A deep dive into the term 'Imposter Syndrome').
Is the term âImposter Syndromeâ in itself a barrier for women in leadership?
How can we better support women? How can we create a culture that helps employeesâ channel healthy self-doubt into positive motivation?
Who inspired you to be a leader and how important is it to have a mentor to grow as a leader?
How do you balance your career, personal life, and passions? Is there such a thing as balance?
What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self just starting in her career?
How do you think can we encourage women to work in the energy industry?

Year on year, Asia is setting ambitious targets for growth within the wind power market. Because of this, there is a high demand for engineers with a range of technical skills. But, the sector is still young and the engineers with the required skill sets donât necessarily have a background in wind meaning companies are having to look outside for the skills they need.

CV Formatting is often overlooked but itâs a key part of ensuring your CV makes it through the recruitment process and is noticed by the hiring manager or recruiter.
This is especially important as more and more companies make use of applicant tracking systems (ATS). An ATS is a software application that allows companies to handle their recruitment electronically. The ATS can store, filter and shortlist candidate data based on given criteria such as skills, experience or education. In many cases, once you apply for a role your CV goes straight into an ATS and might not even be seen by a person!
Although the actual number of companies who use this software to handle their hiring needs isnât known, itâs estimated that almost 60% of all companies and a nearly 100% of the Fortune 500 companies make use of an Applicant Tracking System. This means that if youâre actively applying for roles, itâs very likely your CV has been through one or multiple applicant tracking systems.
So how can you ensure your CV stands out?
In this episode of NES Chat, Kevin McGrath from our IT team debunks some applicant tracking system myths and our very own Lauren Edwards, whose background is graphic design, explains how you can use formatting to convey creativity whilst still ensuring your data stands out in an ATS. We also provide you with some quick tips to ensure your CV looks the best it can be and remains professional. We talked about:
⢠How have resumes changed over the years? ⢠Where is the line between a creative CV and professionalism? ⢠How much personality should a candidate show in their CV? ⢠How do applicant tracking systems work and how does this impact creativity? ⢠What common misconceptions do candidates often have about applicant tracking systems? ⢠How can candidates include creativity in their CV but also ensure their data is correctly pulled through by the ATS? ⢠And more
They also shared personal experiences and practical tips for success.

Living abroad is the dream for many, but the reality doesnât always live up to expectations. Adjusting to a new host countryâs culture can be a challenge in any circumstance but this can be worsened during the festive period when the assigneeâs traditions donât marry up with those of the host countryâs. Many assignees suffer this time of year from homesickness which could contribute to the failure of their assignment.
So how can global mobility managers prepare their assignees culturally to ensure a successful assignment?
In this festive episode of NES Chat, weâre joined by Donna-Marie Joergensen from C3 Consulting. Donna is responsible for cultural training and has lived as an expat in Denmark, Sweden, China and Japan.
We talked about: ⢠What itâs like to celebrate Christmas in a different culture ⢠What to do if you misunderstand traditions in the host country ⢠How celebrating abroad can impact your family ⢠What to do if youâre a single expatriate celebrating abroad ⢠Advice for how expatriates can integrate into their host countryâs community ⢠Advice for Global Mobility managers and how they can support their assignees.

Interviews are a necessary part of the recruitment process but candidates often struggle to prepare adequately for them. Like most things in life, if you donât prepare well youâre less likely to succeed and achieve that all important job offer. 33% of bosses claim they know if they will hire someone within the first 90 seconds of an interview â so making a good first impression is the difference between receiving a job offer or not.
But in such competitive times, whatâs the best way to prepare for an interview to ensure you make a good impression?
In this episode of NES Chat, weâre joined by Zach Blaylock one of our senior recruiters based in California and Vicki Codd whoâs a member of our Board.
Both Zack and Vicki have been conducting interviews for years so are perfectly placed to provide interview tips. We talked about: ⢠What should candidates research? ⢠Where can they look for information? ⢠How can a candidate prepare for basic & competency based questions? ⢠How should a candidate evidence their experience? ⢠What is most impressive about a candidate ⢠Should candidates bring notes to their interview? ⢠What questions should a candidate ask an interviewer? ⢠And more
